Sugar Ray's Mark McGrath On The Sound Of 1999 And One-Hit Wonders

[mtvn_player id="1728927" vid="1060148" autoplay="true"]

Do you hate it when the artist or group you've paid money to see in concert decides to perform new songs nobody knows the words to? Me too! And so does Mark McGrath .

As the creator of the Under the Sun tour , the Sugar Ray frontman understands the power that his songs can have, even ones that were popular when Carson Daly was dating Jennifer Love Hewitt . For the second summer in a row, McGrath has recruited a slew of his '90s comrades ( Blues Traveler , Smash Mouth , Uncle Kracker ) whose rabid fan bases are still willing to pay to hear the hits. Despite branching out into acting with a role in the upcoming  Sharknado 2: The Second One , McGrath is always willing to play "Fly" — especially if the stage is located near a Denny's.

The musician, actor and host dropped by VH1 to chat about all things nostalgic, including his band's classic album, 14:59 . After breakout hit "Fly" took Sugar Ray from touring with new-metal groups like Korn  to the  TRL studio in Times Square, Mark McGrath was eager to address the public's assumption that they'd be one-hit wonders. "My whole thing was, if we only have one hit, I'm going to make fun of us, too," McGrath said of the cheeky album title. "[Critics will] understand we're in on it, and maybe they'll listen without prejudice." The 1999 release would go on to produce hits like "Every Morning," "Someday" and "Falls Apart," allowing the band to hang around for much longer than the requisite 15 minutes. Jokes on you, I guess? Check out the video above to find out whether or not McGrath will ever write a new song again, and hear his defense of the dreaded term "one-hit wonder."

Formed in 1986 Sugar Ray started off as a funk-metal band, but later came into fame once they shifted their sound in a more fun and airy direction. The group’s realization of the success they achieved with the 1997 single “Fly” prompted their stylistic change.

The members of Sugar Ray grew up in Orange County, California, US, but initially pursued differing musical paths. Rodney Sheppard the band’s principal guitarist had played in several reggae band’s and had even collaborated with Dean Butterworth (the drummer of Good Charlotte). Later on Sheppard formed the band the Tories with future Sugar Ray drummer Stan Frazier. With the addition of bassist Murphy Karges and vocalist Mark McGrath, the group changed its name to Shrinky Dinx, but eventually settled on the name Sugar Ray.

Though the origins of the band date back to the mid 80s the group’s debut album “Lemonade and Brownies” did not come out until 1995. The album did not produce a hit single; however, it did grab the attention of several critics and acted as a platform on which the band showcased their unique blend of hip-hop, funk, and metal.

The group struck gold with their next album “Floored”. This release featured songs written in a similar vein of their previous material; however, their single “Fly” went in an entirely different direction and went on to be the band’s most successful song to date. The song reached No.1 on the Billboard’s Airplay List and pushed album sales to double platinum status. The hype surrounding this single also landed the band a cameo in the Billy Crystal and Robin Williams’ movie “Father’s Day”.

The group released their sarcastically titled follow up “14:59” in 1999. The album’s title was a statement against the criticism of those labeling the group as a one hit wonder. It was a hint that their 15 minutes of fame had not yet expired. The band’s assessment seemed to be spot on. The album debuted at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and contained two standout singles “Every Morning”, which entered the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart at No. 3 and “Someday” which entered at No. 7.

Sugar Ray started off the turn of the millennium recording a cover of John Cale and Brian Eno’s “Spinning Away” for the Danny Boyle dystopian film “The Beach”. They also made another appearance in the 2002 film “Scooby-Doo”, but before that they released their 2001 self-titled album that rose to commercial success thanks due to the hit single “When It’s Over”.

In 2003 the band issued their album “In the Pursuit of Leisure”, which featured a cover of Joe Jackson’s “Is She Really Going Out with Him” . In 2005 they put out a greatest hits album that contained previously unreleased material.

Following the release of their greatest hits album the band took a break from recording and touring. They were also released from their contract with Atlantic Records during this time. The group broke this period of inactivity with the release of “Into Yesterday” which was specifically written for the “Surf’s Up” soundtrack and they also went on a small tour in Asia. Sugar Ray put out their long awaited follow up “Music For Cougars” in 2009 and subsequently did a round of nostalgic tours with artists such as Smash Mouth and the Spin Doctors.

Live reviews

I have had the pleasure of seeing Sugar Ray in concert several times since the 1990s and most recently saw them at Coachella.

They are truly a band that is best experienced live because they lose a lot of their luster on the radio. During their live performance they bounce around the stage, interact with the audience, and infuse the crowd with an energy to just jump around and be happy.

You would never believe that Mark McGrath is almost 50. He still has the energy and stage presence of a much younger man. He was dancing and running all over the stage at Coachella. The Sugar Ray shows that I have seen have kept it simple on stage. It is usually just the band, some lights, and maybe a few fog machines.

Every time I have seen them they mixed in fan favorites like “Fly,” “Someday” and, of course, “Every Morning” with their more recent music, as well as a few covers. The line-up that I saw at Coachella was not entirely the same as it has been in the past, but the music is basic and enjoyable, and Mark McGrath is still writing and singing the songs, so nothing has really changed.

Every time that I have saw them they have also performed for at least an hour or two, unless time was limited by a festival schedule. Sugar Ray is just a classic band that is guaranteed to give you a good, entertaining show, no matter what.

Sugar Ray always kills it!! Last night was no deviation from that. All of the bands (Eve 6, Better Than Ezra, Uncle Kracker) were all hands down part of one of the better shows I have seen all year.

The Ascend Amphitheater is a great venue, aesthetically and seating wise. However; the prices for items should have included KY. $15 for a can of beer is utterly absurd. Parking was $30. My advice, eat first and find transportation.

Mark did an awesome job. Always energetic and committed to his music and the crowd can feel it loud and clear. I took my wife of 28 years and two daughters 27 and 19. Even they enjoyed it as much as we did. This was part of our San Diego vacation and would do it again next year. Thanks!

Sugar Ray stole the show with Blues Traver a close second. It's crazy because I have loved BT from their beginning and went to the show to see BT. But Mark was truly awesome! He worked his butt off up there. I wish I could say the same for Smash Mouth and Uncle K.

Mark McGrath on the Ugly Truth About Sugar Ray (And Why Their New Album Still Rocks)

By Steve Appleford

Steve Appleford

M ark McGrath knows what you’re thinking. The singer never called Sugar Ray the world’s greatest rock & roll band, but they had some fun during their peak years in the ’90s with bouncy radio hits like “Fly” and “Every Morning.” They toured the world, sold millions of records and landed on the cover of Rolling Stone in March 1999. “That’s when they were really giving it away for free,” McGrath jokes in a typically self-deprecating rasp.

Sugar Ray never broke up, and have continued to tour even during the increasingly lean years that followed their ’90s boom. McGrath also recently finished a four-year run as TV host of the entertainment news show Extra , helping keep score on Nick and Jessica and Brad and Angelina. And today, Sugar Ray release their first new album since 2003, Music For Cougars , and begin a national tour with Fastball on July 24th.

It’s an unexpected new chapter for the original Orange County lineup of McGrath, guitarist Rodney Sheppard, drummer Stan Frazier, bassist Murphy Karges and DJ Homicide (a.k.a. Craig Bullock), now recording for Pulse/Universal/Fontana. The new album features guest appearances by Rivers Cuomo, Donovan Frankenreiter and others, and was produced by Josh Abraham and Luke Walker.

As a grinning, unshaven McGrath sits in the studio at Pulse Recording in Los Angeles, a tall cup of Pepsi from 7-Eleven at his feet, he sounds happy to be back full time with the band. “We’ve been through all the things of Behind the Music — the drugs, the chicks, having money, having no money, and I think the biggest reward of this band is that we’re still together after all these years,” says McGrath, now 41. “Getting onstage together is like the first time we ever jammed. The joy of playing with these guys still exists.”

How did this record come together? Obviously, there is not this huge demand to make a Sugar Ray record from the public. It was, hey, we still got all our parts together, we still like each other, we’re still a band after 21 years, and we haven’t been creative in about six. We had no new material, and we said, sure, let’s try it. In September, I left Extra , and it became a full-time thing.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

You had been doing all that TV. Was it different coming back to it like this? It was great to get back to what your passion is. I don’t think anybody looks at me as a songwriter musician guy. Probably just the opposite. But I love it so much. I started as a fan first, and willed my way into being in a band and figuring out how to write songs. It was great to scratch that itch of writing again. This is where I came to work everyday, not Extra . I got to wear my clothes. I got to be me again.

You guys never broke up? There was a misconception because I was at Extra . We played about 30-40 shows a year. If you were at Shrimp Fest or the county fair and you smelled funnel cake, Sugar Ray was playing. That Spinal Tap/puppet show thing was happening to us. We did a best-of in 2005, and we had a single on the Surf’s Up soundtrack in 2007.

Was that a weird period for the band? In 2003, the writing was on the wall for bands like Smashmouth, Third Eye Blind, Everclear, Barenaked Ladies — bands in our fraternal mid-’90s modern-rock universe. Radio was changing. In 2003, we hired the Neptunes to be a little R&B and funk, and that didn’t really work for us. We sold 135,000 copies, coming off a platinum-selling record in 2001. We thought, maybe we should stop and smell the flowers and see what else is out there for us.

I’m dumb enough to host these music and awards shows, and some chick at Extra saw it and said, “You kind of suck at hosting, but there’s something there.” Two weeks later, I’m hosting Extra . The other guys had new little babies and stuff. It was actually a good time to do it.

Your later tours already had a showbiz flavor. At one, you even had a spinning carnival wheel onstage. I wasn’t the guy sitting in the garage writing Built to Spill songs. I enjoyed the entertainment aspect. I never claimed not to be a douche. We know what we’re doing. It’s guys from the beach who grew up and got lucky, snuck in the back door of the record industry and sold some records. At the end of the day, we wrote some good songs. We’re certainly not the most talented guys, and I can barely sing, but how about two thumbs up for just having fun?

With this record, were you aiming to recapture the original Sugar Ray vibe? Definitely. If we’re making a record, let’s make a record that people want to hear. I think the first single, “Boardwalk,” sounds like something you might have heard 10 years ago. We didn’t want to reinvent ourselves.

Where did the album title come from? We were playing at the Grove [mall] here in Hollywood, a funny gig on a Sunday, people walking by with strollers. And a friend of ours goes, “All your fans are cougars.” That’s fucking brilliant. To me “cougars” is an empowering word. It’s like role reversal. Cougars are proud, they take care of themselves and they know what they want. If you’re offended by Music for Cougars on a Sugar Ray record, you’ve got to take a big look inward.

A lot of people might be surprised to hear that the Sex Pistols are your favorite band. The Sex Pistols let me think anybody could do it. If you had the balls to go up there, you could do it. The Sex Pistols tore down the archaic, dinosaur vision of Rick Wakeman/wizardry/keyboard setups. In ’83-’84, that really spoke to me. Back then, I just wanted to be in a band and play Sex Pistols, Judas Priest, Blondie covers around a keg. The Pistols gave me the inspiration to do that. It’s amazing how young those guys were. Think about what you were doing at 19 or 20.

Are you still doing TV? I’ve got a few irons in the fire, but going back to hosting an entertainment news program? I don’t think I would do that. It was fun, but it’s just not my passion. We’ll see what happens. There’s a bunch possibilities. Probably The Surreal Life 8 or something.
