Flying to Puerto Rico

There are two primary airports to choose from when flying to Puerto Rico:

Aguadilla Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN)

We highly recommend that visitors (especially those flying from the East Coast of the US) utilize the Aguadilla Airport (BQN). It is only 20 minutes from Rincón and is serviced daily by JetBlue, United and Spirit Airlines.

San Juan International Airport (SJU)

If you’re on a tighter budget or flying from the West Coast, you may choose the much larger San Juan Int’l Airport (SJU), but it requires a 2.5 hour drive to Rincón from metropolitan San Juan.

Driving and Rental Cars in Rincón

We highly recommend that visitors rent a car either in Aguadilla or San Juan for the duration of their stay. Rincón is not an area with easy walking or even biking access due to the more spread out rural area and numerous hills.

Driving to the Rincón Surf Resort

The Rincón Surf Resort at Las Palmas is located at Carr. 413, Interior Road, KM 4.8, Rincón, Puerto Rico 00677. But, most GPS systems will not recognize this address. To locate us, follow these directions:

FROM SAN JUAN:  Set your GPS for Aguadilla, PR and take the exit to the right leaving San Juan airport (do not take the bridge), following signs for PR-26 West and the Minillas Tunnel. After going through the tunnel, take the PR-22 (tollway) West exit towards Bayamon/Arecibo when leaving San Juan airport. Follow PR-22 until it ends in Arecibo and becomes Route 2. Continue to follow Route 2 until you reach the first Walgreens in Aguadilla at the intersection with PR-107. Go straight and continue on Route 2 for 5.5 miles to a large pedestrian overpass and a traffic light at the intersection of Route #417. Make a right turn on Route #417. About two miles after making the right turn, look for a sign in the middle of the road indicating “Avenida Nativo Alers” sharply to the left in front of a Cemetery entrance. Take the sharp left onto Avenida Nativo Alers until it dead ends into Route #115, where you will take a left towards Rincon. Drive for about four miles to reach the intersection of Route #413 where it veers sharply up the hill on the right. Take the right uphill onto Route #413 and follow it until you see the GULF gas station (open 24 hours). Take the right turn immediately after the GULF gas station, following the road down to the bottom of the hill and along the beach. When you see the TAMBOO, make a left turn at the next road and proceed 250 feet to the Rincon Surf Resort at Casa Verde Hotel. If you have any issues, do not hesitate to call: 787.823.0610 .

FROM AGUADILLA:  Turn left to leave at the stop sign to exit the airport towards the city of Aguadilla. This road leaving the airport turns into Route #107 – continue through Aguadilla until you reach the (large) intersection with Highway #2. As you approach Highway #2, stay right following signs towards Mayaguez. Stay on Highway #2 for approximately 5.5 miles, where you will see a large pedestrian overpass and a traffic light at the intersection of Route #417.

How to Get to Rincón, Puerto Rico

This is our preferred method on almost all of our trips. Puerto Rico is not a large island, but it is difficult to get around.

We flew into San Jan Luiz Munoz Marin International Airport and rented a car . While it may not be the cheapest option, renting a car provides flexibility in case you’d like to explore more than just the surfing in Rincón.

Hire a Taxi

You could also hire a taxi or a private driver . It would be difficult to convince a standard San Juan taxi driver to go to Rincón, however we have heard about private drivers offering up their services in Facebook groups . This might be a good option if you plan on staying longer than a week or so.

Fly to Aguadilla

Finally, you can fly from San Juan to Aguadilla and then take a taxi to Rincón . This likely works well if you are traveling light, however if you have your own surf boards the fees and expenses could make it cost prohibitive.

What are the Surf Seasons in Rincón, Puerto Rico?

Kid Surfing in Rincón, Puerto Rico

Surf Season

The surf season in Rincón runs from August to Apri l, however the best and most consistent waves are in December, January, and February . This is because the winter swells from the North Atlantic Ocean hit the northwestern part of the island.

It also avoids hurricane season, which runs from June to November !

Shoulder Season

The shoulder seasons in March/April and September/October are known to produce some waves, but they are inconsistent and average around 2–4 feet. The lower height is great for beginners, but the inconsistent swells makes them hard to predict.

June to August produces almost zero swells . While you may see waves, they are not the type you want to be surfing in.

Do I need a wetsuit to surf in Rincón, Puerto Rico?

No, you do not need a wetsuit to surf in Rincón, Puerto Rico . The water is exceptionally warm, even in the winter.

History of Surfing in Rincón, Puerto Rico (Rincon Vacations)

Rincon, Puerto Rico has some of the best surfing in the Caribbean and across the globe, earning its reputation as the “ surfing capital of the Caribbean .”

Now it is known globally as a respected surf town where you can catch world-class waves while enjoying La Isla del Encanto , also known as Puerto Rico.

Surf Spots – North Rincon

North Rincon covers the area from Surfer’s Beach all the way up to Shore Island . When looking at a map, it is on the top of the map .

Antonio’s

Antonio’s provides a great mix with fun rights and lefts breaking over a long stretch of reef . We’d recommend getting there early , although there usually is plenty of space. Antonio’s is best on a NW or NE swell with winds from the south.

Parking Lots

Parking Lots is a great spot for surfers of all levels . As the name says, it is located in front of the parking lot on the right by Casa Islena.

It is right next to Antonios and has the same mix of fun rights and lefts . The bottom is a mix of sand and rock, and like Antonios, the afternoon trade winds can muck things up. Get there early.

Sandy Beach

Sandy Beach is another great spot for surfers of all abilities . It is located just south of Parking Lots in front of Tamboo Tavern. As with Antonio’s and Parking Lots, Sandy Beach is best with a good NW or NE swell and a south wind.

If the conditions are perfect , you’ll get long, workable lefts heading down the reef . But be forewarned, while the sandy bottom means no jagged reefs, it does have a nasty undertow . You can check current conditions on the Surfline Cam .

Pools has a couple of nice reef breaks that can be fun to mix in . It can be a really heavy wave, so is best for advanced surfers.

Pools Beach is the next spot after Sandy Beach when you are heading south through Rincón. It is protected from the prevailing Northeast Trade Winds so needs a good Northwest swell to break well, and the more westerly the better.

Surf Spots – West Rincón

Check out this complete guide to the 12 best breaks for surfing in Rincón, Puerto Rico, including gear rental and hotels.

West Rincón is in the middle when looking at a map . It covers the area from Maria’s Beach up to Playa Domes and has some of the best surf spots with perfect waves.

Playa Domes

Domes is a long and hollow wave that is good for all abilities . It is a popular spot and the Corona Extra Pro Circuit is held here every year . It is best with a NE or NW swell and a SE wind. It is largely a flat rock bottom.

Located on the south edge of Carpinteria, R incón Point is known as one of the best surfing spots in Puerto Rico . It consists of a couple of breaks including Indicator, River Mouth, and The Cove and hosts surf competitions each year.

Indicators is for experienced surfers only . It offers very hollow rights when it is breaking well . It is generally not crowded as it can be dangerous and there is no channel to paddle out in, so get ready to work. Furthermore, it has a reef and sharp rock bottom and produces big waves.

Maria’s Beach

Maria’s is great for all levels . It is a popular spot and its long rights can be huge . It is best with a NW swell and E or NE winds. The bottom is reef and rock. You can keep an eye on conditions on this camera .

Surf Spots – South Rincón

Finally, South Rincón is the lower part when looking at a map . It covers the area from Little Malibu up to Dogman’s.

Dogman’s

Dogman’s is another break that is better for experienced surfers . It is just south of Maria’s and is far less crowded.

It offers hollow and fast lefts and rights with a shallow reef and rock bottom .

Tres Palmas

Tres Palmas is the Caribbean’s most famous and dependable big wave spot and is for very experienced surfers only . It is a legendary right-hand reef break that requires a big NE swell and easterly winds. It usually doesn’t start breaking until it is double-overhead.

Spanish Wall Beach – Visit Rincón

Spanish Wall Beach is an intimate, secluded beach that can only be accessed via trails from Domes Beach . It is a popular destination for surfers of all levels that don’t mind a short hike.

Little Malibu & The Marina

Malibu is for experienced surfers only , as it breaks over sharp coral in very shallow water. It is a very hollow and fast right-hander .

But if you don’t surf, you will still fall in love with Rincon and the laid-back vibe it has to offer. Plus I’ve included some day-trip ideas you shouldn’t miss when on the West Side of the Island.

How to get to Rincon Puerto Rico

Rincon, meaning ‘corner’,  is located on the western side of Puerto Rico. The closest airport is the Aguadilla Rafael Hernandez Airport (BQN).

How far is Rincon from San Juan Airport?  The drive from San Juan airport to Rincon is a 2.5-hour drive to 3-hour drive.

Getting Around Rincon Puerto Rico:  You will need a rental car to get around Rincon. This surf town is built on a hillside with steep roads and winding turns.

Rincon puerto Rico

Where to Stay in Rincon Puerto Rico

Rincon is more of a region than a town. There is a town center, but is only 4 square blocks. It is not necessary to stay near the ‘downtown area’.

You’ll be close to a beach regardless of if you stay on the north or the center of Rincon as beaches line the entire town.

In fact, Rincon is quite small, you can drive from one end to the other side within 15 minutes.

And if you visit for more than 2 days, you’ll have the roads memorized as there are only a few of them!

To Note: Rincon is built on a hill, so some of the accommodations, especially ones with epic views, require you to drive up very steep roads. Be sure to keep that in mind when booking if you are uncomfortable driving in tight spaces.

There aren’t a lot of hotels in Rincon. I have listed them below, but you might be better of renting an Airbnb. Here are my accommodation recommendations:

Hotels in Rincon:

  • Tres Sirenas: Luxury beachfront boutique hotel
  • Casa Islena : Casual beachfront hotel with ocean views + large pool
  • Rincon Beach Resort: Located on Añasco Beach, Rincon Beach resort has simple rooms, a pool, and ocean views
  • Casa Verde : Beachfront hotel with a pool

Airbnb’s in Rincon:

  • Private Pool Suite with Exterior Tub
  • Great Location with Pool
  • Bohemian Suites

If you ever wanted to learn how to surf, Rincon is the place! Learn from the best at Rincon Surf School where you can take solo lessons, private lessons, or group lessons. Rincon Surf School teaches beginners up to novice surfers.

Yoga on the Beach

Barefoot Yoga offers classes open to all levels of yoga in a calming outdoor space. Drop-in classes are $18, which includes your mat rental. You can catch group classes every day at 9 AM. Check online for more times and class schedules.

See the Faro Punta Higüeras Lighthouse

Rincon Puerto Rico

A landmark that you’ll spot from nearly all high viewpoints of Rincon is the Faro Punta Higüesras Lighthouse built in 1892 by the Spanish government.

You can walk around the nearby park for views of the ocean, and get cozy at Ola Sunset Cafe for a cocktail and light bites.

Snorkel & Scuba Dive

Book a snorkel or scuba tour with Taino Divers to the uninhabited island of Descheco 13 miles from the coast of Rincon.

Desecho was used as military practice in the 1960s and active bombs still remain on the island. It is illegal to step foot on the island, however, the waters surrounding the island are a marine reserve.

Wildlife fills these waters making it a must for scuba enthusiasts.

Go Shopping

While the ‘downtown’ area of Rincon is quite small, you can still find unique shops for special finds in Rincon Puerto Rico. Shops to check out:

  • Tinto Wine Shop: Wine shop meets wine bar. You can find great bottles of wine, plus Tinto Wine Shop offers tastings.
  • Ocean State of Mind: The place to go for your boho/ beach needs. This cute shop sells everything from jewelry, swim, crystals, books, and more.
  • Uncharted Studio:  Eco-conscious silk printing shop selling unique t-shirts.

Take in the Sunset:

Rincon Puerto Rico

The sunsets in Rincon are special because they can be seen directly from Rincon, with cotton candy colors. Be sure to be around the beaches during sunset to take them in, or head to The Beach House for epic unobstructed views with a $4 rum punch.

Or you can book a sunset cruise to catch the beautiful view on the water.

Visit the Beaches

Whether you are visiting Rincon to surf, or just want to take in the sun, you will find plenty of gorgeous untouched beaches. See below for my beach recommendations:

Best Beaches in Rincon Puerto Rico

Domes beach.

Rincon puerto Rico 12

My personal favorite beach, Domes Beach has the largest waves for surfing in Rincon and is near an inactive nuclear plant which creates unique scenery.

While I don’t personally surf, it was very interesting to watch. Plus this beach had a very large open feel with plenty of space.

Sandy Beach

This beach is very secluded uncrowded beach located on the northern part of Rincon. You won’t find resorts here, but you can find small boutique hotels lining the beach.

Tamboo, a popular bar and seaside grill is in the center of this beach.

Steps Beach

Rincon Puerto Rico

Named after the bizarre concrete steps sitting at the water’s edge, Steps Beach is a small secluded beach great for snorkeling when the waves are calm and for unforgettable sunsets.

Great For: Surfing, Snorkeling, Sunsets

Balneario de Rincon

This beach is within walking distance from the downtown and has its own free parking. Balneraio de Rincon is the best beach in Rincon for its tranquil waters great for swimming.

Great for: full beach day, swimming

In winter you’ll find the best waves in Rincon for surfing, while the calmer summer months are more favorable for swimming and snorkling.

Breakfast in Rincon

rincon restaurants

Cafe 2 Go: My favorite stop for breakfast. Very casual walk-up spot for coffee, acai bowls, and breakfast sandwiches. Seating and parking are both available. The bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant and coffee were 10/10! (Cash Only)

The English Rose : The place for breakfast offering stunning views overlooking the ocean. You’ll have to drive up a steep road to get here, but the view is worth it. Plus the menu is affordable. Be sure to make a reservation as seats are limited.

The Juice Box: Great stop for fresh juices and acai bowls.

Jakes Java : Coffee and smoothie shop conveniently located right near Steps Beach on the North Side.

Where to Eat in Rincon Puerto Rico

Rincon Puerto Rico

Tamboo :  Tamboo is a bar and a seaside grill, with front-row views of the ocean. I stopped by for lunch I was surprised at how great the food and service were here.

The menu has lots of fresh items like tuna tartare and ceviche, along with vegan options.

Estela :  Let the 5-star reviews speak for themselves. Estela is one of the ‘fancier’ restaurants in Rincon for a nice evening out. The menu changes for the freshest ingredients plus there is a full vegan menu.

The cocktails were especially unique with infused ice cubes! Be sure to make a reservation in advance, as the weekend spots book out weeks in advance.

Where to Drink in Rincon

Rincon puerto Rico 8

The Beach House : (Pictured Above) The place to be during sunset! On top of a hill, you get unobstructed views of the ocean happy hour $4 rum punch, and live music! Plus the food here is actually delicious, the tacos are a must. In fact, I ate dinner here twice during my stay!

Ola Sunset Cafe : Another great spot to watch the sunset overlooking Domes Beach.

El Bohio : Chill quaint outside bar, serving drinks right outside Maria’s Beach.

Rincon Beer Company:  Have 16 different brews on tap to choose from in a casual relaxed environment.

Day Trips from Rincon Puerto Rico

The great thing about being situated in Rincon is the many opportunities for day trips to see some of the island’s stunning natural wonders.

If you have a loose itinerary for your trip to Puerto Rico, I highly suggest taking a drive to see even more beauty of Puerto Rico.

Here are my suggestions on places you can see on a day trip from Rincon: Playa Sucia , Playa Buye, Gonzalia Falls.

Playa Sucia, Cabo Rojo

Playa Sucia

Located at the Southern tip of Puerto Rico is a U shaped landmass with a gorgeous cove beach called Playa Sucia. Sucia translates to ‘dirty’ and the name is very misleading. Here you will find pristine calm blue waters and a completely uncrowded beach.

The surrounding area has hiking trails where you can see the Farros Los Morillos Lighthous e built-in 1882, and a unique rock formation called Puente de Piedra .

You can easily spend a few hours soaking up the sun here, plus taking time hiking the trails nearby for breathtaking views!

How to Get to Playa Sucia:  The drive from Rincon to Playa Sucia is about 1 hour and 20 minutes depending on traffic. The majority of the drive is on the main highway road, but the last leg of the trip is along a narrow dirt road.

You will also pass the Salinas de Cabo Rojo. These pink salt baths are instaworthy, however, they are working salt fields, and there is no clear way to access them. To be honest, in person I didn’t see any water that pink, so trying to find an entrance was a pass for me.

Things to Note:

  • Parking: When driving to Playa Sucia you will find a few opportunities to park your car (all free) the first parking spots are closest to the hiking trails. If you want to park closest to the beach drive until the end. You’ll get the closest spot if you arrive early in the day.
  • Food: There are no food vendors in the area, so if you plan on staying for a full day bring a cooler with food and water.
  • Shoes : The terrain here is rocky, bring sneakers if you plan on climbing the trails. I managed in flip-flops but it wasn’t too comfortable.
  • Bathroom: None
  • Drones: When driving to Cabo Rojo, you will see a huge blimp in the sky. This blimp detects radio waves and flying a drone in the area is prohibited.

Playa Buye, Cabo Rojo

Puerto Rico Beaches

Another option for a day trip is Playa Buye. The white sand and gorgeous turquoise waters really wowed me- they look even better in person. This beach also offers plenty of shade, and well as spots for full sun sunbathing.

Playa Buye is a perfect stop for a full beach day and my personal favorite beach in Puerto Rico. There are food vendors, plenty of space to spread out, and a local vibe- cue the salsa music. This beach is definitely more crowded on the weekends but still relaxing.

Be sure to walk along the entire beach to find a hidden spot where boats park. It is gorgeous in person.

How to Get to Playa Buye:  From Rincon, Playa Buye is one hour drive south. If you are coming from Playa Sucia, as mentioned above it’s 45 minutes, making it accessible for one day trip.

  • Parking:  There is free parking located right by the beach. The earlier you come the better spot you’ll get.
  • Food: There are food vendors right on the beach.
  • Bathroom: Yes, next to the food vendors
You can see Playa Sucia & Playa Buye on one day trip, both located in Cabo Rojo. However, both beaches are tempting for a full day on their own. If I had to pick one out of the two, Playa Buye would be my pick for an ultimate full day at the beach.

Gozalandia Falls, San Sebastian

Gozalandia

The 60-foot Gozalandia Waterfall in San Sebastian is a must-visit and natural beauty in Puerto Rico.

You can swim in the pond, jump (if you dare) from the waterfall, and spend a few hours here taking it all in. Plus you’ll be able to see plenty of fish through the clear water.

It wasn’t too busy when I visited on a Wednesday afternoon, however, I assume it gets pretty busy on the weekends.

How to Get to Gozalandia Falls:  The waterfall is located east of Rincon, in San Sebastian, and would take about 50 minutes to get to. There is parking right next to the falls for a $10 fee.

Once parked, you have to take a 5-minute walk to the waterfall, going down a few steps.

  • Parking: $10 to park in the large parking lot, a 5-minute walk to the Waterfall.
  • Food: There is a small eatery/bar next to the parking lot with outdoor seating.
  • Bathroom:  Yes, near the parking lot
  • Shoes : If you plan on going swimming in the water, water shoes are a must! The rocks to get in have slippery moss, and it’s easy to fall without any grip.

Things to Pack for Rincon Puerto Rico

Loved this and the video. Question for you. Headed to Rincon later this Spring and my husband is insisting I don’t carry a purse or waist bag. (I’d love to know what he thinks I should do with my phone and cards.) How did you carry your stuff? Purse? Waist bag? Beach bag or backpack? Thanks so much!

Hey – I just watched your Rincon vlog – it was so helpful thanks. We live in Chicago (my husband and I and our three adult kids) and are thinking about Puerto Rico for winer break this year. We still have a kid in college and another is a teacher so they can stil swing a family vacation. We are usually california people and love the laid back vibe of Malibu and Topanga Canyon, but are ready for somewhere different. We are thinking about splitting the time between San Juan and Rincon. If we had a week, in which place would you spend the extra day – In Rincon or San Juan? We definitaly want to relax but I am sure the kdis will love some nightlife and activities too. This would be our first trip to PR. Four out of the five of us are vegan so I also wanted to ask about that – are there good enough options in both areas? That’s a big reason we love Cali – amazing vegan food everywhere! Anyway – let me kow if you also have a vlog or recs for San Juan – would love any advice. This ia going to be the only trip we all take together this year so I want to get the locations right. Our middle kid is a spanish teacher so we have someone to translate! Thanks so much! Jill

Your Guide to the Best Surfing in Rincon, Puerto Rico

Rincón is the unofficial surfing capitol of the Caribbean.  With consistent swells from December to April, warm water temps, and a tropical island full of culture, Rincón Puerto Rico is one of the best places for a surf trip.

My husband and I have been visiting and surfing in Rincón, Puerto Rico for over twenty five years!

There are waves in Rincón for all abilities and types of surfers.  Rincón has great beginner waves when the waves are small, fun ripple waves for more experienced surfers and barreling sections for advanced surfers. There is even a spot for big wave surfing too.

Keep reading for more on surfing in Rincón Puerto Rico and details on the different surf spots in this famous Caribbean surf town.

Check the Rincon Surf Report on Surfline.

Surfing in Rincón FAQ

Table of Contents

Where is Rincón?

Rincon is a surf town on the west coast of the island of Puerto Rico with some of the best waves in the Caribbean.

Is Rincón good for surfing?

Rincon is one of the best places (or the best place) to surf in the Caribbean. It is a great surf trip for people from eastern United States in the winter. The flight from New York is only 4 hours!

Tip: fly into Rafael Hernández International Airport in Aguadilla a town only 30 minutes from Rincon.

What is the surf season in Rincón?

Surf season in Rincon (and most of the Caribbean) is from December to April when winter storm systems in the North East of the United States create long period swells that reach Puerto Rico. Waves are pretty consistent this time of year but can vary in size.

Is Rincón good for beginner surfers?

This is a more difficult questions to answer! Rincon is mostly reef breaks which isn’t always the best for super beginners. There is however one spot that is a beach break and when small enough a good place for beginners. Keep reading to find out this Rincon surf spot!

On another note, if you are comfortable surfing on a reef Rincon is a great place to improve your surfing skills. Because of the reef, waves tend to break in the same spot each time making it easy for beginners to read and catch waves.

Where can beginner surfers surf in Rincón?

If you are a beginner surfer you can hire a surf instructor at Maria’s Beach from Road2Happiness.

REMINDER : Always be aware of the ocean and your capabilities!  The ocean and waves in Rincon are strong.  If you are not an experienced surfer please hire an instructor to take you out and teach you the proper surf etiquette and technique.  Not only is it dangerous for you but also for the people around you!

Rincón Surf Spots

Rincon has a handful of different surf breaks. Half of them being on the north side of the point and the others facing west. This makes Rincon a great spot to surf in all different conditions and wind directions.

map of surf spots in rincon puerto rico

Sandy Beach

For waves on the north side side of Rincón (an area called Puntas) you’ll want to look out for a South wind and a North to NE swell.  Sandy Beach breaks off a rocky point and is a combination of a sand and reef bottom and is one of Rincón’s only lefts!

This is my favorite beach in Rincón and one of my favorite waves too! In a land of rights the goofy foot in me loves this left handed wave! There is also a shifting beach break right out in front of Tamboo restaurant with occasional barrels on the right conditions.

In the parking lot to the right of Tamboo you’ll also find Road2Happiness set up renting foamy surfboards and surf instructors available for a surf lesson.

After surfing head to Big Kahuna Bar and Restaurant up the street for a beer and burger.

Antonio’s

Antonio’s is just down the beach from Sandy Beach and is a great surf break for beginners and intermediates when the waves are small or a super fun and rippable wave when there is more size. Just make sure you’re there early before the trade winds or there is a south wind.

Since Antonios breaks over a flat, friendly reef this a good beginner friendly surf spot in Rincón when there is a small swell. When the surf is on, this north facing surf spot breaks farther out over the coral reef with both rights and lefts.

Tip: don’t miss out on the best breakfast in Rincón at Casa Isleña after your surf session.

Break: Reef Wind: South Swell: North West, North, North East

Pools is on the other side of the rock point from Sandy Beach and breaks over a very sharp and shallow reef.  This break is for intermediate to experienced surfers only as it is really shallow here.

Pools is a shorter more intense ride and with the right wind (South), dropping tide and swell direction pools can have a super fun, quick barreling section. But keep in mind the sharp reef here!

Fuel up after your surf with the fish sandwich from Jack’s Shack just across the street, you will not regret it!

Domes is just to the north of the Rincón Lighthouse and gets its name from the large Dome (a decommissioned nuclear power plant) seen from the water and beach.

Domes is one of the most popular beaches for surfing in Rincón and one of the most consistent waves in the area. For this reason Domes tends to get crowded early.

The wave breaks over a coral reef and is mostly a right hand wave. (there are some lefts in the middle of the beach) The good thing about Domes is that there are multiple peaks which allows for surfers to spread out.

Domes is an intermediates playground but on a large North West swell the rights are steep, quick and barreling.

After your surf session head to Ola Sunset Cafe for one of the best freshly made mojitos and an empanadilla! Ola Sunset Cafe is also a great spot to watch the sunset in Rincon and watch the surf from above!

Break: Reef Wind: North East Swell: North West, North, North East

Maria’s

Just a quarter of a mile farther south from Domes Beach and on the other side of the Rincón Lighthouse you will find Maria’s Beach.  Maria’s is another super popular surf spot in Rincón and has everything from beginners to experts depending on conditions.

When the waves are small there are a lot of surf lessons at Maria’s but when the waves are going off there are barreling sections to be ridden. Something for everyone.

Maria’s tends to get crowded but there are multiple peaks up and down the beach. Also keep in mind that the wave breaks about 100 yards from the shore so it always looks smaller from the beach than it actually is.

Tip: There are three keyholes in the coral to get in and out of the water at Maria’s. Watch other experienced surfers get in and out of the water if you’ve never surfed here before.

Road2Happiness is also set up here for surf lessons and board rentals daily!

Break: Reef Wind: North East Swell: North West, North

Tres Palmas

Rincón’s big wave surfing spot!

Tres Palmas has been recorded with waves as tall as 30 feet high and doesn’t even start breaking on the outer reef until around double over head.  The reason for this is due to the Puerto Rico trench which is the deepest spot in the Atlantic Ocean (and eighth in the world!) and sits just 30 miles off the coast of Puerto Rico and focuses the long period swell into huge waves.

When large winter swells appear you’ll see wave lines for miles and a handful of big wave surfers with guns testing their luck trying to catch one of the giant waves. Tres Palmas is only for experienced big wave surfers with the right equipment and training.

Break: Outer Reef Wind: North East Swell: North West, North

Little Malibu & The Marina

Those big winter swells when Tres Palmas is breaking and 15 plus feet?  A wave appears at Little Malibu which is accessible from the Rincón Marina, a great beach in Rincón for families with kids.  The wave breaks over a sharp and shallow reef right in front of the jetty at the Marina.

Tip: kids can surf right in the Marina over a sandy bottom on small waves when Little Malibu is breaking.

Where Should you Stay in Rincón on a Surf Trip?

There are only a handful of good hotels in Rincón, which honestly is kinda nice that it is not super built up with a “hotel zone”. There are tons of great airbnbs available too. Below are some of the smaller hotels I would recommend to stay at in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Did you know: when you book a stay from any of the links on TRVL Collective, I earn a small commission which helps keep this blog running and at no additional cost to you!  Thank you for supporting!

Casa Verde – two minute walk to Sandy Beach for those who don’t mind some noise from the popular bar next door Casa Isleña – on the water at Sandy Beach with an awesome restaurant Tres Palmas at La Cambija – right at Tres Palmas with gorgeous views and great restaurant Tres Sirenas – small boutique style Inn on the water (10 minute drive to surf breaks)

Tips for Surfing in Rincón:

  • Rincón is mostly reef breaks. Be aware of sharp coral on low tides.
  • Be careful where you get in and out of the water. There are urchins hiding in the coral.
  • Know your ability and don’t go out in conditions you’re not comfortable with. You can be a danger not only to yourself but other surfers.
  • You don’t need a wetsuit to surf in Puerto Rico. The ocean is very warm even in the winter.
  • If flying on JetBlue be prepared to pay $100 per surfboard per way!! It’s actually insane how much they charge.

Complete 2023 Guide to Surfing in Rincon, Puerto Rico

  • Post published: December 14, 2022
  • Post category: Destinations / Puerto Rico
  • Reading time: 15 mins read

The gorgeous warm weather, crystal clear water and sun shining down on you makes the west coast town of Rincon in Puerto Rico a surf haven. All east coast surfers flock down to this Caribbean island every winter when the waves are pumping and the water back home is freezing. The town of Rincon sees a surge in both the water and on land where the surfers gather to practice and take part in surf championships every year. Surfing in Rincon, Puerto Rico is a privilege that very few lucky surfers get to experience. If you are one of those lucky ones, then read on how to make your surf trip to Rincon, Puerto Rico the best ever.

History of Surfing in Rincon, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico had an already growing surf culture in the mid 1900s when the 1968 world surfing championship put the town of Rincon front and center of the news. The championship was held at Maria’s beach where the waves were reaching up to 15 feet on the day of the championship. Since then the Rincon Surf Fest has been annually holding championships and honoring the best surfers. Not only that, Rincon also held a spot in the WSL qualifying series for 2019.

The history of surfing in Rincon, Puerto Rico is intimately connected to the history of the island. Before 1898 there existed almost no ocean culture on the island. The cities were built inland because the ocean was considered dangerous and filled with pirates. After colonization and Californication of the island, surfing quickly rose to the top preferred sports of the people and it is now practiced more than all the other sports on the island combined.

How to Get to Rincon

If you are landing in San Juan Luiz Munoz Marin International Airport then the easiest way to get around the island would be in a car. You can rent a car on the lower level of the airport. I should warn you though that the car rental prices in recent years have soared beyond what is feasible for most travelers. You end up paying  more than $1500 dollars to rent a car for a month.

Hire a taxi

Taxi rides from San Juan to Rincon and back cost us about $200. This is a much cheaper option than renting a car. The cars are big hatchbacks or trucks that can easily fit your board in the back. To find such services go on Facebook and search. You can easily call and find a few local drivers that are regularly driving this route. Some of them even drop prices if there are lots of people going to Rincon and they are taking a big bus.

Fly to nearest airport

Alternatively you can fly from San Juan to Aguadilla for $45 and then take a taxi from there to Rincon. If you plan ahead properly, this becomes the cheapest option to get to Rincon out of all the three above.

Surf Season in Rincon

Surf season

The surf season in Rincon is from August to April, though the best waves are during December, January and February. This is when the winter swells from the north Atlantic hit the north and west part of the island. The hurricane season runs from June to November so you’ll be in the clear for any storms as well.

Shoulder season

March – April and September – October are the shoulder seasons which might produce some waves but they are not consistent. The waves are smaller at 2-4ft which might be better for beginners but the inconsistency makes it harder to predict when the next swell will hit.

Between June to August there are absolutely no swells. There might be some larger waves due to hurricanes approaching the island but the water tends to be very dirty and the waves are very choppy which is not worth it.

Temperatures

The temperature during the entire year remains a warm 25-30 degree celsius which negates the need for wetsuits. A rashguard and reef shoes are recommended because a lot of spots have sea urchins, especially in the surf breaks near Rincon.

Surf Breaks at Rincon

North rincon surf spots.

A versatile reef break that goes both ways. It is suitable for all skill levels. The right is much longer than the left. The breaks are soft and mellow and good for learning surfing. The only issue is that because of its northern location, the onshore winds blow out the waves by late morning so you have to get up really early to catch them.

Parking Lots

This is also a beginner friendly spot with both lefts and rights. The bottom is half reef and half sand. The waves get blown out by late afternoon due to onshore winds so this break works only in the early morning. You can paddle out right in front of the gas station.

Sandy Beach

A long open left hander that is good for all levels. The current here tends to be very strong and it’s hard to paddle to the lineup during bigger swells for beginners. The inside is still very fun. The sand drops down sharply to deeper water almost immediately. The break is right in front of Tamboo Tavern. There is not much crowd here.

This is a heavy wave that works better when the tide is filled in and there is a northwest swell. During high tide, intermediate surfers can also surf the wave but low tide is only for advanced surfers when the wave breaks with massive force on the reef. This is the first spot you will hit as you reach the west coast and go down south towards Rincon.

West Rincon Surf Spots

This is a hollow peaky right hander much more suited to intermediate and advanced surfers. It’s one of the most consistent waves in Rincon. The Corona Pro Surf Circuit is held here every February. Most surfers will end up here on the bigger days and beach gets very crowded due to photographers. The paddle out is a lot smaller than Maria’s. From Rincon, take Rt 413 north, go left to “El Faro” on Rt.4413 to the end at the old nuclear power plant and parking lot.

Between Maria’s and Domes is a shallow reef break for advanced surfers only. There is no channel so the paddle out is difficult but when the swell is working it produces hollow fast right tubes with no crowds at all. Take the steps down to the beach just before you get to the Puenta Higuera lighthouse.

This is a stretch of 100 yards with multiple takeoff zones. The paddle out is very far. Beginner friendly on smaller days but it can get very crowded due to this. When the swell is big the zones all connect and form a long right. It has a reef on the bottom so bigger days are best left to more advanced surfers. From Rincon, take Rt.413 north and go left at El Faro (Rt. 4413), 1/4 mile.

South Rincon Surf Spots

For experienced surfers only, this spot has hollow left and right waves that break over a shallow reef. When Maria’s is too crowded this is your best bet to score a few waves without the crowds. Park at Maria’s and walk south past the river mouth, paddle out past the pistons.

Tres Palmas

This is the wave that made Rincon famous. It’s the end of the reef that starts at Domes and goes much further out into the ocean. The wave only works at double overhead because this is when the deep trench at the reef turns the long period swells into big peaks. Only for advanced surfers because of the big wave size and the sharp reef underneath. Off Rt 413, dirt road at Km. 1.6 through pasture with cows.

Little Malibu

This is a fast and hollow right hand wave breaking over very shallow reefs and ending on rocks. Only recommended for advanced surfers. This is the last surf break before the coast becomes completely sandy and there are no more surf breaks further south.

Best Puerto Rico Tours

Puerto Rico has some really cool adventure tours that take you around the island. If you are into hiking then visit the El Yunque Rainforest with insane waterfalls and hikes. Another really fun day trip is a Catamaran Cruise to Culebra island where you get to party and relax on the sea. There are lots of places to explore around the island with snorkeling, ziplining and horseback riding as well!

Surf Lessons

There are multiple shops and freelance surf instructors that offer surf lessons in Rincon. I had my first ever surf lesson in Rincon and it was very educational and safe. Puntas Surf School is one such school that offers competitive and good surf lessons that will build up your skills from the very first time. Surf lessons start from $80 per person for 2 hours for group classes. They even have long term surf packages for those that are staying for a week or more.

Surf Shops in Rincon

Rincon has a few surf shops for ding repairs and buying surf boards but there is not a big culture of it here. IMO you should bring your own ding repair kit, epoxy and sandpaper to mend any dings. I would not trust any shops here to do good work on fiberglass boards.

Board Rentals

Boards can be rented from lots of rental shops that are situated right on the beach. Maria’s and Sandy Beach, which are beginner friendly beaches, have surf rental shops open out front all day long. Surf schools also rent out boards and take them to the beach of your choice if you ask in advance. Rentals for a full day usually cost $30.

Rincón: A Complete Guide to the Caribbean’s Best Surf Spot

Platea logo

Untouched beaches, a laid-back vibe and world-class surfing, Rincón is the kind of place Puerto Ricans would love to keep secret.

Surfers first descended on this small Northwest beach town for the 1968 World Surfing Championships—and an infectious, live-in-the-moment ethos still prevails. With unique places to stay, eat and drink, every visitor to Puerto Rico (non-surfers included) should plan on spending at least a few days. Within easy reach, you’ll find some of Puerto Rico’s most captivating landscapes and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

surf trip rincon puerto rico

The “Surf Capital of the Caribbean,” Rincón is known for its long, right-breaking waves. During the peak winter season, surfers of all levels are drawn to its consistent waves and epic diversity. You’ll always find dramatic swells at one beach or another. When the waves are smaller, beginners and intermediates can head to María’s Beach for long, clean rides.

Kelly Slater has regularly surfed fabled spots such as Domes Beach, Pools, Dogman’s Beach and Tres Palmas (also known as Steps beach)—recommended only for advanced and expert surfers. Experienced boarders can also check out Rincón Point, famed for its predictable waves all season long and distinct surfing locations (The Cove, Rivermouth and Indicator). There are many surf schools in Rincón where you can rent a board or sign up for classes.

“Early morning is always the best time to surf, but when the conditions are right, few things in life can compare to watching the sunset on your board at María’s Beach.”

– Oscar Cullen López.

There are over a dozen beaches in Rincón. North of town, past Domes Beach, paved coastal trails (great for running and cycling) lead to wild, rugged beaches with sea stacks, arches and caves offshore. Spanish Wall Beach is one of Puerto Rico’s most photogenic beaches. A swathe of palm-fringed golden sand—collecting sea-glass is a popular pastime here for beachcombers. At the area known as Trampa de Tiburon, you can take in panoramas of both the Atlantic and Caribbean. From January to April, beautiful Rincón Beach Park offers prime whale-watching. Córcega Beach’s shallow, calm waters (year-round) make it an ideal family-friendly destination for swimming and snorkeling.

Snorkeling and Diving

With a vibrant coral reef that runs parallel to the shore, Tres Palmas Marine Reserve is an accessible and rewarding snorkeling spot. This fragile ecosystem is home to Elkhorn coral, the healthiest in the Caribbean. It supports a colorful array of marine life, including large parrotfish, blue tang, turtles, snapper and lobsters . Dolphins are often spotted offshore. Be mindful that the waves can be strong here, so always try to snorkel in the morning when the water is calmer.

In the Mona Passage, 21km (13 miles) from Rincón, Desecheo Island is known (along with Mona and Monita island) as the Galapágos of Puerto Rico for its rare, endemic species. Often hailed as one of the best scuba sites in the Caribbean, this tiny island’s waters teem with life and seasoned divers can also explore fascinating geological features on the ocean floor. Tour operators in Rincón offer snorkeling and scuba diving excursions for all levels. Note that the island itself is protected as a wildlife refuge and visits are not permitted.

Day Trip: La Parguera Bioluminescent Bay

Less than an hour’s drive south of Rincón, La Parguera is known for its reefs—over a dozen—and abundant marine life, such as turtles, morays, manatees, barracudas and nurse sharks. Around 8km (five miles) offshore, La Parguera Wall is a pilgrimage for divers worldwide. It boasts over 25 dive sites, depths of up to 1,500 feet (457m) and impressive visibility, from 100 to 120 feet (30-37m). However, the main draw of La Parguera is its bioluminescent bay—a rare phenomenon that occurs when microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates converge with magical effect. A slight ripple from a hand or an oar causes the organisms to illuminate the dark waters. La Parguera is the only place in Puerto Rico where bio bay swimming and diving is permitted.

surf trip rincon puerto rico

When to Visit

On a peninsula off Puerto Rico’s West Coast, Rincón is surrounded by water on all three sides. Surfing conditions are prime from late fall to early spring. That’s when huge swells form from multiple directions and from two bodies of water—the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The whale-watching season runs from January to late March, turtle nesting season is from April to June. Flight prices and hotel rates are highest from December to April and many hotels require minimum stays (at least four days). If you travel in summer, from June to November, you are more likely to have secluded beaches all to yourself and greater hotel, restaurant and tour availability.

Getting There and Around

The most convenient airport is Aguadilla, a 45-minute drive away. However, you can expect to arrive and depart at ungodly hours. United , JetBlue and Spirit offer direct flights to Aguadilla from New York and Orlando for around $225 return trip. Another option is to drive from San Juan (around 3 hr.). Going by the apt moniker of the “Road to Happiness,” PR-413 is the main access road for Rincón’s beaches.

To get around, renting a car is strongly recommended. There are several car rental agencies at Aguadilla airport, including Enterprise and Sixt . Note that car rental prices can be significantly higher at Aguadilla airport than in San Juan.

Rincón has a wide selection of hotels, inns and Airbnbs across the budget spectrum. Many hotels offer yoga, surfing and snorkeling/diving packages through local operators. Flying to Puerto Rico

You have a two primary options to reach Puerto Rico:

We highly recommend that visitors (especially those flying from the US East Coast) utilize the Aguadilla Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN) . It is only 20 minutes from Rincón and serviced daily by JetBlue, United and Spirit Airlines.

If you’re on a tighter budget or flying from the US West coast, you may choose to use the much larger San Juan International Airport (SJU) — but it requires that you drive approximately 2.5 hours to Rincón from metropolitan San Juan.

Rincón, Puerto Rico (2024 Guide) – All You Need To Know

Rincón is a popular destination in Puerto Rico.

The Corona Pro Surf Circuit takes place in Rincón, which is known as “The town of beautiful sunsets.”

After spending 22 years in Puerto Rico and going on my fair share of road trips, I award Rincón the #1 beach destination.

In this article, you will learn all you need to know about Rincón:

– What is Rincón? – Where is Rincón located? – How far is Rincón from the airport? – What is the best way to get to Rincón from San Juan? – What is Rincón Puerto Rico known for? – Can you surf in Rincón? – Is Rincón Puerto Rico nice? – Is Rincón Puerto Rico worth visiting? – Other frequently asked questions

What is Rincón?

Rincón means ‘corner’ which perfectly describes the town’s angular shape pointing into the Caribbean Sea.

image of El Faro de Rincon

But the name actually comes from Don Gonzalo de Rincón.  In the 1500’s, he worked as a butler for Don Tomás de Castellano who was a well-known landowner.

He left his lands to Don Gonzalo de Rincón before he died.

When the town was officially founded in the 1700’s, it was named Santa Rosa de Rincón as a thank you to Don Gonzalo for letting families settle on his inherited lands. The name was later shortened to Rincón.

Check out the video below of Rincón:

Where is Rincón located?

Rincón is located on the northwest-side of the island, next to the towns of Añasco and Aguada.

surf trip rincon puerto rico

It covers the coastline of the farthest tip west of Puerto Rico.

Below is a Google Map showing the location of Rincón:

How far is Rincón from the airport?

The driving route to Rincón from Luis Muños Marín Airport in San Juan is just under three hours but completely worth it.

surf trip rincon puerto rico

There is also another international airport located thirty minutes north of Rincón in Aguadilla .

What is the best way to get to Rincón from San Juan?

I recommend going to Rincón through the north side.

San Juan is also located in the north, and this route has beautiful views when you pass through the town of Quebradillas.

Below is a Google Map showing best way to get to Rincón:

Friendly advice, avoid rush hour which is from 5 pm -7 pm.

What is Rincón Puerto Rico known for?

Rincón is known for its beaches.

image of an aerieal view of Rincon

Even us locals admire them.

I’m from Humacao, which is all the way on the other side of the island, and I don’t mind the 3 hour road trip.

It’s worth it.

surf trip rincon puerto rico

There are about 15 beaches to choose from. How do you know which one to go to? It all depends on what activities you wish to enjoy.

If you want to relax, tan and swim in the ocean, I recommend Playa los Almendros or Playa Córcega. Both have gentle waters and a relaxing ambience.

Friendly tip: bring your own food, drinks, beach chairs and umbrella.

Now, if you want to catch some waves, read below.

Can you surf in Rincón?

100% – It’s known as the capital of surfing for a reason.

image of Playa Domes

If you want to surf like the locals there are a couple of beaches to choose from. These are Playa Domes, Playa Tres Palmas and Playa Marias .

Each one has different characteristics.

The most popular one is Playa Domes or Domes Beach. It’s located next to the Punta Higuero Lighthouse and a Nuclear Reactor named “domes” (don’t worry, it’s inactive).

Playa Domes has hosted surfing competitions such as the Corona Pro Surf Circuit. That’s how tubular it is. After a day of surfing under the sun, you can recharge with the restaurants nearby.

image of Steps Beach, PR

Playa Tres Palmas is also known as “ Steps Beach ” because of the concrete steps that are in the sand (a great photo opportunity).

In the summer, it’s great for snorkeling because of visible coral reefs and marine life.

But, in the winter time, you’ll find the surfers. The waves swell too high for swimmers.

Steps also offers places to eat close by.

image of Maria's Beach

Lastly, Playa Maria is a great option for people who want to learn how to surf.

They give surfing lessons and you can rent surf boards from nearby vendors.

Fun fact, the beach hosted the 1968 World’s Surfing Championship where surfers would camp out behind a women’s house named Doña Maria. That’s where the name Playa Maria comes from.

If you are looking for other surfing spots, then check out our article about the 10 best surf spots in Puerto Rico .

Is Rincón Puerto Rico nice?

Yes! Rincón is a very nice town.

image of couple on the beach

It’s the best place to get away from the pressures of everyday life.

Once you enter the west side of the island, you feel like you’re in another world.

All mellow vibes with no rush. You will be on what we locals call, island time.

image of person doing surfing

Surfing is the main attraction but there is so much more to enjoy, like the local cuisine.

I celebrated my 25th birthday at Rincón Beer Company where they sell their own beers and tasty Puerto Rican bar food.

The plaza comes alive every Thursday night at art walk, and event that showcases local artisans, and on Sunday mornings at the farmers market.

The nicest part of Rincón is the people. They welcome you with open arms and make you feel right at home.

Is Rincón Puerto Rico worth visiting?

Definitely!

Rincón’s sunsets alone are worth visiting.

image of person holding a camera

I worked in a boutique on the east side of the island.

Whenever tourists asked me, “What else should we do on vacation?”

I always answered, “Go visit the west side, especially the beaches of Rincón.”

image of "Welcome to Rincón" sign

Since it’s far from the San Juan airport, tourists may overlook visiting the west of Puerto Rico.

And they shouldn’t.

San Juan is the capital city filled with history, but Rincón is the beach town filled with tranquility, snorkeling, surfing, sunkissed tans, and sunsets.

All you need for your vacation in paradise.

FAQ s ection

Can you walk around rincón.

There are walkable areas in Rincón, such as the town center. But overall, the best way to get around Rincón is by car.

When is the best time to go to Rincón?

October and November are the least crowded, while winter is best for surfing. Late winter and spring have the most sun, and summer is best for snorkeling.

Final thoughts

If you’re vacationing in Puerto Rico, then Rincón should be one of your stops.

Rincón has some of the most famous beaches on the island. Check out our article where we review the 30 best beaches in Puerto Rico .

The drive from San Juan might be long, but the sunsets alone make it worth it.

If you are looking for fun activities to do in Puerto Rico, I recommend you read our article about the bioluminescent bays . Puerto Rico has three bio bays, and this is a once in a life time activity that you shouldn’t miss.

Surfing Puerto Rico / Everything You Need to Know

surfing puerto rico

Surfing Puerto Rico offers up a variety of incredible waves in a stunning tropical island paradise. Commonly known as the ‘North Shore of the Caribbean,’ some surf spots in Puerto Rico pull off a good imitation of certain hollow Hawaiian barrels that grace many a surf mag.

A hop, skip, and a jump from the East Coast of the US, surfing Puerto Rico is a right of passage for many east coasters. Who wouldn’t want to escape the cold harsh winters with a trip to a tropical paradise with warm water and an abundance of good waves? Exactly.

Besides the lure of the pumping surf, Puerto Rico delivers some serious laidback friendly vibes that are downright infectious (in a good way). You can’t help but unwind, relax, and tap into the chill island way of life.

surfing Puerto Rico

In this Guide to Surfing Puerto Rico, we cover everything you need to know to plan an awesome trip in this slice of surf paradise. The guide details surf seasons, surf break info, trip costs, where to stay, things to do (besides surfing), transportation, and more, with a focus on the island’s northwest beach communities (AKA surf mecca) of Rincon, Aguada, and Aguadilla.

These surf-lined beach towns are some of the main reasons why surfers from around the globe make their way to Puerto Rico—perhaps also because of the crystal clear 80-degree water, beautiful beaches, and laidback beach life.

Surf Seasons

Summer in Puerto Rico is hot and fickle, not ideal if you’re looking to score some tasty waves and only have a week to work with. The best time to surf in Puerto Rico would be late fall, winter, and early spring. In September the Atlantic Ocean begins to come to life delivering fun-sized surf to the shorelines of northwest Puerto Rico.

Winter swells are where Puerto Rico earned its name as the North Shore of the Atlantic. This is when the surf can get big and gnarly. Treacherous barrels over shallow reefs and seriously strong currents and rip tides are more common. However, there is always the possibility of getting skunked as there can be times when the surf is nominal or flat for more than several days in a row. However, not to worry, as there is usually something to surf somewhere.

surfing puerto rico maria's

Level of Difficulty

Since Puerto Rico is mostly known for big, hollow, powerful surf and reef breaks, it is definitely more suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. Puerto Rico is also known for having strong currents and riptides, as well as a healthy supply of sea urchins.

All factors considered, having surf experience is recommended and Puerto Rico is not a great place to learn to surf. That being said, there are usually always options for beginners with proper guidance.

As with most surf destinations, when it’s big there are typically places where a less experienced surfer can have fun and get their feet wet too. Big swells come and go leaving the days before and after the peak of the swell fun-sized and manageable for the novice surfer. So know your limits and ask around if you’re not an expert.

Puerto Rico’s good surf is no secret and since it’s a very easy and desirable surf destination to travel to in the winter, it gets busy during the peak season. The crowds start to die off in March and the off-shore winds start to blow more consistently. Head-high plus surf can stick around through May and you can find yourself surfing amongst a small crowd at a break that would otherwise potentially have dozens of surfers on it.

surfing puerto rico pools

Surfing Rincón

Antonio’s .

Reef break that caters to the intermediate and experienced surfer. Spread out rights and lefts. Best in the morning as afternoon onshores can ruin it. N/NW/NE swells and southerly winds are ideal. A rippable performance wave. The rights can be long and really good when it’s working.

Sandy Beach

Caters to all levels of surfing. Sand bottom beach break with some rocky reefs in the mix. Mostly lefts with occasional sandbar rights coming through in front of Tamboo Tavern. When it’s working, the lefts can get very long and rippable. Ideal swells are from the N/NW/NE with southerly winds.

surfing puerto rico

Pool’s

Suited for intermediate to advanced surfers. Pools is a pretty shallow reef break with a few scattered right and left peaks. A juicy wave that packs a punch when it’s overhead. Fun and rippable when in the shoulder to head high range. Works best on N, NW, and NE swells and has some wind protection from the NE trades.

Caters to all levels of experience and all kinds of wave craft riders when it’s smaller.  Domes breaks over a fairly shallow rock reef.  Works best on N, NW, and NE swells with SE winds.  Mostly rights with some lefts. When bigger and doing its thing, the rights are the main attraction as they tend to be long and hollow.

surfing puerto rico domes

Maria’s

Fun for the whole family, and then some. Maria’s tends to be a very crowded spot. A long, fast, spread out right, that can connect from the main point clear on through the inside on a good swell. Best on a NW swell, with NE trades, and a lower tide.

Piston’s and Dogman’s

For the adventurous and more experienced surfer, park at Maria’s and take a walk south past the river mouth to explore these breaks which offer some fun hollow lefts and rights over shallow reef.

surfing puerto rico tres palmas

Tres Palmas

One of Puerto Rico’s famous big wave spots, this wave is only suitable for experienced big wave chargers. Doesn’t start working until it’s double overhead. Know your limits.

Surfing Aguadilla

surfing puerto rico

Caters to all levels. Located in Aguadilla central, Bridges is known for its playful glassy waves and inevitable crowds. It’s also known to be a bit polluted as a result of runoff from town. But even the filthiest lineup can’t keep a frothing surfer from a rippable sand/reef bottom right-hand point break. And that’s what you’ll find here when the swell direction is right (WNW).

Intermediate to advanced surfers. A punchy sand bottom right with hollow sections that attracts quite the bodyboarding crew.

Intermediate to advanced surfers. A fun rolling right-hand reef-bottom point that can handle large swells. Cruisy wave, good for longboarding on your average day. There’s a shorter more punchy left-hander over shallow reef to pick off here and there too.

Surfers Beach

Beginner to advanced depending on the day. Reef break. Consistent break that could be fun and easy-going when shoulder high or smaller. Gets punchier and more hollow once head high and bigger. Watch out for the urchins and the rips.

surfing puerto rico surf shop

While the surf in Puerto Rico is best suited to more intermediate and advanced surfers, it’s possible to take surf lessons, and a good surf instructor will help find a safe spot that is good for beginners. Here are a couple of resources for surfboard rentals and surf lessons.

surfing puerto rico

WEATHER:  Puerto Rico is a tropical climate, so the temperature stays around a balmy 80°F – 85°F the whole year (26°C – 29 °C). The rainy season in Puerto Rico is from April to November, but as with many tropical climates, rain showers are typically scattered in the afternoons and don’t last very long. So even if there’s rain in the forecast, there’s a good chance you can have a nice sunny morning and just a few showers later in the day.

TOURISM SEASONS: December through April is considered the high season in Puerto Rico. Many east coasters are looking to escape the frigid winter and Puerto Rico is only a cheap and short flight away.

June to September is considered the low season which coincides with their rainy hurricane season. You might be able to score a discounted rate at a hotel, but you’re not so likely to be scoring any surf in the area this time of year unless you get lucky with an out-of-season swell.

From the months of September to November and April to May are when you can really score in Puerto Rico. Sure, the surf is likely to be bigger during the peak swell season of winter, but during the shoulder season months, you can still potentially score some really fun waves with not as many people out. The downside is that you run the risk of getting skunked.

The shoulder seasons of the fall and spring in Puerto Rico are where it’s at, in my opinion. You’ll likely find fewer crowds, more human-sized surf, and a quieter small-town vibe as opposed to the bustling peak season months.

MONEY:  Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States and they use the United States Dollar (USD) as their local currency.

TIPPING:  Yes, being a United States territory and using the USD also comes along with other American customs, such as tipping. Which usually means leaving about an extra 15-20% of the total bill on sit down meals, $1 extra per drink at a bar directly to the bartender when they hand you your beverage, or a couple of extra dollars cash for taxi drivers, bellboys, people who provide room services, etc.

Getting Around

surfing puerto rico hwy 413

There aren’t a lot of options for transportation in Puerto Rico and especially not with a surfboard in tow, so renting a car is essential. It’s ideal to rent a 4-wheel drive with some clearance if you want to explore more off-the-beaten path spots like Wilderness in the Aguadilla area (which requires some off-roading through pretty deep puddles at certain times of year).

If you like the challenge of off-roading a 2-wheel drive sedan, it can be done, but not without potential consequences. We made it through some rough areas in such a car rental, but we nearly got stuck in some deep mud and might have damaged the front bumper a tad. Just a tad. Aaaanyhow, if you plan on driving down dirt things that barely resemble roads, we highly recommend going with a 4×4.

The cost of renting a car is roughly the following:

  • $15-25 per day for an economy 2-wheel drive car (for the budget-conscious adventurous type seeking the thrill of potentially getting stuck somewhere. There are some places where a 2-wheel drive car simply won’t cut it).
  • $40-65 per day for a 4-wheel drive vehicle (for the not-so-budget-concerned traveler who likes to be fully equipped and ready for any adventure that presents itself).

We suggest going the 4-wheel route if you plan to explore and like to get off the beaten path, and going with a smaller car if you know you’ll just be sticking with the more easily accessible breaks.

surf travel insurance

Of course, the last thing you want to think about is a major injury, but it would be much,  much  worse if you need serious medical attention and you’re without insurance. Unfortunately, there are just too many cases of people who didn’t think about insurance and ended up getting nailed with a huge medical bill.

You know the deal—better safe than sorry. We use and recommend  World Nomads Insurance . They offer very comprehensive travel insurance and cover all sorts of activities, including surfing and ocean sports. You can easily  check it out and get a fast quote here . Safe travels!

The Ultimate Guide to Surfing in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is a cracking surf spot, with right-hand peelers on reefs that can rival any in Southeast Asia or Central America. Rincon made it famous, but there’s also loads more…

An introduction to surfing in Puerto Rico

Two men surfing in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is the golden boy of the Caribbean when it comes to surf. An unincorporated territory of the USA, it’s long been seen as the playground for East Coasters looking to snowbird out of their eyebrow-freezing nor’easterner swells to something more worthy of the rash vest and bikinis. So here it is: Warm water all year, good, strong swell showings from the north channel, and some seriously high-quality breaks to rival even what SoCal can muster. What’s not to love?

Barrels and beach breaks abound on the northwestern coast of the isle. It’s there that legendary names like Rincon pop up, fizzing rifle-like lanes across gorgeous bays threaded with low-lying coconut palms. There’s decent surf all along that part of the island, basically until you get to the fringes of happening San Juan, the capital. Kegs are chased in big winter swells. But there are crumbly leg warmers for the beginners when the summer trades blow, too.

Cap all that off with an island that’s positively chilled to the T. Beach hotels with pools by the Caribbean Sea mingle with fish-fry shacks selling jerk and rum punches. Ah, it’s heaven. Plus, you’ve got the UNESCO history of old San Juan, one of the most historic towns in the Americas!

Surfing in Puerto Rico at a glance

The good…

  • Stunning beaches and sunsets
  • Very chilled surf vibes

The bad…

  • Not great for beginners
  • Blustery in the summer
  • Sharp reefs

What’s in this guide to surfing in Puerto Rico?

Where is puerto rico.

Puerto Rico is smack dab in the middle of the Great Antilles islands of the western Caribbean. To the west, the Dominican Republic heralds the start of the island of Hispaniola. To the east, the sailing mecca of the United States Virgin Islands takes over with its mangrove-fringed bays of pure, white sand.

Getting to Puerto Rico is made pretty darn easy by the abundance of flights that jet over from mainstay North American cities. There are tons of them in months like February and March because this is a big spring-break hub, but plenty to go around in other seasons too. They’ll most often drop you at the airport in Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) on the western side of San Juan, from where it’s about two hours’ driving to the premier surf breaks.

A guide to the Puerto Rico surf spots

Surfer in Puerto Rico

The mainstay region for surfing in Puerto Rico is the far west and the north coast of the island. Those are the places that are well-placed to get the main action in the northern swell channels come the winter. We’ll focus on those here, along with any other mainstay surf locales in this unincorporated US territory…

All hail Rincon – the de facto surf capital of the Caribbean. In just under six miles of seriously gorgeous shoreline on the far north-western tip of Puerto Rico, this little municipality manages to pack in some of the world’s very best tropical breaks. The likes of Dogman’s and Domes take care of intermediate surfers. There are more mellowed breaks at Sandy Beach and Maria’s. And then there are the beefcakes of Tres Palmas, a break that could well be called the Caribbean’s answer to Nazare. That ticks just about all levels for all surfers, only you get the lot in a truly stunning part of the island that’s laced with pristine beaches and lovely surf shacks. Sounds perfect, eh?

Aguadilla/Bridges

Aguadilla isn’t Rincon. They’re close. But we’ll stress: It IS NOT Rincon. This town of expat bars and mundane strip malls and manicured golf courses attracting Merc drivers. It actually rose out of the nearby air force base, not the surf scene. Since then, some great spots have been discovered in the region. We’ll continue to list them below, because most are actually distinct locations north of the town centre.

There is one beach within reach of the city, though: Bridges. A hotdogger’s paradise, this one usually manages lips and wedges that are fun for ripping on. Despite usually being small and having a dubious water-quality rating, it’s actually hard not to like the spot.

The best surf beach in the Aguadilla region, Crash Boat is a south-west facing opening in the shoreline jungle. It’s made unique by the presence of a huge pier right in the middle. That can sometimes channel nice NE swells into something akin to Huntington Beach – think sucky rights that froth out to the edges of the bay. It’s kind of a hard wave and very shifty. We’d recommend it to experienced surfers and tray riders.

Wilderness is a bit more like a Rincon classic up in Aguadilla. Sometimes heavy, sometimes cruisy, it flits this way and that with the ebb and flow of the strong winter swells. You should know that the reef here is VERY shallow and sharp. It’s taken many a pound of flesh in its time. On the upside, the remoteness of the spot means it’s often empty for dawnie sessions, and there’s a surrounding park with some historic ruins to see.

Surfer’s Beach

The beach that gets the moniker is probably the one that deserves it most. We’d say Surfer’s Beach is the most consistent spot in Aguadilla. That’s down to the orientation – it looks north to get the full hit of the winter N swells. The point at the eastern end of the bay actually bends the waves inwards a touch before they start breaking, too, which means the E trades can be a touch offshore. It varies here from big (when it’s a hard wave) to very small (when it’s suited to beginners). The rights are the best.

Jobos is now probably established as the go-to surf town on the northern shore of Puerto Rico. It’s closer to San Juan than both Rincon and Aguadilla, so can draw some crowds. But it’s the break that should do the talking because it’s pretty darn fantastic. Reminding us a touch of the bendy rights that cruise into Zurriola Beach in San Sebastian, the sets here hit a long headland to the north and proceed to cruise all the way into the main beachfront. They can give nice long rides of over 200m when working best. The local rippers know where to go to hoover up all the action – you’ll see them clustering by the main point. Traveling surfers are usually left to chase the run-through scraps.

Further along the north coast in the direction of San Juan, Montones is mainly reserved for kite surfers who hit the water when the summer trades start firing. It’s got some nice beaches, but is too sheltered to pick up worthwhile sets in the wintertime.

Where to stay when surfing in Puerto Rico?

Puerto Rico represents a great escape from the icy North American winters and it has for decades. You’ll notice that the palm-fringed sands of the surf bays here come backed by some excellent resorts and villas that are great for a surf adventure. Let’s take a look…

Coconut Palms Inn

If you’re after an authentic slice of vintage Puerto Rican surf culture, Coconut Palms Inn has you covered. It’s been a mainstay on the Rincon strip for some years. Zingy rooms with Cairbbean colors spill onto breezy balconies where you can watch the sunsets blaze across the Atlantic. It’s nothing fancy but therein lies the charm. Close to lots of breaks.

Cozy apartment with 8 minute walk to beach

Dodge the big crowds of Rincon and make for this cozy little bolt hole in Aguadilla. It’s very well kept and just a short stroll from the waves of Crash Boat, one of the best spots in the area. You get a fully fitted kitchen and even a small al fresco porch to chill in.

Punta Borinquen Resort

The uber-new Punta Borinquen Resort offers contemporary rooms on the hill just above Surfer’s Beach. It has an on-site restaurant serving Tex-Mex and surf-turf dishes, along with a big pool. The whole scene is pretty quiet and away from it all, but the surf is right there on the doorstep.

Step-by-step guide to planning your surfing in puerto rico trip right now

Step one: Book flights to the surfing in puerto rico…Lately, we like Omio for searching flights. It’s a nice interface and has lots of airline options. We also use Skyscanner because that sometimes offers deals that even beat going direct to the carrier!

Step two: Book your surf camp Book Surf Camps is the numero uno online booking platform for fully-fledged surf-stay packages on the internet right now. Then there’s Booking.com . That has consistently unbeatable rates for hotels and a nifty map feature that lets you check EXACTLY how close your hotel is to a surf break.

Step three: Get insurance This is kinda’ important. Not just for surf trips but for any trips. SafetyWing is great for nomad travelers. They offer rolling contracts that cover amateur surfing.

Step four (optional): Rent a car If you’re surf camping then you might not need wheels. If you’re not then we’ll just say this: We’ve never been on a surf trip that wasn’t improved by having our own car. Use RentalCars – they’re the best.

Step five: Enjoy!

For paying for stuff when you’re traveling – Get a Wise borderless card/account . They charge NOTHING for POS payments in any country and have some of the best FX rates around in our humble opinion.

When to surf in Puerto Rico?

Surfers in San Juan

Winter is the best time to surf in Puerto Rico. Strong NW-W-NE swells dominate from the depths of the upper Atlantic from around November time, sending big groundswells into the reefs of Rincon and the north-facing beaches of Aguadilla. They are the engine to the XL breaks and the big tubes that make this such a famous destination. They’re not consistent though, so you do get a variation in set size from overhead to under-knee, meaning there are good sessions for learners to be had at this time.

Summer isn’t great. Blustery E trade winds can play havoc with the whole setup of the north shore, messing it to pieces. Rincon is more immune since they are offshore then, but there’s not too much to blow on when the swells disperse.

Surfing Guide to Puerto Rico

Rincon surf Puerto Rico

Where to stay

Getting there, safety/things to know.

Puerto Rico is the Caribbean surfing capital. Especially during Fall and Winter, the power here is undeniable and quite surprising and became a reason why many Americans decide to go to Puerto Rico instead of Hawaii for their surfing holidays.

Most waves here break on reef and on a decent swell will provide some barrel action. The north and west sides of the island are most exposed to the Atlantic storms making them the best place to focus on for a successful trip.

Beginners also have many beach break options to chose from which will help them improve their surfing without getting smashed on shallow reefs.

Rincon is the main attraction in Puerto Rico being a lovely surf towns with many surf spots surrounding it and would be a great place to base yourself on a surf trip to Puerto Rico.

Rincon surf Puerto Rico Island

Although surfing is possible all year, things really start to heat up during the hurricane season in the month of August and should last all the way into Spring. Another positive aspect of Puerto Rico is the Caribbean pristine weather allowing you to leave all wet suits as well as the possibility of doing other activities on lay days.

The best place to stay on a surf trip to Puerto Rico is Rincon, a little surf town on the island’s west coast. There are a lot of surf spots in the area as well as great accommodation.

Not too far from San Juan is this beautiful and consistent surf spot offering waves for all skill levels over a forgiving reef. This place tends to get crowded so everyone must respect other surfers and locals.   Wave direction : Right and left Bottom : Reef Best tide : Any Skill level : Beginner, intermediate and advanced Optimal swell direction : N Optimal wind direction : S

One of Puerto Rico’s best surf spot. A challenging, fast and barreling wave that breaks over a few rocks. Located on the north western part of the island, Middles is breaking pretty consistently on a NE swell.   Wave direction : Right Bottom : Sand and rocks Best tide : Low to mid Skill level : Intermediate and advanced Optimal swell direction : NE Optimal wind direction : S

Tres Palmas

Rincon surf Puerto Rico

Beautiful reef break offering both lefts and rights but isn’t so consistent.   Wave direction : Right and left Bottom : Reef Best tide : High Skill level : Intermediate and advanced Optimal swell direction : NW Optimal wind direction : E

Gas Chambers

Inconsistent barreling wave that works on a large NW swell. When it is on, it is a shallow and dangerous spot to be kept for advanced surfers only   Wave direction : Right Bottom : Reef and sand Best tide : High Skill level : Advanced Optimal swell direction : NW Optimal wind direction : E

A nice point break that tends to get crowded. Works well on a NW swell and produces fun rights.   Wave direction : Right Bottom : Pebbles Best tide : Mid to high Skill level : Advanced Optimal swell direction : NW Optimal wind direction : SE

The main international airport is in San Juan, which is where most flights will land. From there, you can either stick to the north side beaches or move to the west side of Puerto Rico where Rincon is located.

-Hurricane season is from August to November. Some of them might not just bring waves but also hit the island. Heads up. -Mostly reef breaks -Localism

I'm planning a budget 4 day surf trip to Rincon, Puerto Rico in Mid/end of January peak season, warm water. I'm trying to do it for under 400 dollars including car rental, airfare, board fee, food, lodging, ect. Its definitely possible found a flight for 140 roundtrip and a cheap hostel. I live in SWFL and will be flying out of Fort Lauderdale. If I had someone to go with I could def make my budget and it would be more fun. Any takers? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" /> Has any one visited Rincon, PR? Any advice?

Rincon Surf &amp; Board used to have dorm rooms for about $15 and you can walk down to Sandys or Parking Lots from there. They're under new management though, so better give them a call to find out what's up: http://www.surfandboard.com/contact.htm. Tamboo is right on the beach and has a good bar: http://www.besidethepointe.com/. Car rental's your big expense. If you can't split the cost with someone, check for vans down to Rincon and stay close to the breaks. More surf info on Rincon here: http://www.coastalsurvey.com/category/carib/puerto-rico/ Good luck.

If you've never been to Rincon, just know that the surf there is about as consistent as it is on the east coast. Even in peak saeson, you could go for a long weekend and not see anything over knee high. I recommend getting a car, because if you get skunked in Rincon, you will still have the option to drive to the north or even the east, which both pick up more swell.

Michael Peterson status

Agreed on having the option to go north. You might want to think about staying up north a bit in Aguadilla or Isabela. Just because of swell consistency and ability to surf some better exposed breaks. I'll be down there from March 6-14, maybe a little longer. Peace, Kyle

Im flying into aguadilla. Before I was thinking about taking a van or a bus. I think your right about getting a car. I want to check out the different breaks and not just limit myself to those in walking distance. Charllies car rental seems cheap. Hopefully its pumpin in January. You should come down from NJ the water temp is prob in the low 40s haha. I heard they got quite a few reef breaks this will be a first for me. Never surfed outside of FL.

Most of the good breaks there are rock reef. If you've never surfed a reef I suggest reef booties. I always bring a pair. I've sliced my toe on the reef before and without the boots I wouldn't have been able to surf the rest of the trip.

I'll be there in a few weeks... <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wave2.gif" alt="" /> quick question; should i bring a set of reef booties/walkers? <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/shrug.gif" alt="" />

I've been three times and never had a problem barefooted. My friends and brother always seemed to find the urchins in the reef though. Worst spot I surfed there regarding the reef was dogman's. I think you can manage without them. Peace, Kyle

be careful and know your limits. a friend of mine who goes to puerto rico for 3 months every winter specifically to surf just had a run in with one of the reefs. hurt his ear and scratched up his face pretty badly. he was out surfing on a MACKIN' day and got his a$$ handed to him. luckily, he only came out with superficial scrapes and a checked ego.

swissaccountdog

My advice. Stay in Rincon but surf near Aguadilla. I was there for a week and had some really good sessions. It was always a couple feet bigger at the spots in Aguadilla. It pumped for three days then went flat, so it is a fickle place.

BTW, you don't need booties. Just make sure you line up with the key hole when paddling in at a certain spot. The only problem is that when it's big and there's a drift you will be dancing to get in. It's not that bad. Have fun.

thanks for all the advice gang! really looking forward to it. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wave2.gif" alt="" />

I'd bring booties, but that's just me. Better safe than missing out on surf or pulling urchin spines out of my feet.

had a great time in PR. beautiful weather/waves all week.(even on blown out Wednesday) have fun y'all!!!! <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wave2.gif" alt="" />

I saw the forecast and was super jealous! You scored!

nah, i stayed in Rincon(rented a duplex on the beach). i'd say rent a car(get the extra damage insurance...as wonderful as the people in PR are, they are the worst drivers I've ever experienced! although they are also very polite...go figure) bring your board(s). i didn't, and it's a lesson learned. although, there are plenty of places to rent boards from. <img src="/forum/images/graemlins/wave2.gif" alt="" />
