Wonderful Tour of Cabramatta

I am a huge fan of Taste Tours and thoroughly enjoyed a sunny Sunday with Patrick enjoying the sights, sounds and tastes of Cabramatta. Starting with the famous Vietnamese pork roll, our tour enjoyed a wonderful beef pho, sugar cane juice, Thai pastries and so much more. We made our own rice paper rolls and tried a durian smoothie. What an adventure. What I love most about Taste Tours (apart from the food) is that I get to enjoy multi-cultural suburbs with people who know and understand the area. I would never have found these places alone. Thanks again Taste Tours. Can’t wait for my next one.

Cabramatta is like a suburb of Ho Chi Minh City. So delicious, and so glad you enjoyed.

I have been to Chinatown many times and for as long as I can remember but I had never experienced it like I did last night. Patrick is very knowledgable and provided history, background and anecdotes of the sites, architecture and restaurants making the night very enjoyable. The restaurants and the dishes were carefully selected to ensure we experienced the soul of their countries of origin. The amount of food served, the variety and the pace of the tour were perfect. Finishing off with the sculptural gelatos was truly the icing on the cake. I would recommend the tour if you want to have an unpretentious, adventurous Covid-safe night out in town.

Thank you for such a lovely review, and your generous recommendation.

My partner and I loved it. Our tour guide Alaa was fantastic. It felt like we had a friend showing us around her neighbourhood. Was lovely to hear about her and her story too. The food was insane!!!!! So tasty. I was full after breakfast but still kept eating all morning. Plus did some shopping for home too. Would recommend this tour to anyone. We will be doing the Rocks one next.

Isnt the food GOOD GOOD GOOD. Thanks for joining us in the feasting!

After reading an article in the newspaper, our family of 4 (me, my husband and 2 adult daughters) were keen to do the Taste of Migration, Bankstown tour. We had a private tour for us 4 which was the same price as a group tour and we were able to nominate a day of our choice. We were met by our lovely guide Ezzy, who came to Australia a couple of years ago from Malaysia, but originally from Libya. She settled in Liverpool and has got to know all about the surrounding suburbs including Bankstown which this tour centred on. We had never been toBanktown before and we discovered many hidden gems. Bankstown, like many other Sydney suburbs is a melting pot of cultures and this tour concentrated on the cuisines of Vietnam,Lebanon and Greece. I have always believed that you get a much better picture of a suburb by doing a tour with a local, visiting different food venues and restaurants and going to specialist grocers and delis. We also learnt a bit of history of the area and visited various sculptures and monuments to the cultures that create Bankstown. Now to the food! I don't want to go into minute detail about each thing we sampled because it would be nice for others to have a surprise. But please make sure you don't eat too much beforehand! We sampled a fusion Vietnamese brunch, ate Lebanese pizza, had some fantastic Vietnamese rice paper rolls at a very popular family run restaurant. At the Greek deli we were to sample a shared deli platter but due to Covid, no sharing allowed, so we got a very generous take-home package each, which we had for dinner. We also visited a Middle Eastern deli full of aromatic spices, a Vietnamese supermarket and lastly sampled some lovely sweet things from a Lebanese bakery. Ezzy also presented us with a tote bag and spices from the deli, a lovely take home reminder of our day. summing up I can't recommend this tour highly enough, already planning to do another Taste Tour asap. Ezzy said that numbers are down on the tours due to Covid, and they would love numbers to increase. They are very aware of Covid restrictions, sanitiser is always at hand as well as places to wash your hands. Please do this tour, it is a fantastic way to get to know another part of Sydney, and to eat well too!

Thank you for such a detailed review. So much and so tasty.

This food tour was outstanding. Our guide, Parastoo was warm, friendly and knowledgeable and led us gently through a taste sensation. My friend Jane suggested I accompany her on this tour and I am so glad that I did. Now we intend to try all the other tours organised by tastetours. Highly recommended. Suzie Tobin

We cant wait to see you again Suzie. There is a world of food in Western Sydney. Thanks for the lovely review

My husband, sister and I took the Taste of Afghanistan, Syria and Persia tour last Sunday with the delightful Alaa as our guide. We seriously had the best day. Alaa was such a friendly, kind and patient guide who taught us so much about her culture and the cultural melting pot of Merrylands. We ate the most delicious food and loved exploring the grocery and spice shops in the neighbourhood. We were humbled by the experience and can’t wait to come back and eat at all the restaurants again! A massive thank you to Alaa for taking such good care of us. All the best!

Thankyou for taking this journey with us. Merrylands is a well kept secret!. Alaa is such a star, so full of knowledge, and caring. Thankyou for her for this beautiful review.

As seen when exploring the Sydney suburb of Cabramatta on a day walk.

Cabramatta: A day walk in a Sydney Suburb

As the train approaches Cabramatta I start to have doubts about this project. My challenge is to visit, photograph and document how I experience one suburb every fortnight. Cabramatta is the first.

Why Cabramatta? Well, I’ve been there before and it’s a cultural experience being Australia’s largest non-Anglo-Celtic commercial precinct. I have a vague plan – to walk around the rectangle formed by Railway Parade, John Street, Hill Street and Hughes Street. To try various local delicacies that I have read about in foodie blogs and to buy fabric for a sewing project I’ve had in my mind for far too long.

A touch of Asia in Sydney’s west

I cross Railway Parade and make my way to John Street. Suddenly I’ve been transported to Asia. Close to a third of Cabramatta’s population was born in Vietnam while others are from Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. Unsurprisingly shop signs are in Vietnamese and I hear very little English. Televisions and radios in shops are tuned to Vietnamese programs.

Cabramatta feels like Vietnam

I could be in Vietnam

Bakeries display the usual cakes but also rows of sweet treats very different from what I am used to. Mixed businesses are crammed with all sorts of foodstuffs, kitchen utensils, plastic ware. I stop at a little shop selling sugarcane juice. The shop assistant feeds sugar cane into a machine, adds ice to the juice and hands me a delicious refreshing drink.

Men sit around tables at a corner café drinking clear tea of different shades of amber in tall glasses. Some women are setting out pre-packaged meals from canvas shopping trolleys to sell to passers-by. Others display home grown bunches of lemon grass and other herbs.

Two sisters giggle as they try to tell me something about their shop being closed for the day. They still have some goods for sale on a table outside. The simple act of buying an iced coffee from them results in an interaction where much is lost in translation. I leave and we are all richer for the experience.

Pai Lau Gate to Freedom Plaza

Ahead I see the lion statues at the John St entrance to Freedom Plaza where men and women gather separately on communal benches. The large monumental Pai Lau or gateway symbolises harmony and multiculturalism and functions as a welcoming monument and as a celebration of freedom and democracy.

Cabramatta may have become a tourist destination, but today I see few Anglo faces. I notice several animal statues, all symbolising something. Lions for strength and protection, pigs for good luck and a giant turtle for longevity.

Sugarcane juice

He’s getting Sugarcane Juice

Exotic Groceries

Exotic Groceries (to me at least)

I wander along the four streets bordering the main shopping area, taking detours through indoor passages lined with jewellery stores, clothes and shoe shops, fruit vendors, butchers, fishmongers and numerous hair establishments.

In the Good Luck BBQ House, the meat is being chopped to order with a large cleaver. The Lucky Gift Shop mainly sells goods associated with good luck. Buddha’s of all shapes and sizes, red and gold wall hangings and lanterns, joss sticks and gold lucky cats beckoning wealth and prosperity with their moving arm. I start noticing that most shops have a simple Buddhist shrine with fresh offerings of fruit and drink. Or at least some decoration in red and gold.

Fabric rolls in Cabramatta

So much to choose from

Rolls of fabric propped up on the sidewalk catch my attention. I find what I am looking for and at $4 per metre leave feeling that I’ve got myself a bargain.

It is lunch time. Without local knowledge it’s difficult to choose from the many and varied local eateries. So I stay safe and choose from those written up in many food blogs. Instead Thanh Binh, where I’ve previously eaten a delicious lunch with friends, I choose Phó 54, a small, family run restaurant in Park Street. It’s well known for …well, its phó (pronounced “fer”).

There’s a queue, but a few short minutes later, I am sharing a table with a woman from Cambodia. She has little English, but manages to explain about the condiments and how to mix them with my steaming bowl of phó tái (beef noodle soup). I copy her as she puts noodles into her spoon with her chopsticks and eats from the spoon.

Fish anyone?

Cabramatta specialty butcher

Specialty Butcher

The fresh tasty broth is a perfect lunch. She bids me goodbye with a lovely smile and touch on the shoulder. Sophia takes her place. We chat a while and then out of the blue she says she is going to shout me lunch. I’m confused. Did I understand correctly? Why it is so difficult to accept generosity from strangers? Hopefully we’ll meet again when I visit her local temple in Canley Vale.

Final Thoughts on Cabramatta

I’ve had a rich cultural experience this morning. I’ve discovered new things and made a new friend. Perhaps I would have learnt a bit more on one of the many tours available   but I took my time, followed my nose and wasn’t disappointed.

You can too. Take a friend for company, a wheelie shopping bag and the train from Sydney Central. Its only about 50 minutes on the Inner West and South Line and you can make your visit to Cabramatta more meaningful by buying the ingredients to make pho at home with this easy recipe given to me by one of my readers. It takes an hour and ten minutes to prepare.

Update: Cabramatta Hasn’t Changed

Recently I returned to Cabramatta to learn more about local cuisine with Taste Tours . You can read my post on the tour here . My impression is that Cabramatta hasn’t changed since I first visited a few years ago.

Little women still shop with their shopping trolleys, others sit on milk crates selling home grown produce and children chase pigeons in the plaza. The new Dutton Plaza and covered car park has replaced an open air car park, but I didn’t venture in. The local shops and restaurants in and around the plaza are still the same family run businesses.

I’m excited to visit, thanks for making it accessible!

I hope you do.Let me know how it goes.

Great site. I would like to see and learn more.

Thanks Loretta. It’s fun to share my experiences.

This is a terrific blog, Joanne. What a good idea to discover our city one suburb at a time. You’ve inspired me.

Thank you so much. Your comments inspire me!

Jim Thanks Joanne, Great idea and your choice of Cabramatta for your first suburb was very nostalgic for me- countless visits to real estate agents looking for cheap rental units and then to the asylum seekers who moved in- and when time permitted a bowl of steaming pho in one of the many restaurants- seven years at House of Welcome just down the road. Where to next?

Nice to hear from you Jim. Petersham next, but I’m off to Auburn tomorrow. It will only be posted in a few weeks though.

“Your comment is awaiting moderation” .! oh dear moderation was never my strong suit. jc

Thanks Joanne it’s always fun to follow your adventures and proof that you don’t have to travel far afield to enjoy new experiences! Cheers Philip

Thank you. I’m having fun

Well done Joanne, look forward to your travels around Sydney

Great start, Jo. Keep them coming. So different from our neck of the woods…in fact Cabramatta reminded me of parts of Hong Kong. I loved the richness of colour. Love from la belle France Jacqui

Thanks Jacqui.

Sounds like a lot of fun Jo – especially making new friends over a bowl of Pho. You must show us your finished sewing with the material you bought at some stage.

Thanks Anne. Yes. I’ll be making ‘happy pants’, but need some time first.

Thanh Bin is my favourite. i had my 60th birthday lunch there with my family. I am in bed with a bad cold so i am reading all your blogs again. Makes me want to get out and about too. Thanks Jo x

Thanks for reading and commenting. I’ll put your suggestions on my to do list ie re the mosque in Abu Dhabi.

Hey Jo, inspired by you, Ros and I are going to Cabramatta on Tuesday afternoon. Are you busy or would you like to join us?

So glad you’re inspired. I would come but Spanish calls. Would love to hear what you think.

i was raied in cabramatta in the 60,s and 70,s and i am amazed by the change in john st let alone the whole of cabramatta it does look good but different .

Hello Lynnette, I can imagine Cabramatta is very different from when you grew up there. So many Sydney suburbs have changed dramatically and still are changing. Cabramatta may be different but it’s very interesting.

Hi Joanne Would you suggest a Sunday or Monday to visit Cabramatta? Thanks, Sally

Hi Sally, It all depends on what you want. I suspect Sunday will be busy – and that could be a good experience, but not if you’re avoiding crowds. Monday is likely to be quieter. I have only been on a Saturday and during the week so I’m really guessing. Let me know how you go. Joanne

Went to Cabramatta yesterday. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Best Pho at Pho Viet in John Street. Went by train which was so easy. Will go back again for some more Pho.

I’m pleased you enjoyed it. And the train is great. No parking hassles.

Hi Joanne Do you ever take groups on your tours? I am with a Probus Club & we do day trips around Sydney & I have enjoyed reading the information you have given about Cabramatta.

Thanks Carolyn, I’ll email you directly. Joanne

Thx for yr very interesting info. My son Kirsten (who lives and works in Sydney ) just mailed me that he’s going to visit Cambretta today. I forwarded him yr info. Thx so much. Clément Gent (Belgium)

Thanks for your note, Clement. I’m so pleased it was useful.

Fun times in Cabramatta

We did the Vietnam Tour in Cabramatta and our tour guide was Noor. Noor was excellent, and the tour was fun. The only feedback I have would be that it was probably 30-45 mins longer than it needed to be. It was nice to leave the bibble of where we live and see a suburb that I haven't been to for over 20 years and my friends had never been.

We recently did the Ramadan Night Markets tour with Sahar. It was an amazing experience and Sahar is knowledgeable, warm and welcoming. Couldn't recommend more highly!

We had such a fun night with Latifeh leading the way. We learned a lot about Ramadan and the different traditions. We ate amazing food from many different Islamic cultures - Cocos Islands, Syria, Lebanon, Malaysia, Myanmar, Arabia and so on. The atmosphere was a happy, buzzy, family one and Latifeh did a great job for us of selecting delicious food and educating us at the same time. Highly recommend!

This was a very special tour of the night markets during Ramadan, and it was fantastic. Latife, our guide, was very friendly and knowledgeable, giving us very useful contextual information about all the wonderful food we experienced. I particularly appreciated hearing about the people and culture behind the food. This is what sets Taste Tours apart. Highly recommended.

Taste of Ramadan – Lakemba Night Markets. We started at 7pm and finished just on midnight!! The tour itself runs for 2 ½ hours but we lingered afterwards to savour more of the sights & atmosphere. Taste dishes available only once a year during Ramadan after sunset. More than a million people are expected to visit Ramadan Nights Lakemba to break their daily fast and experience the cultural showmanship along Haldon Street at more than 70 food stalls. Ramadan Nights veteran and Taste tour guide Noorlindah Saleh led the way through a wonderous night feast. She was so incredibley knowledgeable, warm & welcoming. 1. Haleem at Zam Zam Restaurant & Sweets was the standout dish for me. This Bangladeshi variety at Zam Zam is sweat-inducingly spicy. It was so good we went back for another bowl after or tour despite being so full of food already! 2. Murtaba at Desi Paikari Bazar was another winner. At Ramadan Nights it’s made with paper-thin filo pastry stretched over a hot grill, stuffed with minced meat, coriander and egg, then folded, fried and chopped to serve. The Murtaba chef at Desi Paikari Bazar, Noor, reveals he learned the skill in a Malaysian refugee camp after fleeing Myanmar. 3. The once-a-year Camel burgers are surprisingly tender & some of our group even asked for seconds which I understand is perhaps a first on this tour! The camel burger by Broadster Chicken was a founding dish of the Lakemba Night Markets event. 4. Another must-order is the Ramadan Kashmiri “Barbie chai” at Mandi King. 5. And of course for a sweet treat, head to Bakdash Ice Cream who create delicious creamy Syrian ice cream, served with crushed pistachios with a theatrical show to accompany the ice cream! We went on to finish it all off with at Dhaka Delight with a Bangladeshi Guur Cha. If you have the opportunity this tour is a MUST on your list of things to do in Sydney.

I love food tours, and this one was great. We visited the Ramadan Night Food Markets in Lakemba - a first time for me, and I will definitely go back. We visited 8 different places and tried food from many different countries. If you're thinking, why would I do a tour when I can just go myself? Well, you can, but then you would miss out on the informative background information, insider knowledge about what to try, being able to try lots (lots!) of different foods (if you do it yourself, you would end up having to commit to 1 or 2 meals max), and not having to wait in any lines (and wow the lines were long for some stalls!) It was worth the $ with all the food we tried, but especially for the expertise of our wonderful guide Sahar. I highly recommend Taste Tours.
