Taylor Swift makes triumphant return to Bay Area with Eras Tour

Updated on: July 29, 2023 / 5:26 AM PDT / CBS/Bay City News Service

Taylor Swift needs no introduction, but that doesn't stop the singer from announcing "My name is Taylor and I was born in 1989" to kick off her first night of two sold-out shows at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

The singer's Eras Tour, which has been taking the nation by storm all summer, finally arrived Friday night in Santa Clara before the U.S. leg of the tour wraps up in Los Angeles.

PHOTOS:   Taylor Swift dazzles packed house at Levi's Stadium with marathon show

Eager fans started filling the stadium as soon as the gates opened at 4:30 p.m., with many fans who could not score tickets congregating outside to enjoy the music alongside other fans.

The Eras Tour is a celebration of the singer's career, spanning over 17 years and 10 studio albums. Through the night, Swift revisited her "eras" by playing songs from nine of her studio albums -- her self-titled debut album did not make the cut.

PHOTOS:   Swifties descend on Levi's Stadium for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour

Swift made her entrance with "It's been a long time coming," a lyric from her song "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince," repeating over and over. It has been a long time indeed, since the singer's last time performing in the Bay Area was in 2018 during her Reputation Stadium Tour. She played two sold-out nights at Levi's Stadium then, as well.

The singer did her best to make up for the missed time with her show, which included 45 songs and lasted well over three hours, without taking into account the two opening acts she brought alongside her -- rock band HAIM and singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams.

The first act of the show was based on the singer's 2019 record "Lover," an album she was originally scheduled to take on the road in 2020 with a summer music festival tour, which was postponed and later canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being cut short, the album's promo campaign produced multiple hit singles, including "Cruel Summer," which is currently dominating the music charts.

The crowd erupted into a loud cheer following the singer's performance of "champagne problems," a piano ballad taken from her ninth studio album "evermore." Swift appeared overwhelmed by the response, taking in the applause for a few minutes. Right before she played the song, she declared she has "no plans of stopping" her autobiographical songwriting, for which she has been adored and scrutinized, anytime soon.

The show peaked around the halfway mark, when Swift brought out her guitar to perform fan favorite "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)," a heartbreak ballad that appeared on the singer's 2021 re-release of her fourth studio album "Red." It's tough not to think this tour will go down in history books after hearing thousands of fans sing along to the entire 10-minute song in unison.

Following sets from her blockbuster albums "folklore" and "1989," Swift performed two surprise songs that she switches up for every single show of her tour. Santa Clara concertgoers were wowed by a performance of "right where you left me" with her co-writer Aaron Dessner, a member of the alternative rock band The National, and a show stopping performance of "Castles Crumbling," a song Swift released earlier this month on her "Speak Now (Taylor's Version)" album.

Swift's version of an encore consisted of seven songs from her latest album "Midnights," including hit singles "Anti-Hero" and "Karma," which made for an incredibly high-energy exit.

The production design of the show was stellar. From the visual elements displayed on the screens, to the incredible pyrotechnics that heated up the stadium in bursts of flames, there was a lot of thought put into making this show memorable for all the fans in attendance, regardless of where they were seated.

The pacing of the show allowed for Swift to take "breaks" singing ballads and acoustic songs in between more intense and choreographed dance-heavy performances. In this way, the singer was able to keep her energy levels high throughout the entirety of her three-hour set.

Swift takes the stage at Levi's Stadium again Saturday night, before heading to Los Angeles for six sold-out shows at SoFi Stadium, which will conclude the U.S. leg of the tour.

In honor of Swift's shows in the Bay Area, the Santa Clara City Council named her the ceremonial mayor of "Swiftie Clara" during the Eras Tour shows this weekend.

Starting on Oct. 13, Swifties can relive her epic summer concert run on big screens in San Francisco, the pop star announced Thursday.

On the social network formerly known as Twitter, Swift's account posted a video trailer for the upcoming Sam Wrench-directed 2-hour, 45-minute unrated movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , announcing tickets are available now.

The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon 😆 Starting Oct 13th you’ll be able to experience the concert film in theaters in North America! Tickets are on sale now at… pic.twitter.com/eKRqS8C7d1 — Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) August 31, 2023

"We're about to go on a little adventure together," Swift says in the trailer. "That adventure is going to span 17 years of music. How does that sound?"

San Francisco fans of the record-breaking pop star saw demand for tickets to this year's tour disrupt a presale event last November, while some lucky locals snagged tickets to a Downtown "rave." When Swift finally came to Levi's Stadium in July, Bay Area fans' excitement was visible (not to mention extremely lucrative and record-breaking ).

A preorder link sends would-be moviegoers to AMC Theatres , Cinemark and Regal Movies chain's websites, as well as the Fandango ticket service.

Taylor swift debuts revamped ‘eras tour’ setlist with ‘tortured poets department’ songs.

taylor swift tour san francisco

T aylor Swift has officially added her “Tortured Poets” Era to her tour setlist.

On Thursday, the superstar singer debuted a revamped setlist for in Paris, which was also the first stop on the European leg of her tour after a two-month break.

Swift performed several songs from her new album “The Tortured Poets Department,” including “But Daddy I Love Him,” “So High School,” “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?,” “Down Bad,” ”Fortnight,” “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” according to footage posted to social media from the concert.

It’s the first time Swift performed these tracks in front of a live audience since the album’s release last month. Swift told her Paris crowd that they were the first to see songs from “Tortured Poets” performed. She jokingly called the album “Female Rage: The Musical.”

The addition of her new album to the show was part of a larger restructuring of her setlist and concert, which featured brand new costumes, choreography and props throughout.

As part of the revamp, Swift cut several songs, including “The Archer,” “Long Live,” and “Tolerate It,” among others.

“The Tortured Poets Department” set streaming records and is Swift’s best-selling album, posting over two million in sales in its first week. “Tortured Poets” also became her 14th album to hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, tying Jay-Z as the second-most top-charting albums behind the Beatles.

Swift is set to play three more concerts in Paris before she heads to Stockholm, Sweden.

Taylor Swift Gave Nod To Travis Kelce During Eras Tour In Paris

T ravis Kelce was not in attendance at Taylor Swift's show in Paris Thursday night, but the pop megastar still gave a nod to her boyfriend.

Earlier tonight, as videos of the concert began circulating on X/Twitter, alert Swifties noticed that she appeared to be using the Kansas City Chiefs' "Swag Surfin'" celebration onstage during her performance of "So High School."

Swift was seen partaking in the accompanying dance for Fast Life Youngstaz 2009 hit during the Chiefs' playoff win over the Miami Dolphins back in January, so it definitely seemed like that was the inspiration for the moves.

Page Six confirmed the semi-hidden tribute to Kelce moments ago.

"A video obtained by Page Six showed Swift sitting on a staircase — appearing to represent stadium bleachers — alongside several background dancers as they synchronously swayed side to side and moved their hands like waves," Page Six wrote. "While bouncing, Swift sang, 'It’s true, scouts honor / You knew what you wanted, and boy you got her.'"

"So High School," which is part of Swift's new album, The Tortured Poets Department , is said to be inspired by Kelce.

Another track on the album, "The Alchemy," also mentions football and winning streaks, so people have linked it to Kelce as well.

Kelce is expected to make his way over to Europe soon to link up with Swift on the Eras Tour. While he didn't make it in time for Thursday's show, he did leave an encouraging message for her on Instagram.

After Swift wraps up four shows in Paris this weekend, she'll head to Sweden next week.

Minnesota's Taylor Swift bill protects online live-event ticket sales

The new law will require ticket sellers to disclose all fees up front.

AP logo

People buying tickets online for concerts, sporting events and other live events in Minnesota will be guaranteed more transparency and protection under a so-called Taylor Swift bill signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Tim Walz.

The law, prompted by the frustration a legislator felt at not being able to buy tickets to Swift 's 2023 concert in Minneapolis, will require ticket sellers to disclose all fees up front and prohibit resellers from selling more than one copy of a ticket, among other measures. The law will apply to tickets purchased in Minnesota or other states for concerts or other live events held in Minnesota.

Walz signed House File 1989 - a reference to Swift's birth year and an album with that title - at First Avenue, a popular concert venue in downtown Minneapolis.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that we would be at a bill signing for House File 1989 at First Avenue," Democratic Rep. Kelly Moller, chief author of the bill, said.

RELATED: Taylor Swift fans sue Ticketmaster after messy tour ticket sale

Moller was among thousands of people who became stuck in ticket sales company Ticketmaster's system after it crashed in 2022 amid the huge demand for Swift concert tickets and attacks from bots, which tried to buy tickets for resale at inflated prices. The situation led to congressional hearings but no federal legislation.

Supporters of Minnesota's new law say the state joins Maryland as among the few states to pass protections for ticket buyers into law.

Ticketmaster did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new Minnesota law. Taylor Swift's media team also did not respond.

Jessica Roey, a spokesperson for StubHub, said in an email, "StubHub has long advocated for legislation that protects fans from anti-competitive and anti-consumer practices in the ticket-buying process. We share the goals of HF1989 and look forward to continuing discussions with policymakers to advance policies that provide more transparency, more control, and more choice for ticket buyers."

Walz, a Democrat, said the new law is "protection so you don't get a bad ticket, a fraudulent ticket, and resellers can't snatch them all up before you get an opportunity."

Two young girls - one wearing a shirt that said "A LOT going on at the moment" in a nod to Swift, and another wearing a shirt that said "Iowa 22" in reference to basketball star Caitlin Clark - attended the bill signing with their dad, Mike Dean, who testified in support of the bill this year.

Dean said his daughter "came to me in December and said, 'Dad, I want to go to see Caitlin Clark.' As a father, I just couldn't resist. And so I went online to go buy tickets."

RELATED: Head of Live Nation faces Senate about Taylor Swift ticket fiasco/

The tickets were supposed to cost $300 total, Dean said, but they ended up costing over $500 because of hidden fees. The timer had begun in the online checkout process, so he had just minutes to decide whether to buy the tickets or lose them.

He ultimately bought the tickets. But Dean said these practices mean customers can't make informed decisions. The new law, he said, will bring transparency to the process.

The law takes effect on Jan. 1, 2025, and applies to tickets sold on or after that date.

Adrianna Korich, director of ticketing at First Avenue, said she supports the new rules, saying fans are sometimes tricked into paying up to 10 times a ticket's face value because of deceptive websites and resellers who list tickets without actually possessing them. The new law bans both, she said.

"We have all heard the horror stories from the Taylor Swift Eras tour and have seen the astronomical prices that are being charged at checkout," Korich said.

At a Taylor Swift Concert? Time to Propose.

At the Eras tour, love takes center stage as couples orchestrate their own declarations of commitment against the backdrop of the star’s grand performances.

A diptych shot shows a marriage proposal in the crowd at a Taylor Swift concert, on the left, and a close-up photo of the couple displaying an engagement ring., on the right.

By Madison Malone Kircher

Madison Malone Kircher witnessed a proposal on Night 6 of the Eras Tour in Los Angeles. It made her cry just a little bit.

The twangy guitar picking begins and the crowd cheers. It’s time for “Love Story,” the ninth song on Taylor Swift’s Eras tour set list. Onstage, Ms. Swift strums her guitar and sings a modified Romeo and Juliet story, one with a happy ending that closes with Romeo on bended knee and Juliet picking out a wedding dress.

It’s a Swift classic that has taken on a new and literal meaning during the Eras tour, where some fans have used the musical moment to underscore their own love stories with meticulously planned marriage proposals right there in the stadium while Ms. Swift performs.

Megan Voo and Justin Chong are two such fans. The couple, who live in Melbourne, Australia, and met as architecture students at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2017, got engaged during one of Ms. Swift’s shows in their hometown earlier this year.

Ms. Voo, 26, was in complete shock when Mr. Chong, also 26, popped the question in February, mostly because she had no idea he was even at the concert in the first place. Ms. Voo attended with her sister, but, unbeknown to her, Mr. Chong had purchased a nearby seat to surprise her. (Ms. Voo’s sister was also in on the plan.)

Mr. Chong got to the concert early and made the people seated around him aware of his plan. They helped form a human shield to keep him hidden from Ms. Voo. When the moment came, they kindly stepped out of the way so he could make his way to Ms. Voo’s seat.

“When I dropped down and said, ‘Will you marry me?’ the first thing she said was ‘how did you get a ticket?,’” Mr. Chong said. He wore a ruffled shirt as a nod to the outfit Romeo wears in the “Love Story” music video and proposed with a ring from his mother.

And while the couple didn’t capture Ms. Swift’s attention, a number of nearby attendees filmed the proposal and several shared it on social media where it quickly went viral . “My friend congratulated us, saying ‘I saw your video.’ We hadn’t even announced! This was maybe two hours after the concert,” Ms. Voo said.

After the proposal, Mr. Chong didn’t return to his original seat. “I did ask everyone else. I said, ‘is it OK if I stay here with my fiancée?’” Everyone was standing for most of the show anyway, he added.

Brittany Litzenberger, 27, had a slight suspicion her boyfriend of nearly two years, Sloan Thomas, might propose at the Eras tour. While making friendship bracelets — Swifties trade them during shows — at a party at a friend’s apartment before the concert, she saw Mr. Thomas sneakily hand one off to her best friend who would be attending the show with them.

“He had sent me a few videos of people getting engaged at Eras and I was like, ‘oh, that’s so sweet. That would be like my dream,’” Ms. Litzenberger, a behavioral technician who lives in Kansas City, Mo, said.

Last July at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Ms. Litzenberger wore a purple sequined dress, which turned out to be the perfect outfit for what was about to happen.

@sloanthomas I asked my amazing girlfriend to marry me this weekend @Taylor Swift concert in kc #erastour #taylorswift #enchanted #erastourtaylorswift #speaknowtaylorsversion ♬ original sound - Sloan Thomas

“Love Story” came and went without Mr. Thomas proposing. But a few songs later, during Ms. Swift’s “Speak Now” set, the proposal happened . Ms. Swift took the stage in a purple dress and began to play “Enchanted,” a love song about meeting someone for the very first time. Around the first chorus, Mr. Thomas tapped Ms. Litzenberger on the shoulder and handed her the mysterious friendship bracelet.

Mr. Thomas’ song choice was particularly meaningful, Ms. Litzenberger said. “After our first date, I got in my car and plugged in my Spotify and shuffled my Taylor and ‘Enchanted’ played,” she said.

“The friendship bracelet that he gave me said, ‘marry me,’” Ms. Litzenberger said. “Then I turn around and he’s down. He got a purple ring box. She was singing in the background, the chorus, which was just perfect timing. Everybody around me is screaming. I’m crying.”

She had a hard time focusing on the next few songs, she said. “But in a good way, you know, it made everything really exciting.” (Ms. Litzenberger’s friend who hosted the bracelet making party also got engaged during the concert.)

Carmen Castillo also said she could not remember the song that played after her now-fiancé, Vernon Chamorro, proposed during “Love Story.”

@car_swiftness13 💍🫶🏼I got my love story moment at my first Taylor Swift concert. I almost died in the process….too many emotions. Her right there, him on one knee❤️ @Taylor Swift @Taylor Nation #tstheerastourtampa #tstheerastour #fyp #tampa #proposals #taylorswift ♬ original sound - Carmen’s Version 🦋🪩🌌

“He later told me he was afraid to propose at the Eras tour because he was afraid I was going to die of a heart attack because of all the emotions and excitement,” she said. The couple, who live in Barcelona, Spain, traveled to Tampa, Fla., in April 2023 to see Ms. Swift perform.

Ms. Castillo and Mr. Chamorro, who have been together for six years, have set a wedding date for Dec. 14 in Ms. Castillo’s home country of Nicaragua.

“I wanted it to be the 13, but that’s a Friday,” Ms. Castillo said, referencing Taylor Swift’s birthday.

Drinks are prepared in the Black Dog pub, thought to be mentioned in a Taylor Swift song, in London, Saturday, May 4, 2024. As Taylor Swift prepares to launch the Europe leg of her blockbuster Eras tour, thousands of her fans from the U.S. and Canada are following her across the pond. Some Swifties decided to see Swift in one of the 18 cities on the pop star’s tour after noticing that tighter restrictions on ticket fees and scalping in Europe made seeing Miss Americana perform abroad less of a splurge. LONDON (AP) — Thousands of ride-or-die Taylor Swift fans who missed out on her U.S. concert tour last year or didn’t want to buy exorbitantly priced tickets to see her again found an out-of-the-way solution: Fly to Europe.

A concert might sound like an odd raison d’etre for visiting a foreign country, especially when fans can watch the Eras Tour from home via the documentary now streaming on Disney+. Yet online travel company Expedia says continent-hopping by Swift’s devotees is part of a larger trend it dubbed “tour tourism” while observing a pattern that emerged during Beyoncé’s Renaissance world tour.

Some North American fans who plan to fly overseas for the Eras Tour said they justified the expense after noticing that tighter restrictions on ticket fees and resales in Europe made seeing Swift perform abroad no more costly — and potentially cheaper — than catching her closer to home.

“They said, ‘Wait a minute, I can either spend $1,500 to go see my favorite artist in Miami, or I can take that $1,500 and buy a concert ticket, a round-trip plane ticket, and three nights in a hotel room,’” said Melanie Fish, an Expedia spokesperson and travel expert.

That was the experience of Jennifer Warren, 43, who lives in St. Catharines, a city in the Niagara region of Ontario. She and her 11-year-old son love Swift but had no luck scoring what she considered as decently priced tickets in the U.S. Undeterred, Warren and her husband decided to plan a European vacation around wherever she managed to get seats. It turned out to be Hamburg, Germany.

“You get out, you get to see the world, and you get to see your favorite artist or performer at the same time, so there are a lot of wins to it,” said Warren, who works as the director of research and innovation for a mutual insurance company.

The three VIP tickets she secured close to the stage — “I would call it brute-force dumb luck” — cost 600 euros ($646) each. Swift subsequently announced six November tour dates in Toronto, within driving distance of Warren’s home. “Absolute nose-bleed seats” already are going for 3,000 Canadian dollars ($2,194) on secondary resale sites like Viagogo, Warren said.

TOUR TOURISM: IS IT REALLY A THING?

Travel and entertainment analysts have spoken of a pent-up consumer demand for “experiences” over material objects since the coronavirus pandemic. Some think the willingness of music lovers to broaden their fandom horizons is part of the same mass cultural correction.

“It does seem like it’s more than a structural shift, maybe a personality transformation we all went through,” said Natalia Lechmanova, the chief Europe economist for the Mastercard Economics Institute.

As Swift hopscotches across Europe, Lechmanova expects restaurants and hotels to see the same boost that Mastercard observed within a 2½-mile radius of concert venues in the U.S. cities she visited in 2023. The U.S. dollar’s strong value against the euro may also increase retail spending on apparel, memorabilia, beauty products and supplies for the friendship bracelets fans exchange as part of the Eras Tour experience, the economist said.

Former college roommates Lizzy Hale, 34, who lives in Los Angeles, and Mitch Goulding, 33, who lives in Austin, Texas, already had tickets to see the Eras Tour in L.A. last summer when they decided to try to get ones for Paris, London or Edinburgh, Scotland. They saw a Europe concert trip as a makeup for travel plans they had in May 2020 to celebrate Goulding’s birthday but had to cancel due to the pandemic.

Goulding managed to secure VIP tickets for one of Swift’s three Stockholm shows. He, Hale and two other friends scheduled a 10-day trip that also includes time in Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

“As people who enjoy traveling and enjoy music, if you can find an opportunity to combine the two, it’s really special,” Hale said.

FOR STOCKHOLM, 120,000 SWIFTIES CAN’T BE WRONG

In Stockholm, 120,000 out-of-towners from 130 countries — among them 10,000 from the U.S. — are expected to swarm Sweden’s capital this month, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Chief Economist Carl Bergqvist said. Stockholm is the only Scandinavian city on Swift’s tour, and airlines added extra flights from nearby Denmark, Finland and Norway to bring people to the May 17-19 shows, he said.

The city’s 40,000 hotel rooms are sold out even though prices skyrocketed for the tour dates, Bergqvist said. Concert visitors are expected to pump around 500 million Swedish kroner, or over $46 million, into the local economy over the course of their stays, an estimate that does not include what they paid for Swift tickets or to get to Sweden, he said.

Houston resident Caroline Matlock, 29, is making friendship bracelets and trying to learn a few words of Swedish as she prepares to see the 3½-hour show in Stockholm. Also on the itinerary: visiting the Scandinavian cities of Oslo and Gothenburg.

The concert is the last night of the trip and Matlock looks forward to interacting with Swifties from other countries: “Americans tend to have a very obsessive culture, especially Taylor Swift-related, so I’m curious if the crowd will be more toned-down.”

WILL TOUR TOURISM ENDURE AFTER ERAS?

It remains to be seen if the music tourism trend has legs as long and strong as Swift’s and Beyoncé’s, and if it will carry over to Billie Eilish, Usher and other artists with world tours scheduled next year. Expedia’s Fish thinks other big-name artists in Europe this summer will prove that booking a foreign trip around a concert is catching on.

Kat Morga, a travel consultant based in Nashville, isn’t so sure. Morga saw Swift perform in Nashville last year and helped two clients with school-aged children book European family vacations this summer that include seeing Swift in concert. But she thinks the difficulty of navigating ticket purchases through language barriers, currency conversions, international banking regulations and the risk of cancellations will limit the appeal of regular gig getaways.

“I think this is an anomaly,” Morga said. “People aren’t typically going to build their $20,000 huge family vacation only because Taylor Swift is there. She’s the one-off. She’s special.”

Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, whose company operates Booking.com, priceline.com, agoda.com, Kayak and OpenTable, is even less enthusiastic about concert tours as a tourism instigator. The Swift Effect causes a “little blip” when the superstar goes to smaller destinations, but for the worldwide travel industry, “one star touring around does not make a difference,” he said.

AP journalists Colleen Barry in Milan, Chisato Tanaka in Stockholm, Anne D’Innocenzio in New York, David Koenig in Dallas, Thomas Adamson in Paris and Brian Melley in London contributed reporting.
