Tivua Island is our exclusive atoll surrounded by a circle of white sandy beach and 500 acres of coral gardens. Here visitors will enjoy an unforgettable day in paradise, with a big range of activities to choose from and something for absolutely everyone. For those seeking water based activities, there’s snorkelling, stand up paddleboarding, kayaking and glass bottom boat tours. For those wanting a taste of Fijian culture, there’s the opportunity to take a medicine nature walk, learn to husk and weave coconut fibres and partake in a traditional Kava ceremony.

For those wanting to explore the area’s natural beauty, we offer seasonal bird and turtle viewing, the chance to snorkel and dive amongst some marvellous sea life and huge gardens of flowering tropical Hibiscus to explore. You may even see our baby black tipped reef sharks.There’s something for kids of all ages too, with a Captain’s Kids Club and a bunch of great sporting activities including beach volleyball, sandcastle building and a treasure hunt for the adventurous ones. Where is Tivua Island?

Just 90 minutes cruising time from Port Denarau Marina, Tivua Island is a tiny gem in the Pacific and is Captain Cook Cruises’ very own private piece of the Mamanuca island group. This is an archipelago of 20 volcanic islands totalling around 135 square kilometres in the western part of Fiji. Tivua Island is ringed by a white sandy beach and surrounded by 500 acres of spectacular coral gardens, making it a snorkelling and diving paradise for visitors. The island also offers a variety of other activities including stand up paddleboarding, kayaking and glass bottom boat tours, scenic walks and seasonal bird and turtle viewing.

What is included in the optional extras?

Optional extras available for an additional cost on our Tivua Island Day Cruise include scuba diving for all levels provided by professional PADI instructors, with the chance to learn to dive stunning coral reefs and, for advanced experienced divers, even explore a shipwreck. Optional massage services are offered by the Senakai Day Spa on the island and we also have two waterfront bures with ensuite available for day hire during your visit. Other options include our Tivua Island Proposal Package, complete with lunch in a private bure, our Wedding Package including ceremony, meals, activities and photography and our Day and Dinner Cruise Combo offering both day and dinner cruise with a 25% discount on one

How many passengers are onboard day cruises and are they suitable for kids?

Tivua Island day cruises have a maximum capacity of 100 passengers to a vessel and the island has a capacity of 200 guests. All ages are welcome on our day cruise and dinner cruise. Children must have adult supervision at all times and they must be capable of swimming by themselves unassisted. Children under 5 years of age are also welcome on our day cruises, but parents will need to provide their flotation devices. We offer a Captain’s Kids Club on the Tivua Island Day Cruise for children between 5 and 12 years old.

What is included in a day cruise?

Our Tivua Island Day Cruise offers our guests a huge variety of activities included in the cost. These include marine biologist guided snorkelling tours off the beach and pontoon and glass bottom boat tours, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, beach volleyball, seasonal bird and turtle viewing and a range of Fijian cultural experiences including a traditional Kava ceremony. Both our day cruise and dinner cruise also include a buffet meal made with fresh local ingredients. Optional extras for an additional cost on our day cruise include beach massages by the Senakai Day Spa on the island and scuba diving for all experience levels under the guidance of professional PADI instructors.

What are the key differences between a day cruise and a dinner cruise?

Our Tivua Island Day Cruise and Fiji Sunset Dinner Cruise are literally as different as day and night. While our day cruise is all about water based activities and family fun in the sun, our dinner cruise is a time to unwind and enjoy a fresh, tropical buffet dinner and a glass of sparkling against the backdrop of a stunning Fijian sunset. While both cruises include traditional Fijian hospitality and a sumptuous meal made with fresh local ingredients, the Tivua Island Day Cruise is more kid-friendly, with a Captain’s Kids Club and lots of activities to keep them active and occupied. Perhaps to enjoy the best of both worlds, the answer is to go on both cruises.

I have just done the 7 night Southern Lau & Kadavu trip. Unfortunately, I feel the Zodiac crew have not been trained sufficiently. Most of our snorkel trips were done during low tide, in choppy seas and the propellors damaged lots of reef. I did not feel safe with the Zodiacs due to crew shortages and not enough ladders to get back on the Zodiacs. The outboards were still running when they asked us to get in the water! There were a few times when the crew were unaware of where their guests were snorkelling! We were even dropped off in a spot where we could stand on sand and were surrounded by bits of bleached coral. Nothing to see here! When I pointed out these issues, I was told it was an inaugural cruise. This does not excuse bad boatmanship! The cruise did not go to the 3 places I specifically booked the cruise for - Vuaqava, Kabara and Bird Island. No explanation given. The ship fumigated my wooden bowl and left major stains on the bowl - I had bought it for a wedding gift. On the plus side, the ship interior is beautiful and the food outstanding! I try to promote Fiji tourism but CCC needs to provide a lot more training to their boat crew. Passenger safety and preserving the marine environment should be top priority! Order a Bombay and tonic and we aren’t even out of the port and got the last one and no more. The selection of drinks was very much limited. And it’s a cash bar with no selection. The food was very poor and beef curry you couldn’t even eat. All local food but go to local restaurant cause this is not good and selection is like over cooked left overs in restaurant pans. When I did this before they had a great selection of items a lobster tails steak cuts and great selection but now lobster is an extra with an extra charge. Not impressed with the offerings on this cruise at all. Really has gone down and this includes the food. It’s not a dinner cruise so don’t plan on enjoying the offerings. The boat it self needs some serous TLC. The staff are great and I feel for them to be on the front line of this troubled company. If this is a taste of the company lord help me for any one booking a cruise for 3 or more nights. Unless you don’t want to eat. The crew was extremely friendly and gave us a warm Bula as we boarded. Morning tea with biscuits. Nice ride out to the tropical island. We ordered optional massages on the beach. Very good price and a quality massage. Lunch was very good. Assorted salad, meat and fish. Snorkel equipment is included in price. Saw some nice reefs. We were at front of the queue waiting and waiting. We were eventually told they were waiting on paperwork from Paris. I think the paperwork must have been on a very slow boat via Australia. We were told by another person that they had come down to the marina the previous Saturday and also Monday, the previous day, to be told that yes the boat would definitely be sailing on Tuesday 12th. . Like the majority of the waiting people, we had not received any email. To date, we have still not received that email nor the email regarding the full refund that we had requested. There was not enough staff to assist all the unhappy travellers and the staff did not know how to contact Virgin Airlines. A staff member did call the hotel that we had stayed at the previous night, firstly told nothing available, but when I spoke to them and told them we had stayed the previous night, yes they had a room available. I asked if Captain Cook Cruises would pay for our taxi fare to return to the hotel and was told no. Further discussions and the staff did organise a bus to drop people off at various hotels. Management left the staff to deal with some very unhappy travellers. Don't book with Captain Cook. There are other companies doing similar cruises. A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT. If you are looking for paradise in Fiji , look no further than Tivua Island ! This private island is located a short boat ride from Nadi , one of Fiji’s main tourist hubs, making it incredibly accessible for visitors looking to escape to a tropical haven. 

The white sand and clear, turquoise waters of Tivua Island make it a great place for water activities and relaxing. In this guide, we will review the day cruise to Tivua Island with Captain Cook Cruise Excursions .

Where is Tivua Island?

Tivua Island  is located off the western coast of Viti Levu , the main island in Fiji . It is about 25 kilometers from the mainland.

How to Get to Tivua Island

Tivua Island is only accessible via boat. It is also a private island , and you must book a tour with Captain Cook Cruise Excursions to get there. 

Getting to Port Denarau

After you book your tickets online , you will need to go to the Port Denarau Marina . Port Denarau is located near Nadi , and can be easily accessed via taxi.

You can arrange for Captain Cook Excursions to pick you up and drop you off to your hotel. If you are staying in Nadi , this service is free. If you are further away, you will have to pay a small amount.

From the Marina

At the Marina, you will check into the Captain Cook Excursions reception, and wait for your boat to be ready. There are plenty of places to eat while you wait. You can also check out the other businesses nearby and see what other tours you would like to do.

The Boat Experience

During the 90-minute boat ride , you will be treated to a small snack, and you will have the option of buying drinks at the bar. You can also walk around the boat and interact with the crew and other passengers.

But the most interesting thing for me was participating in the Kava ceremony .

What is Kava?

Kava is a plant-based drink that originated in islands in the South Pacific , such as Fiji , Tonga , and Samoa . The kava plant is ground into a powder and mixed with hibiscus to create a drink that looks and tastes like muddy water .

The appeal of Kava is the relaxed feeling that the user experiences. This, combined with the lack of intoxication or confusion that can be caused by alcoholic drinks, have made Kava an important drink in the region.

Kava Ceremony

On the way to Tivua Island , the crew conduct a Kava ceremony. 3 men sit on the floor and prepare the Kava . Once it is ready to be drunk, they invite passengers to join them on the floor.

There is a certain ritual that must be followed, which includes drinking out of a coconut shell and clapping your hands 3 times after finishing.

Arrival to Tivua Island

Once you get to Tivua Island , there’s plenty of activities to choose from. Around 1 PM, there is a lunch that consists of seafood and traditional Fijian food. But besides that, you are free to explore the island for the 4-5 hours that you are there.

Most people on the tour decided to go snorkeling upon reaching the island. Captain Cook Excursions provides masks, fins, and a snorkel free of charge. 

The water around Tivua Island is very clear and full of marine life! As you swim along the coral reef, you will see all kinds of fish , starfish , and even sea cucumbers ! 

Scuba Diving

If you are Scuba certified, you will also have the option of adding this activity to your program. During my dive, I was able to see eels , sharks , and a stingray ! There are also lots of small fish that hang out in the coral that will nibble on your outstretched fingers. You will also be able to check out a couple of boat wrecks at about 10 meters deep .

Glass Bottom Boat Ride

For those who do not want to get in the water, there is also the option of taking a ride in a glass bottom boat . As the name suggests, this boat has a transparent floor that allows you to see underwater . The clarity of the water and the shallow depths can give you pretty impressive views of life under the water, all while staying dry!

Activities on the island

There is also plenty to do on the island. There is a volleyball net where you can play with other travelers or the local staff. If you want to relax, you can book a massage as well. There is a turtle nesting site you can visit, and I saw some guys getting good footage of the island with their drone.

If you just want to lie by the beach, there are plenty of beach chairs and shade available as well.

Where to Stay in Nadi

The price and availability of hotels can vary dramatically depending on the time of year. Therefore, it’s best to book your hotel in advance .

For budget travelers who want their own room, I recommend checking out the Ideal Bed and Breakfast near Wailoaloa Beach . This is very close to Port Denarau which makes it very convenient for a day cruise to the islands.

I also suggest checking AirBnB because it is possible to find some inexpensive places to stay there.

Best Time to Visit Tivua Island

There isn’t a bad time of year to visit Tivua Island . However, the rainy season runs from November to April . This is also the cyclone season, so there is a possibility of bad weather. 

If you go in May or October , you will be able to enjoy the dry season without having to deal with large crowds. This is probably the best time to go.
