No trip to Mexico would be complete without sampling the country’s famous spirits. You’ve got a few options for Puerto Vallarta tequila tours, where you’ll also get to try mezcal and racilla.

Not sure what the difference is between the three? No worries; at the end of this post, you can read more about this. But the best way to learn is in person on one of these Tequila tours in Puerto Vallarta.

Don’t have time to read this? This 5-star rated tour is the best option for tequila tasting in Puerto Vallarta.

Top Tequila Tours in Puerto Vallarta

While choosing your own adventure is possible (check our post about the best bars in Puerto Vallarta ), it’s more fun with a group and a knowledgeable local guide.

We’ve done plenty of, let’s call it “research,” and these are the best options for Puerto Vallarta tequila tours.

Tequila tours in Puerto Vallarta

1. Connoisseur Tequila Tasting

tequila tour in puerto vallarta

Life is better with options, and you’ve got three of them on this tour . You can choose between the introduction, connoisseur, or mezcal option. My personal recommendation is the latter, as it’s fun to try both of the agave spirits.

What a cool experience. The tasting room is in an up-and-coming neighborhood, Versailles, tucked among a bunch of great restaurants, but the true highlight here is the tequila and the instruction about it. Tequila has a fascinating story, more akin to wine than many spirits and it was absolutely worth learning about (and enjoying)! – Review by Justin ( read more reviews )

This tour takes place in Versalles , which is one of the top neighborhoods in PV.

It’s a foodie haven as well, so you might as well grab a bite to eat while you’re there. Some of my favorite spots include Lamara for ceviche, Budaixi for dumplings and noodles, and El Tío Toño for birria.

2. Vallarta Botanical Garden and Tequila Tasting

Puerto Vallarta Botanical Garden

This highly-rated tour takes you to the lovely Vallarta Botanical Garden first. It recently won the American Public Gardens Association’s 2022 Garden of Excellence Award, and deservedly so. This is one of our favorite places to visit in PV, and it should definitely be on your itinerary.

After touring the garden, you’ll get to head to Rancho Los Veranos to learn all about the process of making tequila as you sample the famous spirit. It’s also possible to order lunch here, but just be aware that it is not included in the tour. Either way, I’d advise eating a big breakfast before going on this tour.

We had a wonderful experience on this tour! The tour guide was authentic and professional. The history shared was so informative and full of pride. The Garden was magical and mystical. The tequila tasting was so fun and the prices for the bottles to buy were half the price of some of the local liquor stores down town!! My husband and I are tequila enthusiasts so we really appreciated the quality of the tequila!! Highly recommended!! – Kenneth ( see more reviews here) .

3. Noble Corazon

Puerto Vallarta tequila tasting

Of all the Puerto Vallarta tastings out there, this has to be my fave. And it’s not just because my picture is all over their website. We were not just hamming it up for the camera when we were there – it really was an awesome experience.

You can book their classic tequila tasting at Casa Agavera Vallarta in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood. Their experts will teach you about the distilling process as you sip on their excellent tequila, mezcal, and racilla.

It’s also possible to book a private tour at your place. If you have an Airbnb with a group, this should definitely be added to your PV itinerary.

4. City Tour with Tequila and Coffee Tasting

Tacos & tequila

This tour checks a lot of the boxes for top things to do in Puerto Vallarta. You’ll get to stroll the famous Malecon, see the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, visit a Tequila distillery, and check out a local coffee factory.

There’s also an option to add lunch for this tour. It seems like the food is more expensive if you order it while on the tour, so you may want to add it in advance.

The tour was really fun. Went with my wife and we really enjoyed ourselves. Especially at the tequila tasting. The guide was really nice, knowledgeable and really helped in making sure the entire group had a good time. Doesn’t matter what age you are, because by the end of the tequila tasting you’ll be having a good time. I highly recommend that people book this activity when coming to Puerto Vallarta. – GetYourGuide (read more reviews here).

Tours that visit Tequila (the town)

Most of these tours happen in and around PV, but it’s also possible to travel to the town of Tequila itself. That’s right – there’s an actual town called Tequila! It’s in the state of Jalisco, and it’s the birthplace of the famous spirit.

5. Toriles and Tequila Day Trip

agave fields of tequila

Make sure you rest up before this Tequila tour , as it’s a big one. This 12-hour excursion takes you to Aztec ruins in the town of Toriles as well as the birthplace of tequila itself.

Walk through the agave fields and visit a distillery as you learn all about the process of making tequila. The tour also includes a hearty breakfast, so you’ll be nice and full before the tequila tasting.

It’s a long drive, but the town of Tequila was all I expected. Wish we could have stayed longer, but soaked in all we could. Thank you Thomas! – Thomas ( read more reviews here)

Tequila is about a four-hour drive from Puerto Vallarta, so it does make for a long day if you’re doing it round-trip. If you want to visit Tequila and have the time, I recommend planning a weekend trip to Guadalajara and visiting Tequila from there, as it’s much closer.

Different Types of Mexican Liquor

Tequila and mezcal both come from the agave plant. The difference is that tequila can only be made from blue agave , while mezcal can be made from many types of agave.

Basically, tequila is a type of mezcal, just like bourbon is a type of whiskey. While they are both made from agave, they taste quite different. Many describe mezcal as having a smokey taste. Since it can be made from many agave types, the taste can vary quite a bit.

There are different types of tequila and mezcal based on how long they are aged. For tequila, these are blanco (0-2 months), reposado (2-12 months), and añejo (1-3 years).

Meanwhile, for mezcal, you have joven (0-2 months), reposado (2-12 months), and añejo (at least one year).

Mezcal in Puerto Vallarta

They all have different colors and tastes, so you may want to try them all to find out which type you prefer. That’s where these awesome Puerto Vallarta tequila tours come in handy!

But how about that other Mexican spirit? You might have never heard of racilla, but it’s an important part of the local culture here in Puerto Vallarta. That’s because it is only made right here in the state of Jalisco.

Racilla is also made from the agave plant, but the process differs. This results in a unique taste that’s nothing like tequila or mezcal. It’s still somewhat of an underground phenomenon, and it’s possible to buy bootleg racilla from unmarked plastic bottles.

If you’re not into that, never fear – you can sample it on some of these tequila tours.

That does it for this rundown of the best Puerto Vallarta tequila tours.

Whatever option you choose, remember to pace yourself. Do you know that saying “one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor?” It exists for a reason. Be sure to stay hydrated and don’t drink on an empty stomach.

We learned that lesson the hard way and always order some food when we imbibe in tequila, so learn from our past mistakes and eat some tacos!

When visiting Mexico, it’s almost a must to do some tequila tastings! Going on a tequila tour is a great way to get to taste multiple different tequilas, however, many Puerto Vallarta tequila tours are a tourist traps.

We researched up and down for a Puerto Vallarta tequila tour that offered not just unique tequila tastings , but one that also taught us how tequila is made.

When we found Finca 18 , a newer distillery in Puerto Vallarta, we learned they make tequila in the traditional way, they explain the entire distilling process, and the tequila tour ends with a tequila tasting . We knew we needed to visit!

Four Finca 18 tequila bottles set out for a Tequila tasting in Puerto Vallarta.

Highlights Of This Puerto Vallarta Tequila Tour + Tasting

  • Five different tequila tastings
  • Optional chocolate pairing with the tequila tasting
  • Tequila tour at the actual distillery
  • Tour done by a certified agave spirits master, one of 20 worldwide in perfect English
  • Beautiful grounds

Getting To The Puerto Vallarta Tequila Tasting

Finca 18 is located 18 km outside of Puerto Vallarta. Although it may seem like the name of the tequila distillery comes from the 18km distance, it actually comes from the number of speedbumps you hit coming from Puerto Vallarta. It takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to Finca 18 via public bus, however, we recommend giving yourself two hours to get there, as the distillery is a beautiful place to relax if you arrive early!

There are three different options for getting to Finca 18, pre-arranged group pick-up, taxi , or local bus.  Find the exact location here .

Pre-Arranged Private Hire | The pre-arranged group pick-up can be coordinated with Greg , through the Finca 18 website . He’ll send a car to pick up your group or if he’s free, he’ll come get you himself.

Taxi / Uber | Getting a taxi or Uber, or the also popular, InDrive , you can arrange a pick up from your accommodation. However, since Finca 18 is nearly an hour out of town, you will likely not be able to get a taxi or Uber on your way back. You can always try and arrange a return time with your driver, but this isn’t guaranteed.

Local Bus | Taking the local bus to Finca 18 is actually really easy and is incredibly cheap. For under 20 pesos per person each way, you can snag the local bus and get dropped off right at the Finca 18 gates. This is the way we got to and from our Puerto Vallarta Tequila Tour and we loved that it added a bit of a local feel to the entire experience.

The bus you need is C25, and you can get it from Panama Street between Peru and Columbia right behind Ley.

The Finca 18 Distillery and Grounds

The Finca 18 grounds are gorgeous. In fact, even if you weren’t doing a full tequila tour from Puerto Vallarta, it’s a beautiful place to enjoy an escape from the city. There’s a covered area with multiple different areas to relax and take in the Mexican countryside.

This area used to be a restaurant, but it’s now converted into a lounge and tequila tasting area. There’s a bar here, and within the first half of 2024, the Finca 18 team hopes to have a bar tendered hired to offer drinks to guests both before and after their tequila tours and tastings.

Honestly, the lounge area is the perfect place to arrive for your tequila tour early and just sit and soak it all in before your tour begins. And shoot, there’s even wifi in the lounge area, so it’s truly perfect to enjoy both before and after the tour.

The Puerto Vallarta Tequila Tour Guide, Greg

Greg is an extremely knowledgable tour guide , and brings in not only a love of tequila to the tour, but also a background in being one of twenty certified agave spirits masters in the world. His expertise in tequila is nearly unmatched!

From contact before the tour to your greeting as you arrive on site, and then the tour and tequila tasting, Greg is your guy.

He’s also a partner in the Finca 18 business, and works hands-on in the distilling process, bringing the tour to a completely new level.

Puerto Vallarta Tequila Tour

The Finca 18 tequila tour in Puerto Vallarta is arguably the best tequila tour. I’ve only been on one other one, but have heard many stories of other Puerto Vallarta tequila tours, and I think Finca’s is the best.

Not only are you touring the actual distillery and tasting the tequila that is made right there on-site, you’re also getting first-hand knowledge from someone who is distilling, tasting, and running Finca 18.

Unlike other tequila tours in Puerto Vallarta, the tour is given by someone who’s passionate about making tequila and wants you to love tequila as much as he does. Greg’s passion for tequila shined throughout the entire tour, making the tour both more memorable and more of an immersive learning experience.

You’ll learn things like how long the distilling process takes. You’ll see the actual plants the tequila is made from. And, you even get to go inside the Cava, or cave, where the tequila ages… and shoot, those barrels smell good!

Book Your Tequila Tour with Greg Here.

Puerto Vallarta Tequila Tasting

After walking around the distillery grounds for about 45 minutes, the tequila tasting begins . And this isn’t just a shoot back a shot of tequila tasting. Greg’s background as a certified agave spirits master, enables him to teach those doing the tequila tasting different ways to bring out different flavors of the tequila.

Greg explains how to breathe while you taste the tequila, how to move the tequila around in your glass to bring out different flavors, and even how to move the tequila through your mouth as you drink it.

Each tasting is given in a different glass to enhance the tasting experience.

Not only that, but as an optional add-on of 180 pesos, you can pair your tequila tasting with a chocolate tasting from a local chocolatier. Each of the chocolates is perfectly paired with the tequila tasting, and are melt in your mouth, drool-worthy good.

Not interested in the chocolate pairing, no worries, snacks are provided to enjoy as you sample the different tequilas.

Four different cups for the tequila tasting, one a shot glass, one a clay bowl, one a bowl made from a gourd, and one a champagne flute.

Things To Note About This Puerto Vallarta Tequila Tour + Tasting

Tequila tour duration .

The tour itself is located at the distillery 1 hour 15 minutes outside of Puerto Vallarta via public transportation. So when considering joining this tour, it’s important you keep in mind the extra time for transportation, the tour and tequila tasting, and the time you’ll likely want to spend on the Finca 18 grounds.

We’d recommend planning for five hours in total for this Tequila Tour in Puerto Vallarta .

Timing For Your Tequila Tour and Tasting

When choosing a time, it’s worth noting that most of the tour is done outside in the sun . There are super cute personal umbrellas provided, but it’s still pretty hot and you’ll be walking / on your feet for about an hour.

It may be best to choose an early tour if you’re concerned about the heat!

Money

Credit cards are accepted at Finca 18 both at the gift shop and to purchase the chocolate pairing and any bottles of tequila you’d like to bring home.

If you are taking public transportation to and from the tequila tasting, you’ll need to bring pesos with you to pay the bus driver.

A New Tequila Tour in Puerto Vallarta

Finca 18 is only two years old at the time of writing this. On the tour, you’ll learn more about the start of the distillery, the history of the grounds the distillery is located on, and the heart and passion that goes into the making of this tequila.

With it being such a new distillery, and the politics of who can and cannot say they’re tequila, it’s actually a Raicilla that is made at Finca 18 . But don’t let that deter you, you’ll also learn all about the name behind tequila, mescal, and Raicilla, and why they have to be Raicilla on the tour.

A covered patio style restaurant/lounge with multiple tables and chairs and a bar in the back.

The Future of Finca 18 Tequila Tastings in Puerto Vallarta

With Finca 18 being such a new distillery, the agave plants the tequila is made from on their land are still too young and new. While their agave plants mature, they are sourcing their agave both locally and ethically.

They are the only distillery that makes their tequila from the blue agave seed, and they currently have over 12,000 agave plants in three different gardens across 11 different species that will soon be producing the Finca 18’s tequila.

Once those plants mature, the entire distilling process, from seed to sip will be created right on the the Finca 18 property !

Truly, you don’t want to miss this tequila tour and tasting in Puerto Vallarta!

A Final Toast to The Best Tequila Tours in Puerto Vallarta

Faq about tequila, the history of tequila.

mule with two agave plants at a tequila tour in Puerto Vallarta

Tequila is the OG of North American spirits. Literally. Plus, it’s the life of the party in Mexico.

It started back in the day when the Aztecs used the agave plant to make pulque. It’s a funky fermented drink you can try at places like BomBon in Puerto Vallarta—coconut pulque is the best flavor—of course, we’ve tried it! Mark is more of a fan than I am.

Anyway, back to the Aztecs.

At the time, they had no idea their methods would continue and lead the way for tequila greatness.

Fast forward to today. Making tequila is still all about TLC. It’s a passion project. It’s hard, hot, and a slow, laborious process. Even the youngest tequila takes at least five years from start to finish.

The Tequila 411

rows of agave for tequila

I don’t want to get into all the nitty-gritty because when you take one of these tequila tours in Puerto Vallarta, you’ll get the inside scoop on the whole tequila enchilada—from agave to ahhh delicious.

You’re not just chilling and drinking the whole time, not that there is anything wrong with that. You know we don’t judge.

But here are some basics about tequila—the 411—if you will…

It all starts with the star of the show—the agave plant. The Blue Agave, to be exact. This spiky, bluish punk rock looking plant only grows in a handful of Mexican states like Nayarit, Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guanajuato, and Jalisco, home to the town of Tequila (and Puerto Vallarta, where we live ).

Tequila isn’t just a drink; it’s a bona fide pueblo magico and the birthplace of the very first tequila distillery.

After all my years of drinking tequila, I didn’t know it was a town until we moved to Mexico . So, if you didn’t know, you’re not alone.

To earn the tequila title, it’s gotta come from these states. Just like champagne is only deemed the real stuff if it’s made in the Champagne region in France. The same rules apply here.

Anything made outside of these sacred states is not tequila. It’s an agave spirit like raicilla or mezcal. So, don’t let anyone fool you if you’re in Playa del Carmen and they try to take you on a tequila tour.

Fun fact : In 2006, the Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila were deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site . So, agave and tequila are an integral part of Mexican culture. It’s not just because Mexicans love a good fiesta!

Quick Tequila-Making Overview

jimador, or tequila farmer in an agave field

Ok, so how does it go from plant to palate?

The agave journey begins with the jimadores , the unsung tequila farmers. These guys still use ancient methods and tools to harvest the agave. Once an agave plant reaches the ripe age of 5-7 years, they slice off those pointy spikes, leaving behind a heart called the piña.

These piñas get roasted, sometimes for days, and all the sugary goodness ferments with the yeast, creating some alcohol magic.

Then, it’s ready to get distilled and aged.

The various categories of tequila hibernate in barrels for different lengths of time, giving them unique flavors and personalities.

four shots of tequila at one of the tequila tours in Puerto Vallarta

  • Blancos: Aged up to two months.
  • Reposados: Minimum of two months up to a year.
  • Anejos: Minimum of one year.
  • Extra Anejos: Aged for at least three years.
  • Cristalino: Made from anejo or extra anejo tequila filtered to remove the color and bring out the floral and fruity vibes.

Most tequila does its aging dance in oak barrels, sometimes from old whisky ones. The longer it hangs out, the deeper the color, aroma, and flavors get. It’s where it picks up those honey and caramel notes, too.

So, there you have it, the tequila 411 in a nutshell.

Now, let’s quench your thirst.

Don’t have time to read this whole blog? These are the fan-favorite tequila tours, and they all have a nearly perfect rating!

rows and rows of agave on the drive to Tequila for a tour

I wanted to start this list of tequila tours with the ultimate immersion into Mexico. It’s a 12-hour tour for the most dedicated fan of tequila. You have to be ready for a long haul with this tour because you’ll actually drive from Puerto Vallarta to the town of Tequila—a four-hour drive—making stops along the way.

This isn’t for the tequila curious. It’s for the tequila devotee. It’s also the most expensive on this list because it’s a small group (10 max) tour that immerses you in authentic Mexican culture. It’s waaaay more than just sipping tequila. You get to experience a lot.

You get picked up at your hotel in Puerto Vallarta and start off with a traditional Mexican breakfast of birria tacos—a yummy, hearty street food.

Then, you’ll hop into your air-conditioned van and head to Toriles, where you’ll explore Aztec ruins, tombs, and temples dating back over a millennium.

But you aren’t here for Raiders of the Lost Ark stuff. You are here for the best tequila tours.

So, let’s move on to the liquid gold portion of the day. I can tell you’re getting thirsty.

As you leave Toriles, the landscape will change, and you’ll start to see the blue agave fields that seemingly never end. Until you hit Tequila, the town. Not the bottle.

four people at a tequila tour near Puerto Vallarta

You’ll spend some time walking around Tequila with your private guide. It’s an adorable pueblo full of cute bars and a lively square with roaming mariachis just waiting to play to a dancing crowd. That doesn’t take long since the entire town is hopped up on go-go juice from morning to night. And when Mexicans are happy, they like to sing and dance. Add in a little tipple, and it’s an effervescent scene.

After your walking tour, you’ll head to Jose Cuervo , the oldest tequila distillery in the world, founded in 1812. Here’s where you’ll learn how it all began. Besides the history, you’ll learn the ins and outs of tequila making. We loved the Cuervo tour, and we tasted all their top-notch tequilas!

If you get a chance, try Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia. It’s like sipping a fine scotch with caramel, honey, and vanilla notes. It’s our favorite, but it’s not cheap.

After your tasting, you’ll hop back in the van for the journey home. Sweet dreams!

person with agave pinas in a basket

If you have more time and want to spend it in Tequila, you can rent a car and do a similar tour yourself. Or you can show up at any distillery and book a tour when you arrive.

Another option is this tour from Guadalajara , which is only 2 hours away. Or the infamous Jose Cuervo train tour . We haven’t taken it, but from what we hear, it sounds like a booze cruise on a train. And it sells out almost daily. You might hear it called the Puerto Vallarta Tequila Train, but that’s a misnomer. It starts and ends in Guadalajara, not Vallarta.

group of ATV riders on the way to their tequila tour in Puerto Vallarta

Where the last tour was a bit more civilized, this Puerto Vallarta tequila tour is all about getting down and dirty.

This two-hour tour fuses adrenaline-pumping action with tequila. A perfect combo—am I right?

Hop on your ATV and start busting through jungles and untraveled paths in the Sierra Madre mountains. If you slow down, you might see some cool flora and fauna, but otherwise, you’ll be whizzing over rocky terrain on your way to the crystal-clear El Salto waterfall for a cool down. And to get the dust and mud off.

End the tour with a well-earned tequila tasting.

cacoo god statue in the Puerto Vallarta Botanical gardens tequila tour

If you know me, you probably know that I dream of having a garden, but I kill everything in sight, except Mark. I have a black thumb of death no matter what I do.

Thankfully, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens are just south of our home, so going there for a few hours is easy.

These are no ordinary botanical gardens. They are award-winning stunners set between the ocean and the mountains. And during hummingbird season, you can feed one from the palm of your hand. Total magic!

Anyway, I digress. On to the tour and the tequila tour bit.

You’ll get picked up in an air-conditioned van and head to the Vallarta Botanical Gardens. With your private guide, you’ll explore the garden packed with 3000 plant species and over 230 bird types.

Additionally, there is THE most glorious chapel I’ve ever seen. And I’m not too big into chapels, but this one is a showstopper. It’s tiny, but the walls are covered in flowers and butterflies, and I didn’t want to leave.

But you have to. Because, tequila.

Time to hop back in the minivan to head to Rancho Los Veranos, a distillery and restaurant where tequila is the star of the show.

There, you’ll learn all about the process of tequila making and distilling and, of course, taste a few while you’re at it.

Pro tip : Lunch isn’t included in the price of the tour, but you can buy it while you’re there.

girl rappelling in yellow shirt and helmet before her tequila tour in Puerto Vallarta

Some say tequila makes them so crazy they’ll do anything, even swing from the trees. Well, in this Puerto Vallarta tequila tour, that’s pretty much what you’ll be doing.

This is when you get to channel your inner Tarzan. We love zip lining and went on a 7-hour extreme zip line adventure for Mark’s birthday. The only problem was that we didn’t get to add tequila to the mix. This tour would have solved all our woes.

Anyway, after soaring at high speeds through the treetops, you can rappel or free-fall down to the jungle floor.

Then, you’ll hop into an innertube and float down a river to meet your next mode of transportation—your personal Mexican limo, aka, a mule.

Armando, the mule, will escort you to the top of the hill for your tequila tour and tasting.

girl on a zipline before her tequila tasting in Puerto Vallarta

This tequila tour starts with a speedboat ride across Puerto Vallarta’s bay as you head toward the zipline course. If you’re lucky and it’s whale-watching season , you might even spot a humpback on your way! Once on land, you’ll get prepped to fly through the sky via 15 different zip lines. The last zip line propels you directly into the tequila bar and riverfront restaurant.

How’s that for an entrance? Take that, James Bond!

Here, you’ll have your tequila tasting, and if you want mango margaritas and a three-course lunch (for an additional cost), you’ll have plenty of time.

Afterward, you’ll have time to hurl yourself down waterslides into the river’s natural pools. If you’ve had enough of launching yourself for the day, you can grab a kayak and float around. And if you think tequila and watersports don’t mix, stay dry on land at the on-site menagerie.

This tour is excellent if you are already familiar with the legendary elixir.

Additionally, the tequila tour is in  Versalles , one of the most up-and-coming neighborhoods in Puerto Vallarta. It’s known as a haven for all things food, so after your tour, stick around and check out Lamara ,  Florios , and Oregano , which has a little piggy running about named Arepa. But if you’d rather eat a little pig than pet one (sorry, Andrea), head to Puerco de Oro .

An Unforgettable Learning Experience Second to None!

First off, Corinna and Lobo are FANTASTIC hosts!!! I've never felt so welcomed by any tour operators, and they are quick to make sure you feel like long lost friends reunited. Lobo is extremely knowledgable about all things tequila and agave, plus has all kinds of fun facts about Mexico and just about everything else, that he mixes with the perfect dash of humor that makes for a super fun time.

Corinna is super lovely and made our reservation process very pleasant. I can't wait to come back to try all of their tastings! HIGHLY recommend this tour!

A Trip Highlight - Highly  Recommend

We had Ricardo and his wife, Corinna, come to our house to lead us through a unique and informative tasting. What a wonderful way to spend a couple of hours! We learned so much and found both of our guides charming and delightful. Their passion for tequila is infectious and their approach was educational and fun.

If you're on the fence about booking them just do it. You will love hearing their perspective and it will give you a good base for enjoying quality tequila when you're back home.

Fantastic experience!

We were a group of 6 people - different ages, different backgrounds, etc - yet we all truly enjoyed our experience with Edgar at the Casa Tradicional in the city. Edgar was very knowledgeable, gave us a thorough presentation about the history, the process and then the tasting of different Tequilas. As a complete novice to Tequila, I was quite impressed. Very, very interesting.

Taking A Day Trip From Puerto Vallarta To Tequila? Here’s What You Need To Know

Joanne Silatei July 1, 2018 Behind the Food , Mex-ology

A popular day trip from Puerto Vallarta is to the town of Tequila. It’s about 4 hours away depending on your route, making it a perfect overnight trip—especially if you will be drinking. Here is what you need to know before you go.

tour de vallarta a tequila

What Tequila Has In Common With Champagne

In order for bubbly to be named Champagne it must be grown in the Champagne growing region of France otherwise it is just a sparkling wine. A similar classification is true for Tequila, as it must be distilled from the blue agave growing regions—most of which are in the state of Jalisco. However, small sections of the surrounding states of Nayarit, Michoacán, and Guanajuato and a small growing region on the Mexican east coast in Tamaulipas can also produce authentic tequila. Since approximately 80% of Tequila is grown and distilled in the city of Tequila making it a popular tourist destination.

Day Trip From Puerto Vallarta To Tequila - Tequila Tasting

Not All Tequila Is Created Equally

You certainly don’t have to go to the city of Tequila to sample a wide range of Tequila, as there are many tasting spots in Puerto Vallarta. In fact, we taste quite a few on our Mex-ology food and drink tour . However, not all tequila is created equally. While the fruity and flavored Tequila that you find in and around PV is fun, and a unique gift or souvenir— there are different classifications of tequila . As with many other liquors, it’s has a lot to do with maturation. Blanco or silver tequila can be served shortly after the distillation process and is often used for margaritas and mixed drinks. Reposado is aged in an oak barrel for 2 to 12 months, making it ideal for sipping or mixing. If sipping be sure to let it aerate for a bit first.  Añejo and extra-añejo are aged in oak barrels for 12 months or more and have an oakiness and are more common for sipping.

Day Trip From Puerto Vallarta To Tequila - Tequila Tasting

Mezcal Is Not Tequila

Think of Mezcal (or Mescale) similar to how you would compare sparkling wine to Champagne—similar but certainly not the same. Tequila is a Mezcal but Mezcal is not Tequila just like Champagne is a sparkling wine but sparkling wine is not Champagne. Mezcal is also made from agave but can be made from over 25 different types of agave, including the blue agave plant—which Tequila must be made from. However, processing and distillation are quite a different process. The classifications of blanco, reposado, and Añejo are the same. Overall, Mezcal has a bit more of a smoky flavor when compared to Tequila. It can be stronger depending on the proof, which is up to 110 proof. The worm that you sometimes find in a bottle of tequila (which is actually a moth larva that grows on agave plants) originated in Mezcal bottles as a marketing ploy—and was adopted by many tequila brands.

Last but not least, while you can’t ship Tequila or Mezcal out of the country without the proper licensing—you can fly it home. Just be mindful that what you purchase must be placed in your checked luggage or purchased at the airport Duty-Free shop after you pass through security. The taxes and duty for what you bring in your checked luggage will vary by country.

Day Trip To Tequila From Puerto Vallarta

Day trip to Tequila from Puerto Vallarta! Explore the town, visit a distillery, learn about how tequila is made, and enjoy tasty samples.

**A big thank you to Via Rio Grande Tours for providing us with a complimentary tour in exchange for this review**

Day Trip To Tequila

After our first house sit in Mexico , we chatted with the homeowners. Knowing that we were still going to be in the country for a while, they suggested other places they thought we should visit. One of those places was the town of Tequila. When we realized we could take a day trip to Tequila with Via Rio Grande Tours , we jumped at the chance.

The town of Tequila was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. It is also one of Mexico’s “Pueblos Mágicos” (Magical Towns). While in Mexico one of our goals was to visit as many Pueblos Mágicos as we could, so we’re happy we got the chance to take this day trip to Tequila.

Note: Although we went with a tour, you can also arrange your own transportation from Puerto Vallarta to Tequila using companies like gottoGO.

Traveling To Tequila From Puerto Vallarta

Getting to Tequila from Puerto Vallarta takes a few hours. Our meet-up spot was at the local Sam’s Club and we were told to be there at 4:45 AM to check in and leave by 5 AM. We arrived as the buses and shuttle vans were just pulling up. Next, we checked in and were told what bus and seats we had.

The bus we took for our day trip To Tequila From Puerto Vallarta

We left a little late, maybe around 5:30 AM. Then we made two quick stops in the towns of Mezcales and Bucerias to pick up additional passengers. And we were off! We left when it was still dark, but as the sun came up, we could see the landscape changing and it was really quite pretty.

About halfway to Tequila, we stopped for breakfast at La Sierrita Restaurant. They had different meat options for breakfast and the platter came with coffee and cookies. Breakfast is not included but it’s very affordable. We paid $12 for two breakfasts.

Delicious and filling breakfast on our way to Tequila

After everyone finished eating, we all climbed back onto the bus and continued on our way. We arrived around 11:15 AM, so the bus ride from Puerto Vallarta to Tequila took a little over six hours. Keep in mind, though, that that included two additional pickups and breakfast. If you’re traveling to Tequila from Puerto Vallarta without stops, it is about a four-hour drive.

Things To Do In Tequila

After the bus was parked, we were given an hour and a half to explore Tequila on our own. We followed the crowds and made our way to Tequila’s main square, Plaza Principal. Along the way we passed restaurants, souvenir shops, and, of course, liquor stores selling tequila.

On the main square there are many opportunities to take photos. There is artwork, a sculpture that has “Tequila” spelled out in bright colorful letters, and a gazebo. Next to the square is the town’s main church, Parroquia Santiago Apóstol, which was built in the 18th century.

If you’re visiting Tequila with more time, there are multiple museums in town as well as distilleries that offer tours and tastings.

Visiting The Tequila Tres Mujeres Distillery

We headed to our next stop once everyone was back on the bus. We arrived at the Tequila Tres Mujeres distillery around 1:30 PM. There, we were greeted by our guide who gave us a tour of the property for about an hour. She explained the entire tequila-making process and afterwards, we were able to sample four of the distillery’s tequilas.

At the distillery, we were also given a complimentary lunch and as we ate we were serenaded by a gentleman with a lovely singing voice.

Cantaritos El Güero

After everyone finished eating and walking around the distillery a bit more, we got back on the bus and headed to our final stop. Cantaritos El Güero is an outdoor roadside bar with drinks and live music. They are known for their “cantaritos” which are a tequila-based drink served in clay cups.

They do serve some food, but it appeared to be mostly snacks. The main reason people go is for the drinks. Their drinks come in different sizes, with the Jumbo holding 21 liters (5.5 gallons). It was crazy to see friends all drinking out of these huge jugs.

We were at Cantaritos El Güero for about two hours. We’ll be honest here and say this wasn’t our favorite part of the tour. It was very crowded and there were multiple bands playing at the same time, so it was just a bit too crazy for us. But everyone else seemed to be enjoying themselves, so many we’re just getting old LOL!

Final Thoughts On Our Day Trip To Tequila

It was a quiet ride back to Puerto Vallarta. We think most people had a pretty good buzz going on so they slept most of the way back. We pulled into the Sam’s Club around midnight and everyone went their separate ways.

Our day trip to Tequila was a pretty long day, but we enjoyed getting to visit the iconic town and learning more about the tequila-making process.

9 Reasons Why You Should Have Your Honeymoon In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Choosing a Puerto Vallarta honeymoon is a decision that offers couples a blend of romance, adventure, and cultural richness unmatched by many other destinations. The allure of golden beaches, luxury resorts, and vibrant Mexican culture provides an idyllic backdrop for newlyweds seeking a memorable start to their marriage. However, it is easy to get overwhelmed with so many choices in such a paradise. Do you go with Cabo , or Puerto Vallarta? Here are 9 reasons why you should opt for Puerto Vallarta.

First-mexico’s pacific coast.

Nestled on Mexico’s vibrant Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta beckons honeymooners with its breathtaking beaches and a lively, yet intimate, city vibe. It’s a city where modern luxury meets traditional charm—think cobblestone streets, a stunning cathedral, and quaint boutique shops, all creating an atmosphere you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere.

This picturesque paradise boasts not only an impressive array of upscale accommodations and gourmet dining but also an inviting oceanfront against the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Beyond the beauty, Puerto Vallarta charms with its friendly locals, rich culinary scene, unique shopping experiences, and an energetic nightlife, making it a dream destination for newlyweds seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Here are the 9 reasons to choose Puerto Vallarta for you honeymoon!

1. The Malecón Boardwalk

The best way to begin your romantic getaway in Puerto Vallarta is to visit the Malecón boardwalk, a popular attraction in the city. There are few honeymooning experiences to match strolling the entire boardwalk in the backdrop of the setting sun. The view is incredibly picturesque. This is peak business time for vendors and performers.

You can get a range of local desserts and a host of Mexican handmade crafts such as jewelry, paintings, dolls, and other classics.

Don’t forget to get your caricature done by the artists offering their skills near the Puerto Vallarta board in Malecon. Expert caricature artists can draw your picture in 10 minutes, but it could be the best memento of your honeymoon trip.

2. Cerro de la Cruz

A hike to Cerro de la Cruz guarantees a genuinely enchanting experience in Puerto Vallarta. It’s perfect for those who love a little bit of outdoor physical activity. Situated high above the city in the hills, this trek entails climbing numerous steps.

For those adventurous couples, the hike to Cerro de la Cruz is a must-do. It’s a scenic trail that leads you to sweeping views of Puerto Vallarta and the ocean, making for a memorable and romantic experience. The climb is manageable and offers a peaceful retreat from the city’s hustle. At the top, the vista is rewarding, offering a tranquil spot to enjoy together. It’s a lovely way to spend time with your partner, surrounded by nature’s beauty.

The ascent is not overly strenuous, but avoid hiking during the scorching midday hours, particularly in July and August. Reaching the apex of Cerro de la Cruz feels like stepping into a cherished trance. The serenity and tranquility will leave you stunned. The awe-inspiring panorama of the entire city and the sapphire ocean beyond is beyond comparison.

3. Early Morning Sunrise – The Puerto Vallarta Is Different!

Puerto Vallarta offers breathtaking beauty in its ocean, buildings, flowers, and people. However, the awe-inspiring experience of watching the sunrise with your partner is of a different level. Watching the sunrise may not seem exciting and unique, but Puerto Vallarta makes it one. You must witness it firsthand to understand why this one makes it to the must-do list.

4. Whale Watching – Don’t Miss This One

Whale watching can be easily among the unforgettable memories you gather while on a honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta. Witness the mesmerizing beauty of humpback whales in Banderas Bay while savoring the panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean.

Choose a good tour guide who can take you to picturesque sea-level locations, providing an up-close encounter with humpback whales in their natural habitat. Get some fantastic clicks from unique vantage points, offering a perspective rarely attainable in the natural world.

The whale watching season in Puerto Vallarta starts in December and extends until March. Occasionally, whales can be spotted as early as November or as late as May. The best time to observe humpback whales is during January and February.

5. A Day Trip to Tequila – Do It If You Love Mezcal

The journey from Puerto Vallarta to Tequila in Jalisco is around three hours by car. It may be a bit of a distance for honeymoon couples to drive on their own. But taking a tequila tour, with the added bonus of a scenic drive through the breathtaking countryside, is an experience you must not miss for anything.

Tequila and mezcal enthusiasts can check for reliable operators that offer day trips and the opportunity to visit a couple of tequila factories. You can explore the charming town alongside. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You will also find some excellent local restaurants serving the best delicacies. Explore that too!

6. The Weather

If you’re planning a honeymoon in Puerto Vallarta, it’s important to consider the best times of year to visit. The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. Expect sunny skies and warm temperatures. May to October is the rainy season, so be prepared for afternoon showers and higher humidity.

Avoid the Crowds

The high season in Puerto Vallarta is from December to March when tourists generally flock to the area to escape the winter weather in their home countries. Do you prefer a quieter and less crowded atmosphere? Try traveling during the shoulder seasons of April to June or September to November.

  • If you are celebrating your honeymoon from December – April: Head to Cabo or Puerto Vallarta to do some whale watching!
  • Interested in UNESCO World Heritage sites? Visit one of the 7 Wonders of the World – Chichen Itza while on your honeymoon in the Riviera Maya, Mexico.
  • Want to have shopping and nightlife at your fingertips? Playa del Carmen’s 5 th Avenue, the hotel zone of Cancun, the Malecon Blvd in Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas are sure to please!

Looking for adventure, golf, or fishing? Take your pick! There’s so much to experience when you visit Mexico!

7. Puerto Vallarta Honeymoons Are in Budget

Prices for accommodations and activities tend to be higher during the high season. If you’re on a tight budget or want to save money, travel during the low season of July to August. Otherwise, book your trip well in advance to benefit from early bird deals.

Ultimately, the best time for your Puerto Vallarta honeymoon will depend on your preferences and priorities. If you want ultra-luxe honeymoons we suggest other island nations.

If you are looking for incredible service for the money, Mexico will get you the most bang for your buck when it comes to the level of luxury and service you receive for the price. Part of the reason is that Mexico is just miles ahead of other destinations when it comes to hospitality & tourism.   A quote I once heard from a travel insider pretty much sums it up like this.“ In (the location I was at) if your drink spills, a waiter will come right away to clean it up.  In Mexico, the wait staff will see the glass at the edge of the table and come to push it back.”

8. Accommodation and Dining

Puerto Vallarta boasts accommodations where romance and luxury meet. There are several plush resorts with ocean views , private balconies, and spa services that cater exclusively to couples seeking to celebrate their new life together. These hotels often feature intimate dining options, creating the perfect setting for romantic meals.

When it comes to dining, Puerto Vallarta offers an array of romantic spots. From cozy beachfront restaurants serving fresh seafood to elegant establishments offering gourmet Mexican cuisine, couples have endless options to enjoy meals that not only tantalize the taste buds but also spark romance in beautifully designed settings.

9. Cultural Richness and Activities

Puerto Vallarta’s cultural tapestry offers honeymooners a rich palette of activities, from art walks showcasing vibrant galleries to traditional performances that echo the heart of Mexico. This diversity really makes it a personal preference of mine. I love it when couples engage in local festivals that celebrate the region’s heritage.

I’m always going to recommend taking a local cooking class! Or, trying tequila tastings, and exploring the lush botanical gardens. All of these offer unique experiences that deepen the honeymoon adventure, blending romance with the spirit of Mexican culture.

Some Facts About Mexico

Mexico has two completely different, but equally romantic & beautiful areas to enjoy an amazing honeymoon!  The Pacific side and the Caribbean side.

The Caribbean side of Mexico is located on the Yucatan Peninsula along the Caribbean sea, and is the most popular area of Mexico for any type of travel.  This is where Cancun, Riviera Maya, and many of the other popular destination wedding spots are located.  Everything mentioned above will be available to you on the Caribbean side of Mexico, including white sand beaches and the ability to enjoy the Caribbean Sea if you love getting in the water.

The Pacific Side of Mexico is of course located along the Pacific Ocean and was originally best known for travel spots such as Puerto Vallarta, and Acapulco, but now the hottest new spots to travel or honeymoon in Mexico is in either Cabo San Lucas or Puerto Vallarta!

Located at the end of the Baja Coast, Cabo is home to luxury resorts, amazing foodie experiences, championship golf, yoga retreats, movie star getaways, and authentic cultural experiences.   The beaches are wide and beautiful here as well, but darker sand than the Caribbean side, and are not usually swimmable due to the ocean currents and rip tides.  To find out if Cabo is worth it, check here .

Is a Puerto Vallarta Honeymoon For You?

If you’re on the search for the perfect honeymoon destination, you may want to consider Puerto Vallarta. Throughout the years, Puerto Vallarta was given nicknames such as “The Pearl of the Pacific”, “The Romantic City”, “The Playground of Mexico.” Good food, beautiful views, and a romantic atmosphere: what else could be better for your honeymoon?
