European Tour rebrands to DP World Tour as it reaches 50th anniversary

  • Published 9 November 2021

Lee Westwood won the European Tour's Race to Dubai last year as Matt Fitzpatrick won the DP World Tour Championship

The European Tour will become the DP World Tour from the start of the 2022 season and feature a total prize fund in excess of $200m (£147m).

The new global tour will feature 47 tournaments in 27 countries, including new events in the United Arab Emirates, Japan, South Africa and Belgium.

For the first time, three events will be co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour.

"This announcement is momentous and will herald a new era in global golf," said European Tour chief Keith Pelley.

The move comes as the European Tour, which was founded in 1972, reaches its 50th anniversary.

"The entire ecosystem of our Tour will be strengthened because of this hugely significant deal," added Pelley. "That was essential to us and to DP World, who have been an incredible supporter of our Tour as well as golf more widely, from grassroots through to the elite professional game.

"The DP World Tour is, therefore, a natural evolution of our decade-long partnership, and the presence of 'World' in our new title better reflects our global reach."

All events solely sanctioned by the DP World Tour will have a minimum prize fund of $2m (£1.47m), while the three events co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour are part of the strategic alliance signed between the organisations last year.

The lucrative Rolex Series expands from four tournaments to five, while the season-ending DP World Tour Championship will be the first regular European Tour event to feature a prize fund of $10m (£7.35m).

The first event in the 2022 season will be this month's Joburg Open in South Africa, which runs from 22-25 November.

Dubai-based DP World has been involved with the European Tour since 2009 when the Order of Merit was replaced by the Race to Dubai, which now culminates with the DP World Tour Championship.

The news comes after former world number one Greg Norman announced he was involved with a series of Saudi-backed tournaments on the Asian Tour, while the Premier Golf League continues to try to get involved with the PGA Tour.

2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule: Tournaments, dates, purses and venues

tour golf europeo

The 2022 DP World Tour (European Tour) schedule has been announced, with a significant overhaul to the 48-event docket that golf fans have been accustomed to seeing in recent years.

The most significant changes to the schedule are related to the strategic alliance between DP World Tour and the European Tour that was announced in November 2021, changing the name of the tour and raising the minimum value of purses to $2 million.

European Tour co-sanctioned, purse-boosted events

The two tours are co-sanctioning three events on their schedules, including the European Tour's Scottish Open, which has a new sponsor in Genesis, as well the Barbasol Championship and Barracuda Championship on the DP World Tour (European Tour). The fields in all three events will feature a split of player availability between DP World Tour (European Tour) and European Tour pros, including spots for 50 European Tour players in the Barbasol and Barracuda Championships, which will be played opposite the Scottish Open and Irish Open.

The Genesis Scottish Open will remain part of the European Tour's Rolex Series. The Irish Open, which will not be co-sanctioned in 2022, will have a purse boosted by the DP World Tour (European Tour) to $6 million -- nearly double the amount offered this year.

There are a variety of new events on the schedule this year, including the Ras al Khaimah Championship in the UAE, the Pecanwood Classic and Steyn City Championship in South Africa, the Soudal Open in Belgium, two new events in Asia (including one in Japan) and the return of the Cyprus Open.

World Golf Championships halved

Since 2009, there have been four World Golf Championships events on the schedule. However, there are just two on the 2022 schedule: the WGC-HSBC Champions in China from Oct. 28-31 and the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play in Texas from March 23-27.

With the Memphis-based event becoming a playoff event, the other change is the WGC-Mexico Championship dropping out of the series. A Mexico Championship is listed on the schedule as a full-field event.

European Tour rebranding to DP World Tour, doubling prize money starting in 2022

  • Associated Press

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- After 50 years, the European Tour by name is no more.

Starting in 2022, it will be rebranded as the DP World Tour in a deal that is set to double the total prize money to more than $200 million.

European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley said the title change better reflects the global nature of the tour.

On the 2022 schedule, only 23 of the 47 events will be staged on European soil.

"In many ways, it's a misnomer," Pelley said of the European Tour's current title. "We are definitely a world tour."

"We will always remember our heritage," Pelley added, "and those who have gone before us who helped us shape our tour ... but we also rejoice in our global footprint."

Pelley said there will be a minimum prize fund of $2 million for each tournament and prize money of "north of $200 million" for the season, compared to $104 million in 2021 and $70 million in 2020.

The deal is a huge boost to the finances of the European Tour that were badly hit by the coronavirus pandemic, causing a shutdown of the tour for three months beginning in March 2020.

The European Tour nearly a year ago announced a strategic alliance with the PGA Tour after one of the proposed new leagues had offered to take over Europe. The Scottish Open is now part of the PGA Tour, while European members have access to two U.S. tour events. More collaboration is possible in the fall months.

Meanwhile, Greg Norman is leading a new company called LIV Golf Investments, backed by Saudi Arabia's public investment fund, which is putting $200 million into 10 new tournaments on the Asian Tour. Those events and where they are played have not been announced.

The new tournaments do not include the Saudi International, which is no longer part of the European Tour schedule after three years ago and since signed a deal with the Asian Tour.

In a video message, four-time major champion Rory McIlroy said the deal was "great news for global golf."

Tommy Fleetwood, who was the Race to Dubai champion in 2017, said it provided "stability" and "excitement" to golfers on the tour.

DP World, a Dubai-based logistics company, has sponsored the season-ending event on the European Tour, which has been held in Dubai since 2009 and called "The Race to Dubai." It was previously the "Order of Merit."

The European Tour was founded in 1972, but events have been increasingly held outside the continent in recent years, with many of the biggest now staged in the Middle East.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy’s proposed return to boardroom ‘incredibly positive’ for PGA Tour

  • New chief executive of European Tour Group welcomes move
  • McIlroy motivated by desire to end split in elite men’s golf

The newly-installed chief executive of the European Tour Group, Guy Kinnings, has urged the PGA Tour to seize the opportunity provided by Rory McIlroy’s willingness to return to the boardroom to help heal divisions in the game.

The Guardian revealed on Monday that McIlroy will assume roles on the PGA Tour’s policy board and the PGA Tour Enterprises board, subject to a vote on Wednesday. McIlroy is motivated by a strong desire to end the current split in elite men’s golf, where the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Tour are essentially operating independently of each other.

“I would welcome it wholeheartedly,” said Kinnings, who succeeded Keith Pelley this month, of a McIlroy return to a position of power. “It would be an incredibly positive move for the PGA Tour to take but it would be great for everyone.”

Golf’s key constituent parts now involve various tours and the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV. McIlroy enjoys positive relations with Yasir al-Rumayyan, the head of the PIF.

“He takes an interest in so many aspects of the sport,” Kinnings added. “I have known him for a very long time and he is so thoughtful. You think you know what is going on in the game and then you listen to Rory and say ‘Wow, he has put that so well’.

“You want to have people who are ready to apply that kind of knowledge, experience and thinking. He is very well connected with people at the PGA Tour , the DP World Tour – we rely on him hugely – and also the PIF. He is the right person with those connections [and] would be a huge asset.”

Kinnings is adamant that a “united, global” route is necessary for the sport. “I see this as an amazing opportunity,” he added. “We truly have that, with the right people and voices to help shape it. Tiger [Woods] is involved, I am delighted Rory is looking at this. These are the people who should be helping to shape the game they have given so much to.

“I think it needs to be addressed and it needs to be addressed quickly. You need the right people round the table, giving it thought because this is complicated.”

McIlroy would become the only European voice on these PGA Tour committees, which itself is notable. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour have a strategic alliance but there has been general concern about European golf being left behind, with focus on the US. “I was always delighted to have European representation,” said Kinnings. “I think it is far better to have a global view and Rory truly has that.

“It is such an important time and he is passionate about reaching this solution that we all agree is in the best interests of the sport globally. So I think he would be so valuable, so constructive. Personally and on behalf of this tour, I would be delighted if he was back playing a very significant role in the important discussions that are ongoing.”
