You’ll also get to tour the actual flower farms, guided by the farmers themselves. A popular tourist activity is to learn how to arrange flowers on the silletas , which are what silleteros famously carry on their backs to transport flowers. You’ll learn not only the techniques they use, but also hear about the many traditions of the region’s silleteros .

At some point during the tour we’ll make time for a relaxing lunch, during which you’ll enjoy some regional food and drinks for a taste of authentic Colombian cuisine.

Santa Elena background

Santa Elena is a township of Medellín that’s just outside of Medellín; it’s easy to reach by car or bus, and is almost always sunny and warm. Medellín might be flooded with millions of flowers every year for the Festival of the Flowers, but in Santa Elena, it doesn’t take a festival for the flowers to show up; during the blooming season, they’re always around!

This township is in the mountains, and is actually located within the Arví Nature Reserve. Even though Colombia is known for its flower exports, these flowers aren’t destined for international consumers. Instead, the flowers of Santa Elena are mainly meant for the Festival of the Flowers, plus other buyers in the region.

Silleteros background

As roads and transportation improved, the silletas started being used to carry flowers or vegetables instead of people. Since many silleteros support themselves by growing produce as well as flowers, their silletas are used for whatever has to be brought to the markets. They can hold enormous numbers of blooms; during the festival in Medellín, they support flower arrangements that weight up to 100 pounds!

Highlights of the Santa Elena Flower Farms and Silleteros Tour

Tourist activities in Santa Elena are pretty much all centered around the village’s flower farms, and for good reason – these farms have brought both prosperity and fame to the village.

One of Santa Elena’s most important landmarks, the Silletero monument, is near the entrance of the village. This monument honors the lives and traditions of the Silleteros . It’s composed of three statues; in the middle is a man carrying an elaborate array of flowers on his back, with a woman and a young girl standing on either side of him. The statues look strong and bold, and at the base of the monument is the inscription “When a Silletero passes, it is Antioquia that passes”.

There are countless flower farms around Santa Elena, and many of them offer tours that are guided by the silleteros themselves. Visitors get the chance to walk around the flower fields, listen to the history of the area and the farm, and learn about the lives of the region’s flower growers. The farmers are always happy to answer questions, whether they’re about silletero traditions or how long the flowers take to grow. Each farmer has a deep knowledge of every part of the process, both from their own experience, and from generations of wisdom that they got from their parents and grandparents.

This tour wouldn’t be complete without learning the basics of arranging flowers on a silleta. The flower growers love sharing their knowledge and traditions with visitors, so many tourists enjoy the hands-on experience of putting together their own arrangement. A smaller silleta is typically used, for two reasons. First, a lot of people would have a hard time carrying a full-sized silleta with pounds and pounds of flowers laid out on it. Second, participants only have a limited amount of time to complete their arrangements, so a smaller one makes more sense.

Some people say this is their favorite part of the Santa Elena flower farms and silleteros tour. They get to chat with the silleteros , get up-close and personal with bunches of beautiful flowers, and take pride in the results of their efforts once the arrangement is done. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for some unique, colorful photos!

The silleteros are the farmers who keep alive the centuries-old tradition of flower cultivation. They personify the figure of the muleteers who, on muleback, penetrated and managed to dominate the rugged mountains of Antioquia, to found what is known as the Paisa culture.

The main event that celebrates the paisa identity in Medellín is the Desfilde de Silleteros, which takes place every August 7, when these representatives of the cultural heritage exhibit their best floral arrangements before the thousands of people who gather around them. The Silleteros and Flowers Tour in Santa Elena is the opportunity to meet directly with the silleteros and share with them, at any time of the year. In addition, this tour will give you a better understanding of what it means to be paisa and you will be able to observe and participate in the process of making a silleta.

We were happy that Sebastian was available again, so the tour was literally guided by a friend. The Street art topic in the Comuna 13 of Medellín is pretty diverse and in particular the political and social implications are very deep and a local guide helps a lot. We met a member of a local art initiative who was a graffiti artist himself. He took his time to explain the origin of the Hip Hop movement in this particular part of Medellín, all very detailed and without a rush. Absolutely worth it to do it with a private tour. There are tons of local guides strolling around the area bothering you to go with them, so arriving there already with your own guide is a plus. As we did not have time to travel to Cartagena the idea was to check out some colonial architecture close to Medellín. We went with Pablo who was very knowledgeable and well prepared. They picked us up after breakfast and it took about 1,5 hours to reach the village. As it is very hot there, please don't forget sunblocker and hats. Thank God the A/C was perfect and our driver knew the area pretty well to avoid long walks in the sun. Pablo walked with us through the colonial part where we learned a lot of hard facts combined with funny anecdotes of colonial history. Around midday he took us to a charming colonial restaurant to eat and pass the heat for a while. After lunch we met a local jewelry artist who explained to us in detail the technique Santa Fé is famous for. She uses recycled gold and silver but works the same technique as 500 years ago, a pretty outstanding detail I would say. Before heading back to Medellín we visited the famous Cauca bridge and had a cold beer in the shade observing this impressive river. To sum up, if you are looking for a combination of culture and landscapes that town is awesome and you will for sure not meet a lot of foreigners within the week. The market area is located in the middle of the city center. We booked the private transport option to avoid the tram and make the excursion nice and smooth. First we started with the fruit section and tasted a bunch of exotic stuff we never tried, that was really cool and the variety in Colombia is amazing. Then we checked out the other areas and the traditional products of the region before heading to a lovely small restaurant with the perfect offer and all ingredients straight from the same market. Silleteros (flower carriers) are famous over the world and participate in many parades and festivities. One of the world`s most famous parades is the annual Feria De Las Flores in Medellin and hundreds of Silleteros participate. La Feria de Flores es una fiesta realizada en la ciudad de Medellín cada año en el mes de agosto. Esta es la fiesta más emblemática de Medellín, donde la cultura e historia PAISA se muestran en cada evento. Este evento hace que miles de turistas de cualquier parte del mundo lleguen a Medellín a disfrutar de cada una de las actividades de la feria.

Un Poco De Historia De La Feria De Flores.

La primera celebración que se dio de  Feria De Flores  fue en mayo 1 del año de 1957 en la ciudad de Medellín. La iniciativa de esta actividad fue por  Arturo Uribe Arango,  un antioqueño que era miembro de la oficina que fomentaba el turismo de la ciudad. En este año se realizó una exposición de flores en la Catedral Metropolitana de Medellín. En ese entonces participaron 40 silleteros de Santa Elena (Corregimiento al oriente de Medellín). Desde el año 1968 la feria se empezó a realizar en agosto.

La primera feria duró 5 días, y en realidad no fue tan organizada ni fantástica como se hace en el día de hoy, pero fue un gran inicio para la feria más importante de Medellín, que hasta el día de hoy es esperada cada año por locales y visitantes.

La Feria De Flores En La Actualidad.

En el Día de hoy en esta festividad participan unos 500 silleteros, los cuales ganaron reconocimientos y premios por las silletas ganadoras. El sembrado de las flores empieza en febrero, ya que de esta manera pueden estar florecidas las diferentes variedades de flores para agosto. La familia de los silleteros son los que dedican tiempo para la elaboración de las silletas. El día del desfile salen más o menos a las 4:00 a.m. pero ni la hora ni el cansancio son impedimento para el ánimo que ocasiona el desfile de silleteros. Las Silletas pueden pesar 70 kilos y hasta más.

Cabe aclarar que no todos los eventos realizados en la feria de las Flores tienen que ver con flores. En esta fiesta encontramos, por ejemplo: el desfile de silleteros, el desfile de carros antiguos, las tabladas, feria de trovas, eventos gastronómicos, y mucha más. La fecha del evento es del 2 al 11 de agosto. Esta fiesta es un patrimonio cultural de Antioquia y Colombia. Por este motivo uno de los tours más realizados en agosto es el tour silleteros Santa Elena , el cual se realiza en una  finca silletera.

Tipos de Silletas.

Las silletas son objetos realizados de madera que se colocan en la espalda del silletero con una enorme cantidad de flores. Anteriormente las silletas se utilizaban para cargar algunas personas (generalmente personas adineradas) para facilitarles el trayecto por las montañas. Después los silleteros las utilizaban para llevar las flores desde Santa Elena u otras regiones hasta Medellín para venderlas. Aquí te mostraremos los diferentes tipos de silletas que hay, y que aprenderás en el tour de la finca en Santa Elena.

• La Silleta Monumental: esta silleta es la que tiene más color, es la más vistosa y la más grande. Puede medir 2×2 m. El diseño puede ser muy variado y sale de la mente del silletero. Las flores se colocan en ramilletes y de cuatro variedades como mínimo de flores.  Sin duda alguna no hay límite para la inspiración en la construcción de esta silleta.
• Silleta Emblemática: esta utiliza símbolos religiosos, patrios, educativos o retratos de personas importantes. Sus flores se pegan o clavan para que no se vea el icopor (cartón) donde se colocan. Este tipo de silleta empezó en la década de los 80 con Jaime Atehortúa uno de los silleteros más reconocidos.
• La Silleta Tradicional: continúa con el mismo diseño de las sillas antiguas, las cuales utilizaban los silleteros anteriormente cuando iban a Medellín. En esta silleta vemos una gran cantidad de flores (puede llegar a unas 100), las cuales son tradicionales en los silleteros. La medida de esta silleta es de 90×80 cm.
• Silleta Comercial: estas son patrocinadas o encargadas por alguna empresa que quiere que su logotipo o imagen se pueda apreciar en el desfile.

El Parque Regional Eco Turístico Arví es el lugar ideal para vivir la naturaleza , ubicado en el corregimiento de Santa Elena municipio de Medellín , puede llegarse viajando en el Cable Turístico Arví de longitud 4.6 km; durante este recorrido podrá disfrutar las panorámicas de la ciudad, los paisajes del Eco Parque Turístico Arví , la elaboración de silletas, su historia y anécdotas. Conozca la Cultura Silletera de cerca visitando una familia campesina de origen silletero residente en zona rural del Corregimiento, declaradas Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación .

El recorrido fue excelente y el guía turístico estaba muy bien informado a cerca de la finca, llegó a tiempo y dio un gran recorrido a un precio razonable. Yo también lo recomiendo a todos.

Did enjoy learning about the silleteros and the history, but felt that i only saw half of the story. Still, was pleasant and informative. Guide was knowledgeable.

This tour was awesome and especially with our tour guide. I requested an English speaking tour guide and he was great and was also very knowledgeable about the flower farm as well as many other facts and tours of the Medellin area. The farmer has been farming beautiful flowers in Santa Elena for almost 50 years and gave us a great tour of his property along with Elver who also knows a lot about them as well. The weather and the flowers were wonderful. I would highly recommend this tour.
