Touro Restaurant in Mishkanot Sha’ananim

Touro Restaurant is a gourmet restaurant that serves food that is kosher and has a rich Mediterranean menu with Asian influences. The menu also includes vegan and vegetarian options.

Chef Benny Ashkenazi emphasizes the freshness of the meat, the seasonal ingredients and innovative cooking methods, which are all essential to his culinary style.

Located in the Mishkenot Sha’ananim quarter of Jerusalem, with panoramas of the Old City Walls and of the Tower of David , this hotel is a perfect choice for travelers looking for a place to stay in the city.

This establishment is named in recognition of the American-Jewish entrepreneur whose generous donation allowed this neighborhood to be established. Judah Touro is a well-known name synonymous with lasting philanthropic contributions.

Touro Restaurant is located in a historic building that was once home to the renowned Chef Moise Pe’er’s famed restaurant. The restaurant was a gathering place for some of the most famous chefs and cookbook authors of the time. Today, Touro Restaurant continues to be a popular spot for both locals and tourists alike. The menu features classic French dishes with a modern twist, as well as an extensive wine list. It has been a regular stop for notable visitors such as Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek and other high-profile guests.

The restaurant has an outside veranda with breathtaking views of the Old City and a design that combines the elegance of the ancient building with contemporary accents. The atmosphere is soothing and offers an old-world charm to visitors.

At Touro, we are more than happy to accommodate groups of up to 120 people for events that are hosted on the veranda or up to 20 people for events that are hosted in a private room. private room. We understand that finding the perfect venue for your event can be difficult, which is why they offer both indoor and outdoor spaces that can be tailored to your specific needs. Whether you’re looking for a place to host a small gathering or a large party, Touro Restaurant have you covered.

Jerusalem Food Tour – An Ultimate Day of Eating In Old Jerusalem!

Jerusalem is one of the world’s most fascinating cities… and it also happens to be an amazing place to eat.

In this Jerusalem food tour post, I’ll give all the details about a few of the ultimate culinary gems to get a taste of this incredible city.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem food tour

I had wanted to visit Jerusalem since I was a kid, and finally I had a chance.

But along with some sightseeing, the main reason I wanted to visit Jerusalem was to eat, and see the incredibly loving people behind the food.

I met up with my friend David from  The Hungry Tourist  (check out David for some amazing food), and Rafram, an expert on Jerusalem, and we set off to devour the ultimate food of Jerusalem in a single day.

I’m going to share with you all the places we ate.

First, watch this entire Jerusalem food tour video:

(Or you can watch it on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLmNLrog6dQ )

hummus

Hummus Acramawi

There’s no better way to start the day off when you’re in this region of the world, than with a plate of hummus, pita, and fresh raw vegetables.

Of every hummus I’ve ever had, this little family restaurant located on the outside of Damascus Gate of Old Jerusalem, is probably the best I’ve ever tasted.

Hummus is relatively simple ingredient dish – chickpeas, tahini, olive oil, salt –  but what’s amazing, is that no two plates of hummus are the same. Every version tastes and feels different.

Jerusalem food tour

The hummus in Jerusalem at Hummus Acramawi was a more fluffy version (rather than being too dense), and almost had a whipped texture to it.

Additionally, the generous amount of olive oil made it perfectly moist without being too heavy and the lemon chili sauce is what elevated it to hummus perfection for me.

Again, up until now, this is the best hummus I’ve ever had anywhere.

Hummus Acramawi Address : 2 Ha-Nevi’im, Jerusalem 9720301, Israel Price:  20 ILS ($5.57) per plate

Al-shuala Grill Restaurant

Al-shuala Grill Restaurant

Just a short walk from Hummus Acramawi and you’ll find Al-shuala Grill Restaurant, known among food lovers to serve one of the best shawarma’s in Jerusalem.

As you enter the restaurant you’ll be in awe of the gigantic rotating meat, slow roasting away and waiting to be shaved into your shawarma wrap.

In addition to the meat being flavorful, the bread is a thin wrapper (similar almost to a Mexican flour tortilla or an Indian rumali roti).

Al-shuala Grill Restaurant Price : 26 ILS ($7.26)

Al Baghdadi Kabab

Al Baghdadi Kebab

Deep in the winding narrow lanes of East Jerusalem in the Old City, this piece of preserved history is a culinary gem. The owners family originally moved to Jerusalem from Baghdad.

Jerusalem food

When we arrived, the owner began making his kebabs from scratch, seasoning the minced lamb with salt, pepper, parsley and onions, and chopping and mixing it at the same time by rocking a curved sword over the ingredients ( you have to watch the video to see it ).

tours restaurant jerusalem

Additionally, he made one of the most memorable salads I’ve ever had – a combination of cucumber, tomato, and parsley, again, finely minced with the sword, and mixed with raw tahini .

Jerusalem best food

The kebabs, and the hand-made food love the owner showed to us was why this meal in Jerusalem was probably my favorite of the entire day.

Home-made hummus in Jerusalem

His hummus was also excellent and hand-made. It was more dense and sticky than the first version. Eating kebabs in Jerusalem is a food and people memory I’ll never forget.

Price : 100 ILS ($27.89)

Zalatimo Sweets

Zalatimo Sweets

One of the most legendary of all sweets shops in Old Jerusalem is Zalatimo Sweets, a generations old shop that only serves mutabak.

Mutabak is the Arabic version of a thin stuffed dough, and versions of it are common throughout the Middle East and influenced into Asia as well.

Old Jerusalem

For the version at Zalatimo Sweets, the owner slaps out a piece of dough until it’s paper thin – I think it’s filo. Then he fills it up with either cheese or walnuts, wraps it up into a little packet, brushes it with olive oil and bakes it.

Out of the oven, it’s dusted with powdered sugar and served with tea or murky Turkish coffee (what I ordered).

The Jerusalem style cheese mutabak was the clear winner for me. It was perfectly crunchy and gooey, sweet, and rich from the cheese, and amazing with coffee.

Also, it’s hard to beat sitting in an ancient shop within Old Jerusalem, the history of this place will blow your mind.

Price : 30 ILS ($8.37) each

best restaurants in Jerusalem

Azura Restaurant

Located within Mahane Yehuda Market, Azura is one of the best restaurants you’ll find for a huge local feast.

With all the food slow-cooked and presented at the front of the restaurant, just waiting to be ordered, it sort of reminded me of being back in Asia eating a Thai or Indonesia rice and curry feast .

The owner explained that much of the influence of his dishes were Turkish in origin, but his family also prepared some Mediterranean, Iraqi, and North African dishes.

Azura

Leave it up to David to order almost everything possible they had.

And the food was absolutely incredible.

best of Jerusalem

The restaurant name is Azura, but it’s named that because it’s also one of their signature dishes, a slow cooked eggplant covered in a wonderfully spiced minced meat topping that was loaded with cinnamon.

The azura was among my favorite dishes of our meal at Azura – do not miss it!

mousakka

Additionally, their mousakka, a layered minced meat and eggplant pie, was probably the best version I’ve ever had. I loved the tart tomato sauce it was drenched in.

Their Moroccan style oxtail stew is also insane. Ok, really, just choose whatever you see, and it’s one of those places where you can’t go wrong.

Total price for everything : 400 ILS ($111.55) but we had a lot of food

Mahane Yehuda Market

Mahane Yehuda Market

When you’re in Jerusalem, be sure to reserve some time to wander around Mahane Yehuda Market, a great open air food market. You could have an entire Jerusalem food tour right within the market – there’s so much to taste.

We sampled a few desserts including an Iraqi funnel cake, which tasted just like an Indian jalebi which I had previously eaten.

By this time on this extreme single day Jerusalem food tour I was starting to get a little full to be honest. So we set off to do a little Jerusalem sightseeing.

Western Wall (Wailing Wall)

Western Wall (Wailing Wall)

I won’t get into the details about the Jewish significance of the Western Wall of Old Jerusalem , you can always read more about it, but it was an amazing special site to visit in person.

While were were there, we also decided to tour the Western Wall Tunnel , an incredible underground network of tunnels built when King Herod expanded the Temple Mount.

Price – 35 ILS ($9.76) per person

Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem

Dome of the Rock

After emerging from the Western Wall tunnels I next wanted to visit the  Dome of the Rock , the most recognizable landmark in Jerusalem, and an important Islamic shrine.

Unfortunately everyone told us it was too late to enter, so we only managed to get an impressive view from a nearby school.

Old Jerusalem

Walking Old Jerusalem

In addition to the incredible Jerusalem food, and the unparalleled religious sites, just walking the ancient streets of Old Jerusalem was a highlight for me.

Walking down  Via Dolorosa , a lane in Old Jerusalem believed to be the path that Jesus walked on his way to crucifixion, was something truly moving and it was a privilege to have the opportunity.

Mount of Olives

Mount of Olives

Since our dinner reservation wasn’t until a little later, we decided to head to the top of the Mount of Olives for the sunset over Jerusalem.

Again, I was speechless at the beauty and the significance of the location.

Machneyuda Restaurant

Machneyuda Restaurant

To complete this ultimate Jerusalem food tour, David got us reservations at Machneyuda Restaurant, one of the most trendy and high demand restaurants in Jerusalem.

They serve very unique, very trendy, high quality, and creative dishes. And although it’s a loud music exciting kind of restaurant, it’s also fine upper-scale dining as well.

Jerusalem restaurants

Again, we had quite a significant amount of food, all served one by one. The mixed appetizer including everything from sashimi with tahini to rocket salad was excellent.

Jerusalem food tour

This stuffed burrata was also excellent, as was the truffle polenta, fillet mignon, and selection of desserts.

It was a great unwinding restaurant to complete one ultimately amazing Jerusalem food tour in a single day.

Machneyuda Restaurant Address : Beit Ya’akov St 10, Jerusalem, Israel Total price : 700 ILS ($195.21)

Jerusalem food tour

There are a lot of stories to tell in Jerusalem, but I came for the food.

And what I can tell you is that in Jerusalem you will be able to taste some incredible food, but additionally, when you start eating, you’ll connect with some extremely generous people.

This day of eating and exploring Jerusalem was one of the most memorable days of my life – the connection of food, people, history, and religion – it’s all at its strongest in Jerusalem.

Again, huge thank you to my friend David from the Hungry Tourist and Rafram, for taking me on this unforgettable day of eating.

Hi Mark, Wow great travel blog, Thanks a lot for quality photos they are really awesome.I would definitly like to try Israeli food. Can you please mention which camera do you use for photography ?

' src=

Alexandr Vyargizov

Hi Mark, great article. Many thanks for the quality photos.

I’m just thinking about the next place where I would like to go. And then I find your article. I am a supporter of gastro-tourism. This, of course, does not mean that I just do that stuffing the belly without leaving the hotel territory, no, it means that an important point in each of my trips, besides the sites – there will always be local food.

I really like to try something new and unusual. Madly I love spicy hot dishes.

Frankly, I am not used to think about the Jerusalem as a place where you can find such a wide variety of interesting food. First thoughts for some reason about the pilgrimage and the market with clothes, fabrics.

Summing up, I think next month and I will take a walk in the places described by you, and especially on the market. Funnel cake looks very appetizing.

' src=

I am no stranger to Middle Eastern food. But there are different things in this post. I feel happy to discover some new food about Jerusalem.

' src=

Since I don’t travel anymore, I just follow your blogs and that allows me to see all the different foods you taste, and all the places you see and travel too……I can almost taste the food that you show and that make me feel good…..! Thank you for your photo and sharing.

Hi Mark, I really enjoyed your Jerusalem tour!! Thank you so very much!! It certainly reminded me of Sebastian, his taste buds!! This was his favorite type of food, the vegetarian dishes especially. Man! I didn’t know that Jerusalem had such great eats! Thanks, Mark, Mrs Wiens and baby too! 🙂 It’s always a great pleasure reading your food reviews and watching your vids. Do add in more descriptions of the taste [I know that it’s not easy, but please do try. We only had your head-tilting and swooning expression to go on to gauge the ratings so far…. no offense :P] Still, you guys have earned your stripes! 😉

Salute! From an amateur food reviewer wanna-be. Warmest regards Casey Chiang, Singapore Here’s a little excerpt from one of my posts on FB for your opions: One of the biggest reasons that I love Halal foods is because they mostly made them from scratch. Imagine waking up at 2am to prepare the menu for the day (no joke right?). There’s simply no short cut for good tasting food n superbly textured chilies… N that’s Not even doing justice to each and individual sweat n hard work poured into each dish. We at EPIC take this opportunity to thank our local Halal chefs for they contribution to the local food scene. Without them, our foods would not have its current admirable n unique identity. Stay tuned, as we share n post more highlights in the local foods here in Singapore n other international cuisines that have decided to make their homes here. Kudos to all the chefs out there n their beautifully done, heartfelt recipes. They gave us a part of themselves in those dishes. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=931945353611565&id=100003883263749

Wonderful Mark THANKS ! Really I have never seen or thought about Jerusalem food before I am thinking of these foods relating it from the foods they had like in the Bible at the time of the Roman Empire in general and the foods in Jerusalem Nazareth and Bethleham in particular at the time of Jesus ….around the beginning of The aan no Domini and beyond …..up till now when you visited those places …a journey to know and to taste the interesting foods what we would know from the time in the Blible New Testament The photos of the views and of the FOOD are superb !!! BRAVO Mark and THANKS very much REGARDS from Jenny Nangoy

Hey Jenny, thank you very much for your thoughts and insights. It’s amazing to think that some of these same dishes could have been enjoyed back 2000 years ago in Biblical times in these same streets of Jerusalem. Hope you’re doing well and having a great weekend!

Location and contact.

Great food. Really helpful staff. Really recommend the hanger steak and the short ribs. All entrees are tasty. Worth taking a few. Will be back.

10 of the Best Restaurants in Jerusalem

There are so many exciting things about visiting Israel and one of them is definitely the food scene. Israel is an immigrant country, which means that everywhere you look you’ll find dishes that hail from Germany, Tunisia, Russia, Morocco, Austria, Iraq and a few other countries besides. The fact is, your taste buds are in for a great adventure and no more so than in the country’s capital, Jerusalem .

Interestingly enough, locals and visitors used to look to Tel Aviv for gourmet and foodie experiences but in recent years, that’s all changed. Jerusalem has suddenly blossomed into a foodie heaven, with an explosion of fantastic restaurants, wherever you turn, and - trust us - there’s something for everyone - meat-lover, fish aficionado, gluten-intolerant, and vegan-friendly besides. Today, we’re going to give you a rundown of the 10 best restaurants in Jerusalem. But before we start, we need to explain to those of you who don’t know a bit about the Jewish dietary laws. They really have an impact on eating out in the city, so it’s good to know in advance what you’re signing up for! Religious (observant) Jews, who make up less than half of Israel’s total population but are well–represented in the capital, abide by ‘halachah’ (Jewish law) and something that is essential for them is the separation of milk and meat. This, in a nutshell, is what is meant by the term ‘kosher’ (though it’s definitely a complicated subject).

Religious Jews, therefore, will only eat at restaurants that have certification from a Rabbinical authority. To obtain this, the restaurant must not just keep milk and meat separate (not serving it together in dishes i.e. chicken in a cream sauce) but also keep kitchen utensils in a certain way (to ensure this is done, rabbis will carry out inspections regularly). Moreover, to obtain a kosher certificate, the restaurant cannot be open on the Jewish Sabbath (from Friday at dusk to Saturday evening) as this would involve working and the exchange of money, which is prohibited by Jewish law.  It’s important for you to know this, to ensure you don’t arrive at a restaurant on Friday night, anticipating a delicious dinner, and find it in darkness! At the top of each listing, we’re putting each restaurant’s kosher status (whether or not they abide by these laws), and if they are open on Shabbat, to make things easier for you. And one last thing - eating out in Jerusalem is a big trend so we’d advise making reservations in advance, so you don’t end up disappointed. Here you go - and enjoy!

1. Restaurant Dolphin Yam, Jerusalem (not kosher, open on Shabbat)

Located in a preserved building in downtown Jerusalem, this is one of the most popular fish and seafood restaurants in the capital. Dolphin Yam (which means ‘Sea Dolphin’ in English) has a reputation well earned - it’s been in business for over four decades and is renowned for outstanding food, fair prices, and friendly customer service. This Jerusalem restaurant offers all kinds of delicious fish, and an array of seafood scallops, calamari, crab, shrimps, and mussels (all definitely not kosher!). The appetizers are well-known - breads (often focaccia) and salads in huge amounts are brought to your table and, for vegetarians, often a meal in themselves. Other dishes we’d recommend include the roasted head of cauliflower and beef fillet medallions.  Although this is a fish restaurant, they do have meat platters (if you’re keen on lamb chops, kebabs, and skewers, with an option to add foie gras). Dolphin Yam has a comprehensive drinks list, including wines from small vineyards in northern Israel. To finish, try the creme brulee or some halva ice cream. Dolphin Yam, Shimon Ben Shatahk 9, tel: 02 623 2272.

2. Restaurant Chakra, Jerusalem (not kosher, open on Shabbat)

Situated in the city center this fine dining restaurant offers fabulous service and a rotating menu, with local wines. Their outside courtyard is perfect for sitting in on a warm summer evening and the decor is as modern as the food. Chakra serves up upscale Mediterranean food, with something for everyone. They have an excellent choice of appetizers, which include chopped liver (a classic Jewish dish), eggplant roasted on an open fire, hummus with green chili, and carpaccio. Mains include tuna tartar, mussels, rump steak, steamed salmon with bok choy, and - for the vegetarians - an artichoke and Reggiano pappardelle, paired with pear, blue cheese, and pecan endive salad.  Their excellent wine list includes French and Italian classics with some high-end Israeli wines - Flam, Recanati, and Kastel. Leave room for dessert - their ‘deconstructed lemon tart’ is delicious and the strawberry mega eclair with meringue fingers and whipped cream is to die for. Our tip : try the Jalisco lychee cocktail or one of their excellent grappas. Chakra, 41 King George Street. tel: 02 625 2733.

3. Angelica Restaurant, Jerusalem (kosher meat)

This much-loved high-scale restaurant has a kosher meat menu and offers diners a superb experience, combining exquisite food with exemplary service. The chefs here pay a great deal of attention to presentation and strive to make the food creative. Angelica offers both a dinner menu and a tasting menu for the discerning eater. Appetizers include the chicken liver pate (a classic), smoked trout, beef tartare with capers, and a quail egg. Vegetarians will delight in their mushroom risotto and winter root vegetables.  Mains do not disappoint - diners rave about the goose breast, Asado stew, and famous hamburger. The tasting menu costs 290 NIS (92 USD) for five dishes. Some of their best wines come from the Golan Heights and even though this is a kosher meat restaurant, they do serve the lemon tart, chocolate fondant, and ice cream for dessert (which, considering they are not made with milk, are quite delicious). As well as the main restaurant, Angelica offers ‘The Chef’s Room’ (good for private events) and ‘The Stage’ which is ideal for medium-sized groups. Angelica, King George Street, tel: 02-6230056.

4. Mona Restaurant, Jerusalem (not kosher, open on Shabbat)

This elegant eatery, situated in a stone building named the Artist’s House, with a tree growing through the indoor part of the restaurant (yes!) is famed for its modern Israeli cooking and a favorite of old-time Jerusalemites. (The Artist’s House, by the way, formerly housed Jerusalem’s famous Bezalel School of Art and Design). Styling themselves as a bistro, of late they have redesigned their menu, which now comprises a larger number of smaller dishes, rather than the traditional ‘appetizer, main, dessert’ idea.  Some of these include the New York steak, veal cheek, sashimi with labane (a local cheese) and tomato seeds, and a traditional chicken consomme. Mona’s service is both professional and friendly and the waiters know their stuff - their recommendations are always good. Cocktails have generous amounts of alcohol and the tart tatin is highly recommended. Not cheap, but thoroughly worth it. Mona, Shmuel HaNagid 12  Tel: 2-622-2283.

5. Mamilla Hotel Rooftop Restaurant, Jerusalem  (Kosher but open on Shabbat for cold dishes)

Situated on the rooftop of the luxury Mamilla hotel, this fantastic restaurant offers high-quality dining, with spectacular views of downtown Jerusalem thrown in. And let’s face it, there’s nothing like looking down on the Old City, the King David hotel, and the YMCA whilst you sip on a cocktail or indulge in a steak. The Rooftop Mamilla serves a very sophisticated menu, including dishes such as ‘duck in a blanket’, foie gras, sashimi, roasted goose breast, and delicious mushroom risotto for the vegetarians. This restaurant has a reputation for employing knowledgeable sommeliers with a superb array of wines both from Israel and abroad. Their desserts do not disappoint either - try the sorbet on a hot evening or the coconut malabi (a new twist on a classic Middle Eastern dessert). Mamilla Rooftop is kosher but it is actually possible to eat there on Shabbat - there are restrictions (cold food and payment beforehand) but it’s very doable. But whenever you’re going, book ahead, because this is a very popular venue. Rooftop Mamilla, 11 King Solomon Street, 02-5482230

6. Piccolino Restaurant, Jerusalem (kosher dairy)

You’ll find Piccolino in the Nahalat Shiva neighborhood. This no-meat kosher dairy restaurant has a good reputation, friendly service, live music, and delicious soups, salads, pasta, pizza, and fish. The varied menu includes a cheese plate appetizer, various antipasti, and mains that include the truffle and salmon pizza, eggplant parmesan, and arancini (traditional fried Roman rice balls). Fish lovers will enjoy the salad with tuna steak and Norwegian salmon drizzled with a citrus vinaigrette. For dessert, we’ve heard good things about their pecan pie, creme brulee, and cheesecake. And as well as beer and wine, they also serve milkshakes. Yum! Piccolino, Yo’el Moshe Solomon tel: 02-624-4186.

7. Anna Restaurant, Jerusalem (kosher dairy)

Close to Ben Yehuda Street in New Jerusalem, you’ll find ‘Anna’ in the Anna Ticho House, a historic building with a beautiful interior - it was one of the first homes built outside the Old City, in the 1860s. Serving delicious Italian food with an Israeli twist, it’s a wonderful place to eat lunch or dinner. Anna has a diverse wine list and knowledgeable staff.  Chef Nimrod Norman serves up an array of simple yet fantastic dishes including sea bass, salmon, ravioli, and pappardelle. His signature dish - ‘Gnocchi Anna’ - is well-known for its soft, fresh pasta, roasted tomatoes, asparagus, and creme fraiche. And don’t forget to save room for dessert.  Whether it’s lemon tart, tiramisu, or key lime pie, you won’t be disappointed - and the espresso at the meal’s end will blow your mind! HaRav Agan 10, tel: 02 645-3746.

8. MachneYuda Restaurant, Jerusalem (not kosher, open on Shabbat)

Possibly the hottest restaurant in Jerusalem at the moment, this eatery is located just a stone’s throw from the famous Mahane Yehuda Market and is a must-visit for anyone who loves food. Whatever you choose will be good - salmon gravlax, prime rib, seafood pasta, or a simple polenta ragout. Dishes that diners rave about include Amberjack tartare with a wasabi vinaigrette, oxtail and Jerusalem artichoke, and refreshing gazpacho. Wash it down with one of their famous cocktails or a shot of Arak (a local spirit) and don’t forget to order their chocolate mousse - it’s out of this world.

10. Adom Restaurant, Jerusalem (not kosher, open on Shabbat)

Adom (‘Red’ in Hebrew) is a restaurant in one of the most beautiful and historic buildings in Jerusalem - the historic train station area. Now known as ‘The First Station ’ complex, it is located in Emek Refaim, the heart of the German Colony , a charming and vibrant neighborhood and particularly popular with young people. Adom is a wine bar and restaurant offering a stylish and tasty menu and that, combined with its extensive wine collection and vibrant atmosphere, may be why it’s been voted one of Israel’s top ten restaurants. Adom’s menu changes regularly and on it, you’ll find salads, pasta, fish, seafood, and meat.

40 things you have to eat in Jerusalem

This event has ended

Sabich - 1

The faithful may rhapsodize about the spiritual highs to be reached in the Old City; culture cognoscenti groove on the offerings of dozens of theaters, performance venues and museums . But the true Jerusalem lover knows that the city's greatest attraction is, well, somewhat more tangible - and more edible.

You can take in all the epic Jerusalem vistas you want, but you'll never really understand the city until you've eaten your way through its mountains of varied and amazingly delicious food. The "gathering of the exiles" here means that almost every culture you can think of from around the world has a flavor represented, so don't even think about leaving your home or hotel without being duly apprised of these 40 things you absolutely must eat while you're in Jerusalem.

1. Knafeh (pictured), an Arab treat made of layers of bright orange shredded phyllo dough and melted goat cheese drenched in syrupy sweet rosewater, is certainly an acquired taste - but those who have acquired it are known to jones for the famous knafeh at Jaffar's.

2. Fight your way through sugar-starved crowds of seminary girls and American expats for a taste of the infamously pine rugelach at Machane Yehuda bakery Marzipan.

3. Called beigeleh in Hebrew and ka'ak in Arabic (not to be confused with the smaller, more cookie-like ka'ak in the rest of the Arab world), you can't miss this only-in-Jerusalem specialty: enormous loops of bagel-ish bread coated in sesame seeds, sold by mobile vendors all over the Christian and Muslim Quarters of the Old City. Buy a loop of beigeleh and you'll also get a little packet of za'atar (an oregano-based spice blend) for dipping.

4. Make your Sabbaths sweeter with a roll of sweet challah (challah metukah) from the Pe'er Bakery behind Emek Refaim Street.

5. Sabich (pictured) is the ultimate answer to those who claim Israel has no indigenous cuisine, because you won't find it anywhere else in the world. Created by Iraqi Jewish immigrants in Ramat Gan, a sabich is a pita stuffed to bursting with fried eggplant slices, sliced long-cooked hard-boiled eggs, hummus and pickles, then topped off with a generous drizzle of amba, a lip-smacking pickled mango sauce. Try it at HaSabichiya, which sells nothing else.

6. Dip your spoon into a generous helping of malabi (blancmange, almond-and-rosewater pudding). It's available as a dessert in Middle Eastern restaurants all over town, especially in the summer months.

7. Need we even say it? A trip to Jerusalem means the best falafel you'll ever have in your life. Treat yourself to falafel with all the fixings (hummus, Israeli salad, Turkish salad, pickles, pickled cabbage, French fries, hot sauce and tehina) at Moshiko, an exemplary falafel kiosk on the Ben Yehuda pedestrian mall.

8. As the sages say, where there is falafel, there is also shawarma. Made of spiced strips of meat (possibly chicken, turkey or lamb, depending on the location) layered atop each other on a rotating spit, you'll find it almost everywhere you turn. Load it up with the same fixings as you'll find with falafel, and you won't be disappointed.

9. Once upon a time, meorav Yerushalmi (Jerusalem mixed grill , pictured) was only for advanced gourmands, but in today's climate of worldwide offal-mad food trendery, we feel safe recommending this delicious Jerusalem delicacy to all visitors. The concept is simple: all the variety parts of your humble neighborhood chicken chopped up and griddled with onions and Middle Eastern spices, then stuffed into a pita. Try it at Chatzot, the home of the original.

10. Try lepeshka, the traditional round, crispy and fluffy bread of the Bukharan (Central Asian) Jewish community, at one of the old-school bakeries in the Shuk ha-Bukharim (Bukharan Market) near the Orthodox enclave of Me'ah Shearim. The black caraway seeds on top lend an earthy flavor.

11. Soul food from the Kurdish grandma you never had, red kubeh soup is a Jerusalem classic: meat-stuffed bulgur-and-semolina dumplings floating in a tangy broth of beets and root vegetables. The best is at Mordoch.

12. Coffee slushies are the original Jerusalem air conditioning. Try a classic Ice Aroma at the original branch of the Cafe Aroma coffee chain.

13. The word sambusak (pictured) is derived from the same Persian word that gives us samosa, and anyone who's enjoyed that Indian treat will be on familiar ground here. Traditionally, the tri-cornered fried sambusak are filled with mashed chickpeas, but you can also find them with ground meat or mashed potatoes. Get them fresh and hot from Machane Yehuda vendors on Friday afternoons.

14. What is the Middle East without tasty skewered meats? Kebabs, called shipudim (skewers) in Hebrew, are ubiquitous. You can't go wrong with Machane Yehuda's landmark HaShipudiya.

15. A laffa (soft, round Iraqi flatbread) is a laffa everywhere in the world except Jerusalem, where you might find it curiously referred to as an eish tanur ("oven flame"). You can pick up freshly made eish tanur at any Jerusalem bakery, the best of them being in Machane Yehuda, but the most inviting way to eat one might be wrapped around falafel or shawarma.

16. Create your own blend of fresh-squeezed-to-order fruit juices at Tutti Frutti on the Ben Yehuda pedestrian mall.

17. Eat a perfect piece of strudel (pictured) and enjoy the commanding view of the Old City at the Austrian Hospice cafe .

18. If the Machane Yehuda market's resident Yemenite witch doctor is to be believed, etrog-and-gat juice will cure whatever ails you, from nicotine addiction to impotence to the common cold. Take that with a grain of salt, but the juice is pretty tasty.

19. A beloved dish among Jerusalem's Arab population, musakhan is made of roasted chicken, onion and pine nuts served atop pieces of flatbread. Try it from vendors in the Muslim Quarter, or at Damascus Gate-area institution Philadelphia.

20. If you happen to be in town in December, try a sufganiya (filled Chanukah donut) in a variety of flavors at Roladin.

21. If you eat hummus in Jerusalem, you will never be able to enjoy it outside of the Middle East again. Still, it's worth it. Any of the top five hummus restaurants in Jerusalem won't let you down.

22. Around the Damascus Gate, you'll find coffee vendors who dispense hot Arab-style coffee from strange golden contraptions strapped to their backs. Worth it for the experience alone.

23. Pick up a slice of surprisingly decent pizza at Big Apple Pizza and skip the sprinkling of garlic and red pepper for a more Israeli pizza topping: za'atar.

24. Commonly referred to as the Palestinian national dish, maqlouba (in the local pronunciation, ma'alouba) is an inverted casserole of lamb, eggplant and rice. Many restaurants in eastern Jerusalem serve admirable versions, and locavore temple Eucalyptus has won raves for their take.

25. Midnight Belgian waffles covered in syrup and cream (pictured) just, somehow, make sense when mingling with Jerusalem's nightlife crowd. Don't miss the waffles on offer at tiny Babette's, at the foot of Shammai Street.

26. Try a procession of traditional Western European (and strictly kosher) sausages at Hess, down the street from the Russian Compound.

27. You'll never forget your first "Arabic pizza" at the Old City's Green Door Pizza Bakery. It is, shall we say, not what you might expect.

28. Savor a slow-cooked tagine of lamb in painstakingly authentic surroundings at Darna, Jerusalem's finest Moroccan restaurant.

29. Jachnun (pictured) is difficult to describe, but try to imagine a Yemenite pancake made of layers of phyllo dough rolled up into a tube and slow-cooked in an oven overnight - then served with pureed tomato and fenugreek salsa for dipping. Strange, but good. Try at it Jachnun Bar.

30. Scoop up kitfo (raw, spiced minced beef) or shiro wat (a spicy sauce of chickpea flour and clarified butter) with injera at Shegar, a well-hidden Ethiopian restaurant off Agrippas Street.

31. Carbo-load on tasty rolls from Cafe Avichayil.

32. Come winter, do not miss out on sachlab, a hot, gelatinous pudding-drink made from the root of a certain kind of orchid, usually topped with coconut shavings, nuts and cinnamon powder. Vendors in Machane Yehuda, and elsewhere in town, sell it, but the best is probably at 24-hour cafe Mifgash HaSheikh.

33. You may think Dona Fresca is only a (pretty good) pizzeria, but it also specializes in tasty little cream puffs (pictured), which you owe it to yourself to try.

34. Get a bourekas (puff pastry stuffed with cheese, spinach or potatoes) complet-style, with hardboiled egg, pickles and tehina on the side, at the 24-hour Turkish Bourekas restaurant on Jaffa Road.

35.The landmark Emek Refaim espresso bar and eatery Caffit is famed for its "Oreganato," a monstrous salad filled with fresh herbs, vegetables and local cheese. Don't miss it.

36. Try a lamb cassoulet with olives and Swiss chard at French-Med restaurant Adom.

37. Score some rare buffalo mozzarella on a margherita pizza at Emek Refaim's Luciana (pictured).

38. Eat a Basque breakfast at beautiful Rechavia cafe Restobar.

39. For an authentic Middle Eastern treat, try the lokum (Turkish delight) at one of the Muslim Quarter's sweets shops.

40. Head to an Arab bakery in the Old City for lahmajun, a sort of Middle Eastern pizza of toppings on tasty flatbread.

Testimonials

tours restaurant jerusalem

I've recently concluded a week-long tour with Ari Melnik, and words fail to express my appreciation for his prowess, intellectual depth, clever wit, and heartfelt warmth. Ari personifies everything one could ever want from a guide and even more! My husband and I, who are in our early sixties, along with our joint family of six children aged between 26 and 30, genuinely felt as though Ari had become an integral part of our family. It was truly disheartening to part ways with him once the week ended. We traversed the country from the North to the South, and Ari proved to be an inexhaustible well of knowledge. He even organized a meeting with an old acquaintance of his who is a politician. Israel boasts of many proficient tour guides who are all knowledgeable. However, Ari is indeed a unique individual who you don't encounter often. He shares his views, kick-starts the day with humor, and enjoys engaging in inclusive discussions. I can assure you that you'll be as captivated by him as we were.

I've been on several of Ari's tours and they are excellent. He is deeply knowledgeable in all things Israel. Tells great stories and provides very insightful commentary throughout. I've referred him to many co-workers for tours as well and everyone has had a great experience. I highly recommend Ari.

An outstanding guide, knowledgeable and very pleasant for trips in Israel Ari has led us on several trips in the last few months, and we have always received excellent reviews. We hiked in the mountains of Jerusalem and tasted wine while we were there. At sunset, we toured the beaches and antiquities of Caesarea with tourists from abroad. We also did a classic Jerusalem tour. There was great feedback from each group! Whenever you go on a tour with Ari, you will always learn something new, from history to local stories to connections to different religions. The fact that his English is at a native level helped all our tourist groups feel comfortable and enjoy all the walks with him. Furthermore, he's just a pleasant, fun, and welcoming person - fun to spend days traveling with him. From a logistical perspective, Ari is a gift for me! He has a solution for every situation, whether it is a concept, a route, restaurants, accommodations, or transportation. Every time I need him, he is available, flexible, and helpful. He and his services have always been of great help to me and I look forward to returning to work with him in the future.

Ari was my family's tour guide in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv for five days this past summer. He was great in every way! He planned our itinerary carefully, including everything that we were interested in seeing and then some. He made all of our hotel arrangements and was able to guide us toward amazing hotels that we absolutely loved! He was able to modify some of our plans easily when it was necessary, due to a work commitment that one of my children had unexpectedly. Ari's suggestions for activities and restaurants were impeccable. Ari was always prompt, totally reliable and always cheerful. He is unbelievably knowledgeable (about Israel's history as well as the history of the United States!), offering a depth of interesting historical details and he was always able to answer our many questions in a thoughtful way. When we return to Israel in the future, I will definitely reach out to Ari again and I recommend his services highly to anyone and everyone who visits Israel!

In May 2023, our family embarked on a meaningful journey to Israel, commemorating the Bar and Bat Mitzvah of my son and daughter. We had the good fortune to be accompanied by Ari Melnik, an extraordinary tour guide whose attention to detail made our trip unforgettable. Ari's meticulous planning was evident in all aspects of our trip. He organized everything, from our accommodation and engaging activities to delightful dining experiences. He thoughtfully scheduled our activities to avoid crowds and ensure a balanced itinerary. Each restaurant he recommended provided excellent food and a warm, inviting atmosphere. He also took on the responsibility of liaising with our Rabbi and photographer, ensuring a seamless operation of our Bar Mitzvah celebration and the overall journey. With Ari's profound understanding of Israeli history, he adeptly guided us through current political landscapes, reflections on the Holocaust, and visits to ancient religious landmarks in Jerusalem and its surroundings. Our group ranged from age 11 to 78, yet Ari successfully curated an experience that was captivating and suitable for everyone. Ari's insider knowledge and broad network allowed him to share hidden gems and unique experiences throughout our trip. Our time in Israel was truly enhanced by his guidance, and we found ourselves wishing that Ari could accompany us on all our travels. I cannot praise and recommend him strongly enough for the remarkable journey he crafted for us.

Selecting the perfect tour guide for Israel can seem daunting given the myriad of exceptional choices available. Yet, Ari Melnik stands out as an excellent candidate. He embodies the quintessential qualities of a superb guide: punctuality, professionalism, deep-rooted knowledge, and a native's familiarity with the land. In his comfortable vehicle, Ari tailors every experience to the unique needs and interests of each group member, sharing a treasure trove of insights into both modern and historical Israel. During our four-day journey, Ari curated a plethora of memorable moments. These ranged from a crowd-avoiding walking tour of Old Jerusalem to a seamless expedition to Bethlehem with our unforgettable Palestinian guide, Kamal. He also arranged for a tranquil day in the Judean Hills wine country and a riveting antiterrorism training in the West Bank, capped off with a visit to the bustling Tel Aviv food and crafts markets. Our itinerary was as expansive as it was flexible, revealing the unexpected wonders Israel had in store. A connoisseur of the local dining scene, Ari ensured our culinary experiences were just as remarkable, securing reservations at top-tier restaurants in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Considering Ari Melnik for your Israel tour is not just an option, it's a decision you'll be delighted you made.

My encounter with Exclusive Israel Tours completely exceeded my expectations! Ari thoughtfully crafted the perfect journey for our family, taking into account our unique needs and interests. His comprehensive understanding of Israel's people, its culture, and the land, combined with his amiable nature and keen sense of humor, enriched our travel experience enormously. Ari's efforts in accommodating our diverse group, inclusive of varying ages and dietary preferences, were exceptional. As a first-time visitor to Israel, the trip left me with a profound sense of attachment to the country. Ari's educational insights allowed me to truly comprehend its significance and the realities of life within its borders. While extending the duration of the trip is the only enhancement I could imagine, I eagerly anticipate a future opportunity to return and explore more of the wonders of Israel with Ari. His expertise transformed our visit into a cherished gift, revealing the miraculous nature of Israel.

The initial thing that strikes you about Ari is his profound understanding! His expertise in history and the political landscape of Israel, combined with a delightful sense of wit and a deep passion for his country, elevated our tour to extraordinary levels! It's a significant challenge to mobilize a tour bus filled with adults, teenagers, and individuals in their twenties, but Ari managed it effortlessly, ensuring we adhered to our timetable, yet also providing us with options throughout our journey. With Ari, each tour stop extends beyond the typical narratives; we accumulated a wealth of knowledge and garnered a renewed reverence for our Jewish homeland. Kudos to Ari - Truly, you are unparalleled!

Eucalyptus Restaurant

September 13th 2016

Dining at The Eucalyptus may well be one of the most memorable eating experiences you can have in Jerusalem with some of the freshest, most authentic biblical food around.

The Eucalyptus is located in the Artist’s Colony just outside the walls of the Old City in an ancient stone building with a huge scenic balcony. Come in time to enjoy the gorgeous sunsets that light the walls of the Old City each evening. You will find potted plants and wooden tables around the balcony, which is lit by spherical lights similar to Chinese lanterns. The walls are constructed from the famous Jerusalem stone. As founder, owner, and chef, Chef Moshe Basson contributes much to the ambiance of The Eucalyptus, not only with his food, but with his stories as well. The Eucalyptus is a family-owned labor of love.

The Eucalyptus menu is a modern interpretation of biblical cuisine. Chef Basson’s love of biblical culture has led him to find recipes, spices, and local and wild herbs that were part of ancient cuisine, but have been nearly forgotten over the ages. Each dish is based on biblical scenes. All of the spices and herbs used are grow in the surrounding hills of Jerusalem and Judea (as well as in the restaurant’s own garden out back), just as they did in ancient times.

Appetizers include a ceviche which combines fresh fish, seasonal fruit, cilantro and lemon; hot and crispy roasted cauliflower served in Har Bracha tahini and lemon tomato cream; and Syrian-style beef tartar with mint, red onion, lemon zest and Nablusia fries.

eucalyptus-chef-at-work

The Eucalyptus’ tasting menus are the perfect way to experience all the restaurant has to offer. The most famous of The Eucalyptus’ dishes are combined with daily chef’s specials which change according to the seasonal ingredients available. There are three tasting menus available: Queen of Sheba Feast, Shir Hashirim Feast, and King Solomon Feast.

Appetizers run between 32-62 NIS. Entrees cost between 89-165 NIS. Desserts are an additional charge.

Tasting menus run between 217-350 NIS per person. The Eucalyptus can host events of up to 100 guess in their private event hall, or up to 200 guests in an outdoor seating area. While dining at The Eucalyptus is pricey, the cuisine and location make it worth the price.
