Dance Travel Tips: Organizing Transportation to Competitions

  • words by Brandi Vickers

With competition season upon us, there’s a lot to think about – have your dancers perfected their routines? Do they have their costumes? Have you recruited some volunteers that can help out backstage? However, don’t forget to think about how your dancers will get to the venue in the first place. Organizing dance travel to a competition can seem like one big headache, but it doesn’t have to be. Follow these tips to get you and your dancers to the competition without the stress.

Check Out the Venue Ahead of Time

Prior to the competition, if possible, travel to the venue to familiarize yourself with the best route to take to get there. Also, take a look at the available parking options. This way, you can have a better idea of the best transportation method your dancers and their families should take to get to the venue, whether that’s carpooling, taking a bus or driving.

You’ll also be able to give better instructions on directions and minimize surprises the day of the competition.

If the venue is far enough away that your students and their families will need to stay in hotels, spend some time researching the area online and using Google Maps to identify the best lodging options in the vicinity so you and the parents can plan the necessary accommodation ahead of time.

Organizing a Carpool

Carpooling to the competition is a great way to streamline and simplify transportation. It’s also cost-effective, and is eco-friendly, as Dance Advantage pointed out. Make sure you leave enough time to organize the carpool – a month before the competition should be ample time.

You can use a physical sign-up sheet in the studio, or you could use online sheets or create a private Facebook group for arranging the carpool.

VolunteerSpot recommended creating a permission slip for parents to sign that affirms that the parents are alright with you taking the students out of state, if applicable, and that you have their permission to get the kids medical treatment in the event of an emergency.

In the month leading up to the competition, hold a meeting with parents – or send out an email – that outlines the details of the carpool trip like when and where the car will leave from, the route you will take, when the car will arrive and other pertinent information. Also, make sure you have all the parents’ contact info prior to heading out.

Dance Travel by Bus

While carpooling in one or a few vehicles can be an efficient and cost-effective way to get to the competition venue, factors like the distance to the event and large amounts of equipment or luggage may make renting a bus a better transportation option. Before booking a bus with a private company, make sure you do your due diligence and research.

Texas Meetings & Events magazine recommended that you book a bus early , since you can usually save money by making reservations far ahead of time. You should also have a meeting with a representative from the transportation company and ask them about the company’s insurance coverage, the experience of the drivers and their emergency protocols.

Make sure you consider the itinerary for the day of the competition – should the dancers be dropped off at a designated area near the hotel to meet up with their families first, or should the bus go directly to the competition? Taking the time to figure out the specifics of the trip will help the transportation go more smoothly.

Flying to the Competition

If the competition is several states away or on an opposite coast, it makes sense to fly to the venue. If you have just a few dancers traveling to the competition, it may make sense for each dancer to buy a ticket individually to the same flight, or for the studio to buy a batch of tickets for the dancers all at once and then be reimbursed later.

However, if you have a large group of dancers traveling, it may be a better idea to book the trip through a travel agent. U.S. News and World Report noted that agents can help large groups get discounts for flying together, so spend time looking at your options.

Other considerations include coordinating transportation to the airport, figuring out accommodation and making sure everyone is checked in on time, which is easier to do these days because of mobile apps. If you are using a travel agent, he can help lock down these details.

Also, don’t forget to consider luggage limitations. It can be helpful to give dancers a checklist of what they should bring with them. Pay special consideration to costumes, which should ideally go in carry-on because of the risk that checked luggage could be lost.

As Jayci Kalb from The Dance Centre in Alabama told DanceSpirit Magazine :

“I never pack my costume in my checked luggage. I put it in my carry-on, and it’s the first thing I pack.”

The 6 Best Dance Bags for Class & Competition

best dance bags

Are you even a dancer if you don't have a bag for dancing?! Kidding... Of course, you are! But, if you haven't gotten one yet, we're here to help!

All jokes aside, dance bags truly are necessary for dancers of all ages, levels, and styles of dance - more than you might think. Plus, they're a huge part of studio culture.

Here, we have a list of the best dance bags on the market and how to choose what's right for you.

Why Do I Need a Specific Bag for Dance?

Dance requires a lot of stuff and keeping everything organized can be a struggle.

Most dance classes happen back to back in various styles. So, in one evening, you might need leotards , hairpins, and pointe shoes for ballet class, baggy pants and sneakers for hip hop class, and heels and a skirt for ballroom class.

Then, to competitions, you're bringing a bunch of costumes, hair and makeup supplies, shoes, and accessories.

Not to mention, all these dance shoes and clothes can get pretty sweaty and pretty stinky. You'll want to make sure everything stays separate and has enough room to breathe.

Long story short, you can't use any old gym bag as a dance bag.

Types and Styles of Dance Bags

bag for dance class

What kinds of bags are there to choose from for dance? Let's take a look.

For Dance Class

A dance bag you'll use for class doesn't have to be extensive. They'll be smaller and easier to carry, with room for a few pairs of shoes and a change of clothes.

You'll want your class bag to be durable and made with quality materials since they're often the bags you'll use the most.

Plus, mesh pockets that allow your shoes to breathe will also come in handy.

For Competition

For dance competitions, you'll need something a bit bigger. After all, they'll need to fit all your makeup, costumes, shoes, accessories, and snacks for those long days and nights.

Garment bags for costumes are popular among dancers at competitions too and something with garment racks is perfect. More on those later.

Travel/Luggage Dance Suitcases

If you're serious about dance, you probably do a fair bit of traveling to conventions and competitions. Having the appropriate travel dance bag is essential.

If you're traveling by plane, you'll want to pack all your dance essentials like shoes and costumes in a carry-on sized bag that you can keep with you. You won't want to turn up to a competition without the things you need after the airline misplaced your luggage.

However, even if you're not traveling far, suitcases made with durable material and wheels are helpful if you have a ton of dance stuff for performances. So, it's something to consider.

Dance bags for children are usually smaller, a little more colorful, and a whole lot more fun. You might have your child's dance bag embroidered with their name and be sure they're not too heavy for their little bodies to carry.

Duffle Bags

Duffle bags for dance are one of the most popular styles for its versatility. Hold it by the handles or use the longer strap to carry over the shoulder.

Also, duffles often feature various compartments to keep your shoes, clothes, and hair accessories separate and organized. Plus, they offer easy access to things like your wallet to pay for classes.

Dance backpacks are another popular style as they're easy to carry around, especially if you have a full day of taking classes, moving from one room to another.

Backpacks are often healthier for the body as well since the weight is more evenly distributed. However, to get these benefits, you have to wear the backpack properly with both straps on each shoulder.

You might also choose a tote-style bag although these are probably the least popular style. They're less versatile with only the long strap option for carrying.

Plus, totes generally aren't outfitted with as many compartments as duffles and backpacks.

How to Choose the Right Dance Bag

dance bag for competitions

Now that you know what kinds of dance bags are out there, take some time to consider what actually makes one amazing. Here's what you should think about when choosing a dance bag for class or competitions.

When shopping for a dance bag, think about the purpose you'll need it to serve.

Will you be using this when you take classes or when you go to practice? Is this bag for dance competitions? Do you need a bag to hold your costumes? Will you be storing smelly shoes in this bag?

Size and Space

Bigger isn't always better and, again, it's important to understand what you really need in a dance bag.

A smaller dance bag that is easier to carry, organize, and use are better when you need a dance bag for class. Even if you have a ton of shoes and dance clothes, you can swap things out each day to only bring exactly what you need.

For competitions and recitals, however, you do need a bigger bag. There's a lot that goes into preparing for a competition or performance and making sure you have room for everything you need is essential.

Keep in mind that you may need more than one big bag for dance competitions, traveling, and big performances.

Sure, a new dance bag you've got your eye on may be durable and high-quality, but if it's super heavy, that won't really do you much good.

Go for lighter bags with soft, even meshy material versus hard, heavy bags. Pointe shoes, tap shoes, sneakers, character heels - all that weight can add up pretty quickly. Don't make things heavier with a heavy bag.

What color do you want your dance bag to be? You might think about the colors of your studio. Maybe you want a dance bag in your favorite color.

You'll be using your dance bag a lot - especially your class bag. You might want to choose darker colors that won't show dirt as much and, if you like lighter colors, save them for your competition bag.

There are certain brands that know what they're doing when it comes to dance gear like tights, dance shoes, and a proper dance bag. Top dance brands you can trust include:

Sports brands like Nike, Lululemon, and Adidas are also solid choices. Plus, your dance studio's store is likely to have some great brand recommendations. We'll share more information on our favorites below.

High-quality, durable, breathable - that's what to keep in mind for the material that best suits a dance bag.

Choose something waterproof that won't absorb odors and a bag with mesh compartments is a huge plus. Bags that are easy to clean are also encouraged.

How comfortable is the bag to carry? Are the straps built strong without putting much strain on your shoulders and hands? With that, are the straps adjustable? How does the material feel on your skin?

How a bag is designed counts for a lot. It might have all the bells and whistles, but if the design is clunky and inefficient, it could cause more annoyance than anything.

Do you prefer a bag with zippers or clasps? Do you like velcro or loathe it? Are the compartments difficult to reach? Are the pockets in an awkward spot?

Compartments

The best kind of dance bag has lots of compartments. It's helpful to have a spot for everything.

For example, sweaty shoes might stay in the outside mesh pocket. Clothes are separated from your dirty street shoes. Hairpins have a zippered compartment where they won't get lost. There's a spot for your phone and wallet.

Of course, there is such a thing as too many compartments. But it should definitely have a few to keep everything organized.

That's right. Some of the top-rated bags for dancers have clothing racks attached.

Usually starting out in a rolling suitcase-style, these bags can be transformed into a costume rack, perfect for hanging garments that you don't want to get wrinkled. The rack gets lifted out of the bag and it's a great one-size-fits-all solution.

Rolling Wheels

For particularly heavy loads, a rolling dance bag may be the answer. Often the best dance bags for competition have wheels since you'll be bringing so much with you.

Instead of handling five bags that you have to carry all at once, try one big bag with rolling wheels and your class bag for all the smaller essentials.

Embroidered and Customized

For dance studios, all kinds of dance gear may be the perfect opportunity to customize.

Feeling like you're part of the team with a custom dance bag that has your studio colors and logo is a fun way to match your friends and is a common part of dance culture.

Embroidery is also common, especially for kids and teens. When everyone from your studio has a matching dance bag, it's nice to have your name on the outside to prevent grabbing the wrong one after a tough ballet class.

Top Dance Bags

Now, with all that in mind, let's explore the best dance bags for ballet , children, adults, and competitions.

Best Dance Bags for Kids

For many dancers, it's common to have started as early as age 2. They're super tiny at such a young age so it doesn't make sense to carry around something bigger than their bodies.

Here are a few ballet bags that may be great for kids, both when they first start and as th ey get a little older.

Closet Trolley with Garment Rack

This competition dance bag starts as a large rolling suitcase and transforms into a garment rack with a large bag underneath. It's durable, sturdy, and perfect for dance competitions for years and years.

  • Made with Denier
  • Large size fits up to 20 costumes, 10 pairs of shoes, and all hair and makeup essentials

Travolution Duffel Bag with Garment Rack

Here we have another large dance bag with an attached garment rack, although this one is slightly cheaper. It's easy to use but you won't be able to fit as many items in this version. However, it's a good budget alternative.

  • Fits up to 7 costumes and all other competition essentials
  • Many compartments and pockets
  • Additional garment bags for dancers are recommended for clothes and costumes
  • Not as sturdy as more expensive versions

Best Overall Dance Bag

When deciding on the best over dance bag, we went over all the considerations one should make when attempting to make their final decision.

We're thinking about its purpose and design, size and weight, color, brand, and materials, as well as comfort, compartments , and whether it meets a dancers' ultimate needs, both in class and beyond.

Although every dance is different, we narrowed it down to the best overall dance bag.

And the winner is...

The Capezio Rock Star Duffle Bag!

We love this bag and it's clear that dancers love it too. When you break it down, this is truly one of the best dance bags for class and, although it's more on the expensive side, it's built to last.

Going through each consideration, this Capezio dance bag is a clear winner.

It serves its ultimate purpose as a high-quality dance bag with all the necessary compartments and perks. Dance teachers will love the wire port so they can charge their laptops. It works well for competitions too since you can use the sturdy hooks to hang in next to your costumes.

Its ample size gives any dancer enough space to pack what they need for class with the compartments that allow your dance stuff to stay organized, but also to give your sweaty shoes and clothes a chance to breathe.

It's lightweight and easy to carry. The black material is sleek and won't show as much wear and tear. The Capezio brand is highly respected and well-trusted, and its comfortable handles only add to the appeal.

It's designed with dancers in mind and with both zippers and clasps, you'll find that each pocket and compartment makes sense from beginning to end.

Although it doesn't have a rack attached, it may be more of a class bag than a competition or travel bag. But, it's a great companion to your bigger competition bags and can definitely be used as luggage if you'd like.

Plus, feel free to take it somewhere to get embroidered for a custom touch.

And there you have it. Our ultimate guide to choosing the best dance bags on the market. Whether you're headed to class or to nationals this summer, which dance bag will you go with? Don't leave home without it!

10 tips when traveling for a competition.

travel dance competitions

I t’s time! You’re packed and ready step out of the house and head out to your dance competition. If you didn’t yet, be sure to check out our 10 Tips on Packing for your next event . So, let’s make sure you keep these 10 TRAVELING tips in mind, that will save your bacon when going to the airport and up in the air.

1. Check In Online

With nowadays technology, almost every single Airline has an online check in option, as well as multi-platform mobile apps. Some of them even remind you that you can check in 24 hours before the boarding time. Needless to say, the apps are usually free to download.

2. Bring an empty bottle

No one ever got stopped with an empty water bottle (metal, glass or plastic). You can always ask to get filled up at the bar, most major airports have water fountains. Not to mention, it’s financially and environmentally friendly.

3. Spread the Cash

Are you keeping all your money in you wallet when you travel? So, what are you gonna do if (Oh God, Please NOOOO!) it gets stolen? It’s good to keep cash in different areas – the inside of your computer bag, your carry-on luggage. Some people get so creative, they roll their cash-stash into an empty lip balm container. Neat!

4. Wet Wipes

It’s good to have wet wipes with you not just to freshen up your own self, but to disinfect and freshen up the surrounding area of your seat, such as: arm rests, tables and a head rest (Thats is if the seat is leather, of course)

5. Grab a Jacket

Sometimes a blanket is just too big, and most airlines that fly local don’t even offer blankets on board. A light to medium jacket should serve you well as a back support (when rolled and placed behind your lower back, and as a blankie when you get cold.

6. Bring your favourite Fuzzy Sockies

Why sit in your tight shoes when you can sit just like at home – comfy and warm! Oh and, fuzzy warm sockies will definitely bring your mood up!

7. Don’t forget your Hat

As we have established, it can get cold on the plane. Bringing in your hat won’t just keep your head warm in cold conditions, but also will create a comforting barrier between your head and the publicly used head rest. Did we mention that your hat could also be used as an eye mask?

8. Travelling Pillow is your neck saviour!

Neck is probably the most fragile part of the body, especially when you decide to take a quick nap on the plane. Since we – the dancers, usually fly to a competition on the budget, and the economy seats are not the most comfortable, it is good idea to invest into a good traveling pillow. There are numerous brands of traveling pillows out there, but we would definitely recommend the ones that are firm, filled with memory foam, and can keep support your head when you snooze.

9. Come to the departures to grab a cab to your next destination

Sometimes, when a lot of flights come in at the same time, there are not enough taxi to take on the strong from of the arriving passengers. But, if you go to the departure area, you will probably get lucky with the incoming flow of departing passengers, and grab a cab from there … line-up free.

10. Use an ATM to get the best rate in currency you desire

Hopefully you have notified your credit card company that you will be traveling, because if you didn’t, after a single ATM withdrawal, you will probably have your credit card blocked. When the ATM asks which currency to charge you in – In the Eurozone – Euros. In Sweden, Swedish Krona. In Britain, Pounds. Always, always, always choose to be charged in the local currency of the country you’re in. Don’t let the machine do your currency conversion.

Groups are welcome to find their own accommodation (at their own expense) if preferred. Groups that are not staying on Cockatoo Island/Wareamah will be responsible for their own planning and travel to Sydney Opera House.

Through the generosity of private supporters, the Sydney Opera House is able to provide a dedicated DanceRites Travel Assistance Fund. This fund is for dance groups from rural, remote or regional areas who would not otherwise be able to travel to Sydney to compete in DanceRites without funding assistance. The fund provides assistance when groups have secured other financial support. Please let us know if you would like to apply for this.

Go team! National cheer, dance championships return to Daytona's Bandshell, Ocean Center

travel dance competitions

On the sidewalks, in the hotels, restaurants and grocery stores, cheerleaders soon will be seemingly everywhere at the World’s Most Famous Beach.

More than 10,000 students on cheerleading teams and dance units representing more than 470 colleges and universities nationwide will arrive by midweek in Daytona Beach to compete in the College Cheer and Dance National Championship sponsored by the National Cheerleaders Association and the National Dance Alliance.

That represents record participation for an event now unfolding for the 28 th year in Daytona Beach, said Bill Boggs, senior vice president of the National Cheerleaders Association.

The three-day championship event that runs Thursday-Saturday, April 11-13, at the Daytona Beach Bandshell and the Ocean Center is expected to attract roughly 25,000 spectators, also a record turnout, Boggs said. Spectator tickets range from $28-$73 at varsity.com or showclix.com .

“The popularity of the event has continued to spread across the country,” he said. “Teams want to be a part of what they have seen on television and what they hear about from the other teams that have experienced the event.”

Championship expands to include more teams

In addition to the interest sparked by the Netflix documentary series “Cheer,” which followed a college team from Texas on its path to the Daytona Beach event through two seasons in 2020 and 2021, the championship’s format has been expanded to encourage more teams to participate, Boggs said.

This year, a new Spirit Rally division showcases teams in routines that more closely resemble skills used on game days rather than the elaborately produced and choreographed shows typically presented at the event, Boggs said.

“There’s not the complicated routines, the choreography, the development of competition music,” Boggs said of the new division. “Basically, you’re using your own school’s music and you’re doing the same types of performances that you would do at games.”

After nearly three decades in Daytona Beach, the appeal of the destination itself has become part of the event’s popularity, Boggs said.

“It really has become synonymous with the event,” he said. “We do competitions all over the country and there’s really no other venue like Daytona Beach.

“Of course, there’s the beach itself and the oceanfront Bandshell, which has become iconic with our event. Plus, with the Ocean Center right across the street, it’s convenient from an operational standpoint. There are beautiful hotels like the Hilton, and now the Daytona Grande.”

Despite hotel concerns, event renews commitment

This past summer, the organization signed a new agreement with the county-run Ocean Center to return to the destination for another three years, despite a struggle to find enough hotel rooms in the area to accommodate teams at the 2023 event in the wake of damage left behind by back-to-back tropical storms Ian and Nicole.

As last year’s event approached, well over 100 teams had been unable to find hotel rooms.

In case you missed it: Thousands of cheerleaders arrive at Daytona, but lack of hotel rooms an issue

That situation has improved this year, Boggs said. Still, the fact that the 323-room Plaza Resort & Spa, within walking distance of the Ocean Center, remains closed for repairs and renovations has complicated the process of finding the needed accommodations, he said.

“Hotels continue to be one of our biggest challenges as our event continues to grow,” Boggs said. “Last year, we had 150 teams that did not have hotel rooms for. This year, the event grew by a little more than 10%, and we only had 50 teams that didn’t have rooms to accommodate. That’s an improvement.”

Teams will be utilizing 35 hotel partners in the area as well as charter buses that will provide city-wide transportation, said Lori Campbell Baker, executive director of the Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

“As the list of competition teams continues to increase, the CVB’s sales department has been reaching out to more and more hoteliers to help place those room nights,” Baker said. “Hotels in the core area are booked solid, and with more than 12,000 rooms here in the destination, we have the capacity to expand in all directions.”

That room demand stretches from Port Orange to Ormond Beach, as well as westward toward hotels around Daytona International Speedway, Boggs said.

The impact has been significant at hotels owned and operated by Ormond Beach-based Elite Hospitality Inc., said Manoj Bhoola, president and CEO.

Elite’s roster of area hotels includes the Best Western Plus International Speedway; Hampton Inn by Hilton Daytona Speedway Airport; and the Hilton Garden Inn at Daytona Beach International Airport.

“We expect the cheer and dance championships to once again help us hit capacity for our 388 rooms across our three Daytona Beach hotels,” Bhoola said. “This annual event has grown to be citywide, and continues to help the entire region, including all the restaurants and attractions.”

At One Daytona, across the street from the Speedway, the event also will generate sold-out rooms at both the Daytona Marriott Autograph Collection hotel and the Fairfield Inn & Suites, said Nancy Guran, director sales for both hotels.

It’s a similar story at hotels owned and operated by Ormond Beach-based Premier Resorts & Management, said Domien Takx, vice president of operations.

Premier properties include Hilton Garden Inn; Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites; and the Best Western Daytona Inn Seabreeze; all in Daytona Beach; as well as the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, Daytona Beach Shores.

“This annual citywide event is a great room-demand generator and helps us sell all available rooms for the four-night period, Wednesday through Saturday,” Takx said. “This is another example of how special events really assist our destination throughout the year.”

Across the street from the Ocean Center, the event also will pack the 744-room Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort, the event’s host hotel and the area’s largest, said Jim Berkley, general manager.

“The event is a complete buyout of our hotel over their dates,” Berkley said.

Just north on Atlantic Avenue, the arrival of nearly 500 cheer and dance teams also is welcomed by the landmark Starlite Diner, a gleaming silver fixture just a short stroll from the Ocean Center.

“Cheerleaders love to eat,” said Kevin Gelnaw, the diner’s co-owner. “It’s really fun. Those kids put out a lot of energy. I enjoy I when they come. It’s just another great event that keeps the ball rolling until the summer really kicks off and the families and other tourists come to town.”

American Flag Canceled at Seattle Dance Competition After Patriotic Team 'Triggered' Crowd

Members of a Seattle-based country line dance team were left stunned after being told to change their costumes because their American flag-themed shirts made attendees feel "triggered and unsafe."

The Borderline Dance Team says they have experienced a gamut of emotions from "outrage to sympathy to disbelief" after being invited to perform at the Emerald City Hoedown in Seattle, this past weekend.

According to a post from the group on Facebook, they had been asked to perform at the convention for the last three years but were unable to make it until this year.

The dance group accepted the invitation and were excited to take part in it.

"Dance teams work their boots off preparing for performances like these. Extra practices, babysitters, ferry rides, hours upon hours of practice, and commute time and time away from their families. We all were very excited to perform for this event," they wrote on Facebook.    When the group arrived in their American flag shirts they were told by the Rain Country Dance Association, an LGBTQ+ dance community, that their stars and stripes made a small group of attendees uncomfortable.

"They had several claims for this reasoning. Mostly associated with the situation in Palestine and the Trans community in America," the Borderline team shared.

"At first we were told we would just be booed, yelled at and likely many of them would walk out. This did not deter us. But then we were given an ultimatum," they added.

According to the dance team, they were given the option of changing their outfits, which was impossible because some dancers did not bring another set of clothing, or wear mismatched shirts that were not a part of their brand.

"Or, don't perform at all, which effectively was asking us to leave," Borderline wrote on Facebook.

The team's co-captain Lindsay Stamp told The Jason Rantz Show on KTTH that only a "small percentage" of attendees were upset about the shirts, but her entire team was heartbroken about the ultimatum.

"My team doesn't take a political stance. We came to dance," she explained.

The team shared that they were not the only ones who received a complaint.

Another dance team, West Coast Country Heat, also wore patriotic-themed shirts and were given the same ultimatum.

"Our friends, West Coast Country Heat, who were also scheduled to dance for the convention that evening also did not perform as they too proudly don the colors of our country in the same spirit of patriotism that we do," the post said. "Both of our teams stood in solidarity and put actions to words."

Despite feeling essentially forced to leave the venue, the dancers from Borderline see the "silver lining" as both teams banded together for "the greatest performance."

"These people are strong, resolute, and unwavering in their patriotism," the Borderline Dance Team said. "They are the families and friends of people who have suffered the unimaginable so that we may all have our own opinions and sleep soundly in our beds at night. That is why we wear the colors. Because although we may not always agree with the current state of things, we recognize that being an American means true FREEDOM."

"We all understood and accepted this and walked out with class and dignity despite the discrimination we had experienced," the post added.

The group's board president, Ziadee Cambier, later clarified and said the group was not asked to leave the event.

But Stamp told Rantz she disagreed.

"It's pretty clear to me, there's always room for error in any situation, but I don't believe so," she said.

Borderline Team encouraged their followers to "never find yourself in a position where your freedom truly is taken from you."

"May you always have the choice to agree or disagree with whatever situation you find yourself in. And may you always protect someone else's freedom to do the same. Whether it be in your favor or not," they wrote.

The “ Jet Lag: The Game ” creators Sam Denby, Ben Doyle and Adam Chase have set their next reality travel competition series, “ The Getaway ,” to debut this summer on indie streamer Nebula .

The show, which unlike “Jet Lag” (where episodes drop later on YouTube) will be available exclusively on Nebula, follows six creators on a road trip through the American West as they compete in a game of social strategy and deception.

Popular on Variety

Though it’s from the same team that makes “Jet Lag: The Game,” “The Getaway” is a separate project from that travel competition series, which just concluded its Switzerland-set ninth season. Season 10 of “Jet Lag,” which will take place in Australia, is already in the works.

Denby, who is also chief content officer at Nebula, will executive produce “The Getaway” alongside Nebula CEO Dave Wiskus and vice president of production Trenton Waterson. Denby will direct, with Doyle and Chase heavily involved in production. Valentina Vee is serving as DP.

“The Getaway” is among several originals recently picked up as part of Nebula’s 2024 programming slate.

“’The Jet Lag’ team told us they had an idea, so we greenlit it,” Wiskus said.

“We’ve been working on this show for the better part of a year so it’s extremely rewarding to see it coming together,” Denby added. “We’ve taken everything we’ve learned from producing ‘Jet Lag’ to the next level to create an exciting new spin on a travel competition series that viewers won’t want to miss.”

Members of a regional women’s country line dance team said they were effectively kicked out of a Seattle dance convention after organizers claimed their American flag-themed shirts made some attendees feel “triggered and unsafe.”

The Borderline Dance team was invited to the Emerald City Hoedown in Seattle this past weekend. They said the organizers, the Rain Country Dance Association (an LGBTQ+ dance community), have been inviting them to come to its dance convention for years and they were finally able to accommodate. But when they arrived this past Saturday at the event, they said they didn’t get the greeting they were expecting.

The dance team was wearing matching shirts themed around the American flag. But for some in the crowd, it was one step too far. And it ended up effectively canceling their performance.

Why did dance troop in American flag attire upset Seattle dance attendees?

Co-captain Lindsay Stamp, in an exclusive interview with The Jason Rantz Show on KTTH, said the outfits sparked a “small percentage” of complainants who brought up Israel’s war against Hamas and transgender issues. It shocked members of the team who were only there for about 30 minutes at the time.

“My team doesn’t take a political stance. We came to dance,” she explained.

Stamp said the team wears American flag-themed outfits to show their patriotism, not make a statement about politics.

“We’re a patriotic group. We support our military, our veterans, our first responders. We’re a group of patriots,” she said.

But she said someone from Rain Country Dance Association, while cordial, offered what she called an ultimatum.

“At first we were told we would just be booed, yelled at and likely many of them would walk out,” the Borderline Dance team said in a statement on Facebook . “This did not deter us. But then we were given an ultimatum. Remove the flag tops and perform in either street clothes (which most didn’t bring as they traveled there in their uniforms) or they would supply us with ECH shirts from years past… Or, don’t perform at all, which effectively was asking us to leave. ”

The team’s commitment to patriotism explains why the women unanimously agreed — they weren’t removing their American flag t-shirts. And they weren’t alone.

“Our friends, West Coast Country Heat, who were also scheduled to dance for the convention that evening also did not perform as they too proudly don the colors of our country in the same spirit of patriotism that we do. Both of our teams stood in solidarity and put actions to words,” the Borderline Dance statement said.

Rain County Dance Association hints at the controversy

The Rain Country Dance Association did not substantively respond to requests for comments.

Instead, a representative said “Rain Country is in the process of reviewing the details of the matter and reaching out to those directly involved. Our organization is committed to our core values of inclusivity and respect, and we will release a more comprehensive public statement later in the week.”

On its Facebook page, they made a similar comment.

“Hi y’all! After the close of another amazing Hoedown weekend, we know there are some questions about the Saturday night performance line-up. We appreciate y’all giving us the time to clear up misunderstandings and address the situation with people directly involved. We will be posting a follow-up statement later this week once we are able to have those conversations,” it said.

As of Tuesday, Stamp said no one from the Rain County Dance Association had reached out.

Was this all a misunderstanding?

In a Facebook comment, board president Ziadee Cambier didn’t get specific on the outfit controversy. But she said Borderline Dance team members weren’t asked to leave.

“We will be in continued communication with the captains of the dance teams that were slated to perform Saturday. To clarify, as this was not a competition, no one was disqualified and no one was asked to leave. While we are mending our relationships directly with the dance teams we will be disabling comments on this post. We will be sharing more information later this week, to hopefully clear up any misunderstandings,” she wrote.

Stamp told The Jason Rantz Show on KTTH that she doesn’t think there was a miscommunication: “It’s pretty clear to me, there’s always room for error in any situation, but I don’t believe so.”

The silver lining

Stamp said that while the situation was upsetting, she and her teammates were pleased that community members showed so much support since the team went public.

“I was more taken aback by the issue with our shirts than anything else. I think that the whole team was pretty shocked … we didn’t even think that would be an issue. And like I said in my (Facebook) post, the silver lining was that we had so many people that showed so much love and so much respect. And really, this is just such a wonderful community and these are great, great people.”

She called it “unfortunate” that such a small group of people were uncomfortable with their American flag-themed shirts. It would have been a worthwhile opportunity, she believes, to start a meaningful conversation about their discomfort in a way that could bring people together — like dance conventions intend to. The co-captain said she hopes this can be a learning experience for everyone.

“I would just love to see more conversations opened about people accepting one another. About being wholly inclusive. You know, every, group of person talks about being inclusive and accepting. And I think that we need to work on being inclusive and accepting of people outside of our immediate comfort zones. I would love to see that,” Stamp told The Jason Rantz Show on KTTH.

Zaha Hadid Architects among competition winners for new Moscow Metro Stations

By alexander walter |.

travel dance competitions

The two-stage international competition , initiated by Moscow Metro development program operator Mosinzhproekt JSC, had previously narrowed down the field of design submissions to five finalists per station. The jury, chaired by Andrey Bochkarev, Deputy Mayor of Moscow in the Moscow Government for Urban Planning Policy and Construction, then determined the two winning projects for implementation.

Klenoviy Bulvar 2 by Zaha Hadid Architects (London, UK) in collaboration with A-project, Krost (Moscow, Russia); Arup Lighting (London, UK); Systematica s.l.r (Milan, Italy)

"Zaha Hadid Architects offers a next-gen look for the Klenovy Bulvar 2 station, with special design methods that impact the passengers’ perception of the station in unprecedented ways," explains the project description. "Elegant, weightless, transparent, full of light, and clean lines – the station will provide comfort and reduce the stress associated with living in a metropolis. Lighting is one of the project’s essential elements: the dynamic system of regulating the light’s tint will help announce an incoming train. A bright space with tall ceilings and smooth pillars, designed to look like arrow heads and blending into trails of light to reflect three-dimensional motion, allow for the station to be kept well-lit and visually indicates the platform edge."
