WEATHER ALERT

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

Florida blames key biscayne-virginia key traffic nightmare on amount of cars, warns ‘disruption’ is inevitable, florida department of transportation re-opens flyover bridge on monday after closing it on sunday.

Andrea Torres , Digital Journalist

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – After a traffic nightmare on Sunday left drivers from Key Biscayne to Virginia Key and Hobie Island stranded for hours, drivers accused state and local authorities of poor planning.

To explain what happened and what was being done to prevent it from happening again, the Florida Department of Transportation released a long statement on Monday afternoon.

“This project will inevitably cause disruption to typical travel patterns for commuters,” Tish Burgher, of FDOT, wrote about the “rehabilitation” of the flyover bridge that connects Rickenbacker Causeway drivers heading inland to Interstate 95 northbound and U.S. 1 southbound.

Also, “the work is part of a rehabilitation project to the bridges which are nearly 50 years old and is imperative to the structural integrity of the bridges and the safety of the traveling public,” Burgher wrote.

Burgher, the communications manager for the FDOT District 6, which covers Miami-Dade and Monroe counties, claimed the department’s employees believed “all appropriate factors” were used to develop the traffic plan they were “re-evaluating” on Monday.

The FDOT employees blamed Sunday’s traffic crisis on “the volume of vehicles” that “overwhelmed” their traffic plan. The solution: The department decided to re-open the flyover bridge on Monday after the closure on Sunday caused traffic delays at the entrance of Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park.

The flyover bridge partially re-opened on Monday . Traffic from the Rickenbacker Causeway to the ramp connecting to Interstate 95 was flowing, but not to the ramp connecting to U.S. 1.

SUNDAY TRAFFIC

Drivers reported the Sunday afternoon and evening into late night traffic on Crandon Boulevard to the Rickenbacker Causeway stretched from two to over six hours. Attorney Naomi Nevy Garcia used Facebook to air her grievances.

“This isn’t just a detour or delay! My family including 3 young children have been stranded for nearly 4 hours in the car near Bill Bags state park! This is a total disaster,” Nevy Garcia wrote. “It’s past 11pm right now and the traffic is backed up all the way from 95. Horrible traffic planning!”

Brian McNody and Quinton Lawton, both University of Miami researchers; Andrew Hazelton, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientist; and Quinton Lawton, a University of Miami researcher, used X to demand a solution to the problem.

“If this continues as is, I can’t see how businesses and schools on Virginia Key and Key Biscayne will even function,” Lawton wrote. “This is untenable.”

Alissa Rae Miller, a personal trainer living with hypoglycemia, was among the drivers who used Instagram to vent about their nightmare after leaving Crandon Park, which has a beach, golf course, tennis center, and marina. There were also drivers from the beach parks in Virginia Key and Hobie Island.

“I was shaking, sweating, and disoriented around 7 and almost passed out,” Rae Miller wrote on Instagram. “I had my last of my coconut water and carbs but I never expected this ever in my life. This is not OK. This is a death trap.”

With the flyover bridge closed Sunday, the Rickenbacker Causeway drivers who had waited had only one option. They had to turn left toward Brickell Avenue in Miami where there was more traffic. The project’s planners had announced it was going to last about two months.

“The Department is re-evaluating the traffic management plan to maintain safety, while also ensuring the continued movement of people and goods from Key Biscayne to the mainland,” Burgher wrote in the statement released on Monday afternoon.

Key Biscayne Mayor Joe Rasco, Police Chief Frank Sousa, and Fire Chief Eric Lang told The Key Biscayne Independent on Sunday the traffic had caused problems for the village. The Islander News reported: “ A Key Biscayne Sunday traffic horror that will live in infamy .”

Rasco released a statement on Instagram and Facebook. His promise: “We will fight to regain reasonable access.”

The FDOT also announced that by “Wednesday morning, the southbound lanes will fully reopen to allow time for the installation of guardrails today and tomorrow. While this installation occurs, surface streets should be utilized.”

Read the complete FDOT statement:

Yesterday, FDOT began work on the Rickenbacker Causeway flyover bridges in Miami-Dade County. While the original maintenance of traffic plan was developed with all appropriate factors considered, it was overwhelmed with the volume of vehicles ingressing and egressing from Key Biscayne yesterday. The Department has heard and understands the community’s concerns and, based on the feedback we’ve received, has taken prompt action as follows:

Today, the Department has re-opened northbound lanes of the Causeway flyover today.

By Wednesday morning, the southbound lanes will fully reopen to allow time for the installation of guardrails today and tomorrow. While this installation occurs, surface streets should be utilized.

The work is part of a rehabilitation project to the bridges which are nearly 50 years old and is imperative to the structural integrity of the bridges and the safety of the travelling public. While this phase of work was expected to last approximately 2 months, the Department is re-evaluating the traffic management plan to maintain safety, while also ensuring the continued movement of people and goods from Key Biscayne to the mainland.

Moving forward, the Department will continue coordination with local officials, including local law enforcement, on revised traffic management plans and signalization coordination. While this project will inevitably cause disruption to typical travel patterns for commuters, the Department reinforces our commitment to workshopping any revised plan with community stakeholders prior to being implemented.

Kennedy Expressway reopens near O'Hare Airport after protest snarls traffic, leads to delays

"solid traffic" backups were reported as far as i-90, total traffic reported, published april 15, 2024 • updated on april 15, 2024 at 6:20 pm.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked traffic on Monday morning along the Kennedy Expressway near O'Hare International Airport, resulting in significant backups and prompting some travelers to exit vehicles and walk to terminals.

The protests at O'Hare, which were among multiple across the U.S., resulted in multiple arrests, according to Chicago police. An exact number was clear as of Monday afternoon.

All lanes of the Kennedy Expressway were blocked between Bessie Coleman Drive and the airport as of 8:25 a.m., with solid backups reported to Interstate 90, an alert from Total Traffic stated. In an update at 9:35 a.m., Total Traffic reported that the interstate had been reopened from "earlier police activity," but solid traffic backups remained.

According to alerts from the Chicago Department of Aviation, the protests “substantially delayed” travel around the airport, with travelers urged to find other forms of transit.

"They’ve got a right to protest, but they shouldn’t have a right to shut down a whole airport like this," one traveler said.

Passengers abandoned their taxis or rideshares and walked to the airport, dragging their suitcases to try to catch their flights. Others diverted to the Transit and Rental Car Facility to catch the tram to the terminals.

Not only did passengers miss their flights, the protest also impacted those landing who missed their rides to meetings and appointments.

"It's a cluster to be honest with you," another traveler commented. "I’m not missing my flight. I got in, but I'm missing appointments.”

While Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communication sent out an alert, urging travelers to take the CTA Blue Line to avoid traffic from the protest, it was too late for some.

"It's wrong," a traveler said. "I hope the protestors are put in jail. The cause may be right. There’s two sides to every situation. But it’s not the way to do it. They’re not gaining any fans."

After the eclipse, exodus of drivers could create a path of gridlock

Eclipse traffic has officials bracing for congested highways and flight delays on april 8.

travel disruption roads

Planning to stake out a good spot to view the total solar eclipse next month? You won’t be alone — and officials are warning that the massive public interest could lead to hours of standstill road traffic, airspace crowded with leisure and commercial pilots, and disruptions at a host of airports.

The Federal Aviation Administration has warned that air traffic delays are likely on April 8, when the eclipse will sweep through North America from Mexico to Canada and plunge a narrow path into complete darkness in the middle of the day.

2024 total solar eclipse

travel disruption roads

On the roads, federal authorities are asking for the public’s help to avoid gridlock across several states.

“While an estimated 32 million people live within the path of totality, millions more will travel to see the event firsthand,” Shailen Bhatt, administrator of the Federal Highway Administration, said in a video message . “This rare event may be a once-in-a-lifetime for some, but could have widespread impacts on the traveling public. So please: Plan ahead to arrive early, and, if you can, stay put to avoid traffic congestion.”

Around the last total solar eclipse to reach the United States, in 2017, motorists clogged roadways along the path in multiple states immediately after the show. Citing INRIX, a firm that analyzes transportation data, AAA said that some rural routes experienced more than 15 hours of congestion, with backups stretching for up to 70 miles.

Kathleen Bangs, a spokeswoman for the flight-tracking service FlightAware, said she drove to a field in Nebraska for the last eclipse.

“Oh my gosh, the traffic,” she said. “Once the eclipse ended, we thought it would take five hours to get home. It took like 11.”

Some cities have been planning for an influx of visitors for more than a year before the upcoming eclipse. Some local governments in Texas have declared a state of emergency ahead of time; the declaration for Bell County, an area north of Austin that is bisected by Interstate 35, says officials expect the local population of some 400,000 to “double, if not triple, in size” in the days leading up to the eclipse, creating “extreme traffic congestion” and a strain on local resources that threatens the safety of local residents.

Landowners who are hosting events for 50 or more people are required to register with Bell County, and officials are encouraging locals to stock up on gas and groceries well before the eclipse.

The state of Oklahoma is warning residents of longer emergency response times, potential disruptions to cell coverage and overwhelmed roads.

AAA recommends bringing camping chairs to an eclipse-viewing spot and hanging out, “much like after a concert,” until the early wave of departures has ended.

“Fill up right before the eclipse so you have a full tank in case you get stuck in traffic,” the organization says. “Have an emergency kit prepared with extra water, snacks, first-aid kit, and phone charger.”

During the last eclipse, air traffic operations increased between 23 and 36 percent around some major centers, according to a 2017 report from the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.

One airline has added flights designed to follow the path of totality, while others have highlighted existing routes expected to have a high-level view of the eclipse. Bangs, a former airline pilot, said the anticipated spike in air traffic is more related to smaller, privately owned or rented planes.

“A lot of those people are going to go out and fly that day to see the eclipse,” she said.

The FAA is asking airlines and pilots to plan ahead and file a preferred route to help reduce delays, and to monitor notices and temporary flight restrictions. In its notice , the agency says planes should be prepared to potentially be rerouted or put in a holding pattern. Some activities, such as practice approaches, touch-and-goes and pilot training operations, may not be allowed.

It’s not just planes that might be affected, the FAA warned.

“There may be a higher traffic volume than normal anticipated at airports along the path of the eclipse,” the agency said in its notice . Roughly 450 airports of various sizes and uses are considered close to the path. It added: “Parking may be limited — particularly at the smaller, uncontrolled airports.”

Massive winter storm causes travel issues and power outages in parts of the U.S.

David Schaper

A widespread winter storm is dumping snow and causing freezing rain though large parts of the United States, leading to travel disruptions and some power outages.

TAMARA KEITH, HOST:

There's a winter storm the size of which is rarely seen, and the gusty winds, heavy snow, rain and freezing rain is affecting millions of people in 25 states. Thousands of flights are canceled, many roads are impassable, and hundreds of thousands of people are without power. From Chicago, NPR's David Schaper reports.

DAVID SCHAPER, BYLINE: Snow plows and salt trucks are out in force from Texas to Maine as a massive winter storm wreaks havoc all the way from the Southern Plains into the Northeast.

ANDREW ORRISON: This is a very large winter storm. We're talking about tens of millions of people that are being impacted by winter weather hazards.

SCHAPER: National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Orrison.

ORRISON: It's everything from heavy snow to areas of heavy sleet and freezing rain, so you're getting a lot of ice accumulations and also the very cold temperatures. And we've seen a lot of cold air just in the last couple of days kind of pull across the Northern Plains and the Midwest area, and that's been funneling down to the South.

SCHAPER: Driving conditions across a huge part of the country's midsection are dangerous. In the St. Louis area, snowplow drivers are having a hard time keeping up as strong and gusty winds whip the light snow into drifts and completely cover roads just minutes after they're plowed. Amie Bolin-Lacey got stuck on Interstate 74 in central Illinois while trying to take her sick dog to the vet.

AMIE BOLIN-LACEY: There's a bunch of semis in the ditches. The wind's starting to pick up, which is blowing. And the ice - or the roads are super icy. And so it's just - us going that slow, it's crazy how the winds push at us.

SCHAPER: In Wisconsin and elsewhere, there are reports of rare winter tornadoes. By early this afternoon, airlines had already canceled nearly 5,000 flights. Kathleen Bangs of the flight tracking firm FlightAware says that's the most weather-related cancellations in one day since Hurricane Sandy a decade ago.

KATHLEEN BANGS: The airlines saw this coming way in advance, and so they really had time to prepare. And the difference we're seeing is that they've cancelled their flights preemptively.

SCHAPER: And Banks says that's actually good news for would-be air travelers compared to other recent airline meltdowns.

BANGS: We're seeing empty terminals. We're seeing terminals right now where there's nobody instead of what we saw some of these other times, which were thousands of stranded passengers sleeping on top of mountains of luggage.

SCHAPER: As of early this afternoon, more than 250,000 people across the country were without power, more than half of them in Tennessee. In Texas, utility crews have been working around the clock to avoid the devastating, widespread outages seen last winter. Jen Myers is with Dallas-based electricity provider Oncor.

JEN MYERS: It's really an all-hands-on-deck situation. Our linemen are out there working 16-hour shifts 24 hours a day, so there is always someone out there restoring power all across the area.

(SOUNDBITE OF SIREN BLARING)

SCHAPER: The treacherous conditions are slowing down first responders and making it more difficult to get to those in need of assistance. But a winter storm of this magnitude isn't all bad.

UNIDENTIFIED PERSON: Ready? Go.

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: (Screaming).

SCHAPER: At Gompers Park on Chicago's northwest side, some families are taking advantage of the freshly fallen snow to go sledding. Tammy Torok is one of the parents venturing out in the bitter cold.

TAMMY TOROK: I got to say I was debating about staying home, not going to lie, especially with two kids and trekking with two sleds and a stroller and everything. But, you know, it's Chicago winter. You're going to stay home every single day? You just can't (laughter). Kids need to have fun.

SCHAPER: But to the southeast and northeast of here, winter storm advisories and warnings remain in place, and bitter cold temperatures in much of the country could keep all of this snow and ice around for a while.

Flooding on the A82 great western road in Glasgow on Saturday.

Storm Kathleen: Scotland hit by high winds, heavy rain and travel disruption

Flood and wind warnings remain in place, with Sepa warning of ‘real danger to life’ on coastal roads and paths

High winds and heavy rain from Storm Kathleen persisted through Sunday, battering parts of Scotland and Ireland and disrupting travel.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) had 18 regional flood alerts and 37 flood warnings in place in Scotland. They have been in force since Saturday.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow wind warning from 9am on Sunday covering parts of the west and northern Highlands, the Isle of Skye and the Hebrides. It will remain in force until 11:59pm.

Winds as high as 73mph were recorded in Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire.

A previous warning stretched from the Scottish Borders to just south of Stirling. It spanned the west coast, throughout much of central Scotland, and ended just short of the east coast.

Janine Hensman, Sepa’s flood duty manager, said: “Across Sunday, we’ll continue to see high tides, storm surges and large waves across coastal areas. This combination is particularly dangerous – especially around high tides. There is real danger to life from wave overtopping, particularly around causeways, coastal roads and paths.

“While the risk is greatest around high tide times, our message is clear: Take extra care if you are near the coast at any point and stay well clear of waves and water. Be careful when travelling around exposed coastal areas and don’t walk or drive through flood water, as there may be hidden hazards.”

She added: “Whilst Storm Kathleen will ease on Sunday evening, another weather system is on the way. Significant flooding from rivers and surface water is possible in southern, central and north-eastern areas on Tuesday, with coastal flooding continuing due to high spring tides.

“Flood alerts and warnings are in place, so stay up to date though our website. We will continue to work with the Met Office to monitor the situation 24/7 and review regional flood alerts and local flood warnings as required.”

The Met Office has warned of potential power cuts, damage to buildings, poor mobile phone coverage and danger to life because of large waves and debris from beaches being thrown on to seafronts. About 34,000 people were left without electricity on Saturday, with a few thousand customers remaining without power overnight, but by Sunday afternoon almost all had had their supply restored.

CalMac, Scotland’s largest ferry operator, cancelled a number of its services and many other ferries were operating on reduced timetables, while others faced potential disruption.

ScotRail also faced a number of disruptions throughout the day, including to its Helensburgh Central and Dumbarton Central services.

However, the services, according to ScotRail, were “starting to return to normal”.

On Saturday, more than 140 flights throughout the UK were cancelled as a result of the storm.

In Ireland, a girl was swept out to sea from the east pier of Dún Laoghaire harbour in County Dublin on Saturday evening. Rescuers were able to pull her out of the water within eight and a half minutes, with a lifeboat volunteer revealing that pockets of air trapped under her coat helped keep her afloat before the rescue.

Andrew Sykes, a volunteer helm with the RNLI, told PA Media that the stormy conditions made the rescue operation difficult.

“With the high winds and storm we were experiencing, with large waves and surge coming off the pier, to get alongside her was extremely difficult,” he said. “She would be pushed one way and we would be pushed another,”

The girl was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Titanic Belfast was forced to close after strong winds damaged part of its roof on Saturday. However, the yellow wind warning covering Donegal, Mayo and west Galway was lifted at 4pm on Sunday.

Christmas Day Chaos: Drivers face travel disruption on roads

Friday, December 24, 2021 Favorite

travel disruption roads

The drivers face travel chaos on the busiest day on the roads today as Brits take five million trips before Christmas Day.

Brits will be caught in “frantic festive Friday” traffic as they embark on trips to spend Christmas with friends and relatives after the Covid-19 rules forced many to miss out on visits 12 months ago.

The research from the RAC and data firm INRIX expects Christmas Eve to be a “frantic festive Friday” – with a massive 5.3 million car journeys made on December 24 alone.

And major roads will be at their busiest between 11 am and 2 pm, according to RAC analysis.

Although demand for rail travel is at around 50 per cent of pre-pandemic levels, thousands of people are travelling by train to spend Christmas with loved ones.

The Christmas Eve rush will be most intense between the A303 at West Solstice Park and the A36, the RAC and INRIX warned.

Boris Johnson said that Christmas could go ahead lockdown free as he reassured panicked Brits they’d be able to spend time with their loved ones. CrossCountry is warning it will run a “very limited service” today and on New Year’s Eve due to strikes by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT).

The firm will not operate any trains on Friday between Aberdeen and Edinburgh; Glasgow Central and Edinburgh; Derby and Nottingham; Leicester and Stansted Airport; Cheltenham Spa and Cardiff Central; Newton Abbot and Paignton; or Plymouth and Penzance.

The hundreds of trains have also been cancelled across Britain due to pandemic-related staff shortages.

There was also disruption today on West Midlands Railway services between Birmingham New Street and Redditch due to a fault with the signalling system.

A similar issue in Hampshire also caused delays on the south coast between Havant and Portsmouth Harbour for those using Great Western Railway, South Western Railway and Southern services.

Some 370 engineering projects are being carried out on the railways in the coming days, which will also disrupt services.

The Heathrow Airport will be cut off from the rail and Tube network on Christmas Day and Boxing Day due to Network Rail and Transport for London doing simultaneous work.

Inrix analyst Bob Pishue has suggested leaving later in the day as roads will begin to clog up during the early afternoons.

He said that the kids out of school and many Brits taking extended time off for the holidays, drivers can expect moderate delays around the UK, but heavier congestion on motorways in and out of the cities.

Leaving later in the day is recommended, as roads will begin to clog up during the early afternoon.”

The AA’s head of roads policy Jack Cousens told that the influence of Omicron is now being felt, so our breakdown stats have stayed reasonably low as people decided to cancel events and not travel.

That said, Thursday and Friday could be busy as people take the decision to see their family others for a shorter period – two to three days as opposed to a week or so.

The rapid surge of Omicron has caused chaos on public transport as major train stations have been eerily quiet as staff shortages cancel trains and cautious workers choose to work from home and avoid public transport.

The train operators have seen a significant drop in passengers following the PM’s work from home order – with Greater Anglia even removing trains from its timetables due to plunging numbers.

Rail passengers have been urged to check train services before they travel amid concerns of disruption caused by surging Covid-19 cases.

FAA issues warning to travelers amid omicron surge: Delays will continue

The agency is dealing with rising cases among air traffic control employees.

The travel chaos continues for an eighth consecutive day Friday, with more than 1,600 U.S. cancellations as of 8:30 p.m. ET. The airlines have been grappling with the one-two punch of bad winter weather and a surge in crew COVID cases that have left them short-staffed, and forced airlines to cancel nearly 10,000 flights since Christmas Eve.

Now the Federal Aviation Administration is warning of staffing issues of its own, such as sick air traffic controllers. In addition, the FAA warned on Thursday that weather, holiday traffic and COVID-19 "are likely to result in some travel delays in the coming days."

"Like the rest of the U.S. population, an increased number of FAA employees have tested positive for COVID-19," the FAA said in a statement. "To maintain safety, traffic volume at some facilities could be reduced, which might result in delays during busy periods."

MORE: A week of travel woes: More than 8,000 flights canceled since Christmas Eve

The travel turbulence couldn't have come at a worse time as millions of Americans travel during what could be the busiest travel period since the start of the pandemic. Roughly 8.5 million fliers are expected to pass through U.S. airports from now until Jan.3, according to estimates from the Transportation Security Administration.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport has been hit particularly hard this week -- holding the No. 1 spot for the most cancellations in the world for three days in a row. Denver International took its place on Friday morning, topping the list with more than 250 cancellations.

Carriers are trying to proactively cancel flights to give travelers time to rebook.

PHOTO: A family works through check-in at Alaska Airlines ticketing after dozens of flights were listed as cancelled or delayed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (Sea-Tac) in Seattle, Dec. 27, 2021.

JetBlue Airways, which has seen sick calls in some departments up 200-300% more than average, canceled more than 1,200 flights over the next few weeks.

"We expect the number of COVID cases in the northeast -- where most of our crewmembers are based -- to continue to surge for the next week or two," the airline said in a statement. "This means there is a high likelihood of additional cancellations until case counts start to come down."

Delta Air Lines is already planning to cancel 200 to 300 daily flights for the upcoming weekend, citing "increasing winter weather and the omicron variant."

United said Friday it would pay pilots triple their salary for picking up extra flights, according to a letter acquired by ABC News. United canceled more than 200 flights on Friday. Spirit Airlines, which had canceled 99 flights as of Friday night, announced it would offer double pay to flight attendants through Jan. 4.

MORE: New CDC isolation guidance may ease COVID-related flight cancellations

JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes told CNBC Thursday that the new guidelines are definitely going to help, but that "the size of the problem really is just the number of people contracting it."

"Things are likely to get worse before it gets better," he said.

London travel news LIVE: M25 and M26 chaos after three-vehicle crash with traffic also backing up on M20

LIVE – Updated at 09:14

Traffic chaos has hit three motorways following a three-vehicle crash on Tuesday morning - which shut the M25 and M26 in Kent and Surrey, and left traffic tailing back for miles on the M20.

A 20-mile section of the M25 and M26 were shut following the crash, which involved a lorry and two cars and happened around 3am.

The M25 was shut between junctions 5 at the M26/Sevenoaks and 6 at Godstone, and the M26 between junction 2 at Wrotham, to where it meets the orbital.

The roads have now reopened and traffic has largely eased, but remains heavy on the M20, A20 and A2 leading into London.

Traffic monitoring system Inrix warns there are “long delays” in the area.

The crash is reported to have involved two cars and a lorry.

Meanwhile trains between London Liverpool Street and Chingford are cancelled after an object became caught on overhead wires between Walthamstow Central and Wood Street, blocking the line.

As a result, trains are currently unable to run between Liverpool Street and Chingford.

The Overground is partially suspended as a result, with National Rail reporting that disruption is expected until at least 11am.

Follow latest updates below.

Key issues affecting travel this morning

  • M25 and M25 shut after three-vehicle crash
  • 'Major disruption' affecting Stansted Airport and London trains

London Overground part-suspended

  • M25 chaos causes heavy congestion on key roads into London

Traffic easing on M25 and M26

The M26 has now reopened as well as the M25, according to traffic monitoring system Inrix.

Congestion appears to be easing in the Surrey area, but is still affecting the area around Dartford.

Heavy traffic is also still queuing on the M20, A20 and A2 heading into London.

M25 chaos causing congestion on A roads leading into London

Heavy traffic is queuing on major arterial roads leading from Kent into London, following this morning’s three-vehicle crash on the M25.

There are “long delays” on the A20 Swanley Bypass, heading towards the capital from where it meets the M20. There are also queues of traffic backing up on the M20, towards the M25.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix warns there are also “long delays” on the London-bound A2, both on the approach to the M25 and after it meets the orbital.

Traffic chaos affecting huge area of M25

This morning’s motorway chaos in Surrey and Kent is affecting the M25 as far as around 30 miles away, near Brentwood in Essex.

An image from traffic monitoring system Inrix shows the scale of the issue, with congestion represented by a red line.

M25 reopens but long delays continue

The M25 has now reopened between junctions 5 and 6 following this morning’s crash, but National Highways warns drivers should still expect 45-minute delays.

Congestion is tailing back to junction 3 at Swanley.

Severe delays on bakerloo line.

There are severe delays between Stonebridge Park and Harrow and Wealdstone on the Bakerloo Line this morning, due to signal failure.

There are minor delays on the rest of the line due to a shortage of trains.

There is no London Overground service between Hackney Downs and Chingford this morning, due to an obstruction on the overhead wires at Wood Street.

M25 and M26 closed following crash

A 10-mile stretch of the M25 is closed clockwise south of London this morning due a crash that is thought to involve two cars and a lorry.

There are severe delays. The road is shut clockwise from junction 5 M26 / A21 (Sevenoaks) to junction 6 A22 (Godstone).

Congestion is tailing back to junction 3 M20 Swanley Interchange, down the A21 Link to the A25 at Sevenoaks, according to traffic monitoring site Inrix.

It says the M26 has also been closed westbound from junction 2 at Wrotham, to the M25, following the crash, which happened in the early hours.

In total, around 20 miles of the M25 and M26 are shut.

'Major disruption' affecting Stansted Airport and London train services

Major disruption is affecting a number of train services this morning, operating to and from Stansted Airport.

Lines have reopened following fallen tree on the overhead electric wires near Roydon yesterday, but National Rail says trains may still cancelled or delayed until 9am.

Routes affected are:

  • Greater Anglia services between London Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport / Cambridge North, and between Stratford and Bishops Stortford
  • Stansted Express services between London Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport
  • CrossCountry services between Birmingham New Street and Stansted Airport
