While there’s no direct train from Barcelona to Andorra, you can take a train to L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre and then a bus to Andorra. This option is a bit more time-consuming, usually taking around 4-5 hours so might be slightly long if you’re planning a weekend trip from Barcelona , but it’s a scenic journey.

The train part offers stunning views of the countryside and the Pyrenees. This option is ideal for those who love train travel and don’t mind the extra transfer.

Each option has its own charm and benefits, so consider what’s most important for your trip – time, budget, or the overall experience.

What to do in Andorra

1. església de sant esteve (church of st stephen).

This charming church in the heart of Andorra la Vella is a must-visit. The Església de Sant Esteve is notable for its Romanesque architecture and serene atmosphere.

The stone structure, dating back to the 12th century, stands as a testament to Andorra’s rich history. Inside, the artwork and the altar are beautifully preserved. It’s a peaceful spot, perfect for some quiet reflection.

2. Casa de la Vall

Casa de la Vall is a historical gem. This 16th-century manor house once served as Andorra’s seat of government.

The blend of history and architecture here is fascinating. The exterior, with its defensive towers, gives a glimpse into its past, while the interior features historical artifacts and traditional furnishings.

Don’t miss the Council Chamber, with its wooden benches and historic emblems – it’s like stepping back in time.

3. Seven Poets’ Statues

Located in the picturesque Plaça del Poble, the Seven Poets’ statues are a tribute to Andorran culture and literature. Each statue represents a significant poet in Andorran history.

For all the shopaholics out there, Andorra is a paradise, thanks to its duty-free status. Pyrénées Andorra, located in the capital, is the most famous department store in the country.

Here, you’ll find everything from high-end brands to local products at great prices. Electronics, perfumes, clothing, and chocolates – you name it, they’ve got it.

The variety is impressive, and the savings can be substantial compared to prices in Spain or France. It’s a great place to pick up gifts or treat yourself without breaking the bank.

6. Pont de París (Paris Bridge)

With two to three days, you can comfortably visit landmarks like Casa de la Vall, spend time in the thermal spas, and explore the city center without feeling rushed.

If you’re visiting during winter, extra time is especially beneficial for enjoying the ski resorts. Likewise, in warmer months, you have the chance to take on some of the beautiful hiking trails.

While a day trip offers a glimpse, a longer stay allows you to experience the relaxed pace of life in Andorra, enjoy the cuisine, and maybe even venture into some of the smaller villages for a more authentic experience.

When is the best time to visit Andorra from Barcelona?

Andorra is a small, landlocked country located in the Pyrenees mountains of western Europe. It is bordered by Spain to the south and France to the north. 

Though it may be small compared to its neighbors, Andorra has plenty to offer visitors looking for a unique holiday experience.

The history of Andorra dates back more than 1000 years when Charlemagne declared it an independent buffer state in the Middle Ages. It was done to defend France from the Moors.

Later, a fuel charter (Paréage of Andorra) was signed in 1278 which allowed for joint rulership of Spain and France. This arrangement lasted until 1993.

Today, Andorra is an independent nation and it is one of the few surviving small nations or microstates in Europe .

Andorra has been an important strategic location throughout its history and is currently known for being one of the most tax-friendly countries in Europe. 

This makes the principality an attractive destination for both businesses and individuals looking to take advantage of its favorable tax policies.

Andorra is not a European Union member nor do they follow the Schengen agreement. And there are no airports or train systems in Andorra!

All travel into Andorra requires transit via neighboring France or Spain. 

Barcelona to Andorra Distance and the BEST way to get there

Our very first trip to Andorra was in the fall, and we visited the Principality from Barcelona Spain . The nearest big city to Andorra is Barcelona, and from the French side, it is Toulouse. 

The shortest travel distance between Barcelona and Andorra la Vella is 199 km (123.6 miles).

Traveling from Barcelona to Andorra is a popular and convenient journey for those looking to explore the beautiful Pyrenees. 

There are multiple ways to get to Andorra which we will list below, but for a day trip, we recommend either driving there or taking guided tours.

Barcelona to Andorra by Car – Fastest

Traveling by car from Barcelona to Andorra is probably the most convenient way to get there. The journey takes about two and a half hours, depending on traffic. 

There are a few routes that you can take (AP-7 with a toll fee and A2 without a toll from the airport), and you can also extend it as a day long road trip. 

When driving to Andorra, make sure you have all necessary documentation such as a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and your passport or identity card.

Before you pick up a rental car in Barcelona, you have to meet these requirements,

• You have to be at least 21 years of age
• Carry a valid driver’s license for at least one year,

Yes! You need an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) before driving a vehicle and entering the Andorran borders via car.

Barcelona to Andorra Bus – Cheapest

Traveling by bus is another popular way to reach Andorra, and it is also one of the cheapest options. However keep in mind the journey takes around three to four hours, depending on traffic, with stops along the route. 

There are 2 bus companies that run on a regular basis throughout the year. One of them is AndBus and they are based in Andorra la Vella. You can book tickets online here on Busbud.com

We use Busbud when we book bus tickets from Canada. We have found tickets for 12 USD (or 17 CAD) on some days for the Barcelona to Andorra bus route. 

So if your travel date is flexible you can save money here

Another option is to book on ALSA, which offers several trips daily. Tickets start at $30 USD and they cover Barcelona to Andorra la Vella. 

If buses are the only option for you, then we recommend departing early morning, so that you can explore the capital city and nearby areas and then return by 07:00 pm. 

You can catch a ride from the Barcelona El Prat airport or Estació Nord bus station. In three hours you will arrive in Andorra la Vella. Here you can either walk to major attractions or use public buses to get to places. 

ALSA is a Spanish company and you can book and manage tickets on their website. Their coaches are comfortable with a variety of amenities such as Wi-Fi, and air conditioning, making the journey more enjoyable. 

You can travel by bus from Barcelona to Andorra la Vella and it will take about 3 hours (the fastest).

Barcelona to Andorra Train 

Unfortunately, there are no trains operating from Barcelona to Andorra. If you wish to use the train from Spain, here are a few options for you

Barcelona to Andorra Train Time is 5 to 6 hours, one way. You can take the train from Barcelona to Girona (arrive in 35 minutes), and then take a bus from Girona to Andorra la Vella via Manresa (arrive in around 5 hours 32 minutes).

There are trains available from Barcelona to get you closest to Andorra. Zaragoza is the nearest Spanish city to which you can ride the high-speed Renfe trains. They operate every day except Sundays and take about 2 hours to get there.  Then from Zaragoza, you have to drive or take the ALSA bus to Andorra. The bus takes anywhere from 4 to 5 hours, one way. 

There are no trains going into the country. But a short drive away (11 km or 7 miles), you will find the nearest train station to the Andorran border –  L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre.  As a major hub for southern French cities such as Toulouse, this station is serviced frequently by trains from all over France.

Barcelona to Andorra by Taxi or Uber

Although taking a cab or taxi from Barcelona to Andorra la Vella will be expensive it is still an option for you. Travel time is about 3 hours.

For a taxi ride from Barcelona to Andorra expect to pay 300 to 350 euros.

Yes, Uber operates in Andorra, and you can use one for getting around in the country.

Things to do in Andorra on a day trip

Once you arrive in Andorra la Vella, start by exploring some of the cultural attractions, followed by a stroll at the city centre or park. And before leaving the principality you can enjoy duty-free shopping.

A lot of the sightseeing stops below are super quick and you can easily skip the shopping, and museum visits if you are strapped for time. 

We recommend checking off the churches, the shopping district, and the statues 100%! 

1. The Santa Coloma Church 

A renowned Cultural Heritage of Andorra, the Church of Santa Coloma d’Andorra is the oldest church in the country. 

The church is dedicated to Columba of Sens who serves as its patron saint.

Santa Coloma Church stands as a testament to centuries of history and culture. It was originally constructed in the 8th century as a Romanesque fortress but has since been turned into a captivating Gothic masterpiece. 

There is a small museum located at the church which is worth exploring. 

2. Saint Esteve Cathedral 

The awe-inspiring Església de Sant Esteve or Church of Saint Stephen is a renowned landmark in Andorra. 

Believed to have been established between the 11th and 12th centuries, this Romanesque church stands as one of the oldest constructions in all of Andorra.

During the 20th century, drastic changes were made to the church. As part of these renovations, many mural paintings from the building were sent off to Catalonia National Art Museum in Barcelona and two private collections.

You can visit the church for free. 

3. Casa de la Vall

Casa de la Vall is a 16th-century estate that was traditionally the location of Andorra’s Parliament – Consell General. It provided the seat for all governmental affairs in this small country.

Today, it is open to the public and offers a fascinating look into Andorran history. You can marvel at the impressive architecture of this grand estate and learn about past events that helped shape Andorra into what it is today. 

The entry fee is about 5 euros. 

4. Poets’ Statues

In front of Andorra’s Commune administration building stands a magnificent set of sculptures, known as ‘7 Poets’. These statues symbolize the seven parishes that makeup Andorra.

After taking a few pictures, you can head over to one of the museums. 

5. Museums (optional)

Spend some time exploring the local museums and galleries in Andorra. We only recommend adding this to your list for the day if you are renting a car as some of the museums are located outside the city centre. 

The Postal Museum aka Museo postal de Andorra, located in Ordino is a specialty museum that focuses on the evolution of mail services in Andorra. 

Museu Casa d’Areny-Plandolit (in Ordino) is another one. The casa or the house showcases furniture and household items from the 17th century to the present times. You can go on a guided tour and later enjoy a stroll in the gardens.

6. City centre stroll

Take a stroll through the historic old town of Andorra La Vella. Here you can find plenty of interesting shops, restaurants, and cafes to enjoy. 

7. La Noblesse du Temps or The Nobility of Time

La Noblesse du Temps or The Nobility of Time is a bronze sculpture created by Salvador Dali.  It stands in the center of Andorra La Vella at Plaça de la Rotonda and is a popular local landmark. 

The sculpture consists of three figures symbolizing the passing of time. A stroll around this beautiful piece of art is an absolute must.

8. Check off Pont de París

A short walk from the sculpture is a small bridge called the Pont de Paris. This captivating bridge crosses over the Valira River in Andorra la Vella. 

Stop by the bridge and snap a few photos before heading to the next attraction. 

9. Sign off for the day at Parc Central

Make your way to Parc Central next. This is a green park located in the capital city. Enjoy a nice walk/stroll before making your way back. 

In the late evening, there are structures that are illuminated inside the park making it all beautiful!

10. Finish your day with shopping in duty free stores (and dinner)

Andorra is a shopping paradise with many luxury boutiques located in its capital city of Andorra La Vella.

The Principality is home to duty-free malls in Europe and is a great place to find luxury items at discounted prices. 

You also have the option of visiting traditional markets where you can purchase locally-made handicrafts, food, and clothing. 

After shopping, bid adieu to Andorra la Vella with a lovely dinner at one of the many restaurants (if time permits). 

From traditional Catalan cuisine to international dishes, there is something to please everyone’s palate here. Make sure you try the famous cured meats, which are some of the best you’ll find anywhere in Europe. 

With so much to explore in Andorra La Vella, a day trip here will certainly be an unforgettable experience!

This beautiful mountain range north of Barcelona is a great spot for a day trip if you want to get out of the city. Here, you can take scenic hikes through the mountains and explore the Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat.

Carcassonne, France: 

Just two and a half hours away by train (or 3 hours by car), you can explore the walled city of Carcassonne in a day. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has preserved its medieval architecture and provides a glimpse into the past. 

You can tour La Cite, the main attraction, as well as enjoy some delicious French food and wine in one of the many restaurants!

Girona, Spain:  

Girona is located about an hour and a half away from Barcelona and makes for a great day trip. Visit the old town to explore the cobblestone streets and admire the ancient architecture before stopping by one of the many cafes or restaurants for a drink or bite to eat!

Best Time to visit Andorra

As one of the smallest countries in Europe, Andorra has become a popular destination for tourists from around the world. 

But when is the best time to visit this beautiful country?

Winter (December-February) is the most popular time to visit Andorra, especially for those looking for a winter wonderland experience. The ski resorts in the Pyrenees are world-class and offer some of the best skiing and snowboarding opportunities in Europe. 

Temperatures can reach as low as -10°C during these months, so bundle up warmly before heading out. The festive season is also an excellent time to visit Andorra, with a number of traditional markets appearing throughout the country.

The summer months (July-August) are also a popular time to visit Andorra due to the mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine. During this period, you can expect average daily highs of around 25°C and night-time lows of 14°C. 

The sunshine makes it ideal for spending time outdoors, enjoying activities such as hiking, biking, or swimming in one of the many lakes and rivers.

Travel Tips & FAQ: How to get from Barcelona to Andorra Guide

Andorra makes for a perfect day trip from Barcelona to visit a different country altogether. Set aside 2-3 hours for transportation time (one way), and then 6+ hours for sightseeing and shopping time in Andorra.

Technically yes. You can enter Andorra without a Schengen visa as they are not a European Union or a Schengen Area member. However, you will need a valid passport to enter the sovereign state.  Depending on your nationality you may need a Schengen Visa to enter either France or Spain as Andorra is landlocked and access to the country is through these EU countries.

Andorra has no visa requirement to enter the country. But due to its location, and being bordered by Spain and France you will need a visa to enter those countries and then make your way to Andorra. 

The border control at Andorra–Spain border is located between La Seu d’Urgell and the parish of Sant Julia de Loria (in the Valira Valley).

For entry to Andorra, you do need a valid passport for the proposed duration of your stay.

Barcelona Airport to Andorra will take approximately 3 to 4 hours.

There are local buses available in the capital city of Andorra la Vella. Buses are cheap, and you can buy a daily or a weekly pass.  You can also pay by ride when visiting Andorra on a day trip.  Bus service is operated by Andorran Bus Lines, and there are six distinct routes that link all major towns in the Principality with one another. 

Is it worth going to Andorra from Barcelona?

Is a Day Trip from Barcelona to Andorra Worth It? (2024)

I’ll be honest, a day trip from Barcelona to Andorra is ambitious, and you’ll likely be exhausted by the end. But, I also wholeheartedly believe that giving yourself the opportunity to experience a completely new country and environment is worth paying $60 – $250 USD.

For me, visiting Andorra was literally and figuratively a breath of fresh air. I know that sounds dramatic, but if you want to travel at a slower pace and immerse yourself in the great outdoors then Andorra is just what you’re looking for.

With all the towering verdant mountains, fresh crisp air that’s untainted by mass pollution, and the general tranquility of a less populated area, it was like paradise. I could not stop smiling while wandering around.

That said, I can recognize that Andorra is not everyone’s cup of tea. For example, if you thrive in big city environments, such as Geneva , Lyon , or Paris , then you might find yourself a little more bored since Andorra doesn’t have as many specific attractions to see.

However, if you’re ready for a break from the chaos and noise of Barcelona and to travel off the beaten path, then I absolutely think Andorra is worth visiting.

How Do I Get From Barcelona to Andorra?

Depending on what route you take, Barcelona is about 125 miles or 200 km from the capital, Andorra la Vella. And to traverse this distance without having to navigate it yourself, there are two options.

By Private Tour

The easiest and most comfortable option is to go on a private tour. On a private tour, you won’t have to worry about finding your way or trying or researching the meaning behind everything you see.

Your second option is to take a bus from Barcelona to Andorra. This option is the cheapest option and allows you more freedom while visiting Andorra.

However, the caveat is that you’ll be limited in terms of time spent in Andorra. This is because you’ll need to keep the return bus schedule in mind. Thus, you could end up spending only about 6 hours in Andorra and equally as long of time on the road… That’s unless you opt to spend a night or two in Andorra.

Can You Drive a Rental Car From Barcelona to Andorra?

It’s definitely possible to drive a rental car from Barcelona to Andorra. However, speaking as someone from the US, there are certain rules and qualifications that must be met to rent in Spain. Some of the requirements include: being at least 21 years of age, having a valid driver’s license for at least one year, a valid ID (passport or state-issued ID), an International Driving Permit , and proof of residency.

What Is the Best Way to Travel to Andorra?

My honest opinion is that the best way to travel to Andorra from Barcelona is with a private tour with Antonio . You will be able to make the most of your limited time and it’s simply the least hassle-free. Plus, he’s just a fun character who brings a lot of entertainment to the journey. 🤠

That said, I know private tours can be expensive, so it’s fair if you take the bus route option. Just know you’ll be tight on time.

8 Things to Do on a Day Trip to Andorra

Alright, now that you have a pretty decent idea of how to get to Andorra, you may be wondering what to do during your visit.

If you’re traveling there independent of a private tour , here’s my list of 8 things to do in this charming country! These are all either free or very low cost, so you can keep trip costs to Andorra down. 😉

🏔 NOTE: The activities in the order I would complete them if you’re arriving at the Andorra la Vella bus station . This will help you save time and energy in unnecessarily traversing the city.

1. See 7 Poetes

When you arrive at the Estació Nacional d’Autobusos (bus station) in Andorra la Vella, you want to make your way to Barri Antic. This is Andorra’s Old Town or Old Quarter. It’s where you’ll find a couple of the more historic buildings in the area, similar to Stockholm’s Gamla Stan . On your way there, you’ll pass by an art installation in front of the Commune administration building on your left called, ” 7 Poets.” As you can likely guess, the name comes from the fact there are 7 yellow statues of poets. Each poet is on a pedestal raised above the ground at a different height. The symbolism behind this piece is that they are meant to represent the 7 parishes of Andorra: Andorra la Vella, Escaldes-Engordancy, Sant Julia de Lòria, Encamp, La Massana, Ordino, and Canillo. They serve as an integral example of the country’s appreciation for public art. And if you visit at night, you’ll see them lit up!

2. St. Esteve of Andorra Church

The next stop is the picturesque St. Esteve of Andorra Church, one of the more prominent landmarks in the city. This Romanesque church dates back to the 12th century, but it was quite heavily restored during the 20th century. As such, there are only pieces of the original church that still remain. These include the semicircular apse, part of the walls that make up the nave, and another smaller apse. Within the church, you’ll discover that only a few balls adorn the walls. This is because some of the murals and paintings that used to be there are now being preserved in the Catalonia National Art Museum. That said, one important piece remains, the Painting of the Souls, which is from the 18th century.

And while it’s the largest church in the principality, it’s still a small fraction of the size and grandeur of churches you’ll find in Milan or Paris — so walk in with an open mind!

3. Casa de la Vall

After seeing the church, make your way to the iconic Casa de la Vall. This is located about a 2-minute walk away. The historical house was built in 1580 as the home of the Busquets family. However, in 1702, the General Council of Andorra bought the home and it became the seat of parliament from 1702 – 2011. Check out this post if you want to learn more about Andorra’s unique position between France and Spain ! From the outside, you’ll notice there’s a large outdoor terrace providing an impressive 360-degree view of the Pyrenees Mountains. This is also where you can catch a nice view of the 7 poets from above.

Additionally, visitors can opt to take a guided tour of the inside to learn more about the history of the building and Andorra. Tickets for the tours are €5 per adult or €2.50 for students and senior citizens — so quite affordable! The historic house is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 AM – 2 PM and from 3 PM. – 7 PM.

🏔 FUN FACT: A picture of Casa de la Vall is what depicts the face of an Andorran 1 Euro coin.

4. Feast on Delicious Food

When you’re done viewing the Casa de la Vall, it’s time for the part of the day that most people seem to leave out — feasting time! After all, no trip would be complete without trying out the local food ! For those who don’t know, Andorra is known for its hearty and savory dishes. One of the country’s most popular dishes is Escudella — a stew made with meat, potatoes, and pasta shells seasoned with various herbs and spices. And the best part about Andorra’s cuisine is that it tries to use locally produced ingredients. Therefore, they often have rotating menus depending on what’s in season! Unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of the restaurant I went to with great Escudella. But, I do remember and recommend eating at MuaKaBo and La Casa Restaurant & GastroBar . These are both located in the Old Quarter area and close around 3:30 – 4 PM until the dinner time shift. So, unless you want to walk up the hill again, you’ll want to eat lunch before you leave the area!

5. Pyrénées Andorra

In the introduction, you may recall I mentioned that Andorra is well known for its duty-free shopping. With this in mind, it likely comes as no surprise that Andorra’s economy is mostly propelled by its finance, retail, and, tourism sectors. As such, you’ll find lots of department stores to browse through around the central parts of Andorra. In particular, the Pyrénées Andorra is one of the most notable stores. It’s right around the Old Quarter area and home to a wide array of shops! Thus, it’s a great place to go for tax-free shopping, especially for those who may be interested in saving on designer brands!

6. Noblesa del temps

When you’re done shopping or at least ready to move onto another area where there are more stores to window shop at, make your way to Plaça de la Rotonda.

Here, you’ll find Noblesa del Temps, which translates to Nobility of Time . It is a surrealist bronze sculpture by the world-famous Catalan artist Salvador Dalí.

The sculpture features a melting clock resting against a sparse tree and angels adorning each side. You’ll notice it’s quite reminiscent of Dalí’s most well-known work, The Persistence of Memory, and repeats similar motifs.

7. Pont de París

Directly behind the Noblesa del Temps is the Pont de Paris (Paris Bridge), an aesthetic suspension bridge. I don’t know why it’s called the Paris Bridge, but it ironically reads “Andorra la Vella” in big letters on the front.

It’s not really worth crossing the bridge, but I do recommend spending about 2 minutes to take a picture with it in the background. This can be a nice little souvenir photo to commemorate your visit to the 6th smallest country in Europe! Plus, when I was there, they even had a little stand that you could put your phone on to help you take a picture if there’s no one around or you don’t feel like asking someone to take your photo!

Oh! And if you stop by during the nighttime, you likely won’t have to deal with the swathes of crowds and can enjoy the view of the “Andorra la Vella” letters all lit up!

8. Parc Central

For the last bit of the day, you can either wander along Meritxell Avenue, the most popular street in Andorra. It’s lined with hotels, shops, restaurants, cafes, etc. There’s also a French and Spanish post office if you’d like to send off a couple of postcards to loved ones… Or, if you’re ready to give your feet a break and want to just take in the surrounding scenery, a few minutes walk away from Plaça de la Rotonda is Parc Central. This is a well-maintained park that’s not far from the bus station. Public bathrooms are available and there’s lots of grassy space and some playgrounds if you happen to be traveling with little ones. Personally, I chose to take a nap under a tree as it was so peaceful and pleasant listening to the La Valira river water flow. But, if you aren’t one for lying on the ground (understandable lol), there are also benches and some artwork to check out around the park! Just make sure you begin slowly walking back to the bus station about 30 – 40 minutes before it’s supposed to leave! No one likes being stranded in countries! 😅

Best Time to Visit Andorra

As I mentioned earlier, Andorra is known for an array of things — some of which are seasonal activities. Therefore, the best time to visit Andorra depends on what your interests are and what you hope to do!

For instance, if you’re mostly interested in hiking and sightseeing around the city then late May – October is ideal for a visit to Andorra! You can expect temperatures that range from about 50 °F to a nice 75°F during this time — perfect for exploring on foot.

And, of course, to avoid any tourist crowds, you’ll want to head over during shoulder season — September and October. But, honestly, even in peak summer months, you probably won’t see a lot of tourists outside of the main downtown area.

Meanwhile,  if you’re keen on skiing, snowboarding, and other winter activities, visit Andorra between December – February. This is when the ski resorts are flourishing with activity and fresh snow.

In the event you decide to spend a night or two as I did, here are a few of my recommendations on where to stay in Andorra based on my experiences and outside research. These are just for Andorra la Vella since that’s where I stayed and the general area where I spent most of my time!

Barcelona to Andorra Day Trip: FAQ

I fully think Andorra is worth visiting. It was a welcomed contrast from all the large cities I had previously been traveling through. However, if you’re still unsure, I have a dedicated post on who I think would enjoy visiting Andorra and who should probably skip it.

Since Andorra is located high up in the Pyrenees Mountains, there is no train from Barcelona to Andorra. The bus is the only public transportation option.

The most hassle-free and easiest way to get to Andorra is with a private tour. Whether it’s the tour to only Andorra or a tour through Spain, Andorra, and France , both allow you to sit back and enjoy the ride!

Via private transport (car), the ride from Barcelona to Andorra is about 2.5 hours. In contrast, it takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes with the bus, assuming minimal traffic.

Yes, there is border control between Spain and Andorra. However, you don’t have to stop when traveling from Barcelona to Andorra unless you’re specifically asked to.

Andorra’s official language is Catalan. However, both French and Spanish have been influential in the region for centuries so many locals speak these languages too. But, I also noticed that most locals understand at least basic English phrases and you can communicate with a bit of patience!

Barcelona to Andorra By Car – Scenic Drive You Didn’t Know About

We have just returned home to Tenerife after our unforgettable journey to the Pyrenees mountains a nd I had to take a moment to sit down and write a post about our trip from Barcelona to Andorra by car where we had a little adventure that I didn’t expect would be so memorable.

It was a long-awaited vacation which I packed with many activities for each day and since we had a car with us we wanted to road trip and see as much as possible which was quite easy to do as the mountains itself, Andorra, and the entire stretch of the drive between Barcelona and Andorra were quite spectacular.

If you are interested in seeing (and getting inspired) what our trip through the Pyrenees mountains was like, you can do this through my other posts. But here, in this article, I solely want to talk about our road trip between Andorra and Barcelona.

Many people cover this distance by bus or even by car taking the highway (and partially toll road) C16/N-260, not considering another route B23/C55/C14 which in total is 20 km longer than C16/N-260 but in my experience more interesting.

We decided to choose it to drive from Barcelona to Andorra and made many stops along the way. I am sharing them below and you pick which ones you like more to tailor your own road trip adventure between these two awesome destinations!

You can also use it as an Andorra to Barcelona by car itinerary but in that case, you will need to readjust the driving schedule as some points of interest that are closer to Barcelona close early.

In the end of the article, I also include a map but only with major points of interest. Keep in mind that there are other sites that are not on this map but under each section in detail.

Things to Consider Before Going on Barcelona to Andorra Drive

Mark and I started this road trip from Barcelona airport which helped us save some time on getting out of the city. I advise you to do the same for convenience. If you plan to be in Barcelona , at first spend time in the city (without renting a car) and then go in the morning/afternoon (of that day when you plan to drive to Andorra) to the airport to pick up a rental car.

The distance between Andorra and Barcelona via B23/C55/C14 roads is around 210 km (130 miles) but there is no way you can cover all the stops in this post in one day. Drive on its own is easy and will take you around 3-3.5 hours without detours.

But if you want to visit some hidden gems along the route and actually see more of Spain , you need to have at least one full day (preferably during the season with more sunlight in the day).

It took us 2 full days to cover everything and have an overnight stop on the way (I mention it below) but we devoted 2 weeks to the Pyrenees region, which allowed us to move slowly. 

If you are on a shorter trip, obviously driving such a short distance during 2 days may be too much. So again, just pick the most interesting places from this list and have your own adventure.

NOTE : If you are thinking of going on a Barcelona to Andorra day trip, I do not recommend you make stops on the way at all. Because Andorra is a jewel of its own which deserves at least 3 full days. To be honest, I wouldn’t recommend going on a day trip to Andorra from Barcelona at all because this country has too much one day can fit in.

If you do want to see Andorra and a few sights on the Spanish side, then I recommend you devote 2 days to this trip . Go on Barcelona to Andorra drive using this post, then spend a night in Andorra la Vella (capital city), devote the following day to Andorra country (with a car you can drive all over it within the short period of time) and leave to Barcelona late at night (via toll road).

For the car hire, from my experience, I can recommend you rent a car from Centauro company . They have not only reasonable prices for car rental but also the lowest price for border crossing.

Every car rental company in Barcelona charges money for a border crossing to Andorra (and France including), so with Centauro you save. Plus, the company is more relaxed in terms of car damages. While other companies try to charge for even the smallest scratch, Centauro has a more forgiving policy. But if you purchase full insurance, then of course it doesn’t matter.

If you do want to rent a car in Barcelona with insurance, do so from DiscoverCars as their policies are the cheapest.

Where to Stop for the Night Between Barcelona and Andorra 

Technically speaking – you can drive one full day to Andorra and see quite a lot from this list. But realistically speaking – get ready that you won’t be able to stop everywhere. There are just too many activities for one day.

So if you want to take it slower as we did and experience cozy stays in the Spanish Pyrenees while driving to Andorra, I can recommend the following places including one nice hotel on a budget in Andorra. Here they are and here is why they are my top picks:

• Bremon Boutique Hotel (heritage hotel with the view of the castle, the one I discuss below)
• Parador de Cardona (stay in a castle itself, haunted rooms are available for rent as well, ha!)
• Hotel Restaurant Cal Petit (hotel between the hills in a relaxing setting for those who plan to sightsee a lot)
• Yomo Mola Park (my top choice hotel in Andorra la Vella, best for those who want to visit the Thermal Center)

Barcelona to Andorra Road Trip & Best Stops to Make 

La colonia güell.

Colonia Güell is a lesser-known place near Barcelona with one of the beautiful and unique works of Antoni Gaudi.

It is basically an industrial village of textile workers (back in the day) of the magnate Eusebi Güell who was a patron and one of Gaudi’s customers. He commissioned the renowned architect to design various elements of the complex but only one was finished which was the Crypt (a small church).

It was originally intended to be the lower part of a larger church structure, but due to financial constraints, only the Crypt portion was completed and until this day serves as a standalone structure often visited for its architectural significance and artistic beauty.

Despite its incomplete state, the Crypt nowadays is considered a masterpiece of modernist architecture and a significant precursor to Gaudí’s more famous Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.

This is a very interesting place to visit if you want to see more works of Antoni Gaudi. And it will be to particular interest to those who are visiting Barcelona (and Spain) for the first time without the ability to spend much time in Barcelona city.

There is a small entrance fee to enter but with it you can also explore different areas of the village, gaining insights into its industrial history and architectural significance.

Montserrat Mountain Range With the Benedictine Abbey

The next stop I suggest you make when on a drive from Barcelona to Andorra is a place of pilgrimage and religious devotion Montserrat Abbey (of course if you haven’t visited it yet). This Abbey lies on the route to Andorra (which is easy to detour to) and is one of the most significant places in entire Spain.

The area where the Abbey is situated is stunning. Montserrat mountain range has unique geological formations characterized by striking pink conglomerate rocks and in the middle of those formations on the mountain the Abbey sits. The rocks form a dramatic backdrop to the architectural elements of the complex which is so breathtaking once you look.

Besides the scenery, Montserrat Abbey has a rich cultural history and is known for the Black Madonna , a revered statue of the Virgin Mary and the Infant Jesus. It holds deep religious and cultural significance, is considered a symbol of Catalan identity, and is associated with legends of miracles. Many pilgrims visit Montserrat Abbey to honor and seek blessings from this iconic statue.

There is also the abbey complex, including the basilica and museum, which provide insights into the region’s history and architecture. 

It is easy to spend the whole day in this complex as there are lots of opportunities for photography and cultural exploration . 

One of the oldest boys’ choirs in Europe performs daily in the basilica, so if you come at a specific time, you’ll be able to hear them sing. Not to mention multiple hiking trails, culinary delights (there are a few restaurants with Catalan cuisine and mountain views), and just a beautiful large territory where to relax .

Manresa Ancient City

The ancient town of Manresa has been known long before the birth of Christ and is an interesting city to visit these days. Many people come here on a day trip from Barcelona but spending a few hours on a road trip to Andorra is a better option since you drive right through it.

The first thing Manresa is famous for is its religious significance because it is tied to the cave where the founder of the Jesuit order Saint Ignatius of Loyola spent time in prayer and contemplation. During the Roman Empire in the 16th century, he stopped there to pray on his way from the Montserrat monastery to Jerusalem, Since then, the city has become a center of Catholic pilgrimage.

If you have an interest in religious history or want to visit sites associated with saints, then you’ll enjoy a stop in the ‘Cave of Saint Ignatius’ (see photos and location here ) near the Pont Vell aqueduct which opens up scenic views of the town in some way similar to the view from famous aqueduct in Cordoba .

You will also notice the Basilica of Saint Ignatius Loyola (built on a hill) which features religious art and architecture that reflect the devotion to Saint Ignatius and the Jesuit order.

Among other places to check out are the Historic Old Town with the Town Hall and narrow cobbled streets, Cardener River Walk with riverside paths and green spaces along the riverbanks great for a quick walk. There are also a few vista points in Manresa since the town is surrounded by hills and elevated areas that offer panoramic views of its surroundings.

Another thing that made Manresa famous in the last century was its many vineyards and wonderful wine. If you like wine tourism, I recommend you book a tour at Oller del Mas family-owned vineyard which includes wine tasting and an overview of the wine cellars. They also have a restaurant here with Catalan dishes.

Additionally, there is an adjacent retreat Les Cabanes de l’Oller del Mas which is a gorgeous luxurious property. It probably doesn’t make much sense to stay there just for the night on a quick road trip from Barcelona as the price is high due to the number and quality of amenities and stellar experience .

If I could sum it up, I’d say that Manresa is a hidden gem in close proximity to Barcelona. If you can’t stop here on a drive to Andorra, possibly come here on a Barcelona day trip.

Sant Benet de Bages Monastery

Sant Benet de Bages is a Benedictine monastery near Manresa situated in a landscape characterized by rolling hills and gentle slopes, with the Montserrat mountain range lying to the southeast.

You may think that it is better to skip this place if you visit Montserrat but don’t be in a hurry. 

Sant Benet de Bages is a very different type of religious site. It is the thousand-year-old monastery which is not only one of the most precious pearls of Catalan architecture, but also provides a museum route through its internal buildings – churches, monastery, wine cellar, and personal quarters of the artist Ramon Casas who lived and worked within these walls.

Over the years, this complex has evolved into a living cultural center with a commitment to local gastronomy , exemplified by ‘ La Fonda ‘, its renowned Catalan cuisine restaurant.

You can also take part in the family master classes of the Alicia Foundation, whose headquarters are located here. This project, created on the initiative of chef Ferran Adria and cardiologist Valenti Fuster, aims to do research in the field of gastronomy.

Cardona Salt Town & Its Haunted Castle

The next place that came as a big surprise on this road trip from Barcelona to Andorra was Cardona, a small salt mine town where salt has played a crucial role in its history.

There are only five thousand people living in Cardona but two (!) wonderful objects at once – one of the best castles in Europe and the Salt Mountain with an unusual attraction.

This castle (called Castell de Cardona ) is included in the top ten castles in Europe . Built in the 9th century (in the year 886) and sitting on a hill 585 meters high, it was a stronghold for ruling families, later on, a strategic military center, and even a monastery at some point. All of this left a significant trace on its history, making some people believe that there are ghosts in this castle.  

In fact, Cardona Castle now houses a hotel that has a haunted room and where you can stay if you’ve got the courage. This is the reason why I included the Parador Hotel on the list of the best places to stay on Barcelona to Andorra drive. You can see photos and hotel’s overview to get an idea of what it is like .

Even if you don’t plan to stay overnight, come to Parador for drinks and light food, and just to walk around. Views and vibe are spectacular and you’ll be able to feel the spirit of that time and enjoy the silence of the old city in solitude.

And of course don’t miss the second main attraction of the town – Salt Mountain . It is a unique geological phenomenon that has long been a constant source of wealth for the city.

Being more than 160 m high it offers big collections of ancient equipment and salt sculptures, as well as amazing grottoes with lagoons, where stalactites and stalagmites of transparent white, yellow and red colors create a magical space of fantastic dreams.

I also liked the Museum of Salt which does a good job telling the story of Cardona salt mines. 

Solsona – Catalonia’s Ancient Medieval Town

A short drive away from Cardona brings you to another ancient town of Catalonia – Solsona famous for its medieval layout (meaning that all characteristics were developed from the 5th to the 15th century) and significant examples of Baroque architecture which was built later.

The main reason to come to Solsona is to see the mix of these architectural styles that have been preserved very well. It is especially pleasant to look at the medieval churches and mansions of wealthy townspeople during siesta, when, according to the good old Spanish tradition, life in the city calms down and you can walk almost completely alone through historical places.

It is especially worth visiting Cathedral of Santa Maria from the 12th century with a statue of the Blessed Virgin made of black stone, Diocesan Museum (which focuses on the heritage of the local diocese and includes items related to the Catholic Church’s history in the region), 15th-century fountain in St. John’s Square, and Llobera Palace.

We visited Salsona in the evening on a rainy fall day when the mist created a special atmosphere. If you also come during the colder season, you will simply enjoy walking the streets and taking photos.

Also, one thing to add – Solsona is famous for its culinary traditions. So if you arrive hungry, try Catalan cuisine with a colorful regional accent in any restaurant in the town. We liked La Tasqueta de la Nuria with fine local dishes at reasonable prices and views of the old town if you sit outside.

And then if you happen to go from Barcelona to Andorra by car in September, there is a chance to see the city’s main festival, the Fiesta Mayor de Solsona . Visiting in February also provides a unique opportunity to witness an equally spectacular show – the Solsona Giants carnival , with a procession of mummered giant figures.

Panta d’Oliana Reservoir

This reservoir is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, offering views of the vividly seen Pyrenees mountains and the water’s expanse. It is a nice place where to stop briefly just to enjoy the scenic natural beauty of the local area.

The main thing here is not to enter tunnels but to take detour roads to drive by the reservoir. Once on the C-14 highway, you will see multiple tunnels that lead through the mountains. But before reaching them, there are side roads that go beneath the mountain with a tunnel and open up some views of the reservoir.

And the only way to drive on them is from the right side of the road when you drive to Andorra. There is no such an opportunity when you drive in the opposite direction from Andorra to Barcelona.

In summer , if you feel like taking it very slowly, one kayak company rents out kayaks out there, so you can slow down by having a kayaking exercise. I know there are even guided tours on offer for both adults and kids. 

If you are interested, get in touch with them in advance to book a tour or inquire about the kayak for rent.

Organyà – Countryside Town

Organya town differs from the places mentioned earlier, such as Cardona and Solsona, and more so Manresa but is worth a quick stop before you continue to drive to Andorra.

It is a smaller town known for its tranquil setting in the typical Catalan countryside (with terraced landscapes and stone farmhouses that are a reflection of the region’s architectural heritage and are sometimes used for agritourism), surrounded by mountains. And mountains here are already very close to the town walls.

While Organya does not have the historical and cultural prominence of larger towns like Solsona or the religious significance of Montserrat, it is lovely to walk through the old town to see a different style of architecture and already different scenic landscapes.

I would spend here between 30-60 minutes to get a different feel (compared to places you saw prior) and continue the journey.

La Seu d’Urgell

This was our last stop before entering Andorra which we made late at night to eat (our food that we purchased earlier in Mercadona). The atmosphere felt so spooky due to the fog, medieval architecture, and no people on the streets.

Only later I learned that La Se d’Urgell is an ancient city, a gateway to the Pyrenees mountains and Andorra, with a beautiful old town with plenty of shopping, restaurants, and old historic monuments.

Since it was already dark when we arrived, we went straight to the Cathedral of Santa Maria – the town’s highlight, to enjoy our snacks. And this cathedral looked impressive. I wouldn’t call the cathedral massive but it is magnificent. It still overwhelms from above with its historical age and might.

Taking a stroll through the old town was also worth it, but if you are at the end of your road trip and tired, then it is probably okay to make this stop rather short.

Just pay tribute to the Cathedral of Santa Maria, Castell de la Seu d’Urgell, and Plaça d’Orient (the main square with cute little cafes and medieval buildings). And after this quick visit move on to the mountains of Andorra.

NOTE : La Seu d’Urgell is also your last town on the Spanish side where to shop for groceries. If you are entering Andorra and then going to France and feeling like picking up some Spanish food items that you liked, it is better to do grocery shopping in this town. There is a big Mercadona with good hot food items on sale too.

Traveling to Andorra: requirements and 9 tips for tourists

Are you going to travel to Andorra soon and you don't know very well how to manage this trip? In this article we will give 7 tips or advice you should keep in mind when visiting this country as a tourist so that the management is as easy and enjoyable as possible and you can enjoy the Principality without too many complications. These tips will be very helpful when planning your trip

Requirements to travel to Andorra

Andorra has agreements with its neighbors Spain and France because you can only enter the country precisely through them. According to these agreements, to enter Andorra a person only needs that documentation that is required to enter Spain or France . So, for example, the requirements to travel to Andorra from Spain are to bring the documentation that has had to be obtained to travel to Spain. Obviously, if you are going to be Andorran resident , more documentation is required but not to travel as a tourist. Thus, the list of requirements would be as follows:

• Spanish people or people from within the European Union: they only need the ID or valid passport .
• People from countries outside the European Union and within the Schengen Area: bring the valid passport .
• People from countries outside the Schengen area: provide the Valid passport and Schengen visa .

Regarding the requirements to travel to Andorra due to the covid, there are currently none . You can travel to Andorra from Spain and from France without any extra requirements. PCR is not needed to travel to Andorra and neither is TMA or other tests.

Travel to Andorra from Barcelona

To travel to Andorra from Barcelona, obviously, there are many options . You can go by taxi, but then prepare your wallet because it's not going to be cheap. You can also look for options in blablacar , since it is usual for people from Andorra to travel to Barcelona and vice versa and it is easy for someone to have a Blablacar service.

But without any doubt the most reasonable and most used option is the bus . In this sense there are two main lines; on the one hand Andorra By Bus , which also allows you to take buses from Toulouse and on the other Directbus , which only Barcelona offers. However, DirectBus offers a stop at Barcelona Sants, Barcelona's train station, while AndorraByBus only has stops at airports.

Finally, there are other bus options such as Alsa buses and also those of Flixbus . All trips are around €30 per person for a one-way ticket and €55 per person for a return ticket.

Travel to Andorra from Madrid

Similarly, to travel to Madrid we can do it with a taxi, although it is not recommended, and we can also search if there is any Blablacar . On the other hand, the company Alsa also offers Madrid-Andorra trips for €52 one way and €98 round trip. However, the best option without a doubt for those who do not want to waste time is to use the newly opened flight from Andorra to Madrid , since for €59 the trip is made from La Seu d'Urgell airport to Madrid and vice versa in one hour.

Travel insurance and healthcare

You'll probably be interested take out travel insurance before coming to Andorra . As we told in our article on the functioning of Andorran healthcare , the European health card does NOT work in Andorra: it is not valid. the principality is not within the European Union and therefore this card is useless.

Therefore and as if that were not enough, when having any urgency tourist taxes apply that is, on Andorran non-residents. And it is necessary to say that ski slope insurance only covers you on the ski slope , not out of it.

Therefore, in addition to request scroll wheel ( E/AND.101 ) in the Spanish Social Security, for example) take out travel insurance it can be very interesting. So you will not have to worry about your health while you are here because you will have full medical insurance as a tourist.

About telephony and mobile internet

Do not enter the country with the foreign mobile internet activated, nor activate it at any time once inside. The strictest recommendation we can give regarding telephony when traveling to Andorra is turn off the phone at the border, before entering the country and turn it on again but without entering the PIN or activate the SIM card. Thus, the mobile will be completely blocked at the telephone level and they will not be able to charge you any absolutely crazy cost.

We make that recommendation because there are telephone companies that charge to receive the call in a foreign country , with which even if you turn off the data or do not answer the calls, they can charge a plus for receiving said call on a foreign network, and return from your trip to Andorra with a disgust.

Only if you are totally sure that this is not your case, it may be advisable not to do the restart, although it is the safest. If this is the case for you and you decide not to restart your phone, the advice is that you must remember not to take any incoming calls and turn off the data of the device before entering the country and not turn them back on that SIM card until you return to the country of origin.

But then how do I connect?

Andorra is a pioneer country in technology and internet connection . The first solution is that you wait to go to your hotel or lodging place, restaurant, etc. where you can access the internet via local WIFI and you can connect, using the local wife of that site.

The second option, but only if it is an emergency is to connect to one of multiple free wife networks that are spread through all the country. Use this second option only if it is an emergency and never enter personal or important information such as credit cards, passwords or ID. These networks are not secure.

And finally, if you want to have 4g mobile internet and not rely on WiFis to access the network, one of the tips is to buy a prepaid card for your visit , especially if you are going to travel to Andorra for several days. One option is the famous card Holly or similar with which you can get mobile connection in many countries. Another alternative is to buy a andorra Telecom prepaid internet card with which you will be able to navigate, call and send SMS, although it is better to see the communication rates of the card before carrying out any action.

Andorra and the snow

Don't leave Andorra without having enjoyed the snow , unless your trip is in summer. If you are going to travel to Andorra in non-snow seasons, you should also visit the wonderful Andorran mountainous landscape to discover the whole country. Having three natural parks, one of which is a World Heritage Site, unique lakes and peaks, not making trips to the Andorran mountains is a sin, excuse me.

Grandvalira

Grandvalira  is the largest ski resort in Andorra, and one of the largest in the world. It has 7 different sectors from which to access its tracks and peaks (Encamp, Canillo, Solder, Gray Rig, Ex Tarter, Patrol, Pas de la Casey). With more than 120 slopes and more than 200 km of skiing, this is undoubtedly the great Andorran ski resort. The Grandvalira ski pass is one of the most expensive (although not so much) but it works for all these sectors. It is the definitive option for a great weekend. 

Grandvalira is the most common stop for anyone who is going to travel to Andorra. Regarding activities without skiing, in the Grau Roig sector you can do activities such as snowmobiles (€120 for 2 seats) or make an igloo, and in the Palau de Gel de Canillo you can ice skate with a rink that is all the year open, and other activities such as karting, quads etc. This track, in addition, is free for those of the Super 3 Club.

Andorra Vallnord

Although Vallnord it has fewer sectors (Pal, Arousal, Ordino Arcades), it is more affordable than Grandvalira. The price of the ski pass for an adult is €41 and for beginner skiers there is a ski pass for €19.50 that allows you to take the chairlift and conveyor belt for beginners, with the access cable car included. The ski pass for children under 6 years old is free and from 6 to 15 years old it costs €35. 

In Pal if you do not like skiing, you can sled on a good track for 5 euros the person with a conveyor belt.

 Naturlandia

In Naturlanda – La Rabassa There is not only a great cross-country ski station and snowshoe routes, but also a park for adventure activities (snowmobiles, zip lines, etc…) with an animal park. If you don't like skiing, this beautiful place is probably the best for you if you are wondering what to see or do on your trip to Andorra. 

It is divided into two levels: at the 1600 level is the amusement and adventure park and at the 2000 level is the animal park and the Nordic ski slopes and snowshoes. Cross-country skiing or snowshoeing while watching the animals fully integrated into their habitat in a large forest, a beautiful spectacle! The price of the Nordic ski pass is €12 and that of the animal park €14 for adults.

Be careful with shopping

You can buy a lot of reduced price products , but pay special attention to the amount (in monetary value) of what you buy . Shopping in Andorra can be very affordable, not only because VAT or consumption tax there (IGI) is 4.5% or less , but for the special taxes on tobacco, gasoline, alcohol, etc. But the purchases are not unlimited. One of the tips is nothing to buy perfumes, electronics, tobacco and alcohol for the whole neighborhood.

You have to know that there are  limits on private importation  of these products. Smuggling is a very typical activity when traveling to Andorra, but it is very controlled. If you exceed any of these limits, you will have to declare them at customs and pay a fee or fine that will make your product more expensive than if it were foreign, even being more profitable if they requisition it in some cases.

First, note that  the maximum limit of the value of what you import per person over 16 must be less than €900 . And for each product there is also a different limit:

• The limit for  alcohol  below 22 degrees is  3 liters
• For beer is 16 liters
• At most you can import  300 units of cigarettes
• In sugar or candy you must carry less than 5 kilos
• Milk less than 6 liters
• Coffee you can only 1 kg
• And some more limits

In addition, you must also know that the total value of what you wear both when entering and leaving (cash and valuables) must be less than €10,000.

Travel to Andorra with children and pets

The first tip to remember is that you must have all the documentation in hand. If you come from countries with which Andorra has an agreement, such as Spain, France or Portugal with the DNI of all people you can enter the Principality . If not, you must have your passport and/or other documentation in order and in force. So if you are traveling with children on board, do not forget that they must have a valid DNI.

Well, the truth is that when traveling to Andorra you can do almost anything with children: from mountain walks, hiking in nature and routes to lakes to snow sports such as skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling. You can also go to Naturlandia, the Caldea spa... almost all plans can be done with children in Andorra . Even so, we recommend a few that are key:

• Walking among animals and dinosaurs through the  Jerri contemporary gardens located in Sant Julia de Lòria. In these private gardens but whose visit is free of charge, you can find a collection of contemporary art sculptures taken care of by their owner, as well as dinosaurs and many other animals.
• Climb the Naturlandia Airtrekk, which is the largest adventure activity facility in Europe. It is a wooden structure full of nets, platforms, ropes, zip lines, walkways, etc.

Travel to Andorra with dogs

If you bring a dog when traveling to Andorra, you must complete certain documentation before visiting the country of the Pyrenees. The  requirements to enter animals in Andorra  is that they have to be over 3 months old, they have to have the animal passport that your veterinarian will make for you, the rabies vaccine up to date and next to it there must be a serology that is negative for animal rabies made by your veterinary. As for activities, if your dog lives in the mountains, obviously almost any plan will delight him.

The chains or contact tires

If you visit the country in winter, make sure that you carry chains or winter contact wheels in your vehicle .

No excuses that if it is a good day, if it is only a moment or that you will not climb much, The Pyrenees climate is very treacherous and can change in a short time and start to snow. On the other hand, on a cold day, nobody assures you of not finding an ice or snow plate on the road. Therefore, never forget the  chains ,  and being able to be 4 , one for each wheel if you go to Andorra by motor home or 2 minimum if you go by car.

In addition, in 2015 a modification of the Andorra Traffic Code entered into force, in which it  forces  to bring adequate equipment (chains or tires adapted) to all vehicles that circulate on the roads and streets of the small country of the Pyrenees. The obligation begins each season on  November 1st , and finish the  May 15th of the following year

Normally the  andorra police  fine only when in case of snowfall or ice on the road (although you can do it at any time within that mandatory period), a vehicle gets stuck hindering the movement.

The amount of the penalty goes from  180 euros  at 500 euros in the case of vehicles of more than 3.5 tons. And to avoid it, the vehicle must be equipped with winter tires or with metal or cloth chains, which are suitable for the dimensions of the wheels. At a minimum they must be carried on the tractor wheels. The measure affects both Andorran residents vehicles and  no residents ones .
