Whether it's the cost of a meal at the airport or an unplanned overnight stay in a hotel, your travel insurance has got you covered. In times of escalating challenges, AXA is here to assist you in devising a strategic course of action. Hereâs the full list of benefits AXA Travel Protection Plans have to offer:
Medical Benefits:
- Emergency Medical Expenses: Should you fall ill or have an accident during your trip, your policy may offer coverage for medical expenses, including hospital stays and doctor's fees.
- Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation: In case of a serious medical emergency, your policy may include provisions for evacuation to the nearest appropriate medical facility or repatriation.
- Non-Emergency Evacuation & Repatriation : In non-medical crises (e.g., political unrest), your policy may cover evacuation or repatriation, subject to policy terms.
Pre-Departure Travel Benefits:

- COVID-19 Travel Insurance: Coverage is available for trip cancellation and medical expenses related to COVID-19, subject to policy terms and conditions.

- Lost or Stolen Luggage: In the unfortunate event of permanent loss or theft of your luggage, your policy may offer reimbursement for its value, assisting you in replacing your belongings.
Additional Optional Travel Benefits:
- Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver): Exclusive to Gold & Platinum plan policy holders, this optional benefit gives travelers extra coverage on their rental car against damage and theft.
- Cancel for Any Reason: Exclusive to Platinum plan policy holders; this optional benefit gives travelers more flexibility to cancel their trip for any reason outside of their standard policy.

Do I need Travel Insurance for Singapore?
Starting February 13, 2023, visitors to Singapore are no longer mandated to have travel insurance. However, it's highly advised for all travelers to consider obtaining a thorough travel insurance policy that includes coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and delays. Why? There are several reasons:
Singapore, known for its top-notch healthcare, might surprise you with unexpected medical costs. With coverage for emergency medical expenses, you're offered coverage and assistance for any unforeseen life events.
Lost Baggage: Airlines sometimes mishandle baggage, and the last thing you want is to be without your essentials in an unfamiliar place. Travel insurance offers to cover the cost of replacing necessary items, allowing you to continue.
Despite Singapore's efficient travel network, unexpected delays can happen. The "Trip Delay" benefit comes in handy, covering extra expenses like meals and accommodation so your travel hiccups do not turn into headaches.
How much does Travel Insurance cost for Singapore?
In general, travel insurance costs about 3 â 10% of your total prepaid and non-refundable trip expenses. The cost of travel insurance depends on two factors for AXA Travel Protection plans:
- Total Trip cost: The total non-prepaid and non-refundable costs you have already paid for your upcoming trip. This includes prepaid excursions, plane tickets, cruise costs, etc.
- Age: Like any other insurance type, the correlation is rooted in increased health risks associated with older individuals. It's important to note that this doesn't make travel insurance unattainable for older individuals.
With AXA Travel Protection, travelers to Singapore will be offered three tiers of insurance: Silver, Gold and Platinum . Each provides varying levels of coverage to cater to individual's preferences and travel needs.
Our Suggested AXA Travel Protection Plan
AXA presents travelers with three travel plans â the Silver Plan , Gold Plan , and Platinum Plan , each offering different levels of coverage to suit individual needs. Given that Singapore hospitals often do not accept U.S. health insurance or Medicare, we genuinely recommend travelers to consider purchasing any of these plans, particularly for the crucial coverage they offer for emergency accident and sickness medical expenses. The Platinum Plan is your go-to choice if you're looking for extra coverage for Singaporeâs experience. " Cancel for Any Reason " offers greater flexibility for those unexpected twists in your travel plans and the "Rental Car (Collision Damage Waiver)" offers assistance when you're out exploring Singapore's stunning landscapes in a rental car. For avid golfers planning a swing through Singaporeâs world-class golf courses, the "Loss Golf Days" benefit is exclusive to Platinum plan policyholders. This optional benefit steps in to offer reimbursement for pre-paid golf arrangements that you might be unable to utilize due to specified golf closures.
What types of medical coverage do AXA Travel Protection plans offer?
AXA covers three types of medical expenses:
- Emergency medical expenses
- Emergency evacuation & repatriation
- Non-medical emergency evacuation & repatriation
Emergency Medical: Offers coverage when unexpected health issues happen, like broken bones, burns, sudden illnesses, or allergic reactions.
Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Can cover your immediate transportation home in the event of an accidental injury or illness.
Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation: Comes into play when you urgently need to leave a place for reasons not related to health. This coverage may assist with evacuation in non-medical situations, such as natural disasters or civil unrest.
Are there any COVID-19 restrictions for travelers to Singapore?
Entry into Singapore for all travelers is permitted without the need for entry approvals, pre-departure tests, on-arrival tests, quarantine, or mandatory COVID-19 travel insurance.

FAQ About Travel Insurance to Singapore
Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.
Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.
Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.
Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).
The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.
A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.
Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.
Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

INSIDER Guide To Singapore Travel Insurance – Must Read!
Singapore is a jewel of a city that straddles modern and traditional sentiments. On the one hand, you have cutting-edge skyscrapers, vibrant light shows, and futuristic trees. On the other, you have a melting point of ancient and contemporary cultures. In the space of a few hours, you can explore one of the most thriving Chinatowns on the planet, sip chai in Little India, and listen to the call to prayer on Arab Street. Then after that you can hit the neon-lit bars and toast a Singapore Sling with hip young Singaporeans!
The sovereign city-state has attracted an influx of ex-pats to further shake up the population. What was once a nation that terrified broke backpackers with its eye-watering prices is now an integral part of any South East Asia trip. Unlike some countries, Singapore does not impose mandatory travel insurance upon its guests. And in such a safe city, you might be wondering if you really need it. Singapore truly is a safe country to visit -itâs actually the safest city in South East Asia. Particularly if youâre only visiting for a weekend or on a layover visit, you might feel like you’re off the hook with travel insurance.
But think again…
However, while the crime rate is low, it isnât non-existent and valuables do get taken. Also bear in mind Airlines can cancel flights without any notice, so you may need emergency Singapore accommodation. Natural disasters in Singapore are rare but not impossible. Above all, if at any point you require emergency medical attention in Singapore, the price will sting more than a jellyfish.
At the end of the day, travel insurance for visitors to Singapore (or anywhere else) is definitely something to ponder.

Healthcare in Singapore
What youâve heard is true: healthcare in Singapore is phenomenal! It shouldnât come as a surprise that the city has the best healthcare in Asia. Itâs sitting very pretty in #6 place for the best healthcare in the world, with clean, modern facilities and top-quality doctors. Singaporeans are blessed with having an average life expectancy of a ripe old 85.2 years. This is down to their wondrous healthcare system, as well as the fact the country focuses on preventative care.
Singaporeâs health system presents a mixture of public and private healthcare. Those hospitalized in Singapore have five treatment tiers available: A, B1, B2+, B2 and C. âAâ gives you a private, en-suite room and your choice of doctor. At the bottom of the scale, âCâ puts you in an open ward with up to eight other patients. Selecting âAâ means the patient coughs up the full amount, whereas âCâ is funded by the government up to 80%. All Singaporean workers are obligated to put their monthly earnings into a pot for savings and health needs.
Tourists, however, are required to cover the cost of their own treatment. Although guidelines exist, private hospitals and clinics in Singapore set their own fees . The average cost of a short doctorâs consultation is S$51 ($36 USD). Emergency clinics that operate around the clock charge from around S$80 ($56 USD) for a consultation, or upwards of S$90 ($63 USD) after midnight.
Smaller than London, Singapore is an island city-state. The whole country is urban, with hospitals well distributed. So if you do need to visit a doctor, the good news is that you wonât have to travel far. But without Singapore travel insurance, that spell in the doctorâs office could bite.
Crime in Singapore
The crime rate in Singapore is remarkably low. The city has a crime index of 31.56 and a safety index of 68.44. Data shows that violent crimes are extremely rare in Singapore. In 2019, the overall crime rate spread concern by being shown to be on the increase. But that wasnât down to theft, violet crimes or robberies – they’re all on the decrease. However, scams had risen by an alarming 54.2%. These were mainly targeting victims online and via loans. As a tourist, exercise caution when surfing the net in Singapore. Use a VPN when logged into public wi-fi, and look closely at your Singapore travel insurance to see how it protects you.
Unlike the majority of other cities around the world, even pick-pockets rarely operate in this safe haven. In fact, Singaporeans frequently find themselves the victim of petty crime when they travel! Thatâs because theyâre simply not used to having to protect themselves against thieves . But, as always, all travellers should have their wits about them. As safe as Singaporeâs streets are – even at night – itâs best to be cautious.
Issues Facing Travellers in Singapore
With this low crime rate, fabulous healthcare system, and lack of danger, what could possibly go wrong in Singapore? And why should you waste your hard-earned cash on Singapore travel insurance? There are a few issues facing travellers backpacking around Singapore . One thing Singapore hasnât escaped is the dreaded mosquito. Dengue fever is on the rise, with over 14,600 reported dengue cases in 2019. This tropical disease doesnât always require hospital treatment, but itâs wise to be covered.
Another issue that plagues tourists is fines. Singapore is, literally, a fine city. Well, yes – it is fine, but it also has a reputation for fines. Although it isnât actually illegal to chew gum in the city, it is illegal to sell or import it. Donât smuggle in a family pack of Wrigleyâs and try flogging it in your hostel in order to buy the best insurance for Singapore.
Playing a musical instrument in an âannoyingâ manner will get you a fine of up to $1,000 USD. Using anotherâs wi-fi counts as hacking (farewell, $10,000 USD). If you forget to flush the toilet, thatâll cost you $150 USD. In some cases of drug use, you could be sentenced to death. Your travel insurance in Singapore won’t be able to help you much with fines, sadly.
Common Activities in Singapore
No matter where you stay in Singapore , your trip is going to be a love affair with incredible food, fascinating museums, and mind-boggling architecture, not forgetting some truly supertrees. If you need a dose of adventure, spice up your stay in Singapore with one of these activities.
City tours – by foot, by bicycle, by scooter or segway! If you donât fancy traipsing around the city on your feet all day, do as the cool kids do and join a tour on wheels. This is one of the most popular things to do in Singapore. Itâs a relatively safe affair, but you might want to cover your ankles and elbows on your Singapore travel insurance before letting loose.
Scuba diving – not for those travelling on a shoestring budget! But if youâre a PADI pro, you might want to add one of Singaporeâs dive spots to your portfolio. As an island, Singapore has a number of sites available, including Pulau Jong, Pulau Hantu, and Kesu Island. If you do dive, be super cautious about the restrictions on flying after your excursion. If you donât obey the minimum surface interval before you take to the sky, youâll have more than an earache.
Sentosa Island – this awesome day trip gives you a slice of tropical paradise. Visit Universal Studios, go sailing or kayaking, or chill on the beach. If you’re brave, you can do a bungee jump here too!
Things go wrong on the road ALL THE TIME. Be prepared for what life throws at you.
Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!
More often than not, the majority of Singapore travel insurance policies will include the following;
Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses
Luggage and personal property, emergency evacuation and repatriation, non-medical emergency evacuation, trip cancellation, trip interruption.
These are some key terms to look out for when you are comparing different travel insurance policies . Now, letâs take a closer look at each one of these to see what they actually mean!
Emergency Medical costs cover, is the most important aspects of most travel insurance policies. If you are involved in an accident or get very sick with a mystery illness, you want to rest easy knowing that any medical costs and hospital bills will be taken care of.
Many of you will have never seen a medical bill. Good. But let me tell you, they can get very expensive very easily. A friend of mine was once billed $10,000 in Costa Rica. Even 2 days in a Thai hospital cost him nearly $2,000.00, and Singapore is way more expensive than Thailand.
Pre-existing medical and health conditions may not be covered or may be covered for an additional premium.
Ideally, Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical insurance should offer at least $100,000.00 of coverage. Some run into the millions.
Luggage and Personal Stuff coverage covers the value of your personal property. Itâs most common application is for lost luggage and However, many policies also extend this to cover “on the ground” theft which comes in useful if you are robbed once you reach your destination.
The limits on this vary between policies. However, the maximum value rarely exceeds $1000 with a maximum item value between – $250 – $500.
This is ok for many travellers. However if you travel with a lot of electrical gear (laptop & camera), or are packing skiing gear, you may also wish to think about taking out a separate gadget cover.
We’ve tested countless backpacks over the years, but there’s one that has always been the best and remains the best buy for adventurers: the broke backpacker-approved Osprey Aether and Ariel series.
Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!
Emergency evacuation covers the cost of sending you back to your home country in a sickbed. Letâs say that the above mentioned illness is a nasty one, and the decision is taken to send you home for further treatment; this will take care of the high costs of flying you home with tubes stuck into your arms.
Repatriation is the cost of sending your body home in the unlikely event that you die on your trip. The costs of this are usually very high. Repatriation costs are not a burden I would want to leave to my family. Whilst this is thankfully rare, I do sometimes come across Facebook or âGo Fund Meâ campaigns for somebody’s body to be flown home.
Non-medical Emergency Evacuation is when you have to be evacuated from your destination because of some unexpected crisis. Examples can be outbreaks of war/civil unrest and earthquakes that decimate infrastructure such as the 2015 earthquake in Nepal.
Emergency evacuation insurance covers the costs of having to book a last-minute flight home ( which can be very expensive) and will also cover accommodation costs if you end up being flown to a random, âsafeâ country rather than going straight home.
Having to cancel a trip that you were psyched about is heartbreaking. However, then being left out of pocket just adds scurrilous insult to grievous injury. Trip Cancellation cover can help you recover the non-refundable costs of your trip such as flight and hotel costs.
Obviously, you canât claim this simply because you changed your mind about the trip or broke up with your girlfriend. Legitimate cancellation reasons are things like sickness, family emergencies, bereavement, natural disaster and war – you get the gist.
Trip Interruption is when something goes wrong, or interrupts, your trip leaving you out of pocket. One example, when your pre-paid hotel burns down and you are forced to book another one. Another example is when your flight home is canceled and you need a few extra nights at your hotel.
Anything Else?
The above are what we consider to be the basic, bare-bones of travel insurance policies. However, some policies do offer a few more aspects to them. The very best Singapore travel insurance policies may also include the following;
Adventure Sports and Activities
Adventure sports and activities are not covered by all travel insurance policies. The definition of adventure sports and activities really does vary between providers but for example, can include;
- Martial Arts
- Bungee Jumping
- Scuba Diving
- Informal basketball gamesâŠ.
If you are even thinking about doing anything physical or outdoorsy on your trip, it is very wise to check that your insurance provider is in fact covering it. Snapped tendons tend to hurt plenty enough without having hefy medical bills attached to them.
Accidental Death and Dismemberment
This one is perhaps a bit macabre. It doesnât cover any travel-related expenses as such but instead it basically provides you (or your next of kin) with monetary compensation in the event that something happens to you. If you die, your loved ones get a payout. Or, if you lose a toe or something, YOU get a payout.
Itâs kind of like having a bit of life cover attached to your travel insurance.
âWell dear, Iâm afraid there is good new and bad news. The bad news is that our beloved daughter little Jenny died on her trip to Singapore. The good news is that we get $10k! Singapore here WE come!â
Gear and Electronics Cover
Some insurance policies cover electronic gadgets but others do not. Those that do, sometimes charge an additional fee and they also usually limit the maximum item value. If you only travel with a phone or a tablet then your travel insurer may well cover it entirely. However, if like us if you are traveling with a decent laptop and camera, then you may wish to consider obtaining gadget cover.
I have personally had separate gadget cover on my MacBook Pro for years.
A new country, a new contract, a new piece of plastic – booooring. Instead, buy an eSIM!
An eSIM works just like an app: you buy it, you download it, and BOOM! You’re connected the minute you land. It’s that easy.
Is your phone eSIM ready? Read about how e-Sims work or click below to see one of the top eSIM providers on the market and ditch the plastic .
Whilst they may all seem the same, not all insurers are. Some travel insurers offer lower prices more suited to budget backpackers while others offer higher coverage amounts. Some are infamous for not paying claims whilst others are celebrated for being fair and helpful.
Travel insurers – always the same yet always different. It isnât possible (or legal) for us to say that anyone of them is the best, or is âbetterâ than the others. No. Insurance is a very complex product and any policy takes into account a whole lot of data and a wide set of variables.
Remember that the âbestâ travel insurance always depends on where you are going, when you are going there and ultimately upon you and your needs. The best travel insurer for one trip, may not be the best for a different trip.
Below, we will introduce a few of the many travel insurance providers on offer. These are all firms we have used ourselves over the years.
SafetyWing are a relatively new player in the travel insurance space but are already making big waves. They specialise in cover for digital nomads and they offer open ended cover on a monthly subscription basis. Because they primarily cover digital nomads, they donât offer much in the way of trip cancellation or delay so do take that into consideration.
However, SafetyWing really excels on the health side of travel insurance, covering dental and some complimentary treatments. In fact they even allow young children to be covered for free.
If cancellation and delay is not a concern for you or if you will be spending some considerable time on your trip, then maybe SafetyWing is the insurance provider for you.
- Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses â $250,000
- Baggage and Personal Property â $3000
- Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation â $100,000
- Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation â $10,000
- Trip Cancellation -$0
- Trip Interruption â $5000
If you need more information or want to get a quote, then you can visit the website for yourself.
World Nomads
World Nomads have been insuring backpackers for years now. World Nomads specialise in backpacker travel insurance and their policies cover long way travel on one way tickets, trips to multiple countries and a whole lot of adventure activities. These guys are well used to dealing with backpackers like us, and they are regularly recommended by travel bloggers and industry insiders. We love World Nomads Insurance .
They offer 2 different policies depending on your needs. The Standard Plan is standard & the Explorer Plan covers a whole host of high risk, high fun activities. World Nomads are also one of the few travel insurers who will write you a policy after starting your trip. The one downside for us is that they donât cover Pakistan.
Let’s look at the maximum coverage amounts with both the Standard & Explorer plan.
- Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses -$100,000/$100,000
- Baggage and Personal Property â $1000/$3000
- Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation â $300,000/$500,000
- Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation â $25,000/$25,000
- Trip Cancellation -$2500/$10,000
- Trip Interruption â $2500/$10,000
If you want more info or to get a quote then visit the World Nomads site for yourself and take a look.
The savvy fin-tech insurer Faye provides whole-trip travel coverage and care that brings out the best in each journey with industry-leading technology that enables smarter and smoother assistance with faster claims resolutions. Their excellent app-based travel insurance covers your health, your trip and your gear all via an app that provides real-time proactive solutions, quick reimbursements and 24/7 customer support.
If you ever do need to make a claim, then you simply log in to the app and the claim will be assessed super quickly from anywhere in the world! My friend made a claim and was able to manage everything directly on the app. She was even able to purchase âCancel for Any Reasonâ Insurance that allows you to quite literally cancel for any reason, and be refunded up to 75% of non-refundable bookings.
Best of all, if the claim is successful then the funds will be immediately credited to the smart wallet on your phone or device and ready for you to spend.
Columbus Direct
Named after one of history’s greatest (and most divisive explorers), Columbus Direct also specialise in insuring adventure-hungry explorers like us. They have been providing award-winning insurance for 30 years. What we like about this plan is that it does cover small amounts of personal cash. However, Gadget Cover is not available.
Columbus Direct actually offers a number of different travel insurance plans. Below we have focused on 1 of these and have set out the coverage amounts for the Globetrotter plan.
- Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses â $1,000,000
- Baggage and Personal Property â $750
- Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation â $1,000,000
- Non-Medical Emergency Evacuation â $0
- Trip Cancellation -$1,000
- Trip Interruption  (âCatastopheâ)  â $750
Iati Seguros
Iati Seguros is a Spanish based travel insurance company who we have personally used and loved. You will notice that they provide competitive cover amounts for the key travel insurance areas, and are competitively priced. So far we have heard nothing but good things about them.
They also offer multiple ones, but we have focused on the Standard Plan although we wholly encourage checking out all plans for yourself to identify the best one for your needs.
Standard Plan
- Emergency Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses â $200,000
- Baggage and Personal Property â $1000
- Emergency Evacuation and Repatriation â 100% of cost
- Trip Cancellation -$1,500
- Trip Interruption â 100% of cost
Insure My Equipment
Insuremyequipment.com does precisely what the name suggests. They are an online insurer for expensive equipment (like camera gear & gold clubs). You can use them to get specific pieces of gear insured but please bear in mind this policy is only for your specified gear.
An Insure My Equipment policy works well in combination with other travel insurance. Insure My Equipment policies are an excellent choice for professionals and backpackers with more $0000âs worth of camera equipment, expensive laptops or fishing rods.
I also know a few travelling musicians and DJs who use these guys so you are in cool company.
Choosing the right travel insurance for your holiday vacation in Singapore is like choosing a pair of shoes. Only you can really say how well they fit, and how many miles you can manage in them.
To decide who the right insurer for you is, you need to add up how much your trip is worth, how much equipment you plan to take with you and what activities you intend to engage in.
You also need to ask yourself how much you can afford. This means how much you can afford to pay for cover but also how much you can afford to be out of pocket in the unlikely event of an incident. Sometimes, the cheapest Singapore travel insurance will be enough and sometimes it will be worth spending a bit more.
Hopefully the information provided in this post will help you to decide. If not, then have a blast and break a leg! Actually, probably not… you don’t have insurance.
Final Thoughts on Singapore Travel Insurance
Well done for making it to the end! Now you know everything you could possibly need to know about travel insurance in Singapore. Use our guide to inform your decision and shop around. Even the cheapest Singapore travel insurance should cover you in case something unsafe does happen in one of the safest cities in the world.
Now thatâs done and dusted, you can turn your attention to packing for Singapore because it’s time for an adventure! Weâve got plenty of content to help, including where to stay in Singapore, unique things to do, and delicious things to eat.

- Singapore Travel Insurance Requirements
Last updated: 03/07/2024
As of February 13, 2023, Singapore no longer requires visitors to obtain a travel insurance policy that covers Covid-19. However, getting a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers medical emergencies, cancellations, and delays is still strongly recommended to all travelers.
Squaremouthâs Singapore Travel Insurance Recommendations
Squaremouth recommends a policy that offers Emergency Medical coverage with at least $50,000 for international destinations. Squaremouth also recommends travelers have at least $100,000 of Emergency Evacuation coverage as well. All medical policies through Squaremouth offer both Emergency Medical and Emergency Evacuation coverage.
Many travelers visiting Singapore have high prepaid and nonrefundable trip costs. Due to these high trip costs, along with the required medical benefits, Squaremouth recommends travelers purchase a policy with Trip Cancellation coverage. This benefit can reimburse 100% of the travelerâs prepaid and nonrefundable trip expenses if they need to cancel for a covered reason, such as unforeseen illness or injury. Travelers can also be covered under this benefit if they contract Covid-19 before leaving for their trip.
Squaremouth also recommends the Travel Delay benefit providing coverage for the significant travel involved getting to Singapore. Travelers can be covered up to 150% of the trip costs if their flight is delayed, and they miss out on a portion of the trip. It also can cover other reasonable expenses such as food and hotels, as well as required quarantines because of Covid-19.
The most common traveler concern is having to quarantine at their destination. The Travel Delay benefit can typically provide $150 to $200 per day for all covered travelers for required quarantine expenses such as accommodations and food. It can also provide reimbursement for rebooking a different flight home.

Do I Need Travel Insurance for Singapore?
As of February 2023, Singapore has eased up on COVID-19-related travel insurance requirements. Visitors are no longer required to obtain travel insurance before entering the country, but the government still highly recommends it.
In case things go wrong, having travel insurance coverage can provide an added layer of security. A comprehensive travel insurance plan may cover emergency medical expenses and assistance, lost or delayed baggage, unexpected trip cancellations and flight delays.
Singapore is known for outdoor adventure activities like kayaking, scuba diving and hiking â and travel insurance can offer peace of mind when youâre exploring the great outdoors. Most plans include emergency medical coverage if you sustain injuries while traveling, and some policies offer protection for sporting gear.
But every traveler is unique and will require different coverage. Whether youâre an adventure aficionado or a business traveler , thereâs an insurance plan thatâs right for you. Here are the most common travel insurance coverages:
Cancel for Any Reason Coverage
Cancel for any reason coverage , also known as CFAR, allows you to claim reimbursement if you cancel your trip for reasons not listed in your insurance policy. CFAR coverage is advantageous for travelers who might need to cancel their trip for unconventional reasons.
When compared to standard travel insurance, CFAR coverage is more flexible. However, it can be more costly and doesnât always cover you completely. There are a handful of rules to qualify for coverage, including:
- You may have to cancel at least 48 hours before your departure date.
- You need to buy CFAR coverage within a certain number of days after booking your trip.
Gear Theft Protection
Singapore has some of the highest safety rankings in the world . Nevertheless, backing yourself with gear theft protection can still be a wise choice, especially if youâre traveling with valuable personal belongings, travel documents and credit cards.
Travel insurance can help cover you in case your items are lost, damaged or stolen. Although travel insurance policies include predetermined cost limitations and exclusions, coverage is worth considering if you wish to bring the following:
- A laptop, tablet or smartphone
- Professional camera and equipment
- Sports equipment (like a kayak)
Note that, due to sub-limits on some policies, your policy may not cover the full value of your items. Review your policy documents, including the product disclosure statement, to ensure you are protected. If not, you may want to consider leaving some of your more valuable items at home.
Medical Emergency Insurance and Emergency Medical Evacuation
If you encounter health complications during your trip, having travel insurance with medical emergencies and evacuation coverage can make a big difference.
In Singapore, the smog and tropical heat may negatively affect some travelers . Be sure to declare any pre-existing medical conditions like high blood pressure, asthma or skin conditions when booking your trip insurance.
Travel insurance for medical emergencies can cover a variety of scenarios, from viral outbreaks to unforeseen medical treatments. Keep in mind that your U.S. health insurance card may not provide coverage abroad, even if you have a private plan. If things go awry, youâll have peace of mind knowing you have medical protection with travel insurance.
For medical emergency coverage, a standard travel insurance policy may include:
- Hospital admission fees
- Operations and operating room fees
- Ambulance fees
- X-rays and lab tests
- Dental costs
Travel insurance companies also usually include coverage for emergency medical evacuation and repatriation. In recent years following the pandemic, medical insurance has become a consideration for many American travelers.
Some companies also offer medical coverage for sports and adventure enthusiasts. Overseas medical expenses and treatments can add up, especially if youâre into extreme sports.
Rental Car Protection
Singapore requires car rental companies to have insurance . In most cases, rental car insurance in Singapore covers the vehicle in the event of traffic accidents. Most car rental companies opt for a basic collision damage waiver coverage that comes with limitations. Two important factors to look out for include:
- Most car rental companies will choose to opt for a higher excess, or what you will have to pay when making a claim.
- The majority of companies will only cover car use in Singapore.
Check your insurance policy before driving a Singapore rental car into other countries. For example, you may not have coverage if you drive a vehicle from Singapore to places like Hong Kong, Brunei, Cambodia or Malaysia.
If youâre traveling to Singapore and planning to rent a car, you can also purchase travel insurance with rental car coverage for extra protection. Some types of rental car coverage include:
- Collision damage waiver
- Theft protection
- Third-party liability
- Personal accident insurance
Trip Cancellation Insurance
Trip cancellation insurance can reimburse you in the event of unforeseen circumstances while traveling. This type of travel insurance covers cancellations for the following reasons:
- Death of a traveling companion or immediate family member
- Diagnosis of a serious medical condition or injury
- Natural disasters or dangerous weather conditions
- Domestic or international acts of terrorism
- Legal obligations like jury duty
Trip cancellation insurance is mostly limited to the above reasons. For more flexibility, itâs best to opt for CFAR coverage.
How Much Does Singapore Travel Insurance Cost?
The cost of travel insurance can vary depending on your coverage preferences, age and desired destination. Whether youâre searching for single-trip plans or annual multi-trip coverage , there are multiple providers to consider. And if you are on a budget, cheap travel insurance options are available.
To receive a quote from a travel insurance provider, youâll be required to submit the following information:
- Destination country
- Your home location
- Age group and the number of travelers
- Total trip price
We requested quotes from ten travel insurance companies for their most affordable plan for a trip to Singapore. The below quotes are for a 30-year-old traveler from Florida, traveling to Singapore for ten days in September 2024, with a total trip cost of $4,000. Policies include coverage for cancellations, interruptions, delays, medical care and evacuation.
These quotes were collected in April 2024 for a trip in September 2024.
How Do I Get Travel Insurance for Singapore?
There are a few things to consider before purchasing a travel insurance plan for your trip to Singapore. First, itâs worth seeing if your current health insurance plan or credit card offers any overseas coverage. We also recommend you check to see if your health insurance extends to medical emergencies abroad.
Compare various insurance options and consider factors like COVID-19 coverage, medical expenses, emergency assistance, trip cancellation and travel delays. For example, most major airlines offer travel insurance when booking flights, but coverage may not include specific medical emergencies.
Remember, full reimbursement isnât always guaranteed, so carefully review policy wording and disclaimers. Familiarize yourself with coverage exclusions and consider add-ons to enhance your travel insurance coverage.
Singapore Safety Tips
Singapore is considered one of the safest countries for travel . Whether you are traversing this modern, metropolitan city-state as an experienced traveler or a first-timer, here are some things to take into account:
Crime and Safety
Crime rates are relatively low in Singapore. However, petty crime can still happen in major tourist areas, hotel lobbies, airports and public transportation facilities. Keep an eye out for pickpocketing and theft and, if possible, keep your valuables stored in locked safes when not in use.
Day Trips, Tours and Excursions
There are plenty of options for travel from Singapore, whether you are planning a day trip to Malaysia or a longer stay in Indonesia or Thailand. If youâre planning an active activity, make sure your travel insurance plan covers medical expenses and emergency assistance.
As of February 2023, the Singapore government has lifted all restrictions regarding COVID-19 .
The country does not require COVID-19 coverage and vaccinations for international air travelers. You also do not need to show a vaccine passport to return to the U.S.
In case of an emergency when traveling in Singapore, call the U.S. Embassy hotline at +(65) 6476-9100.
Is Travel Insurance for a Singapore Vacation Worth It?
Although travel insurance for a Singapore vacation is not mandatory, it comes with many benefits. Standard insurance may cover you for lost baggage , medical emergencies, flight postponements or other travel inconveniences. Or you can opt for more comprehensive coverage, which could include protection for valuable items like cameras and sporting gear.
Travel insurance can also offer peace of mind if you have to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances. Plus, there are many add-on options to improve your travel insurance coverage â like CFAR or rental car coverage.
Ultimately, itâs up to you if travel insurance is worth it for a vacation to Singapore. We recommend comparing quotes and general information from at least three travel insurance companies before purchasing a policy.
Frequently Asked Questions About Travel Insurance in Singapore
How can i claim flight compensation.
The U.S. does not always require airlines to compensate you for delayed or canceled flights. However, travel insurance offers reimbursement for nonrefundable costs, such as airline tickets, for certain trip cancellations.
Do you need travel insurance for Singapore?
You are not required to have travel insurance to enter Singapore. But purchasing travel insurance can offer policyholders peace of mind in knowing their trip is protected against unexpected events.

Travelers do not receive free health care in Singapore. But medical expenses can add up if you need treatment while abroad. Travel insurance can help cover emergency medical expenses while in Singapore. Or you can check to see if your health care extends to emergency care while traveling.
Can I buy travel insurance after I depart for Singapore?

Best Travel Insurance Policies for Places Prone to Natural Disasters (2024)
When it comes to natural disasters, Singapore is a sheltered island. How sheltered? Based on data from 2023, we have the 4th lowest disaster risk in the world . So on this island refuge, it can be easy for us to feel detached from earthquakes, tsunamis and cyclones.
But itâs a different reality for many of our Asian neighbours. For example, China lies where the Eurasian, Pacific, and Indian Ocean plates meetâa region with high tectonic activity. Between 1990 to 2024, Statista reports that China recorded 186 earthquakes, the highest number in the world. According to the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery, the earthquakes that hit China account for one third of destructive continental earthquakes globally. Yikes.
If youâre travelling to earthquake-prone places like China, Japan or Bali , you want to make sure your travel insurance policy covers you in the event that your trip gets affected by natural disasters. Hereâs what you need to know.
Guide to Best Travel Insurance for Countries Prone to Natural Disasters
- Best travel insurance for natural disasters
- How do I choose the best travel insurance for an area prone to natural disasters?
- What are some things that travel insurers might exclude?
- How do I make a travel insurance claim if a natural disaster strikes?
- Is it safe to travel to areas prone to natural disasters?
1. Best travel insurance for natural disasters
You wonât see a separate category for natural disaster coverage in travel insurance policies. Instead, insurers count natural disasters as one of several factors that may cause a trip cancellation, postponement, delay, or curtailment.
Letâs assume youâre going on a week-long trip to an ASEAN country. Hereâs a summary of the non-discounted costs and coverage of different travel insurance policies for trip disruptions and inconveniences due to national disasters.
2. How do I choose the best travel insurance for an area prone to natural disasters?
Before you buy your travel insurance, you need to do research on the following:
- What kinds of natural disasters that area is prone to
- How your travel insurance policy defines natural disasters Â
The first question to ask is what kinds of natural disasters the place youâre visiting is prone to , if any. For example, is the area near an active volcano that might lead to a volcanic eruption? Does it sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where 90% of the worldâs earthquakes take place?
At this point, also look out for disaster warning announcements âif youâre forewarned that a natural disaster may occur but still go on the trip, you wonât be able to make insurance claims.
Additionally, donât forget about natural disasters that you donât hear about as often, such as hail, ice storms, landslides, heat waves, and wildfires. These are important to consider because not everyone may consider them natural disastersâincluding your insurers.
Once you know what natural disasters your destination area is prone to, check if your travel insurance policy defines them as natural disasters . Some insurers may limit their claims to trip disruptions due to specific disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes and tsunamis. If you have to cancel your trip due to a heat wave but your insurance policy doesnât consider that a natural disaster, your claims wonât be approved.
For example, here’s how “natural disaster” is defined by AIG travel insurance :
Comparatively, MSIG travel insurance  listed fewer types of natural disasters as examples and described natural disasters as natural events with catastrophic effects:
A good rule of thumb is to choose a travel insurance policy with a broad definition of natural disaster . Donât assume this is always the case, especially if youâre buying travel insurance from an airline.
3. What are some things that travel insurers might exclude?
Travel insurers generally define natural disasters as any event or force of nature which has catastrophic consequences on the environment, finances or human life.
Most types of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, typhoons, tsunamis, hurricanes and so on can fall under this category if they are serious enough. If you feel light tremors causing no damage, youâre unlikely to be able to make a claim.
Do note, however, that many insurers have exclusions on nuclear risks and exposure to nuclear radiation , even if this was caused by a natural disaster. For example, the Tohoku earthquake in 2011 caused the meltdown of three nuclear reactors, leading to the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Insurance would cover you for the earthquake, but may not cover you for the nuclear disaster.
The most important thing to note is that most insurers will not cover you if you already knew about the natural disaster risk in the area, but decided to book the trip or buy the travel insurance policy anyway . Insurers will usually include such announcements as travel advisories or warnings, such as this one from FWD:
So letâs say you have already read in the news that a volcano is about to erupt in a certain destination, and you go ahead and book a trip there anyway. If you end up having to cancel your trip because the volcano erupted, you are unlikely to get reimbursed for your travel expenses.
4. How do I make a travel insurance claim if a natural disaster strikes?
Recall that insurance policies donât have a claim category for natural disasters. Instead, youâll usually have to make a claim under one of the following:Â
- Travel cancellation : You are unable to depart for your trip due to unavoidable, unforeseen circumstances.
- Travel postponement : You already booked your trip, but are forced to change your travel dates and book another ticket for a later date.
- Travel delay : You end up departing for your trip at a later time than scheduled, e.g. due to a delayed flight. Insurers stipulate the exact number of hours that count as a delayâusually 6 hours. Note: Donât mix travel (i.e. flight) delay up with baggage delay !
- Trip curtailment/shortening : You are already on your trip, and have to cut it short due to an unexpected event that happened during the trip.
Pro tip : You don’t have to pore through each travel insurance policy wording to find out these claim limits! View them easily on our MoneySmart travel insurance comparison page.
What kinds of expenses can be claimed under the categories above? Typically, a travel insurance policy should pay for additional travel and accommodation expenses incurred should your trip be disrupted due to a natural disaster in the country youâre in or travelling to.
If a natural disaster does occur while youâre travelling ( choy! ), contact your insurer as soon as possible, and preferably before incurring additional expenses like hotel bookings. They will advise you on the documentation you need to provide in order to make a claim, which might include receipts or police reports.
Finally, this has nothing to do with insurance, but itâs a good idea to call the Singapore Embassy in the country youâre in and ask for emergency contacts in case you need urgent consular assistance. You should also eRegister your overseas travel with the MFA so they can search for you if you go missing in any natural disaster ( choy! ).
5. Is it safe to travel to areas prone to natural disasters?
As we mentioned earlier, your insurance claims wonât be approved if you were forewarned about a natural disaster risk but chose to go on your trip anyway. So in this case, if you havenât booked your tickets yet, you probably shouldnât. But what if youâve already booked your flight? Is it safe to go on your trip? Will you be refunded if flights are cancelled?
That was exactly what happened in October 2017, when it was announced that Mt. Agung in Bali was expected to erupt for over a month. After the last eruption in 1963 killed over 1,100 people, everyone in 2017 who booked a ticket to Bali was left wondering: Will I get killed if Mt. Agung erupts again? Should I still travel to Bali? If so, what can I do to protect my safety?
If a disaster warning surfaces after youâve booked your tickets, hereâs what you need to know:,Â
- Itâs generally safe to travel to another area in that country far from the disaster threat. In the case of Mt Agung, there are tourist spots in Bali far away enough to not be affected by the volcano. So if you donât have plans to travel anywhere near the Bali volcano, you can still go ahead with your travel plans. Furthermore, the authorities will clear out people in the danger zone, and will put up red alert exclusion zones where the lava and ash may potentially reach. So, if youâre ever stumbling too near the danger zone, youâll definitely know.
- Flights will be cancelled and rescheduled by your airline. If the situation gets bad, your airline will cancel their flights to destinations near where the natural disaster is expected to occur. Flights booked that are deemed unsafe to proceed will likely be rescheduled without any additional fees. Of course, this is subjected to availability and fare differences. Alternatively, some airlines may also allow refunds.
- Airports will be closed if the natural disaster occurs nearby. In the case of Mt. Agung in Bali, the volcano erupted on 26 November 2017, leading to the closure of the Ngurah Rai International Airport because of the ash cloud. While ideally youâd be ferried to other airports in neighbouring islands to take your flight out, thereâs also the chance that a widespread eruption might affect road travel and neighbouring airports too. If the eruption warning came when you were already in Bali, your insurance will cover your expenses while youâre stranded.
