Who Owns QuikTrip Now? An In-Depth Profile of the Private Convenience Store Giant

QuikTrip, commonly known as QT, has grown from a single convenience store in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1958 into one of the most successful private retail and gasoline chains in America. This comprehensive profile will explore QuikTrip‘s origins, business model, store experience, community impact, and future outlook.

Still Privately-Owned by Founding Families After 60+ Years

Many companies start out privately owned but eventually go public or get acquired. However, QuikTrip remains a private company controlled by the direct descendants of its founders over 60 years later.

QuikTrip was founded in 1958 by Burt Holmes and Chester Cadieux when they opened the first "Kwik Kafe" convenience store in Tulsa.

The original store sold basic convenience items like milk, bread, cigarettes, and snack foods to customers.

Within a few years, QuikTrip expanded into gasoline and formally established its brand name.

Impressively, the Holmes and Cadieux families still own over 95% of QuikTrip shares today.

Staying private has allowed QuikTrip to focus on long-term success rather than short-term profits to please public shareholders. The company maintains its culture and values.

According to financial data company PrivCo, QuikTrip generates an estimated $11.3 billion in annual revenue and has 24,000 employees as of 2017.

Combining Family Ownership With Professional Management

While QuikTrip‘s ownership structure is family-based, its executive leadership team includes retail veterans who ensure professional management.

Chet Cadieux , grandson of founder Chester Cadieux, serves as CEO and Chairman of the Board. He represents the 3rd generation of family leadership.

Mike Thornbrugh joined QuikTrip in 2012 as President and COO after over 30 years in the retail industry.

Other top leaders include the CFO, Chief People Officer, VP of Real Estate, VP of Food Services, and VP of Marketing.

This balanced leadership approach maintains QuikTrip‘s unique privately-held culture while driving continued growth.

QuikTrip‘s Massive National Footprint and Steady Growth

QuikTrip has grown rapidly from its humble single-store beginnings into a convenience retail giant:

The company opened its 100th location in 1984, 26 years after the first store.

By 2004, QuikTrip had reached 500 stores, crossing into new states beyond its Oklahoma home base.

Over just the past 10 years, QuikTrip has almost doubled its portfolio to over 900 stores across 14 states.

QuikTrip‘s Store Count Over Time

This rapid expansion has been fueled by customer loyalty and QuikTrip‘s excellent reputation. The company consistently replicates its successful store model as it enters new markets.

While QuikTrip originated in Oklahoma, it has expanded across the southern and midwestern U.S. Major concentrations exist around Atlanta, GA; Phoenix, AZ; St. Louis, MO; and Tulsa, OK.

Much More Than Gas – QT‘s Diverse Offerings Under One Roof

The average QuikTrip store provides far more than just gasoline to customers:

Fueling: Unleaded gasoline as well as diesel fuel for trucks with high speed pumps.

Food & Drinks: Freshly made food like pizza, sandwiches, and breakfast; custom soda and coffee stations.

Convenience Items: Drinks, snacks, lottery, cigarettes, grocery staples, healthcare items, and automotive products.

Amenities: ATMs, air filling stations, trash disposal, laundromats, car wash services, and other amenities.

By combining all of these offerings under one roof, QuikTrip provides a true one-stop-shop experience that is convenient, consistent, and cost effective.

Food and beverage offerings in particular have expanded over the years, now accounting for over 40% of sales.

QuikTrip Capitalizes on Retail Technology and Innovation

While founded in 1958, QuikTrip takes an innovative, technology-driven approach to modernizing its stores and operations:

Self Checkout: Touch screen kiosks allow customers to skip the line and check out purchases conveniently.

Food Preparation: Stores utilize specialized kitchen equipment to freshly prepare menu items rather than rely on pre-packaged food.

Supply Chain: QuikTrip uses data analytics to forecast demand and optimize inventory across 900+ stores.

Cybersecurity: With growing digital payments, QuikTrip heavily invests in systems to protect customer data.

Sustainability: Some stores offer EV charging stations, alternative fuels like propane, solar panels, and more.

These innovations help QuikTrip offer new services while maintaining its reputation for speed, quality, and customer service.

Giving Back to Local Communities

QuikTrip aims to positively impact communities, not just conduct business. Some initiatives include:

Charity Golf Tournament: QuikTrip‘s annual golf fundraiser has generated over $5 million in donations to youth nonprofits since 1991.

QT Kitchens: QuikTrip donates fresh unsold food from its stores to community food banks daily through this sustainability program.

SmartWay Partnership: QuikTrip joined the EPA program to reduce supply chain environmental impact and transportation emissions.

Water Conservation: QuikTrip‘s closed-loop car wash water recycling systems save over 27 million gallons of water annually.

EV Charging Stations: Over 100 QuikTrip stores have added electric vehicle charging stations to promote sustainable transportation.

These programs aim to create positive local impacts and uphold QT’s community-oriented values.

Analysts See Continued Growth Potential in New Markets

QuikTrip still has ample room to grow its national store footprint:

Management believes the chain can eventually exceed 4,000 total stores, 4X its current size.

New markets like Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and the Northeast offer expansion possibilities.

Alternative store formats besides gasoline locations provide additional growth channels.

QuikTrip is building its brand in new regions and converting more occasional customers into loyal regulars.

According to Forbes, QuikTrip generates over 50% more revenue per store than its average convenience store competitor. Its track record of success supports aggressive calculated expansion.

Projected QuikTrip Store Growth

Conclusion: Still Dominating the Convenience Space

From its first Tulsa location in 1958, QuikTrip has grown into one of the most admired and successful convenience retail chains. The company‘s consistent quality, innovations, and customer loyalty have fueled explosive store growth. Now with over 900 locations and $11 billion in sales, QuikTrip continues growing its national footprint. Its privately-held ownership structure provides stability, while experienced retail leaders ensure professional operations and evolution. With convenience stores remaining a major retail channel, expect QuikTrip‘s dominance to continue in the years ahead.

QuikTrip’s Investment in Retail Employees Pays Off

  • Unusual for a retailer, QuikTrip offers its operational employees above-average wages, job security, and significant benefits.
  • By using operational efficiencies and standardization, QuikTrip reduces complexity to create higher employee productivity and fewer errors.
  • By investing in employees and giving them more responsibility, QuikTrip enjoys a competitive advantage in service and benefits from continuous process improvement.

It's a much believed assumption in the retail world: If you're going to compete on the basis of low cost, then you can't afford to invest in your employees.

Extensive training—who has the time to give? Regularly scheduled hours?—way too inflexible. Benefits?—forget it! Better to trim schedules and leave vacant positions unfilled for immediate, measurable savings. That's the retail way. Moreover, the costs of understaffing aren't easily quantifiable; who can say how many customers are lost to long lines or stock-outs?

“You can invest in your people and offer low prices."

But now a growing group of retailers is challenging this notion of an industry built on the backs of crummy jobs, very prosperous companies that include Costco, Mercadona, Trader Joe's, and QuikTrip. What do they know that their competitors don't?

In a new case study on QuikTrip, Harvard Business School professor Zeynep Ton goes behind the scenes to discover how the Tulsa, Oklahoma—based chain of convenience stores manages to outperform its competitors while maintaining a loyal workforce of over 10,000 employees. These workers enjoy above-average wages, job security (the chain has never had layoffs), and benefits including health insurance, performance bonuses, and paid vacation—all relatively rare in the industry.

Blueprint For Transformation

The QuikTrip (QT) case , taught in the MBA course Coordinating and Managing Supply Chains, offers a blueprint on how retailers can combine the best of both worlds. Ton says the key is making the right operating decisions. "You can invest in your people and offer low prices," she says. "And guess what? You'll have a service advantage too."

For QuikTrip , that advantage is evident to customers in easy-to-navigate stores with organized shelves, clean bathrooms and parking lots, along with quick, friendly service. The result? In 2010, its by-store profit was almost double that of the top quartile of competitors. Since its founding in 1958 by Chester Cadieux and Burt B. Holmes, QuikTrip has opened over 500 stores in 11 metropolitan areas; 33 more are planned to launch this year.

Like Mercadona, a Spanish supermarket chain that Ton profiled in a case last year, QuikTrip systematically makes operating decisions that are good for employees, customers, and profits, she says. One principle is simplicity. Instead of customizing stores according to market, QuikTrip uses the same store layout everywhere, along with limited product variety. "The reduced complexity that results from these decisions leads to higher employee productivity and fewer errors," says Ton. "This standardization of stores and products also provides flexibility: QuikTrip can easily transfer employees and managers from one store to another."

QuikTrip makes decisions that increase costs in the short term but offer long-run benefits. For example, it invests in "relief employees," people who do not report to a specific store but are able to fill in for workers who get sick, take a vacation, or have an emergency. These people ensure that the stores are never understaffed. QT also cross-trains employees for multiple functions, making it possible to shift employees as need dictates.

"Instead of constantly changing the quantity of employees in response to workflow," Ton observes, "QuikTrip changes what employees do."

A daily activities worksheet lists tasks for each shift; managers can assign jobs to each employee, but more often than not the staffers are trusted to complete the work at their own pace. "The store is staffed knowing how long it takes to perform the various tasks," Ton says, explaining that employees frequently initiate a team-based, mutually accountable approach to their work. "It's not uncommon for them to step up for each other if there's a sick child at home or another family issue."

Conversely, workers who aren't doing their part hear about it sooner rather than later, whether it's from a manager or coworkers. "Slow movers are not meant to work at QuikTrip," says Ton. If an employee's performance isn't up to par, a manager investigates to find out how he or she can help (QuikTrip offers a variety of employee support programs). But if there are no real barriers and a worker's performance continues to suffer, the employee is cut loose.

Improving on the Fly

QuikTrip employees also engage in process improvement. For every position in the store, QT has resource groups where employees regularly get together and discuss problems and improvement opportunities. Many of these opportunities end up being implemented across the chain.

"It's amazing how clearly the employees' voices are heard," Ton adds. "In retail chains with hundreds or thousands of stores, retailers struggle to learn from employees who see problems, talk to customers, and have great ideas for improvement. But retailers like QT and Mercadona have created ways to institutionalize improvement. And employees greatly appreciate the fact that their voice is heard."

"Retailers like Mercadona and QuikTrip have created ways to institutionalize improvement.”

Ton notes that another commonality between QuikTrip and Mercadona lies in the strongly held values of its leadership. QuikTrip's CEO is Chet Cadieux, son of cofounder Chester Cadieux. In a classroom visit on the day the case was taught this year, the chief executive emphasized the obligation he feels to give back to QuikTrip's employees, as well as his commitment to avoiding operational or strategic changes that would compromise how workers are treated. (QuikTrip, like Mercadona, is a privately held company; in fact, "Remain privately owned" is listed as one of its core values.)

"Chet started out by working most positions at the stores including part-time employee and night assistant, so he knows how hard the jobs can be," Ton says. "He spends 50 days of every year visiting stores and employees and personally responds to any e-mail they send him."

All of these factors have made QuikTrip a regular on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For . Yet the company's focus on promoting from within presents a dilemma of sorts, given its purpose statement that includes the line "to provide an opportunity for employees to grow and succeed." When so many workers view the company as their career-long home, what happens when the chain runs out of available manager-level positions? The case notes that full-time employee turnover at QT is 13 percent, compared to 59 percent in the industry's top quartile and 109 percent in the industry overall. (Part-time employee turnover for QT is 36 percent, compared to 84 percent in the top quartile and 157 percent overall.)

"This issue of running out of management positions hasn't become too much of a problem yet, but at some point I imagine it could be," Ton surmises. "Opening stores in new markets is typically not a way to sustain internal promotions."

Growing Pains?

The case turns on the question of future growth for the chain in North Carolina, the next area targeted for expansion. Entering a new market is not cheap: QT's past experience has shown that it takes up to five years or about 50 stores before the brand begins to stand out in consumers' minds. A QuikTrip store costs an average of $4.2 million to build. Ideally, some of QT's qualified (and willing) Atlanta-area employees would want to relocate, but that would also cost money.

Another critical issue is whether QT can hire enough people who embrace the company's values and practices. "In our classroom discussion, Chet said that that factor would be the only limit to QT's growth," Ton recalls.

Such investments might take years to bear fruit—though patience has paid off in the past. "This is not an organization that focuses on short-term maximization of profits," says Ton. "By putting customers and employees before profits, QT enjoys long-term returns that puts it ahead of the competition." (As it happens, the company's current strategy is to open stores at a faster-than-usual rate; the first North Carolina QT will open this September, for a total of 20 to 24 stores in the first year.)

As the examples of success pioneered by QuikTrip, Mercadona, Costco, and Trader Joe's becomes more prevalent, is it possible that the tide will turn toward truly treating employees as "our most valued assets," as the saying goes? Ton hopes so.

"As a group, retail employees make up some of the lower-wage workers in our economy," she says. "This could be one way to begin to address the income inequality gap and offer some measure of stability to employees who don't always enjoy that quality in their work lives."

QuikTrip eyes early 2025 opening date in St. Joseph

Apr. 24—The QuikTrip project is rolling forward in St. Joseph, with construction set to begin this summer.

A representative for the convenience store told News-Press NOW that things are going according to plan.

"We are on track to open the location with no delays. The start of the construction will take place in the summer of 2024 with the hopes of opening in early 2025."

The city is on the same page. Clint Thompson, the city's planning and community development director, said in a statement to News-Press NOW that the project is moving forward, with construction set for the 5,300-square-foot building at the site of the former America's Best Value Inn just off Interstate 29 at 4312 Frederick Blvd.

"The city is processing the QT permit for (the) project and are working with them on a daily basis to get their plans approved. We have not had one sign of (the) project not moving forward," Thompson said.

Many are excited about the eventual opening of the store, including area resident Vicki Schneider.

Schneider said she has been looking forward to the arrival of a QuikTrip for a while, in part so she can easily enjoy her favorite go-to drink.

"They have the cappuccino I like. I like to have it with French vanilla creamer," Schneider said.

She loves to travel to the Platte City location when she can, and she hopes the planned QuikTrip will be successful in the area. She has some concerns about the accessibility of the eventual site since it's an area that sees high traffic.

"There's already a light and an exit from I-29. And if you're going to turn left from that property, that's going to be a mess because there's just a lot of traffic there," Schneider said. "I don't know how they're going to do that, so hopefully they will get it figured out. I'm not too worried, but I just don't want to be in the midst of 10 cars not knowing where they're supposed to go."

Work is being done to clear the old hotel before it is demolished, and then construction of the QuikTrip will begin.

QuickTrip or QT is a convenience store chain based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and primarily serves the Midwestern, Southern, and Southeastern United States and Arizona. QuikTrip has 949 locations across 16 states and 267 cities. With 230 locations, Texas has the most QuikTrip stores, followed by Georgia and Missouri, with 151 and 134 sites, respectively.

On a related note, many people confuse QuickTrip and Kwik Trip gas stations, but they’re not the same company. KwikTrip goes by a different name, Kwik Star, in states where QuickTrip operates.

For today’s QuickTrip gas prices analysis, we’ll look at several national stores and compare them with competing fuel brands. As per usual, we’ll use GasBuddy for reference.

Comparing QuickTrip Gas Prices

Update (7/28/2023): gas prices continue their upward trajectory over the last few weeks. according to aaa, the national per-gallon average for fuel is $3.732 and it’s on track to increase in the following months..

In QuickTrip’s headquarter state, Tulsa, OK, the company offers per-gallon pricing of $3.43 for regular and $3.63 for premium. For Tulsa, QuickTrip’s gas prices are hardly competitive as it failed to break into the top ten lowest prices in the area. The lowest gas price comes from Sam’s Club at $3.15 per gallon; next is Costco at $3.19 per gallon. QuickTrip didn’t get into the top ten cheapest gas prices for the whole state of Oklahoma.

For Tucson, AZ, QuickTrip’s gas price is $3.28 per gallon for regular fuel and $3.78 for premium. This location boasts the lowest gas price in Tucson and is tied with brands like Costco and Walmart at $3.28 per gallon. When you consider the whole state of Arizona, the same $3.28 per gallon price of QuickTrip remains the cheapest, which is quite impressive.

Heading to Kansas City, MO, QuickTrip offers a per-gallon price of $3.14 for regular and $4.09 for premium. Once again, QuickTrip has the lowest per-gallon price in Kansas City and is tied with Costco and Sam’s Club at $3.14. The rest of the top ten is populated by brands like BP, Conoco, Sinclair, and Casey’s. For the state of Missouri, QuickTrip may not be the lowest priced, but it did break into the top ten at $3.07 per gallon. The lowest price in the state is from MFA Oil at $2.59 per gallon.

Last but not least, QuickTrip has a per-gallon price of $3.09 for regular fuel in Waco, TX. While it’s not the cheapest fuel in Waco, it’s top-ten pricing from QT. The lowest gas prices are from Circle K and Valero at $3.04 per gallon, followed by Murphy USA and HEB at $3.09 per gallon. For the whole state of Texas, QuickTrip didn’t make it into the top ten, where the lowest price is from Exxon at $2.92 per gallon.

Overall, many of QuickTrip gas stations offer great prices and can compete with the cheapest gasoline in several areas. This is even more impressive since QT is a Top Tier gasoline, which we’ll talk about more below.

THE BEST USED MINIVANS ON THE MARKET

When it comes to hauling a lot of people and cargo, the minivan is hard to beat. We’ve factored in reliability, affordability, and functionality to create this curated list of the 8 best used minivans on the market today.

Is QuickTrip Gas Good Quality?

Some say that commercial fuel brands are essentially the same since they have to adhere to the standards set by the government. In reality, not all gasoline brands are created equal. In this case, Top Tier gasoline has been scientifically proven to provide benefits you won’t find in non-certified brands.

With that said, QuickTrip or QT is a Top Tier brand , meaning its fuel products are treated with an approved Detergent Gasoline additive at the right concentration. As a Top Tier brand, QuickTrip’s fuel will less likely help develop deposits in your engine’s fuel injectors and intake valves. The deposit buildup can affect your vehicle’s performance and fuel economy. According to research conducted by AAA, fueling with Top Tier gas will keep your engine 19x cleaner than standard fuel.

Many Top Tier brands are prominent companies like Chevron, Texaco, and Shell. However, QuickTrip manages to offer reasonable prices, despite being a Top Tier gas brand.

We looked into price, reliability, features, and more to create this list of the best used SUVs under $10k on the market today. Take a look - some of the best used SUVs have gone mostly overlooked or forgotten.

How to Save on QuickTrip Gas Prices With Fuel Rewards Program?

With skyrocketing gas prices, you need all the help you can get to save on gas. Like most prominent brand names, QT has a fuel rewards program that patrons can take advantage of to save on fuel. The primary way to save on QT gas is through one of its three types of reward cards:

  • QT Gift Cards: This works like a standard gift card that you may use for shopping from convenience stores and pumping fuel at QT’s gas stations. Gift cards are available and reloadable from any QT location and online.
  • QT Fleetmaster Cards: These cards work like your standard fuel cards, with extra perks like 5¢ or 3¢ savings per gallon at any QuickTrip locations. You may also avail of the Fleetmaster Plus card, which is accepted in 95% of fueling locations nationwide. However, you can only avail of up to 3¢ off per gallon.

There are several ways to register for the QuikTrip Fuel Rewards Program, and oddly enough, not one of them is to visit the store in person. Instead, you can sign up online/website, through the QuickTrip app, and by phone.

QuikTrip Gas Prices Update [7/28/2023]

AAA reports that the current national average for gas prices stands at $3.732 per gallon . Over the past few months, there have been fluctuations in gas prices, with a recent trend showing an upward trajectory in the last few weeks. According to CBS News , the current surge in gas prices can be attributed to the escalating prices in the global market.

When it comes to QuikTrip gas prices, the fuel chain remains one of the cheapest sellers of gas in many regions in the U.S. For instance, in Blue Springs, MO, QuikTrip offers a per-gallon price of $3.56 for regular and $4.06 for premium. However, QuikTrip prices are generally more expensive compared to chains like Costco, Circle K, and Fastrip.

With that said, experts believe that gas prices will continue to rise before they start to decrease, especially with the few more weeks of summer.

QuikTrip is closing its Midtown Atlanta store, says its partly due to crime

what is quik trip

ATLANTA — QuikTrip is closing its Midtown Atlanta store on Peachtree next month.

The company said it’s partly because of crime.

The QuikTrip on Peachtree was their first store that was not a gas station.

On Thursday, the company said it will be closing the store on May 3, because of safety concerns and low performance.

QuikTrip said they are closing its pilot concept and talked about what they’re doing to make a “meaningful change.”

A press release from the company stated that QuikTrip monitors performance metrics and expectations for each of its stores. Regarding the safety of customers and employees, after evaluating this location, it did not meet the company’s expectations.

They also provided a few public safety factors contributing to the closure of the location and ways to make change:

  • QT is taking a different approach than many in the industry and retail sector when it comes to addressing public safety issues.
  • Rather than simply closing stores, QT is taking a comprehensive approach to create meaningful change in the communities where it operates, including Atlanta.
  • QT is supporting and working with local community organizations that are making a positive impact on the root causes driving public safety issues like homelessness, addiction, and youth services.
  • QT is also making investments to support local law enforcement and first responders in the communities where their employees and customers live and work.

Aisha Jefferson, corporate communications manager for QuikTrip, said in a statement:

“Eight years ago, we opened our first non-gas store on Peachtree Street in Midtown Atlanta as a pilot concept. On May 3, we’re bringing that pilot concept to a close. While we will end our non-gas pilot in Midtown, QT is more committed to Atlanta than ever. In fact, while we continue to open new locations in the Greater Atlanta Metro area, we are in the process of identifying a new Atlanta location for a full-service QT that we hope to have online within the next 2-3 years. QT continues to invest heavily in Atlanta, not just in our stores, but in the community. Last year alone, QuikTrip made over $7 million in philanthropic investments across the greater Atlanta area toward homelessness, addiction, and youth services.”

They decided to use the pilot concept as a “learning experience” to help the brand as it expands.

QuikTrip Safe Place

A viral facebook post regarding quiktrip's partnership with the safe place initiative contains some dangerously inaccurate information about the scope of services provided., kim lacapria, published may 25, 2016.

Mixture

About this rating

QuikTrip has long partnered with the separate Safe Place initiative, providing assistance to at-risk youth and runaways.

QuikTrip and Safe Place are separate entities, and the former's locations do not have "safe rooms" or other hidden areas to conceal victims at immediate risk. QuikTrip employees are trained to contact shelters and locate other resources, but they are not necessarily equipped to act as first responders in complex situations involving sex trafficking or domestic violence.

On 22 May 2016 a Facebook user published the above-reproduced photograph and text, reporting that QuikTrip convenience store chain operates a comprehensive program known as "Safe Place" which entails providing secure holding areas for any person in imminent risk of physical harm:

This sign is posted at every QuikTrip. A "safe place" sign signifies that, if you are in any danger (domestic violence, sexual assault, lost children, sex trafficking, any fear for your safety) QuikTrip has a secluded and hidden area you can sit in until help arrives. Simply go in and tell any employee you are in need of a safe place. They are trained not to tell anyone you are there until the authorities arrive. Please share this for those who don't know what these signs mean or how they can get out. You never know what someone is going through, and hopefully you will never need to find a safe place... but if so, now you know.

The post implied that each and every QuikTrip location maintains a "secluded and hidden area" in which potential victims of violence could await help while safely secreted away from their attackers. The types of persons purportedly eligible for assistance by QuikTrip encompassed victims (or potential victims) of domestic violence, sex trafficking, or sexual assault, lost children, or anyone in "any fear for [their] safety." In short, readers of that post would likely infer that should they ever find themselves in a dangerous situation, the could be assured that the nearest QuikTrip location would be equipped to immediately deal with complex and possibly violent afety situations through the use of an on-site safe room.

QuikTrip's web site mentions the chain's involvement with the separate Safe Place initiative on their " community " page. According to that information, the ancillary services offered by QuikTrip are a useful and an integral part of the chain:

QuikTrip shares a vision of safe neighborhoods and communities. That’s why we’ve partnered with Safe Place to designate our stores as Safe Place sites for at-risk youth. Safe Place is a national nonprofit organization that provides safety for troubled or threatened youth. Since 1991, QuikTrip has been a designated Safe Place, where runaways and at-risk youth can come in off the street, receive food and drink, and wait for a volunteer from a Safe Place agency partner to connect them with professional help or a place to stay until their situation is resolved. In addition to our stores being Safe Place sites, QuikTrip provides grants to the local Safe Place agencies. We’re grateful for the valuable service Safe Place agencies and their volunteers provide. To learn more about Safe Place, visit nationalsafeplace.org .

However, QuikTrip's own page highlights their initiative as primarily serving "at-risk youth" and does not mention victims of domestic violence, sex trafficking, sexual assault, or anyone currently in fear for their safety. Moreover, the page makes no mention of a QuikTrip outlets' operating hidden or secluded spots wherein those in imminent danger may be safely hidden away from possible attackers, nor their employing specially trained employees equipped to handle complicated situations of impending violence or serious criminal activity.

We contacted QuikTrip's media relations department to ask about the issue, and a company representative confirmed that QuikTrip indeed participates in the Safe Place initiative, and that participation in that program is part of QuikTrip employee training. He also indicated that the program is primarily geared toward runaways and other minors without homes or safe location at which to stay.

After discussing the basics of that program we asked about other aspects of the program, primarily those pertaining to more severe criminal activity and people in immediate risk of danger (such as domestic violence or sex trafficking victims). He explained that individuals seeking QuikTrip's Safe Place assistance generally wait "behind the counter" with an employee for help to arrive, and no "hidden and secluded" areas are available at any QuikTrip locations to hide those being chased by attackers. Moreover, he affirmed that the program specifically targets homeless and at-risk youth, not individuals in imminent danger due to partner violence or human trafficking. The latter class of victims are a concern, as their seeking safety at QuikTrip locations which lack facilities and resources to effectively deal with them could itself lead those persons into harm.

A December 2014 Dallas Morning News article offers a more accurate description of the services QuikTrip is equipped to provide to at-risk youth, a description that may have served as the basis for the misleading information later circulated via Facebook:

Plano-based City House is working with QuikTrip locations in Collin and Denton counties, which have the yellow Safe Place signs posted prominently at their stores. Youths needing help can go to a QuikTrip 24 hours a day, seven days a week and request help. QuikTrip employees will immediately contact City House, which always has someone on call and available to help. The organization can help youths who are runaways or homeless, who are abused or kicked out of the house, or who are in any unsafe situation. Youth can also text the word “SAFE” and their current location (address, city, state) to 69866 for immediate help nationwide. They will be provided with the closest Safe Place location.

Although the QuikTrip Safe Place Facebook post includes some truthful and helpful aspects of QuikTrip's involvement with the Safe Place program, the myriad inaccuracies it contains means those who take it literally might inadvertently be placed at further risk. It isn't true that QuikTrip maintains safe rooms of any description for victims at risk of violence, and directing individuals who "fear for their (immediate) safety" to QuikTrip poses a danger not just to potential victims but to QuikTrip employees as well. Specific mentions of domestic violence and sex trafficking in particular conjure up images of people running and hiding from violent and threatening aggressors at QuikTrip outlets, but in almost all the dangerous situations listed in the Facebook post, (potential) victims would be best served visiting a police station rather than a convenience store.
