We’d all rather look well-groomed while traveling. However, any traveler is familiar with the headache of opening your suitcase only to find all your clothes limp and wrinkled.

The most convenient tool for addressing this problem is the travel iron. This handy tool is specially designed to fit in your suitcase and is powerful enough to keep you looking tidy. Choosing the best travel iron can be intimidating, but we will guide you through the whole process.

It’s important to know what to look for when you are setting out to buy a travel iron. Perhaps your foremost consideration will be the size and weight of the iron in order to maximize your luggage storage space.

But there are several other factors to keep in mind, including the iron’s power and heat control. Let’s dig a little deeper into these aspects.

Weight and Size

Travel iron weight and size

One of the biggest advantages travel irons have over regular ones is their weight. Made to be easily portable in your luggage, they weigh significantly less than regular irons. Look for an iron that weighs approximately 1 pound .

As for size, a travel iron is built to fit perfectly into your suitcase or travel bag. This convenient tool’s dimensions typically vary from 6 to 8 inches in length.

Ease of Use

Travel iron ease of use

When it comes to a travel iron’s ease of use, there are a couple of things you should be aware of. First, take a good look at the handle and see if it looks comfortable . A functional handle will go a long way in making your iron usable. Second, the best travel irons include motion-sensitive technology, helping you iron faster and with greater precision.

On top of that, there are some really interesting additional features you can look out for, like anti-drip or water-spraying features, both of which contribute to overall ease of use when it comes to ironing.

Heat Control

Travel iron heat control

If you’re looking at an iron without the option to control the heat level, think again. Any travel iron on your shortlist should have this ability. You don’t want to iron synthetic clothes with the same level of heat as cotton clothes.

Hot Tip: Look for an iron that has printed indicators on the swivel that denote exactly what each level is for.

If you are traveling to a different country, look for an iron with dual voltage . You will likely be dealing with different voltages, which can render your travel iron useless.

If you plug your iron into a higher voltage source, you run the risk of frying it.

Similarly, power is an important consideration when choosing a travel iron. Simply speaking, more powerful irons are made for heavier clothes or fabrics that are hard to iron. So, choose wisely, and if you plan on straightening heavier clothes like hoodies or jeans, find a 1,000-watt iron that can handle the job .

On the other hand, lighter clothes like t-shirts and shorts will not require a powerful iron.

Portability

Travel iron portability

Weigh the portability of your travel iron against its power output. You don’t want to have to make room for a huge iron in your suitcase at the expense of something else.

Most travel irons are specially designed to ensure maximum portability, but it’s still something to consider.

The 8 Best Travel Irons

The stainless-steel soleplate ensures a smooth glide over fabric, especially cotton and synthetic clothes. There is also an anti-slip heel on the bottom of the iron for maximum protection from unwanted contact .

  • Steam burst feature that eliminates hard wrinkles
  • Takes a bit more time to heat up

Full Review of the Top 6 Irons for Travel Available on the Market

With all the options available out there, finding the right travel iron can be a bit tricky. To help you with this process, here are brief overviews of the top options you can find out there!

1.  Rowenta DA1560 Pro Compact Steam Iron

Let’s start with one of the most reliable travel irons out there and our overall top pick. The Rowenta travel iron strikes an excellent balance between power and space efficiency, all while coming with several travel-friendly features. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for a small travel iron.

For starters, the iron features a stainless steel soleplate, which ensures excellent heat conduction through its 1,000 watts of power.

Besides dry ironing, the Rowenta is also great at steaming. It features a 2-ounce tank in addition to 200 micro steam holes. You can adjust the steaming between bursts and continuous steaming. It also has a vertical steaming option for added convenience.

The Rowenta is also a dual voltage travel iron, which you can adjust directly on the iron for a hassle-free conversion.

The iron comes with an ergonomic handle that you can fold when not in use for easier storage and packing.

Additionally, the iron comes with a travel pouch to keep it secure in one place as well as a one-year limited warranty for a worry-free purchase.

  • High wattage and adjustable temperature to work with a variety of fabrics
  • Adjustable steaming modes, including vertical steaming mode
  • Dual-voltage feature for reliability while traveling
  • A bit pricey

2.  Conair EZ Press Hand-Held Steam Iron

The Conair EZ Press Steam Iron is a mighty option to consider if you’re looking for powerful yet reasonably-priced iron.

With 800 watts of power, the handheld iron heats up pretty quickly and you can adjust the temperature to work with various fabrics. It also features a stainless steel soleplate made from stainless steel for easy gliding over garments.

The iron also has a continuous steam knob in addition to a steam burst button to flatten tough wrinkles. The only caveat here is that the water reservoir is a bit small, but can be enough for a quick session.

One of the clever features of this iron is the anti-slip heels that allow you to set it upright without tipping over.

Similar to the Rowenta, this one also comes with dual voltage options to use it comfortably anywhere.

  • Lightweight yet sturdy iron
  • Heat up quickly and reaches a decently high temperature
  • Features an 8-foot long cord for reliability
  • The water tank is a bit small

3.  Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot Travel Iron

Next up, we have an excellent travel iron to consider if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a travel iron, but still want a decent option.

Similar to the Conair EZ Press, the SunBeat Hot-2-Trot delivers up to 800 watts of power, which allows it to heat up quickly. You can also adjust the iron’s heat through a handy temperature controls dial, although not the highest on the list.

The iron is also easy to use and features a smooth non-stick soleplate for easy gliding over the garments while ironing.

The ongoing steam feature on the travel iron allows you to use it vertically or horizontally. However, its steam burst feature isn’t as powerful as others, which is one of its few drawbacks, besides being a little heavier in comparison to other handheld options.

One the plus side though, this iron has a fairly large water tank, which saves you the hassle of refills. It also comes with a one-year limited warranty for added reliability.

  • Best option for buyers on a strict budget
  • Switches voltages easily
  • Large water reservoir for long sessions
  • The water tank may leak if you overfill it

4.  DenniesCare Portable Steam Iron

If you’re all about size and portability, this one might be a good option to consider. The DenniesCare compact steam iron is one of the tiniest options on the market that doesn’t skimp on power and features.

Despite being only 1.1 lbs, the 700-watt iron can heat up in seconds and you can adjust its temperature easily through a control dial to optimize it depending on the fabric you’re working on.

The iron has a 2.7-ounce tank that allows you to use it as a steamer in less than half a minute. It also has a steam burst feature for added reliability. However, the iron will leak water if you use the steamer before it reaches the maximum temperature.

One of the few drawbacks of this highly compact option is that it comes with a relatively short power cord. This can be a little inconvenient in some situations, although this makes it a little easier to pack, so it highly depends on your personal preferences here.

  • Incredibly lightweight and a small size
  • Reliable steam function with burst feature
  • Large removable water tank for easy refills
  • The iron’s cord is quite short

5.  Sharper Image SI-755 Mini Steam Iron

Next up, we have the Sharper Image SI-755, which is an overall nice package that comes at a fair price.

One of the favorite features of this iron is its weight, as it only weighs 0.98 lbs, which makes it the lightest travel iron on the list.

The iron is also easy to use, thanks to its nonstick plate that glides easily over fabrics. It also has a steaming feature and comes with a measuring cup to fill up the water with a 1.2-ounce water tank.

The only drawback here is that this iron has only 350 watts of power, so it takes up to a minute to heat up instead of a few seconds. This makes it an affordable option if you don’t mind the wait.

  • Features various temperature and garment steamer settings to suit many fabrics
  • Compact size and ergonomic design that can stand vertically when not in use
  • Equipped with a dual voltage switch
  • Takes some time to heat up

6.  Conwang Dry/Wet Travel Steam Iron

Last but not least, if you want a highly versatile iron that also doubles as a steamer, you shouldn’t look further than the Conwang travel iron.

This one packs some serious power under the hood, as its wattage is the highest on the list, with up to 1,100 watts! This doesn’t only mean quick heat-up time, but also reliable performance.

The iron features a scratch-resistant ceramic soleplate, which provides even heat across its surface while being easy gliding over fabrics for a smooth performance.

The iron also comes with plenty of convenient features, but the most reliable one here is the steamer mode. You can rotate the iron 90 degrees to turn it into a full-blown steamer.

The only drawback here is that it lacks a dual-voltage mode, so it’s only suitable for flights across North America.

  • Turns into a vertical steamer
  • Powerful iron that heats up fully in seconds
  • Evenly distributed heat across its ceramic soleplate
  • Lacks a dual voltage mode

Things to Look for While Buying a Travel Iron

While you’re shopping for a mini travel iron, there are several features and essential aspects that you need to keep in mind. In this section, we’ll take a closer look at them.

Power

The power of iron is usually measured in watts. The higher the wattage, the faster the iron heats up and the higher the temperature it can reach, which allows you to work with a wider range of fabrics.

Ideally, you should go for a travel iron of 600 to 1,000 watts for reliable performance. On the other hand, options with lower wattage are usually lighter but can take up to 90 seconds to heat up, so you should only consider them if you don’t mind the wait.

Heat Settings

Most irons come with an adjustable heat system, which allows you to adjust the temperature depending on your needs.

For example, if you mainly work with cotton, linen, or denim, you’ll need a powerful iron with a high wattage setting.

On the other hand, if you work with delicate or synthetic fabrics like silk or polyester, you’ll need a low-temperature mode. A good iron will feature an accurate control dial to optimize the temperature accordingly.

Portability

A good travel iron must save you a lot of storage space while packing, so you should always consider the iron’s portability and compactness while buying it.

Make sure that the iron doesn’t weigh more than 1.5 lbs and fits within a small spot in your luggage.

A massive bonus here would be going for foldable options that you can store in even smaller spaces when not in use.

A dry iron can be quite effective at pressing clothes to remove wrinkles, but it might not do much against tough ones, and that’s where the steam comes in handy!

In addition to removing tough wrinkles, powerful steam also kills odor-causing bacteria, which helps in keeping your clothes fresh for longer.

Ideally, you should look for a travel iron with a continuous steam feature, which you can use horizontally or vertically as a steamer.

Bigger water tanks mean larger iron, but it also saves you the hassle of frequent refills. A good balance here would be around 1.5 to 3 ounces.

Dual Voltage

Dual voltage is another remarkable feature to consider having in your travel iron. While some countries have their electricity voltage set at 110-120V like the US, many other countries have their voltage set at 220-240V.

Using devices at the incorrect voltage can damage them irreversibly, so it’s always a good plus to have a device with dual voltage.

This means that you can flip a switch on the device to change its voltage to the corresponding country. That being said, you can ditch this feature if you only travel internally.

When handling hot irons, safety features are always a major consideration. To prevent any burns or fires, you should aim for an iron with auto shut-off and temperature control settings.

Auto shut-off turns the device off after it hasn’t been used for some time, while the temperature control setting allows you to set the optimal temperature for the type of fabric being ironed.

These features are not only convenient but also add an extra layer of security when travelling with your iron.

Value for Money

The cost of a travel iron should be considered. Generally, cheaper models tend to lack features like temperature control or dual voltage.

That being said, you don’t have to break the bank for an efficient device either; there are plenty of great value for money irons available in the market that come with all the necessary features.

PIN FOR LATER!

Best Travel Iron: Wrapping Up

This marks the end of today’s guide that shows you everything you need to know about travel irons and what to look for in the search for the best iron for you.

As you can see, there are several great options out there. However, if you’re looking for a reliable recommendation, you should consider the  Rowenta DA1560 Pro .

While it’s a bit pricier than others, it’s incredibly powerful, features a dual-voltage switch, and has a foldable handle.

However, if you’re looking for a more affordable option that still gets the job done, the  Sunbeam Hot-2-Trot  would be an excellent pick for you.

More than that, it’s also a handy tool to have with you if you’re on a budget. Use it to sterilize questionable water, cook noodles, boil eggs, and whatever else you’ll need to heat with water.

Top Product Overview

The best travel kettles, gourmia gk360 travel foldable electric kettle.

Gourmia GK360 Travel Foldable Electric Kettle - Fast Water Boiling - Food Grade Silicone - Small, Collapsible, Portable - Boil Dry Protection - .8 Qt - 110/120v - 820W - White

Space-savers are always excellent options whatever the destination. The  Gourmia GK360 Travel Foldable Electric Kettle  holds  800mL of water  which roughly amounts to one or two cups.

Thanks to its food-grade silicone body, the  collapsible design  makes this handy kettle uber portable and very easy to store.

This kettle has a  speed boil feature , boiling water faster than a microwave. It saves time and you can get it and go if you’re in a hurry. It also has a  sensor that shuts off the power  when the water level is too low. There’s also a lid-lock to keep boiling water from spilling and an integrated spout filter.

You have to be very careful when reaching around the kettle, however. The  chrome ring around the base tends to get extremely hot  when the kettle is on for a long time. It’s highly likely to be hot enough to scald you if you’re not careful.

  • Collapsible
  • Compact and portable
  • Simple on-off switch
  • Chrome ring at the base can get very hot

Product Information

  • Material: Food-grade silicone

Gourmia GK378 Dual Voltage Collapsible Kettle

Gourmia GK378 Dual Voltage Electric Collapsible Travel Kettle - 1.5 Qt Capacity - Foldable & Portable - Fast Boil - Water Boiler For Coffee, Tea & More - Keep Warm Function

Another great collapsible travel kettle from Gormia is the GK378 . Not only does it squeeze down into a very compact size, but it also works in two voltages!

Why is this so handy? Well, if you head anywhere overseas, the chances are big that that voltage of the local electricity could differ from where you live. For example, North America uses 120V, while Europe uses 220V. And if you take a normal kettle with you, it will either blow up or not work well (or at all). Not a great start to your travels!

Gormia also likes to provide high-grade materials and safety, using kitchen-grade silicone as well as integrating a dry boil cut-off to save you from any mishaps. Of course, I prefer stainless steel for kettles, but when you are on the go, that means more weight and space.

  • Light and compact
  • Great for travel (dual voltage)
  • Dry boil safety feature
  • Keep warm function
  • Quite small capacity
  • No stainless steel
  • Material: Plastic
  • Product Dimensions: 4 x 7 x 7.75 in
  • Capacity: 500mL
  • Safety Features: Removable Base, Auto-off

Bodum BISTRO Water Kettle

Bodum Bistro Electric Water Kettle, 17 Ounce, .5 Liter, White

The  Bodum BISTRO Water Kettle  is technically not a travel kettle. But at  4 x 7 x 7.75 inches , it’s definitely portable enough to function as one.

This kettle can hold  500mL of water . It has a water level window with different units of measurement so you’ll know exactly how much water you need wherever you are.

It’s also one of the funkier designs where kettles are concerned. With  four modern colors to choose from , this is for someone who wants a bit of pizzazz.

Since it’s not specifically designed as a travel kettle, it’s built with the conveniences of a regular kettle. This includes a  removable base . You can pour the liquid through a mesh-filtered spout without bringing the cord along with you.

There have been some safety issues in a few units. There was a  product recall in December  due to flimsy parts, but the new units seem to be trouble-free.  Make sure you get the new batches before purchasing .

  • Modern and funky design
  • Has all the perks of a regular kettle in a portable size
  • Safety issues in older units

Bonavita Dual Voltage 0.5L Travel Electric Kettle

BonaVoyage BV3825B05 Bonavita 0.5L Mini Kettle, Stainless Steel

This stainless steel kettle is very durable. It also won’t leave a plastic or metal taste in your drinks. It also looks quite pretty and you won’t mind leaving this perched on your office desk or kitchen table. Its  900-watt heating element  means quick heating in any situation, which is great when you want your cup of joe, right now!

The kettle has  boil-dry protection  that switches off the device when the water level is too low.

The only downside is that many reviewers are not giving this kettle glowing reviews.

  • Dual Voltage
  • Good design
  • Durable build
  • Dual voltage is not automatic
  • Toggling between 120 and 220 V is inconvenient
  • Material: Stainless Steel
  • Product Dimensions: 7 x 4 x 6.75 inches
  • Safety Features: Auto-shutoff, Boil-Dry Protection

NEME Travel Foldable Electric Kettle

NEME Travel Foldable Electric Kettle - Collapsible Water Boiler For Coffee Tea- Food Grade Silicone - Dual Voltage 110-220V - Detachable Power Cord - Portable Kettle 600ML (White)

Another collapsible find is the NEME Travel Foldable Electric Kettle – . It’s portable, durable, extremely lightweight. The catch? It’s a lot smaller than most of the kettles in this review.

It’s made from food-grade silicone, with a hard plastic base. And overall, it is easily collapsible and easily stored. Especially since the cord is removable and they give you a handy bag to store everything in.

Two other features of this travel kettle worth noting are that it is dual voltage so can be used inside and outside the USA. It also has Auto Dry Protection so that if you accidentally leave it boiling or switch it on with no water, it won’t continue to boil.

The biggest downside of this kettle is the capacity, which is only 18oz (555ml), however, this can also be an upside if that is all you need.

  • Small and compact
  • Small capacity
  • Material: Silicone

DCIGNA 0.5L Dual Voltage Travel Kettle

DCIGNA Electric Tea Kettle, 0.5L Stainless Steel Travel Kettle, Portable Hot Water Kettle, Auto Shut-off & Fast Boiling, Dry Protection, Suitable For Coffee, Tea, 110V/800W (Dark Blue)

Another great option, from a relatively unknown brand, is this dual voltage  travel kettle from DCIGNA . It’s handy in its size, at only 500mL (0.5L which is 17 oz). So enough to boil a few cups, but not so big you really can’t travel with it.

And with the dual voltage, you can take it anywhere overseas where the voltage is often different (220V in Europe, 110V in the USA for example. If you take the wrong one in either direction you either end up with a kettle that doesn’t boil, or it blows up! Neither is a great option.

Because this kettle uses a stainless steel container to boil the water, I am also a huge fan. Having owned dozens of kettles over the years, I now only accept and use stainless steel.

  • Dual voltage is not automatic (needs to be switched
  • Not a well known brand
  • Product Dimensions: 7 x 6.3 x 5.5 inches

Proctor Silex 40940 Compact Electric Kettle

Proctor Silex Compact Electric Tea Kettle, Water Boiler & Heater. 0.5 L, Cordless, Auto-Shutoff and Boil-Dry Protection, Stainless Steel (40940)

Another very simple and easy-to-use kettle that is also pretty small is this 16oz stainless steel option from Proctor Silex.

There is not too much to say about this kettle, as it doesn’t have any very fancy features like the collapsable or dual voltage ones. However, it does have auto-shutoff and dry boil protection, which gives me peace of mind. If you are on vacation or travel in your home country, then it could be just what you need.

What I love about models that are stainless steel is that they are easy to clean and don’t tend to affect the taste of my beloved coffee.

  • Easy toggle switch between 115 and 230 V
  • Comes with drinking cups
  • Cheap-looking and made of plastic
  • Material: Stainless Steel & Plastic
  • Product Dimensions: 8 x 5 x 7.5 in inches
  • Capacity: 500mL / 16oz
  • Features: Cord-free serving, Auto-shutoff, Dry-boil protection

What to Look For?

Travel kettles can hold anywhere from 500mL to 1L of water. Any bigger and it becomes less portable. Depending on how much coffee you need in a given caffeine session, solo travelers can usually make do with 500mL kettles to help keep everything as lightweight as possible.

There are dual voltage kettles that will help make traveling to different regions easier for you. So, if you do (or plan to) travel outside your country, this is a great investment.

Tech tip : In case you are not aware, various countries and regions have different voltages for their standard electricity. So, if you bring a kettle from one country to another and they have different voltages either

  • The kettle won’t work or will be insanely slow (best case scenario – not enough voltage)
  • The kettle will explode, melt or just fry the wires when you turn it on (too much voltage)

There is some more information  on this website  about how it works, and what you can use instead (hint, it’s painful to carry the other options).

Different materials mean different things. Plastic is usually cheaper and lightweight. Stainless steel is more durable and easier to clean. So, when you see these materials in the descriptions, you will know how to make a choice (cheap vs durable).

Silicone is used for handles or for collapsible kettles. It is also quite light and does not tend to break as easily as plastic.

Which Travel Kettle Is The Best For You?

For a simple gadget, there are a lot of options and several factors to consider when choosing the right travel kettle.

The  Gourmia  ticks all the boxes when it comes to travel. It is collapsible, dual voltage, and reasonably priced. So, if you need to save space, money and also potentially travel to various countries this is a great buy.

Gourmia GK360 Travel Foldable Electric Kettle - Fast Water Boiling - Food Grade Silicone - Small, Collapsible, Portable - Boil Dry Protection - .8 Qt - 110/120v - 820W (Black)

  • SPEED BOIL: Heat water in a flash for all of your coffees, teas, noodles and cereals. Faster than any out-dated microwave or stovetop pot.
  • COLLAPSIBLE DESIGN: Expands so you can fill and boil up to .8L of water, or easily fold and store away! Perfect to take along for perfectly piping hot water- wherever your travels lead you.

If space is not so much of an issue and you just want a reliable, simple travel kettle with enough capacity to pour for yourselves and maybe some friends,  the Bodum  is a decent buy.

It doesn’t have dual-voltage (which you don’t need if you stay within the US/Canada) or collapse, but it’s light and one of the cheaper options on the list. Bodum is also a very reliable brand.

  • Water kettle: Bistro water kettles are an effective and efficient way to boil the Exact amount of water needed in minutes; perfect for Coffee, tea and instant soups

No matter which one you choose, having the option to make your own tea or coffee on the road is something you will never regret. Especially when there are no take-out of decent options in the neighborhood :>

(Updated February 2024)

Ever since living in Australia, I’ve been a lot more keen on tea. As a part of the commonwealth, Aussies sure are tea lovers. Ever since, I’ve had to find ways to boil hot water in a pinch, wherever I go. I’ve used tons of different types of travel tea kettles in lots of different settings, from hostels to campsites to everything in between.

Here my list of the absolute best travel kettle options for the solo travelers. May you find an easy way to enjoy a cuppa wherever you are in the world with one of these portable kettles.

Finding the best travel kettle really comes down to your own travel style and what you pack. I’ll share with you all of my favorite travel kettle options based on my experiences.

1. Best Overall Travel Kettle: Sekaer Portable Electric Tea Kettle Travel Small Mini Coffee Kettle

Sekaer Portable Electric Tea Kettle

I love how it is so portable; you can tuck the cord into the canister while traveling. Fast boiling and energy-efficient, it’s ideal for quick morning routines or a busy lifestyle. Compact and portable, it fits easily in small spaces and is safe to use with auto shut-off and boil-dry protection. It’s also really damn cute with its little handle on top.

The only drawback is that you need 120V and at least 300W worth of power, so it could be tricky while camping or traveling abroad. For US travel in places with easy power access, this is a perfect little travel kettle.

2. Best Small Travel Kettle: Travel Kettle Electric Small Stainless Steel

Travel Kettle Electric Small Stainless Steel

I just really love this design and it seems like all of the reviewers do too. This portable electric kettle is made from stainless steel, ensuring durability and a clean taste. It features a 350ml capacity, which is ideal for personal use. The kettle operates at a power of 500 watts, which means that it can heat quickly. Its compact and sleek size makes it easy to pack and carry, fitting comfortably in luggage or backpacks. It also fits right into cup holders, which I love. The kettle also includes safety features like auto shut-off and boil-dry protection, making it a reliable and safe choice for travel.

3. Best For Camping: X Pot/Kettle

X Pot/Kettle

This collapsible kettle is for my campers and backpackers out there! You will need a heat source to boil the water, but that’s the beauty of it… you don’t need an outlet.

This kettle’s standout feature is its collapsible design, which, combined with a minimal weight of just 7.2 ounces, makes it hardly noticeable in your pack. It has a whopping 1.5L capacity, enough to cater to a group, and is made from heat-resistant silicone. The wide, stable base prevents spills at campsites, and reinforced handles make for easy carrying and use. The translucent lid aids in trapping heat for faster boiling, making it an efficient tool for quickly preparing hot drinks or meals.

4. Best Compact Electric Kettle: Foldable Portable Electric Kettle with Food Grade Silicone

Foldable Portable Electric Kettle with Food Grade Silicone

I like this kettle because it combines the space-saving collapsible silicone while also being an easy plug-and-go style kettle. The kettle has a dual voltage capability (110V/220V), making it suitable for international travel. I really like that it has a detachable power cord and a separable design for easy cleaning and storage. This is the best travel tea kettle option if you want something that doesn’t take up much space but functions like a traditional kettle.

5. Best For Tea Enthusiasts: Sekaer Travel Electric Tea Kettle

Sekaer Travel Electric Tea Kettle

If you’re super into tea-on-the-go, then this is a pretty nifty little kettle with an infuser basket built right in. It features a 350ml capacity, making it ideal for personal servings. It might be too small for serving others, but is great for people like me who don’t want to have a whole production just to make a cuppa tea. You just put your loose leaf tea in and then add water and plug it in when you’re ready to.

The kettle is crafted from food-grade 304 stainless steel and BPA-free materials, ensuring safety and durability. It operates at a power of 300 watts, allowing for rapid heating of water.

The kettle’s compact and lightweight design makes it perfect for travel, office, hotel rooms or home use. As for convenience, I like that it includes a detachable power cord and a 360-degree swivel base.

6. Best For Limited Space: Norpro Instant Immersion Heater

NEW Norpro Instant Immersion Heater

I’m lowkey obsessed with this little immersion heater. If you are tight on space (either on a road trip or backpacking around), then this is the most compact “kettle” you’ll find.

It works by being immersed directly into a cup or container of water or other liquids, quickly heating them to the desired temperature. The product is designed for ease of use, featuring a simple plug-in operation and a compact design that makes it easy to carry in a bag or suitcase. It’s an efficient solution for enjoying hot drinks or even soups on the go, in a hotel room, in nature, at the office, or at home.

7. Best Traditional Travel Kettle: IronRen 0.5L Portable Electric Kettle

0.5L Portable Electric Kettle

If you’re into the traditional experience of boiling liquids, then this stainless steel travel hot water kettle is perfect. It’s small and portable, yet shaped like an actual (modern) kettle. It features a stainless steel construction, making it super durable and easy to clean. The kettle has a surprising capacity of 0.5 liters, perfect for personal use or for small servings.

While I don’t love that it’s not collapsible and takes up quite a bit of space, it can also double as storage in your bags or suitcases. Think: tea bags, soup packets, and even small clothing items like socks.

My favorite part is that it boasts rapid boiling technology, allowing you to quickly heat water for coffee, tea, or instant meals. It also includes an automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection, making it a safe travel kettle that won’t accidentally burn the place down.

8. Kompoll Travel Electric Kettle

Kompoll Travel Electric Kettle

This travel kettle has the best features of pretty much everything on this list (except the collapsible silicone).

This fast boiling travel kettle means that you can quickly prepare hot beverages like tea, coffee, or even instant noodles and soup quickly and easily. The stainless steel construction of this mini electric kettle not only adds to its durability but also maintains the purity of water’s taste. Safety features like automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection give that peace of mind, especially when you’re in a hurry or multitasking.

Its separable power cord and compact size make it easy to pack and carry, fitting snugly in any travel bag. This mini travel kettle is ideal for those who want the comforts of a hot drink while traveling, without the bulk and hassle of larger appliances.

9. Travel Foldable Electric Kettle

Travel Foldable Electric Kettle

Another collapsible travel tea kettle makes the list with tons of raving reviews. While I’m not personally a silicone fan (I feel like it impacts the taste), this collapsible tea kettle is one of the most popular ones on the market right now. This kind of reliability and space-saving design is worth mentioning as it makes its way to my list of recommended kettles.

The kettle is made from food-grade silicone, ensuring safety and durability. It has a dual voltage capability (100-120V and 220-240V), making it suitable for international travel. With a capacity of 600ml, it can quickly boil water for coffee, tea, or instant meals. The kettle also includes safety features like boil-dry protection and an automatic shut-off mechanism, ensuring safe usage.

How To Choose The Best Portable Kettle For Travel

When you’re on the move, having the right portable kettle can make all the difference in enjoying your favorite hot beverage or quick meal. Here’s what to consider to find the perfect travel companion:

  • Size and Capacity: Choose a kettle that’s compact enough for easy packing, yet has sufficient capacity for your needs. A 0.5 to 1-liter kettle usually strikes a good balance.
  • Weight : Opt for lightweight designs, especially if you’re backpacking or have limited space.
  • Material : Stainless steel kettles are durable and maintain heat well, but may be heavier. Silicone or plastic kettles are lighter and often collapsible, ideal for saving space.
  • Boiling Speed: Look for a kettle that boils water quickly to save time, particularly important when you’re on a tight schedule.
  • Temperature Control: If you’re particular about your tea or coffee, consider a kettle with variable temperature settings.
  • Safety Features: Essential features include automatic shut-off and boil-dry protection to prevent accidents.
  • Power Source: Electric kettles are convenient but require a power source. For off-grid adventures, consider a kettle that can be used on a stove or campfire.
  • Dual Voltage: If traveling internationally, a dual voltage kettle is a must to accommodate different electrical systems.
  • Ease of Cleaning: A kettle with a wide opening is easier to clean, a crucial factor for maintaining hygiene while traveling.

Types Of Travel Kettles

Travel kettles come in various types to suit different travel needs and preferences. Understanding these types can help you choose the right one for your adventures:

Electric Travel Kettles

Electric travel kettles are ideal for travelers staying in hotels or locations with guaranteed electricity. They are a great choice for those who prioritize convenience and specific beverage temperatures, but not as suitable for off-grid adventures or lightweight packing.

  • Many electric travel kettles offer automatic shut-off and temperature control, enhancing safety and convenience .
  • Temperature control allows for heating water to the precise temperature needed, perfect for different types of teas and coffees.
  • These kettles require access to a power source , limiting their use in areas without reliable electricity.
  • They tend to be bulkier and less convenient for lightweight or compact travel.

Collapsible Kettles

A collapsible kettle is ideal for travelers who need to save space and reduce weight in their luggage, such as backpackers or those traveling with carry-on only. They are less suited for travelers who prefer more durable, feature-rich kettles.

  • Made from flexible materials like silicone, these kettles can collapse down, making them highly space-efficient . This feature is particularly beneficial for backpackers or travelers with limited luggage space.
  • Generally, collapsible kettles are lighter than other types, adding minimal weight to your travel gear.
  • The flexible materials might not be as durable as the hard materials used in traditional kettles.
  • They often impact the taste of your beverage.

Dual Voltage Kettles

Dual voltage kettles are ideal for frequent international travelers who move between countries with different electrical systems. They are less necessary for travelers staying within regions that have a standard voltage system.

  • These kettles are designed with the international traveler in mind. They can switch between different voltage standards (typically 110v and 220v), making them suitable for use in various countries without the need for a separate voltage converter.
  • This feature provides peace of mind and convenience , as you can use the same kettle in multiple destinations.
  • The versatility of dual voltage kettles often comes at a higher price point compared to standard kettles.
  • Some models may require manual switching between voltages, which can be a bit more complex to handle for some users.

Stovetop Kettles

These kettles are ideal for camping, hiking, or off-grid travel where electricity is not an option. They are less convenient for travelers who prefer quick, efficient boiling and have access to electricity.

  • Stovetop kettles are perfect for environments without electrical access . They can be used on a camp stove or open flame, making them highly versatile in various outdoor settings.
  • Often made from durable materials , these kettles are designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor use.
  • They may take longer to boil water compared to electric kettles, especially in windy or cold outdoor conditions.
  • Stovetop kettles can be bulkier and heavier, which might be a consideration for those needing to pack light.

Car Kettles

Car kettles are ideal for road trippers and campers who spend a lot of time in or near their vehicles. They are less practical for travelers without access to a car or those who need to boil water quickly.

  • Car kettles are designed to plug into a car’s cigarette lighter socket , making them a convenient option for brewing hot beverages on the go.
  • They offer the flexibility to make hot drinks anytime during road trips or when camping near your vehicle.
  • Their usability is confined to the car, as they rely on the vehicle’s power system .
  • These kettles typically have lower power output , resulting in slower water boiling times compared to standard electric kettles.

Mini/Compact Kettles

These kettles are ideal for solo travelers or those who prioritize space-saving gear. They are less suited for travelers who need to boil larger quantities of water or prefer more robust, feature-rich kettles.

  • Mini or compact kettles are smaller in size and capacity, making them a perfect choice for solo travelers or those with minimal packing space.
  • Their small size translates to easy packing and handling , making them highly convenient for on-the-go use.
  • The smaller size means a lower water capacity , which might not be suitable for making multiple beverages at once.
  • They may not have the same power as larger kettles, potentially leading to longer boiling times .

Stainless Steel Kettles

Stainless steel kettles are a great choice for travelers who value durability and heat retention over portability. They are less ideal for those who are backpacking or need to minimize their travel gear weight.

  • Stainless steel kettles are known for their robustness and longevity . They can withstand frequent use and are less prone to damage compared to kettles made from other materials.
  • These kettles are excellent at maintaining water temperature , keeping your water hot for longer periods.
  • Stainless steel kettles are generally heavier , which might be a consideration for travelers who need to keep their luggage light.
  • The material can get quite hot to the touch , requiring careful handling when boiling water.

Final Thoughts

Finding the best travel kettle comes down to how much space you have and your power source. I personally like the immersion heater and travel electric tea kettles . These suit my lifestyle the best and work well with a portable espresso maker . Most hotels have some way to boil hot water, anyway, so I haven’t found a need for a travel kettle when in hotels. If I were to travel often with a suitcase, versus a backpack on on a road trip, then I’d probably opt for a collapsible kettle to save space in my luggage. So what’s the best travel tea kettle for you?? Lemme know in the comments 🙂

Is an electric kettle allowed on flights?

Yes, electric tea kettles are allowed on flights. We have included the top electric travel tea kettles here that are allowed in both carry-on and checked luggage for flights. An important consideration, is if there is also a battery on the electric tea kettle, in which case you would only want to pack it in your carry-on luggage.

What is the best dual voltage travel kettle?

When searching for the best dual voltage travel kettle, it’s essential to consider your specific needs and preferences. Above I have listed two great dual voltage options. The Collapsible Mini Travel Kettle is manual dual voltage. And my top overall pick for the Best Travel Kettle is an auto dual voltage.

Is an electric kettle allowed in hand luggage?

Yes, an electric tea kettle is allowed in your hand luggage. We’ve included a couple of the top electric tea kettles that are perfect for hand luggage, and meet TSA requirements.

How many watts does my electric kettle need to be?

If you are traveling in the US, you will want the voltage to be 110v. If you are traveling abroad, having voltage options up to 220v-240v as well, makes the electric kettle more versatile. I also recommend the option of an automatic voltage converter on your tea kettle, so you don’t have to worry about remembering to switch it manually. Or having to confirm the country’s voltage before using it. Here is a comprehensive list of voltage by country .

Why is my electric kettle not working?

Your electric kettle may not be working for a number of reasons. The first thing to check, especially when traveling, is that the voltage is correct for the country you are in. Second, you will want to test a different outlet to see if it a problem with the power source. Or you can try plugging something else into the outlet to see if it functions properly. This is usually the issue if the power light doesn’t come on at all. Third, if the power light does come on but it isn’t heating, it is likely a faulty heating element or has been damaged. In which case you will want to contact the supplier to verify the warranty and next steps for repair or replacement.

Is an electric kettle faster than the stove?

Yes, an electric kettle is generally faster than a stove for boiling water. Electric kettles are designed to quickly heat water to boiling point using an electric heating element, whereas a stove may take longer due to factors such as the size of the pot and the type of stove. However, electric kettles with lower voltage (such as 12v electric kettles for cars) are usually a bit slower than a stove.

Electric kettle vs. microwave?

An electric kettle is generally a better option than a microwave for heating water. Electric kettles are faster to heat and typically have temperature control options. Electric kettles also usually have safety features like auto-shut off. While a microwave can also be used to heat water, it may take longer and can be less efficient than an electric kettle.

It’s small shape and lightweight design makes it easy to store away in a suitcase or backpack, while still providing all of the necessary features to make a perfect cup of tea or coffee while on the go. The sleek design is comprised of a single-piece stainless steel body, so there are no parts to lose or misplace. It also fits neatly into the cup holders of most cars, so you can make your favorite hot beverage while on the road. The sturdy handle allows for comfortable and secure pouring, while the wide base enables it to sit firmly on any flat surface. Additionally, the small size allows it to be easily stored and quickly retrieved, so all of your hot beverage needs can be met in a matter of minutes.

  • Versatile Power Options

Another great benefit of owning a travel kettle is its versatile power options. These kettles are designed for convenience and portability, and that is certainly evident in the range of power sources they can use. For example, many models can be powered by a car’s cigarette lighter socket. This gives you the freedom to boil water while on the go. Additionally, some models can be powered by USB sockets, making them ideal for people who are often on the road with their laptops. This means you can enjoy your hot beverage quickly and easily wherever you are. Furthermore, they can be powered by wall sockets as well, making them perfect for the office or home. With a travel kettle, you can enjoy hot water anytime, anywhere.

Types of Travel Kettle

Electric travel kettles are a handy and convenient way to make a hot drink wherever you are. Battery-operated travel kettles are great for those who are always on the go and need a quick and easy way to make a hot beverage. Solar-powered travel kettles are the perfect choice for those who are looking for an eco-friendly way to make tea or coffee while traveling.

  • Electric Travel Kettles

Having discussed the benefits of owning a travel kettle, we now move on to the types of travel kettles available on the market. First, there are electric travel kettles. Generally, these kettles are made of stainless steel and have a wide base with an adjustable temperature setting. The base connects to the wall through an AC outlet and provides a steady flow of power to the kettle. The power cord usually varies in length, allowing users to place the kettle in desired spots without having to worry about being too close to the wall.

Electric travel kettles also come with a variety of settings that allow users to select the desired temperature. Some of the more advanced models even come with a digital display that allows users to check the temperature and the remaining time until the water is boiled. With such advanced settings, users can enjoy their hot beverages with the temperature they prefer.

Finally, electric travel kettles are also known for their safety. Many models come with features that allow them to automatically shut off when the water is boiled, preventing any accidents or spills. In addition, these kettles are equipped with an auto-off switch that turns the power off after a certain amount of time, saving energy and money.

  • Battery-Operated Travel Kettles

Building on the many benefits of owning a travel kettle, let us now turn our attention to the different types of travel kettles available. One of the most popular types is the battery-operated travel kettle.

These kettles are ideal for campers and hikers who do not have access to an electrical power source. They are also great for those who are always on the go, as the battery-operated kettles are lightweight, making them easy to carry around with you.

A battery-operated travel kettle typically uses two or three D-cell batteries. Depending on the model, the battery life can range from three to seven hours. Most of these kettles come with an automatic shut off feature, allowing you to conserve battery life. The performance of a battery-operated travel kettle can range from one to two cups per battery. The water temperature can reach up to 80 degrees Celsius.

The battery-operated travel kettle is an ideal solution for those who are constantly on the move and are looking for a convenient and easy-to-use travel kettle.

  • Solar-Powered Travel Kettles

Ready to take your travel kettle to the next level? Solar-powered travel kettles are an innovative and eco-friendly way to ensure that you always have access to hot water on your adventures. With no need for electricity or batteries, these kettles can be charged up anywhere there’s access to the sun, making them perfect for long trips off the beaten path.

The design of solar-powered travel kettles varies between brands, but most feature a foldable, lightweight frame with a built-in thermometer. By leaving the kettle outside, it will slowly fill up with hot water as it charges throughout the day. This makes it easy to fill up with water in the morning and have it ready by the afternoon.

The portability of solar-powered travel kettles makes them a must for campers, hikers, and other traveling adventurers. With the ability to charge while you’re on the go, solar-powered kettles can be used for activities like washing dishes, making tea, and more. Plus, they’re incredibly easy to use – just pour in the water and let the sun do its job!

Features to Look For in a Travel Kettle

When considering a travel kettle, three features in particular are worth considering: water capacity, temperature control and automatic shut-off feature. Offering a large capacity, a travel kettle should be capable of providing enough water for multiple servings of coffee or tea. Temperature control is also important, allowing users to adjust the water temperature to the desired temperature for the perfect cup. Additionally, an automatic shut-off feature prevents boiling the water for too long, ensuring safety and energy efficiency.

  • Water Capacity

When choosing a travel kettle, the water capacity should be at the top of the priority list. This is particularly important if multiple people will be using the kettle, or if one is looking for a larger capacity for multiple uses. After all, it’s no use purchasing a travel kettle that is too small and is unable to meet the needs of the user.

For example, if one is looking to make enough tea or coffee for two people, a travel kettle with a capacity of 500ml will be sufficient. However, if one is looking to use the kettle for other purposes such as boiling water for cooking, it’s best to opt for a larger capacity, one that can hold up to 1 liter of water. This will provide ample capacity for a number of uses, and will ultimately be more efficient in the long run.

When considering the water capacity of a travel kettle, it’s important to note that there are a number of different sizes available. Therefore, it’s important to think about the purpose that the kettle will be used for and choose a size that is appropriate. By taking these factors into consideration, one will be able to find the perfect travel kettle that is suited to their individual needs.

  • Temperature Control

Having discussed the types of travel kettles available, it’s time to explore some important features to consider when selecting a travel kettle. One of the most important features to consider is the temperature control option. A great travel kettle should have a temperature control option, which will let users customize the temperature of the water according to their needs.

Temperature control kettles come with a dial or a digital display that allows users to adjust the temperature of the water. This is useful for those who need to brew tea at a specific temperature or those who need to heat up water with a precise temperature for other needs. The temperature range for travel kettles usually varies from 95°F to 212°F, so users can select the optimal temperature for their needs. Additionally, some travel kettles come with a feature that allows users to select pre-set temperatures for various beverages like tea, coffee, and hot chocolate.

Temperature control kettles are a great option for the modern traveler. They are convenient, efficient, and can make it easier to customize the temperature of the water to suit any need. With a temperature control kettle, users can enjoy a hot beverage without having to worry about the temperature being too hot or too cold.

  • Automatic Shut-Off Feature

When looking for the perfect travel kettle, one of the most important features to look for is an automatic shut-off feature. This feature is especially important when you’re traveling and may not be in the same room as the kettle while it’s boiling. An automatic shut-off feature will ensure your kettle turns itself off after it has finished boiling. This will help you save energy, prevent the kettle from boiling dry, and reduce the risk of any potential danger.

The best kind of an automatic shut-off feature will not only shut the kettle off after boiling, but it will also turn off the heating element once the water has reached the desired temperature. This will give you more control over the boiling process and help you achieve the perfect cup of tea or coffee. Many travel kettles also come with an LED indicator that will let you know when the water has reached the desired temperature.

It’s important to read the product specifications before investing in a travel kettle to make sure it has an automatic shut-off feature. If you’re looking for the best travel kettle, seek out one with an advanced automatic shut-off feature that will turn off the heating element to prevent any accidents.

Online retailers provide the convenience of shopping from the comfort of one’s own home, while department stores offer a variety of brands and styles in one place. Walk into any kitchen supply store and you’ll find an array of travel kettles to choose from. From electric to manual kettles, you’ll find them all. How to Choose the Right Travel Kettle

Selecting the right travel kettle can be an overwhelming process. To make sure you’re getting the best product for your needs, consider what size and features you need, compare prices between different brands, and read customer reviews to make an informed decision. With careful consideration, you can find the perfect travel kettle to meet your needs.

  • Consider Your Needs

When selecting the right travel kettle, it is essential to consider what features you need in order to best suit your requirements. For instance, if you are looking for a lightweight and compact kettle, there are options available with smaller capacities and ergonomic handles that make them easy to carry. Alternatively, if you are planning on camping or staying somewhere where there is limited access to electricity, you may want to opt for an electric kettle that is powered by a 12V car adapter. Additionally, if you want to quickly heat up your water, you should look for a fast-boiling kettle that can get the job done in a matter of minutes.

Consider also the capacity of the kettle. Smaller kettles are more suitable for individual use, while larger kettles are ideal for groups of two or more people. Additionally, if you want to make tea or coffee for multiple people, you should look for a kettle with a larger capacity and a spout or a heat-resistant handle to make pouring easier.

Finally, think about the materials used in the construction of the kettle. Stainless steel is a popular choice for durability and convenience, while plastic is a more budget-friendly option. Some kettles are also available with a silicone or rubber exterior for insulated comfort and an easier grip. Depending on your needs, you can decide which material is the best for you.

  • Compare Prices

Having identified where to buy a travel kettle, the next step is to determine which model is the best fit for your needs. Comparing prices can be a great place to start. Prices for travel kettles vary significantly, so it’s important to set a budget and shop around to find the best value.

Start by researching the different brands and models available. Compare prices to find the best deal and look for any additional features that may be included. Many models come with additional accessories such as temperature settings, boil-dry protection, and a range of colors. These features can add to the cost, so be sure to consider if they are worth it.

When comparing prices, it’s also worth looking at sales and discounts. Many retailers offer promotions throughout the year and may have discounts that could save you money. Additionally, some retailers offer free shipping or a price match guarantee, both of which could be useful if you’re looking for the best deal. Shopping around could result in a substantial saving, so it’s worth taking the time to research different retailers.

  • Read Reviews

Now that you’ve narrowed down the options of which travel kettle to buy, it’s time to read reviews to make sure you’re getting the best product for your needs. Reading reviews is one of the most important steps when it comes to shopping, since it gives you an idea of the product’s overall quality.

When reading reviews it’s important to sift through the information and look for the bigger picture. Look for patterns, if people are saying the same thing over and over, then it’s likely true. Don’t be swayed by a few negative reviews, look at the overall consensus of the product.

You can also use reviews to compare different travel kettles, seeing which ones are most recommended and why. This can help you decide which kettle is right for you, as you weigh the pros and cons of different models. Reading reviews gives you an insight into the quality of the product before you purchase it.

Care and Maintenance of Travel Kettles

To keep a travel kettle in top condition, regular cleaning should be carried out to remove any limescale or other debris. Additionally, the electric cord should be periodically inspected for any wear and tear, and replaced if necessary. Finally, the kettle should be stored in a cool, dry place when not in use.

  • Cleaning the Kettle

Now that you’ve chosen the perfect travel kettle for your needs, it’s important to give it the care and maintenance it needs to keep it in good condition for a long time. Cleaning the kettle on a regular basis is essential for keeping it free from bacteria and potential contaminants.

To clean your travel kettle, use a damp cloth with a mild detergent to wipe the exterior of the kettle and remove any dirt or residue. It is important to be gentle and not use too much force to avoid damaging the surface of the kettle. After cleaning the outside of the kettle, fill it up with a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water and let it sit for a few hours. This will help remove any hard water deposits or lingering smells. Once the mixture is done sitting, pour it out and wipe down the inside with a damp cloth.

To help keep your travel kettle in tip-top shape, it’s important to give it a deep cleaning every few months. Fill the kettle with a mixture of baking soda and warm water and let it sit for an hour. This will help loosen any dirt or residue that may have built up inside. Pour out the solution and rinse the kettle thoroughly. Once the kettle is clean, use a soft cloth to dry the interior and exterior. With regular cleaning and maintenance, your travel kettle will be sure to keep you hydrated and energized for many years to come.

  • Replacing the Electric Cord

Once the right travel kettle has been chosen, it is important to maintain it properly to ensure long-term use. Regularly checking for wear and tear on the electric cord is an important step. If the electric cord begins to fray, it is important to replace it as soon as possible.

Replacing the electric cord can be done easily. First, make sure to unplug the kettle and allow it to cool completely. Carefully remove the old cord and discard it. Then, select a replacement cord that is compatible with the kettle. The cord should be the same length and with the same voltage rating as the original.

Next, begin to carefully fasten the new cord to the kettle. Securely attach the cord to the terminals and insert the cord into the kettle. Finally, before the cord is plugged into the wall outlet, check all connections to ensure that everything is properly fastened. With a replacement cord in place, the kettle will be ready for use.

  • Storing the Kettle

Once you have chosen the perfect travel kettle and mastered the care and maintenance, it’s important to store it properly. This will help to keep it in pristine condition and ready for your next vacation.

When it comes to storing your travel kettle, the best place to keep it is in a dry, enclosed space. A closet or cabinet will work perfectly, as long as it is free from dust and moisture. Be sure to choose a space in your home where the air temperature is relatively consistent. This will ensure that your travel kettle does not become too hot or too cold.

It is also important to store the electric cord of the travel kettle separately from the appliance itself. This will prevent the cord from becoming tangled or damaged. Wrapping the cord around the kettle can also cause unnecessary wear and tear. When the kettle is not in use, store the cord in a designated storage space, such as a drawer or a box. This will keep it safe and secure until you need it again.

Storing your travel kettle in the proper environment with the electric cord kept separately will help to ensure that your kettle will be ready for your next journey. By taking the time to properly store the appliance, you will ensure that your travel kettle lasts for many years to come.

How to Use a Travel Kettle

Before using the travel kettle, it is important to ensure it is properly prepared for use. The kettle must be unscrewed and the internal filter removed and washed. Boiling water is then achieved by filling the kettle with cold water and ensuring the switch is in the ‘on’ position. After each use, the kettle must be emptied and wiped clean with a damp cloth to keep it in good working condition.

  • Preparing Your Kettle

Now that you’ve learned how to care for your travel kettle, it’s time to get it ready for use! Preparing your kettle is the first step in using a travel kettle, and it’s important to make sure that it is completely clean and free from any debris. Here are some tips to help you get your travel kettle ready for use.

First, it’s important to make sure your travel kettle is in good condition and free from any damage. Inspect the kettle for any signs of wear and tear, such as rust or cracks. Check the power cord to make sure it is in good condition and free from any fraying or other damage. If your kettle shows any signs of damage, it is best to replace it.

Next, it is important to make sure the inside of your travel kettle is clean and free from any debris. Start by filling the kettle with warm water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Close the lid and shake the kettle to allow the soap to get to all the crevices. Once done, discard the soapy water and rinse the kettle with clean water. Dry the kettle with a clean cloth, and it is now ready for use.

Finally, make sure you have all the necessary items needed to use your travel kettle. This includes the power cord, a measuring cup, and any additional accessories that may come with your particular model. Once you have all the items, you are now ready to use your travel kettle.

  • Boiling Water

Having prepared and cared for your travel kettle, it is now time to put your kettle to use! Boiling water in a travel kettle is a simple process that can be done in a few easy steps.

First, make sure the kettle is turned off and fill it with the desired amount of water. Take note of the maximum fill line, as filling the kettle beyond this point can lead to boiling water spilling over and causing damage. Once filled, it’s time to turn on the switch. Depending on the kettle model, the switch may be a toggle or a button. When the switch is turned on, the heating element will begin to heat the water, and a light may come on to indicate that the kettle is in use.

The boiling process will take a few minutes, so it is important to monitor the kettle and switch it off when the water has reached the boiling point. To check if the water is boiling, remove the kettle from its base and observe the water’s movement. If the water is bubbling, it is boiling and can be removed from the base. Make sure to exercise caution when handling a boiling kettle, as the hot water can cause serious injury if it splashes. Once the water is done boiling, simply switch off the kettle and allow the boiling water to cool off before pouring or using it.

  • Cleaning the Kettle After Use

Now that you have learned how to properly use and prepare your travel kettle, it is important to keep it clean after each use. To ensure your kettle is clean and functioning properly, there are a few steps that should be taken each time you use it.

Firstly, after boiling the water, it is important to rinse out the contents of the kettle. This will reduce the amount of residue that builds up in the kettle over time. Additionally, it is important to minimize the amount of water that stays in the kettle between uses. It is recommended to pour out any remaining water and to dry off the inside of the kettle with a clean cloth.

Another important step to cleaning your travel kettle is to clean the exterior. Dirt and dust can accumulate on the outside of the kettle, so it is important to wipe it down with a damp cloth. Additionally, it is important to use a mild soap and water solution to clean the outside and to dry it thoroughly after cleaning. This will help to preserve the finish of the kettle and make it look like new.

By following these simple steps after each use, you can ensure that your travel kettle stays clean and in top condition. This will allow you to enjoy a freshly boiled cup of your favorite beverage on the go for many years to come.

Safety Precautions When Using a Travel Kettle

When preparing to use a travel kettle, it’s important to take safety precautions. First, unplug the kettle from any outlet before handling it. It’s also important to never leave the kettle unattended, as it can be a safety hazard. Lastly, it’s important to never overfill the kettle, as it can cause the kettle to malfunction or even leak.

  • Unplug the Kettle

It is important to remember to unplug your travel kettle when not in use. One of the most important safety precautions you can take when using a travel kettle is to unplug it when it is not in use. This will help to prevent any possible electrical shock or fire hazard.

When unplugging your travel kettle, it is best to do so slowly and carefully. This will give you time to ensure that the cord is completely unplugged, as a loose cord can be a dangerous hazard. Additionally, if the outlet you are using is loose, it is best to avoid using it or to use a surge protector.

Another important factor to consider when unplugging your travel kettle is to make sure the handle is in a safe position. This will help to prevent any possible burns to your hands as you unplug the cord. Additionally, when unplugging, make sure the kettle is away from any appliances or furniture that can be damaged by the hot water. Taking these few extra moments can ensure that your kettle is unplugged safely and securely.

  • Don’t Leave the Kettle Unattended

Now that you know how to use your travel kettle, it’s important to remember a few safety precautions when handling it. One of the most important rules is to never leave your kettle unattended while it is plugged in. Doing so could potentially cause a fire.

When using your travel kettle, it is important to pay attention to the water level. If it gets too high and starts to boil over, it could cause a short circuit. Additionally, if the kettle is left plugged in and the water runs out, the heating element could be damaged or the kettle could overheat.

It is important to keep an eye on the kettle at all times. Make sure the kettle is unplugged if it is not being used. If you need to leave the area, make sure the kettle is unplugged before you go. This will help to prevent any accidents from occurring.

  • Don’t Overfill the Kettle

It is important to always pay attention to the amount of water being poured into the travel kettle. Even when the water level appears to be below the maximum fill line, it is essential that you do not fill the kettle to the brim. An overfilled kettle can create a hazardous situation.

The boiling water is under pressure and can cause the kettle to overflow when the lid is opened. This can lead to hot water being sprayed onto yourself and other people in the area. Additionally, the heat of the boiling water can create a steam pressure build-up within the kettle. Without proper ventilation, the lid can shoot off the kettle in an explosive manner, sending boiling water flying in all directions.

To prevent such a hazardous situation, it is important to always leave a few inches of space between the water level and the maximum fill line. This will allow the boiling water to expand without becoming too pressurized. Additionally, be sure to always use a kettle that has a lid that fits securely and is not cracked or broken in any way. Doing so will help ensure that the lid stays in place even when the kettle is boiling.

Travel kettles are an ideal companion for frequent travelers and those always on the go. A quality travel kettle can make all the difference in providing a hot cup of coffee, tea, or soup while on the road. With the right features, a travel kettle can make traveling more enjoyable and convenient. Whether it’s electric or battery-operated, make sure to purchase a travel kettle that is appropriate for your needs and budget. With proper care and maintenance, your travel kettle can last for years to come.

Best Electric Kettle for Travel to Buy This Year: Buyer’s Guide

As an avid tea or coffee drinker, an electric travel kettle can save you time, money, and hassle on the road.

A hot beverage can also soothe the stress of booking return flights during your trip abroad.

However, not all electric travel kettles are the same.

Use these factors to choose the ideal electric travel kettle for your needs.

Capacity refers to how much water the kettle can hold and boil at once, determining the number of cups of tea or coffee you can make in a single boil.

The ideal capacity will depend on your situation – whether you travel solo or as a group.

Weight and Size

electric kettle for travel

Weight and size are also essential considerations when buying an electric travel kettle, especially if you have limited space or luggage allowance. You want a kettle that is easy to store and carry.

Some electric travel kettles have a foldable or collapsible design that reduces their size by up to 50%.

These kettles are ideal for backpackers, hikers, or campers who need to save space and weight in their bags.

The wattage determines how fast the kettle can boil water. Wattage also affects voltage, which may impact your ability to use the kettle when traveling.

For instance, most European countries use 220V outlets, while we use 110V in the States.

If you don’t want to use a converter or adapter, choose an electric travel kettle that has a dual voltage switch so you can change the voltage according to the country you are in.

Additional Features

Some electric travel kettles have extra features that make them more versatile and easier to use.

These include:

  • Auto Shut-Off Feature . This feature automatically switches off the kettle when the water reaches a boiling point, or there is no water.
  • Temperature Control Function: It lets you set the desired temperature for your water, depending on the type of drink or food you want to make.
  • Keep Warm Function : This maintains the selected temperature for a certain period, usually between 20 minutes and 2 hours.
  • LED indicator : It shows the status of the kettle, such as whether it is on, off, boiling, or ready.
  • Removable Filter: This traps impurities or scale in the water and can be removed for cleaning.

The Perfect Travel Pals for Your Next Adventure

An electric travel kettle can be a lifesaver for travelers who love hot beverages or instant meals. Use this guide to find the best electric kettle for travel. All these travel kettles are easy to pack and use in a hotel, hostel, campsite, or the car.

History of Tetsubin — Japanese Cast Iron Teapot

Tetsubin is a traditional Japanese tea kettle featuring a spout, lid, and arching handle. Made exclusively of cast iron, their origin isn’t entirely clear, but researchers suggest they were developed from primitive, sixteenth-century water-bearing pots.

tetsubin tea kettle

Popularized by China’s introduction of coarse loose leaf — a departure from the powdered matcha favored in Japan — Tetsubin were designed to brew tea and water on a brazier, or hibachi, over coals.

In the 19th century, modern stoves made them more collectible than practical, and styles evolved from simple and unadorned to artistic masterpieces. Today, they bring a touch of tradition back to our busy lives.

Advantages of Japanese Cast Iron Teapots

Space-age materials make great mattresses, but here’s why cast iron makes a better teapot:

Virtually Indestructible: Cast iron is the quintessential forever cookware. It’s heavy but so durable it survived cross-country travel with the pioneers. There are vintage pieces on the market today that look like new. Porcelain and glass teapots are lucky to survive years, much less decades. Extreme overheating can cause warping and pouring ice-cold water over hot, dry iron can cause cracks. But if you treat your kettle gently and keep it clean and dry between uses to ward off rust, it will serve you — and perhaps the next generation — for a lifetime.

Heats Evenly and Retains Warmth: Cast iron heats evenly, extracting more nutrients and subtle flavors from your favorite loose leaf tea. Heat retention is superb, so your second cup will be as warm and comforting as your first.

Chemical-Free: Health experts agree — pure cast iron is one of the world’s safest cooking materials. It’s an alloy containing iron and carbon plus traces of healthy, naturally occurring substances like sulfur, manganese and phosphorus. Unlike “advanced” cookware, it contains no unpronounceable additives or chemicals known to cause cancer. If you want your tea to be as safe, wholesome and nutritious as possible, a cast iron kettle is among your best options.

Welcomed Source of Dietary Iron: Iron is a dietary mineral that supports oxygenation — your body needs it to survive. Yet low iron remains the world’s most common nutritional deficiency. Cooking food in a cast iron pan can double or even triple its iron content — a bonus for vegetarians who frequently suffer from iron deficiency anemia. Brewing tea in a non-coated cast iron kettle has similar benefits.

Offers a Traditional Tea Experience: Traditional Japanese tea ceremonies are symbolic of peace and harmony. They’re a bonding opportunity and a way for friends to take a break from their worries. So whether you’re hosting a simple afternoon tea or preparing for a spiritual tea ceremony, you can honor the tradition with a Japanese cast iron kettle. Made from authentic materials in time-honored designs, they invoke the spirit of friendship through relaxation.

Best Japanese Cast Iron Teapots Reviewed

After thorough research and testing, we chose 8 of our favorite cast iron teapots and sets to be reviewed here.

If you prefer a teapot not made in China , check out our overall winner ITCHU-DO HAKEME, and the third option (Iwachu Teapot) in this guide.

While the ITCHU-DO and Iwachu teapots are made in Japan, most other products in this guide are manufactured in China. Although our pick for the best value for money, the Suyika tetsubin, is finished in Japan to ensure high quality.

Browse through the different options below and choose according to your budget and style preference. We have included both traditional black hobnail designs as well as more colorful options.

Best Overall: ITCHU-DO HAKEME Japanese Cast Iron Tea Kettle

This traditional teapot is made by ITCHU-DO, one of the most famous cast iron brands in Japan known for its high-quality and durable products. Both stylish and functional, it’s great for brewing tea but has also become a popular decorative item in many households.

The ITCHU-DO HAKEME is a real old-school tetsubin made of pure cast iron without enamel — this means you can use it on a stovetop and you will also enjoy the benefits of iron that is absorbed in the water.

ITCHU-DO HAKEME Japanese Cast Iron tea Kettle Nambu Tetsubin

Specifications:

  • Volume: 1100ml / 37 oz (also available in other sizes)
  • Stovetop Safe: Yes
  • Made in: Japan
  • Infuser Included: No

Originating in the Nambu region of Japan during the 17th century these kettles were originally used to boil water for tea ceremonies. A high-quality example of traditional Japanese craft, the kettle is very durable and is designed to last for years. With proper care, it can be passed down from generation to generation.

What we really like about this teapot is the quality of the material and craftsmanship. It’s made with thick cast iron, which is an excellent conductor of heat, the ITCHU-DO HAKEME distributes heat evenly throughout the teapot for a perfect brew. It also retains heat very well, which makes it ideal for serving hot tea to guests.

The handle of the kettle can be folded down for easy storage, and the spout is designed to pour tea smoothly without dripping.

The kettle is suitable for use on a gas stove or an electric stove, which makes it versatile and convenient to use. You can even use it on a direct fire, but it is recommended to have a protective trivet to prevent damage to the teapot.

You can get this kettle in many different sizes and colors to suit your personal preference. Click here to see the full ITCHU-DO selection available on Amazon.

This tea kettle is equipped with a removable stainless steel infuser, it’s stovetop-safe and ready to brew for four plus guests — the 1.8 liter size makes about 6 cups.

Suyika Japanese Tetsubin Cast Iron Teapot

You can choose a teapot with no coating (Anzawa-Do) or one that has an interior fully glazed with heavy-duty, rust-resistant enamel for easy cleaning. Glazing also prevents iron from absorbing unwanted flavors and odors so today’s mild oolong won’t taste like yesterday’s spicy chai.

Suyika is so confident you’ll be pleased with their tetsubin teapot that they guarantee your satisfaction — if you don’t love it, send it back. You won’t get a better kettle for your money.

  • Excellent overall quality
  • Stylish traditional design
  • Great value for money
  • Comes with a stainless steel infuser
  • Available in several different sizes and designs
  • Not manufactured in Japan

Elegant Authentic Japanese Tetsubin Kettle: Iwachu Teapot with Gold and Purple Goldfish

Enjoy tea for two with this delightful cast iron teapot. Manufactured by Iwachu, a Japanese company with a century of experience in crafting cast iron cookware, you’ll be thrilled with its sturdy build and refined finish — the quality is obvious.

Iwachu Japanese Iron Teapot

  • Volume: 650ml / 22oz
  • Stovetop Safe: No

With a 22-ounce capacity, it brews 4 small cups — perfect for afternoon tea with a friend. It’s well-balanced with a clean pour and comes with a fine mesh, stainless steel infuser for your convenience. The enameled interior is brew-safe only, but it’s a breeze to clean. Rinse and dry it between uses to keep it sparkling.

If you admire authentic Japanese art, you’ll appreciate this kettle’s traditional goldfish design symbolizing good fortune — it’s an Iwachu original. Pair it with cups in shades of black, purple or gold to create a stunning set. The finish is durable but not scratch-proof and the handle isn’t wrapped, so use it with care.

At nearly twice the price of the Suyika tetsubin reviewed above, this teapot may seem like a lesser value, but the aesthetics are worth the price. It’s a petite kettle with bold styling that packs an artistic punch.

A quality cast-iron teapot doesn’t have to break the bank. Take a quiet five this afternoon with a friend and Juvale’s kettle set for two.

Juvale Black Cast Iron Tea Kettle Set

  • Volume: 1200ml / 40oz

The set comes complete with a 1.2-liter enameled kettle, two 3.4-ounce cups, and a matching trivet in a black hobnail design — the clean lines and monochromatic finish blend into any décor. A complimentary stainless steel infuser basket holds your favorite loose leaf or bags.

The Juvale is enameled and rust-resistant but not stovetop-safe, so use it only for brewing. But if you want a simple serving kettle that transforms every cup of tea into a special occasion, this is the little kettle that can.

  • Includes 2 cups and a trivet
  • Appealing traditional design
  • Well-made and durable
  • Should not be heated on a stovetop

Affordable Pure Cast Iron Option: Hwagui Japanese Cast Iron Teapot

This well-appointed teapot from Hwagui is a close competitor for best value tetsubin. Similar in style to the Suyika kettle with a black hobnail finish and hemp-wrapped handle, it’s not enameled and thus, stovetop-safe.

Available in sizes from 23 to 41 ounces, it serves from two to four — each comes with a reusable fine mesh infuser.

Hwagui Cast Iron Teapot

  • Volume: 800ml / 27oz (other sizes also available)

There are three minor differences between this kettle and the Suyika, our pick for the best value for money. The lid on the Suyika is recessed — the Hwagui has a small raised edge. Functionally, both lids stay put when you pour, so the design is a matter of preference.

The Suyika’s handle also has a more pronounced curve that makes the pot feel better balanced, but it’s not a deal-breaker. The real contrast is the price — you’ll pay a third less for the comparable Hwagui. If you’re on a budget, it’s the bargain you’ve been waiting for.

  • Excellent value for money
  • Great overall quality
  • Stylish and durable
  • Safe to use on any stovetop
  • No enamel coating means that it’s harder to clean properly

Add a splash of color to your kitchen with Toptier’s cast iron kettle. Highly decorative and practical, it comes in a rainbow of vibrant colors to brighten tea time.

Cast Iron Teapot Buyer’s Guide

A cast-iron tea kettle is an investment. Consider these key points before you buy.

1. Material Quality

Like most materials, cast iron comes in different grades with matching prices. The difference is less in the material than in how it’s forged.

Kettles made in Japan are of the highest caliber, subjected to precision standards and strict quality control measures that result in a smoother, more refined finish. The downside is you’ll pay a premium of 30 percent or more.

Kettles from China are created for the mass market, and so the emphasis is on keeping the price down by taking shortcuts. Products are completely safe and fully functional but the finish is less polished.

The kettle is for both brewing tea and making an attractive addition to your kitchen. Only you can decide where quality and your budget meet.

2. Tetsubin or Tetsu Kyusu?

All Tetsubin are made of cast iron, but not all cast-iron kettles are Tetsubin. Modern versions with a glazed enameled finish are called Tetsu Kyusu.

Tetsu Kyusus are rust-resistant and simpler to clean because they’re enameled, but most should be used only for brewing and not to heat water because high temperatures can crack the finish. Select models are cooktop-safe.

Tetsubin are more versatile and can be used to boil water. The interior finish is rough, but tannins in tea react with the bare cast iron to form a nonstick coating over time that repels rust and adds a subtle dimension of flavor.

Both are fine products as long as you know what you’re getting, but enameled kettles are more popular for their convenience and price — conventional, unglazed tetsubin are crafted of premium cast iron and cost significantly more. Today, Tetsu Kyusu are so ubiquitous they’re referred to as tetsubin because they’re similar in style.

3. Capacity

Cast iron kettles come in sizes from 0.5 to 1.5 liters or more. Choosing the right size is straightforward. First, consider that the tetsubin should only be filled about 70% full when brewing tea. Then multiply the capacity of your cups by the maximum number of people you serve at one time and add a few ounces to cover evaporation loss.

If you’re between sizes, go for the larger size — cast iron retains heat well, and the extra capacity is nice for a quick warm-up.

If you’re shopping for a Japanese cast iron kettle, chances are you appreciate Asian tea culture and want to incorporate its design elements into your home. Choose a black hobnail kettle for a modern kitchen or consider a brightly colored teapot with a floral relief pattern for a rustic look.

Tetsubin and Tetsu Kyusu both come in a wide range of styles from traditional to eclectic with lines and colors that fit any décor.

5. Do You Need Just a Pot or a Set?

A cast iron pot can pour tea into any cup. But the oversized coffee mugs most of us have on our shelves are too large for tea.

Experts say 3–5-ounce cups are ideal for coaxing maximum flavor from your brew. If you don’t have the right size, consider buying a full cast iron tea set. Most come with 2–4 matching iron or porcelain teacups .

4 Important Tips for Using and Maintaining Your Cast Iron Teapot

Here are a few important things to remember when using your tetsubin:

First Use: The first time you use the teapot put about 5 grams of tea into the infuser and pour boiling water to fill the pot about 70% full. Let it steep for 10 minutes and then discard the tea. This will remove any cast iron odor and creates a protective layer to prevent the kettle from rusting.

Maintenance: Don’t use any detergent or sponge to clean your teapot. Just remember to empty it after each use and don’t leave moisture inside. Pour any liquid out and remove the lid so the kettle will dry. If you want, you can wipe it both inside and outside with a soft cloth.

Don’t Heat When Empty: Don’t heat an empty cast iron kettle as it might get damaged. Also, don’t put cold water into a hot teapot. Either add a bit of hot water first before putting cold water in or pre-warm the water before pouring it into a hot kettle.

No Microwave or Dishwasher: Tetsubin is the type of teapot you should never put in a microwave or dishwasher.

Japanese Cast Iron Teapot FAQ

Can i heat my cast iron teapot on a stove.

Some cast iron teapots are safe to be heated on a stovetop. Yet, tetsubin are mostly used for brewing tea, not for heating water.

Check the instructions that come with the product to find out if your kettle can be heated on a stove. If you do heat it on a stovetop, use a low temperature setting to avoid damaging the teapot. Also, never heat an empty tetsubin.

Can I use my Japanese cast iron kettle to brew coffee?

We recommend using your tetsubin only for making tea. Using it to brew other beverages such as coffee might leave unpleasant flavors in the pot.

Will a cast iron teapot rust over time?

When you have a high-quality Japanese cast iron teapot, it does not rust easily when maintained well. Don’t leave liquids in the teapot for longer periods of time and let the tetsubin dry properly after each use.

However, over time it is inevitable that some rust will accumulate on the teapot. You can safely remove it by boiling oolong tea or green tea leaves in water and leaving it in the pot for a while. You can also take a soft cloth, wet it with the green tea, and then gently wipe both the interior and exterior of the kettle.

Tea Kettles Made in USA Not in China

6 thoughts on “8 Best Japanese Cast Iron Teapots in 2024 (Tested & Reviewed)”

Iron tea kettle without enamel inside is the most traditional and should not be overly cleaned inside as the rust is believed to enhance taste.

Yes, I agree. Best to just rinse it clean with hot water.

FYI, TOWA workshop tea pots are all made in China then finished processed in Japan. I would not trust China cast iron as they have a very long history of using contaminated iron with heavy metals.

Thanks for this information. I updated the article.

Best Regards, Joonas

Joonas, The first picture in the actual article, just under “History of Tetsubin – Japanese Cast Iron Teapot” with two green teacups, is a tetsubin with an orbit design. I would like to purchase one just like the one in that picture. Can you tell me who the manufacturer is and where I can get one exactly in that design. I have been wanting one with an orbit design, which I feel is much more soothing and delightful to look at than those with the traditional hobnail design. Any help you can give me in purchasing one of that same design in the picture would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, I was not able to find anything exactly like that on Amazon or other online stores. I think that the closest one available is this ITCHU-DO HAKEME teapot .

The Our Place Classic Stacking Set was a favorite with our consumer panel and had the highest score in attractiveness of all the sets we tested. In particular, people commented on how much they loved the style and how the off-white color contrasted with the tan rims. If this colorway isn't for you, the set is also available in char, spice and terracotta.

Aside from its good looks, the dinnerware set aced our Lab tests. It resisted cuts from steak knives and stains from marina sauce, plus it also still looked as good as new after 14 cycles in the dishwasher. Our pros appreciate how this dinnerware set stacks neatly and looks organized if you want to display them on open shelving in your kitchen. However, due to the straight-rimmed sides, the plates stack higher than the typical plates.

The Classic Stacking Set comes with 20 pieces, but if you need more, there's also the Complete Stacking Set which has 36 pieces.

What's included: 4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 4 dinner bowls, 4 dessert plates, 4 soup bowls | Material: Ceramic stoneware | Number of settings: 4 | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Microwave safe: Yes

Gibson Home Zen Buffet 30-Piece Dinnerware Set

 Zen Buffet 30-Piece Dinnerware Set

Gibson’s simple white porcelain set impressed us with its quality and style. In our tests, it resisted scratches and stains. It wasn't too hot to touch after microwaving the plate for two minutes and stood up to multiple washes in the dishwasher. Not only is this set durable, but it comes with 30 pieces for under $70.

You'll get mugs, dinner plates, dessert plates, standard bowls as well as salad bowls that can be used in the microwave and cleaned in the dishwasher. Even though the salad bowls are on the smaller side with 4.5-inch diameter, we loved the versatility of the set overall.

What's included: 6 dinner plates, 6 dessert plates, 6 standard bowls, 6 salad bowls, 6 mugs | Material: Porcelain | Number of settings: 6 | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Microwave safe: Yes

Corelle Vitrelle 18-Piece Dinnerware Set

Vitrelle 18-Piece Dinnerware Set

You'll want to reach for this set for just about any meal — it's chip-resistant and both microwave- and dishwasher-safe at an amazing price . "The Corelle brand has earned a reputation for dinnerware that is resistant to breaking, chipping, scratching and staining," said Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab Director

Nicole Papantoniou Corelle consistently tests well and it can even be used for outdoor tableware.

While its ultra-lightweight frame certainly doesn't feel sturdy, it's just as durable as a heavier, thicker porcelain piece. Though it may feel too thin for some people's preference. We highly recommend this set for families who want durable dinnerware but would prefer not to use plastic. It's also available in a variety of patterns.

What's included: 6 dinner plates, 6 salad plates, 6 bowls | Material: Vitrelle (laminated glass) | Number of settings: 6 | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Microwave safe: Yes

Williams Sonoma Apilco Tradition Blue-Banded Porcelain Dinnerware Sets

Apilco Tradition Blue-Banded Porcelain Dinnerware Sets

Classic blue bands elevate basic white dishes that are perfect for daily use. The wide rims allow you to grab the plate without getting food on your hand. The porcelain proved durable in our tests, withstanding 14 wash cycles and steak knife cuts without showing any signs of wear. Marinara sauce was left on the plate overnight and washed off cleanly, leaving no stains behind.

Our only complaint was that after heating the plate for two minutes, it was pretty hot to touch. We didn’t need a mitt to grab it, but we suspect heating over two minutes may require one. However, the plate cooled off quickly. Choose from 5-, 16- and 20-piece sets. The 5- and 20-piece dinnerware sets come with soup bowls and the 16-piece set comes with cereal bowls.

What's included: 1 dinner plate, 1 salad plate, 1 soup bowl, 1 cup, 1 saucer (5-piece set) | Material: Porcelain | Number of settings: 1, 4 or 5 depending on number of pieces chosen in a set | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Microwave safe: Yes

Fable Base Dinnerware Set

Base Dinnerware Set

Prefer a minimalist aesthetic? This earthy yet modern pick works equally well for a casual or a more elevated table. The set is made from stoneware, which is an extra-dense material and one of the most durable types of ceramic so you won’t have to treat them too delicately.

In our tests, the dishes showed no signs of scratching after cutting with steak knives and marinara sauce washed cleanly off the plate after sitting overnight. After two minutes in the microwave, the plate was cool enough to touch and take out with our bare hands.

While on the pricey side, the dinnerware has a smooth, matte feel and is available in six muted colors and one speckled pattern. Our pros appreciated that the bottom of the dinnerware isn’t glazed and has a rough texture, making it easier to hold and won't feel as if it's going to slip out of your hand.

What's included: 4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 4 large pasta bowls, 4 small breakfast bowls | Material: Stoneware | Number of settings: 4 | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Microwave safe: Yes

Fortessa Los Cabos Dinnerware Set

Los Cabos Dinnerware Set

Colored glass plates have been trending and they're a great way to add instant personality to your kitchen. "I’ve been using [this set] for a while now and have gotten so many compliments. It’s really durable and I’m not worried about things breaking in the sink or dishwasher ," said Papantoniou.

Testers loved the shapes of all the pieces and noted that they weren't too heavy. In our tests, these plates did not scratch or hold on to stains. The plates were hot to the touch right after microwaving but cooled quickly.

Whether you choose clear or a color like blue or pink, a nice surprise is how the glass allows a tablecloth to show through. Though one tester noted there's some variation in the shade of the clear plates.

What's included: 4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 4 cereal bowls, 4 pasta bowls | Material: Glass | Number of settings: 4 | Dishwasher safe: Yes| Microwave safe: Yes

Lenox Blue Bay 12-Piece Dinnerware Set

Blue Bay 12-Piece Dinnerware Set

This Lenox dinnerware set stands out with its organic, wavy shape and gold rims. Our consumer panel was split on whether they liked the way these looked, so this set may not be for everyone. But those who liked the design gave it top scores.

Our experts were impressed that even after 14 cycles in the dishwasher, none of the gold rims showed any signs of wear. Surprisingly, even with the gold trim, the set is microwave-safe. After two minutes in the microwave, the plate wasn’t too hot to pick up. The plates stood up to steak knives and didn’t show any scratches after cutting on them. We also liked that it felt very smooth when cutting on these plates. Marinara didn’t stand a chance either and washed off without a trace of sauce after sitting on the plate overnight.

What's included: 4 dinner plates, 4 dessert plates, 4 bowls | Material: Porcelain | Number of settings: 4 | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Microwave safe: Yes

Fortessa Modern Coupe Dinnerware Set

Modern Coupe Dinnerware Set

White is one of the most — if not the most — popular colors for plates. The only problem is that some white dishes can look bland or too casual, which is why we love this set from Fortessa. The design is simple, yet has an elegant feel, thanks to its shiny finish and slightly sloped rims. It’s not surprising they were among the high scorers for aesthetics.

We also appreciate that they stack neatly and compactly. Though the bowls are very large, so they may not be suited for certain foods.

The plates were cool enough to remove out of the microwave after heating and the marinara sauce left overnight on the plates didn’t leave a stain. When cut with two types of steak knives, the plates didn’t show any signs of scratching. After 14 cycles in the dishwasher, they showed no signs of wear.

What's included: 4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 4 pasta bowls, 4 mugs | Material: Fortaluxe vitrified china | Number of settings: 4 | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Microwave safe: Yes

Wedgwood Gio 16-Piece Dinnerware Set

Gio 16-Piece Dinnerware Set

Wedgwood has a long history as a producer of quality dishware: The company has been making ceramics for over 260 years. We like the unique and subtle textural design of this pick.

Made of bone china, the set is expensive, but the dishes are light, thin and neatly stackable. Although they look delicate, they are durable enough to withstand the rigor of daily use — you don't have to set them aside to use only for special occasions. This dinnerware set had top scores for staining, scratching, microwaving and dishwashing.

Our pros love that this set is part of a collection that includes cups, bowls, plates and serving pieces that are sold separately — perfect if you accidentally break a piece or simply want to add on. One drawback our experts noticed while testing is that the 11.1-inch dinner plate is larger than most and may not fill well in smaller dishwashers.

What's included: 4 dinner plates, 4 salad plates, 4 bowls, 4 mugs | Material: Bone china | Number of settings: 4 | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Microwave safe: Yes

Fiesta 12-Piece Bistro Dinnerware Set

12-Piece Bistro Dinnerware Set

The highly popular Fiesta brand is known for its brightly colored dinnerware. This set is made of porcelain (also referred to as china), which is a more affordable option than bone china with similar durability and weight. The pieces are dishwasher-, microwave- and oven-safe up to 350°F.

Detailed with a fun concentric pattern around the rim, the dishes are available in a range of 13 colors. While the saturated colors may not complement food as well as white or more muted plates, they will definitely make a personality statement on your table. If you prefer setting your table with multiple colors instead of just sticking to one, or if you want to expand your collection or decorate for the holidays, the brand also offers three-piece sets in a variety of colors.

Our experts found the dishes to be sturdy and thick, and the brand claims the dishes are chip-resistant. In fact, Fiesta provides a five-year chip-replacement warranty .

How we test the dinnerware sets

linebreak

When testing dinnerware sets in the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab, we thoroughly researched the available dinnerware on the market. Our pros in the Lab visit numerous trade shows per year and connect with brands to learn about the latest and greatest in tableware. We narrowed down the options to test based on our categorical expertise.

When we test dinnerware, our experts look at ease-of-use factors, such as the helpfulness of any included instructions or manual and if the dinnerware is microwave and dishwasher safe.

stain testing dinner plates with chicken parmesan, spaghetti and tomato sauce

When we evaluate performance, we place a piece of chicken parmesan, as well as spaghetti and tomato sauce on each plate. We microwave that for two minutes. Immediately after microwaving, we note how hot each plate feels and if it's too hot to touch right away.

cutting up chicken parmesan and spaghetti on dinnerware

We test scratch resistance by cutting the chicken parmesan and spaghetti on each plate with two types of steak knives, a serrated and a flat edge. After scraping the food off and washing the plates, we score each based on the amount of scratching.

cut up chicken parmesan and spaghettin on plates

To test staining, we use the plates of food from our scratch test. We scrape off the plates leaving sauce and small bits behind to sit overnight. After sitting for at least 12 hours, we wash each plate in the dishwasher and check for any stains left behind. We then run each plate through the dishwasher 13 more times and check for any wear that may have occurred through the cycles.

consumer panel rating dinnerware aesthetics

Finally, we have a consumer test panel rate the attractiveness of the dinnerware. We also consider specs like materials, price, style and what's included in a set. We note the number of place settings or if pieces are sold individually so you can create your own set or replace broken items.

In general, we like versatile sets that include at least a large dinner plate, a small salad plate and a bowl that can be used for soups, cereal or pastas.

What to look for when shopping for the best dinnerware sets

double line

✔️ Number of settings: If you live alone or with just one person, a four to six-serve dinnerware set might make sense so you can have extras for visitors. Or, look for single sets or open-stock dinnerware so you can mix and match exactly what you want. Larger households should consider six- or eight-serve sets in case something breaks or chips, or sets that offer replacements for damaged pieces.

✔️ Type of dishes included: The most comprehensive dinnerware sets include two types of plates, two types of bowls and a mug. If you just need to expand your collection, opt for sets that include fewer pieces — and just the ones you need.

✔️ Dish shape: The plate's shape can affect its functionality, such as how it stacks and how easy it is to carry.

  • Plates with wide, flat rims provide a large space to grab, making it easy to carry but the tradeoff is that there's less space on the plate for food.
  • Dishes with straight-walled rims provide ample space to maneuver and cut food. These also stack very neatly in a single column so they look organized on an open shelf. On the other hand, these types of plates tend to stack taller so you may not be able to stack multiple items like plates and bowls on top of each other in a shorter cabinet. We also noticed that dishes with higher rims were a tighter squeeze in the prongs of the dishwasher and sometimes the rims got in the way with other dishes that weren't shaped the same.
  • Sloped rim dinnerware stacks neatly and compactly making it easy to store. The sloped sides are also a good medium between wide flat rims and straight-walled rims since they can provide a place to grab the plate or place more food.
  • Low bowls or "blates" are a cross between a bowl and a plate. They have a wide shallow bottom with raised sides that are typically taller than a plate but shorter than a deep bowl. These are versatile enough so they can be used as a plate or bowl. Many of our staff members commented how they love low bowls and use them over their other dinnerware because they're so versatile, especially for meals where everything is together in one bowl like a poke or Buddha bowl.

✔️ Dish size: Another thing to keep in mind, small plates are easy to carry and store in tight spaces but hold less food. Large plates are great for loading up a plate but may not fit well in smaller dishwashers.

✔️ Care instructions: Be sure to read the fine print — not all dinnerware sets are microwave- and dishwasher-safe. Some may include metallic banding that can't go in the microwave, while others can be made out of a delicate material that can chip in the dishwasher.

✔️ Durability: If you're cooking for kids or plan to take your dinnerware outside, you may want to consider lightweight, durable materials such as laminated glass or melamine. If you'd prefer a set that can be used both daily (with caution) and for more formal occasions, opt for bone china, porcelain or stoneware.

What's the best dinnerware material?

doubleline

✔️ Bone china is formed when bone ash is added to porcelain. It creates a delicate, slightly translucent and perfectly constructed material that usually has a milky white, luminous glaze, making it a great choice for refined formal dinnerware. Bone china is lightweight and thin, but it is considered the most durable ceramic dinnerware. It is also the most expensive material. Not all bone china is dishwasher- and microwave-safe, so check the care instructions before you buy.

✔️ Porcelain , also referred to as china, is the most ubiquitous ceramic dinnerware. It is less expensive than bone china, and with the right balance of price, durability and weight, it's great for both daily use and formal dinner parties. It has a glazed, nonporous surface that makes it dishwasher-safe, microwavable and sometimes oven-safe.

✔️ Stoneware is a type of ceramic that's popular for its rustic, earthy aesthetic. It is often speckled off-white or ivory (rather than pure or bright white), but it also comes in muted colors. Stoneware is heavy, thick and durable. The more unique or handmade pieces may not stack uniformly for storage.

✔️ Laminated glass (also called Vitrelle) is an incredibly durable material proprietary to the Corelle brand. In our tests, we found it is resistant to breaking, chipping, scratching and staining. If dropped on a hard surface, it will shatter, but it's still a versatile choice for indoor and outdoor dining.

What kind of dinnerware is most durable?

linebreak

If you're looking for a long-lasting set that can stand up to the wear and tear of daily breakfasts, lunches and dinners, there are certain materials that tend to fare better than others: " Stoneware is known to be durable, but it can be heavy and is prone to chipping ," said Papantoniou. "Laminated glass (the material Corelle uses) is quite durable and will last a long time — it also performed well in our scratch tests."

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
