Lennox Head, NSW
Superb surfing beach and chic small town on the far north coast between Ballina and Byron Bay.
It was inevitable, given the lifestyle magnetism of Byron Bay, that the villages along the far North Coast of New South Wales, will aspire to the Byron Bay buzz. In recent times Lennox Head has evolved from a sleepy holiday destination into a chic, rather gentrified, holiday resort town known for its excellent restaurants and its modern accommodation on the beachfront. It remains a charming, small townships with a large and beautiful headland (hence the name) to the south and a long, 'seven mile' beach which, in the words of the surfing community, is a place where 'the magical right-hand break' occurs. To discriminating surfers it is the 'Surf Capital of the Far North Coast'.
Lennox Head is located 754 km north of Sydney via the Pacific Highway and 184 km south of Brisbane. It is 20 km south of Byron Bay and 12 km north of Ballina.
Origin of Name
The first explorer into the area was Captain Henry Rous who seemed to be keen to name everything he saw after Charles Lennox, the Duke of Richmond. After naming the Richmond River at Ballina after the Duke he then named Lennox Head, again after the Duke.
Things to See and Do
Cape Byron Marine Park The Cape Byron Marine Park extends from Brunswick Heads in the north to Lennox Head in the south and includes coastal near-shore waters as well as tidal waters of estuaries and creeks in the area.
Pat Morton Lookout The Pat Morton Lookout on the headland at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach offers excellent views north across the township and Seven Mile Beach and south to Rocky Point, Boulder Beach and Skenners Head. There is a pleasant walking track with easy boardwalks which runs from town, along the oceanfront reserve and climbs the headland. Below the headland is 'The Point', a magnet for discriminating surfers. It is also common to see dolphins, and whales from May to October, from the headland. The headland is a result of lava flows and is part of the huge volcano which was over 80 km across and stretched from the Gold Coast down to Ballina and beyond. It was centred on Mount Warning near Murwillumbah.
Seven Mile Beach and Lennox Point Seven Mile Beach at Lennox Head (patrolled in the summer months) is justifiably famous for its right hand break at Lennox Point. The excellent Australia's Surfing Coast website notes: "The Lennox Head point break is beautiful to look at but powerful, and to ride it you need to find space among dozens of red-hot local surfers, so it’s not the place for beginners. It breaks onto sand, but there are some round smooth rocks to be scrambled over. Meanwhile, the “Magic Miles” between Lennox Head and Ballina offers a mixture of beach breaks and reefs that work on a variety of wind and swell directions. The only time there aren’t any waves on the Magic Miles is when there’s no swell at all. Lennox Head was declared a National Surfing Reserve in February 2007, the third site in Australia to be recognised for its significance to recreational surfing. The largest National Surfing Reserve in Australia, it runs 7.2km from the Surf Club south to Flat Rock." For more details check out http://www.surfthecoast.com.au/LennoxHead .
Other Attractions in the Area
Lake Ainsworth Located at the northern end of Pacific Parade is Lake Ainsworth, a freshwater lake with a distinctive brown, tannin colour produced by tea trees which line the shore. With a large picnic area at the southern end it offers a calm freshwater retreat for families. It is ideal for sailing, swimming and picnics. The lake's brown colour is not a result of dirtiness but of the staining which occurs as a result of the tea trees which are common along the shoreline.
The Coastal Walk There is a glorious 3.5 hour walk from the Pat Morton Lookout at Lennox Head to Ballina past rocky headlands and beautiful beaches.
* Prior to the arrival of Europeans the Bundjalung First Nations people had lived in the area for thousands of years (the middens on the coast are at least 2000 years old) and it was estimated there were at least 500 living in the area at the time of European settlement. They hunted the pademelons, wallabies, bandicoots and flying foxes in the hinterland. It is known that Seven Mile Beach was a common setting for tribal warfare between local Aborigines and those from further north.
* In 1770 Captain James Cook sailed up the coast. Joseph Banks, who was travelling with Cook, noted Bundjalung on Seven Mile Beach and was surprised that "not one was once observed to stop and look toward the ship; they pursued their way in all appearance entirely unmoved by the neighbourhood of so remarkable an object as a ship must necessarily be to people who have never seen one."
* The area around Lennox Head was low-lying coastal scrubland. It had little rainforest and held little interest for the cedar cutters who arrived in the district in the 1820s.
* By 1842 a number of former convicts had taken up land along North Creek.
* In the 1860s James Ainsworth (after whom Lake Ainsworth is named) took up land behind Seven Mile Beach. Ainsworth was a builder and contractor. He did however grow sugar cane.
* By 1865 John Skennar (after whom Skennars Head is named) had taken up land to the south of the present township.
* In 1922 Lennox Head was created as a private subdivision. The idea was to sell the blocks of land for weekender and holiday accommodation with Lake Ainsworth being the main attraction.
* By 1943 Lennox Head had a population of 149.

Lennox Head Beach (Seven Mile Beach – Visitors Guide)
Lennox Head Beach is around 20 minutes by car south of Byron Bay or 15 minutes north of Ballina .
Lennox Head Beach is the southern end of Seven Mile Beach, a vast unprotected beach that spans north from Lennox Head’s The Point all the way to Broken Head. As an aside, Seven Mile Beach is actually little under five and a half miles (8.5km) long, and while it is unpatrolled north of the surf club, it does turn dog-friendly for a length (see photo of notice for specifics) and is a perfect strolling beach .
The Surf Club is located near Lake Ainsworth and the Lake Ainsworth Holiday Park at the northern end of Lennox Village. The Lennox Head-Alstonville Surf Life Saving Club patrols the stretch of this beach in front of the surf club throughout the summer; the dates and times are listed in the lifeguard services guide. There are also public restrooms, showers, and a convenient club tuck shop selling hot and cold drinks and delectable snacks.
In February 2007, Lennox Head became the third and largest surfing venue in Australia to be recognised. National Surfing Reserve stretches from the Surf Club south to Flat Rock Beach, and is recognised for its environmental, cultural, and historical value to Australian surfing . The Reserve is home to four major surf breaks, the most well-known, filmed, and photographed of which is, of course, Lennox Point. Definitely not a beginner’s place, it’s a packed wave at best, but the vistas from the headland are breathtaking, leaving little doubt about its Reserve status.
Can you swim at Lennox Heads?
Yes, you can swim at Lennox Heads beach , but bear in mind to take precaution in open waters. Always choose to swim where there are lifeguards patrolling the area.
Swim in the patrolled area and between the flags due to the numerous rips. In the south, the coffeerock reduces the energy of the waves that reach the shore, resulting in a low energy reflective beach fronted by a coffeerock ‘lagoon’ with larger waves crashing on the coffeerock’s seaward edge.
How long is Lennox Beach?
Seven Mile Beach (NSW 21) is actually just 8.5 kilometres (5.3 miles) long, and while beach is eroding at the southern end, it has not lost two miles since its name. This is an unique beach that stretches south from the rain forest-covered Jews Head, backed by the 2 km wide undeveloped Newrybo Swamp and freshwater Lake Ainsworth, both of which are part of a low Pleistocene barrier system.
Can you drive 4WD on 7 Mile Beach?
Camp Drewe Road provides access for 4WD vehicles to Seven Mile Beach in Lennox Head. A beach access permit must be purchased before driving your 4WD onto Seven Mile Beach.
A beach access permit can be purchased at the automated kiosk along Camp Drewe Road (payment by card only).
2022/23 fees:
- 1 day permit $22
- 30 day permit $58
- 6 month permit $80
- Annual Permit $138
Can you fish at Lennox Head?
Anglers can wade out from Seven Mile Beach’s southern end across the reef of exposed black rock to catch bream, mackerel, snapper, and the rare large jewfish. For the more daring (or foolish), there is a place known as ‘The Spike’ just south of Lennox, near shag rock.
Is Lennox Head good for surfing?
A perennial top ten surf beach in Australia. Because it is powerful and can be crowded with top-tier local surfers, the right-hand point break is not a suitable spot to learn to surf. If this isn’t your first time on the water, you might want to take advantage of the opportunity to experience the famed waves.

Thursday, 02 May 2024
The Mayor and Councillors of the Ballina Shire issue an urgent call to our community members and leaders to take a stand against domestic violence.
The escalating violence against women across Australia is deeply concerning for the community of Ballina Shire.
Join us 4pm Sunday 5 May 2024 at the Ballina Indoor Sports Centre.
Speakers will include:
- Mayor Sharon Cadwallader
- Dave Harmon, Rotary Club of Ballina on Richmond
- Former New South Wales Detective Sergeant Damian Loone.
Dave Harmon, is instrumental in coordinating the DV Community Walk in November each year to advocate and raise awareness of domestic and family violence. David is a member of the Rotary Club of Ballina on Richmond, who are leading a ‘Rotary Says NO to Domestic and Family Violence’ campaign across 16 countries with over 1300 Rotary Clubs involved.
Damian Loone brings decades of expertise in addressing domestic violence and advocating for victims' rights. His insight is invaluable as we come together to combat this pervasive issue.
Mr Loone calls on all men in Ballina Shire to make a stand to end violence against women, “we as men stand with our families and partners against violence.”
Mayor Cadwallader says “it is with heavy hearts we acknowledge over 30 women that have been tragically murdered in Australia this year. This alarming statistic, keeps climbing, and underscores the urgent need for action. Shockingly, about 1 in 4 Australian women have experienced violence from an intimate partner or family member since the age of 15.”
This gathering serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity, honouring those who have lost their lives to domestic violence and standing with victim-survivors.
This is a local, inclusive, family-friendly community event to raise awareness and to bring an end to domestic and family violence.
Bring Your Posters
We encourage attendees to bring along posters with messages to stop this violence. Let your voice be heard as we stand together against domestic violence.
Time is of the essence. We demand more from our government and legal system to protect and prevent gender-based violence in Australia. It's time to change attitudes and ensure women do not feel silenced. Let us work together to empower women to speak up and change attitudes men have towards women.
For support or assistance, please call the toll-free number 1800RESPECT or visit 1800respect.org.au
