Everything You'll Need to Know for a Trip to Disneyland

travel to disneyland from canada

Want to visit the famous Anaheim theme park but don’t know where to begin? Consider your Disney vacation sorted. You’re in for much more than a visit with Mickey Mouse and a handful of rides, because Disneyland Resort is actually home to two separate theme parks: Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park. They’re located directly across from each other but host a different set of enjoyable rides, shows, and lands, some of which you won’t find at other Disney Parks worldwide. If you’re curious about stepping inside Sleeping Beauty Castle or Star Wars : Galaxy’s Edge, experiencing the world of Cars , and riding every glorious Disney attraction on your next trip to the California parks, we’re here to help you discover the Happiest Place on Earth. Here’s everything you’ll need for a first visit to Disneyland — besides a pair of Mickey ears, of course.

The Sleeping Beauty Castle

The original Magic Kingdom is known for its classic attractions and quintessential “main street” charm, but hosts plenty of electrifying rides throughout its themed lands. Disneyland Park is also home to the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle, which sits in the center of the park.

Attractions and Rides

From Jungle Cruise and It’s A Small World to Pirates of the Caribbean, there are a multitude of famous family-friendly attractions at Disneyland, but that doesn’t mean it’s short on thrills. With Star Tours’ Star Wars simulations, the rollicking Indiana Jones Adventure and Disneyland’s multiple mountain-themed coasters, it’s home to many of Disney’s most exciting rides.

Star Wars : Galaxy Edge

Today’s most-discussed attractions and rides are tucked away inside Star Wars : Galaxy’s Edge, Disneyland’s newest land. Here, you can encounter the Resistance while eating otherworldly food, adopt a plush Tauntaun after visiting Oga’s Cantina, or be apprehended by Stormtroopers before stepping foot on the land’s two rides — Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, which allows flight crews to operate the famed starship and Star Wars : Rise of the Resistance, a monumental battle opening in January.

Restaurants

Disneyland offers all the theme park staples — ice cream, corn dogs, and plenty of churros — but sit-down restaurants like Plaza Inn and River Belle Terrace are first-rate. Foodies should hit New Orleans Square for mint juleps and Mickey Mouse beignets or try indulgent tableside offerings at Cafe Orleans or Blue Bayou Restaurant.

If you want a cocktail with all those treats, you’ll need to look elsewhere. Alcohol is only served at one place inside Disneyland Park: Oga’s Cantina, which is located within Star Wars : Galaxy’s Edge.

Disney California Adventure Park

Compared to Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Park is significantly newer. Themed to highlight the landscape, culture, and history of California as a whole, it channels San Francisco’s waterside roots, Hollywood’s golden era, and the state’s national parks throughout several different lands, with its newest, Cars Land and Pixar Pier, infusing silver screen attractions within the coastal design.

If you’re visiting both parks in one day, note that admission is per individual park; you’ll need an upgraded “park hopper” ticket to visit both.

Disney California Adventure Park's Film Attractions

Disneyland’s sister park has two colorful lands that revere cherished animated films. Cars Land brings the movie’s awe-inspiring Route 66 scenery to life with shops, restaurants, and multiple rides, including the joyous Radiator Springs Racers. At Pixar Pier — formerly Paradise Pier — guests can ride a coaster, carousel, or spin ride that pays homage to films like Incredibles , Toy Story 2 , and Inside Out while taking in food, shopping, and entertainment honoring the iconic movie studio.

And, in 2020, a new Marvel-themed area at Disney California Adventure Park will allow superhero wannabes to interact with the Avengers like never before.

Disney California Adventure Rides

There’s plenty to ride at Disney California Adventure Park, but highlights include virtual hang gliding on Soarin’ Around the World, the frenzied arcade shoot-out of Toy Story Midway Mania!, and the soaking wet joy of Grizzly River Run’s roaring rapids ride. Its newest thrill, Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: BREAKOUT!, pairs the popular Marvel characters with a frenetic drop ride soundtracked by Star-Lord’s vintage tunes.

Disney California Adventure Park Dining

There are fantastic quick-service meals throughout the park, but Cozy Cone Motel in Cars Land is the most visually pleasing place to devour pretzel bites and stuffed bread cones. Pacific Wharf’s eateries and Pixar Pier’s Lamplight Lounge make for popular sit-down options, but the glamorous Carthay Circle Restaurant remains Disneyland Resort’s finest in-park dining option.

Disney California Adventure Park Drink Options

Unlike Disneyland, Disney California Adventure Park serves beer, wine, and cocktails throughout its restaurants, stands, and food kiosks. You can’t go wrong with wine at Mendocino Terrace, colorful concoctions at Lamplight Lounge, or craft cocktails at Carthay Circle Lounge.

Nighttime Entertainment

Both parks offer nighttime entertainment so noteworthy that park-hopping guests will struggle to choose just one. Disneyland Park’s nightly fireworks are ever-popular, but so is Fantasmic!, a waterfront retelling of Fantasia with beloved Disney characters, special effects, and pyrotechnics. (Pro tip: watch the show performed on Disneyland’s Rivers of America, and stay put for a unique view of fireworks.)

Disney California Adventure Park offers World of Color, where lighting, projections, and special effects combine to feed the show’s stunning display atop dancing water.

Disneyland Resort operates three on-property hotels: the seaside-themed Disney’s Paradise Pier, the park-influenced Disneyland Hotel, and the craftsman-style Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel. There are many “good neighbor” hotels nearby, but Disneyland hotels come with perks, including Extra Magic Hour Early Admission for additional time in the parks.

Downtown Disney

Disneyland Resort’s theme parks and hotels are located around Downtown Disney, a strip of shops, restaurants, and entertainment that’s open to the public. It’s home to many themed eateries and specialized Disney boutiques including World of Disney, a massive shop that’s ideal for last-minute souvenirs. Park guests can even hop on the monorail from Downtown Disney for an extra-special entrance into Disneyland Park.

Disneyland Planning Guide 2024: Start Here to Plan Your Disneyland Trip

travel to disneyland from canada

We cover everything from finding the best hotel near Disneyland to the most recent Disneyland updates to advice on saving money on Disneyland tickets. Our guide to planning a trip to Disneyland is laid out in the order of steps you would go in as begin planning to make it as simple as possible for first time guests and well-seasoned park goers!

You can read all about what Disneyland is like right now and the  Disneyland reservations system in our guides.

Common Questions:

  • Where to find best discount Disneyland tickets?
  • Where to find cheap Disney World tickets?
  • How to find discount Universal Studios Hollywood tickets?
  • What should I bring to Disneyland?
  • Which are the best hotels near Disneyland?
  • Which airport is closest to Disneyland?
  • When is Disneyland least crowded?
  • Should I go to Disneyland or Walt Disney World?
  • How much does Disney FastPass cost in 2024?
  • How do I navigate Disneyland with a wheelchair?

In this planning guide:

When to Visit Disneyland 2024

Your first step to planning a Disneyland vacation is to first decide on when you would like to visit the park! There are special events to consider throughout the year along with your own schedule to consider. In order to help you decide when is the best time to visit Disneyland consult our Disneyland crowd calendar which includes crowd predictions along with monthly events for the entire year.

Visiting Disneyland during the summer is often the most obvious choice for guests due to summer vacation for school aged kids. This is a great time to visit Disneyland as you will enjoy longer operating hours and newly introduced events or entertainment. Our guide to summer at Disneyland covers the pros and cons of a summer vacation at the resort. Spring at Disneyland can be another great time to visit, especially if you're looking for discounts for on-site Disney hotels and cheaper airfare.

Also consider the Disneyland Park hours and Disney California Adventure park hours when planning.

Disneyland Sleeping Beauty Castle Christmas

The holiday season is also another popular time to enjoy the parks as Disneyland goes all out for both Halloween and Christmas . You can enjoy seasonal ride overlays, an abundance of decorations, seasonal treats and themed entertainment. Picking what time of year to visit Disneyland will alter your resort experience in regards to the type of entertainment you may experience at the park, decorations, crowds, weather and even prices.

Haunted Mansion Holiday

Prices will always be higher during holiday weeks like spring break, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Labor Day, etc. Crowd levels also usually coordinate with these higher prices. Our guide to experiencing crowds at Disneyland help you prepare for surviving anything. Be sure to read our top Disneyland tips here .

You may also want to take into account the usual yearly refurbishments that may take place at Disneyland when picking your trip dates- these are just the yearly ride closures for usual maintenance or closures for seasonal overlays that happen each year.

You may also consider visiting for a birthday or anniversary which are great milestones to celebrate on Disney! In fact, Disney will help you celebrate those special birthdays and anniversaries .

Regardless of what time of year you pick, there is always a pro/con to each and every day of the year is just as magical as the rest!

Disneyland's New Reservation System 2024

Once you've picked your dates for your Disneyland vacation your next step is to purchase your tickets! You can save nearly $20 per ticket for travel when you book with our recommended travel partner  Get Away Today . They offer the best discounts while providing top notch customer service. They have worked with Disney for over 30 years selling millions of 2-5 day discount Disney tickets and give our Mickey Visit readers (who book through links on our website) an exclusive discount rate on tickets. I highly recommend going that route for your Disneyland theme park tickets. You can read more about the different ticket options, how many days you need and more in our discount Disneyland guide.

If you're looking to do Disneyland on a budget, I've got you covered in our budget tips for Disneyland guide. Our list of budget tips will help you save money on park tickets, hotel, dining, and includes information on how to save 5% on Disney gift cards!

It's not enough to just have your theme park tickets to Disneyland, you also need to make a reservation for each day of your visit once you've purchased your tickets! This is extremely important because reservations can run out as your trip dates get closer and since this new reservation system has been implemented it hasn't been uncommon to see guests without a reservation be turned away at the gates… even if they have tickets.

Theme park reservations are available on a 90 day rolling basis for one day tickets and Magic Key Holders and a 120 day basis for multi-day ticket holders (available via our travel partner) in order for Disney to access guest availability and you should reserve your park days the instant you purchase your park tickets. You can easily change these later if you need to but better to book them once you've picked your dates. Our guide to the Disneyland theme park reservation system can walk you through how to make a reservation.

What Disneyland Hotel To Stay In

There are two types of hotels to choose from when visiting the Disneyland Resort. You can either stay at an on-property hotel that is owned by Disney or stay at a Disneyland Good Neighbor hotel, a third party hotel approved by Disney. There is a large price different between these two but the on-property Disney hotels all place you within the “Disney bubble” of being able to access Disneyland by walking through the popular Downtown Disney District which connects the entrance to the theme park and the hotels.

Downtown Disney Disneyland Planning Guide

Downtown Disney contains plenty of shopping, restaurants and live entertainment. It's a great place to spend your arrival day to get your family in the Disney mood before their full day at the parks.

Disney Grand Californian hotel room

The are three Disney owned hotels with three different price tiers: Paradise Pier Hotel , the Disneyland Hotel and the Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Each of our reviews for these hotels detail the perks each offer along with the theme, dining and Disney details the hotels offer. You can also set aside a day of relaxation at the newly imagined Tenaya Stone Spa inside the Grand Californian with a full body massage, foot treatment, facial, and more! Plus they even offer fitness classes , some inside the parks before they open.

You can also bundle your Disneyland tickets and hotel into one Disneyland all inclusive vacation package. You can find more information on exclusive discounts, the best places to find powerful discounts, and when to book your package in our Disneyland vacation packages guide.

For guests that are looking to save money or prefer the variety the off-site hotels offer at Disneyland, there is a plethora of options near Disneyland! This is actually one of the best perks Disneyland has over Walt Disney World. Due to its close proximity of being centrally located in the city of Anaheim it's a breeze to use a hotel nearby and walk to the theme park each day. In fact, some of the off-site hotels are actually fewer steps to the entrance gates than some of the Disney owned hotels.

Outside view of Tropicana Hotel sign

Our comprehensive guide to hotels at Disneyland covers our favorite hotels near Disneyland plus includes a detailed list of our personal reviews of these hotels with tips on how to save money by booking through our trusted travel partner. If you're the type of family that plans to spend numerous hours in the park and little time at your hotel, you can save hundreds by staying off-site at a no frills (but clean!) hotel and spend that money saved inside Disneyland instead.

Traveling to Disneyland

The Disneyland Resort sits in the middle of numerous nearby airports giving you plenty of options to fly in to the resort. My personal two favorites are Long Beach Airport and John Wayne Airport due to their close proximity (less than 20-30 minutes away!) and their small size. It makes traveling a breeze and I always chose to pay a bit more to fly into Long Beach over Los Angelas Airport which is a much larger airport. LA is also much further away and you will have a longer car ride to Disneyland with plenty of traffic to hold you up.

You can read more about the airports and transportation options to and from the airports in our Disneyland transportation guide.

Where to Eat on Your Disneyland Vacation

The Disneyland Resort provides a wide variety of different types of food. You will find classic amusement park food mixed in with upscale restaurants. The food quality is outstanding and whether you are eating a corn dog or pork shank, it will be the best you have ever had.

travel to disneyland from canada

Disneyland classifies their dining options in two categories: table service and quick service. Table service is defined as restaurants where you are seated with a typical waiter/waitress and offer advance dining reservations you can reserve 60 days in advance. You can book a reservation on the  official Disneyland website or call the reservation hotline at (714) 781-3463. Most of the restaurants are Disneyland that are considered table service book up in advance so its highly recommended you book reservations for the ones you're interested in.

View of Pixar Pier from Lamplight Lounge at Disneyland

Quick service refers to walk up locations which typically also offer mobile ordering you can use with the Disneyland app or just a regular walk up line. This is a quick grab and go option and also tends to be more cost effective. Most of the quick service locations at Disneyland offers really great food!

travel to disneyland from canada

One popular experience that you shouldn't overlook, especially if you have kids, is the character dining at Disneyland! You can find character dining inside the park and at the Disney owned hotels offering a variety of experiences from Princess dining to dinner with Goofy! You can read more about each experience offered in our full guide to character dining at Disneyland .

World of Color Dessert Party

Another popular dining experience at Disneyland is the option of reserving dining experiences that come with reserved seating for popular nighttime entertainment! These experiences are called dining packages and are offered for the popular nighttime spectaculars at Disneyland. This is a great way to combine a great dining experience while also taking the hassle out of saving a spot for a popular show in advance.

Read through our full guide to dining at Disneyland to see a review of all the different restaurants at Disneyland, tips on saving money on food and how to get the best dining reservations.

Disneyland 2024 Packing List

Once you've made all your theme park reservations, dining reservations and have all those finer details made the next big question becomes…. what should I pack? You want to be prepared for your Disneyland vacation but you also don't want to be so overburdened in the parks you're tipping over backwards with a giant backpack! Our Disneyland packing list helps cover everything you should bring so you come prepared.

Disneyland will have you covered with essentials if you do find you forgot something crucial but you will pay a higher price. It's good in a pinch especially if you forgot something you need immediately in the moment like headache or stomach medicine. Yes, you can even find medicine at Disneyland!

If you want to avoid that giant backpack from tipping you over, you could always rent a locker ! Disneyland offers daily locker rentals which is a great solution if you find yourself wanting to store the extra snacks or lunch you brought, the jackets you no longer need or the extra souvenirs you bought.

Disneyland Silhouettes- Disneyland Planning Guide

Disneyland has a great selection of souvenirs which can easily run your wallet down before you have a chance to blink. But there's some souvenirs that are more timeless than others and help preserve the memory of your trip. Read through my top recommendations to the best Disneyland souvenirs to see what are the most unique souvenirs you can find at the parks that are longer lasting memories than the typical t-shirt.

A great idea for Disneyland souvenirs that doesn't break the budget and that kids love are to collect the pressed pennies around the Disneyland.

Another popular item to collect and trade at Disneyland are Disney pins which you can trade with other guests and inside the Disney shops. Our guide to Disney Pin Trading gives an overview of this time honored tradition.

Lego Store in Downtown Disney

And if you find yourself wanting to purchase something that's too large to pack into your suitcase, Disneyland also gives you the option to ship your souvenirs back home. This is especially helpful since purchasing lightsabers has become a popular option! You can also find shipping options from many of the local stores in Downtown Disney which is a good option if you find yourself splurging on the big Lego set!

Disneyland 2024 Park Ride Touring Plans

Disneyland Resort includes two theme parks: Disneyland Park and California Adventure Park . Disneyland is the original theme park which is home to all the classic rides such as Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mad Tea Party plus the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle. It is also the theme park where you can find the popular Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge! California Adventure Park opened in 2001 and is now home to favorites such as Cars Land, Pixar Pier plus the new addition of Avengers Campus.

You can orient yourself with our map of Disney California Adventure and map of Disneyland Park .

The great thing about Disneyland and one of the biggest differences from Walt Disney World is how easy it is to park hop! Disneyland and California Adventure are located mere steps away from each other making it incredibly easy to walk between each other throughout the day if you wanted. So in the case of visiting Disneyland, I highly recommend you purchase a park hopper ticket .

its a small world disneyland planning guide

One of the biggest questions we get from guests about to visit Disneyland is: how do we beat the crowds? There are two quick and easy methods to doing this that can work well for families of all dynamics. Arrive early or stay until park closing. Or you can hit the hotel in the afternoon for a nap and do both! Crowds will always be dramatically more manageable- even during peak travel times- in the morning and end of the night. Nighttime doesn't require much strategy, just stay until after the fireworks end and hang in there until the park closes. Most families will leave after the fireworks and the lines will decrease significantly- even on holidays! And don't forget about using single rider lines!

Disney Genie+ is a paid program at Disneyland that replaced the previous FastPass/MaxPass program at the parks. This paid service includes access to quicker lines to 15 attractions in both parks plus the option to pay for access for certain individual attractions. Essentially for certain attractions there's two line options: a standby line and a Lightning Lane.

The Genie+ program gives you access to the Lightning Lane which is significantly shorter than the standby line. It costs $20 per person, per day and include your access to ride reservations plus all your photo downloads for the day. Disneyland has professional photographers stationed around the park to take your picture in front of iconic areas like the castle, the main entrance, Main Street, U.S.A., etc. You can also purchase these photos separately through their service called Disneyland PhotoPass .

Disneyland Haunted Mansion

You reserve a return time in advance via the Disneyland app to use the Lightning Lane and you can book a return time every two hours or after you have redeemed your last booked Lightning Lane reservation. There is also the option to purchase access to the Lightning Lane to select popular attractions individually but these attractions aren't included in the general per day purchase.

I highly recommend you read more about the Disneyland Genie+ program in our guide so you're prepared before your visit. Our guide features the basics of what this paid service can do, the free service that's included for all guests plus tips on how to best maximize its use and get your moneys worth!

Fireworks and Nighttime Entertainment at Disneyland 2024

One of the aspects that makes Disneyland so special is the nighttime spectaculars with the most infamous being the Disneyland fireworks shows . Fireworks take place nightly during peak seasons (Spring break, summer, Halloween and Christmas) and on weekends. Each time of the year will feature a different fireworks show as some are changed out seasonly depending on what event is being celebrated at the parks. These fireworks are a must see Disney experience with state of the art projections, lighting effects and some featuring original musical scores.

Disabilities at Disneyland 2024

One of the best things about Disneyland is the strides towards inclusivity it has taken by ensuring that the theme park goes above and beyond for guests with disabilities. Disneyland strives to make their parks accessible for all guests and offers accommodations that may go overlooked for many guests that may benefit from them.

All of the attractions at Disneyland are wheelchair accessible with each attraction having varying degrees of accessibility from staying in the wheelchair on an accessible boat on “it’s a small world” or transferring directly to the ride vehicle. Disneyland offers a variety of assistive listening systems to handheld captioning devices for guests with hearing disabilities. There is also sign language interpretation available for select live experiences and character interactions on certain days of the week.

DAS (Disability Access Service) is a tool that Disneyland and Disney California Adventure have provided its guests for those who cannot wait in a normal line queue for a variety of medical reasons. DAS grants qualifying guests a return time (equal to the standby wait) for the attraction, one at a time, and then guests can access the Lightning Lane to ride. Guests that have a mobility disability can access rides without using DAS since all line queues are wheelchair accessible.

Disneyland also offers an extensive range of dietary accommodations at their restaurants for guests that may have allergies or certain dietary preferences like vegetarian/vegan diets . Disneyland is also a size inclusive park with many ride vehicles fitting larger sized guests, our guide offers some insight on what to expect with ride vehicle size at Disney.

Read more about disabilities at Disneyland in our comprehensive guide so you're prepared for any accommodations you or your group may need.

How to Book a Trip to Disneyland on Points

Anyone who has been to a Disney resort, be it Disney World or Disneyland, knows that it comes with a hefty price tag. With some careful planning, though, you can reduce the costs with some strategic moves.

Prior to the pandemic, I wrote a couple of posts on travelling to Disney World on points . This past summer, we spent a week in California and visited Disneyland, California Adventure Park, and Universal Studios Hollywood.

In This Post

Diversify your points currencies, use companion vouchers or points for flights to disneyland, save on disneyland accommodations using points, redeem points for a disney resort stay, book theme park tickets with points, maximize earning with disney gift cards, putting it all together.

Saving for a Disney trip requires the same strategy we’ve been employing all along: credit card welcome bonuses and maximizing earnings on daily spending. Specific to Disney, the difference is in which cards one needs to sign up for, and which points currencies one needs to earn.

Generally speaking, we tend to focus a lot on American Express Membership Rewards , Aeroplan , and RBC Avion for their versatility in flight and hotel redemptions. You’ll still need these currencies when it comes to booking your flights and hotels, but when it comes to other costs, you’ll need to focus your strategies elsewhere.

When booking a family trip to Disneyland, using points from a variety of programs comes into play. For flights and hotels, you can use the usual suspects, while to pay for Disney park passes and other incidentals, you can explore various flexible points programs.

Of course, the bigger the family you have, the more you may need to diversify your point currencies to cover the costs.

Flights to Disneyland are easy to book with cash or points, as Air Canada and WestJet both provide flights into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). The only thing is that LAX is located up to over an hour’s drive from Disneyland, depending on traffic.

If you’re travelling from Calgary or Vancouver, WestJet runs a direct flight into John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, which can cut the drive to Disneyland by more than half. Air Canada also flies from Vancouver to Orange County, so if you’re based out of Western Canada, be sure to consider both options.

For most families, flying economy will be the way to go, given that most flights to Disneyland will only be three to five hours in duration.

If you’re booking with cash, then make use of a companion voucher to reduce the cost. You’ll want your partner to get one, too, if you’re travelling as a family of four of more, which cuts down the cost by up to 50%.

CIBC is still offering a  Buddy Pass  as part of its sign up bonus for the CIBC Aeroplan Visa Infinite Card . With no additional costs other than the taxes and fees for the second ticket, this is essentially a 2-for-1 ticket to anywhere in North America.

Although less appealing, with an Amex Aeroplan Reserve Card , you can earn an Annual Worldwide Companion Pass redeemable on Air Canada flights after spending $25,000 each year. Unlike the Buddy Pass, there is a nominal base fare that is charged to redeem the pass that ranges from $99 to $599, depending on your destination.

Keep in mind the pass is deposited after your annual renewal date, rather than right after meeting the spend.

Signing up for the WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard will entitle you an annual companion voucher. This companion voucher usually shows up within a month or two of getting the card.

Even with a $119 base fare for a second ticket within North America, you can still find great savings with WestJet’s companion voucher. If you’re travelling during peak seasons, there can be considerable savings.

Keep in mind that you can also apply WestJet Dollars to your booking. Just be sure to keep an eye on WestJet’s  taxes and fees , which you’ll be required to pay no matter what.

When booking on points with Aeroplan, the redemption rates for economy flights within North America are usually within the predicted range, even with dynamic pricing . The only exception is if you’re travelling during peak season, or booking really close to your date of travel, where the prices are likely to be high.

When we booked our flights from Toronto to Los Angeles in the summer, we were able to book round-trip for a total of 20,000 Aeroplan points per person, having booked six months out.

Most families will probably opt to stay in a hotel, and most of us in the points game will lean towards a Marriott, Hilton, or Hyatt property. There are at least a couple of options around Disneyland for each brand.

In Canada, Marriott Bonvoy points are the easiest currency to accumulate of the three. I’ll focus on the Marriott properties, as we stayed at two of them.

The Westin Anaheim , Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance , and the  Fairfield Anaheim Resort are the closest Marriott properties to Disneyland. The Westin is around a 20-minute walk to the park entrances, while the Courtyard and Fairfield are only around ten minutes by foot.

The redemption rates for the coming year are as follows:

  • The Westin Anaheim costs between 52,000–70,000 Bonvoy points.
  • The Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance costs between 52,000–70,000 Bonvoy points.
  • The Fairfield Anaheim Resort costs between 31,000–42,000 Bonvoy points.

If you have a few Free Night Award certificate from your Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card  or your Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card , you can burn them at the Fairfield. Recall that award certificates can be topped-up by up to 15,000 points , effectively making your annual certificate worth up to 50,000 points.

The Westin will cost on average $300 (USD) per night before taxes. It’s harder to justify redeeming points if you find rates around $300 (USD).

Since it’s a Fine Hotels & Resorts (FHR) property, if you hold an American Express Platinum Card , you can get pretty good value paying the cash rate when considering the perks that come along with it.

The Courtyard costs on average $300–500 (USD) before tax, and tends to be the most expensive of the three. As we found out, this was for a good reason, for its ever-so-popular onsite waterpark.

The Fairfield is the most economical option, costing around $200–300 (USD) before taxes. Unfortunately, unlike other Fairfields, breakfast at this property is not complimentary.

We stayed at both the Westin Anaheim and the Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park, so stay tuned for upcoming reviews.

Amex sometimes offers transfer bonuses to Marriott Bonvoy , or offers statement credits for Marriott stays through Amex Offers , which can help knock down the cash cost even further.

Disneyland has three official Disney Resorts, which are located right beside the parks. Some even have direct entry into the parks, which can be very convenient for reducing transit times.

You can expect the cost to be on average $600–800 (USD) a night, though, which is quite steep.

I have yet to stay at any of the Disneyland resorts, as I find I can get better value out of my elite status with hotel programs. However, if convenience is a priority and you want to experience Disney hospitality at its best, there are a few ways you can book them at a fraction of the cost.

The trick here is to use a points currency that can be redeemed as a statement credit to offset the cost. This is when programs such as HSBC Rewards , TD Rewards , or Scotiabank Scene+ come into play.

  • HSBC Rewards points can be redeemed towards travel at 0.5 cents per point (cpp).
  • For travel booked through the Expedia for TD travel portal, TD Rewards points can be redeemed at 0.5cpp. Disney Resorts can be booked through Expedia for TD, allowing for a slightly more favourable redemption.
  • Scotiabank Scene+ points can be redeemed for travel at 1cpp.

Each bank has a few cards under their portfolio that earns their respective reward currencies. Based on the redemption rates above, here are a few examples of how much you could offset your stay by:

  • The HSBC World Elite Mastercard  has a current sign-up bonus of 80,000 points, equivalent to $400.
  • The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card  has a sign-up bonus of 100,000 TD Rewards points, equivalent to $500.
  • The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card  has a sign-up bonus of 40,000 Scene+ points, equivalent to $400 towards your stay.

On Expedia for TD, you can book a room for five people at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel for $644.01 or 129,000 TD Rewards points. If you don’t have the full amount, you can apply a partial redemption to the booking, effectively reducing the overall cost of your stay.

If you play the Miles and Points game in two-player mode , you can sign up for one, two, or more of these cards to cover the cost of your stay.

Lastly, Amex Membership Rewards points can also be redeemed at 1cpp for travel purchases. Note that this isn’t the best use of these points, so I’d suggest focusing your efforts on the other points currencies we’ve discussed above.

One of biggest costs on a trip to Disneyland are the actual theme park tickets. Luckily, two Canadian loyalty programs allow you to redeem points against theme park tickets: Air Miles Dream Miles and TD Rewards.

For TD Rewards, you can purchase the tickets through Expedia for TD under the “Things To Do” category. To see what dates are available, enter a longer date range in the search field.

If you aren’t looking for a multi-day pass, then perhaps you can use your points towards a single day admission to Universal Studios Hollywood, Legoland, or Knott’s Berry Farm instead. I mean, if you’re in Anaheim already, you may as well visit a few other parks, right?

Air Miles allows redemptions for Disney tickets through redtag.ca. After you sign in to your account, you can find US theme parks under Travel, and then US Parks.

Unlike Expedia for TD, which offers tickets to a variety of theme parks and attractions, Air Miles Vacations only offers tickets to four US theme parks. Luckily, Disney World, Disneyland, and Universal Studios are included.

Keep in mind that only Dream Miles can be redeemed against travel. So before you start earning, you’ll want to make sure you have selected your Air Miles earning preference to Dream Miles, as opposed to Cash Miles.

Air Miles can be relatively easy to accumulate. Amex has three different Air Miles credit cards, and Bank of Montreal has two.

Personally, I’d opt for the BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard , which currently has a welcome bonus of 2,000 Air Miles and a waived annual fee.

If you’re still short on a ticket or two, buying tickets from a trusted third party site like Undercover Tourist  will save you a few dollars off admission tickets. Sometimes, they run promotions for an additional $5 off.

You can also buy tickets directly from  Disneyland’s website , and most of the time, the tickets are at cost. Sometimes, there are promotions for Canadians that have offered up to 35% off.

If you’re buying tickets directly from Disney, consider buying a Disney gift card from a grocery store on a credit card that earns 5x the points on grocery purchases to pay for them, so you can at least maximize your earn. There are a few credit options here, including the American Express Cobalt Card , the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card , and the BMO eclipse Visa Infinite Card .

You can also buy Disney gift cards to use while at Disneyland. Almost everything in Disneyland can be paid for with them, including meals, souvenirs, and even Disney Resort stays.

Balances on Disney gift cards can be combined online , up to a maximum of $1,000 per card. This is great, as you can just consolidate your cards.

So, what will it take for a family for four from Toronto to visit Disneyland next March Break?

Let’s assume you and your partner currently hold the following credit cards with the following perks:

  • American Express Platinum Card × 1 = $200 annual travel credit
  • Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card × 2 = 2 Free Night Awards
  • Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card × 2  = 2 Free Night Awards
  • American Express Cobalt Card × 1 = Earn 5x at grocery stores

With some planning, you decide to sign up for the following credit cards and promotions with the following perks at least six months prior to your trip:

  • WestJet RBC World Elite Mastercard × 2 = 2 annual companion vouchers and $500 WestJet Dollars
  • TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card × 2 = 200,000 TD Rewards points
  • BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard × 1 = 2,000 Air Miles
  • American Express Air Miles Platinum Credit Card × 1 = 2,000 Air Miles
  • Various Sobeys promos throughout the year = 900 Air Miles

To help reduce the cost of flights, you could then make use of your points and vouchers. An example of what it might look like is:

  • 2 × $119 annual companion vouchers + 2 × $700 base fare + 4 × $170 in taxes = $2,318, with $500 WestJet Dollars applied to bring the total cost to  $1,818  out of pocket on WestJet.

For accommodations, you’d make use of Free Night Awards and American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts, which could look like:

  • Four nights at the Fairfield Anaheim Resort using Free Night Awards = $0
  • One night at the Courtyard Anaheim Theme Park Entrance at $624 per night after taxes booked through Amex Travel, applying the $200 annual travel credit with the Amex Platinum Card = $424 (or redeeming 59,000 Bonvoy points)

To book your actual Disneyland park passes with Genie+, you could approach it with the flexible points currencies as follows:

  • Ticket 1: $525.45, bought through Expedia for TD with 100,000 TD Rewards points for $500 on your account = $25.45
  • Ticket 2: $525.45, bought through Expedia for TD with 100,000 TD Rewards points for $500 on partner’s account = $25.45
  • Ticket 3: Redeem 4,828 Air Miles = $0
  • Ticket 4: Buy from the Disneyland website with Disney gift cards bought from Sobeys using your American Express Cobalt card = $525.45

To sum it all up, the total cost of trip before reward redemptions would be $3,480 for the flights, $2,632 for the hotels, and $2,101.80 tickets. This results in a total cost of $8,213.80.

By using Miles and Points to offset the cost, the total cost of trip reduces the price to  $2,818.35,  or a discount of 65%.

Once you factor in the annual fees for the credit cards, the total cost jumps to $4,415.35, or a discount of 54%. On the upside, not only have you cut the cost in half, but you’d still get to enjoy the suite of benefits from your credit cards for the remainder of the year.

Disneyland doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and you can easily save on flights, accommodations, theme park tickets, and more. As with any trip with points, it comes down to planning.

The key is to diversify your points strategy, and perhaps focus on points currencies you may normally overlook, like TD Rewards, Air Miles, and Scotiabank Scene+.

This is just one example of how to take advantage of different reward programs to offset the cost of a family vacation. There are definitely many other combinations of cards and points currencies that can be used that may give you an even bigger discount.

It goes to show that by having just a few cards per adult in your household, you can wind up savings hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on a trip to Disneyland.

Awesome Amy! Looks almost identical to an upcoming trip to Disney World we have planned. There are some issues with 3rd party tickets, as sometimes you have to go to a special ticket desk to have them redeemed vs. being able to add them to the MyDisneyExperience app with the received voucher. Am still trying to figure this out for this trip after having a small issue a few years ago with an Airmiles ticket. It didn’t come with Early Magic Hours, and we didn’t notice it… but all of our purchased ones did. It worked out though!

travel to disneyland from canada

That’s good to know. I redeemed my Air Miles on this last trip on Universal tickets and the tickets they sent us could be redeemed directly at the turnstiles. We bought a set of Disneyland tickets off Underground Tourist and we had no difficulty adding them to the app and didn’t have to go to the ticket desk either. Let us know if this time around Air Miles has made the tickets easier to activate.

I had used Airmiles for a previous trip to DL, and this time I’m still waiting to see if Expedia is going to add additional dates past Dec. 18th; it’s been a week with no additional ticket dates and we are going in Feb. 2023. If you google Disney 3rd party tickets, Underground Tourist indicates they’re tickets connect with the Disney MyExperience app, whereas tickets purchased elsewhere might not. Purchasing Disney gift cards at the grocery store is a GREAT way to earn some extra points though! Just don’t plan on using them for purchasing Lightning Lane or mobile order (food) as you have to re-add the gift card EACH TIME and in the app you would miss the ability to book that ride as someone else would snag it. Worth it for tickets, and purchases in person, but just in case anyone reads this far… don’t get too many more than you might need. Disney trip planning makes earning/burning points look EASY!

Great tips, thank u!

In the example above, 4828 Air Miles is giving you $390 USD in value (the price for a 3 day pass with Genie+ on Disneyland’s website). This is equivalent to $536 CDN and works out to 11.1 CPP which is what we normally value Air Miles at.

Are the Air Miles good value against the 3 day Disney tickets?

Public health authorities, government officials and our team of health-and-safety experts continue to carefully monitor health-and-safety conditions and adapt guidelines as necessary.

As we have done since we began our phased reopening, we've been very intentional and gradual in our approach to our COVID-19 health-and-safety protocols. Based on recent trends and guidance, Disneyland Resort will be making adjustments to these measures, which may continue to change at any time without notice.

We are managing attendance by requiring all Guests to obtain a reservation for park entry in advance. To enter a theme park, Guests (3 years and older) will need a valid ticket and a theme park reservation for the same day and the same park they want to visit. Theme park reservations are limited and subject to availability.

The State of California strongly recommends that all Guests be fully vaccinated or obtain a negative COVID-19 test prior to entering the Disneyland Resort. It is strongly recommended that Guests wear face coverings when indoors and in enclosed transportation. Face coverings are required for all Guests (aged 2 and older), regardless of vaccination status, in certain indoor health settings, such as in First Aid. Face coverings are optional for Guests in outdoor areas.

As always, our procedures may change as we continue to follow guidance from the state of California and local health officials, so check back to this page for the latest updates.

See below for important details to know before you visit.

Top Things You Should Know

Park reservations.

The State of California strongly recommends that all Guests be fully vaccinated or receive a negative COVID-19 test prior to entering the theme parks.

At this time, based on guidance from health authorities, neck gaiters, open-chin, triangle bandanas and face coverings containing valves, mesh material or holes of any kind are not acceptable face coverings.

Costume masks are not considered appropriate and are prohibited from being worn, in alignment with our existing rules .

Face coverings may have an integrated transparent plastic panel to aid in viewing the wearer's mouth. These face coverings should:

  • Be a fabric face covering featuring a solid plastic panel containing no openings that is attached to the fabric on all sides using tight-knit stitching

Disneyland vs disney world: all differences & which to visit.

Disneyland and Disney World are both great vacation spots, but each resort caters to different types of travelers and trips. Which should you choose?

  • Disneyland has two theme parks, while Disney World has four. The latter requires a longer stay to see everything.
  • Disneyland is walkable, but Disney World requires visitors to travel via car, monorail, boat, and bus.
  • Disneyland is typically slightly cheaper than Disney World, making it a good option for shorter trips or budget-conscious travelers.

There are six Disneyland parks worldwide, and two of them reside in the United States — but while Disneyland California and Walt Disney World Resort have notable similarities, they also have some major differences . Disney's California-based location is the first of its theme parks to open worldwide, but Walt Disney World has caught up in terms of popularity. This might be because the Florida resort is larger than the California one, allowing it to offer more accommodations and attractions.

This doesn't necessarily mean Walt Disney World is better than Disneyland; both locations are worth checking out, and each will appeal to different types of travelers. Whether someone chooses Walt Disney World or Disneyland will largely depend on what they're looking for from their vacation. It's worth learning what makes each resort unique before purchasing tickets to Disneyland or its Florida-based counterpart.

All Disney Castles At Every Disneyland Park

Disneyland has 2 parks & disney world has 4 parks (plus 2 water parks), disney world is larger & better for a longer getaway.

Probably the biggest difference between Disneyland California and Walt Disney World is the size of each resort , as the latter is much larger than its California-based counterpart. According to Travel + Leisure , Disneyland clocks in at around 500 acres, while Walt Disney World Resort is around 25,000 acres. That's a massive difference, and it shows in the number of parks at each location. Disneyland only has two theme parks: Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park . Meanwhile, Walt Disney World has four theme parks on its premises: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom.

This distinction can be helpful when planning a trip to Disney, as visitors will want to choose the location that better suits the amount of time they plan to spend there.

With four parks to cover, Disney World could be the better choice for a longer getaway . The parks at Disneyland California are easy enough to cover in a day or two. However, it's impossible to see all of Disney World in that time. This distinction can be helpful when planning a trip to Disney, as visitors will want to choose the location that better suits the amount of time they plan to spend there. Walt Disney World Resort also features two water parks — Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach — which require additional time to visit. They are great for summer trips, though.

Disneyland Is Walkable, But Walt Disney World Isn't

Walt disney world requires more travel planning.

The size difference between Disneyland and Disney World is important to note, as the latter resort also requires more travel planning. Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park are right next to one another, and they aren't far from the Downtown Disney District and Disney's Anaheim-based hotels. This means that Disneyland is a largely walkable trip , though children, elderly visitors, and people with disabilities may require additional accommodation. While walking all over Disneyland will take time and energy, it's often doable — and that's not the case for Walt Disney World .

The separate parks at Walt Disney World Resort are much further from one another, so visitors will need to plan their travels accordingly. Bringing or renting a car can be a smart choice when visiting Disney World. Of course, the resort also has buses, boats, and monorails that carry guests from one place to another. This takes extra time and must be added to any Disney World itinerary.

Disney World Has More Than 20 Disney Hotels Neary (& Disneyland Only Has 3)

The florida resort offers a wider range of options.

Disney World's larger size also allows the Florida resort to have more official Disney hotels than Disneyland California. Disneyland California has three Disney hotels nearby: the Disneyland Hotel, the Pixar Place Hotel, and the Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. These are all within walking distance of the parks, but they do limit one's choices when it comes to finding connected hotels. With Disney often offering perks through its accommodations, it's always good to find a hotel that falls under its umbrella.

Disney World has more than 20 hotels near its theme parks — and while they aren't necessarily within walking distance, they offer a wider range of themes and price points for visitors to choose from. Hotels like Disney's All-Star Movies Resort and Disney's Art of Animation Resort allow visitors to stay in a connected hotel at a lower price point. Meanwhile, lodgings like the Grand Floridian Hotel & Resort and Disney's Riviera Resort offer the opportunity for a more luxurious, pricier stay.

Disneyland Is Slightly Cheaper Than Disney World

Ticket prices are slightly cheaper & disney world warrants a longer stay.

Disneyland and Disney World are both fairly expensive to visit, but the Florida resort will typically cost visitors more money . Ticket prices for both parks vary depending on the time of year and demand, but as of this writing, a standard one-day ticket to Disneyland starts at about $134 per adult. The equivalent ticket starts at around $149 for Disney World (via Disneyland.com / DisneyWorld.com ). This may not seem like a huge difference, but depending on how many people are visiting and how many days they're staying, it can add up.

There's also the fact that Disney World offers more for guests to see, meaning they'll have to stay longer. While visitors can purchase a one-day park hopper ticket or a two-day ticket for Disneyland, they'll likely need to purchase more days if they want to see all the parks at Walt Disney World . This can make Disneyland better for those on a budget, if only slightly.

Should You Visit Disneyland California Or Walt Disney World Resort?

The resort visitors choose depends on their vacation preferences.

The decision to visit Disneyland California or Walt Disney World comes down to each traveler's preferences , as both parks cater to different types of vacations and guests. Those hoping to travel for a shorter period of time or maintain a budget may prefer Disneyland. It offers many of the same experiences and attractions, but it's possible to cover the parks in a couple of days. It can also save travelers some money, even if it's still on the pricier side of vacations overall. It's certainly better for shorter trips than Disney World, which is impossible to cover over a long weekend.

Travelers looking for longer getaways with more variety may be better off at Walt Disney World , as there are numerous parks and hotels to fill up a long trip. The options alone are much greater at Disney World, and there's more to see over a lengthier period of time. Of course, Disney World also requires more planning and traveling, so anyone looking to avoid the more tedious aspects of vacationing may prefer Disneyland . Diehard Marvel fans may also prefer the California parks, as they contain Avengers Campus.

Disneyland Resort's Massive Expansion Plans: What We Know About DisneylandForward

The Disneyland Resort is planning its biggest expansion in decades. Here's everything we know about what's coming to the Happiest Place on Earth.

Steamboat illie Mickey Mouse in Fantasmic

What Is DisneylandForward?

  • Construction
  • Disneyland Resort
  • Lands And Attractions
  • Another Theme Park

Walt Disney said that Disneyland would never be completed, and almost 70 years later, his words have been born out. Over the last seven decades we’ve seen Disneyland Park continue to grow and change, eventually becoming the Disneyland Resort, housing two theme parks, three hotels, and Downtown Disney. But now, more than 20 years after the last major Disneyland expansion, we’re entering a new era of the Disneyland Resort, as it gets ready for yet another massive expansion .

On April 16, 2024, the Anaheim City Council unanimously approved DisneylandForward, a plan to massively expand the resort as we know it. While another vote will be required on May 7, that's essentially a formality at this point. So, just what is included in DisneylandForward? What is it? When is it happening? And what will Disneyland Resort look like when it’s done? Many of these questions don’t have complete answers yet, but here’s what we know right now.

Tinkerbell in Main Street Electrical Parade

First and foremost, while Disney Experiences has been using the term DisneylandForward to describe the complete project, it’s not really one thing. There’s a lot that Disneyland Resort has planned, and while we have concept art and an Environmental Impact Report that gives us a general idea of what Disneyland is thinking, it’s unlikely that even Disney has a complete plan right now.

Some ideas are probably well thought out. Others might be more “blue sky” without specific details. What we can say is that DisneylandForward is planning for a larger Disneyland Resort that will give guests more of everything they already like. It means bigger theme parks, more hotels, and more shopping and dining options.

When Will Construction On Disneyland’s Expansion Begin?

main Street U.S.A. under construction

It’s too early to tell when the first work on any DisneylandForward project will actually begin. Bob Iger and Disney Experiences have already been teasing us with a new Avatar Experience at Disney California Adventure , which since it was promoted more than a year before the Disneyland expansion was approved, clearly wasn’t part of this larger plan. We’d expect to see that before we see anything get started with the massive project, so it could still be a year or more before ground breaks on the larger expansion.

Disneyland Resort Won’t Actually Increase In Size

Downtown Disney construction walls

While DisneylandForward is an expansion of the Disneyland Resort, one key detail is that technically, the size of the resort won’t change. Rather, the plan is to develop parts of the resort that Disney already owns and transform them into something else. We’ll see the Toy Story parking lot transformed as part of the expansion. Other parking areas around the Disneyland Hotel and the new Pixar Place Hotel will also be used as the pads for the expansion of the two theme parks.

The result will be a Disneyland Resort that will technically take up the same amount of space but will be more cohesive, with parks, hotels, and shopping and dining areas less segmented as each area blends into the next.

What Lands And Attractions Could Come To Disneyland And Disney California Adventure?

Millennium Falcon: Smuggler's Run exterior

The big question for anybody interested in visiting the new Disneyland Resort is just what lands and attractions will we see once work is completed. What experiences will join the best Disneyland rides ?

While nothing has been officially announced by Disney Experiences, material released by the company when DisneylandForward was first announced hints at some strong possibilities of what we might see. It’s possible that some of the newest attractions opened at other Disney Parks around the world could find homes at Disneyland Resort. For example:

Tangled & Peter Pan (Fantasy Springs)

Fantasy Springs Concept Art

In 2024 a brand new land will open at Tokyo DisneySea called Fantasy Springs . This new area includes lands dedicated to multiple animated Disney films, and it's been suggested that we could see some of the same attractions being built there at Disneyland.

World Of Frozen

Elsa animatronic at Hong Kong Disneyland

Frozen is one of the biggest franchises that Disney has, and yet, beyond being able to meet Anna and Elsa in the parks, very little connection to Frozen has been added to Disneyland. An entire World of Frozen land opened in 2023 at Hong Kong Disneyland , and a smaller version of the land is currently under construction at Disneyland Paris. This new expansion would give Imagineerers plenty of space to bring the same land to Disneyland.

Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps Animatronics

Shanghai Disneyland is home to the first land dedicated to Zootopia , but it may not be the last. Disney’s material suggests a Zootopia land like the one in Shanghai, which includes the Zootopia: Hot Pursuit trackless dark ride, could find a home here.

Toy Story Land

Buzz Lightyear statue in Toy Story Land

Pixar has a strong presence at Disneyland Resort already, with attractions at both parks, and the Pixar Pier land at Disney California Adventure, but Disney has suggested that Disneyland Resort could get its own Toy Story Land like the one that already exists at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.

Tron Lightcycle Run at Magic Kingdom

One of the biggest new additions to Walt Disney World in the last few years has been Tron: Lightcycle Run coming to Magic Kingdom . It was the second Tron coaster, following the original being built at Shanghai Disneyland. Disneyland Resort fans would likely love to get their own version of the ride closer to home. But it's also possible that Disneyland could see not just a single Tron attraction but a larger Tron area.

Could Disneyland Resort Get A Third Theme Park?

Westcot concept art

For years there have been rumors, or at the very least hopes, that we might get a third gate at Disneyland Resort, not simply a new land but an entirely new park. While no third park has been officially announced as part of the expansion, such a thing is at least possible.

While most of the expansion is connected to the current park and resort areas, one area set to be redeveloped in some way is the current Toy Story parking lot, which is located a couple of blocks away from the parks. Disney has indicated the lot could become home to some theme park elements, and if the spirit took them, the area is big enough that it could become another theme park.

With the expansion now officially given the green light, there’s a lot of work to be done. Walt Disney Imagineering will likely let us in on what they’re planning a little at a time over the next several years. It’s going to be exciting, so stay with us here as we’ll continually update this piece as we learn more about just what will be coming to Disneyland in the future.

With the city of Anaheim unanimously voting to pass DisneylandForward , the Disneyland Resort will be forever changed.

Twice in the last 69 years, Disneyland has been significantly transformed. Four years after the park opened in 1959, Disneyland added its monorail, the Matterhorn Bobsleds and a submarine ride and expanded Autopia. It was a message that would begin to fulfill Walt Disney’s promise that Disneyland would never be completed.

Huge Disneyland expansion to add new rides, restaurants and hotels wins OK

Anaheim City Council approves a plan to amend zoning rules to allow Disneyland to build new rides, hotels and stores within its existing footprint.

April 17, 2024

More than that, however, it revealed that Disneyland would continue to look to the future. Disneyland in 1959 showed its guests possibilities — a transportation system in the monorail that could remake urban communities, a tease of the freeway system that would reshape travel and a glimpse at the sort of deep-sea excursions only a lucky few could witness. The Matterhorn, while inspired by the film “Third Man on the Mountain,” also was meant to be a transportive experience, to not only bring to Disneyland a new kind of thrill ride but give visitors a taste of international adventure.

Disneyland’s second reimagining came much later. In 2001 the Walt Disney Co. would open Disney California Adventure, the Grand Californian hotel and the Downtown Disney District. These additions would attempt to make Disneyland, the company’s original park, one that could, in theory, rival Florida’s Walt Disney World by becoming a resort that could demand multiday stays.

This expansion succeeded as well, but not overnight.

A map illustrates the area around Disneyland in Anaheim

The original vision of Disney California Adventure proved to be lackluster, relying heavily on on-the-shelf rides and lacking emotion-driven experiences that take visitors out of their daily life. While the Grand Californian is a Craftsman-inspired triumph, Downtown Disney is in the midst of a transformation and is still attempting to outgrow its reputation as a home for chains and midtier eateries.

And now we’re entering a new era of possibilities, one that likely will look much different from the prior two. Modern Disney is centered on intellectual property — or IP, in corporate speak — rather than Walt-era idealism, and the most tantalizing prospects of DisneylandForward center on building around existing structures rather than erecting a new park.

With DisneylandForward, the company won the flexibility to redesign the resort. Zoning rules will be amended so that Disney can add new attractions alongside hotels on the west side of Disneyland Drive. These will, if they come to fruition, likely be extensions of Disneyland or Disney California Adventure rather than a third park. Additionally, a new shopping, dining and entertainment district can be created to the southeast on what is currently the Toy Story parking lot at Katella Avenue and Harbor Boulevard.

Company brass and the DisneylandForward materials have offered teases of what could be built. Most of these have centered on recent expansions at Disney’s international parks, such as the World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland or Zootopia at Shanghai Disney Resort. There’s been little ideological talk about the future of Disneyland, as the focus has centered squarely on popular properties and franchises rather than the resort’s status as a cultural hub and gathering space.

But DisneylandForward came with a pledge. The Walt Disney Co. has promised to spend a minimum of $1.9 billion on Disneyland attractions, lodging, entertainment, shopping and dining in the next 10 years. That money can go quickly, with modern attractions costing sometimes in the high six figures, but the Walt Disney Co. also is in the midst of doubling down on its theme parks. Disney has guaranteed to spend $60 billion over the next 10 years in its experiences division, with at least half of that total dedicated to parks and resorts, according to a recent SEC filing .

It’s safe to say that the next 10 years will shape Disneyland for decades to come. While there’s much to be revealed, there are, perhaps, some safe bets. Here are a few educated guesses as to what to expect with an expanded Disneyland in the near term.

Get ready for Pandora

DisneylandForward materials reference everything from “Tangled” to “Peter Pan” to “Tron” as possible experiences that could come to Anaheim. One word, however, is missing, and it’s one that’s been regularly referenced by Disney brass in recent weeks: “Avatar.”

Disney CEO Bob Iger mentioned it at a recent shareholder meeting, even sharing the “Avatar” concept art, which was referred to as “inspirational artwork.” Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, wrote in a blog post after the shareholder event that further news on Disneyland-related attractions such as the “Avatar” experience was tied to the approval of DisneylandForward.

“We are excited about the stories our guests could experience at Walt’s original theme park destination after approval of DisneylandForward — including the chance to experience all-new Avatar adventures with a visit to Pandora,” D’Amaro wrote . And last night in Anaheim, Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock again teased “Avatar” at the DisneylandForward hearing and vote. Finally, one of Disney’s most respected theme park creatives even posted the “Avatar” concept art on Instagram , expressing the hope of sharing more on the project in the future.

Consider a large-scale “Avatar”-inspired land all but a done deal, and the art shared for Disneyland isn’t an exact replica of Florida’s Pandora — The World of Avatar, which resides in that coast’s Animal Kingdom park. Now where to put it? Expect Pandora to be bound for Disney California Adventure. There’s been speculation that it could replace the area currently served by water ride Grizzly River Run or move into a largely vacant slot of Hollywood Land, but neither is ideal. The latter requires a rerouting of the monorail, and Grizzly River Run remains a popular attraction.

Here’s betting it’s positioned in one of the DCA expansion areas near the Pixar Place Hotel, as that would allow the company to give the James Cameron property a plethora of space, especially if Disney must hide a large show building behind an illusion of floating mountains.

Colorful renderings of potential hotel and dining space.

Expect more hotel options

With Disneyland lacking the acreage of Florida’s Walt Disney World, hotel prices in Anaheim are at a premium. Rooms for the recently revamped Pixar Place Hotel — Anaheim’s “budget” option — can routinely top $500 per night. More hotel space is needed, and if Disneyland goes all-in on “Avatar,” expect lodging and more entertainment options to follow close behind. Disney has long touted development of the Toy Story Lot as prime space for hotel, dining and entertainment modeled after Florida’s Disney Springs district.

The DisneylandForward materials mention the land as “the perfect location to cater to locals, conventioneers, hotel and Disneyland Resort guests with restaurants, hotels, live music, shopping, ticketed shows and theme park experiences.” A new proposed parking structure to the north would solve the parking issue, and Disney has done extensive research on this already, as it was part of an earlier, pre-pandemic planned development known as the “Eastern Gateway.”

Walkways to and from the new parking structure would connect the current resort to the new entertainment area. And while fans may want Disney to rapidly fill the available space with theme park attractions, if the resort is planning to increase capacity it’s first going to need a spot for those guests to park. Additionally, Iger at a recent media event said the company likely would hold back some of its theme park funds so the organization could move on the popularity of new films or franchises.

“We actually have a fairly good idea in the near term of what’s being built, but we’re purposefully not going to allocate it all,” Iger said. “Because who knows? In five years we can end up with a giant hit movie — think ‘Frozen’ — that we may want to mine essentially as an attraction, or a hotel or restaurant in our parks. So you want to maintain some flexibility.”

Arendelle, the fictional kingdom in "Frozen," at twilight.

What about ‘Frozen’s’ Arendelle? Or a ‘Coco’-themed experience?

Beyond “Avatar,” which seems a sure thing as it’s been mentioned by Iger on multiple occasions, any future aspects of DisneylandForward become pure speculation. But a couple of franchises may have higher priority than others.

Disney now has a “Frozen” attraction in Walt Disney World, a land in Hong Kong and experiences in the works for Disneyland Paris and Tokyo DisneySea. Walt Disney Imagineering, the company’s secretive arm devoted to theme park experiences, clearly has done the work on bringing “Frozen” to life in physical spaces, and it stands to reason that expansions to the original Disneyland Park, with its fairy-tale feel, would go more of a Fantasyland-inspired route.

What’s more, re-creating Arendelle in the expansion plots located near the Disneyland Hotel would give Disney the opportunity to construct a second castle, as any extensive changes to park centerpiece Sleeping Beauty Castle are prohibited due to structural limitations . The enduring popularity of “Frozen” seems relatively assured at this point, so bringing the franchise to Disneyland is far from a risk.

The unmissable addition to Disneyland’s Star Tours ride? Space whales

Star Tours has become one of Disneyland’s most versatile attractions, and its latest update nods to series such as ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘Ahsoka’ and ‘Andor.’

April 9, 2024

But if the company opts to create something unique for Southern California rather than importing Hong Kong’s World of Frozen or Shanghai’s Zootopia, one franchise that seems to be routinely brought up by executives is “Coco.” When mentioning blue-sky concepts last year year at an investor event in Florida, D’Amaro teased “Coco” as a key film that has yet to be properly explored in the Disney parks.

Potrock again mentioned “Coco” in an op-ed in the Orange County Register touting the benefits of DisneylandForward, writing that the initiative could pave the way for “the chance to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos in a ‘Coco’-themed experience.” Disney California Adventure, of course, is home to a Dia de Los Muertos celebration that does center a short “Coco” show, and the property seems especially ripe for Southern California and our heavily Latino communities. That makes it an opportunity to give Disneyland an unique land not found in other parks while also tapping into the region’s diverse fan base. Walt’s original park deserves no less as it looks ahead to closing out its first century.
