Although the cost of your flight to Cancun will vary depending on your choice of the airline as well as the period of travel, the average plane ticket to Cancun starts from USD400 . For those who prefer to be in control of their own itineraries, booking short-term car-rental services at the airport is a good idea 😍 . Although the cost of the flight is versatile, it is still one of the most important steps when planning your overall Cancun trip cost. And with all these factors considered, the final cost of a flight to Cancun will depend on individual choices like whether you choose to fly coach, business, or first class, all of which have tiered prices 🤔 . Another determining factor is the time of the year, as in whether it is high or low tourist seasons. Another factor at play here is the promo code , which can help you buy cheap flights to Cancun . It can entitle you to discounted plane tickets, thereby greatly reducing your final overall Cancun trip cost significantly 😆 .

Most top destinations in the world have culinary specialties that they are famous for, and in this regard, Cancun is no exception 🤭 . Although taco has been warmly welcomed by foodies from all over the world, those who are on vacation tend to have higher expectations of the foreign land 😬 . There are many layers of other local dishes on the menu that will excite your taste buds 😍 , from the local rendition of the tamale known as tamal torteado de pollo to the shrimp ceviche , and more delicious regional delicacies are ready to make a difference 👍 .

For those that are less inclined to try out foreign or ethnic foods, there are also some familiar options 🤣 , like McDonald's and Burger King, that are available. The average meal will cost from USD1 and onwards. Naturally, the price might go up for more high-end establishments, but the cheap and down-to-earth roadside restaurants embody the spirits and culture of the country. So whether you are looking to expand your culinary palette or searching for familiar tastes from back home, there is bound to be something that is right up your alley. And if street food meets your preference, then you will definitely want to check out Parque Las Palapas . Here, you will be able to find different food carts and stalls with a wide variety of local delicacies and specialties, including tacos and more. All food here is at a pocket-friendly price that will undoubtedly, make sure that you eat well and spend less 😍 .

Buying trinkets and mementos is a common practice when visiting a new city 🎁 . Whether it is for loved ones or friends and families, the idea of bringing back something from a trip abroad is universally appealing to travelers. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that Cancun, just like all major cities around the world 😍 , is home to a bustling souvenir industry where all sorts of items are up for grabs. Because of the high-profile nature of the city, as well as the huge numbers of tourists, the souvenir prices tend to be slightly higher, with most items ranging around USD30 , depending on where you got them 🤔 . However, it is advisable to be on the lookout for tourist scams, as some unscrupulous people are always looking to rip off tourists. Falling for a scam would cause an unnecessary and unforeseen spike in your Cancun trip cost and put a damper on the entire trip, so it's advisable to keep your guard up and use common knowledge and reason 👍 . Some of the most common souvenirs in the city include the Mexican Sombrero, Mayan jewelry, and woven baskets, among others.

And if you should be so lucky as to travel during the time of El Día de los Muerto s , which can be roughly translated into English as the Day of the Dead 😈 . The holiday is traditionally celebrated at around the end of October, or the beginning of November , and variations depends on the locality. The multi-day celebration brings the whole family and friends together to pay respects to their dearly departed. The tone of the celebrations is usually on the lighter side as a way of sharing some anecdotes of those who are resting peacefully out there.

How to go out and about while staying in Cancun?

Public Transportation in Cancun

Public Transportation in Cancun / Source: Oliver Cole@Unsplash

One of the most crucial determinants of a great trip is the ability to move around from place to place with ease 👍 . As soon as you arrive at the airport, one of the most frequent expenses would be transportation. You will have easy access to the airport shuttle as well as the option of hailing a cab. Although the shuttle requires prior booking online , it is cheaper to cut down on costs. Choosing a taxi will get you from the airport all the way to your hotel for roughly 30min depending on the whereabouts of the hotel. And if you have already booked flights on the website, then there is also a one-stop-shop experience for all customers traveling to Cancun. By entering the flight number and departure date, you have given all the cab drivers who work closely a chance to be of better help to the customers. This provides the customer with a nice beginning right off the bat.

After settling down at the hotel, I bet you could hardly wait for all the excitement ahead. Cancun is a well-known tourist attraction. The city has developed several tourist bus routes around town to cater to the visitor's satisfaction. The buses are convenient and reliable, and they are widely considered to be the cheapest way to travel to the city. So for all the first-time visitors out there, there's not a lot to fret about.

Since the buses work around the clock, with just a few minutes between each shift, the bus route pretty much covers most parts of the town. Spending a day on a bus and letting the cool air of the city flow through your fingertips will take all the troubles away.

And for those that prefer grabbing a cab to get around the town, you might need to deploy all your haggling skills as there are no regulated or fixed prices. Thus, you need to come to terms with your driver before you get in.

The city is arguably one of the most high-profile and most visited destinations in the entire country of Mexico 🥰 . And the reputation is well-deserved too. With its expansive beaches and crystal-clear waters stretching out as far as the eye can see 👀 , it is no wonder hordes of tourists scuffle to endeavor to have a taste of this paradise every year and can easily attract more than a million visitors annually 🔥 . Apart from the pristine beaches, the city also has numerous gems on offer, including the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza , which are more than 1000 years old and are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Red House Chichanchob

The El Rey Maya ruins are also laden with historical and cultural significance 👍 . The Maya museum, Urbano Kabah park , and many more sites are just a few of the many options you can visit in the city 😍 . Although some activities, visiting the beach, for example, might be free, entering sites is not free , and the amount varies depending on the sites. For Chichen Itza , visitors will have to pay USD29 as a standard fee , although there is a pricier option for a private tour, which could cost up to UDS300. For El Rey Maya ruins , the entrance cost is much lower. You will need to plan your Cancun trip cost for this purpose.

Staying in touch while in Cancun

Stay in touch even in a foreign land

Stay in touch even in a foreign land / Source: NordWood Themes@Unsplash

Whether it is for work purposes or simply to keep tabs on loved ones, being able to stay in touch with others is essential for every trip 📞 . This need or anxiety is worsened by social media. The need to always stay connected, sharing all the minute and memorable moments of our lives with close ones, gives way to the market of communication abroad. For many, a trip isn't complete without taking lots of pictures and videos, documenting every step of their adventure for posterity. And you will be thrilled to know that as soon as you land at the airport, you will be able to connect to the Wi-Fi, free of charge, to all passengers in the airport terminals.

  • However, when it comes to Internet speed and stability, you might need to turn it down a notch because the free Wi-Fi in the city is relatively slow, averaging speeds of 3mbps.
  • And in terms of cost, the average daily expenditure on Wi-Fi will range between USD10 to USD15 per day , which is a large amount of expenditure. Although you can always find the occasional free connection from a cafe or restaurant, the expense of the Internet might take up a larger proportion of the entire Cancun trip cost. And if you are a digital nomad, as you have the need for a faster and more stable connection, then it is bound to be more expensive.

👉 When it comes to cellphone service, it is highly recommended to buy a SIM card at the airport after landing, as this kind of card usually comes with pre-paid data plans and call duration. And this card can help you stay online throughout your trip.

Passport costs before traveling to Cancun

Essentials for the trip to Cancun

Essentials for the trip to Cancun / Source: Oziel Gómez@Unsplash

By now, we have established that your overall Cancun trip cost involves a number of integrated expenses that you have to be aware of and plan ahead 😭 . Some of these costs are passport-related or will include the actual cost of acquiring a passport , in case you don't already possess one. The price and procedure vary greatly since different countries have different thresholds and procedures for it too.

A fairly universal Cancun trip cost that most people will encounter is the cost of visa application to Mexico , which is mandatory if one is to enter the country 🤔 . The average cost associated with this application is USD48 , and this is paid at the Embassy of Mexico . However, there are some countries whose citizens are exempted from this rule and can therefore enter Mexico and proceed to Cancun without a visa 👍 .

This list of countries is quite substantive and includes the United States, European Union , among many others. Since the procedures and the cost of passport acquisition vary greatly from one to another, it is wise to do some research beforehand so as to be prepared 👀 . Another option is to physically visit the embassy of Mexico in your country to check the requirements needed to apply for a visa. But if your nationality is not exempted, then feel free to consult relevant professionals for the paperwork prep.

  • Accommodation : You will be spending an average of USD116 per night for the hotel room, assuming that is the accommodation you choose to settle for.
  • Food : Average USD23 a day
  • Public transportation : costs averaging USD3 daily
  • Sightseeing fees: USD11 or among other costs.
  • Tourist tax : One important cost is the tourist tax of USD12 imposed by Quintana Roo State on all travelers in the state.

👉 Although these costs will vary depending on what kind of budget you set for your travel, ranging from nomad travel all the way to luxury, these numbers represent a mid-range traveler choosing to keep their costs manageable.

Cancun trip cost for family vs. couple vs. single travel

Excursion for friends and families

Excursion for friends and families / Source: Mike Scheid@Unsplash

For a family of four, the total cost of the trip would come up to USD3,800 , although this number would increase if more people were to join the group. Another factor that would cause a spike in the trip cost would be an extension of the trip duration, meaning the longer you stay, the more expensive the trip becomes 🤔 . As already mentioned before, the quality of the trip would also determine the overall cost, with luxury trips costing more, as you would patronize more expensive hotels and restaurants 🙏 .

One advantage of family travel is that there are discounts available in many places for groups, and this may eventually bring down the overall costs. When it comes to entertainment, the prices can be prohibitive, especially for large families, with costs ranging from USD30 all the way to USD 100 per person . However, there are also special promo codes available online for special group discounts for many activities.

How to save money during your Cancun trip?

A few pointers for saving money for the trip

👉 When traveling, one of the biggest challenges is the currency exchange rates and the local currency, which in most cases might be alien to comprehend. The usual practice in such cases is to simply use their credit cards and not deal with the bustle of a foreign currency for mundane tasks like paying for food or buying souvenirs. However, it is always advisable to exchange a reasonable amount of money beforehand into the local currency, Pesos in this case, for rainy-day emergencies. It is also wise to carry some local currency whenever you go out to eat at the restaurant or pay for services like taxis, as this will also give you the option of leaving a tip based on personal preference and the services enjoyed in the establishment.

👉 Since paying with local currency gives you a chance to get lower prices when making payments, thus enabling you to cut your Cancun trip cost. In case it isn't possible to exchange money before traveling, you can simply use the ATM machines in the airport after landing to withdraw cash, and it is also advisable to research the exchange rates before the flight so as to maximize your budget.

👉 When it comes to choosing where to stay, it is best to avoid the areas with a high concentration of tourist activity as this is bound to be more expensive. One of these areas is called "the strip," and it is by the beach with all the major hotels. If you are looking for a way to save money on accommodations, it is better to look for lodging closer to the city's downtown area, as this will definitely be slightly cheaper. It is also an area that is connected to a well-organized bus system, ensuring you will only be a few minutes away from the city's center, where all the restaurants, bars, and other amenities are located.

🏨 Accommodation can be one of the biggest hurdles to navigate when trying to keep your Cancun trip cost management under check. It is therefore wise to consider choosing hostels as an alternative. Apart from the fact that they are significantly cheaper, they are also a great way to meet and mingle with new and exciting people on your trip or even get the chance to do some of the activities together and possibly share the bills.

😇 Regarding food, it is imperative that you consider cooking your own food once in a while. Fresh produce that you can buy cheaply from the local farmer's market can make a big difference. This will keep the expenses for dining out in check and control your spending while still getting to experience the city in a whole new way.

👉 Instead of paying for guided group tours of the numerous Mayan attractions around the city, you can opt for a solo tour of the sites and go around exploring on your own. This might even give you a chance to have a more detailed look at the historical sites, a much cheaper option too. This is a way to meet new people and make friends, as well as take some great pictures that will undoubtedly make friends back home jealous, all the while saving some money for the next adventure.

🚌 The city has an efficient bus system that runs 24/7 throughout the city. This eliminates the need to hail a cab or even hire a car to tour the city. Another trick to reduce your Cancun trip cost should be bookings online in advance. Since most companies and websites usually have a better deal for online bookings as opposed to last-minute in-person ones.

📆 Always check your destinations online beforehand so as to have a better bearing on the whereabouts. This also helps you to avoid crowded tourist areas that are bound to be more expensive and annoying. From September to November, this is the high season of the year. Steer clear from that time. Then the price would be much lower and much safer for foreign travelers. And before departure, double-check with the local embassy to see if the time in mind is the best time to travel there.

Tips for traveling to Cancun

  • At the airport, it is mandatory to fill out the Forma Migratoria Multiple(FMM) as this is a requirement for gaining entry into the country. This document is essential, and you need to keep it safe because you will be required to produce it upon exiting the country. In case of loss should occur, you need to apply for a new one, which would definitely delay your departure.
  • Depending on the nature of the activities that you plan to pursue, there are some items that will be essential for your trip. Be sure to pack sandals and other items that you will need at the beach, like sunscreens or other protection.

  • Ensure to book your hotel or accommodation beforehand as this will help you keep your Cancun trip cost low as well as guarantee you find a room since most hotels are fully booked during peak season. The most common and arguably safest area for tourists to live in is the hotel zone commonly referred to as the Zona Hotelera . It is also home to a vibrant nightlife scene, and you will not be short of places to visit and things to do.
  • Although the city is considered relatively safe, it is wise to take necessary precautions because, just like any other city around the world, there are risks of scams and petty crimes. Some of the measures you can take to ensure your safety are staying vigilant of your surroundings, especially at night or when you are planning to handle cash or make some payments. You should also avoid flashing expensive possessions like jewelry, cameras, and other expensive items, as these are likely to attract unwanted attention from unscrupulous individuals.

  • The city's official taxis are labeled and easy to identify, with the drivers legally obliged to display their identification inside the car. It is therefore not advisable to take a black taxi , which is any unmarked car that may try to offer you a ride for an unreasonably low offer, as this will, more often than not, end up charging an exorbitant fee.
  • Because the beaches in Cancun have an international reputation, most people are more than willing to visit there at least once a year. It is, therefore, important to be familiar with the flag system used at the beach, which is used to indicate the water conditions, as well as the tide level, and will be helpful for you to know when it is safe to enter the water and when to stay out to avoid accidents.
  • Another way to manage your Cancun trip cost is to make sure you get a tax refund at the airport in case of impulsive shopping should occur on your trip. This is a new program launched by the city to attract more visitors and spur consumption, and it entitles every visitor who has spent more than USD65 in one place to some tax returns. Make sure that you've kept all your receipts, as they will be required to present by the tax office at the airport before issuing the tax returns.

  • Many travelers from North America and Europe are used to drinking water directly from the taps and faucets. However, this is not advised in Cancun as the water is deemed unsafe, especially for non-locals who are at high risk of falling sick. Instead, it is advisable to stick to bottled water, which is readily available throughout the city, where you can also use that water to brush your teeth. Also, try to avoid icy drinks that are commonly sold on the streets, as these are also likely to be made from tap water.

Travel Cost Cancun: Overview

Travel Cost Cancun: Overview

Airfare and Flight Costs

Ready to jet off to paradise?

Let’s talk about flights.

The cost of your flight to Cancun will depend on various factors, like your choice of airline and the travel period.

In general, you can expect the average plane ticket to Cancun to start at around $300.

To snag the best deals, keep an eye out for discounts and promos and consider booking during cheaper travel seasons.

Accommodation and Hotels

Now, let’s dive into accommodations.

As you know, Cancun is famous for its Hotel Zone, a beach-filled paradise brimming with resorts.

But don’t forget about Downtown as another destination with great options, especially for budget-conscious travelers.

Here’s a roundup of what you can expect on accommodations in Hotel Zone and Downtown:

Downtown, you can book hostel dorm rooms starting at around 280 MXN.

Private hostel rooms for two are also available from 1,000-1,500 MXN.

Depending on your choice of accommodation and activities, a seven-day adventure for a family of four can range between $2,752 – $5,420,

Don’t forget to factor in transportation when making your decision.

Transportation Within Cancun

Public transportation.

Now, what’s the most budget-friendly and efficient way to get around Cancun?

In Cancun, you’ll primarily rely on city buses, which run frequently day and night.

A one-way bus fare typically costs around MXN 12 (USD 0.60).

Some buses even offer free Wi-Fi.

Hop on the R-1, R-2, or R-27 bus routes to reach most tourist destinations.

If you’re heading to nearby towns for a day trip , catch a bus at the intersection of Avenida Tulum and Uxmal in downtown Cancun.

Destinations like Tulum and the famed Chichen Itza are easily accessible from here.

Just remember to carry Mexican Peso and keep your bus tickets as you can use them for discounts at local stores.

Car Rentals

Renting a car can allow you to explore Cancun and its surroundings at your own pace.

Keep in mind, however, that you must have insurance and a valid driver’s license.

Additionally, be prepared for some crazy driving conditions and different road rules that you may be used to.

To avoid unpleasant surprises, scrutinize your rental agreement and ensure you clearly understand the costs involved.

Taxis

While taxis are a convenient and quick way to get around Cancun, they can be more expensive than other modes of transport.

Short taxi rides within the downtown area can cost between MXN 50-70, with fares significantly increasing for longer distances.

To keep your budget in check, always negotiate and agree on a taxi fare before starting your journey.

If you need a transfer from the airport, consider booking a private service in advance to avoid hassle and inflated prices.

Food and Dining

Restaurants and nightlife.

Cancun is known for its food scene and exciting nightlife.

You can find the perfect meal for any taste, from traditional Mexican cuisine to international flavors.

For breakfast, enjoy local fares, like chilaquiles or fresh fruit.

And for lunch and dinner, you can’t go wrong with local fish dishes, like ceviche or fish tacos.

Also, Cancun’s nightlife draws in many visitors.

The city has no shortage of night establishments offering delicious food, unique cocktails, and lively entertainment.

Most restaurants also offer a full bar with a wide selection of alcohol, ranging from tequila and mezcal to your favorite international spirits.

Tips for Eating on a Budget

If you’re looking to save some coins during your Cancun getaway, here are a few tips to keep your wallet full while still enjoying local culinary delights:

  • Skip the hotel restaurant : Hotel restaurants often come with a heftier price tag, so venture out and explore the city to find more affordable options.
  • Visit local markets : Stock up on fruits, veggies, and snacks by shopping at local markets, where you’ll likely find lower prices and regional specialties.
  • Opt for street food : Often, you can find the most delicious and authentic meals at street food stalls. Don’t be afraid to try new things and ask the locals for recommendations.
  • Share dishes : Restaurant portions can be pretty generous, so consider sharing a meal with your travel buddy to cut costs and sample a wider variety of flavors.
  • Take advantage of happy hours : Watch out for happy hour promotions at bars and clubs to score discounted drinks and appetizers.
  • Embrace the local tea culture : If you need an afternoon pick-me-up, opt for a cup of tea at a local café. It’s typically more affordable than other beverage options and offers a taste of the regional tea culture.

One tip I’ve found personally helpful is to be open and friendly with restaurant staff and other diners.

It has led me to valuable recommendations and a more enjoyable dining experience during my stay in the city.

Weather and Best Time to Travel

Peak season.

Peak Season

Cancun’s weather is synonymous with sun, warm temperatures, and beautiful beaches .

But, as you may know, the weather can differ depending on the time of year.

Visiting between December and April is generally considered the best time to enjoy Cancun’s near-perfect weather .

This peak season means heavier crowds, but you’ll find some great travel deals and minimal rainfall.

Plus, temperatures during this period are comfortable, averaging between 75 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

While peak season guarantees fantastic weather, you might want to consider traveling during the low season from May to June or September to November .

Hot temperatures and occasional rain showers may deter some travelers during these months.

But there’s a silver lining.

You will find huge discounts on hotels , tours, and even cover charges.

Plus, most days are still sunny and beautiful.

Hurricane Season

But wait, let’s not forget about hurricane season .

Usually, hurricane season in Cancun occurs from June to November .

Keep a close eye on the forecast and heed hurricane warnings if you plan a trip during this period.

Otherwise, you might have an experience like this one.

My sister and I visited Cancun once during the hurricane season.

We knew it was a risky time, but we also knew it was a great opportunity to score some fantastic deals.

Our trip started amazingly with bright and sunny weather, a literal calm before the storm.

Feeling cheerful that we had hit the jackpot, we decided to go shopping at the La Isla Shopping Village.

Guess what happened next?

Along the way, we got caught in a crazy downpour.

The funny thing is it stopped a few minutes later, the sun peeking out as if it had never rained at all.

We made it to the village, soaking wet under the bright sky.

Everyone was so nice, pretending not to notice our wet look as we shopped.

The legendary Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, once said, “Timing is everything, especially when it comes to the weather.”

So, to avoid potential inconveniences, it’s crucial to consider the different weather patterns and plan accordingly.

Additional Expenses and Budgeting

Activities and tours.

Underwater Museum

Cancun offers a plethora of exciting activities and tours for you to experience.

Some popular options include snorkeling tours of the Underwater Museum, which cost around 965 MXN, and visiting the ancient Mayan ruins at Tulum.

Note that prices for other attractions and entertainment, such as water activities, can add up quickly.

However, you don’t need to spend a fortune to have a great time.

When budgeting for your trip, factor in approximately M$2,469 ($140) per day for daily expenses, including dining and local transportation.

Here’s a quick breakdown of standard costs on average:

  • Meals: M$477 ($27) per day
  • Local transportation: M$296 ($17) per day
  • Hotel: M$3,261 ($185) per night for a couple,

Souvenirs and Shopping

Who doesn’t love bringing home unique souvenirs from their travels?

Shopping in Cancun can range from affordable finds to more upscale offerings.

To stick to your budget, consider browsing local markets for artisanal crafts, such as ceramics, textiles, and handmade jewelry.

These items typically have a more authentic feel and can be more affordable than shopping at high-end stores or resorts.

It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the current exchange rate of Mexican Peso .

This familiarity will help you understand pricing and budget accordingly during your stay.

It’s best to carry some cash in the local currency when making purchases, as some smaller shops might not accept credit cards.

However, larger establishments likely will, so having a mix of payment options is advisable.

Saving Tips and Tricks

A fabulous Cancun vacation doesn’t have to break the bank.

To get the most out of your trip while keeping costs down, here are some insider tips for you:

  • Book early and be flexible with dates. The earlier you book, the better your chance of finding great deals. Also, try to avoid peak season and weekends when prices tend to be higher.
  • Travel in groups. Many vacation packages or accommodation options offer discounts for larger groups.
  • Keep an eye out for special promotions. Signing up for newsletters and following travel agencies on social media can alert you to limited-time offers.
  • Consider accommodations besides hotels. Airbnb and vacation rentals can be more budget-friendly options.

With these insider-saving tips, your dream Cancun vacation is just a few clicks away.

How Much Does It Cost To Go To Cancun On A Family Vacation?

posted by James Brockbank on January 11, 2022 // last updated on January 11, 2022

So you and your family have decided that it is time to kick back and enjoy the sun. You have all finally agreed on a location for your trip, but there is just one detail that needs to be panned.

Cost.

The cost of a family vacation can certainly vary from location to location; however, in this article, we will be discussing precisely how much a family vacation to Cancun will cost. We will go over: overall cost, flight prices, hotel prices, food prices, and entertainment prices.

How Many People Will be Going on the Trip?

Do i want luxury or do i want affordability , airport location, hotel prices , food prices, some of the best family-friendly attractions: , conclusion .

trip cost cancun

Overall cost

Depending on how big your family is and how luxurious you want your vacation to be, the overall cost can range from about $1100 for an individual traveler, $2,000 for a couple, and $3800 for a family of four. With that being said, there are some additional costs you may want to consider when you are looking at the overall price point.

If you have a certain number of family members going on the trip, there are some deals that you can take advantage of, such as group discounts. Another thing that you will want to keep in mind is the duration of the trip.

Generally, the longer that you stay at a resort or in a general location, the cheaper the prices will be due to discounted rates of room fees. By keeping in mind the number of family members that will be coming on the trip, you can save big and perhaps invite even more family!

trip cost cancun

Flight Prices

The price of your flight should be your number one concern. Flights are generally the most expensive part of any trip; however, if you are taking a trip and want to know how much it will cost to go on a family vacation to Cancun, you need to plan early when you are looking for a family vacation for flights. There are two questions that you will want to ask yourself when it comes to finding your perfect flight and price.

Check out our guide to the best flight booking sites to find the best prices.

If you want to escape the cramped atmosphere of an economy flight, then you will want to opt for a first-class or business class seat.

The price can range from $200 to $400 for a solo traveler. The price of a Business Class flight ticket to Cancun also varies considerably based on its origin. From Los Angeles, the cost generally starts at $300, whereas Business Class travelers from New York pay around $250 for one person.

So, multiply that number by the number of family members you have, and you are now done with the first and most vital step. Remember, you are going on vacation to relax, so it’s always okay to treat yourself.

Here are some things to keep in mind for your flight to Cancun:

  • For you to access a special business lounge, you need to fly business class and arrive at the Cancun International Airport.
  • For you to get quick security checks and speedy check-ins and make sure you and your family depart in time, you should select business class flights to Cancun. The airline doesn’t influence these privilages.
  • Certain airlines have chef-like meal packages that allow their passengers to dine on quality beverages like wine and several healthy and delicious foods.

However, if you don’t mind having a seat near to another person that may not be a part of your family, then an economy seat will be just fine. The typical range from an economy seat is around $80 -$150 one way per person. This option is best if you are not so picky about your flight because you know that the flight is just a tiny portion of your entire trip.

Location, location, location! It is also important to note that where you fly out from can also play a significant role in the cost of your flight. If you are flying out from a bigger, more well-known airport, chances are the flight prices may be much cheaper than if you are flying out from a smaller, less populated airport. Some of the best airports to fly to Cancun from the United States are:

  • Aeromexico

All three of these airports out of Atlanta allow you to have a direct flight from Atlanta to Cancun for about $400 and a 3-hour ride. Although this might not be as feasible for those who are on a tight budget, if you value your time over money, then flying from these airports would be a great start to your vacation.

As long as you and your family pay close attention to where you are flying from and how you want to fly, finding a price that fits your pockets, as well as your desires, will be easy!

trip cost cancun

Just as crucial as your flight costs are going to be the hotel cost. When you go on vacation, the whole point is to escape your day-to-day life and relax. So, you want to ensure that you are looking into the type of hotel that you are getting to maximize your savings as well as your experience.

If you have never traveled to Cancun before, a good rule of thumb is to aim for at least a 3-star or higher-rated hotel. This way, you know that you will be getting a quality experience at an affordable price. The average cost of a 4-star hotel is around $39. However, the costs can range anywhere between $25 all the way up to $800.

This option would be best for smaller families. If you are traveling with a smaller family, you will find a hotel as one of the best options because you will not have to worry about ensuring everyone has their own bathroom as well as their own space.

You also will not have the hassle of cooking meals because many of the hotels in Cancun offer an all-inclusive service which may be beneficial to saving some significant cash for you and your family. Some of the best hotels in Cancun are:

  • The Ritz Carlton, Cancun
  • Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun
  • Hyatt Zilara Cancun
  • The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resorts Villa and Spa

Another option would be for your family to stick to Airbnb. This option works best for larger families as the savings are incredibly maximized.

By renting an Airbnb for your vacation, your family has the opportunity to live as normally as possible. By this we mean, there will be enough room for the kids to roam around and make as much noise as they want without fear of interrupting the roommates next door.

Also, by renting an Airbnb, you and your family will have the luxury of having your own rooms and, in some cases, your own bathrooms. The average cost of renting an Airbnb in Cancun ranges from $50 all the way up to $300 plus per night.

Another perk of renting an Airbnb is that you also have an option to cook at home, which will maximize your savings even more than going out for every meal each day that you are there.

It would be best if you took some precautions when considering renting out an Airbnb for your trip to Cancun.

Firstly, you will want to do your due diligence and get the reviews on the neighborhood that you will be staying in. If possible, you will also want to find reviews from prior travelers about the specific Airbnb that you will be staying in. Secondly, you will also want to look at any recent crime reports in the area to ensure the space you will be staying in will be safe for your entire family.

Everyone knows that food is one of the best reasons to vacation. You get to live guilt-free for the time being and indulge yourself in all that Cancun has to offer. With that being said, the cost of food has an extensive range. You will want to keep in mind the time of day that you are eating as breakfast is undoubtedly the least expensive meal as opposed to lunch and dinner.

If you and your family are planning a more upscale dining experience, then the cost of food per person can range from $45-$100 for restaurants such as Ruths Chris.

An upscale dining experience would include 4-5 star restaurants every day for every meal. Considering the quality of an upscale restaurant, this obviously would be the most expensive option. However, a vacation is a time to enjoy your experience in every sense of the meaning.

On the other hand, some families may opt for a cheaper dining experience that consists of more local foods and foods that are quick and can be prepared at home. If this is the case, then the average range of food would be about $1 to $5.

In Cancun, it is effortless to get cheap, delicious food. Most cheap eats come from street vendors and are generally Mexican-inspired dishes such as tacos. When you purchase from a smaller owned restaurant, not only are you getting a valuable meal, you’re also supporting the local small businesses.

According to recent travelers on Yelp, some of the best locations for delicious food on a budget in Cancun are:

  • Marquesitas
  • La Birria De San Angel
  • El Polilla
  • Bazar Manos Magicas
  • El Elote Feliz
  • Fred’s House
  • Taqueria Bilis Cochinita y Lechón
  • Los Konittos

Whichever style of dining you choose, your family will be sure to have a blast.

Entertainment Prices

There are so many things to do in Cancun ranging from snorkeling to boating, to all-inclusive tours, to underground tours. The options are truly endless.

With any of the attractions, they come with inclusive lunches or dinners. All of these activities are family-friendly and have been vetted by prior travelers. However, the cost of these attractions just may make you think twice. The average price of entertainment in Cancun is anywhere from $30 per person to $100 per person.

These costs are broken down by many factors such as:

  • Group size ( as we said earlier, the cost can decrease significantly if a more prominent group size purchases tickets).
  • How many attractions do you and your family want to experience in general?
  • How many attractions do you and your family want to share per day?

When it comes to determining the cost of entertainment, the questions above can help pinpoint how much you should budget for. If you and your family want to experience multiple attractions. In many cases, there will be attraction vouchers that you can purchase that will be cheaper than if you were to buy the vouchers for these attractions individually.

  • Xcaret Park
  • Tulum Xtreme: Ruins, Cenote, Rappel, and Ziplines with lunch.
  • Puerto Morelos Reef Snorkeling tour with lunch.
  • Jolly Roger Dinner Show and Private Cruise.
  • Jungle Speedboat Tour and Snorkeling.

Cancun Prices & Travel Costs

Cancun has exploded in popularity in the recent decade, and it’s now among the most popular winter-travel destinations in the world. It didn’t even exist until the early 1970s, and now it’s lined with hotels and very crowded in season. In fact, the greater Cancun area consists of the Hotel Zone, downtown, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and more. Here is our guide for where to stay in the Cancun area for your own style .

Travel Costs to Cancun

Accommodation costs in cancun.

While Cancun is definitely cheaper than cities like Los Angeles or Miami, it’s not really the bargain that many people are hoping for. The nicer hotels charge prices that aren’t too far from similar hotels in Hawaii, and hotels lower down the quality range can be disappointing. On the other hand, you can get excellent rates at many of the all-inclusive hotels, especially in the low season, but even during peak periods if you book early enough.

Cancun Hotel Seasons

Hotels in Cancun are at their peak in price and activity during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday weeks, as well as during the Easter vacation weeks in late March and April. The rest of the period from December through April is considered the high season, so starting in May bargains can be had, and during summer you can often get great deals at some of the nicer hotels.

Cancun Hotel Prices

Most people who come to Cancun are happy to relax on the beach or at the resort pool during the day, but there are plenty of other options for those with the energy.

Visit a cenote for photogenic swimming

The most unique and Cancun-specific thing to do is visit a Cenote (si-NO-tay), which is a sea cave with an opening in its roof. There are dozens of these places close to Cancun and you’ll hear about options once you arrive. Some are cheap to enter and others are part of large nature parks that can also include food and drinks for one price.

Visit some famous ruins

Tulum has a relatively small and popular group of ruins just outside of town and perched along the beach. You can visit on a tour or even by public bus.

Chichen Itza ‘s ruins are much larger and more famous, but also much farther away. You’ll recognize the photo of the pyramid at the heart of the complex. They are about 3 hours from Cancun by bus, and it’s easy to book a tour that takes you there and another few stops as well.

Visit a local island

Cozumel is a large island directly across the straight from Playa del Carmen, and Isla de Mujeres is a smaller island across from the Cancun Hotel Zone. In both cases you can book a ferry or a tour that can also include other things such as fishing or sailing.

Best tours in Cancun

All of the things mentioned in our Things To Do section are also popular with tours. Your hotel will probably have a tour desk that offers dozens of options, usually with pick-up directly from your hotel.

The Tulum Ruins are about 90 minutes south of Cancun’s Hotel Zone and only about 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen.

Tours going to the islands of either Cozumel or Isla de Mujeres are popular as all-day excursions. They can include boat transportation as well as fishing or sailing or all food and drinks, and many also include a beach stay on the island for a few hours.

Many ground tours of the area will stop at one or more cenotes, often for a swimming session of an hour or two. Do yourself a favor and visit at least one of these gorgeous sea caves to see what all the fuss is about.

Cancun Food and Drink Prices

Almost everyone visiting Cancun will be spending most (or all) of their time at a large resort on the beach, and those places are fairly expensive. You can find some more affordable food and drinks in the small town area around the corner of the hotel zone. Prices are lower in the city of Cancun itself, although there isn’t much to see or do there so it probably isn’t worth it for most visitors.

Cancun has extremely pleasant weather for most of the period from November through March, although it can rain in downpours at almost any time of year. The rainy season runs from May through October, though summers aren’t nearly as rainy as many other tropical places. Ocean breezes keep things nice most of the time, though expect fairly high humidity even during the dry months.

Important tips to enjoy much more your trip to Cancun

Now that we have given you all the tips about how much does a trip to Cancun cost, here are some more suggestions that will make your trip even better. Cancun is a big city and its tourist spots and beaches are concentrated in some regions, so being well located makes all the difference. If you haven’t already booked your hotel, be sure to check out our article Where to stay in Cancun , with tips from the best regions and also how to get a great hotel at a great price (and find all inclusive hotels and resorts on sale).

Another good tip is that many people think it is not worthwhile to rent a car in Cancun, but it all depends on how your trip will be. If you are staying at the hotel every day, it really is not worth it. But, if you are going on tours, want to go to shopping malls and tourist spots, they are all a little bit apart and the car is great for getting around.

Even in the hotel zone that has everything there, the distance between the points is great, and without the car you need to take a taxi or public bus. With the car, you have more comfort and freedom, not to mention the economy, because with the value of the transport that you will spend from the airport to the hotel and vice versa, you have already paid the rent of a car for almost 5 days. If you want to know all the tips on the subject and how to get incredible prices, see our full article about how to rent a car in Cancun .

Sargassum/Seaweed Advisory

Sargassum is a free-floating seaweed that is especially prolific in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. While beneficial to ocean life, these large free-floating seaweed mats often wash up on beaches. The amount of seaweed on the beaches fluctuates based on the time of year and ocean currents. While resorts do their best to maintain the beaches for their guests, you may experience some inconvenience during your stay.

1. Pay in Mexican pesos

The Mexican peso (MXN) is the official currency of Mexico, and it’s been that way since 1993. Using pesos while you’re in Cancun is the best exchange rate possible.

Chances are the places where you’ll be spending your money will have high exchange rates if you leave it up to them.

With that in mind, we recommend paying for goods and services in Mexican pesos. At the end of the day, you’ll get more bang for your buck if you use the same currency the locals do.

But this does mean that you need to get cash beforehand to make purchases.

2. Don’t get pesos at the airport

One simple mistake that could put a serious dent in your budget is getting pesos at the airport. Next to your hotel, the Cancun airport is probably the most expensive place to get your money exchanged.

The airport often offers inflated rates and charges high fees to exchange your natural currency for pesos. Try exchanging at a bank, via an ATM machine (pending your bank has an OK rate), or at an actual private currency exchange.

I recommend you don’t take money out using your credit card, as it’s the equivalent of getting a cash advance… which can get pretty pricey.

3. Stay downtown

Cancun’s Hotel Zone can get REALLY pricey. It’s the city’s main strip featuring all-inclusive 5-star resorts. And while there are cheaper options within the zone (particularly if you look for lagoon-facing joints), if you want to save more, I recommend checking out downtown Cancun.

The town center has bars, restaurants, and tourist hot spots. Plus it’s only a 15-minute (inexpensive) bus ride from the white sandy beaches of the Hotel Zone.

Cancun beach and hotel

4. Stay in a hostel or a cheap hotel

If budget is a BIG consideration for you, you might want to consider a cheap hotel or hostel. While these don’t offer the same amenities as your average 5-star all-inclusive, they do give you an opportunity to save money that you can spend elsewhere along your travels.

Hostels tend to be the cheapest option if you’re willing to use shared accommodations, communal bathrooms, and kitchens.

This is NOT the type of travel that works for everyone, but it does work for some travelers.

That said, if hostels aren’t your jam there are plenty of other options. You can simply look for cheaper hotel options if you need a little more privacy, particularly if you move away from the Hotel Zone when you look to book.

5. Travel in the low season

The best time to visit Cancun is between September to November, and towards the end of April . These months tend to be slower because of hurricane season .

There are usually fewer tourists because the weather isn’t quite as nice (it’s still pretty nice!).

During these months, you’re more likely to find discounted hotel and tour packages. Of course, it’s not guaranteed that you’re going to save.

But most people that travel to Cancun during this time have a chance to spend less money and avoid crowds.

6. Book your hotels and tours in advance

Before setting out on your vacation, it is important to plan ahead and book hotels and tours in advance. Doing so ensures that you are getting the best deals available.

Not sure where to book? Here are a few less expensive places to stay in Cancun:

👉🏽 Selina Hotel Zone

Selina Cancun Laguna Hotel Zone

Selina is a hostel in the Hotel Zone is the perfect place for those looking for an inexpensive, convenient, and enjoyable stay.

There’s no curfew (but there is a quiet time), and you have the opportunity to participate in a range of wellness activities including morning yoga and meditation sessions.

They have both private accommodations and shared dormitories, so no matter your preference there’s something for you to enjoy.

Just keep in mind that the private rooms get pricier than the average hotel. So if you don´t like dorm rooms, you may want to check out another hotel option less trendy but cheaper.

👉🏽 Sina Suites

Suites Sina Cancún

This quiet and affordable lagoon-facing property is sure to please. It offers an outdoor pool, rooftop sun deck, and private marina.

There are suites with 2 bedrooms, kitchenettes, and full kitchens, and some have balconies. It’s a great join that’s perfect for budget travelers.

👉🏽 Oasis Palm

Oasis Palm hotel

If you want the all-inclusive Cancun experience, Oasis Palm is a moderately priced choice. It’s only 20 minutes from the airport, caters perfectly to families with their kids´ club, and features amenities like complimentary non-motorized sports.

A word of warning, this isn’t as cheap as some budget picks but it’s still cheaper than many of the other choices that the area offers.

7. Find a cheap restaurant to eat at

Cancun has every type of restaurant that you’d want from floating romantic dinners on Spanish galleons to cheap taco-filled eats.

Or you can save even more by opting for street food. If you’re focused on saving money, these are my favorite cheap picks:

  • Mumma Rooftap Bar : Has beautiful rooftop seating with nice views, and a pool. You’ll find great Mexican pub food here
  • Dons Tacos & Burritos : This is a fun sports bar where you can eat cheap food on the beach with a gorgeous ocean view.
  • Casa Bea : Home to delicious Mexican seafood with good flavor.

Otherwise, you can always rent an apartment, which is usually cheaper, and go grocery shopping, which is definitely a way to save some bucks on food. }

Chedraui, Soriana, and Walmart are the cheapest supermarkets and there are different ones scattered around downtown.

If you see Chedraui Selecto or Superama, those are the fancy brands of the above-mentioned Supermarkets and are more expensive.

8. Visit the Mayan ruins on your own

Chichen Itza Mexico

The Mayan ruins are a gorgeous site to see, but booking a whole tour can get kind of pricey. If you’re looking to save money, I recommend making your own way there.

You can take public transit and simply pay the entrance fee yourself. You get the historic experience without all that cost.

However, there are some tours that will help you save time and money, like this inclusive Chichen Itza tour for only 45 USD, which is really convenient, all things considered.

When you book a tour, in general, make sure you read what is included in the price and the cancellation policy, in case you have a change of plan.

Also getting travel insurance will help you get a refund in case you have to cancel your travels.

9. Go to public beaches

You can go to Cancun and experience the beaches without paying all-inclusive resort prices (or purchasing a full-day pass ).

If you’re trying to save coins, head to one of Cancun’s beautiful public beaches.

You’ll have to bring your own towel and refreshments, but it’ll be worth it.

Forum beach Cancun

10. Do your own research or carry a guidebook

Every tour looks amazing when you’re excited to explore, so save money by doing your own research beforehand.

Carefully select tours that you actually want to do, chances are they’re not all right for you.

11. Use the ADO public bus or colectivos to move around

One of the cheapest ways to move around Cancun is by using the ADO bus and public colectivos. While private cars are luxurious and comfortable, the costs add up.

Comparatively, public transit is a fraction of the average cost — mere pesos. But if you’re going to use them, make sure you carry small bills and coins because there isn’t a lot of opportunity to break big bills up.

For example, one of the things you want to visit near Cancun is the refreshing cenotes . However, getting there by public transportation is impossible for some of them.

If you don´t feel like driving in Cancun , you can always find affordable tours to take you there.

Among the cenotes that you can visit by public transportation, are Cenote Azul , Cenote Cristalino , and Cenote Eden, Cenote Dos Ojos , which are right on the main road near Playa del Carmen and the local colectivo can drop you off there.

12. Visit Isla Mujeres on your own

Isla Mujeres aerial view

Isla Mujeres is a gorgeous place, but tours can be pretty expensive. This island has beautiful beaches and is a great place to enjoy what Mexico has to offer.

The good news is that if you want to explore it, the ferry only costs around 130 pesos and runs every 30 minutes between 5 am and 9:30 pm.

There’s no reason why you need to pay a big tour ticket to get there.

You can get to the ferry by local bus or if you get a taxi from downtown is not going to cost you more than 50 MXN.

Once you get to Isla Mujeres you can walk around the pretty town and walk all the way to Playa Norte, the most beautiful beach and spend the day there.

Or if you have the budget you can rent a golf cart for a couple of hours (you will need your driving license) and drive all the way to Punta Sur and visit the statues of the Mayan Goddes Ixel and other beautiful artworks, and check out some beaches along the coast.

13. Book your hotel shuttle in advance

Chances are you don’t want to take public transit while you cart along your bags from the airport (though you can if you want).

If you want the convenience of the shuttle but want to cut costs a bit, book your return shuttle in advance. This will help you secure a discount.

14. Buy food at the local supermarket

Shopping at the supermarket or stands is the best way to get fresh ingredients or ready-to-eat meals without resort prices.

Remember to pay in cash to get the best deal all around.

15. Look for Cheap tours from Cancun (and book online)

You can take tours for cheap if you plan them correctly. These are the tours you should check out — book them online to save the most money:

Is Cancun expensive FAQ

Cancun forum beach

Is Cancun or Hawaii cheaper?

Between Cancun and Hawaii , generally speaking, Cancun is the cheaper destination. However, you can take a luxury trip there too, if you want to.

Is Cancun or Cabo Cheaper?

Cabo is usually considered to be a more expensive trip than Cancun — but you can save or spend more on a trip to either destination.

That said, you can save additional money in Cancun by avoiding all-inclusive resorts in the Hotel Zone.

Is Cancun or Isla Mujeres cheaper?

Isla Mujeres tends to be a more laid-back and tranquil destination. However, it has similar pricing to Cancun — which is cheaper really depending on where exactly you’re staying.

Having said that, differently from Cancun in Isla Mujeres you can find cheaper accommodation that is near the beach because it´s a small island.

So probably it could be a better choice than Cancun if you are traveling on a budget and you want to be near the water.

Is Cancun or Tulum cheaper?

Tulum is considered to be more expensive than Cancun, but it depends on your vacation planning choices, as usual. You can always stay in Cancun and go to Tulum on a day trip .

Cancun palm trees and beach

Why is Cancun so expensive right now?

Post-pandemic people want to get out of their houses. Cancun has traditionally been known as a budget destination, which makes it an ideal place for people to go.

Cancun was the ultimate budget-friendly Mexican destination prior to the pandemic. It has accessible flights, affordable hotels, great food, and all-around breathtaking beauty. Post-pandemic, people have been excited to get out and enjoy travel again — meaning traditionally affordable destinations, like Cancun, have skyrocketed in price to accommodate the influx of tourists.

Are 3 days enough in Cancun?

If you only have 3 days in Cancun, you can make it work — but you’ll have to be selective about what you choose to do. That said, most people tend to head to Cancun for 7 to 10 days. You can check out my Cancun Itinerary to help you plan your own trip to Cancun. I am sure you can find a lot of ideas for 3 to 7 days trips.

However, if you are planning in advance you can find amazing deals even during spring break time. If you are thinking about traveling to Cancun in this time of the year you can check out these top all-inclusive hotels for spring break hand-picked for you

What month is the cheapest to go to Cancun?

Which is cheaper, Cancun or Jamaica?

Cancun tends to be cheaper due to the budget flights and accommodations. But if you book the right trip, Jamaica can be affordable too. You can read more about Cancun vs Jamaica in my dedicated post.

How much money should I bring to Cancun?

The amount of money you bring to Cancun depends on what you plan on doing and what kind of traveler you are. Typically, I recommend $50 a day for budget trips and $100 for nicer trips.

However, it is worth pointing out that it depends on whether or not you’re going to an all-inclusive resort too.

Can you swim in the ocean in Cancun?

Technically, you swim in the Caribbean Sea when you’re in Cancun. But yes you can swim easily as there are many beaches with very accessible water. Just make sure the flag is green or yellow and pay attention to the undertow currents.

There are many beaches in Cancun where the water is very calm and there are never dangerous currents, such as Playa Ancha near Presidente Intercontinental Hotel, Playa Langosta, or by hotel Fiesta Americana, Hyatt Ziva, and Hotel Crystal Altitude. Those are my favorite spots for swimming.

Is Cancun Expensive? Final Thoughts

I hope this post helped you figure out how much vacation in Cancun can cost. As you can see there are many ways to travel, depending on your budget. If you want to save some bucks you can do that, but also, if you want to have a luxury holiday you can do that too. It´s always up to you.

Top 5 airlines flying to cancún.

Great. Loved that there was WiFi on flight to keep in touch and excellent service of beverages and snacks.

Business class is great. New airplane, very comfortable, better than some of the major airlines I am used to

Terrible. Flight was cancelled due to the weather in the east and sout east(florida). Did not get any compesation of any kind. According to them, it was not under their control so I lost all the money paid for the 2 fairs from Raleigh, NC to Orlando, Fl.

great flight. Pilot was communicative, flight attendants were excellent. Really nice experience except my tv didn’t work.

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

at the time for boarding the lady just call Group A and no other goups and everybody from A to F go inside without the right turn, and when we get in theres no more spsce for carry on , the ones that get in at not correct group from the back occupy our space !!!!! a mess !!!!

There were multiple delays but JetBlue tried to make the boarding and departure process as quick and efficient as possible. The crew was as detached from reality as could be, meaning: not very friendly and just doing things by the numbers.

I had back trouble prior to my flight and everyone was great about helping me.

Jetblue needs to improve on Onboarding as it seems to always be behind on departing. It never leaves on time. I would recommend to have an earlier Onboarding in order to leave on time and respect your customers time as well.

40 minute delay before take off after boarding flight. Bright lights throughout night flight due Issues with light panels. In flight Entertainment nonfunctional

Nothing beats ANA customer service on my opinion. Maybe because of their Japanese culture (and food). Arigatō

So so. Terrible aircraft choice for that leg of the flight.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

Hated every minute of it. This flight should have only taken 1.5hrs but was delayed over 10hours. Now I am being told I cannot be compensated or refunded my ticket price or extra leg room, which I purchased but did not receive, because the airline is throwing the blame on the 3rd party I purchased tickets through and 3rd party putting the blame on airline. No one wants to help. They received their money and that's all they care about. Im going on 3 days of still trying to get to my final destination, had to cancel car rental, car insurance and hotel. Currently staying in airport until hotels open up. Thank you Lufthansa, Kayak, Underpricer and United for making this trip the worst ever.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Just get Economy Plus for international flights, so worth it the extra room, bigger seats…

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

It was spectacular. I had basic Economy and was given so much space and their seats lean back so far. Staff was superb, food was superb, everything was superb, Finnair is Fantastic.

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Not much seat room, but that was unexpected. But the seat headrest was very uncomfortable.

First the good, everyone was friendly and efficient. Flight was smooth and plane was very clean and new. Now the bad, seats have almost no padding on your behind. I was in exit row so I had tons of leg room for a 6' 2" bean pole with long legs. Everything was extra - water, soda, snacks everything besides oxygen. Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries.

Ya get what you pay for, and my flight was cheap as you could ever want it, so no worries. They dont really bother you about carry-on size, I brought a descent sized backpack and they didnt even check.

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

Seats suck, not enough room, overcrowded planes, hectic situation all together.

Pretty good. Would’ve been excellent if we would have left on time and the crew wasn’t late.

I do not like the customer service, I had an emergency and needed to cancel a pet reservation right after I had booked it and they would not do anything but issue a credit. I haven't flown in years as I have 7 kids and don't have spare time. I want my $125 back on my card please

Spirit airline tries to screw you at every opportunity. Spirit wanted 65$ for an extra pound in the suitcase Made me open the suitcase at the counter to remove 1 pound. Staff very cold and rude Will never fly spirit again and will recommend same to family and friends

Delayed..4 times...completely disorganized boarding. After 5 hours they scrambled to move ppl off plane bc they overbooked. Then they didn't have a cabin crew. WiFi on plane didn't work. Zero amenities. Once we boarded we sat on tarmac for an hour. Explore all alternate options including purchasing a pair of hiking boots and walking to your destination instead of flying spirit.

what I like about Spirit is that the pilot and crew are good communicators. The plane itself - well, its a budget airline and you get what is expected, But I generally just feel safer, somehow, when I know more about what is going on - and Spirit has always done a good job of telling me what is going on: why the delay, why the turbulence, why this and that... and that means a lot to me.

I purchased a carry on bag online…was supposed to cost $72 but after a whole slew of bs charges, the total was over $175.00. Because of these hidden charges, I will not even consider flying Frontier ever again. It’s just not worth the hassle. I’m scratching this company off my list forever.

Flight was OK. Seats were good no cell phone charges on the plane no TVs or entertainment.

There were 3 leg for the trip and each leg was delayed by 90 minutes or more. The boarding process takes forever with people waiting on the jetway even though most folks do not have carry-on. The whole process is poorly managed.

Flight cancelled and was told by a rude gate agent that they don’t accommodate on other airlines. Had to wait 5 hours for a connecting flight that had a 7 hour layover. Would not allow bags to be checked early so we couldn’t go through security .Had to rent a car for the afternoon to store bags and get a meal. Also incurred a hotel fee. No apology or reason given for the cancellation- just rudeness.

They cancelled the flight then did nothing to help us rebook. It was awful - I won’t fly with them again

The process of buying the ticket and navigating all the hidden charges that Frontier throws at you was a terrible experience. The actual airport experience and flying was fine.

The truck that was refueling the plane drove away with the hose still connected to the plane and ripped part of the plane off with it

Not have to pay for every single item to take a flight. Seating and delays sucked.

Flight was cancelled and I had to spend the night in the airport lugging my suitcase around

If you don’t check in 24 hours in advance, they will charge you $110 to check your bag instead of the $30. I did not get an email with this information and did not check in. In addition, my flight home was cancelled at layover and I had to spend the night in the airport, and then have another layover at another airport before making it home. Will not fly frontier again.

Frequently asked questions

  • Get your trip off to an excellent start by being well prepared. Pack your passport or ID, travel documents and medications first. After that, think about downloading a few movies on your tablet for a sans-guilt binge session. Or, throw in that juicy novel you’ve been itching to read. Lastly, a few healthy snacks and a good-quality neck pillow will go a long way to making the trip as comfy as possible.
  • Remember that there’s also a list of prohibited items for your hand luggage which can differ between carriers and flight routes. As a general rule, avoid carrying anything explosive, sharp or flammable. This includes things like razor blades, knives, flares and aerosol cans. Sporting equipment like baseball bats, and objects considered weapons, such as swords and batons, are also banned from the cabin.
  • Whether traveling long or short-haul, layering up is key to flying comfortably. Wear loose, breathable fabrics that will keep you cool and pack a sweater for any variations in cabin temperatures. Your feet will be happiest in a pair of sneakers or flat shoes.
  • Lessen your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition which can be caused by sitting for lengthy periods, by regularly walking around the cabin. Otherwise, do some gentle lower limb exercises in your seat. If you’re at higher risk of developing DVT, think about wearing compression socks.

Travelmath

Travel Cost Calculator

Quick links, trip pricing calculator.

Travelmath provides an online cost calculator to help you determine the cost of driving between cities. You can use this data to figure out a budget for a road trip. The driving calculation is based on the average fuel efficiency of your vehicle, and you can change the gas mileage in mpg or L/100 km to match your exact make and model. Gas prices are automatically estimated based on current fluctuations, and again you can adjust these to fit your local gas station prices. Both U.S. and international units are available to make the calculations easier to use, and the output is given for both one-way and round trip travel routes.

Check the driving distance for your planned route, and see if the total driving time requires an overnight stay. If it's a long trip, you may want to research some hotels along the way . Or compare whether it's better to fly or drive to your destination.

We are looking at 10 nights with a total cost of around £3,000 ish (we live in the UK). Is November/Decembe a good time to go ? It seems hit and miss with rain and I'm also concerned about the seaweed.

We are looking for a nice hotel, nice beaches, day trips and the chance to explore outside the hotel.

We enjoy the beach, pool, activities (water sports, boat trips, snorkelling/scuba) and day trips (caves, forests, nature) etc. We are less interested in sight seeing buildings and history. We dont want to party all night long, but we do want evening entertainment or evenings out with some drinks in bars with music etc.

I took her to Punta Cana in October a few years ago, she enjoyed it but I was very dissapointed. We went for 10 days but there was heavy rain for the first 7 days. We were advised not to leave the hotel but there wasn't anything outside the hotel anyway (we just went to an overpriced small shopping center nearly an hour away). In fact everything was insanely overpriced, I was horrified. And the evening entertainment at the hotel was dreadful.

I dont want to make the same mistake again, so this time I'm seeking for advice about Cancin as now shes 18 it might be our last father and daughter holiday together.

Weather is usually very nice and minimal occasional showers, hard to predict seaweed we hardly experienced any on Cancun beach our last three visits there.

I would start with searching your dates at 5* all inclusives. On the usual sites Priceline or Orbitz then come back with more specific questions.

The Maya Train Will Get You to All of Yucatán’s Best Spots. But Not Yet.

In December, the train began running on its first route through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. On a five-day journey a few months later, the author encountered enthusiasm, and scheduling hiccups.

A singular train track, with one short train, cuts through a lush deep forest.

By Elisabeth Malkin

Elisabeth Malkin has been visiting the Yucatán Peninsula for three decades.

I stepped off the platform at the gleaming new Maxcanú train station, eager to see the magnificent Maya archaeological site of Uxmal. All I needed was a taxi to take me there, a trip of about 30 miles away.

There are no taxis, said the stationmaster, as we stood on the polished limestone floors of the high-ceilinged station, which was cool and breezy despite the brilliant late-morning sun outside. And I was the third person in two weeks to get off at Maxcanú expecting to reach Uxmal, he said.

I was midway through a five-day trip to explore the brand-new Maya Train and several of its destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico . Designed to run 965 miles (1,554 kilometers) around a loop of 34 stations when completed, the train will whisk passengers in cool comfort through colonial cities, archaeological sites, splashy resorts and tropical forests.

Now I was stunned. Wrangling a taxi has never been a problem in Mexico. But the drivers gathered in the main square of Maxcanú offered only beat-up vans that hopscotch through small towns, where I might or might not find a taxi to Uxmal. The next van was leaving in 45 minutes.

Yucatán’s layers of history have long held me spellbound. During earlier car trips, I have clambered up deserted Maya temples and palaces, stepped into the cool naves of massive 16th-century churches and visited restored haciendas, testaments of the ostentation — and hardship — of the peninsula’s 19th-century plantation economy. Traveling by train, I thought, would allow me to steep myself in more of that history.

But as I found in Maxcanú, a train won’t necessarily get you to where you want to go.

During my February trip, I traveled on the only route then available, an east-west leg that opened in December and runs from Cancún to Mérida, and then south through the port city of Campeche to the Maya site of Palenque (a short route between Cancún and Playa del Carmen opened last month, with three trains a day). I encountered scheduling confusion, unfinished stations and a dearth of trains — just two operating daily each way between Cancún and Campeche, and only one to Palenque. Overnight sleepers and special dining trains seem years away.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador considers the Maya Train his showcase development project, and wants to inaugurate the rest of the train before he leaves office on October 1. Based on my experience, that goal seems elusive.

A $29-billion route through the jungle

I started my journey in Cancún, where in the pre-dawn gloom the station hovered like a glowing spaceship. An attendant scanned the ticket I had bought online and a half-dozen more pointed me toward my tourist-class car, which was about a quarter full. I planned to go to Campeche, about 300 miles away, stopping once each day. At 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) an hour, the train covers the route in about six hours, the same as a car. (When construction is complete, the train’s speed should increase to 160 kilometers an hour.)

The car’s wide windows looked out at a wall of low jungle. The blue-green seats were comfortable and there was ample space between the rows. I bought a very good cappuccino at the snack bar, but declined the plastic-wrapped sandwiches. The rest of the merchandise was fruit cups, milk boxes and junk food.

The train will ultimately cost much more than the $29 billion budgeted so far, and it’s not the first time ambitious planners have alighted on the region. Cancún was once a tiny fishing village, selected half a century ago as a tourist hub. Last year 10 million international tourists flew into its airport, more than the airports of Mexico City, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta combined.

But uncontrolled growth has stressed the Caribbean coast’s fragile environment. The Maya Train, scientists warn , will push those problems south, threatening the area’s water supply, its unique system of underground limestone caves and its vast nature reserves.

Mr. López Obrador has charged ahead, handing the train over to the military , and arguing that it will spread Cancún’s wealth and attract new visitors. Mexico received more than 42 million overseas tourists last year and they spent almost $31 billion .

Local governments see an opportunity. “The train will allow people to disperse throughout the peninsula,” said Michelle Fridman, the tourism secretary for Yucatán state, which promotes dozens of attractions far beyond highlights like Mérida and Chichén Itzá .

Now that the train is operating, transport companies will begin to connect stations with lesser-known sites nearby, she said.

It’s fair to ask whether the train is the most effective way to develop the peninsula’s tourism. Tour companies already run trips to many sites from major cities, which are well served by buses. Driving a rental car through most of the area is considered safe , according to U.S. State Department travel guidance .

Route of Mexico’s Maya Train

Canceled trip.

It took two hours (and one time-zone change) to reach Valladolid, a colonial city of handsome streets and ancient churches, where I bought the rest of my tickets at the station. A tourist-class ticket from Cancún to Valladolid costs 472 pesos (around $28) for foreigners and 355 pesos (around $21) for Mexicans. First class, with wider seats, costs 755.50 pesos and 566.50 pesos, and discounts are available for older travelers and residents of the five states along the train’s route. (A first-class bus from downtown Cancún to Valladolid costs between 222 and 344 pesos, depending on the time of day, and takes half an hour longer.)

It was impossible to run the new Maya Train tracks into dense city centers and the Valladolid station, like the rest, was outside the urban core. A waiting bus took disembarking passengers downtown, a 15-minute ride for 35 pesos.

That day I toured Ek Balam , the site of a ninth-century Maya kingdom that is dominated by a 100-foot palace distinguished by a facade of carvings depicting winged warriors, stylized animal features and geometric patterns bordered by giant fangs. Admission to the site includes entry to the X-Canché cenote, one of thousands of limestone sinkholes that were sacred to the Maya.

Later that afternoon, I was wandering through the Museum of Ethnic Clothing, a private collection of traditional dress, embroidery and hats, when a WhatsApp message from the ticket office blinked on my phone. My train scheduled for the following day was canceled.

I decided to deal with the problem in the morning and enjoy the city. As I wandered past the antique shops and boutique hotels of the elegant Calzada de los Frailes, it was clear that Valladolid’s tourism, and the infrastructure to handle it, was well established. The Maya Train is simply an alternative way to reach a city that tourists discovered years ago.

‘We’re on the Tren Maya!’

In the morning, I found that my train had not been canceled, but the station for which I had a ticket, Tixkokob, was closed. I got off instead one stop earlier at Izamal, known for its ocher streets and the giant Franciscan convent of San Antonio de Padua, built atop the ruins of a pyramid.

During the 90-minute ride, I heard widespread enthusiasm among fellow travelers who expressed a willingness to give the train time to work out the kinks. “We’re an experiment,” said Oliva Escobedo Ochoa, 64, who was vacationing from her home in central Mexico.

Leticia Iliassich, 57, who is Mexican, was traveling with her Croatian husband along with relatives from Mexico and Croatia. They had initially been scheduled on an earlier train to Mérida that had been canceled. “We knew that it was a new project,” she said. “We don’t mind.”

The group had already sent a video to friends declaring, “We’re on the Tren Maya!”

At the Izamal station I hitched a 15-minute ride into the town center with a man who had asked me to take his photo alongside the train and his father. From there I negotiated a taxi to Hacienda San Lorenzo Aké, a working hacienda that still turns the fiber from an agave plant called henequén into coarse rope. Global demand for henequén, known as Yucatán’s “green gold,” brought fantastic wealth to the region in the mid-19th century, speckling the peninsula with more than 1,000 haciendas. ( Many are now sumptuous hotels.)

Where geometry, nature and the divine merge

It was during my third day that I found myself stuck in Maxcanú, after a 90-minute train ride from Izamal. The stationmaster, an army captain, offered me a ride to Uxmal, just as he had to the stranded tourists before me.

Eying Uxmal’s 4 p.m. final ticket sale, I accepted.

My situation made it clear just how distant the Maya Train’s promises are for tourists seeking to explore more of Yucatán. In time, that will change, said Ms. Fridman, the tourism secretary. “The idea is to have more hotels along the train line,” she said. “That will happen little by little.”

But Uxmal , among the most stunning of the Maya sites, made up for the inconvenience. Uxmal’s grand buildings are faced with intricate decorative masks as well as friezes in which geometry, nature and the divine merge. New plaques at each structure offer detailed information in English and Spanish, part of the government’s investment in improving displays at Maya sites for the train project.

Most tourists either take day trips by car or bus to Uxmal from Mérida or stay at one of three nearby hotels. As I finished dinner at my hotel, the dining room began to fill up: 47 Polish tourists had arrived.

Panama hats and a cramped van

My plan for the day was to go by taxi to Bécal, a town where Panama hats are woven in limestone caves to keep the fibers soft, and then pick up the afternoon train in nearby Calkiní for the port city of Campeche.

But I spent so much time watching the hat-making demonstration and then fitting my new hat and buying gifts that we set off with little time to reach the station. To my chagrin, I missed the train, the last one of the day.

On Calkiní’s central square, I found a van that was leaving for Campeche. Cost: 65 pesos. Time: about 1 hour and 20 minutes, similar to what I would have spent on the train. Of course, I was trapped in a cramped seat and had to listen to the driver’s choice of sentimental ballads, but I was dropped off in downtown Campeche, close to my hotel.

The next day, I toured the Museum of Maya Archaeology , an expertly curated collection that included haunting jade funeral masks, glyphs and delicate ceramic figures.

José Madrigal, 45, an engineer from Fremont, Calif., was trying to make Maya pottery interesting for his twin sons. The boys had just turned 5 and their birthday present had been a ride on the Maya Train. “They love trains,” Mr. Madrigal said. Then the family moved on, keeping up a brisk clip through the museum. They had another train to catch.

Should you take the train?

Yes, if you are traveling between larger stations. The train also offers a way to get to Palenque, which is harder to reach and has roads with security concerns. Travelers can stow bicycles on board.

To see train times, check the destinations on the website . You cannot buy tickets online more than a week in advance. But when you finally board, the ride is smooth — and the coffee is excellent.

Southwest To End Flights To This Popular Island Near Cancun

It’s been a tough time recently for the airline industry with questions about safety and route cuts coming from some of the major airlines flying to the Mexican Caribbean.

In the latest move, Southwest Airlines announced in its earnings call on Thursday that it planned to end operations at a key island airport in the region.

The End of Island Time

Cozumel island

Southwest Airlines announced on Thursday that it experienced a net loss of $231 million in the first quarter of the year, and in addition to cost control measures, including limiting hiring, it will close its flight operations to four airports, including one in the Mexican Caribbean.

The four airports that will lose Southwest Airlines flight service include Houston Intercontinental Airport, Bellingham International Airport, Syracuse International Airport, and, unfortunately, Cozumel International Airport.

Southwest Airlines planes flying on a clear day

“To improve our financial performance, we have intensified our network optimization efforts to address underperforming markets. Consequently, we have made the difficult decision to close our operations at Cozumel International Airport,” said Southwest Airlines President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Jordan in a statement about the end of service to the airport. “I want to sincerely thank our employees, the airports, and the communities for all their incredible support over the years.”

The service to Cozumel International Airport will come to an end on August 4.

Walking path for the travelers at the Airport of Cozumel

Southwest Cozumel Operations

Southwest Airlines only had one permanent and two seasonal destinations to and from Cozumel.

The company’s regular flights originated in its original airport of service, Houston Hobby Airport.

Meanwhile, it offered seasonal flights from Denver International Airport and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Southwest Plane at Airport

The departure of Southwest Airlines service in Cozumel brings to a close the last flights of a low cost United States carrier to the airport.

Southwest Service to the Mexican Caribbean

Despite this, Southwest Airlines still offers 13 regular routes to and from cities in the United States to Cancun International Airport.

That includes flights to and from Denver and Houston Hobby Airport.

Cancun International Airport

It also offers seasonal flights to Cancun from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Southwest Airlines currently does not offer any flights directly to and from Merida International Airport or the new Tulum International Airport.

Issues With Future Expansion

Southwest plane about to take off

For those hoping for a Southwest Airlines expansion to Tulum or additional flights to Cancun beyond the one starting soon from Orlando, travelers may have to wait a while.

Unfortunately, the airline is dependent on Boeing aircraft, and the issues that the airplane manufacturer is facing are related to safety concerns that are spreading to the airlines themselves.

Southwest originally planned on having an additional 79 aircraft this year, according to reports from the company . It announced in its earnings report that the number has now dropped to 20 this year due to the challenges faced by Boeing.

Vendors on a Street Leading Up To the Beach in Cozumel, Mexico

That means that additional capacity and routes to the Mexican Caribbean are essentially off the table for this year. Hence, the ending of flight operations at Cozumel International Airport.

Recommendations For Visitors

Southwest Airlines frequent fliers used to flying to Cozumel for an island beach resort vacation getaway will have to fly to Cancun instead and then use alternative transportation to find their way to get to the island.

cozumel beach

Alternatively, there are still full-service airlines in the United States which are serving the popular travel route.

Hopefully, once Southwest Airlines gets past its airplane and financial issues it can look at new destinations and routes again in the Mexican Caribbean.

That would include flights to the new Tulum International Airport in addition to hopefully restarting flights to the Mexican Caribbean island beach escape of Cozumel.
