2010 - 2012 Xplorer Xcell

Those who know the freedom that goes with roads less travelled have already met the Xplorer, from Jurgens Safari. Tough as teak, it allows you to travel where it’s rough yet have superb luxury and comfort when you arrive.       Now Jurgens Safari are releasing the Xplorer Xcell, for those who wish to invest a little less but enjoy the adventure even more.       Looking only at the dimensions of the Xplorer Xcell, there’s no difference. But this new and exciting model is absolutely perfect for the mom and dad who have one or two children. That’s because there is a double bed for kids, in the front end of the Xplorer Xcell, while mom and dad have a side double bed that converts to a daytime four-seat dinette for the family.       Another big difference is that while the Xplorer has a door either side, the Xplorer Xcell has just the one door. It’s on the same side as the superbly neat slide-out kitchen with two-burner stove and kitchen sink with hot and cold running water. The kitchen unit is on roller bearings, so it slides in and out really smoothly and easily.       To help keep the price down, the kitchen has no fridge/freezer, though it’s an optional extra many people will choose to have.       Next difference is that there is no front hatch, where the Xplorer has the Stargazer unit. Instead, there is a standard window.       Like the Xplorer, the Xplorer Xcell comes with more nice-to-haves. Awning, outside table, Porta-Pottie storage, insect screens on door and windows, a pair of 25-litre jerry cans, privy tent with pull-out shower handle, water bottle with pump and level indicator, two gas bottles and regulator - the list goes on. And yes, it includes the pop-up roof with insect-screen surround and dust pressure hatch that Xplorer owners appreciate so much.

Dad will be pleased to know about the front and rear bush bars, the heavy-duty jockey wheel with removable bracket clamp, the heavy-duty axle with rubber torsion independent swing-arm suspension ... He’ll also want to know that the gross vehicle mass is 1650 kg while the tare is 1256 kg, giving a very useful payload of 394 kg. Of course, dad will be aware of the requirement regarding mass of the tow vehicle, or he can ask his local Jurgens Safari dealer. The new Jurgens Safari Xplorer Xcell was on view at the Pretoria Show for the first time and proved to be big a hit.

Caravan Review: Jurgens Safari Xcape 2016 Facelift

I’m sure you’ve seen plenty about the Jurgens Safari Xcape in this magazine. They’d be included in articles ranging from travel adventures to innovative DIY projects. This little off-roader really is a looker. And now, it’s even more handsome, thanks to a rugged facelift. Actually, the latest changes are not just on the outside, as there are quite a few modifications on the inside as well.

I got to tow the Jurgens Safari XCape Facelift 2016 for a short trip up to the Ganzekraal Coastal Resort. From my campsite, it was literally 50 metres to beach. Sounds idyllic, right? Unfortunately, even though it was summer, the weather was grim – the wind tanked that night as only the Cape Doctor can!

However, it certainly was an excellent test for setting up the XCape. The caravan is designed for two people, and I was impressed by the simplicity of setting it up… in terrible weather, nogal.

The first thing you’ll notice on the outside is the new look – redesigned decals and charcoal chequer-plate elements, with black 15” rims to add to the style appeal.

The macho aluminum tread-plate simply screams “bush”, “outdoors” and “off-road”. This van is meant for the outdoors. And, following recent caravan and trailer trends of “living outside your van”, the exterior pantry has been enlarged.

The outside split hatch (on the passenger side) has been moved back to sit over the wheel, and provides more work surface, which now includes drawers and shelves as well as canvas frontage. The size of the hatch has been increased, and where the two-plate stove on the older models took up more than half of the work surface, there is now room for the stove and a wash basin, and you still have space left to work! Moving the hatch back has made room in the front (in the nose) for an outside fridge (now a 60L SnoMaster Fridge/ Freezer) on a slide.

We have to note that having the larger outside kitchen area means that there is no longer a window on the left side of the van. However, the pop-up roof has also been improved to add more headroom. Instead of just lifting on one side as before, the new model has a traditional pop-top. The XCape also has an outside privacy cubicle with a hot- and cold-water shower.

As you step into the new Xcape, the first change you’ll notice is that all storage spaces now have removable, canvas zip doors, and that the bed sidehatch is bigger.

Replacing the solid doors with zippered canvas means that there’s no chance of finding your cupboard door lying on the floor after an off-road trip, even when tackling Van Zyl’s Pass – I’ve recently completed that trip, and, let me tell you, it’s hard on a van!

There is no shortage of packing space in the Xcape. Apart from the bed and a small shelf, every conceivable surface inside can be used for storage!

The bed is large and comfortable. The design guys have used a clever sliding section to create an extra-large sleeping area, which is held up on the outside by four support legs. There is an extra canvas awning which sets up over the slide-out section of the bed on the outside, to protect you from the sun and rain.

The interior curtain fabric has been changed, and is now in natural grey tones, and the finishes and furniture are in grey.

Description

The 2011 Jurgens Safari XCELL is a fully off-road caravan which sleeps 4 comfortably. The unit has a pullout kitchen fitted with a gas stove, basin facility with running water. The XCELL has a full bathroom facility consisting of a shower housing / basin / running water and includes a privy tent on the off side, making it very convenient when there is no ablution facility available. The XCELL has an 80litre water tank, geyser and includes rear mounted spare wheel and corner steadies. Brad Harris plug is fitted at the A frame. The unit has an awning two sides and a front wall, all of which are modular.

Standard Items include: Crockery, fire extinguisher, 220V cable, wheel brace, warning triangle, water tank and pump, external lights, multi plug and spare wheel. Jerry cans and holders, 2x gas bottles.
