The Perhentian Islands Travel Guide

Last Updated: September 2, 2023

A stunning beach view in the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia with clear waters and lush palm trees and jungle

The Perhentian Islands in Malaysia are hugely popular with snorkelers and divers, as the reefs and crystalline waters surrounding them are home to a wide variety of coral, sea turtles, sharks, and colorful fish. The Malay word Perhentian roughly translates to “stopping point” — an appropriate name considering most travelers who visit here end up staying longer than anticipated.

The Perhentians are composed of two main islands, Perhentian Kecil (“Lesser Perhentian”) and Perhentian Besar (“Greater Perhentian”), as well as three uninhabited islands. Despite being the smaller island, Kecil is the busier of the group, offering cheaper accommodation and more things to do. Besar has more resorts and caters to families, honeymooners, and upscale travelers.

These islands are where travelers come to slow down, relax, and enjoy the laid-back pace of island life. While the islands are more expensive than the rest of Malaysia, they are worth the price. They’re the perfect chill-out spot to disconnect, soak up the sun, and lounge away the days.

The travel guide to the Perhentian Islands will show you how to make the most of your visit and save money while you’re here!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in the Perhentian Islands

People walking down the beach with clear waters and lush palm trees in Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

1. Go jungle trekking

Most beaches are accessible via jungle paths which offer the chance to see lizards, monkeys, and flying foxes. Long Beach to Coral Bay is a popular route, as is hiking Besar Island north to south and taking the trail from Long Beach to D’Lagoon Windmill. No guides are needed for these hikes.

2. Relax at the beach

On Kecil, Long Beach is the most popular, while Coral Beach has a more laid-back atmosphere. On Besar, Teluk Dalam is quieter while Love Beach is livelier. You can easily rent snorkeling gear for 20 MYR per day. Long Beach is a good choice for snorkeling.

3. Go scuba diving

The Perhentians are home to sea turtles, sharks, and all kinds of coral and fish. Expect to pay around 85-100 MYR per dive and 1,100 MYR for an Open Water certification course. Turtle Bay Divers, Bubbles, and Monkey Dives are some of the biggest dive schools.

4. See the turtles

The islands are home to a significant turtle population. Head to Turtle Beach (on Besar) at night between June-September to catch a glimpse of them laying their eggs and the baby turtles making their way to the sea. It’s an amazing sight to see!

5. Go snorkeling

Every resort rents snorkeling gear and arranges snorkeling tours. It’s 20 MYR to rent gear and popular snorkeling spots on Besar include Teluk Pauh, Shark Point, and Tanjung Basi. A guided half-day snorkeling trip costs around 30-40 MYR per person, including equipment.

Other Things to See and Do in the Perhentian Islands

1. watch the sunset.

Coral Bay, on Kecil, is the perfect spot to watch the sunset and it’s just a few minutes away from the hotels and resorts. If you’d prefer to take in the sight away from the crowds, there are a couple of small and private unnamed beaches next to D’Lagoon where you can take in the view in a more laid-back setting.

2. Join a “fire party”

Head to Bubu Long Beach Resort at night between 10-11pm for an evening of hula and fire dancing on the beach. There are no clubs in the Perhentians; everyone just sits on the beach drinking and watching the locals perform. It’s free and you can bring your own food and drinks, though there are food and drinks for sale too.

3. Volunteer to save the turtles

The nesting areas on the islands are frequently in danger due to oil spills, habitat destruction, and natural disasters. The Perhentian Turtle Project accepts volunteers for multi-week stays between April-September. Volunteering isn’t free as it’s one of their main fundraising sources, but your money goes to conservation and keeping the project running. The Perhentian Turtle Project has a two-week volunteer program costing 3,621 MYR and a 3-week program costing 4,560 MYR. Food and accommodation are included.

4. Go sea-kayaking

The waters around the islands are excellent for sea kayaking. Expect to pay 60-80 MYR for a rental. Long Beach is one of the most popular places to kayak, though you can also kayak around the 14-kilometer (9-mile) coast of Kecil in around 3-5 hours.

5. Relax at Adam & Eve Beach

This is one of the quietest beaches on Kecil as people usually go here just to sunbathe and relax. It’s tucked away in the northwest of the island, with clear water perfect for snorkeling. Few people make it here so you can escape the crowds. Bring a lunch, a book, and lounge away the afternoon.

6. See the Perhentian mosque

The A R Rahman Pulau Perhentian Mosque is built over the water on Perhentian Kecil. It’s a large, mostly white mosque composed of several buildings and a minaret (the traditional tower where the call to prayer is played). It’s possible to visit inside the mosque as long as you’re dressed appropriately (knees and shoulders covered) and there isn’t ongoing worship. Admission is free.

7. Day trip to Redang Island

Established in 1994, Terengganu Marine Park is Malaysia’s first marine park. Redang is the largest island in the park and a good starting point for underwater adventures. There are over 25 dive sites surrounding the island, which is located about an hour by boat from the Perhentian Islands. There are no regular ferries here, but you can take an organized day trip or hire a private boat to take you there. Day trips start at 700-900 MYR per person.

8. Admire the view from the D’Lagoon Windmills

These windmills, installed in 2007 to assist in creating more reliable electricity, offer one of the most spectacular views over the islands. You can hike up to the viewpoint from Long Beach in about 30-40 minutes. A metal staircase leads back from there to another (unnamed) beach, but if you choose to descend, be careful as the staircase has corroded badly over the years.

9. Disconnect from the world

Wi-Fi and even electricity can be spotty on the islands, making this a perfect place to truly disconnect. Don’t fight it – enjoy it!

The Perhentian Islands Travel Costs

A person riding a motorbike down a sandy street with low buildings on both sides in the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Hostel prices – There aren’t any hostels on the islands, but rooms at the beach houses average around 75 MYR per night for a double. These homestays usually include private bathrooms and a shared kitchen or private kitchenette (usually a hot plate and/or electric kettle). Many have air-conditioning and Wi-Fi, though not all do.

There aren’t too many options online so be prepared to book in person on arrival.

There are campsites available costing around 60-75 MYR per night. Tents are included, but sleeping bags normally are not.

Budget hotel prices – There are a few basic hotels on the islands with prices starting at 165-285 MYR per night for a double room with a private bathroom. These hotels may or may not include Wi-Fi and air-conditioning so be sure to check before you book.

For a budget hotel with Wi-Fi and breakfast included, expect to pay at least 350-465 MYR. These hotels offer air-conditioning, usually have a restaurant, and sometimes have a pool.

Airbnb is available in the Perhentian Islands, with most options being jungle bungalows or villas. An entire bungalow that sleeps two people costs 335-400 MYR.

Average cost of food – Malaysian cuisine reflects the country’s multicultural makeup, taking influences from China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and other neighbors. Rice or noodles are the basis of most dishes. Seafood and fish feature prominently, as do halal chicken and beef. There is a wide variety of produce, with common ingredients being cabbage, bean sprouts, lotus root, sweet potatoes, taro, and long beans.

The unofficial national dish is nasi lemak , fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk and flavored with pandan leaf, usually served for breakfast. Other dishes include roti canai (a sweet or savory flatbread), ikan bakar laksa (spicy noodle soup), and a plethora of fried noodle and fried rice dishes that vary depending on the region.

On the islands, restaurants serve fresh seafood, fried rice, noodle-based dishes, and soups. Barbeque is a local favorite, serving up tasty grilled fish and seafood. These traditional meals are typically around 8-15 MYR.

For western food or meals at upscale resorts, expect to pay upwards of 35-50 MYR for a meal with a drink. There are no fast-food options on the islands.

A coffee costs around 4 MYR, as does a bottle of water or a soda.

A beer costs around 12 MYR — relatively expensive since it’s technically illegal (most places serve alcohol though, regardless of the laws). You can buy alcohol in hotels and resorts as well as small shops along the beach (especially Long Beach).

Most accommodations here don’t include a kitchen. If you’re planning to cook your own food, you’ll want to buy most of it before you arrive as prices are higher here. Expect to pay 135-160 MYR for a week’s worth of basic staples such as rice, seafood, and seasonal produce.

Backpacking the Perhentian Islands Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking the Perhentian Islands, expect to spend about 160 MYR per day. On this budget, you’re staying in a budget beach house, eating out at cheap restaurants that serve traditional cuisine, avoiding alcohol, doing free activities like hiking and swimming, and walking everywhere.

On a mid-range budget of 370 MYR per day, you can stay in a budget hotel, eat out for all your meals (including the occasional Western meal), take water taxis as needed, and enjoy a few activities like kayaking or diving.

On a “luxury” budget of 755 MYR per day or more, you can stay in a nicer hotel room (with A/C), eat out anywhere you want, take water taxis as often as you want, do guided tours, and enjoy all the activities the Perhentian Islands has to offer. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get an idea of how much you need to budget daily. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in MYR.

The Perhentian Islands Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

A little goes a long way in Malaysia and the Perhentians are no different. It’s hard to spend money here unless you’re really splurging on food and alcohol. That said, here are some extra ways you can save money in the Perhentian Islands if you’re on a budget:

  • Shop around for dive prices – Diving is hugely popular here, so shop around for a dive center that suits your budget. The more dives you do, the cheaper each one becomes.
  • Bring your own alcohol – There is very little alcohol on the islands, and what is available is expensive. Bring your own to save yourself some money!
  • Bring a water bottle – The water here is not safe to drink. To ensure your water is safe to drink, use a filter like Lifestraw . Bringing a reusable bottle with a filter also reduces your environmental impact and your reliance on single-use plastic.
  • Visit during the shoulder season – April-June is the dry season and accommodation prices are a little cheaper during these months. Arrive before peak season to save money and beat the crowds.
  • Bring food with you – Food and groceries on the islands are pricey since they need to be shipped in. Save a few bucks by bringing food and snacks with you.

Where to Stay in the Perhentian Islands

There are no hostels in the Perhentian Islands, though there are homestays and budget hotels available. Here are some suggested places to stay in the Perhentian Islands:

  • Anis View Perhentian
  • Senja Bay Resort
  • Harrera Perhentian
  • Besut Guesthouse

How to Get Around the Perhentian Islands

Boats anchored in the water off a beach in the Perhentian Islands, Malaysia

Bicycle/Motorbike – Unfortunately, there are no bike rentals in the Perhentian Islands.

Water taxi – Water taxis are the main form of transport, costing around 15-25 MYR for most journeys around the island. Ask your hotel/guesthouse staff for a price estimate so you don’t get ripped off.

Ferry – To get to the islands, a bus and ferry from Kuala Lumpur cost around 100 MYR per person. The one-way ferry ticket from Kuala Besut to the islands cost around 35 MYR.

There are also private speed boats available from the mainland for around 350 MYR.

When to Go to the Perhentian Islands

There are two seasons in the Perhentian Islands: the dry season from early March to mid-November and the rainy season from mid-November to early March.

During the rainy season, the islands are empty because almost all businesses close (restaurants, hotels, activities, boats, etc.). Avoid visiting during the rainy season.

July to mid-September is the peak season. With that in mind, April, May, and June are the best months to go to the Perhentians if you’re on a budget, as there are fewer crowds and prices are a bit lower.

July and August offer the best diving conditions since the water is clearest during those months. It’s always hot and sunny during the dry season too, with daily temperatures around 30°C (86°F).

How to Stay Safe in the Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands are relatively safe. However, petty theft is an increasing problem. Make sure you keep your valuables tucked away and don’t flash things like jewelry or cash when you’re out and about. Don’t leave any valuables unattended when at the beach either.

Most crimes are crimes of opportunity so if you take precautions, you’ll likely be fine.

There are no ATM machines on the islands, and would-be thieves know that everyone has lots of cash on them. Make sure to keep your money stored in separate areas, so you can’t lose it all at once should your bag or wallet get lost or stolen.

Always lock the doors and windows of your bungalow when going out. Don’t leave valuables on your bungalow balcony and don’t leave your stuff lying around on the beach when you go swimming. If you’re traveling solo, ask someone to keep an eye on your valuables if you want to take a dip.

There’s not enough tourism yet to for scams to be common, but if you’re concerned, here are some common travel scams to watch out for .

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, though they should avoid walking alone after dark, especially in Perhentian Kecil. Although rare, assaults can happen. As in any destination, solo female travelers should keep an eye on their drinks at all times and never accept drinks from strangers.

Drugs are very illegal in Malaysia. Avoid using them here or you risk stiff penalties and jail time.

If you experience an emergency, dial 999 for assistance.

Additionally, avoid tap water unless you have a water bottle and a filter as it’s unsafe to drink and might get you sick.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. The Perhentian Islands Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Agoda – Other than Hostelworld, Agoda is the best hotel accommodation site for Asia.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.

Blissfully Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

June 5, 2022 by Vanessa Workman Leave a Comment

The thought of taking a Perhentian Island Day Trip had never crossed my mind before. Being an all or nothing kind of gal, when I head to a beach vacation I usually pack for a few solid days of sun, sand and sea. But my recent return trip to Kelantan, Malaysia was already a full schedule of area sightseeing, yet the pull of the nearby Perhentian Islands was strong.

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

So much I wanted to see and do in the Kota Bharu area and I had only seven days to accomplish my mission. However, with it being May I knew that the Perhentian Islands were past the monsoon season and offering their usual slice of paradise. What to do, what to do? My Kelantan trip was not intended for a beach holiday but I needed a dose of those clear waters and white sand beaches in a bad way. Fate or algorithms, but I was pleasantly surprised to have a Perhentian Island day trip offer magically pop up in my social media feed via Kuala Besut based Anjung Holidays . It was also a pleasant surprise to have them say yes to solo traveling me in lieu of the usually 2 person (aka 2 pax) minimum that I often see in Malaysia. I couldn’t book fast enough. This was an opportunity that could not be passed up.

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

My Perhentian Island Day Trip experience was excellent!

My hotel pick up was not inclusive with my Perhentian Island Day Trip package, but per my ‘special’ request. Kota Bharu taxis are a bit higher than the country’s rate average (as of this writing) but insuring I get to Kuala Besut, Terengganu by 8:30am was my priority. Other less expensive options would have been GRAB taxi, local bus service or simply to stay in Kuala Besut and walk to the boat. But from personal experience, GRAB taxis are not always available and the local bus is slower than molasses. Plus, I was staying in Kota Bharu, which I chose as my base camp for this trip .

My Anjung Holidays pre-arranged, taxi driver Amran arrived right on time (7:30am) and we had a comfortable early morning chat and drive to Kuala Besut. Amran even threw in a few impromptu side tours on the way and showed me some sights I hadn’t seen before. The one-hour journey was relaxing and interesting, and definitely worth the RM80 rate. I liked Amran so much I tried to private book him for the next day, but he wasn’t available for the times I needed him.

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

After arriving in Kuala Besut I immediately checked in with Anjung Holidays and picked up my mask and snorkel. Similar to Tioman Island , an extra charge of RM30 is collected at the entry to the pier for the marine Park conservation fee. Most marine parks in Malaysia have such fees, so be sure to keep your ‘receipt’ for the duration of your marine park visit as proof that you paid. During high season boats to Perhentian Islands depart on a regular basis, but having transportation pre-arranged with Anjung Holidays took the stress out of things. All I had to do was stand there with my mask and snorkel and a blank look on my face and I was ushered to the boat I was assigned to. I was in good hands the whole way and barely had to mutter a word. Already the start of a blissful day as far as I was concerned.

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

Drop Off at Perhentian Besar

An hour later we arrived in the Perhentian Islands. The boat pulled up at a dock and I was the only person being dropped off here. I wasn’t sure which part of the Perhentians it was until I saw the mosque across the water (which is located on Perhentian Kecil). Then I knew I was on Perhentian Besar; Tuna Bay to be exact.

Unless you have explored the Perhentian Isands extensively on foot (which I previously have for other travel publications), you may not appreciate the convenience of a boat ride. But trust me these relatively small islands can become quite an adventure when going from land point A to land point B on foot. A boat ride makes exploring the various beaches and adjacent waters much easier.

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

It was just a short wait before my official guide showed up around 10:00am. Two others had joined me on the dock, so it was just us 3 ‘tourists’ for the day. The scheduled snorkeling part of our Perhentian Island Day Trip was from 10:00am until 1:00pm (give or take).

Four to five stops are included in the day trip package, but the locations may vary depending on the weather conditions and the waters. The boat captain (aka guide) will avoid locations with strong under currents or waves, which of course makes for a much more pleasant boat ride and snorkeling experience.

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

The Perhentian Island Day Trip Snorkel Tour

The Perhentian Island Day Trip is a combination of snorkeling and free and easy. The snorkeling tour includes 4 to 5 stops, which last from 20 to 30-minutes each. Our first stop was Turtle Point , just around the bend from our pick-up location. The water was calm and clear, and only a few other boats were in the area. It was at this point that I realized that my tour companions were quite new to snorkeling and swimming. Kudos to Captain Saleh for his kind patience with them. (If you are brand new to snorkeling, he would be a good tour guide choice, so ask for him by name).

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

Our next stop was Teluk KK , which has a lovely beach. The sandy bottom makes it easy to simply walk out into the sea and look under the water. There are also a few snack vendors set up in case you are hungry.

Shark Point Remote area near Teluk KK

We cruised around a bit and anchored at the very popular Shark Point. It was a bit crowded, but our trusty Captain Saleh obviously has klout and priority, as we had considerable buffer zone around our boat. At least one young boat guide was trying to impress his guests by doing a few donuts in the area (not cool), so if you go to this location do be careful of other boats.

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

Our final stop was at Lata Air Berani , which was new to me. We were there primarily to use the fresh water and to get a snack, so I don’t know much about this location other than that. The nearby waterfall offers snorkelers and divers a chance to rinse off or take photos with the Lata Air Berani sign (aka Instagram hot spot).

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

That’s a Wrap

The Perhentian Island Day Trip snorkel tour ended between 12:30pm and 1:00pm and I was dropped back at Tuna Bay. I had until 3:30pm to be free and easy. My entertainment options were to explore the area, grab a bite to eat at a nearby café or just chill on the beach. Me being in chill mode, I did precisely that and enjoyed every blissful moment of the clear Perhentian waters and white sand beach.

Easy Perhentian Island Day Trip

I was instructed to be on the pier by 3:30pm but it wasn’t until 4:00pm that my boat arrived. An hour later I was back in Kuala Besut. Blissfully easy day if ever there was one. I turned in my snorkel and mask and was good to go. For the return trip to Kota Bharu I had planned on taking a local bus or GRAB (if it was available), but since I was so blissfully happy and pleasantly exhausted, I said yes to the first taxi driver who smiled at me. The taxi drivers, btw, were also waiting outside of the Kuala Besut pier, so not to worry about getting stuck in Kuala Besut as it’s an area abundant in taxis. My return trip was RM75 and the smile was inclusive. All in all, my day cost me about RM300 total, which was still a bargain as far as I was concerned.

Taking a Perhentian Island Day Trip from Kota Bharu

How to get there: The Perhentian Islands are located just off the east coast of West (Peninsula) Malaysia. Although they are actually part of the state of Terengganu, many visitors fly into Kota Bharu, Kelantan to get there. Unless, of course, they’re driving. Trains, planes and buses can deliver you to Kota Bharu, with direct flights being the most convenient and least time consuming. If you are coming from the rainy west coast, mini vans as well as buses are available from Penang to Kota Bharu and Kuala Besut. The buses from Alor Setar, Kedah can be an interesting experience, with day and night buses regularly scheduled. This I’ve also done several times and it’s fairly painless. There are also ‘occasionally’ direct flights from Langkawi, Kedah to Kota Bharu. However, if you have your own transportation and drive, then the world is your oyster. When to go: One of the beauties of traveling Peninsula Malaysia is their opposing monsoon seasons. When the east coast is rainy, the west coast is usually sunny and when the west coast is rainy , the east coast is offering the more consistent sunny weather. So basically, regardless of the time of year you choose to travel Malaysia, you can find your preferred climate.

March through October is the best time to visit the Perhentian Islands. Not just because of the weather, but many hotels and guest houses will shut down for the monsoon season, so accommodation choices could get slim. Boat taxis and snorkel and dive trips will also not be available due to waves and currents. But if you just want to be one with nature, then go for it.

What to bring and my two cents: In addition to the usual sunscreen, towel and change of clothes, ladies might consider having a beach cover up or sarong with them out of respect for the general population’s culture. Also, if you have special dietary needs you should bring your own snacks. The seaside offerings at the beach stops don’t necessarily rank high on the healthy choice menu, with hearty meat on a stick being very popular. For snorkeling newbies, if you scream every time a fish comes near you, you will not only scare fish away you will likely disturb other guests. Being mindful of others on your group trip is just a nice thing to do.

How To Get To Perhentian Island

To get to Perhentian Island, you need to take two steps: first, travel to Kuala Besut jetty, where boats leave for the island; second, take a boat to Perhentian Island. How To Get To Kuala Besut Jetty

trip ke perhentian

Kuala Besut jetty is your gateway to Pulau Perhentian~

The fastest way to get to Kuala Besut jetty is by flying from Kuala Lumpur or other cities in Malaysia to Kota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu airports. These are the nearest airports to the jetty, and you can find flights from various airlines, such as AirAsia , Malaysia Airlines , Firefly , and Malindo Air .

The flight duration is about one hour, and the price varies depending on the season, demand, and booking time. You can check and compare flights on trip.com , where you can also book your tickets online.

Once you arrive at the airport, you need to take a taxi to Kuala Besut jetty. The taxi ride takes about one hour from Kota Bharu airport and about 1.5 hours from Kuala Terengganu airport. The taxi fare is around RM90 per car, which can fit up to four passengers.

If you want to save money and don't mind spending more time on the road, you can take a bus from Kuala Lumpur or other cities in Malaysia to Kuala Besut jetty. There are daily buses from various locations, such as TBS terminal in KL, Penang, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, and Singapore.

The bus duration is about 8-10 hours from KL and the price is around RM44 per person. You can check on various bussing platforms to compare prices and book your tickets online.

The bus will drop you off at Kuala Besut bus station, which is about 10 minutes walk from the jetty. You can also take a taxi or a motorcycle taxi for a small fee.

If you prefer a more comfortable and convenient way to get to Kuala Besut jetty, you can take a taxi from Kota Bharu or Kuala Terengganu airports or other locations in Malaysia.

The taxi duration is about 6 hours from KL and the price is around RM1000 per car. You can also negotiate with the driver for a lower price or share the cost with other travelers.

The taxi will take you directly to Kuala Besut jetty, where you can catch a boat to Perhentian Island.

If you like the freedom and flexibility of driving yourself, you can also rent a car from KL or other locations in Malaysia and drive to Kuala Besut jetty.

The driving duration is about 6 hours from KL and the cost depends on the type of car, fuel consumption, tolls, and parking fees. You can use Google Maps or Waze for directions and traffic updates.

You can park your car at Kuala Besut jetty for RM10 per day. Make sure you lock your car and don't leave any valuables inside.

How To Take A Boat To Perhentian Island

trip ke perhentian

The next step is the boat ride!

Once you reach Kuala Besut jetty, you need to take a boat to Perhentian Island. There are two options: public boat or private boat.

Public Boat

The public boat is the most common and affordable way to get to Perhentian Island. The public boat operates daily from 8 am to 5 pm, depending on the weather and demand. The boat fare is RM70 per person for a return ticket, which is valid for one month.

The public boat takes about 45 minutes to reach Perhentian Island. The boat will stop at different beaches on both Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil, depending on where you want to stay. You can tell the boat operator your destination when you board the boat.

The public boat has a luggage allowance of 15 kg per person. If you have more luggage, you need to pay an extra fee. You also need to pay a marine park conservation fee of RM30 per person at the jetty before boarding the boat.

The public boat is safe and comfortable, but it can be crowded and noisy during peak season. You also need to be prepared to get wet when boarding or disembarking the boat, as there is no jetty on the island. Make sure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and protect your electronics and valuables in waterproof bags.

Private Boat

The private boat is a more exclusive and flexible way to get to Perhentian Island. The private boat operates on demand and can take you to any beach on the island at any time. The private boat fare is RM350 per boat for a one-way trip, which can fit up to 12 passengers.

The private boat takes about 30 minutes to reach Perhentian Island. The boat will take you directly to your preferred beach, without stopping at other places. You can also arrange with the boat operator for your return trip.

The private boat has no luggage limit or marine park conservation fee. You can bring as much luggage as you want and enjoy the scenery without paying extra.

The private boat is fast and convenient, but it can be expensive and hard to find during peak season. You also need to be prepared to get wet when boarding or disembarking the boat, as there is no jetty on the island. 07:30 – Breakfast at Kuala Besut Jetty 08:00 – Boat To Perhentian Island 09:00 – Arrival at Long Beach 10:00 – Check-in at Chalet 11:00 – Hike to Windmill View Point (30 Minute) 13:00 – Back to Long Beach & Have Lunch 14:00 – Clean up and rest 16:00 – Swim at long beach 17:00 – 15 Minute Walk to Coral Bay for Sunset 19:30 – Back To the long beach 20:00 – Dinner at Awatif Cafe 21:00 – Fire Dance show at the beach

08:00 – Breakfast 11:00 – Snorkelling (Long Trip Package) 16:00 – Back to Long Beach 17:00 – Shower and rest 19:00 – Dinner 20:00 – Night Life

07:00 – Breakfast 18:00 – Boat back to Kuala Besut Jetty (mainland) 09:00 – Arrival at Jetty 09:30 – Back to KL

I’ll now share the information about the places that I’ve recommended.

Windmill View Point

This is a must-do in your list. The view from the Perhentian Kecil windmill is stunning. It will take you about 30 minutes walk/hike to reach the top. To get started, find the entrance called Nyor 5 Glamping at the long beach. Watch the video highlights below (From 0:35 – 3:27).

Note: The best time to hike is between 11:00-1300 so you’ll have a clear view and best daylight. Please also bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated.

Windmill Starting Point

Sunset at Perhentian Kecil Island (Coral Bay)

Often people miss to watch the sunset at Perhentian Kecil but I would highly recommend that you add this into your list too. From the long beach, lookup for Mummy Cafe and the Coral Bay signboard. It will take you about 15 minutes to reach at Coral Bay. (See the video highlights From 4:38 – 5:59)

How to get Into Perhentian Island?

If you’re driving, navigate straight to the Kuala Besut Jetty (map below) and take the speed boat ride to the Island. If you’re taking a flight, the nearest Airport would be Kota Bahru, Kelantan which is about 70+KM or the Kuala Terengganu Airport, which is about 100+ KM to the Jetty.

Kuala Besut Jetty: Google Map Link

Perhentian Island Boat Schedule

Since Perhentian Kecil and Besar is next to each other, you might be on the same boat with those who wanted to go Perhentian besar. Usually, they’ll drop off those who staying at Perhentian kecil first. The trip from Kuala Besut Jetty to Perhentian Island would take approximately 40 minutes.

Perhentian Island Boat ticket – Online Booking

You can do the booking via Besut Jetty website or alternatively, you can arrange it with the place you will be staying. Usually, Perhentian Kecil’s hotels, resorts etc have their own agents which can do the arrangements for you. Just get in touch with them if you need.

Parking at Kuala Besut Jetty

There is plenty of parking near the jetty and it usually cost RM10/day. I parked my car at Safe Park Parking which is located 300 Meters from the Kuala Besut Jetty.

Best Time To Go Perhentian Kecil Island?

Perhentian is closed from October to March due to bad weather and therefore, best time to go Perhentian would be between March to September.

I would also suggest that you avoid Perhentian during Malaysia Public Holidays and if possible, go on weekdays to enjoy the beach more with less tourist.

Perhentian Kecil Vs Besar

Both islands are located just next to each other. If you’re doing a family trip and want to have quite a night, Perhentian Besar would be the ideal choice. However, if you’re looking into nightlife, budget accommodations, the Perhentian Kecil would suit you. Both islands are equally beautiful and it’s all down to your personal preferences.

You can also take a water taxi (boat) to get to any other islands and they usually charge RM 15/pax – one-way trip.

Perhentian Kecil package (Snorkelling)

You can find various types of snorkelling packages around long beach area ranging between RM30-RM100. I would suggest that you take the Long Trip package (RM50/pax) which should cover the main islands including seeing Turtles, sharks and lunch at the fisherman village (Kg Nelayan)

The nightlife scene is quite lively and you can find a couple of bars along Long Beach and it can be crowded. None of the bars here serves draught beer and a can of beer (Tiger) would cost you RM12.

There is also Fire Dance show at the bars area usually starts about 9PM till late night. If you want to stay away from crowd and enjoy relaxing atmosphere with music, I highly recommend that you go to the bar next to Long Beach Camp area. (The camp area in my video highlights on your way to Coral Bay).

I really enjoyed my stay at Perhentian Kecil but everything here seems to be pricey and a simple (bad) chalet would cost you about RM150 per night and even more expensive during peak times.

The only thing that I didn’t like, there are too many boats with dangerous anchors all over the beach. If you’re walking, please be alert.

Have you been to Perhentian Island? what are you thoughts about it? Did you enjoy it?

Beautifully shaded spot this side of Perhentian Besar. Pretty quiet area, not much can be done at the beach but the snorkel activity will keep you occupied just fine. The water is clear but don't forget to look up either at night because the view is equally breathtaking. Best dining experience.

How to Travel to the Perhentian Islands From Mainland Malaysia

Paradise in the Perhentian Islands – its a faff to get to, which makes it largely tourist-free

If you think you’ve seen paradise, then wait till you visit the Perhentian Islands. Off the northeast coast of Malaysia , this pair of islands offer jungle-fringed beaches with calm water and flawless diving conditions. But getting here is a faff. Here are our route suggestions.

One of the reasons the Perhentian Islands remain so unspoilt is the challenge of finding them – so there’s a refreshing lack of tourists. We’ve broken down the journey into manageable chunks so you can visit Malaysia’s secret beach utopia and diving oasis. It’s worth it, we promise.

Did you know you can now travel with Culture Trip? Book now and join one of our premium small-group tours to discover the world like never before.

Why you should visit the Perhentian Islands

The Perhentian Islands offer tourist-free tropical beaches, spectacular snorkelling conditions and affordable scuba diving schools . While the tourist trail might lead you to Penang or Langkawi, these islands are surprisingly uncommercial. Rather than cars and motorbikes, you’ll find jungle trails and water taxis. But the chance to visit this paradise comes at a cost, which is the schlepp to get here. Be prepared for a full day of travel including flights, a two-hour bus journey and a bumpy half-hour boat ride.

Shipwrecks off the coast of the Perhentian Islands make great dive sites

What you need to know

The Perhentians’ most tempting characteristic directly relates to the challenge of getting here. Visitors need to either take a domestic flight or travel eight hours by road from Kuala Lumpur. If you fly, you’ll head to Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bahru in neighbouring Kelantan state. From the airport, it’s a bus ride to Kuala Besut. The ferry covers the 20km (12mi) to the Perhentian Islands, but be aware that the boats stop operating after 4pm, so time your arrival in Kuala Besut as early as possible. Alternatively, you could book a night in either Kota Bahru or Kuala Terengganu.

Foreign tourists need to pay a RM30 (US$7) conservation fee, while Malaysian citizens pay RM5 (US$1). This is valid for three days (nobody checks and it’s more of an excuse to charge an admission fee). Because of the Eastern Monsoon, the Perhentian Islands only open for business between April and September. Choppy water, torrential rain and storms close much of the islands during the rainy season.

Forms of transportation

Here are the essentials about how to travel to the Perhentian Islands; they include flying, taking the bus and what to expect with the ferry. We strongly recommend flying to Kota Bahru, which cuts travel time in half. Be prepared for three (or four) legs of the journey. Allocate a full day from departure to checking in at your beachfront idyll on the Perhentian Islands .

Fly to Kota Bahru

Direct flights connect Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kuching in Sarawak to Kota Bahru. The fastest way to travel from Sultan Ismail Petra Airport in Kota Bahru to Kuala Besut is by taxi. Fares cost approximately RM80 (US$20) and should take no more than an hour. Alternatively, buses depart every hour costing RM25 (US$6). If you’re on a budget, the 639 bus connects the state capital to Kuala Besut for less than RM10 (US$2.50). However, this third option takes an hour and a half to cover the 56km (34.8mi). And you need to get into the city to catch the bus. Pro tip: because ferries to the Perhentian Islands stop operating each day at 4pm, a taxi for this portion of your journey is definitely worth the cost.

Flying into Kota Bahru airport is the first leg of your journey to the Perhentian Islands

Fly to Kuala Terengganu

Flying into Kuala Terengganu from either Kuala Lumpur or Johor Bahru is an option, too. The Terengganu state capital lies 110km (68.4mi) south of Kuala Besut. Unless you want to explore more of the city, we don’t recommend this option, since it takes twice as long to get to the port compared to flying into Kota Bahru. However, if you want to see Kuala Terengganu as well, and choose this way to travel to the Perhentian Islands, then take the bus to nearby Jerteh. Almost all buses heading north pass through this small town – expect a two-hour journey. From Jerteh, get a taxi to Kuala Besut.

Kuala Terengganu airport is a two-hour drive from Kuala Besut

Buses and trains

Direct buses connect Kuala Lumpur and Kuala Besut on a daily basis; the journey takes anywhere between six and eight hours and costs from RM35 (US$8) per person, and bus drops you off within walking distance of the port at Kuala Besut. Bus departures are limited – there’s one in the morning and one at 10pm. We recommend you take the night bus, which arrives early morning: the last ferry to the islands leaves Kuala Besut at 4pm so if you took the morning bus you’d get here too late and would need to book overnight accommodation. Train services from Kuala Lumpur are even more limited. The train isn’t a great option – there are very few departures and it stop at Wakaf Bahru Station in Kota Bahru, where you have to take a bus or taxi to Kuala Besut.

Buses in KL depart from Bersepadu Selatan Terminal

Ferry from Kuala Besut to the Perhentian Islands

When you arrive in the small port town of Kuala Besut, the final leg involves a speedboat transfer. Almost everyone will try to convince you to use their boat. And they only depart when they’re full between 9am and 4pm. Tickets cost RM35 (US$9) one-way or RM70 (US$17) return (not including a conservation fee).

The ferry should drop you off at your destination in the Perhentian Islands. We suggest buying a return ticket for the sake of convenience. Pro tip: Some companies offer up to 25% discount on return ferries; it pays to shop around. Be prepared for overcrowding on the speedboat and hold tight onto your belongings; it won’t hurt to wrap your electronics in a waterproof cover. In theory, ferries returning to Kuala Besut depart at 8am, 12pm and 4pm. Confirm the time as soon as you get to the Perhentian Islands.

It may be a faff, but you’ll soon forget it and be grateful you made it here at all. Welcome to paradise!

The speedboat ferries take about 40 minutes from Kuala Besut to the Perhentian Islands

Terima kasih cik timm singgah blog ni and sudi backlink entry saya ni :)

hi..yang best stay dekat kampong nelayan ni ke(ambik bilik di sealife) atau stay di long beach lagi best?lagi satu...dari kampong nelayan nak lepak laut malam2 dekat ke? berape minit ye jalan ke pantai?

Hi Iza, sorry sebab lambat pula reply komen ni. Actually kalau nak makan, memang kampong nelayan sangat murah berbanding long beach. Tapi long beach ni kalau malam memang seronok sebab kawasan tu memang banyak kedai makan dan persembahan api.

Cantik2nya gambar awak ambil! Tengah berangan nak ke sana ni.

Ohh Iday..teringat kenangan dekat jeti. Kaki tersagat dek terumbu karang. Luka berdarah teruk sampaikan orang kampung tolong panggil JPAM. Orang lain semua pakat kerumun. Huhuhu walaupun kaki berbalut tetap juga nak menyelam hihihi kenangan betul..

Salam ..nak tanya? Haritu pegi total duit smua brapa ea? Anggaran la

Hari tu guna pakej sekali boat pergi balik + makan 3 hari 2 malam : RM320 Then parent hantar ke jeti, so dalam RM400 untuk 2 orang sekali dengan package. Ini anggaran la. hehe

Step 1: Travelling From Kuala Lumpur To Perhentian Ferry At Kuala Besut

In this first step, I’ll cover the different options for travelling from KL to Kuala Besut jetty for the ferry across to the islands.

Flights From Kuala Lumpur To Perhentian Islands

There isn’t an airport on the islands, so there is no way to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Perhentian Islands by flight.

However, the next best thing to a KL to Perhentian flight is flying to nearby Kota Bharu and then travelling overland to Kuala Besut.  From Kuala Besut, you can take a ferry across to the islands.  It’s also possible to fly to Kuala Terengganu and do the same thing, but Kuala Terengganu is further away and it’s much cheaper and easier to travel to Perhentian Islands from Kota Bharu.

Kota Bharu Airport

While there are no direct flights to Perhentian Islands, the good news is that flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu can be very cheap – I have done it for only RM30! Of course, you have to catch a sales fare to get it this cheap.

I recommend signing up to the AirAsia newsletter for cheap sale fares if you have some time before you travel from Kuala Lumpur to Pulau Perhentian.

Otherwise, you can find the cheapest flights by clicking here .

Once you have made it to Kota Bharu airport, you can take a taxi to Kuala Besut for about RM90 or catch a local bus into Kota Bharu and then bus #639 to Kuala Besut.

There are full details about catching the bus in this guide about travelling from Kota Bharu to Kuala Besut.

Step 2: Travelling From Kuala Besut To Perhentian Islands

Kuala Besut Jetty

Once you’ve made it to the Kuala Besut Jetty, the final part of your KL to Perhentian Island trip is a 30+ minute boat ride. This is sometimes called a ferry, but, in reality, you will be loaded on a small speed boat. These can be overloaded and a tight fit. It can also be a bumpy ride and you may get wet so keep electronics wrapped up and safe.

Before hopping on any boat to the Perhentians, you need to pay the environmental fee, currently RM30 for foreigners and RM5 for Malaysians. This is paid at a separate stall on the left hand side of the departure area and you will be given a receipt to show your boat operator. You also need to pay a local council service fee of RM5 per person.

I’ll go through the different boat options below.

Option 1: Public Boat

These run throughout the day, starting at about 8 am and usually finishing around 5 pm. They can finish earlier in the monsoon period and not many boats run at this time.

You can book a boat service and see the latest timetables by clicking here.

ferry perhentian island to kuala besut

Bigger resorts sometimes have their own boats and you may be able to book this through your accommodation, although often prices are higher.

If you don’t book online, you can buy tickets on arrival at ticket stands and tour offices which are easy to find around the jetty. The usual price is RM70 return.

It is easier to book beforehand here though.

Arrive 30 minutes before your boat departure and make sure you find the same operator as you bought your ticket through. You may need to ask around as it can get confusing, but there are plenty of people around to help.

When you hop on board, let the operator know which beach you are heading to (check with your resort in advance). The boats will stop at most beaches so you may have a bit of a wait until you get to yours. Consider it a free tour!

Occasionally, they may not be able to take you to your beach and you may have to pay a few extra ringgit for a second boat to your destination.

Option 2: Private Boat

You can hire your own boat across to the Perhentians although this is not usually necessary. You can arrange this for about RM400.

The Return Trip: Travelling Back To Kuala Besut

There are less public boat options going from the island back to Kuala Besut with boats usually leaving at 8 am, 10 am, 12 pm and 4 pm. You should ask your accommodation provider to book your return journey for you the day before you want to leave if you have a return ticket.

You can also book your ticket in advance online, and you can see the latest timetables by clicking here.

Show up at least 15 minutes early for your return ferry and expect that you will probably need to stop at other beaches before heading back so make sure you don’t have any tight connections.

Final Words

It’s straightforward to get from Kuala Lumpur to the Perhentians. In terms of how to go to Perhentian Island from KL, the quickest way is to get a flight from Kuala Lumpur then a taxi to Kuala Besut jetty and then a boat out to the islands.

If you want to save money when it comes to how to go Pulau Perhentian from KL, then the cheapest way is to catch an overnight bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Besut jetty and then a public ferry. It can be a lot more tiring though.

The easiest way is to take your own taxi from Kuala Lumpur. You can be picked up right from your hotel.

Jom Baca Tips & Cara Pergi Ke Pulau Perhentian

Haizatt Abdul

  • February 16, 2018

Tapi aku sarankan bawa sebab nak alas perut kalau kalau lapar. Lagipun roti ni boleh bagi makan ikan time snorkelling, baru lah ikan berduyung duyung datang dekat korang.

4. Paling penting dan terpenting, beli air mineral botol besar siap siap. Bajet la dalam 3 hari korang kena minum berapa botol, beli banyak banyak tak apa. Hari tu aku beli 3 botol kongsi dengan kawan aku pun macam tak cukup.

Sebab sana panas dan lepas mandi air masin mesti nak air kosong kan. Penat punggah sikit tak apa, jangan penat bayar kat pulau nanti.

Aku sarankan beli jauh dari jeti sebab air minuman botol besar RM2, padahal sebotol RM 1.50 ja kan. Kalau beli dekat pulau, air minuman sebotol besar RM4. Hah, kau rase?

5. Bawak syampu, sunblock. Losyen siap siap. Sebab kat sana barang sangat lah mahal. Sunblock RM50, syampu pantene botol paling kecil RM12. Kau rase? Nak ke beli. Syampu tu sepatutnya harga dalam RM6 kan?

trip ke perhentian

6. Bawak lah maggi kalau korang nak low budget kat sana.

Makan paling murah RM 8, nasi goreng.

7. Camera jangan lupa bawa, nak nak underwater camera.

8. Hang yang islam jangan nak gatal pi beach party lepas pukul 12am. Kalau sebelum pukul 12 boleh la sebab ada fire show. Lepas tengok fire show, balik lah. Tak payah nak menggatal kat sana.

Kalau kita tak mabuk pun, nanti orang lain yang mabuk, kita terjebak sama. Orang kampung situ jangan nak ikut sangat kalau diorang ajak karaoke ke ajak p beach party ka. Mampuih hang kalau ikut depa.

9. Kalau nak hiking ke windmill, bawa lah kasut, tapi okay ja kalau pakai slipper, aku pakai slipper lawa lawa sampai je ke puncak. Bawa air time hiking sebab korang konfem akan dahaga tahap maksima nanti. Sebab tinggi juga bukit tu dan agak memenatkan.

10. Powerbank macam biasa paling penting. Cas penuh penuh. Hari tu aku pergi dah cas dari rumah, sampai sana rupanya terlupa bawak. Merana beb.

11. Kalau stay dekat Long Beach dan nak makan murah sikit, boleh makan kedai nama kak yah (sebelah turtle bay dive/sebelah kanan camp site).

Situ makan murah tapi bukak sampai pukul 5 petang sahaja. Tapi masa aku pi pun tak sempat nak try dekat kedai kak yah ni, aku makan dekat Awatif Café ja. Kalau kedai bahagian atas sikit dari turtle bay tu agak mahal la. Better lagi Awatif Café.

trip ke perhentian

12. Nak naik kincir angin dalam pukul 5 – 5:30 cun dah. Naik ikut kawasan campsite 15-20 minit hiking. Turun pukul 7 sebab kalau lambat takut gelap, kat situ tak ada lampu.

13. Kalau dari beach lain, boleh sewa bot teksi untuk hantar ke long beach ataw terus ke kincir angina tu. Tapi aku tengok ramai yang lalu ikut campsite aku. Mungkin pakcik bot memang hantar untuk ke long beach then kena hiking sendiri.

14. Kalau stay Long Beach boleh tengok sunrise. Jadi kena rajin bangun pagi, lepas solat subuh tak yah tidur dah. Boleh join mat salleh jogging di gigi air. Kalau nak tengok sunset boleh pergi dekat sha-rila beach. Kalau stay long beach boleh lalu ikut belakang, ada jalan untuk ke sha-rila beach. Walking distance 20 minit.

15. Sentiasa pakai lifejacket walaupun pandai berenang semasa snokerling sebab keselamatan. Ramai yang cramp kaki ketika berenang.

16. Barang berharga tolong bawak sekali kalau nak pergi mana mana.
