Best time to go on a road trip from Washington DC to Miami

Miami has a tropical climate making it an ideal vacation spot all year round. The route can be done throughout the year but pay attention to weather alerts due to some higher elevation areas and areas prone to storms.

Summers along this route are warm with the weather becoming hotter and more humid as you go down south. Along the coast, summer will also bring the monsoon season where visitors may experience rain from May 15 through October 15. Summer is long and hot with the chances of rain.

While the coast can still get cold snaps in the winter, winters are generally warmer than in the inland and are often very short. Snow is very uncommon in this area. Temperatures can vary between 20 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit depending on where you are along the route.

April or September and October are the most optimal times to visit. This time usually brings in the best rates, crowds and average weather ranging from 63-80 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the road trip route.

Mid to end of March brings in spring break for college students. The coast of Florida fills, bringing in hundreds of thousands of partiers to the beaches and city of Miami. Avoid going at this time of the year as prices will rise and crowds will be much busier than usual.

Miami also brings in many electronic and hip hop music festivals between May and July which will also bring a larger, younger crowd.

Route from DC to Miami

  • Outer Banks
  • Amelia Island
  • Finish: Miami
  • Total distance:  1,345 mi / 2,165 km
  • Total driving time:  24 h

1. Washington DC

The Washington DC to Miami road trip is about to leave the station. But if you’re not a capital resident, make sure to fit in time for DC sightseeing before departing.

Discover the National Mall

The National Mall is an unparalleled park in the heart of Washington DC. It presents monuments, memorials and museums of huge national significance.

In its east the US Capitol Building, with 365 iconic steps, is a must see. At the park’s western end the Lincoln Memorial is another mandatory spot.

Between the two the Washington Monument, shooting up towards the sky like nothing else, calls for your attention.

Also with celebrated museums, you can spend days exploring the National Mall before hitting the open roads on the Washington DC to Miami drive.

How about a lineup of the National Museum of Natural History , National Gallery of Art and National Museum of American History ? That’s still just a few of the many top National Mall museums.

Wave at the White House

The White House is positioned at the northern end of the National Mall. It’s the home and workplace of the president of the United States .

You can admire the president’s home from two sides: North Lawn and South Lawn.

At North Lawn, and Pennsylvania Avenue, you get the closest views of the White House. The South Lawn, facing the National Mall, is larger and doesn’t offer as intimate views.

But regardless of north or south, waving at the White House, and possibly the president, is the perfect start to your Washington DC to Miami adventure.

Steps leading up to the white Capitol Building in Washington DC

Route info: This Washington DC to Miami route, which goes for maximum scenery, now leads to the Outer Banks in North Carolina. But if you’re short on time, head straight south to Wilmington instead. Although you then miss out on the unique Outer Banks setting, it saves you 139 miles (224 km) and 3 hours.

2. Outer Banks, NC

  • Driving distance:  286 mi / 460 km
  • Driving time:  5.5 h

The first and longest drive on the entire DC to Miami itinerary takes you from the US’ political epicenter to endless sand dunes. Welcome to North Carolina’s Outer Banks, or as the locals say: the paradise on earth.

Many come for the beaches. The easy-going beaches are the Outer Banks’ main attractions . But this place far away from the hustle and bustle also is where American history has been made.

Unwind at Cape Hatteras

For coastal scenery the Outer Banks is an area hard to match. From the Virginia-North Carolina border down to the tip of Ocracoke Island there is an abundance of beaches, lighthouses and towns to check out.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore, preserving a delicate portion of the Outer Banks, showcases it all. Its numbers speak for themselves:

  • 70+ miles (113 km) of soft coastline.
  • 7 sleepy towns.
  • 2 proud lighthouses.

The vast Cape Hatteras, where you always find your own space, is an appreciated break from reality. When you drive from Washington DC to Miami, it’s one of those treasured places off the beaten path.

Picture the first flight ever

If you thought the Outer Banks is just about beaches, think again. This stop has played a crucial role in the history of flight.

Wilbur and Orville Wright needed a sandy, windy and isolated area for their quest towards the first human flight. The Outer Banks ticked off all three criterias, and the rest is history.

December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers took the first powered, sustained and controller airplane flight ever.

Today the Wright Brothers National Memorial , at the Outer Banks spot where it once happened, celebrates the huge feat. Learn all there’s to know about the achievement, or just visualize the first flight ever.

The Washington DC to Florida drive is a journey through the American South. In Wilmington, on the Atlantic Ocean but slightly off the radar, you can’t miss that. The city boasts both rich history and southern charm.

Tour the historic Bellamy Mansion

Not many hours from Washington DC you already appear to be in the Deep South. Welcome to Wilmington Historic District, a delightful place to park your car.

Wilmington’s historic downtown area encompasses hundreds of historic buildings and sites. Around every corner there’s something interesting to explore.

But one place that stands out, where you need to stop for a while, is the Bellamy Mansion . It was built as the Civil War was about to unfold, and every inch of it has a story to tell.

Touring the Bellamy Mansion adds unique perspectives to a Wilmington visit.

A few blocks west of the Bellamy Mansion the calming Cape Fear River flows. Wilmington Riverwalk, dotted with restaurants and bars, is a great spot to recharge before the Washington DC to Miami road trip continues.

Let the beach bum loose at Wrightsville Beach

Wrightsville Beach offers a welcome contrast to the history-filled streets of Wilmington. Here, less than 10 miles (16 km) from Wilmington Historic District, you can live your best beach life.

Is there a sweeter combo than history and beaches?

The soft Wrightsville dunes are treasured by sunbathers, while its wild Atlantic waves attract surfers from far and wide.

At the island’s southern end you find its most iconic views. There the landmark Crystal Pier shoots out into the Atlantic Ocean, offering spectacular perspectives of the salty surroundings.

Additional stop: South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach is an addition to the itinerary that appeals to the beach bum. Roughly halfway between Wilmington and Charleston the city is a hub for joy in the sand and sun.

4. Charleston, SC

  • Driving distance:  176 mi / 283 km
  • Driving time:  3.5 h

The coastal Lowcountry region presents a world of islands, rivers and antebellum homes. Its biggest component Charleston is for its appreciated characteristics often referred to as America’s favorite city.

Stroll the inviting Battery

Charleston Historic District is filled with history to such a degree that it appears like a huge open-air museum. One that also has a fun ambience.

Its foundation, providing safety for the city through centuries, is the Battery. The seawall, named for its Civil War artillery battery, carefully follows the southern shores of Charleston.

As the Battery also functions as a promenade, it’s a place where the past and present stunningly intersect.

The Battery is a meeting point for locals and visitors alike. On the historic promenade, surrounded by proud palm trees and colorful antebellum homes, it’s easy to see why Charleston is called America’s favorite city.

Enter eminent plantations

Several of the most renowned American plantations are located in the Charleston area. It’s truly a golden opportunity for the DC to Miami drive.

By Ashley River three historic plantations line up: Drayton Hall , Magnolia Plantation and Middleton Place .

These plantations offer glimpses of a world that no longer exists. Some parts are delightful, while the darker plantation chapters make you shudder.

Prepare for a multifaceted experience.

Additional stops: The Lowcountry is a road trip adventure on its own. Charleston and Savannah are the region’s two biggest cities, but there’s much more to explore in between. Impeccable additional stops as you road trip the Lowcountry include Hilton Head Island, Beaufort and Kiawah Island.

5. Savannah, GA

  • Driving distance:  107 mi / 172 km
  • Driving time:  2 h

Georgia’s Savannah welcomes you to the southern end of the Lowcountry. Its huge oaks, cozily covered in Spanish moss, and concentration of antebellum homes offer the perfect setting for a good old time.

Have a blast on River Street

Savannah, and the entire American South, is unique in the way it welcomes visitors. Its overwhelming warmth and kindness has a name: southern hospitality.

As you walk Savannah’s River Street, you can feel it on your skin. An inviting ambience radiates out from the many eateries and watering holes that line Savannah River.

Savannah’s waterfront is an excellent location for a night out.

But for quieter moments just stroll deeper into Savannah’s historic downtown. There the moss-covered oaks, antebellum homes and jaw-dropping monuments continue to show you a good time.

Learn at Fort Pulaski

Savannah is located upriver from the Atlantic Ocean. If you head east, towards the open ocean, you encounter several Lowcountry islands.

On one of them, Cockspur Island, Fort Pulaski impressively stands. The fort represents a turning point in American military history.

Fort Pulaski’s thick brick walls was thought to protect it from attacks. However, with revolutionary rifled artillery the Union managed to breach its wall an April’s day in 1862.

Learning about Fort Pulaski’s history is intriguing.

Still history isn’t this stop’s only draw. Fort Pulaski National Monument, covering most of Cockspur Island and the adjacent McQueens Island, also showcases prime Lowcountry nature.

6. Amelia Island, FL

  • Driving distance:  127 mi / 204 km

It’s time to exit the highway just 10 miles (16 km) after crossing the Florida-Georgia state line. Amelia Island is a hidden treasure up in the very northeastern corner of Florida.

Explore Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach is the town on Amelia Island. It’s a unique place to celebrate that you have arrived in Florida.

Overlooking Amelia River, Fernandina Historic District holds more than 50 blocks from the late 1800s and early 1900s. The striking collection of Victorian-era structures is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Homes, businesses and churches form a complete downtown area that appears to have frozen in time.

Centre Street is its main hub of activiy. There restaurants, bars and shops offer timeless experiences. As you explore the area, you might ask yourself if this really is the 21st century.

Look back on Georgia

Fort Clinch State Park covers the northernmost part of Amelia Island. Above all the park is home to the well preserved Fort Clinch, another historic highlight on the itinerary.

The strategic position of Fort Clinch is apparent. Just across St. Mary’s River the neighboring Cumberland Island is Georgia territory.

Once upon a time the possession of Fort Clinch was crucial.

But if you paid attention during your Fort Pulaski stop, you might already know what eventually retired Fort Clinch. The two East Coast strongholds, one in Georgia and one in Florida, faced similar destinies.

  • Driving time:  3 h

Orlando is the undisputed theme park capital. So if you’re up for some theme park fun, make sure to include the Central Florida city on your Washington DC to Miami road trip.

Make dreams come true at Disney

Disney World has provided entertainment to Orlando visitors since 1971. It’s a complex that has become both an Orlando and Florida symbol.

Here meet and greets make dreams come true every day. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck are just a few of the many favorite characters who welcome you to the magical world of Disney.

Disney World is the ultimate stop on a family road trip, at least if you ask the kiddos.

But it’s not only a happy place for younger roadtrippers. With four different theme parks, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom, there’s something for everyone at Disney.

Driving to florida: washington, d.c. to miami.

By Kevin McGeever

The road trip vacation destination is Miami , easily one of the most up-tempo, multi-lingual, caffeinated places on the planet.

From Washington, D.C., no slouch in the Fast Pace Dept., the drive is more than 1,000 high-speed (and sometimes high-intensity) miles on Interstate 95.

The road-tripper’s reflex will be to push on -- Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and then … Florida! Yes! Stop at the Welcome Center for some perfunctory calisthenics and a free orange juice and get back on the road. We are so close!

Well, not really. Save your exclamation points. More than a third of the drive is left, roughly 400 miles of Florida’s Atlantic seaboard. But I’m here to advise you: That’s a good thing.

Rather than ping-ponging from one energetic global capital to another, imagine … - a beach and a book and nary a human being or building on the 24 unsullied miles of Canaveral National Seashore ; - a window seat at 15 mph to the songbirds, seabirds, and raptors along the Black Point Drive Loop at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge ; - an endless view of lightly toasted sand and blue-green surf from the saddle of a horse on Hutchinson Island ; - a solitary kayak to nowhere through the basin marsh that predates modern Florida at Savannas Preserve State Park ; - an upper-deck seat and a colorful cocktail on a tour of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways, yachts, and mansions aboard the Jungle Queen . There are so many things to do on your Florida vacation, so many reasons to take your time. You will be awestruck and at once prompted to go quiet, to hear yourself breathe, to R-E-L-A-X.

The Anastasia limestone shoreline of Blowing Rocks Preserve provides a daily visual drama when the incoming Atlantic surf explodes upward through the nooks and crannies.

The Anastasia limestone shoreline of Blowing Rocks Preserve provides a daily visual drama when the incoming Atlantic surf explodes upward through the nooks and crannies.

- Peter W. Cross

There are beaches …

The entirety of the Atlantic coastline is within reach of I-95. The constant blessings of sunshine and surf leave the Jacksonville beaches shining like a freshly scrubbed floor; or radiating warmth from the cinnamon sands of Flagler Beach ; or exploding sea spray through the porous limestone crannies at Blowing Rocks Preserve .

There are scenic highways …

Eleven of Florida’s 26 designated scenic highways are worthy of a side trip along the way. In a perfect world, you will cruise the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway or the Ormond Scenic Loop or the Florida Keys Scenic Highway with the ragtop down and the love of your life within arm’s reach.

There are state and national parks …

The Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve is the 6,000-year-old home of the long-ago native Americans who were the original Floridians. Within the same preserve, American Beach was once an exclusive beach access for African-Americans restricted by segregationist Florida.

At the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Melbourne Beach , nesting sea turtles are the annual guests of honor. Bonnie Gross wrote for VISIT FLORIDA: “(After) digging a hole a foot or two deep with her hind flippers, the turtle starts filling the nest with soft-shelled eggs the size of table tennis balls. She refills the nest with sand and heads back into the ocean. The whole process takes 30 to 60 minutes. ... Two months later, the eggs hatch and scores of tiny turtles emerge from the sand at night and clamber into the water.”

There are cities …

Jacksonville , the first big city on your journey through Florida, also happens to be the largest city (in land area) in the contiguous 48 states.

There is room to roam here: 400-plus city, county, state, and national parks ; 1,100 miles of navigable waterways; 22 miles of beaches; and, between the Atlantic Ocean, St. Johns River , and Intracoastal Waterway, more shoreline than any other city in America.

The water links thriving neighborhoods ( Riverside , Five Points , Downtown ) and arts venues ( Cummer , MOSH , Center for the Performing Arts ) and the Jax Ale Trail .

Forty-five minutes south of America’s biggest city is America’s oldest city, St. Augustine , settled by the Spanish in 1565. Centuries-old relics of European colonization such as Castillo de San Marcos and Fort Matanzas are national park sites.

The Florida tourism story has origins here. Henry Flagler , the Standard Oil industrialist, started the East Coast Railway in northeast Florida in 1885 and the local college and its architectural centerpiece bear his name.

St. Augustine also was an ugly flash point for race discrimination and is now a Florida stop on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail . Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Andrew Young, and other Southern Christian Leadership Conference heroes often found safe haven in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood.

Daytona Beach is a birthplace of American auto racing and the Speedway is an American sports shrine worthy of sharing a sentence with Indy’s Brickyard, baseball’s Fenway Park and Wrigley Field, and Madison Square Garden. The racing began on the firm beach sand in 1903 and ultimately led to the formation of NASCAR.

Kennedy Space Center has been the world’s launchpad for manned space flight for 60 years. The names are iconic and familiar to generations: Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Atlantis, and now SpaceX. At the Kennedy Visitors Center , you can stroll through a garden of rockets or watch one rise into the blue, you can meet an astronaut and see if you have the right stuff to land a space shuttle.

Stuart is the Sailfish Capital of the World . Offshore in the Atlantic, on the edge of the Gulf Stream, an underwater banquet table attracts these spectacular sport fish. “They’re faster than a shark. They’re afraid of nothing,” outdoorsman and native Floridian Terry Gibson told VISIT FLORIDA. “Their sails come out of the water and they are so fast, it sounds like the tearing of a sheet.” What’s more, “when they get excited, they change colors like a disco ball: purple, blue, gold, brown.”

The Palm Beaches offer luxury ( The Breakers , Worth Avenue , PGA National) and the Florida beaches (Delray, Boynton, Lake Worth, and Boca Raton) and the wild outdoors ( Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge , Lake Okeechobee).

Downtown West Palm Beach touts four retail and entertainment districts: Clematis Street , CityPlace , Northwood Village, and Antique Row .

Fort Lauderdale is a vacation unto itself. Aptly named “the Venice of America,” Lauderdale has 165 miles of navigable waterways. A boat tour -- or, for the more ambitious, a paddleboard -- is a great way to see the city and its waterfront neighborhoods. Or follow the red brick road of the Riverwalk , the landscaped park, to the Arts and Entertainment District .

Diversity is celebrated in every walk of life here: - to the west, take an airboat ride in the Everglades , the legendary River of Grass. - to the north, Wilton Manors is the civic heart of South Florida’s LGBTQ+ community. - to the east, on Fort Lauderdale Beach , the stark white wave wall defines the promenade that parallels the sand and the Atlantic Ocean. - to the south, Hollywood’s Broadwalk (note the spelling) is one of the most visually inspiring strolls (or rides) in America. After the walk, cross the barrier island for a waterfront burger at Le Tub.

Sailing off Miami

A sailboat off the coast of Miami is a treat for the eyes.

WELCOME TO MIAMI

Just say the name -- Miami -- and the mind summons limitless possibilities: the food and culture of iconic neighborhoods; world-class arts and performance venues; and access to Atlantic beaches, underwater wonders, and North America’s largest subtropical wilderness.

The names are no less legendary: Little Havana and Overtown ; South Beach , Coconut Grove , and Coral Gables ; Biltmore , Fontainebleau , Eden Roc , and Intercontinental ; Vizcaya and Deering ; Art Basel and Art Deco .

Neighborhoods

- Overtown. From miamiandbeaches.com: “Once known as the ‘Broadway of the South,’ Overtown was a mecca for popular nightclubs and legendary performers such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Josephine Baker. Specialty stores, boutiques and soul food restaurants reflect the area’s rich culture with Southern and island influences.” - Wynwood. The rebirth of the Miami warehouse district began with murals and graffiti. It’s so much more today. Again, from miamiandbeaches.com: “There are more than 70 galleries and museums, dozens of new restaurants and bars, and hundreds of companies, creators, and innovators working in a place that just feels alive.” - Little Havana. Calle Ocho is where Miami’s Cuban exile experience began. Sip cafecito and eat guava and cheese pastelitos at Versailles. Take your Cuban sandwich to Domino Park and watch the furious action. And after the sun sets, let your hips sway to the beat at Ball and Chain .

The Arts and the Performers

- Of Perez Art Museum Miami , Scott Barnet wrote for VISIT FLORIDA: “The permanent collection and rotating exhibits here draw heavily upon the works of Latin American and Caribbean artists and strive to reflect Miami’s geographic and cultural links. And the building, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, stands as a work of art in itself.” - The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum “provides various pathways of discovery as you wind your way through its white curving exterior, with Escher-like stairways and an exposed stack of elevators connecting six levels of scientific activity.

South Florida’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean inspired the massive aquarium, affectionately known as the ‘martini glass,’ a design in the round that serves as the museum’s central feature. The 500,000-gallon aquarium can be viewed from above, around its sides and even from below -- The Deep -- with a 30-foot wide Oculus lens .” - Of the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts Saundra Amrhein wrote: “The Center and its two massive buildings straddle Biscayne Boulevard like enormous ships anchored at a dock. … On the north side of downtown Miami, the Center sits in the middle of a once-blighted corridor that is exploding with development.” - Big cities have big-time sports. Miami has baseball’s Marlins , basketball’s Heat , football’s Dolphins , hockey’s Panthers , soccer’s Inter Miami CF , plus multiple major universities.

The Great Outdoors

- Neighboring cosmopolitan Miami is the Everglades National Park, the subtropical wilderness that is home to the endangered Florida panther , a thriving alligator population , and the unconquered Miccosukee tribe. The River of Grass is best explored by airboat or brave swamp walkers . - Biscayne National Park is a snorkeler’s playground that includes the northern portion of the world's third-largest coral reef system.

The Beaches

- South Beach is one of the most stunning stretches of coast on the planet. Farther north is Haulover Park, Florida’s best-known public nude beach . - More beaches: Enjoy Miami's Beaches (miamiandbeaches.com)

AND IF YOU’RE THIS FAR SOUTH … THE FLORIDA KEYS

Oh, that drive.

- The Florida Keys Highway, more familiar to locals as the Overseas Highway , is one of America’s premier scenic drives : 106 miles of “screensaver photos so blindingly gorgeous that they hardly look real.”

Key Largo - Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is America’s first underwater park, a snorkeler’s paradise of marine life and a bucket-list selfie with Christ of the Abyss.

Islamorada - This is the Sportfishing Capital of the World. But activities under, above or near the water are available here 24 hours a day. For a land-based adrenalin rush, dangle a minnow from the dock at Robbie’s and watch a 6-foot tarpon engulf the free meal and your helping hand.

Key West - At 24 degrees 33 minutes north latitude and 81 degrees 45 minutes, you have reached the southernmost point in the United States. Key West also is arguably the most bohemian destination in America , a visual feast of gay pride, six-toed cats, Hemingway lookalikes , neighborhood roosters, and Mallory Square sunsets.

The best stops on a road trip from DC to Florida

When I was a child, my family drove to Miami from Washington, D.C. every summer. We’d always divide the 15-hour drive into two days with Florida alone taking up most of the second day.

As fate would have it, I married a Cuban-American from Florida. This means that we go to Miami at least twice a year and still vacation with my family on Miami Beach every August. Usually we fly but this summer, we opted to take a road trip from DC to Florida and explore the South East a bit.

Our journey took us to St. Simons Island, Georgia, Miami, Florida, Key Largo and Key West in the Florida Keys. It was a long trip but we survived and had fun exploring this beautiful coast together.

Road trip from DC to Florida

If you have longer then I’d highly recommend adding some more stops to your road trip itinerary. This slice of the country is home to significant historical sites and some beautiful landscapes. Other places to add to your itinerary include:

Richmond, Virginia . This is one of the best stops along the I-95. The Virginia State Capitol Building was designed by Thomas Jefferson and features the oldest Greek columns in the United States. Also in Virginia is Williamsburg, the best preserved colonial town in the country.

Beaufort is another destination worth spending some time in. Located on Port Royal Island, one of South Carolina’s Coastal Sea Islands, it’s a charming place to while away the days and the sunsets are sublime.

The Outer Banks , in North Carolina, are another great place to stop on this Washington to Florida drive. Expect nothing more than beautiful, unspoiled beaches, charming villages and plenty of outdoor activities.

For hiking opportunities you have the Blue Ridge Parkwa y that spans 469 miles from Virginia to Cherokee in North Carolina. Taking some time out somewhere like Pigeon Forge in the Smoky Mountains (part of the Blue Ridge Mountains) will be a small detour but well worth it.

Unfortunately, time didn’t allow us to add these stops to our DC to Florida drive, hopefully next time!

Day 1: Washington DC – St Simons Island, GA

Road trip from DC to Florida

The drive from Washington DC to St Simons Island in Georgia is a long one, some 656 miles. It takes about 10 hours to drive – which is why I recommend breaking up the trip if you can. Given that we couldn’t explore the east coast, we choose two good pit stops instead.

The first place we stopped was South of the Border , the quirky, Mexican-themed divide between North and South Carolina. The large billboards placed along the border on Interstate 95 may have seen better days but it’s still a good photo op and the kids enjoyed it.

The second place we stopped was Florence in South Carolina . This is a really lovely city and well worth an overnight stay if you have time. There’s a lively arts and culture scene, some wonderful food options and charming Southern hospitality.

The thing my kids loved the most about Florence, however, was  Bruster’s Real Ice Cream . You can order from an old fashioned window or even drive thru.

Road trip from DC to Florida

Overnight: St. Simons Island, Georgia

Our first overnight stop was St. Simons Island , GA. The largest of Georgia’s illustrious Golden Isles, St. Simons is a picturesque seaside resort with family friendly beaches, tons of outdoor activities, fun shops and tasty restaurants.

Because I’m a stickler for learning about the history of places we visit, I made sure our family went on a Lighthouse Trolley tour . The tour was scheduled to last 90 minutes but actually ran over two hours! The kids took a little nap but my husband and I had a great time and feel like we definitely got a great history lesson about the island.

Road trip from DC to Florida

Where to stay in St Simons Island

One of the things we loved most about St. Simons Island, GA. was the King and Prince Resort . Our room had a view of the beautiful beaches. We went for a long walk during low tide while the kids splashed each other and took dips when they got hot. It was the perfect way to get rid of energy from being cooped up in the car.

Day 2: St Simons Island – Miami

Road trip from DC to Florida

From St Simons we continued our drive to Florida from DC along the I-95. This drive is about 430 miles and takes around 7 hours. There are  lots of places you can stop in Florida along the way; this is a long state to drive from North to South so it’s definitely worth breaking up the journey.

We chose to stop at the Florida Welcome Centre on the I-95 and picked up some freshly squeezed orange juice. If you drive about an hour further south you’ll hit St Augustine , which is a wonderful stop for a day trip or longer. Pretty St Augustine is the oldest city in the US, home to Spanish colonial architecture and some excellent beaches.

Our second pit stop was in  La Carreta in Miami to eat good, reasonable and authentic Cuban food.

Overnight: Miami

The drive from St. Simons to Miami was a good nine hours. It’s a long haul but mentally knowing we were beach bound helped get us through it! In Miami, we split our time between Miami Beach and the city itself.

Miami with kids is a lot of fun and you can spend days – or even weeks – enjoying everything on offer. From Cuban croquetas to Colombian carimañolas , there are vast food options to satisfy even the pickiest of palettes. There are many family-friendly beaches too.

Road trip from DC to Florida

Where to stay in Miami with kids

The Acqualina Resort & Spa is a super kid-friendly, luxury seaside sanctuary located in Sunny Isles Beach between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale. Our room was on the twenty third floor so we had a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Kids aged five to twelve can try the hotel’s Aquamarine Day Camp that teaches children about the sea through educational activities. I walked into Acqualina and was afraid it might be too stuffy for our little ones but nothing could be further from the truth. From the foosball table by the pools to the gelato bar near the lobby, this resort is a must for any family visiting Miami Beach.

Day 3: Miami – Key Largo

Road trip from DC to Florida

Leaving Miami we got on the Highway 1 to drive to the Florida Keys. U.S. 1 is a one lane road so you have no choice but to sit back and enjoy the beautiful views that lie ahead.

Our first stop was Key Largo , about 60 miles south of Miami proper. We opted to spend the night here so we could enjoy the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . This is the first undersea park in North America and is made up of approximately 70 nautical square miles. The coral reefs are spectacular and you can enjoy them either via a glass-bottom boat tour or by getting in the water and scuba diving or snorkelling.

Overnight  Key Largo

In Key Largo, we stayed at the  Ocean Pointe Suites . We had a kitchenette, pool and even a little private beach which is not always a given in the Keys.

Day 4: Key Largo – Key West

Road trip from DC to Florida

It takes just two hours to drive from Key Largo to Key West along U.S. 1. Key West is Florida’s southernmost point and lies just 90 miles north of Cuba.

Key West is a fun, quirky place with lots of Spanish and Caribbean influence. Don’t be surprised to see roosters walking on the streets! Tin-roofed conch houses were once home to Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Frost and Jimmy Buffett.

In downtown Key West, the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum is well worth a visit. Containing an extensive collection of artefacts from ancient shipwrecks, this is a must see for any family with tiny pirates.

The Ernest Hemingway House and Museum was the famous author’s home, in Key West, from 1931 to 1939. A U.S. National historic landmark, the house is still populated by six- and seven-toed cats that are descendants of Hemingway’s cats.

This post details lots of fun things to do in Key West with kids .

Road trip from DC to Florida

Where to stay in Key West, Florida Keys

We opted for the new Hilton Garden Inn . This property is right at the entrance of the island. It’s not right smack in the middle of everything but that might be a better option for families that don’t want to deal with the noise or business of Key West at nighttime. They do have a shuttle that takes you to historic Key West.

La Carreta, heck yes! Great choice. I like to drive between South Florida and DC every other year or so but I rarely touch I-95. I love to find cool smaller roads. Then again, I am not on a schedule and do not have the kids with me. Nice information!

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

nothing Delta could do... the person sitting next to me was huge and overflowing into my seat

Crew was great! I need wheelchair assistance and they knew who I was and updated me that my chair was on its way and to just hang tight. There was some turbulence but the captain announced we would be going thru it and he handled the plane well. Landing was soft and his.

Aircraft very cramped. Check-in was great with an agent helping us. Food was almost non-existent. Pre-flight went well once I got the app reloaded on my phone since we don’t fly much anymore.

I like that it got us where we were going. Everything else needed work. It was 1/2 hour late and we took off an hour late. The plane had to be cleaned and the disabled loaded on board before we could take off which took forever and then we sat at the terminal FOREVER before we took off. The ride was so bumpy that they couldn’t serve drinks and snack but to about 1/2 the plane. Seriously we should have flown out of Fort Lauderdale. We probably would’ve gotten home several hours earlier.

Flight was on time, the staff was personable & professional, & the plane arrived on time.

Flight was great. DELTA did a fantastic job! FLL airport was chaotic!

You lost my luggage!!! How frustrating!!! Now they can’t find one of our bags!!!! I really don’t have time for this!!!

Fast boarding and exit. Different snacks other than almonds and sun chips.

It got me where I needed it to; not much more. It had no competition so that was why I chose it.

Plane didn’t even make it off the ground. We all had to get off and walk to a different terminal (lots of confusion) to get on a different plane. Landed fairly late, connections missed.

Boarding was friendly and quick. While the plane model was older with no live tv, the entertainment was full of movies and tv shows. All food was available. Pilots were very communicative with status of the flight. Flight landed on time.

Crowded flight, but upbeat and kind crew. Pilot greeted us at door, flight attendant thanked a number of “special” passengers for their business, another addressed an eight-year old boy as “young man.” United obviously trying to up their game, but though all of that is nice and notable, flying still feels like moving along a human assembly line, being herded into one small space after another (boarding areas with too few seats, planes with limited personal space, shuttles (IAD) packed too full.

It was ok until we got to DC and I wanted to use my United Club pass and the snobbish receptionist said that they don’t take one pass. It took me everything itch of patience not to tell her off

Food choice was poor and we had to buy on board snacks.

We were offer chocolate cookies , not everyone eat chocolate. Thank you

Seat didn't recline all the way back. Very uncomfortable flight for 8 hours. The turbulence eliminated snack and food stops

Nothing exceptional but all good. Business class seats are like the domestic Mint class on Jet Blue. Comfortable but not exceptional. Food is good but not superb. Flight attendants were better than US carriers but that is to be expected. However, not the caliber of Asian or Middle Eastern airlines. Very Lufthansa like but Lufthansa has slightly better seats, even though they are hardly best in class

Lost luggage again. Our second trip to Mykonos, and 2nd time no luggage.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Horrible people at the gate, they force me to check in my carry on, even thought no one behind me has to do it. I had to get out of the airport in NY to get my bag and go thru security again on my way to Honk Kong. The worst part is the employee threatened me with loosing the flights if don’t comply.

The flight was great until towards the end when the flight attendant read an excessively long commercial for purchasing an american airlines credit card. The worst part is that we are doing a lot of traveling this year so i was actually interested in getting the credit card, but I was so annoyed with the long commercial that I completely dismissed the flight attendant bringing around the information. Next time, keep the sales pitch to 10 seconds and then pass around the brochures!!

Horrible. Flight was delayed and very bumpy. I was super unhappy

The agents at the gate were rude. The stwards were pleasant. The seats were comfortable. The tray table had crumbs on it. A passenger talked constantlt and very loudly for the entire flight annoying many passengers. The stewards did not ask her to speak in a lower voice but my travel partner did.

Literally the worst experience ever and I had my service dog with me. Flight was supposed to leave at 1:51 PM but the plane arrived late. They boarded us around 3 PM and kept us on the plane for an hour saying that due to weather conditions in Miami, we could not takeoff yet. After waiting for an hour, they deplaned. And then they will not give us our bags back that we could just leave and schedule for another flight. Every hour they kept updating saying we have to wait another hour without any explanation as to what was going on. Eventually, I went to customer service to change my ticket, but by the time I made it to the front of the line, they started boarding my flight again. And then when we got onto the flight, they said there were two flight attendants That were past their shift. They kept us on the plane for about another 40 minutes until they told us they had no other flight attendance and had to deplane again. Then I gave us hotel vouchers and told us we would be on a flight at 6 AM the next day. At this point it is about 9 PM. I get to the hotel with my dog, who hasn’t been able to go potty for about eight hours. When I arrived at the hotel, I got a text alert saying my flight has been canceled at 6 AM and they moved past to 5 AM, however the hotel shuttle doesn’t leave early enough to make it to the airport for 5 AM flight. So me and some other passengers got a cab after about three hours of sleep to get back to the airport. This was the worst experience ever.

One of the worst flights I have ever taken Delayed over an hour without communication from the crew; very scary Entertainment not working Crew NASTY cabin cold

May never fly American again Delay in take off WITHOUT EXPLANATION Cabin freezing Crew NASTY entertainment did not work entire flight

Plane felt so crowded and tightly packed. The chair itself was not comfortable.

Flight was delayed due to crew not being there, besides that it was a normal flight.

Spirit canceled the flight in March and never notified me!

Seats suck, not enough room, overcrowded planes, hectic situation all together.

I do not like the customer service, I had an emergency and needed to cancel a pet reservation right after I had booked it and they would not do anything but issue a credit. I haven't flown in years as I have 7 kids and don't have spare time. I want my $125 back on my card please

I paid just under 200 for flight and luggage, then paid 200 to change the flight, then paid 100 for a carry on. Then the cancelled the flight. Of the 500 I spent they refunded 250. I bought a delta flight for 270 never flew with spirit, but spirit kept 250, not even refunding the 100 for the carry on though they cancelled the flight (for weather on a day with only a slight rain ).

Flight attendants heavily pushed their affinity credit card. Very annoying

On time and fast. Overall it was a pleasant experience.

The seat are terrible. Don’t even think of sleeping on a Spirit flight. The kids that run the plane aka flight attendants are pretty rude and straight forward. They get the job done but without class.

I had a death in my family and booked my flight on Spirit. My flight was cancelled the morning of my flight, no explanation, no help to rebook, nobody to talk to. The next available flight was 2days later !!!! Terrible airline, will NEVER fly with them again!

Flight was canceled. Knew there was weather, and were notified of 20 min delayed, and then suddenly canceled. Next reschedule was for 2 days. No help other than to refund. Thankfully full refund and appreciate that. I appreciate discounted airline but felt they could've done more for customer inconvenience.

They seemingly have no respect for their customers, on any level. Avoid flying spirit, they will bump you to another flight without thinking twice so they can sell your seat, no joke.

Crew members are very rude and not cooperate with passengers.

30 minute delay due to boarding and settling of a family.

I am HIGHLY unhappy with the amount of money I spent on the flight. Paid in advance only to find the flight at a discount price a week or so before the flight. I will not fly frontier again and have bad mouthed your business since to anyone I have spoken with about flying (which has been many a people). Crew was mediocre and instead of moving me to a spot where I could gain some leg room they sat their flight attendant there. Won’t be flying frontier in the future.

Well, I didn’t have food! So NA wasn’t an option. I’ll be back!

First time flying with Frontier . From buying tickets ,getting boarding pass and boarding plane was super easy. Definitely would fly again with Frontier .

Our flight was on time and unremarkable which I'm grateful for, as it is not the norm traveling these days. Frontier is a low-cost carrier and it really shows when compared to other "normal" carriers. They don't even give you water during the flight. The coach seats are decent, however it was not as clean as it should be. We had crumbs all over the floor by our seats.

They lost my baggage on my connection flight, it’s been 24 hours since I put my claim in and still no update on my bags.

they charge too much when you arrive in the air port

The flight was canceled, then delayed twice, we were moved gates twice. Short staff at the counter and check in. We waited for our flight 9 hours. Will never use Frontier ever again, or Spirit.

The flight was delayed 1 hour. The Seats are the worst most uncomfortable chairs I have ever sat in. I have folding chairs in my Garage that are more comfortable.

Fly business class to Rio de Janeiro from Miami and Washington, DC, from $1,563

Y ou can save a decent amount of money right now on business-class travel to Brazil via Copa Airlines . A new fare sale has flights to Rio de Janeiro from Miami and Washington, D.C., at uncommonly low prices. Rio has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the world's greatest party cities, not to mention it's home to two iconic beaches: Copacabana and Ipanema. So, if you've been considering heading to South America, keep reading.

Aside from the great prices, this deal is enticing because the travel window is unusually wide. We found discounted flights from May until March 2025. Keep in mind that almost all the itineraries include layovers in Panama, but they are all reasonable in length. Also, some routes offer lie-flat seats on just one segment of the itinerary.

Deal basics

Airline : Copa Airlines

Routes : Round-trip in business class from Miami International Airport (MIA) and Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C., to Rio de Janeiro's Tom Jobim International Airport (GIG)

How to book : Browse Google Flights, then book directly with the airline

Travel dates : Availability from May through March; varies by route

Sample flights

Availability for discounted business-class fares from Miami to Rio de Janeiro was wide open from August until December. Copa has round-trip itineraries from MIA to GIG for $1,563.

Check out this Copa itinerary we found from Miami to Rio in December.

Google Flights says this is a massive discount from normal prices for this route during the holiday season.

Rio's next Carnival celebration takes place Feb. 28 through March 8, 2025. If you're interested in being part of the iconic festival, you can book round-trip business class to land in Brazil right before the fun begins for less than $2,000. That's an excellent price, especially considering how big an event Carnival is. Also, both legs of the return flight get you a lie-flat seat.

The discounts are just as easy to find for flights out of our nation's capital. This business-class itinerary from IAD to GIG for Carnival is available for just $2,254. Like the Miami itinerary, both legs of the return journey are with a lie-flat seat.

Want to escape the Northeast's harsh winter but aren't keen on dealing with the massive crowds at Carnival? That's not a problem, as the same $2,254 price is available for a round-trip flight from Washington to Rio in January.

We told you earlier that this deal's availability is unusually generous. The sale price on Washington-to-Rio flights can also be found for travel across August and September.
