Why Book your Spanish Hike with Macs?

Spanish food is absolutely delicious! Here are a few of our favorite dishes:

Jamón Iberico: Rich cured pork found in the south-western Aracena region of Spain.

Esqueixada: A tasty salad of shredded cod, tomatoes, and olives popular in Catalonia and Costa Brava

Pulpo a Feira: Boiled octopus seasoned with sweet and salty paprika - a Galician specialty on the Camino Frances

Tapas: Gambas al ajillo (fresh shrimp with garlic and cayenne pepper) and Patatas Bravas (fried potatoes in a spicy tomato sauce)

Hidden Gems of Spain: Food

Besides the iconic Camino de Santiago, Spain has a plethora of other hiking areas:

Costa Brava and Catalonia – With Barcelona at its heart, this region of Spain combines superb hiking trails and delicious food options. The rocky coast winds down the Mediterranean revealing tranquil hidden coves, whitewashed villages, and outstanding seafood. Journey into the mountains for more rural trails, stunning views, rustic food, and friendly welcomes. Cava and Priorat were created here, so make sure to enjoy a glass or two at the end of the day if you please!

Andalucia – Consider Andalucia to escape the cold during the winter. The location of the southern coastal town makes it too hot to hike in the summer, but in the other months is a hiking paradise. Enjoy trails winding through whitewashed hilltop villages, and along dramatic, untouched coastlines. Stop in Granada and Seville to experience two of Spain’s great cities deep rooted in culture.

Basque Country – Located in the far north, expect a gastronomic feast. San Sebastian is worth visiting on its own, but the Camino del Norte links it with Bilbao and creates a food focused spiritual journey. Pass through many fishing villages, amazing scenery and friendly people in this wonderful area of Spain.

Canary Islands - Although far from Spain, the Spanish culture does not fade in these isolated islands off the coast of Africa. Each island has its own charm: from the botanic wonderland of La Gomera to the stark volcanic beauty of Tenerife. Hike in November to April for comfortable temperatures on the enchanting trails.

Balearic Islands – Discover a completely different side of Ibiza through the secret hiking trails of the White Isle. In Mallorca, stay in hidden retreats and hike on beautiful coasts, or challenge yourself through the otherworldly mountains on the famous GR221 Tramontana trail.

Best Places to Hike in Spain

Every year, thousands embark on various routes to hike to Santiago de Compostela. A deep spiritual sense accompanies this journey, whether you seek it or not. Meeting fellow pilgrims, listening to their stories, and sharing your experience alongside them makes a Camino tour a transformative event.

The north coast of Spain is one less visited by holidaymakers, which makes it the perfect place to explore Spain without the crowds. What makes it even more perfect is the stunning scenery, outstandingly friendly locals and, of course, the food. The Camino del Norte is the quieter and arguably more beautiful cousin of the Camino de Santiago and this video gives you a broad overview of the first stage.

DISCOVER WHY PEOPLE CHOOSE ANDASPAIN FOR THEIR CAMINO ADVENTURE!

The greatest experience.

I would be happy to talk to anyone who is thinking about going to Spain or taking any other trip with Andaspain because it was the greatest experience for us and I cannot wait to go on another trip with you!! Thank you for all that everyone with Andaspain did to make this such a fantastic trip!! It was so well organized and planned and I just cannot say enough good complimentary things about it.

Forever changed

Andaspain Walking Adventures love what they do and it shows. They are a talented group in so many areas. They take everything to the next level. Their greatest gift is being “tour guides extraordinaire” and hopefully lifelong friends. All of us on the Feast Day Celebration 2018 – had the privilege of knowing them and having our lives enriched. They gave freely of themselves, they made us laugh, they encouraged us each day – and I am forever changed.

Excellent – Simply brilliant

The quality of the food on the trip? Excellent – (Are you kidding there is no above excellent?) Great!! Enjoyed everything from the local spots that you scoped out to the simply brilliant lunches on the trail.

I would do it again!

Thank you for your attention to all of the details. Vanessa and Ashleigh made the trip feel very personal. They cared for each and every one of us as if we were family. They brought their personal touches to the meals they prepared and arranged, to the activities in various locations, and in walking the Camino with us.

Not enough can be said

Our guides are living this trip as far as their love of the experience… without being overboard or disingenuous. I always felt they had a natural feel for our needs & their knowledge of all aspects relating to us & the Camino. The fact it was with Andaspain IS a component of the whole beautiful experience. The intimacy, comfort level, food, comraderie, professionalism.

Boutique Camino

It was exceptional in every way. I had been in many rural houses and the ones we had were the best, as well as the two hotels. The care from the two guides and “Bruce” was exceptional, as well as the group of people. There was variety and well prepared galician food!!! Loved the Picnic Salads!!! Honestly I cannot think of anything I didn’t like; always there for us tending to every detail. They spoiled us and were very knowledgeable. I am in love with Andaspain!

I will be back

The best thing about the trip – The companionship and care of the Andaspain personnel and the feeling of becoming family within our group. Your tours are excellent, every care was to be sure we were safe and cared for. I can think of no practical improvements that you could make. I highly recommend Andaspain to all I meet. It was a wonderful experience. It was great to get to know the Andaspain personnel and become friends. You make every care to make people in the group comfortable and help others along to find their way.

It was just perfect

What was the best thing about your walking tour with us? I say it was the perfect amount of “guided.” The thought of a “guided trip” made me think of being with a large group and all having to stay together. I loved that you could walk with members of the group and people you met along the way; knowing that the van would be at specific points was comforting. It was just perfect.

Very knowledgable

I would not have been able to walk the Camino without Andaspain. Fantastic. Very personable and generous with time and support; quite amazing. You worked hard for us and made it look so easy. Our group benefitted from their extensive experience with walking tours, the history and culture of Spain, and this pilgrimage in particular. Their hospitality and support helped me get the most of my pilgrimage because they managed the food and accommodation details and let me focus on putting one foot in front of the other and take in the beauty of my surroundings. It was an amazing experience. Thank you for your fantastic service.

Fun, easy going, very likeable people!

What was the best thing about your walking tour with us? The ease with which it happened and the flexibility and of course the great picnics and food choices whilst on tour. I am a fuzzy eater but always found food I liked. Also we were not forced to go out for lunch or dinner we could organise our own food even though if we wanted a booking for dinner was often made. Alex and Stefanie were great guides, dedicated to their job clearly loved the area and made sure everyone had the experience we wanted out of the Camino. They did not judge and were always jovial, calm and helpful to everyone’s whims.

A true, authentic and delightful experience!

I personally recommend Andaspain to anyone wanting a true, authentic, non- judging, cared for and delightful experience of the Camino! Being a foodie, both Alex and Stef were great guides…. to the best food spots on the Camino! Important! What was the best thing about your walking tour with us? The guides, the attention to detail, the care and attention!

They were perfect.

The whole organisation of the walk was highly professional and well thought out. Picnic food was always very yummy. – my favourite lunch. Both Stefanie and Alex were wonderful, caring and so obliging. They made every inch of Camino safe and enjoyable. Without them I doubt I would have completed the walk.

Trip of a lifetime.

From the beginning of months of preparation to the final night of dinner and fireworks in the Praza do Obradoiro, it was the most wondrous experience. Pre-trip planning was thorough but easy to follow and with immediate back-and-forth communication always available for information. There are many ways to experience the El Camino, but I can’t imagine it being better than with Andaspain. Ours was a walking tour par excellence because of Vanessa, Ashleigh, and Melissa, the most accommodating, professional, knowledgeable and efficient tour guides imaginable.

I am going to recommend Andaspain to everyone I know!

Andaspain made the entire experience so seamless and smooth. Our guides, Lily and Alex were always happy to help, offer information, support and make sure we got everything we needed. We even brought our 2 year old daughter and Andaspain made sure to have cribs at all our hotels and even found diapers when we were close to running out. It was an amazing experience and it was made better by everyone at Andaspain. The places we stayed were unbelievably beautiful, unique and complimented the Spanish/Galician region.

I hope to be back someday!!

I know constructive criticism can be helpful in bettering oneself, but I honestly can’t think of anything that could have been improved upon. The guides, Lily, Alex, and Ashleigh, were so amazing – knowledgeable, friendly, and I really enjoyed the conversations I had with all of them.Kate was really good at answering all of our questions and provided lots of good information re: the trip, what to pack, what to expect, etc. All the details seemed well-sorted, the guides were fantastic, accommodations clean and really interesting.

Another wonderful trip.

What was the best thing about your walking tour with us? The trip is fabulous and it is hard to highlight anything specific. However it is the team, the attention to detail and the expectation that any problems will be sorted quickly and with as little fuss as possible. Well organised, fun and knowledgeable guides, lovely food, amazing picnics and excellent walking. We wouldn’t consider a Camino trip with anyone else.

You guys rock!

What was the best thing about your walking tour with us? The care, attentiveness, flexibility, responsiveness, delightful and various personalities of the team and the companionship and solitude on the Camino. Absolutely. Enthusiastically. Without reservation would recommend. You guys rock! Thank you!

Never heard them say no we can’t!

I had a wonderful trip with Andaspain. Every detail was taken care of and many individualised needs were easily woven into each day without a hitch. We had delicious meals and charming accommodations each night. Our tour Guides, Vanessa & Ashleigh were just wonderful at every turn- they made each day special and worry free! Loved my week on the Camino and will definitely recommend it to friends!

Hands down, the best travel experience of my life.

Many thanks to all of you for giving me the best travel experience of my life. Already recommended the trip to several others and trying to figure out how to come back to walk with you again myself! The folks we met and the places we stayed made me feel right at home–so comfortable and friendly. Vanessa, Alex and Ashleigh were amazing and the group was so fantastic! Truly, this couldn’t have gone better!

Above all they were fun to be with!!!

What was the best thing about your walking tour with us? The ability to have an individualised tour in a group setting that allowed for flexibility in distances covered and the encouragement and support of the group leaders. Kate, Vanessa, Ashleigh and Alex were knowledgeable, enthusiastic and very professional. They were very accommodating , welcoming and genuinely involved in the participants journey. After a long, hot and tiring day it was a delight to see Ashleigh, appearing in the distance, like a mirage, coming back to see how I was doing. This act of kindness really encapsulated all of the guides genuine concern for their guests.

Going with Andaspain made it absolutely perfect!

What was the best thing about your walking tour with us? It was thoughtfully planned with the walker’s best interests in mind. Because of your familiarity with the trail, you were able to choose the best route for the day and let us know exactly what to expect along the Way. Meals and picnics, accommodations, the day’s walk with map details, were great. Having our bags in our rooms at the end of a long day was wonderful! Did we mention how awesome the guides were?? We LOVED you guys! We know you put up with a lot of stuff from your clients, and you put up with us beautifully. Each one of you enhanced our walk in ways that keep us talking and joking about our walk nearly every day. Vanessa and Alex added knowledge of Spain’s culture, landscape and language that was above and beyond what we expected. We learned so much about Spain.

Consider a Camino hike and of course Andaspain!

The experience was magical in the sense that practically everything was done for us. All we had to do was the walking. Fun, in the sense that we had an absolutely terrific team of three guides and eight pilgrims that got along fabulously with each other, and rewarding because of accomplishing our goal of reaching Santiago and getting our Compostela. Vanessa, Ashleigh and Stefanie were absolutely tops! Their can-do attitude, answering all questions, doing all things (like fixing my internet settings on my tablet) and engaging in spirited and laugh-filled conversations are memories that will never fade.

A group of people at the top of their game.

The whole trip was excellent. We had high expectations but these were well exceeded. We were so well looked after by Vanessa and Ashleigh and the fact that we had checkpoints each day where we would meet up meant the walking was nicely divided up into manageable stages. It also meant that if we needed anything e.g. snacks or water, to leave a bag or to change footwear it was easy to do that. Our favourites were meals where Vanessa ordered an interesting selection of food for the whole table so that we could try local dishes.

Beyond the call of duty!

We had a wonderful time, everything was perfect. Vanessa, Ashleigh and Alex went beyond the call of duty.

The best guide I have ever been with!

I had a really good time on this trip! Vanessa and Borja were so fun and on the ball with everything and everyone. The picnics were very enjoyable! Borja was so giving of himself to everyone and never seem to be tired! He was always upbeat and cheerful and would pop up from everywhere unexpectedly on the trail! Thank you again for your help in helping me with this trip! I can’t wait to do another trip with Andaspain!

We loved it!

We can’t say enough good things about the ease and thoughtfulness of the booking process and help and guidance along the way and Vanessa/Ashleigh’s hospitality at Tabernanova . Borja is the perfect blend of motivator, calming presence, anticipator of every possible need. He was super flexible given all of the changes due to the heat and the reality of having to manage two different groups due to ability. Meals were also incredible in quality with always something new and delicious to try. This could easily have been a transactional experience but we feel like the human experience / relationships of Andaspain is your real differentiator.

Truly does create a sense of ‘family.’

Kate is marvelously available and responsive via email and telephone. She graciously takes on making arrangements for travel matters that arise outside of the tour days. Vanessa being a part of the orientation to our Camino spoke volumes about the collegiality, shared leadership, and ‘hands on’ manner Andaspain conducts business. (Our guide) was the reason our group of 6 pilgrims bonded so quickly and remained intact as far as positive group dynamics go.

Every aspect was perfect.

My camino was an amazing experience. The accommodations were wonderful and I experienced no issues. I can’t say enough about Lorenzo. His love for the Camino was so evident as well as his genuine love for people. He gave us so much insight along the way. The picnic lunches were flavorful and delicious. Andaspain provided a memorable Camino.

Over and beyond their duties…

My experience on the Camino was great. Jorge and Lu were the best guides ever. They went over and beyond their duties to make my experience awesome. All the accommodations were perfect and unique in their own way. I don’t think I could change a thing about my experience as it was just perfect.

Magical, beautiful, spiritual, and FUN!

It was everything I hoped for and more! Jorge was a 10 out of 10 – he saw to our every need and went well above his job. His picnic lunches were fabulous and his help in ordering a restaurants was so much appreciated. (The guides) were so incredibly knowledgeable, always knew the answers to our questions. I really enjoyed the different types of accommodations – wouldn’t change a thing!

I hope our paths cross again.

Special kudos to Borja, who was congenial, organized, flexible and kind. He went out of his way for many of us. Lorenzo certainly has deep knowledge of the Camino and Spanish history and added immeasurably in that regard; his passion is contagious. We loved the food, the lodging, the support. I’m trying to hard to think of a way to improve things, but honestly—it’s not coming to me.

An exquisite experience.

Once again, you and the Andaspain team have designed and pulled off an exquisite experience. Every minute of this trip was a true pleasure! Borja and Piero are amazing and took care of every detail—they also prepared the most amazing picnic lunches!!! I’m already talking to my family about my next Camino excursion with Andaspain!!!

Explore spain on an affordable walking holiday.

Spain is famous for its sun drenched scenery, coastal views, laidback lifestyle and fascinating regional culture. Discovering Spain on a walking holiday is the best way to really understand this intriguing country.

There are many beautiful places to take an unforgettable walking tour in Spain . You can hike the Picos de Europa, walk across the Pyrenees , follow in the footsteps of Dali , experience the warm weather of the Canary Islands , and explore the unique culture and history of Granada and Andalucia on an eye opening walking trip. Plus the world famous Camino pilgrimage trails are simply begging to be walked.

Whether you prefer to go on a self guided walk or enjoy the camaraderie of a small group of like minded travellers, UTracks have a comprehensive range of affordable walking tours in Spain for you.

Here are the Best Walking Tours in Spain.

Camino de Santiago: Camino Frances

Pilgrims hiking through rural villages along the Camino Frances in Spain | Gesine Cheung

The iconic Camino de Santiago is definitely the most walked of all Spain's trails. Pilgrims have been walking the Camino for centuries and enjoying the history, spirituality, local hospitality and sense of achievement that the Camino provides.

There are many highlights of walking the Camino, as those who have already walked it will attest. The Camino Frances is the most popular route, especially the last 100km stretch from the town of Sarria to Santiago . This is because this route is the minimum distance required for pilgrims to obtain their Compostela certificate.

UTracks offers a comprehensive range of Camino experiences. There are affordable self guided walks, small group guided tours, slow paced rambler tour options, food lover's tours , luxury hotel tours, and more. We've been helping pilgrims collect their Compostela certification since 2006. You can also watch our inspiring Camino video collection .

Walking in the Picos de Europa

Picos de Europa National Park in autumn | S-Cape Travels Spain

Explore the striking Picos de Europa mountain range on this immersive self guided walking tour. This 8 day hike takes you around the stunning limestone peaks of the Picos de Europa, including the impressive Naranjo de Bulnes, and rewards hikers with magnificent views.

Highlights include spotting the native animals, such as chamois, hedgehogs and wild boards. Plus there is an abundance of wildflowers in the Picos de Europa National Park and the opportunity to sample the famous blue cheese, Queso de Cabrales.

Granada and the Alpujarras

Walk through whitewashed villages in the Alpujarras | Erin Williams

Explore the historical lands of Andalucia on the Granada and the Alpujarras walking tour . On this trip, you'll encounter Moorish villages that cling to the mountainside, enjoy sweeping views of the far-reaching plains, and discover Mediterranean vegetation framing the beautiful backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountain ranges.

Highlights of this moderately graded, self guided walking tour include visiting the magnificent grounds of the Alhambra, embracing the warm hospitality of the locals, and having the opportunity to witness flamenco shows in the captivating streets of Granada.

Majorca: Sierras and Monasteries

Trekkers walking to Cala Codolar and El Murteret, also known as Morro de Sa Vaca | John Millen

The Spanish island of Majorca sits on the Mediterranean, just off the coast of Spain. Its warm temperature lures travellers outdoors and into the sunshine, where a walking tour is the perfect activity for discovering this island.

On the Sierras and Monasteries self guided hike of Majorca , you'll encounter the rugged limestone mountain range of the Sierra de Tramontana. Although the mountain tops are bare, they reward hikers with views of valleys filled with ancient terraces of olive, orange and almond groves. You'll also spot plenty of bird life, including the rare European Black Vulture that lives in a protected bird sanctuary.

Walking highlights include reaching the peak of El Teix, exploring the 'Archduke's Trail' above Valldemossa, and enjoying the view from Massanella peak near Lluc monastery.

Walking the Island of La Gomera

Amongst the terraces, El Cercado

La Gomera is the second smallest of Spain's Canary Islands . Given its petite size, a walking tour around the island is possible and this will ensure you completely immerse yourself in island life.

Highlights include seeing the island's volcanic origins, making La Gomera's terrain unlike any other in Europe, plus you'll be mesmerised by the lush plantations of tropical and citrus fruit and succumb to the laid back lifestyles of the locals.

With UTracks, there are two self guided circular tour options, an 8 day and an 11 day walk . Both of these start and finish in the island capital of San Sebastian, with the 11 day tour allowing for some more exploration around Hermigua. There's also the Southern Trails of La Gomera hike that leads you around the beaches of Santiago and la Guancha.

Camino de Santiago: Camino del Norte

Pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Spain | Andreas Holland

Another of the famous Camino de Santiago routes is the Camino del Norte . In English, this is called the Northern Way and traces the northern coast of Spain, through glorious cities of San Sebastian, Santander and Bilbao, to reach Santiago de Compostela.

The Camino del Norte is a less walked pilgrimage trail, although no less rewarding. Pilgrims get a cooler climate to walk in and continuous coastal views follow you on your journey.

UTracks have broken the Camino del Norte into sections, from San Sebastian to Bilbao , and from Bilbao to Santander (otherwise you can walk the entire 41 day full Camino Norte !).

Footsteps of Dali

Hiking high above the Mediterranean coastline on our Footsteps of Dali tour

Follow in the footsteps of the quirky Spanish artist, Salvador Dali, on this walking tour that also takes in some of the best spots of Spain. Cross the low foothills of the Alberes, the last section of the Pyrenees before they give way to the Mediterranean sea. Stay in the charming towns of Port de la Selva, Cerbere, and the Catalan town of Llanca and feast on excellent local cuisine.

This 7 day self guided hike provides great flexibility for walkers, because on each walking day there are options to explore the coast or the mountains as you amble along the Vermillion coast.

Alto Aragon: the Spanish Pyrenees

Castillo Mayor from Nerin

Go off the beaten track in Spain and explore little walked areas of the Pyrenees on the Alto Aragon walking tour . Trek across the Aniscolo Gorge, discover the medieval town of Ainsa, and hike in Ordesa and the Monte Perdido National Park. While the natural landscape is acutely mesmerising, the food is also wonderful, as A. Brooks-Daw explains in this review:

"Good service and a great trip. Logistics went very smoothly. The food at Casa Rubén in Tella where we stayed for two nights was absolutely exceptional. We had three vegetarians in our party of five and Ruben cooked us all two incredible meals - the food here was the best of the trip."

Camino de Santiago: Camino Primitivo

Hiking along the Camino Primitivo, Spain | Andreas Holland

While the Camino Frances is the most famous of Camino de Santiago routes, the Camino Primitivo is actually thought to be the first pilgrimage route, hence its name, the Original Way.

This route was first established in the 9th Century and offers a quieter Camino experience as you walk from Oviedo to Santiago de Compostela. On this trail you get to stay in authentic villages with intimate testimonies of true Camino devotion. Perhaps it is the most genuine of pilgrim experiences these days?

There are two options with UTracks. The Full Camino Primitivo takes 17 days, or you can take in the best parts on a Highlights of the Camino Primitivo journey.

Camino de Santiago: Camino Ingles

Arriving in the beautiful city of Santiago de Compostela after completing the Camino Trail | Edwina Parsons

Befittingly, the last of our top 10 walks in Spain is the last travelled of all the Camino trails, with about 4% of pilgrims choosing this route. The Camino Ingles, or English Way , was established in the 12th century to allow for pilgrims from England to make their way overland to Santiago de Compostela. They'd land in A Coruna, and from there make their way over the classic seaside terrain.

Highlights include the quiet solitude which is integral to a proper Camino experience and also the immersion of Galician culture, as this route primarily runs through the distinct region of Galicia in northern Spain. It's an 8 day self guided walk that is truly unforgettable.

Spain walking tours

Small group walking tours to spain.

To many, holidays in Spain evoke images of sun, sea and sangria; yet this fascinating country is a treasure trove of culture and natural beauty, and as such lends itself to fantastic walking and trekking adventures. Diverse scenery awaits visitors keen to explore this remarkable country on foot, not just on the mainland but also off shore on the Balearic and Canary islands.

Mainland Spain boasts deep valleys and limestone peaks in the northern ranges. Spain’s mountain ranges are in fact the second highest in Europe after Switzerland. The impressive Pyrenees form a natural border between Spain, France and Andorra, while the more intimate, yet equally dramatic, Picos de Europa remain Spain’s best kept secret. Those with a love of gastronomy and wine will be rewarded after a busy day on foot – taste fine wines from various regions or sample the local delicacies of the Basque country or Catalunya.

Spain Pueblos Blancos

Andalucia Cultural Walking Tour

Image Gallery

If you've ever seen the movie El Cid , you know that the Moors invaded Iberia then the Spanish chased them out. Of course, that took almost 800 years—and in the process created Europe's richest and most fascinating culture. Seville is the suavest of cities. The Alhambra? The way water in all its variety is used to cool air that whispers through beautiful stone fretwork is unimaginable. The vastness of la vega, the province's plain, is truly cinematic, scattered with whitewashed villages, punctuated by ruined alcazares (fortresses), and carpeted in vineyards, swatches of gnarled olive trees and stately groves of poplar. We stay in fantastic accommodations and at one of Spain's finest 5-star hotels. And the walks—in both city and country, through mosques and Spanish palaces—are gentle revelations every step of the way. Our local guides are exceptionally well-connected, so you get introductions to families that own the olive groves and even Alhambra's resident wood inlay expert. Can you tell Andalucia is one of our favorite places on earth?

 • Meet in Seville for a leisurely stroll that takes in King Ferdinand's Alcazar and the chic shopping district.
 • Journey into the Andalucian countryside to walk among green hills to one of Los Pueblos Blancos ("the white villages").
 • Explore the clifftop town of Ronda, perched high above the Tajo Gorge.
 • Walk the banks of a lovely river and enjoy a wine tasting at a vineyard where the buildings date back to the 16th century.
 • Keep your eyes peeled for a large colony of flamingos on a walk amid the natural pillars of El Torcal National Park.
 • Join a local friend from Granada for a personally guided visit to the Alhambra and shopping in the alcaizeria.
 • Walk in fragrant forests and visit a traditional olive oil mill before arriving in Córdoba where visits include the elaborate Mesquita (mosque).
 • Marvel at an up-close flamenco performance you'll never forget.

Guided Walking Holidays

Walking Tours in Spain

Our philosophy is simple - to get out of the cities and into the countryside where you can discover the charm and beauty of the Spanish regions such as Andalusia, Pays-Basque, Ainhoa, Santiago de Compostela, the Pyrenees and the Balearic Islands. We are great believers that the journey is what matters, not the destination! All our holidays in Spain are guided - we are not there to overload you with facts and figures but discreetly share with you the wonderful places we have discovered during our "journey" .

Top places to visit & hiking trails in spain.

Explore Sierra Nevada

Sierra Nevada

Spain’s Sierra Nevada region is dominated by the spectacular Sierra Nevada mountain range. Boasting the highest elevation in continental Spain (3,479 metres above sea level), these breathtaking peaks are often snow-capped, which is where the range gets its name—Sierra Nevada literally translates to “mountain range covered in snow”. On our holidays including the Sierra Nevada region, we’ll explore picturesque hillside towns like Capileira and Pitres, soak up incredible views from Spain’s highest peak and enjoy scenic hikes through the magnificent mountainous landscape.

Visit Santiago De Compostela

Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia in north-western Spain and the end of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. The city was originally made famous in the 9th century around the shrine and burial place of Saint James the Great, now the city’s cathedral. Since the 9th century, pilgrims have travelled from around Europe to visit Santiago de Compostela and in 1985, the city’s Old Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On our holidays including Santiago de Compostela, we’ll have time to explore this famous pilgrimage site with an expert guide.

Experience The Camino De Santiago

Camino de Santiago

The Camino de Santiago is a large network of ancient pilgrimage routes stretching across Europe and leading to the tomb of St. James in north-western Spain. The Camino dates back to the 9th century, when the tomb of St. James was discovered and began to draw pilgrims from across Europe. The most famous of these pilgrimage paths is the French Way, which has served as the main route since the 10th century. Today, the Camino de Santiago has developed into a social and cultural experience as well as a pilgrimage, with over 200,000 visitors travelling the route each year.

spain walking tours

The jewel in Granada’s crown is the Alhambra, which stands at the foot of Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada. The Islamic palaces of Alhambra were built during the Nasrid dynasty for the last Muslim Emirs of Spain. Today, Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Spain’s major tourist attractions.

El Camino de Santiago or the Way of St. James is the most famous, and sacred, walking pilgrimage in the world! Millions of people walked these ancient paths for over 1,000 years, and many more dream about it! 206 Tours makes it possible for anyone who wishes to experience this incredible journey to Santiago de Compostela, and tomb of St. James.

With every town you pass through, you will be drawn closer to saints who have walked the same path before you, including St. Francis. Moments of quiet, and moments of interactions with someone new, draw you closer to God. You can relax knowing the person you are and questions you have at the start of your journey, may be different by the time you arrive in Santiago.

You will be removed from the routine of your everyday life, but will have great accommodations, meals and support. A van or small bus will also be driving parallel to the path you walk each day. Should you feel tired, need water, or medical assistance, it will be readily available to you at check point that are set up along the way.

Tourists pass through places, places pass through Pilgrims. Be a pilgrim.

What to Know Before You Go on the El Camino Pilgrimage

This is such a magnificent pilgrimage, that it is a subject of the 2010 movie directed by Emilio Estevez and starring his father Martin Sheen called ‘The Way’. This is a very interesting movie that encompasses elements of the pilgrimage that 206 Tours offers – called: The Way of St James (El Camino) – highlighting Spain’s spectacular Santiago de Compostela. The movie is based on a story of an American Father and Doctor (played by Martin Sheen) who decides to travel to Spain in order to walk the ‘El Camino’ in order to follow in the footsteps of his son (played by Emilo Estevez) who dies on this journey. If you are interested in experiencing this type of pilgrimage, be sure to register below

This morning, you will enjoy breakfast and transfer to Sarria. Sarria is located in the northwest of Spain and is noted for being the entry point to the oriental side of the region, Galicia. Your transfer will end and you will begin on foot from Foncebadon. In the eleventh century, this village was a common resting place for pilgrims on El Camino due to its hospitals, hospice, and church. Currently, the structures that have served so many are now in ruins. While in Foncebadon, you will walk to view the “Iron Cross.” This Cross is a common pausing place for pilgrims as they leave a stone at the foot of the cross to symbolize a sin or burden that they are leaving behind. Your tour continues as you leave your burdens behind and continue onward to the village nestled in the mountains, O Cebreiro. Many pilgrims pause at this site due to the Eucharistic Miracle that occurred in the year 1300. Additionally, be sure to have your cameras ready as this village is suspended 1,300 meters in the air and provides a breathtaking panoramic view. Your first walking day culminates with a delicious meal and an overnight in Sarria.

Day 4: Sarria - Portomarin (Walking Day: 15 miles | 23.5 kilometers | 35,000 steps)

Today is the day that your walking pilgrimage (El Camino) to Santiago de Compostela officially begins! With the guidance of Our Lord, and through the spirit of St. James the apostle, you will become an authentic pilgrim by journeying along the physical road, as well as, the spiritual one. Your first official day of walking will culminate in Portomarin. This town dates back to the Roman Ages and was an important halt along the route in the Middle Ages. Due to the creation of a dam in 1962, the Old Portomarin is currently underneath the Mino River. As a result of the dam creation, many of the old buildings were moved, brick by brick. Among these buildings is the Church of St. John of Jerusalem. In Medieval Times, this church was strategically set along the route of El Camino in order to protect the tomb of Santiago. At Portomarin, you will enjoy dinner followed by an overnight.

After lunch, you will leave the Lugo province and enter into the province of A Coruna. As your group continues to Arzua, you will cross the beautiful, medieval bridge over the Iso River to Ribadiso. About your trip

This pilgrimage is good for your body and soul!

About Santiago de Compostela:

The history of El Camino, the Way of St. James or St. James’ Way, often known by its Spanish name, el Camino de Santiago, is the pilgrimage to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where legend has it that the remains of the apostle, Saint James the Great, are buried. The Way of St. James has existed for over a thousand years. It was one of the most important Christian pilgrimages during medieval times. It was considered one of three pilgrimages on which a plenary indulgence could be earned; the others are the Via Francigena to Rome and the pilgrimageto Jerusalem. Legend holds that St. James’s remains were carried by boat from Jerusalem to northern Spain, where they were buried on the site that is now the city of Santiago de Compostela. There are some, however, who claim that the bodily remains at Santiago belong to Priscillian, the fourth-century Galician leader of an ascetic Christian sect, Priscillianism, who was one of the first Christian heretics to be executed.

About Spain

Saint Teresa and Saint Ingatius both hailed from Spain. Saint Teresa of Ávila, also called Saint Teresa of Jesus, was a prominent Spanish mystic, Carmelite nun, and writer. Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish knight who became priest and found the Society of Jesus and became its first Superior General.
