The 7 most wonderful day trips from Austin

The state capital of Texas has built an impressive reputation as a cultural and artistic hub in recent years – people cannot get enough of Austin and what it has to offer.

But don't let its endless attractions (live music, galleries, food, oh my!) distract you from the delights that lie just beyond the city limits. The Hill Country is filled with phenomenal hiking, scenic lakes and rivers, charming small towns and top-tier wineries.

Why not extend your city break and indulge in some fun day trips before packing up? These are seven of our favorites within a two-hour drive of Austin, Texas.

Colorful umbrellas line a waterway with people dining nearby

1. Explore the River Walk and visit the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas

Travel time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

If you can spare a few days to visit San Antonio , grab the opportunity. Its Spanish colonial architecture makes it one of the most beautiful cities in the US. But if you can only spare a day, take a leisurely wander along the 15-mile River Walk  that connects multiple districts such as Downtown and the popular Pearl District, home to a food hall, farmers market and excellent shopping.

A visit to San Antonio wouldn't be complete without learning about the city's Spanish colonial past and its vibrant Mexican culture today. The San Antonio Missions National Historic Park features five historic Spanish missions, including the Alamo , which are all connected by a bike path.

Afterward, immerse yourself in the Chicano community at El Mercado , a traditional Mexican market full of shops with Mexican-made products, art, traditional food stalls, restaurants, bakeries, and musical and artistic performances.

How to get to San Antonio from Austin:  The easiest way to get to San Antonio from Austin is to drive down I-35. However, you could also take a bus with Greyhound or MegaBus, or hop on the Amtrak Texas Eagle train. An Amtrak coach ticket from Austin to San Antonio is cheap, but the journey takes about 3.5 hours – about three times longer than traveling by bus or car.

2. Fredericksburg is a surprising wine destination

Travel time: 1 hour and 30 minutes

People may not associate Texas with fine wines but the small town of Fredericksburg has really made a name for itself in the last few years. Over 100 wineries and vineyards (and one distillery) surround this charming town and offer different types of tastings and experiences for every palate.

While you could skip a trip into town and just visit the wineries, don't deny yourself a good time. Sample the city's German heritage in the cuisine of local restaurants, explore the Pioneer Museum  and admire the architecture of the Vereins Kirche . German culture aside, the downtown area is filled with cute clothing shops and gift stores that are worth exploring.

How to get to Fredericksburg from Austin:  Most travelers drive from Austin to Fredericksburg and spend the day exploring the town and wineries before returning to ATX in the evening. However, a Greyhound bus is the most affordable transportation option.

You can also book half-day wine tours from Austin with Austin Detours or Texas Wine Tours . They will likely not stop in Fredericksburg itself though, so if you want to spend some time in the town, you'll need to book a private tour or take your own car.

3. Hit the trails at Pedernales Falls State Park

Travel time: 1 hour

Austin is surrounded by some of the best state parks in Texas, but our favorite is  Pedernales Falls State Park . It's home to a beautiful river and a mix of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails that take you along rocky outcrops, through forests to overlooks and even a waterfall.

Yes, you can go swimming in the Pedernales River, as well as kayaking or canoeing. Spend a few hours at the park or camp overnight, but make sure to book your reservation well in advance as the park often reaches its capacity by mid-morning and will then close to those without permits and reservations.

Extend your stay and explore more of the Lone Star State on two feet – these are our seven favorite hikes in Texas.

How to get to Pedernales Falls State Park from Austin:  The park is a 32-mile drive west of Austin on Hwy 290 followed by a turning north onto route 3232 for 10 miles. There are no bus or train connections.

A worker slices barbecue for a customer at Smitty's Market in Lockhart, Texas

4. Eat in Lockhart, the Barbecue Capital of the State

Travel time: 35 minutes

They say you can't visit the Lone Star State without tasting the barbecue , so it's a good thing that the barbecue capital of Texas is just a short drive from Austin. Lockhart was given the Barbecue Capital honor in 2003 by the Texas Senate, and since then, travelers have been making their way to the small town to taste the best smoked, fall-off-the-bone meats.

The four most popular spots in Lockhart are Black's Barbecue , Smitty's Market , Kreuz Market  and Chisholm Trail Bar-B-Q . You can expect slow-roasted meat over oak wood and some phenomenal German-inspired sausages. We highly recommend going on a BBQ crawl between the restaurants and tasting different cuts and sides. Sure, you'll be full by the end, but you'll be able to say you had a true old-school barbecue-tasting experience.

How to get to Lockhart from Austin:  You could easily drive or get a cab to Lockhart, but if you're on a budget, take the 1516 Orange Route Interurban bus from Austin to Lockhart and back. Get off at the Lockhart HEB stop, as it's within walking distance of the town's best barbecue joints.

5. Tube the river in San Marcos, Texas

Travel time: 40 minutes

River tubing is a super popular summer activity in Texas, and the San Marcos River is among the top two destinations for it in the state (the Guadalupe River is the second). Grab some snacks and a floating cooler full of beverages and spend a half or full day tubing the river.

If you have your own tube, you can use the free drop-in spot from San Marcos City Park . Otherwise, rent a tube from the Lion's Club , which includes an unlimited shuttle pass. The shuttle will pick you up downstream and return you to the launch spot as many times as you'd like. There are also lots of other rental tube outfitters located at different parts of the river.

If you'd rather explore the river at night, book a Crystal Kayak Glow Tour with Paddle SMTX . It uses clear kayaks with colored lights for its night tours.

How to get to San Marcos from Austin:  If you don't have a car to get from Austin to San Marcos, you're in luck – the Interurban Coach has you covered. Take the 1510 Yellow Route or the 1517 Express Gold Route from Austin to San Marcos, both of which are about an hour-long ride. An all-day pass on the Interurban Coach is only $6. Another option is the Austin to San Marcos Amtrak line on the Texas Eagle. A coach ticket can be as cheap as $5 and the ride is only 45 minutes long.

If your main purpose is to go tubing in San Marcos, you can book a dedicated excursion from Austin. ATXcursions  has a shuttle service from central Austin to San Marcos. A tube rental and ice chests (with ice) are included in the price of the ticket. Plus, you can drink and snack on the shuttle there and back.

Diners eat on a terrace by a lake at sunset

6. Party on the water in Lake Travis

Lake Travis is very popular among Austin locals and has a bit of a reputation as being the city's "party lake." The lake itself is 63.75 miles long and has over 271 miles of shoreline, making it a fantastic destination to rent a boat, jet ski, kayak or canoe. Devil's Cove is where the party is at – people tie their boats together as they hang out, drink and enjoy the Texas sun.

If you don't want to rent a boat, you can go fishing at Lake Travis or admire the view from above on a zipline . Don't forget to grab a bite at the Oasis , the largest outdoor restaurant in Texas with stunning lake and sunset views. It has live music, too!

How to get to Lake Travis from Austin:  The lake is a 20-mile drive northwest of Austin. There are no public transport options, but you can take a cab or an Uber/Lyft if you'd rather not drive.

7. Enjoy small-town fun in Wimberly

Travel time: 50 minutes

The Hill Country is full of delightful small towns, and any Austinite will tell you that Wimberly is a great day excursion. Spend some time among the boutique stores and art galleries in the Historic Downtown before grabbing a meal at the CreekHouse Kitchen and Bar or a wine tasting at the Hill Country Wine Shoppe .

Experience the Wild West at Pioneer Town , an old-timey town with cool buildings that the whole family will love. If one day isn't quite enough, the Wimberly area is full of cabin rentals and hotels with spas. It offers adventure like horseback riding and ziplining, artsy activities like glass blowing and even tastings at a rum distillery.

And if you travel to Wimberly in the summer, don't forget to visit the Blue Hole Regional Park , Cypress Falls Swimming Hole  or Jacob's Well Natural Area . These swimming holes offer a cool respite from the sweltering Texas heat.

How to get to Wimberly from Austin:  Trust us when we say that a car is necessary to visit Wimberly – it's a 37-mile drive southwest of Austin. You could take the Texas Eagle Amtrak train from Austin to San Marcos and then get a 25-minute taxi, Uber or Lyft ride from San Marcos to Wimberly, but it's difficult to get to all the destinations around town without your own car.

10 Best Day Trips from Austin (90 Minutes or Less!)

My 10 favorite austin day trips with recommendations to help plan your next weekend getaway..

austin texas day trips

Before I moved to Texas, I had only visited Austin. And now, three years after moving here, I still have so much left of this state to explore. I’d say I’ve only seen about a quarter of what this state has to offer.

That isn’t for lack of trying! We’ve done a lot of weekend and day trips around Texas.

We frequently have long weekends in West Texas , as well as the Dallas-Fort Worth area. In 2019 I even went on a nine-day, 54 brewery road trip through north and east Texas.

But that’s not what I’m here to share…

Fun Day Trips From Austin and Central Texas

DAY TRIPS

In this guide, I want to share with you all my favorite day trips around Austin (and San Antonio too!). I’ve listed ten places, and a few of them are still on my list to visit. You’ll get my recommendations along with what’s next on my travel list.

Below, you’ll find a handy dandy map with all ten of my central Texas day trips listed. If you’re up for it, print this bad boy out and put it on your wall to do the whole throw-a-dart-and-go-wherever-it-lands thing.

All ten of these Austin day trips are unique, small towns less than 90 minutes away from downtown Austin. And I’d like to point out that many of these towns, such as Marble Falls , Fredericksburg, or New Braunfels are best enjoyed with more time such as an overnighter or weekend trip.

But that’s up to you to decide! So for now, let’s get into my recommendations and tips for the best day trips around Austin and Hill Country.

Dripping Springs is the land of the plenty when it comes to Texas craft beer booze. Goodness, there is so much to do (ok, mostly drink) in Dripping Springs. And every bit is delicious. Probably thanks to all of that clean and tasty Texas Hill Country water, LBR.

Some of the original central Texas makers and brewers have been out here, doing their thing for ages. However, there are consistently new breweries/distilleries/wineries/cideries popping up. It’s like a choose-your-own route type of adventure every time I come out here. But for now, below are my picks for your day trip to Dripping Springs.

The Top 14 Day Trips From Austin

unique trips from austin

From incredible swimming holes and state parks to delightful small towns to buzzy breweries and wineries, there's no shortage of fun day trips in the Austin area. Whether you're itching to get out of the city or you simply want to soak up everything the surrounding Hill Country has to offer, these are the best places to check out.

Wimberley: Swimming Holes and a Quaint Hill Country Town

In quaint Wimberley, you’ll find two of the best swimming holes in Texas: Jacob’s Well and Blue Hole. Fed by the Trinity Aquifer, Jacob’s Well is an artesian spring that releases thousands of gallons of ice-cold water each day. It’s also the second-biggest underwater cave in Texas and the deepest part of the cave system is nearly 140 feet deep.

A stunning feature inside the lush, 126-acre Blue Hole Regional Park, Blue Hole is an iconic swimming spot. Think century-old cypress trees, rope swings, and yes, crystal-clear, blue-tinted water swirling through limestone.

After enjoying the swimming holes, be sure to check out Wimberley afterward—this sweet little Hill Country town is chock-full of antique shops, galleries selling local artwork, kitschy souvenir shops, comfort food cafes, and wine tasting rooms. If you can’t get reservations for Blue Hole or Jacob’s Well, nearby Cypress Creek is a good alternative.)

Getting There: Wimberley is roughly an hour from Austin and best accessible by car.

Travel Tip: For both Jacob’s Well and Blue Hole, reservations are required and only a certain number of visitors are allowed at a time. Especially in the summertime, you’ll want to book as far in advance as possible (at least a few weeks out).

Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge: Hiking and Birding Galore

Matthewrutledge / Public Domain

For the outdoorsy-minded, Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is an excellent spot for hiking and bird-watching. Balcones Canyonlands is a wildlife habitat in Marble Falls, roughly an hour from Austin, and is home to endangered songbirds like the golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo. There are over 7 miles of trails to enjoy here, which take you through the “greatest hits'' of Hill Country hiking: wildflower-dotted prairie land, old-growth trees, rolling hills, and panoramic vistas.

Getting There: Balcones Canyonlands makes for an easy day trip from Austin, as it's just an hour away by car.

Travel Tip: While some wildlife refuges allow dogs, Balcones Canyonlands does not.

Hamilton Pool Preserve: Awe-Inspiring Natural Beauty

About 40 minutes outside of Austin, paradise awaits in the form of a pristine, lagoon-like grotto that’s definitely not your average swimming hole. A beautiful, moss- and fern-covered pool flanked by a 50-foot natural waterfall, Hamilton Pool Preserve offers a truly scenic spot to cool off. Be sure to walk along the slippery rock and stand underneath the waterfall that’s fed by Hamilton Creek and never completely dries up.

Getting There: Go by car so that you can continue exploring the area after your visit to the preserve (it's about an hour's drive from Austin).

Travel Tip: Definitely make advance reservations before you go.

Gruene: Home of the Oldest Dance Hall in Texas

In nearby New Braunfels, historic Gruene is as old-school charming as it gets. Stroll around the town’s city center, stay at the Gruene Mansion Inn, and enjoy dinner at the famed Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar , with its lovely views of the Guadalupe River. Then, spend the evening two-stepping or enjoying a show at the historic Gruene Hall, the oldest continually running dance hall in Texas. The outdoor beer garden here is open daily, and it makes for a great spot to sip a Lone Star and enjoy the music.

Getting There: Gruene is a little over an hour away and best accessible by car.

Travel Tip: Schedule your visit around seeing a show at Gruene Hall.

Guadalupe River State Park: Experience a Classic Texas River

If you’ve never floated lazily down a Texas river on an inflatable tube, with waterproof radios blasting and cans of rosé flowing like water, then it’s time to remedy that. At Guadalupe River State Park, float the day away underneath towering cypress trees and along clear, intoxicating waters, and watch all your cares dissipate like smoke. Though most people do come here to float, as well as swim and fish, there are 13 hiking trails that feature lovely views of the valley and the river.

Getting There: The park is a couple of hours away from the city limits.

Travel Tip: The Guadalupe is definitely a party scene, but if you want more of a chill experience, plan to float during the week or before 10 a.m. on weekends.

Driftwood Estate Winery: Vino With a View

Courtesy of Driftwood Estate Winery

Hill Country is replete with wineries and while many have picturesque views and tasty wines, none compare to Driftwood Estate Winery. At this picture-perfect winery, visitors can enjoy a “Pick Six” wine tasting and a meal from the on-site Driftwood Bistro. Entrees (like the ribeye quesadilla and croque monsieur) are hearty and Texas-ified, though there are salads and cheese plates to pick from, too. But it's the location—high atop a bluff, overlooking the sunny vineyard below—that truly sets Driftwood apart.

Getting There: It's a 45-minute drive down Highway 290 and Ranch Road 12 to Driftwood.

Travel Tip: Time your visit for sunset when the views are at their absolute best.

Sisterdale: A Hill Country Hidden-Gem

More laid-back (and off-the-beaten-path) than other, more touristy towns in Hill Country, Sisterdale is technically an unincorporated farming community. There's no bank or gas station but what the community lacks in modern-day conveniences, it makes up for in natural beauty, outdoor activities, wine, and unique goods. The Sisterdale General Store is a hub for wine tours and tube and kayak rentals (alongside handmade leather items); the Marlowe Candle Company sells hand-mixed and poured candles; and, Sister Creek Vineyards is a must-visit for wine lovers.

Getting There: Reserve at least two hours to driving to Sisterdale and make sure you have a full tank of gas before you leave

Travel Tip: Swim at nearby James Kiehl Park, a small, serene park on the Guadalupe River.

Getting There: From Austin, San Antonio is about an hour-and-a-half to two hours away, depending on traffic and what part of the city you're coming from.

Travel Tip: Check out the Botanical Garden and the King William/Southtown district, rather than only dwelling in super-touristy areas.

Krause Springs offers natural beauty in the form of emerald-green foliage and cold, clear water tumbling down a steep bluff into the pools below. Owned by the Krause family for over 50 years, this natural site has a total of 32 springs on the property, spread out across 115 acres. There are several manmade pools and one natural pool that flows into Lake Travis, although the main attraction is the waterfall area of the natural pool. You can make reservations for RV camping, but the primitive camping sites are first-come, first-served.

Getting There: Krause Springs is located about 30 minutes northwest of Austin.

Travel Tip: The park always hits capacity quickly; go as early as possible to ensure that you get in.

Jester King Brewery & Pedernales Falls: Sour Brews and Waterfalls

Jester King Brewery boasts a homey, inviting atmosphere in a truly gorgeous setting: think golden-lit fields and huge live oak trees shading an old farmhouse, plus plenty of picnic tables, cornhole games, and more than 60 draft options, including the brewery's own spritzy sours. For the perfect Hill Country day, combine an afternoon of eating and drinking at Jester King with a morning spent hiking at Pedernales Falls (pictured here).

Getting There: It's about 30 to 45 minutes west of the city, by car.

Travel Tip: Don't skip on the mouthwateringly good woodfired pizza.

Courtesy of Cypress Valley

Visitors to Cypress Valley have the opportunity to see the ancient trees up close on a canopy tour. The tour includes five zip lines, two sky bridges, and a rappel from the last platform. If you please, you can spend the night here in one of five treetop bungalows sitting at least 30 feet above the ground. Ziplining through giant cypress trees by day and staying in a luxury treehouse by night? Yes, please.

Getting There: Travel by car to Cypress Valley, an hour-long drive from Austin.

Travel Tip: Book well in advance.

While you are there, don’t forget to check out the Gruene Historic District. This tiny town is a district of New Braunfels and you can find a scattering of interesting historical buildings. Although most of the original businesses that were there are long gone, you can still get a feel for what life was like here in the mid-1800s.

There is also one very important building that still remains— Gruene Hall . Built in 1878, this is Texas’ oldest dance hall and one of the most famous. It still has much of the original layout with plenty of space for dancing to live music. The hall hosts some great performers so make sure to check the schedule before heading to New Braunfels to see if there is anything good happening while you are there.

Like Germany itself, New Braunfels is famous for its beer and you can join one of the city’s beer tours which will take you to the local craft breweries and traditional breweries where you can learn more about how beer is made and what makes Texas Hill Country’s beer unique (spoiler alert: a lot of it is based on the properties of the local water supply that is used to brew it).

Frequently referred to as the “Gateway to the Hill Country.” Dripping Springs is right on the way to the charming German town of Fredericksburg making it an easy multi-stop day trip from Austin.

This famous natural swimming hole and the adjacent park are located just a hop, skip, and a jump away from the city of Wimberley. With 126 acres of untouched forests and grass fields lined by old cypress growth trees that somehow managed to escape a developer’s chainsaw, the Blue Hole Regional Park ’s biggest draw is the crystal clear waters of the swimming hole. The park is home to a unique ecosystem and if you are lucky, you may be able to spot some rare species of birds, reptiles, or mammals that live there. As crazy as it is to believe, this beautiful area was set to be developed and it was the local townspeople that stepped in to save it so make sure to give them a hearty thank you for their efforts.

13. Jacob’s Well Natural Area

Distance: 36 miles

This fascinating swimming hole is an enormous spring that serves as the headwaters of the creek that eventually feeds into the Blue Hole. The well plunges down 23 feet until you reach the “bottom” where it then veers off into one of Texas’ longest underwater caves. While no one but very experienced cave divers should attempt to go deep into the cave, the well itself is open for swimmers and you can spend a few hours relaxing in the cool waters (and hopefully taking lots of photos of the unique surroundings!)

It is located just 12 minutes away from the Blue Hole Regional Park and you can easily combine both spots into a great day trip.

14. San Antonio

Distance: 80 miles

With a compact and easily-walkable city center, San Antonio is a great place for a day trip. History lovers can spend hours and hours exploring the many historic sites including the San Fernando Cathedral in the Main Square, and The Alamo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which was one of the city’s Spanish missions and the location of the infamous Battle of the Alamo which proved to play a pivotal role in the Texas Revolution. After a day of sightseeing, you can have dinner or drinks along the Riverwalk or head over to the ultra-trendy Pearl District which is home to some of the city’s best restaurants before making your way back to Austin. If you love ghost stories, you may also want to stay a little longer and join one of the city’s many ghost tours.

If you want to find out more great things to do in San Antonio, make sure to head over to our article on the Ultimate Things To Do in San Antonio . It is full of great options for things to do in the city center written by our very own in-house travel expert.

15. Palmetto State Park

Distance: 56 miles

Travel Time: 1 hour

If you want to feel like you have left the dry deserts of Texas far behind and surround yourself with tropical plants, then it is time to hop in the car and head to Palmetto State Park . The park is named after the dwarf palmetto plants which are fed by the rushing water of the San Marcos River that flows directly through the center of the park. While there are plenty of hiking trails that allow you to get a closer look at the lush vegetation, one of the main draws here are the multitude of water sports on offer including swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, canoeing, and tubing. If you want to spend the night sleeping under the stars, there is a campground where you can pitch a tent and fall asleep to the sounds of nature.

16. Marble Falls

Travel Time: 54 minutes

Marble Falls is a small town with a big personality. It features a walkable downtown area where the streets are lined with independent shops, restaurants, and cafes where you can stop off before walking down to the Colorado River and Lake Marble Falls which offer a multitude of options for water sports. While you are there, make sure not to miss the “Before I Die” wall on Main Street that is part of a global art project that inspires people to think about the things that they want to do in their lives. The city offers easy access to all of the great spots of the Texas Hill Country so this could be a great alternative if you are looking for somewhere to base yourself that is a little more laid-back than Austin.

17. Johnson City

Travel Time: 53 minutes

Johnson City is famous as the birthplace and final resting place of American President Lyndon Baines Johnson and there are plenty of places where you can learn more about his life and presidency. (Interestingly, the town wasn’t named after him—it was just a coincidence!).

The Lyndon B. Johnson National Park encompasses his childhood home and the LBJ Ranch where you can take a driving tour of the Texas White House where LBJ spent much of his time working throughout his presidency. If you want to go even further back through the Johnson family tree, you can also check out the Johnson Settlement which was built by his grandparents in the mid-19th century. Meanwhile, the adjacent Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site doubles as a living history farm where you can see what life was like on a small 19th-century farm.

There is a lot more to Johnson City than LBJ and while you are there, you can take a walk through the inviting main square, visit some of the locally-owned boutiques and restaurants, or visit the Science Mill, Johnson City’s impressive children’s science museum. On your way to Johnson City, you can also stop by the Pedernales Falls State Park, a series of limestone waterfalls with hiking trails and swimming spots where you can heat up and then cool back down.

18. Lake Travis

Distance: 20 miles

If you want some fun in the sun but don’t have a lot of time to spare, Lake Travis may be the perfect fit. This large lake lies just a short drive outside of Austin and offers a slew of activities from party boat rentals to a floating water park. You can even go scuba diving there to see a sunken boat and interesting geological formations. If you prefer to stay dry, you can try out the longest zip line in Texas or play a round of golf at one of the local golf courses.

After a long day on the water, you can chill out with a cold beer or a hot bite at one of the local bars and restaurants. Due to its proximity to Austin, this is one of the most popular lakes so while it probably won’t be a very relaxing trip, you are sure to have a lot of fun!

Distance: 102 miles

Lying about halfway between Austin and Dallas, Waco is one of the best Austin day trips if you are looking for a gem of a city that has a lot to offer. The city is home to some fantastic cafes and restaurants where you can get your caffeine fix or a filling breakfast or lunch to start the day, a handful of interesting attractions including the sprawling Cameron Park, home to a zoo, and the Waco Mammoth National Monument which was the original dig site of a Colombian mammoth and the Baylor University campus, Texas’ oldest college which is nestled within a beautiful campus.

While you are there, you can also shop ‘til you drop at the Magnolia Market at the Silos, a huge shopping complex that encompasses two city blocks and is anchored by (you guessed it) two 120 feet tall silos. The complex features everything from antique shops to Fixer Upper fashions and it is the perfect place to pick up a few new things to take home with you to remember your trip by.

Best weekend getaways from Austin

San Antonio, TX

1.  San Antonio, TX

Drive time: 1hr 30 mins from Austin

San Antonio  is a city rich in history, standing proud at over 300 years old. When planning on what to see and do here, there is, of course, the Alamo, one of its top tourist destinations. But visitors shouldn’t forget about the four other Spanish colonial missions, all of which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Strolling along the bustling River Walk is another signature sight-seeing activity. Into art? Visit one (or more!) of San Antonio’s many museums, such as the McNay Art Museum and the Witte Museum. Family-friendly spots include Six Flags Fiesta Texas, SeaWorld, and the San Antonio Zoo. Before leaving, you can’t miss out on eating some Tex-Mex, a cuisine that’s found all over the state but was put on the map in this very city in the 1800s. Meanwhile, those with a sweet tooth should make a beeline for  La Panaderia , the city’s most famous bakery.

Stay here:  Canopy by Hilton San Antonio Riverwalk  opened in 2021 and is the hottest property of the moment. It’s conveniently located in the heart of all the action—walking distance along the riverwalk to the likes of the Alamo and trendy Pearl District and has two of the coolest social hangouts (Domingo and Otro) for dining and drinks.

Waco, TX

2.  Waco, TX

Drive time: 1hr 30mins from Austin

Waco  has experienced a surge in tourism with the incredible popularity of locals Chip and Joanna Gaines’ HGTV show Fixer Upper. Fans and design lovers make pilgrimages to the stylish Magnolia Market at the Silos to shop for home goods and to enjoy the green lawn with games and food trucks. While this destination may be one of the more popular attractions in the town, you can fill out your weekend with trips to the Dr. Pepper Museum, Waco Mammoth National Monument, Cameron Park Zoo, Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum, and all the other antique and boutique shops. You should also consider visiting Homestead Heritage, a peaceful 500-acre community with a craft village showcasing artisan works and a restaurant serving local, organic foods.

Stay here:  Now open, Camp Fimfo is the ultimate campers' paradise (but if you’re not keen on tents, they also have RV sites and cabins). The best part is all the activities, meaning a jam-packed schedule of fun without leaving the premises. Think water playground, pool, hot tubs, ball games (including 18-hole mini golf course) and food and drink outlets. Now there’s finally a good reason to stay overnight in Waco.

Fredericksburg, TX

3.  Fredericksburg, TX

Fredericksburg is a charming small town famous for its German heritage and wineries. In between digging into delicious German food at restaurants like Otto, sampling wines at spots like Grape Creek Vineyards, and perusing the shops on Main Street, make it a point to check out the impressive National Museum of the Pacific War (located here because the town is the boyhood home of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas during World War II). Other things to add to your to-do list include going hiking at the scenic Enchanted Rock State Natural Area (a large granite dome that gives those at the top stunning views of the Hill Country) and strolling the beautiful flower gardens of Wildseed Farms.

Stay here:  The quaint bed and breakfast  Hoffman Haus  is tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, yet still just a block from downtown. You can choose to stay in a room, suite, or house on their compound—all of which have their own unique charm and serve as a beautiful and relaxing escape.

Houston, TX

4.  Houston, TX

Drive time: 2hr 30mins from Austin

The largest city in Texas,  Houston  is a sprawling, incredibly diverse area. Houston’s Museum District alone, which includes 19 museums, galleries, and cultural attractions, is enough to keep you busy for days. And of the over 300 parks, the expansive Memorial Park and the tranquil Mercer Arboretum and Botanic Gardens are just two places where you can take a breather from the urban metropolis to enjoy nature. Depending on the season you’re visiting, consider catching an Astros game at Minute Maid Park or a Texans game at NRG Stadium. Of course, you can’t talk about a trip to Houston without mentioning NASA. The Johnson Space Center calls the city home, and visitors are invited to learn about space exploration through a visit to Space Center Houston. Rice-lovers, arrive on an empty stomach—Houston has the largest Chinatown in Texas full of Asian delights (don't miss Vietnamese crawfish from Cajun Kitchen or tapioca dumplings from Nam Giao). Meanwhile, those looking for a unique swim should head to the  Altitude Rooftop and Pool  for the Marriott Marquis’ one-of-a-kind Texas-shaped lazy river.

Stay here:  Base yourself at Houston's ultra-chic shopping, dining, and entertainment community,  CITYCENTRE . There's only one hotel here,  The Moran , which towers above the courtyard of all the action. The stay has a European flair with a business angle. Suites are spacious and come with floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of those vibrant views. On-site dining options include a Mediterranean eaterie, Radio Milano, and a cocktail lounge, Fireside. Step up to The Moran’s pool, or boggle down to work on the hotel-wide high-speed internet either in-room or down in the lobby.

Dallas, TX

5.  Dallas, TX

Drive time: 3hr from Austin

Dallas  is part of the DFW metroplex, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the entire country. If you’re stumped on where to start your trip, the fashionable Uptown, vibrant Deep Ellum, hip Bishop Arts District, and thriving Lower Greenville neighborhoods serve as great hubs for exploring many restaurants, shops, and bars. History buffs should add a stop at the Sixth Floor Museum and Dealey Plaza to their itinerary to view exhibits on John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Other museums of note include the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, Dallas Museum of Art, and Perot Museum of Nature and Science. If you’re looking for an outdoor outing, check out the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, White Rock Lake, or Klyde Warren Park. Indoor festivities are a treat: go dine at Richard Branson's extremely social-media-friendly  Commons Club , and  after that head to funky subterranean cocktail lounge,  The Midnight Rambler at The Joule, to toast the end of your trip

Stay here:  Dallas is the best place to go glam, so live your best life at the  Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek . The icon was built in 1925 and today retains its charming European, Renaissance style amid a serene oasis of gardens. All 128 rooms and 15 suites ooze style and opulence, serving as a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of The Big D. That being said, The Mansion Bar is an excellent choice to turn things up at.

Corpus Christi, TX

6.  Corpus Christi, TX

When you think of weekend getaways in Texas, chances are you’re not envisioning miles of beaches. But Corpus Christi offers just that: Situated right on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, the city is a fun seaside retreat that’s unique from much of the rest of the state. Head up to North Beach to visit the Texas State Aquarium or simply enjoy the sun and sand. You can also see the USS Lexington here, a record-setting carrier that operated during World War II and was part of the set for the film Pearl Harbor. While you’re around, you’ll want to squeeze in some time at the Padre Island National Seashore and Mustang Island State Park. Schlitterbahn Riverpark, South Texas Botanical Gardens and Nature Center, and the Selena Museum make for other worthwhile stops.

Stay here:  At the  Omni Corpus Christi Hotel , guests can enjoy sweeping bay views. Conveniences and amenities at this high-rise, downtown hotel include a fully-equipped fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, racquetball court, and spa.

Galveston, TX

7.  Galveston, TX

Drive time: 3hr 30mins from Austin

For a weekend getaway to another coastal town, drive out to Galveston, a resort island in the Gulf just outside of Houston. Once the capital of the Republic of Texas (albeit briefly), this city boasts 32 miles of beaches and is dotted with well-preserved examples of Victorian architecture. The island is now a popular tourist destination thanks in large part to the presence of Moody Gardens, which has an aquarium, rainforest pyramid, 4D theater, animal experiences, ropes course, and more. But that’s far from the only site that draws visitors. There’s also the Historic Pleasure Pier (complete with rides, midway games, dining, and shops), Bishop’s Palace, Moody Mansion, and The Strand.

Stay here:    Hotel Galvez  is named after Bernardo de Gálvez, just like the city itself. This historic beachfront hotel first opened in 1911 and has modern, relaxing resort luxuries, including a swim-up bar, courtesy bicycles, and a complimentary shuttle to the Strand District and Pier 21.

Lake Charles, LA

8.  Lake Charles, LA

Drive time: 4hr 30mins from Austin

Driving east from Austin on I-10 across the state line will take you to Lake Charles, Louisiana. As Texas state law doesn’t allow for casinos, the main draw of this city for Austin visitors is its casino resorts, including Golden Nugget Casino and L'Auberge du Lac Casino which each have around 80 table games and 1,600 slots. Even if gambling isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other resort amenities for your enjoyment like a pool, an arcade, a spa, golf, shopping, and various entertainment events throughout the year. And if all of that still wasn’t enough leisure for you, Golden Nugget has its own lakefront beach while L'Auberge has a large lazy river. You could spend the entire weekend in the resorts themselves, but you might also want to check out the eco-tours and swamp tours where you can experience the area’s unique wildlife, museums, and art galleries.

Stay here:  With a stay at the  Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino , you may never feel like leaving since restaurants, nightlife, shopping, and entertainment are all right there at your fingertips at your own resort and the next door L'Auberge du Lac Casino.

Getaway Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing some exceptional destinations firsthand.

At Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek, I was instantly captivated by its timeless elegance.

The room variety was impressive, offering spacious and tastefully decorated accommodations that catered to our every need.

The comfort and cleanliness were top-notch, ensuring a restful stay for everyone.

Located in a serene neighborhood, it provided a tranquil escape from the city buzz.

While the price was reflective of its luxurious offerings, it might not fit every budget.

On the other hand, The Post Oak Hotel stood out with its remarkable room variety that left us spoiled for choice.

The level of comfort and cleanliness was impeccable, making us feel pampered throughout our stay.

Its location, nestled in the heart of a vibrant district, offered easy access to attractions and entertainment.

But, affordability might be a concern for some, as it caters to a more upscale clientele.

Lastly, Stanton House El Paso presented a unique charm with its distinct character.

While the room variety wasn’t as extensive as the other two, it still offered comfortable and well-maintained accommodations.

Affordability was a highlight, providing excellent value for the price.

In terms of family-friendliness, it catered well to families with its welcoming atmosphere and amenities suitable for children.

How I Picked The Destinations

To ensure that the chosen locations would provide an exceptional experience for travelers, I sought the guidance of locals who shared their recommendations and insider knowledge.

By engaging with the community, I gained valuable insights into hidden gems, local attractions, and unique experiences.

Also, I extensively researched online travel resources, including reviews, travel forums, and reputable websites, to gather comprehensive information and ensure the accuracy of my recommendations.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

unique trips from austin

Vincent & Rachel

Kevin Wilhelm is the best. I don’t know if we’ve ever had such attention paid to us and effort put out for any service we’ve ever had. It didn’t feel like a person trying to sell us a house. It felt like an old friend guiding us to a home. Kevin’s optimism was infectious, and weeks after settlement, he is still helping us to make the transition. We may be new to Texas, but we know we have at least one friend here.

I had a great experience with Kevin. This was my third home sale/purchase with him, and I’ve referred him to several friends over the years as well. Kevin is a top notch Realtor, and he gives me the information I need in order to make an informed decision. Kevin makes his recommendations but doesn’t flinch if I go a different direction, he has all the contacts when I need a referral, he negotiates hard on my behalf, he goes the extra mile and then another 10. I’ll keep recommending Kevin; he’s fantastic!

Kevin Wilhelm started out as my Realtor and ended up a friend. Kevin’s expertise, style, and work ethics are second to none in the Texas market. Kevin is the BEST! We LOVE our new home, Kevin! Thanks for all your help!

Kevin was an absolute pleasure to work with! He treated me with the utmost respect and honesty, and his integrity and reachability were impeccable. Most of all he made my buying process easy and non-stressful. I would even go on to say that over the course of the last 6 months, I have come to consider Kevin as a friend and not just my realtor. I would highly recommend working with Kevin!

Nick & Toni E

Kevin Wilhelm is awesome! Toni and I feel extremely lucky to be able to work with Kevin. He is responsive, reliable, empathetic, and so passionate about his job. Kevin also shows such genuine care about exceeding the expectations of his clients.

Kevin was an exceptional help to us when we were looking for homes in Austin! He was honest, prompt, friendly, had an abundance of local knowledge, and provided us with excellent service. We would absolutely work with Kevin again and highly recommend him.

Mark & Debbie

Kevin showed himself to be ethical, thoughtful, nonjudgmental, calm, respectful and knowledgeable. We repeatedly changed our criteria; Kevin was patient as those criteria moved from South Austin to West and Central Austin! We took a year-long break from the search. As soon as we determined, we did not have the appetite for the grueling task of building our own home, and that the sale of the lot was in our best interest, we knew who to contact. Kevin was ready to help us. He researched the market and suggested a price that more than satisfied us. Better yet, we had multiple offers, and a contract in less than a week and a closing in little more than two weeks! We will highly recommend Kevin Wilhelm to our friends and relatives, and complete strangers, and will continue to consult with him for our next Austin purchase.

Kurt & Amanda

Kevin was truly great throughout the whole process of buying and selling! He was recommended by my sister, Robin, who he helped when she bought her house, so there’s no higher recommendation than that, in my book, and he lived up to the billing. Kevin is a 10/10, and I would highly recommend him and would work with him again.

I absolutely can’t say enough about Kevin Wilhelm and how amazing he was in holding my hand throughout the entire home buying process. If you or anyone you know is in the market to buy or sell in Austin, please consider talking to Kevin. I’ve been around real estate agents my entire life (my mom has been in the business in San Antonio since I was a baby, and still is), and I’ve also bought and sold a home before I moved to Austin, so I feel I know a quality agent when I see it. Kevin was professional, knowledgeable about the Austin market and even helped me connect with the right mortgage company that was able to close my loan in 20 days! Again, whether you’re in the buyer or seller market now or will be in the future, I encourage you to consider using his services. He’s a rock star!

Luiz & Maria

If you are looking for a Realtor that will give 200% to help you buy or sell a place and make a process that can be a very stressful one be a smooth journey, then Kevin Wilhelm is who you need. Within minutes of meeting Kevin, we knew he was the one to help us find our dream home. We immediately saw how knowledgeable he is about the market in the area we were interested in, so we knew we were in perfect hands. Kevin exceeded all of our expectations and guided us through this process, held our hand, and answered all of our many questions, all super promptly and super nicely. He was extremely punctual at every meeting and was an ultimate resource for us. We felt Kevin had our back and we were always cared for. He would even go to check up on the builder without us asking to, to make sure things were progressing properly and would have the tough conversations with them if things were of concern. We know our home buying process went so smoothly because of Kevin, so we would absolutely recommend that you look no further and have the best teammate to guide you through this process! You will be so happy working with him because Kevin’s amazing!

I can’t give you enough kudos about Kevin Wilhelm. We’ve had a long relationship and I consider him a good friend. He showed us many houses over many years. I’m sure he wanted to drop us as a client several times….in fact, I told him he could do that….but he stuck with us. And it worked out great for us all. We’re very happy with what we bought, and without Kevin’s help, we would not have even known about it. He’s a great guy and a terrific realtor. We will use him again and will recommend him to friends.

Kevin Wilhelm was absolutely the best real estate agent ever!!! I am sooooo pleased with my new home, it’s location, and price and this would not have been possible without Kevin Wilhelm’s professional expertise, his patience, and willingness to work hard for his client-me. I was 4 hrs away. However, Kevin kept me informed by reviewing properties and taking videos, answered all my questions, and helping me to make sound decisions. He was a superb negotiator!!!! And last but not least, he listened to my wants and needs and matched me up with a desirable property. Look no further than Kevin Wilhelm for the best real estate broker/agent in the business. Sincerely, a happy, satisfied, new home owner!!!!!!
