About Prineville

With such a storied past and exciting present—not to mention some of Central Oregon’s most breathtaking outdoor beauty—it’s hard to narrow down what specifically Prineville is known for. But we'll give it our best shot.

Prineville was founded in 1870 and is the oldest city in Central Oregon. Visitors feel that connection to the past in the brick buildings that line Main Street through the heart of town, the neon lights buzzing over businesses that date back decades, and in stone architecture that recalls Prineville’s past (and present) as a trading post for the local ranching community. The city is even home to Oregon’s oldest public structure: the Crook County Courthouse, built in 1909. Best of all: You can learn about that history at the A.R. Bowman Museum, which traces the region's history through exhibits, artifacts, displays, and more. Even with such remarkable history, Prineville’s present and future are no less exciting. A new class of entrepreneurs, for instance, are opening restaurants, breweries, food cart pods, and other exciting businesses to serve locals and visitors alike.

Elsewhere, the bucolic Nestled Inn offers the chance to stay on a 100-acre farm that grows grass and alfalfa; in addition to enjoying a good night's sleep, visitors can hang out with the farm's animals (including cows, alpacas, sheep, and miniature horses) and explore the surrounding hillsides. For a more casual dining experience, Dillon's Grill prides itself on serving burgers crafted with fresh ingredients, authentic barbecue, steak, and seafood—along with 13 rotating taps of quality craft beer from regional breweries. NANCY NENNIG

Board member, meet nancy., prineville lions club.

My husband and I have lived in Prineville for 17 years. I retired from the Banking Industry after 18 years, most recently working for Oregonians Credit Union. I enjoy the trails and camping in the Crook County area.

In addition to that, I have volunteered for the Crooked River roundup for 15 years, am the current President of the Prineville Lions, a member of the Prineville Elks and a Member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

I was an active member of the Chamber Ambassador Committee for 15 years and supported all the Prineville-Crook County Chamber events and projects.

The Prineville Chamber represents all of Crook County and its individuals, organizations and business and I feel with my volunteering and networking I am able to support the Vision and Mission of the organization.

Duane Porter

Meet duane., financial advisor, dfp financial and consulting.

I grew up on a small cattle ranch in rural Southern Oregon which taught me the values of hard work, family, and a rural way of life.  I made the move to Central Oregon in 1993 for all of its beauty and activities.  Over the last 3 decades in Central Oregon, I have seen and experienced the incredible growth and expansion of this wonderful area.  In 2018 my wife and I decided to return to a rural lifestyle in Crook County.  With its diverse community, wide variety, and ever-expanding industry, the area has maintained a small-town rural feel and culture.

In 2019 after 25 years in Insurance and Investments, my wife and I decided to open DFP Financial & Consulting, a Private Wealth Management, Planning, and Consulting Firm.   We completely enjoy the people, community and all Crook County has to offer.  Being part of the Prineville Chamber is an important focus for us to give back to and help the business of the community.

In our spare time we enjoy our family and grandchildren; camping, riding horses and doing all that Central Oregon and Crook County offers, and fly fishing the Crooked River as often as possible.

Andrea weaver, meet andrea., recreation coordinator, crook county parks & recreation, casie allen, board member, meet casie., owner - bayberry lane.

My mom and I own a small downtown boutique called Bayberry Lane. Our motto is local people supporting local people.   We enjoy being able to give back and strive to love the people of Prineville well.

Being on the Chamber Board has allowed me to not only serve and express my opinions as a business owner, but also as a local who wants to foster a community that is able to adapt to change while holding on to their core values.

SHEENA YORK

Meet sheena., signet realty.

I am the Owner & Lead Coordinator at Firefly Events and I have been planning and coordinating events for over a decade.   I also recently took on a role as a local real estate broker here in Crook County.

I grew up around southern Oregon. I made a road trip to Prineville with a cousin, on that trip I was introduced to a handsome young Prineville man that later became my husband. I love Prineville and although I wasn’t raised here over the last 16 years it truly has come to feel like my hometown.

I was working for a business that was a Chamber member and I was looking for opportunities to get involved in the community. After several years of attending Chamber functions I was encouraged to join the Ambassador team and then the Board. It has been a great learning experience and a lot of fun to be part of the Chamber both as a member and on the Board.

I love the weather in Prineville. After growing up in the valley with so many days of rain, I truly appreciated having (mostly) defined seasons. Summertime in Prineville is definitely my all-time favorite! We enjoy paddle boarding at Ochoco reservoir, swimming at the Prineville reservoir, floating the refreshing Crooked River, hiking the Barnes Butte or Chimney Rock trails and riding our ATV’s on the many OHV trails.

Alexandra Greenberg

Vice president, meet alexandra, chiropractor, slater chiropractic.

I was born and raised in Prineville where I graduated from Crook County High School in 2009.  After that, I moved to Portland where I attended both Pacific University and the University of Western States for Chiropractic School.

After ten years, I returned to Prineville and am now an Associate Chiropractor at Slater Chiropractic.

Since moving back, I have enjoyed how close this community is and realized how much I missed all that Crook County has to offer compared to the big city.  I started attending Chamber events to become more involved in our community and am excited to continue working with the Chamber as Vice President of the board.

I love spending my free time with friends and family, and enjoy getting out to explore all of Central Oregon.  I enjoy hiking, rock climbing, camping, kayaking and many other outdoor activities available in this beautiful area I get to call home.

Prineville

• Prineville is the oldest city east of the Cascades • Meadow Lakes Golf Course is ingenious solution to protect environment

Located on the Crooked River, Prineville is a combination of fascinating history and scenic pristine outdoors with a variety of recreational opportunities including rockhounding, fishing, hiking, and boating.

Surrounded by hills and rock formation, Prineville quite literally sits on a volcano. The Crooked River caldera is an ancient, currently extinct, volcano, which last erupted about 29.5 million years ago. The caldera’s diameter of about 22 miles x 15 miles that makes it one of the biggest in the United States – and the city is nestled almost right in its middle.

Brief History

The oldest city east of the Cascades, Prineville was incorporated on October 23, 1872. The city was a part of Wasco County until Crook County was created in 1882, with Prineville as the county seat. The city received name after Barney Prine, one of the first merchants who settled in the area.

The community was thriving until 1911, when the railway built by Oregon Trunk Railways and Union Pacific from the Columbia River southwards, bypassed the city. The business started leaving the area for the cities with better railroad access. Prineville, however, instead of resigning to its fate, raised money and built its own railway, which connected the town to the main line 19 miles away.

The city's railway became operational in 1918 and connected the town to Redmond, Oregon. After struggling at the beginning, the railroad managed to become profitable in 1939, with sawmills as its main customers. For that very reason, the railway’s revenues decreased dramatically, when the mills shut down in the 2000s. Today, the railway is still in use servicing some of the region’s industries.

Another noteworthy company connected to Prineville is Les Schwab Tire Centers, a major tire retail chain, which has been associated with the city since the company’s foundation in 1952. In 2006, Les Schwab announced the relocation of its headquarters to Bend, Oregon, resulting in the loss of 320 jobs for Prineville. For a city of slightly over 9,000 residents, that was a big blow. Prineville, however, managed to compensate that loss by Federal jobs with the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service, while housing boom and developing tourist industry helped diversify the local economy.

Among other positive contributions to the city, an economy was a construction of Apple and Facebook data centers in the Prineville area. Crook County was hit by the Great Recession more than any county in Oregon. According to Judge Mike McCabe, administrator for Crook County, construction of the data centers that brought hundreds of temporary jobs “couldn't happen at a better time".

‘I did what needed to be done’: Crook County man talks about finding, helping driver badly injured in rollover crash

visit prineville oregon

(Update: adding video, comments by man who went to help; driver in improving condition)

PRINEVILLE, Ore. (KTVZ) – A Crook County resident who heard the sounds of a very bad late-night crash last weekend stepped out of his parents' house and stepped up to find the wreck, then the critically injured man thrown from it, and took other steps that he insists were not heroic -- just doing what needed to be done.

A Prineville man was critically injured in the rollover crash of a pickup truck late Saturday night on NE Mill Creek Road near Ochoco Reservoir east of Prineville, sheriff’s deputies said.

Tire treads on the hill side and debris in a Prineville a field were still visible Wednesday, four days after the crash.

Sam Zurcher, the first to arrive on the scene, was glad he went to help:  "I was the only one that actually responded to the noise and came down here. And as far as it was off the road down here, it's very likely it would not have been discovered until daylight the next morning."

Late Saturday night, Zurcher heard a truck crashing just a few feet above his parent's house off Mill Creek Road and alerted his mom to call 911

"There were two other cars that went driving by, and I managed to flag them down," Zurcher said. "There was another guy that hopped out and he followed me down to the wreck, and we had to go over the fence and down to the truck."

Zurcher recalls the two making their way to the wreckage in the dark, with only the light from a cellphone to guide them.

"My heart just starts beating, because I have no idea what I'm going to be finding," Zurcher recalls. "Luckily, when I actually come up on to the person, he was still breathing. He was unconscious. I tried to get him to respond to verbal commands and, you know, he didn't."

First responders arrived within minutes and were able to put the driver on a backboard, to be flown by Life Flight helicopter to St. Charles Bend.

Sheriff's Sgt. Javier Sanchez had some good news in an update Wednesday: "As of Wednesday, the driver is still at St. Charles, but his condition is improving."

Zurcher recalled, "There was a lot of relief, but also there's that numbness of, you know, you're not quite sure how to react. And so I was just like sitting there, watching the helicopter fly in, and you're just like, 'Wow,. Wow.' But I'm glad that it turned out better than it was."

Zurcher tells NewsChannel 21 he had to use his body weight to lower the wire fence in order for paramedics to reach the driver, who had been thrown from the pickup and was found a few yards to the right of a tree.

In response to comments about his heroic behavior, Zurcher said, "I am proud of myself, that I was able to respond appropriately, and I was able to take care of the situation. But I don't feel it was a major heroic moment because, you know, I did what needed to be done."

A few years back, Zurcher was in a similar situation -- and if it weren't for a passerby, he may not have survived his own crash. He figures his training as a Boy Scout (their motto: Be Prepared) -- also was key.

"It all goes back to the Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you," Zurcher said. "You know, just react to things. Don't assume somebody else is going to do it."

Deputies responded around 11:15 p.m. Saturday to the reported crash, Sanchez said.

Arriving deputies learned a Dodge pickup had left the road and overturned, throwing the driver from the vehicle, Sanchez said. The man, whose name was withheld at the family’s request, was alone in the truck.

The driver was unconscious when found and when deputies arrived. Sanchez said Crook County Fire & Rescue brought the driver to the intersection of Mill Creek Road and Highway 26, where it was temporarily closed by Oregon State Police for a Life Flight helicopter to land. He was flown to St. Charles Bend.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation is continuing, Sanchez said.

The Crook County Road Department responded to clear the road of gravel and debris. The sheriff’s office thanked the agencies who helped with the crash, as well as STAR Towing.

“The Crook County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the driver for his complete recovery, and his family as they deal with this terrible accident,” Sanchez said in a news release.

NewsChannel 21 first heard Monday from Zurcher, who said he discovered the crash victim on Saturday, "which happens to be my birthday."

Here's how he first told us in an email how it all happened:

"Around 11:05 I was in my parent's home just above the crash site. I heard a very distinct crash that I knew was a rollover accident. I immediately exited the house and drove down to Mill Creek road where I located the destroyed pickup.

"No one was inside the vehicle and I did not see anyone near the truck. I didn't have cell service so I quickly drove back to the house and told my 89-year-old mom to call 911. I then returned to the crash scene and flagged down two passing cars. Another man from one of the cars followed me down to the wreck using our cell phone lights to search ahead of us. He double checked to see if the driver was inside or under the vehicle while I began a search of the area.

"I followed a trail of debris and located the driver several feet ahead of where the vehicle ejected him. He was unconscious, breathing and making small vocalizations. He did not respond to my voice or when the other man touched his hand. I told the other man to avoid moving the injured driver and stay with him while I searched a wider area in case there were other occupants who had been ejected. I found none.

"At that point, my 89-year-old father arrived and passed a blanket down to us to help keep the injured driver warm.

"Police officers and paramedics arrived quickly and worked efficiently to get the injured driver onto a stretcher and carry him up to the ambulance. I used my body weight to push down the fence they had to cross to help them avoid tripping over it. Shortly after one of the deputies took my statement and I returned to my home, where I watched the Life Flight helicopter fly in and transport the injured man.

"I was concerned about the young man and was left wondering if he had survived. I did a Google search where I found the KTVZ article and to my relief it was reported that he was still alive in critical condition at the hospital. I am hoping that he can fully recover.

"Had I not heard the crash and investigated the situation the injured driver would likely have not been found until the next morning. Things could have very well turned for the worst if that had happened.

"I do not point this out to boast or take credit. I say it to remind others that you have to act when you suspect an emergency is taking place. It is best to investigate and confirm the situation versus dismissing the possibility or assuming someone else will look into it."

Prineville man who funded ‘grotesque’ monkey torture, mutilation videos sentenced to prison

Editor’s Note: This story includes details of animal abuse that some readers may find disturbing.

PORTLAND, Ore. ( KOIN ) – The Prineville man who pleaded guilty to his involvement in the torture, mutilation and murder of monkeys in online videos has received his sentence, the Oregon district attorney announced Wednesday.

David Christopher Noble, 48, will serve four years in federal prison and another three years of supervised release after he sent money overseas to fund videos of monkey abuse between January 2022 and February 2023.

Amber Alert murder victim was part of child rape case against suspect, police say

“The victims in this case cannot speak for themselves, but the impact of the grotesque violence brought upon them is unmistakable,” said Nathan J. Lichvarcik, chief of the district attorney’s office in Eugene.

Noble managed an online group that allowed people to fundraise, contribute and distribute the abusive content. Officials reported finding around 50 animal abuse videos in his home as well as multiple guns and ammunition.

The extent of Noble’s actions was detailed in a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office:

In Noble’s messages to the group, he expressed his enjoyment of videos depicting the torture and murder of long-tailed macaques, which members of the group, including Noble, referred to as “rats.” In one message to the group sent in June 2022, Noble expressed that the only thing he did not like in abuse videos was when the torturers “kill the rats too quickly,” and he further expressed a desire that they “keep it alive make it suffer make sure it knows to fear you and that you end its existence at any time.” In another message, Noble claimed “the noises they make from pain and abuse are some of my favorite sounds.”

Special Agent Robert Hammer said, “Noble’s depraved actions not only inflicted unspeakable agony upon innocent creatures but also tainted the very essence of humanity’s moral fiber.”

In May 2023, a federal grand jury in Eugene indicted Noble “with conspiring to engage in animal crushing and creating and distributing animal crush videos, creating animal crush videos, and illegally possessing a firearm as a dishonorably discharged person.”

Noble had previously been dismissed as a U.S. Air Force officer in 2006 to serve six months in military custody for fraud and an unprofessional relationship.

According to the Oregon District Attorney’s Office, Noble moved from Prineville to Henderson, Nev., after officers searched his home. Law enforcement found and arrested him in June 2023, where he made his first court appearance before returning to Oregon a month later.

After his prison sentence, Noble will serve three years of supervised release.
