Iceland is located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a mostly underwater mountain range. This ridge is a meeting point for two tectonic plates (You can see the boundary between them at Þingvellir National Park). When these plates move, magma from the Earth’s mantle rises to the surface, sometimes in the form of a volcanic eruption. Furthermore, Iceland is also located on what scientists call a ‘hot spot’, a location where magma is very close to the surface. 

Scientists monitor all active volcanoes in Iceland, especially those that are erupting. They measure seismic activity, volcanic gases, and lava flow. When all of these start to decrease, the volcano is likely about to stop erupting. At a point, there will be no signs of an active magma chamber beneath the volcano. When the magma chamber has been empty for a long time (thousands of years), you can even visit inside that volcano. Kerið Crater Lake is considered to be a former volcano that collapsed after its magma chamber was depleted. 

Scientists in Iceland monitor all volcanoes here. They measure seismic activity, such as the frequency and intensity of earthquakes. They also look at the swelling of the ground, changes in heat, and an increase in the volcano’s gases. Suppose a volcano begins to show signs of eruption. In that case, scientists will warn all those nearby, asking them to stay away from the area. Note that volcanoes can show some of these signs without actually erupting.

It is hard to say how long a volcanic eruption will last. Some only last a few days, while others can go on for years. 

The most active volcano in Iceland is Mt. Hekla. Its first recorded eruption was in 1104, and since then, it has erupted 18 times; the last time was in 2000. Other active volcanoes are Grímsvötn, Katla, Askja, and Krafla. Hekla and Grímsvötn have both been showing signs of unrest recently, so we might see an eruption there soon. Both volcanoes are too far away from human habitation to cause any alarm. Surprisingly, the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano (which stopped air traffic a decade ago) and Fagradalsfjall (which is currently erupting) are not one of the most active volcanoes in Iceland.

We crossed over the South Iceland farmlands where we soaked in incredible views of Hekla (which we were told could erupt at literally any time!).

What volcanoes can I see in Iceland?

To enter the magma chamber, it’s a 6 minute elevator ride. Expect to spend 5 to 6 hours visiting this volcano.

Eyjafjallajokull : This is an active volcano that last erupted in 2010 and caused a massive ash cloud that disrupted air travel in Europe. You may remember that air travel was redirected for some time due to the ash cloud. To get there is about about an hour and a half ride from Reykjavik. These tours take a scenic ride along the coast with views of waterfalls and black sand beaches. Expect to pend the entire day doing one of these tours.

Fagradalsfjall : This is an active volcano that last erupted in August 2022 and created a new lava field in the Geldingadalur Valley. Fagradalsfjall is only 25 miles from Reykjavik and less than an hour ride. Here you will need to do a roughly two hour hike from the parking lot to the volcano. There is more here to see than the volcano with geysers, crates and several lakes.

The biggest advantage is that a self-drive tour of the Iceland volcanoes allows you to choose your own itinerary and stops. Renting a car allows you to access remote and less crowded parts of Iceland, such as the Westfjords, the Eastfjords or the Highlands.

First of all, it should be mentioned that Iceland has way more geothermal activity than any other country on earth. There are nearly 1,500 hot springs on the island, which means that a lot of heat gets trapped beneath the ground. This is why Iceland has so many volcanoes - the heat underneath the ground has a way of pushing itself to the surface, which is why there are so many volcanoes here! Some of these volcanoes have erupted multiple times in the past, and they're ready to do it again!

In Iceland, there is an incredible diversity in the types of volcanic eruptions. Here there will be eruptions under a glacier, in the sea, mud eruptions, fluvial eruptions and explosive eruptions of all shapes and sizes. It also happens that soda changes e.g. from igneous eruption or explosive eruption to lava eruption. It happened, for example, in the Surtseyjar eruption, to begin with it was a powerful igneous eruption in the sea, but when an island had formed, lava began to flow - to the great satisfaction of scientists and others because it strengthened the island a lot against the invasion of the sea.

Volcano Eruptions 2021-2023 on Reykjanes Peninsula

Prior to the 2021 eruption, Fagradalsfjall was an inconspicuous mountain ridge, with elevation of less than 400 meters above sea level. It had remained inactive for a 6000 years or more. In contrast, Geldingadalur experienced an eruption around 800 years ago, being the most recent eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula. It took place between 1210 and 1240 AD, known as the Reykjanes Fires.

Fagradalsfjall volcano eruption 2021

The Fagradalsfjall eruption, which began in March 2021, marked the start of a new era of volcanic activity on Reykjanes peninsula. This eruption showcased Iceland’s breathtaking natural beauty, with rivers of molten lava flowing from the fissure and fiery displays illuminating the night sky. Fagradalsfjall quickly became a popular hiking destination, offering visitors a rare opportunity to witness a volcanic eruption up close.

The Fagradalsfjall volcano eruption lasted for half a year, but the area remained active and continued attracting visitors joining Iceland volcano tours.

Meradalir Volcano eruption 2022

Less than a year after that, a new eruption started in Meradalir, an adjacent valley to Fagradalsfjall. After several days of frequent earthquakes, lava flow began on August 3rd 2022. Despite the fissure opening in a more remote location than Fagradalsfjall, around 2,000 people visited the eruption site on the first day!

However, the Meradalir eruption turned out to be considerably shorter than the previous one, ceasing after only 3 weeks.

Litli-Hrútur Volcano eruption 2023

To continue the tradition of Icelandic yearly volcano, another fissure opened near Litli-Hrútur on July 10th, 2023. From the start the eruption looked to be larger than the preceding ones, with a tenfold lava flow compared to Faradalsfjall.

Contrary to the predictions, the flow decreased rapidly within the first days of Litli Hrutur eruption. It continued decreasing until August 5th, when it ceased completely.

Sundhnúkur Volcano Eruption in 2023

In the ever-changing landscape of Iceland, a remarkable new volcanic eruption occurred at Sundhnúkur on December 18th at 22:17. This event marks the largest eruption in recent times on the Reykjanes Peninsula, featuring an impressive 4 km long fissure and an estimated lava flow of 250 cubic meters per second.

Remarkably, this eruption has not impacted air travel and currently poses no threat to overall safety in Iceland. However, for the immediate safety of visitors and locals, the area near the eruption site remains off-limits. Situated close to the town of Grindavik, the geothermal power plant, and the iconic Blue Lagoon , this volcanic activity has garnered significant attention. Many people think that the new activity is a reason not to visit Iceland , but I highly disagree!

As of November 2023, Fagradalsfjall is ready to go again with an eruption scheduled any day now. The lava show that it will provide is set to be nothing short of spectacular.

However, do not fret if you aren’t planning on visiting Iceland soon as the cooled lava fields are equally as wonderful. And, you may have more chance of your excursion actually going ahead if an eruption isn’t currently happening as it is much less risky.

The tour departs early in the morning, giving you plenty of time for your journey to the Reykjanes Peninsula. The guided day tour will take you to the Reykjanes Geopark to discover the smoking Fagradalsfjall volcano and its newest lava fields.

You really get the most for your money on this tour with plenty of stop-offs made during your trip.

You’ll get to walk between two continents and cross a bridge between a fissure, marvel at the Seltún Geothermal Area with its bubbling mud pools and steaming hot springs and visit the lava rock pools along the Atlantic Ocean.

The highlight of the tour is the hike up a huge ridge to observe the Fagradalsfjall volcano and its impressive lava fields. You’ll see the marvellous crater from a safe distance and get wonderful views at such a huge height.

You are encouraged to go down to the lava fields and touch the cooled lava by the guides – a really cool experience as it is still molten just a few dozen metres back!

Our guide was so lovely and had a wealth of knowledge about the area and previous eruptions. The group size was nice too with just enough of us to fill a small minibus. The guide hiked with us to the top and was happy to take our photo at the summit with the cascading lava fields in the background.

The restaurant we stopped at for lunch was quite nice and not too expensive.

Reykjavik: Guided Tour to Volcano and Reykjanes Geopark is a fabulous option overall and you really get what you pay for with lots of stops along the route.

We didn’t feel overly rushed at any of the stops and there was enough time to really take in the views and atmosphere without getting bored.

5. Can you go inside a dormant volcano?

In Iceland you can descend deep into a magma chamber to see the inside of a volcano. Aptly named the “Inside the Volcano” tour, this excursion takes you into the dormant crater of Thrihnukagigur, which you can enjoy on a day trip from Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital.

As well as venturing into a dormant magma chamber, you can go lava caving in Iceland. Walk through underground tunnels formed by volcanic activity, passing stalagmites and stalactites as you go. You can do this while based in the capital, or Lake Mývatn in North Iceland.

6. How close is Fagradalsfjall volcano to Reykjavík?

You’ve probably heard about the Fagradalsfjall volcano in southwest Iceland. Located on the Reykjanes peninsula, it’s around 30 kilometres (19 miles) away from Reykjavík. This means the local authorities don’t consider the volcano a threat to Iceland’s capital.

7. How do I get to Fagradalsfjall volcano in Iceland?

The latest eruption at Fagradalsfjall ended in early August 2023, so you won’t be able to glimpse molten lava at the site. That said, if you’d like to see freshly formed lava fields for yourself, you might want to stop off here.

Before you decide to visit, we recommend checking these websites for up-to-date information on access to Fagradalsfjall and Iceland’s volcanic activity: • Safe Travel Iceland – for any country-wide safety alerts  • Icelandic Met Office – for the weather forecast and updates on seismic activity • Visit Reykjanes – for information on the hiking routes and parking at Fagradalsfjall

If it’s safe to go to Fagradalsfjall, you can get to the recent eruption sites by following one of the trails created by the Icelandic authorities. During your visit, keep to the marked routes and don’t walk on any fresh lava fields. This is because although the lava fields may look solid, they can be fragile and unstable underfoot.

Please also keep in mind that these trails are only suitable for fit and experienced hikers. 

For example, the return trip to the most recent eruption site near Litli-Hrútur is 20 kilometres (12.5 miles) over rough ground and steep slopes. So it could take anywhere from 5 to 8 hours to complete the hike. A day bag with warm and waterproof clothing, along with plenty of water and food is essential for the hike.

It’s also worth knowing that the routes at Fagradalsfjall may be closed or redirected at short notice. This could happen if a new eruption begins or if seismic activity is detected in the region. 

8. When is a good time to visit Iceland to see volcanoes?

Although you can technically see volcanoes in Iceland year round, certain parts of the country are only accessible in the summer season. For example, most of the roads into the central highland region open in May or June and close in September.

Additionally, the ideal time for hiking in Iceland is between May and September, when the weather is at its best. This means that if you’d like to go trekking in Landmannalaugar or the Hveradalir geothermal valley, you’ll need to visit Iceland in summer .

Certain volcanic experiences are not available in winter either, such as the “Inside the Volcano” tour. You can enjoy this caving excursion at Thrihnukagigur between May and October only.

The best time to go to Iceland varies depending on the other activities you want to do though. Winter may not be a good time of year for hiking, but it has its own special appeal for other reasons.

If you dream of chasing the northern lights in Iceland , you should time your trip for the winter. That’s because you can expect dark nights between mid-September until mid-April, and you need darkness to see the colours in the sky.

Best Active Volcano Tours in Iceland – 2024 Eruption UPDATE March

The volcano in Iceland on the Reykjanes peninsula near Grindavik has been active again in 2024. We compiled the selection of the best volcano tours   that are actively operating right now – in 2024 .

Grindavik volcano is currently experiencing periods of “flowing lava” and periods of “pauses,” switching irregularly in between each other. This is expected to continue for a longer time. However, when the eruption with bursting lava is on, volcano helicopter tours are quickly selling out. This is the safest (and often the only) option to see the volcano.

As of March 2024, it’s forbidden to visit the eruption site on your own! The only way to see the active volcano is to take a HELICOPTER ERUPTION TOUR.

First of all, Sundhnúksgígar is NOT a tourist eruption! It’s big and may be dangerous. The only safe way to see the active volcano right now is to observe it from a safe distance from the bird’s eye viewpoint of a helicopter tour.

The town of Grindavik, the geothermal power plant in Svartsengi, and Blue lagoon are all in real threat because of the fissures and magma under the surface.

Unfortunately, many Grindavik residents have lost and will lose their homes because of this eruption. Please support them as much as you can and be thoughtful when it comes to discussing seeing the volcano. It may be a sensitive matter to many of them.

Active Volcano Tours – What to Expect

As of 2024 ONLY HELICOPTER tours are operating at Sundhnúksgígar. All hikes/roads/buses are strictly forbidden and not running!

The volcano and lava flow change every day , so it’s essential to adhere to all rules set by Icelandic Civil Protection office and follow all the advice on Icelandic SafeTravel website .

The same applies to toxic gases! If you don’t want to keep track of all the safety guidelines and yet you want to see this spectacular natural wonder, it’s best to take the guided tour.

The summer 2023 Reykjanes volcano eruption in Iceland

There are two types of tours based on the number of participants :

• Group tours – typically 6 to 20 participants
• Private tours – only you and your group

You can visit the volcano eruption on three different kinds of tours :

• Hiking tours – best for budget travelers and the physically fit [NOT OPERATING NOW]
• Helicopter tours – best and closest aerial view, the most expensive
• Airplane tours – less expensive than helicopter, less flexible

Sundhnúksgígar Volcano Hiking tour 2023

This was one of the first tours that will take you directly to the eruption site of Litli-Hrútur, “The Little Ram”!

This is a HARD level hike . It is a 20km round-trip, i.e., about 8-10 hours of hiking . It is suitable for ages 14 and older and those comfortable hiking long distances with difficult terrain.

The tour provides blankets and hot chocolate/tea. Ponchos and Hiking Boots are available for rental if asked for in advance. All participants are REQUIRED to have good, sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, and food for this tour.

A Difficult Hiking Volcano tour to the Sundhnúksgígar eruption site

This hike up to Litli Hrutur Active Volcano was quite hard. You need to be able to walk up to 9km each way , but you will enjoy unbelievable views of lava fields and an ongoing eruption.

Daylight time, as well as nighttime, are both fascinating for experiencing the volcanic eruption. If you have the opportunity, go see the volcano during the day and also during the night!

Book the tours as soon as possible! They can quickly sell out for an entire summer. Iceland does not have as many tour operators and guides as tourists! You may always reschedule or cancel within the cancellation policy of a particular tour company.

A most recent eruption started on the 3rd of August 2022 in Mt. Fagradalsfjall and ended on September 21st. Even though the eruption site is currently dormant, geologists forecast that this eruption is only a small chapter of a bigger story. Iceland is likely entering a volcanic period with many more eruptions like this on the Reykjanes Peninsula.

These last two volcanic eruptions have not posed any threat to the nearby populated areas or infrastructure. Neither have they caused any disruption to international aviation.

So if you have booked a flight or a tour in Iceland, you can continue with your travel plans.

It's important to dress according to weather and wear good hiking shoes. We recommend packing a lunch, as the hike to the eruption site is challenging and can take up to 2 hours.

Do it. No regrets! Just be on time! I loved the tour. Kristoff was our guide. He was funny, informative and prompt. (and excellent driver!) We went to visit falls, ice lagoon, Black Sand beach, Diamond beach, churches, etc. (Ice cave experience coming) All stops were highlights. I learned so much about Iceland. Ice cave - (for us) Amazing experience! Just be ready to walk/hike a bit in all weather condition. Helmet and foot spikes(?) are provided, but I also recommend to put sunglasses and cover mouth (for warmth and to prevent dusts and sand(?) going into eyes and mouth). Ice cave was beautiful and there were photo stops along the route. I also loved going to Ice cave and coming out. (The icy hike) Other glacial-related stops was great as well! My group was mostly on time. If you're more than 2-3 minutes late than instructed, then that's very late. The guide asked us if we wanted to go to sit down restaurant for lunch or survive on snack/hotdog to see more things, and I'm so glad our group chose the latter. Two days well packed into amazing places of Iceland! I would choose Nicetravel for other tours if I ever go back to Iceland.

He was so funny and personable and created a sense of safety, adventure, and coziness. It is halfway to Reykjavik (about 20 minutes driving from Keflavik airport) with a parking lot. Is it safe to hike up to the eruption site?

Authorities in Iceland have taken the necessary steps to ensure everyone's safety. Hiking in the area will only be allowed once they give the go-ahead. Keep an eye on the situation and regular updates .

When exploring volcanic areas, it's crucial to maintain a safe distance, be mindful of gas exposure, and know the direction of the wind to avoid any mishaps.

Is it possible to go to the restroom during the hike?

There are no restrooms at the area just nature 😊 We do recommend that people use the restrooms in Grindavík where we stop for lunch before we start the hike.

Do I Need A Guide To Accompany Me To The Eruption Site?

It is not obligatory to be accompanied by a professional guide to visit the site. However, taking a guided tour is safer than visiting the eruption site as fellow travelers will accompany you, and a local professional guide will ensure your safety.

Is it allowed to walk on the lava?

According to the Environmental Agency of Iceland, walking on the lava is forbidden and can be very dangerous. The top layer can easily break when stepped on, causing hazards to people. The lava at Fagradalsfjall Volcano is a unique geological monument that we must respect and protect. It is important for visitors to leave no traces such as throwing stones at the lava or making inscriptions on it. Lavas are under special protection according to art. 61 of the Nature Conservation Act. One of the biggest risks of walking on new lava is breaking the top layer over an unknown lava tube. Falling into a lava tube that's still several hundred degrees Celcius can lead to injuries.

The scene is as spectacular as it is dangerous: flowing rivers of shimmering lava and a dramatic plume of toxic gas.

That image has been the reality for much of the past four months in the Reykjanes Peninsula in southern Iceland, which the country’s tourism website has called a “geological wonder where lighthouses outnumber villages.”

A series of volcano eruptions began in December after hundreds of earthquakes shook the peninsula, cracking open a fissure that sent lava spewing into a residential neighborhood for the first time in more than four decades. The volcanic system has erupted several more times since then.

Grindavik, a fishing town of more than 3,500 people about 30 miles southwest of the country’s capital, Reykjavik, has been evacuated, and the nearby Blue Lagoon, a popular geothermal spa, has been largely closed since early November.

While much of life goes on in the rest of Iceland, the eruptions have had an effect beyond the peninsula, disrupting the tourism operations of a country that relies heavily on visitors .

Icelandair said it has seen a negative impact on bookings because of the threat of the eruptions. While the overall number of passengers carried by the airline in February increased compared to last year, the number flying to Iceland dropped by 8 percent, according to the airline.

While the eruptions continue, the situation has been “steady” this week, according to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the country’s weather service. But lava continues to flow from three craters toward Grindavik, the service said.

The eruptions also produce high levels of gas pollution. The concentration of sulfur dioxide in the air is “very unhealthy,” according to the Met Office, which added that “people are likely to experience respiratory symptoms if exposed.”

The Blue Lagoon, a spa and hotel complex in Grindavik, is closed at the moment. It first temporarily shut its doors in November after thousands of earthquakes, signs of the impending eruption, hit the region.

The resort has reopened occasionally, but has been closed for more than 85 days since then, the hotel said in an email. It is currently on its sixth closure since Nov. 9.

Lava damaged several houses in Grindavik when it breached a defense wall that was supposed to route it away from the town.

Around the town, earthquakes caused cracks in the streets. Breaks in the roads have been filled with gravel.

The authorities continue to warn visitors to stay away from the eruption site. “The edges of the new lava field are unstable and large chunks of lava can fall suddenly,” the Met Office said,

Iceland volcano erupts: See images of flowing lava, smoke from fourth eruption in three months

Iceland has declared a state of emergency after a volcano erupted for the fourth time in three months.

The eruption opened a fissure almost 2 miles long between Stóra-Skógfell and Hagafell mountains on the Reykjanes Peninsula, according to Iceland's Meteorological Office, which had been warning for weeks about the eruption due to magma accumulating underground.

Volcanic eruptions had slowed significantly, but the eruption has not yet ended, according to an update issued Sunday by Iceland's Meteorological Office . Lava continues to flow from the fissure, and a lava front extends to the west and the south, now about 820 feet from Suðurstrandarvegur – the main road on the southern coast of the Reykjanes Peninsula.

The lava has moved at an average speed of about 39 feet per hour, and it could take an additional 20 hours to reach the main road at that speed, the meteorological office said.

The volcano erupted a few miles northeast of the coastal town Grindavik, about 30 miles southwest of Iceland's capital city, Reykjavik. Grindavik was previously evacuated in November when a series of earthquakes from the Svartsengi volcanic system opened large cracks north of town.

No flights have been reported to be disrupted by the eruption at Kaflavik , Iceland's main airport, or at other regional airports.

No deaths have been confirmed from the four eruptions, but the Associated Press reported one worker has been declared missing after reportedly falling into a volcanic fissure.

Iceland's Blue Lagoon evacuated, temporarily closed after eruption

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the Blue Lagoon thermal spa when the eruption began. Blue Lagoon, one of the top tourist destinations in the country, posted on its website Sunday that it was evacuated and has temporarily closed all operational units. It will remain closed through at least Tuesday, March 19.

"Despite these recent events, all our facilities remain in good condition and are surrounded by protective barriers designed to safeguard Blue Lagoon's vital infrastructure against potential lava flows," according to a statement on Blue Lagoon's website.

Iceland volcano: Gigantic plume of toxic gas from latest eruption is moving across Europe, satellite data shows

A massive column of sulfur dioxide that was pumped out by the erupting volcano on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula is currently traveling across northern Europe. Scientists are concerned it could impact the ozone layer.

Scientists are tracking a massive plume of toxic gas moving across northern Europe that was spat out by the ongoing volcanic eruption in Iceland. The gas cloud is unlikely to cause any serious health problems. However, it could impact the ozone hole above the Arctic , experts warn.

On March 16, an underground volcano in Icealnd's Reykjanes Peninsula blew its top for the fourth time in as many months, opening up the largest fissure of the current eruption cycle and unleashing a massive lava flow that narrowly missed the evacuated town of Grindavík. There were initially fears that the lava flow could reach the sea and unleash a plume of hydrochloric acid, which would have been "life-threatening" to anyone close to the coastline, Live Science previously reported. However, the lava never reached the shore. 

But the eruption did release sulfur dioxide — a colorless, toxic gas that can be extremely dangerous in high concentrations.  

On March 17, the volcano was spitting out around 110 pounds (50 kilograms) of sulfur dioxide every second, according to a translated statement from the Icelandic Met Office . Workers at the nearby Svartsengi power plant were evacuated from the facility due to high levels of the gas, Icelandic news site RÚV reported , and locals were temporarily warned to stay inside, according to Iceland's Civil Protection .   

Sulfur dioxide emissions have diminished significantly since March 18, but new data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) — part of the European Union's Copernicus program, which tracks weather and climate changes using satellite data — shows that the initial outpouring of gas formed a 3-mile-tall (5 kilometers) concentrated column that has since blown toward other countries in northern Europe.

The gas plume has already passed above the U.K. and is currently approaching Scandinavia, where it will begin to dissipate before entering Russia.

CAMS will continue to track the plume "although we don't expect there to be any impact on surface air quality or climate," senior CAMS scientist Mark Parrington said in a statement emailed to Live Science.

However, tracking sulfur dioxide emissions is still important because the gas can react with atmospheric ozone molecules, depleting the amount of this protective substance in the ozone layer, which shields Earth's surface from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. 

In October 2023, scientists partially attributed the near-record-largest ozone hole above Antarctica to the 2022 eruption of an underwater volcano in Tonga, which released high levels of water vapor into the atmosphere that may have depleted ozone levels.

Experts predict that the recent eruptions in Iceland could be the beginning of a new centuries-long period of activity in the region. As a result, the amount of sulfur dioxide being pumped toward the Arctic could also rise over the next few years, which could lead to larger northern ozone holes in the future.

"The impacts of the volcanic eruptions in Iceland in the atmosphere have not yet been so severe, but it is relevant to keep monitoring the evolution of the situation," CAMS director Laurence Rouil said in the statement.
