This Airport Guide sets out what passengers can expect to see and do in the international wing at Terminal 2 ( T2 ) of Greater Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport  (IATA:  MNL  / ICAO:  RPLL / Abbrev. : NAIA )

NOTE: This Airport Guide and the separate posts linked to it should be used only for general guidance and planning purposes. Details may change at any moment and without prior notice.

For the sake of brevity, abbreviations and IATA codes will be used throughout this post in place of full airline or airport names – e.g.; “T2” instead of “Terminal 2”, “MNL” instead of “Ninoy Aquino International Airport”.

Completed in 1999 according to plans drawn up by the engineering arm of Aéroports de Paris, T2 was originally designed to serve as a purely domestic terminal. With that in mind, it’s easier to understand why this building – despite its sleek, clean, and visually appealing architecture – seems so ill-suited to the job of handling international flights. The structure was not meant to have immigration checkpoints, customs booths, transit zones, or quarantine screening facilities, all of which had to be shoehorned into whatever space was available.

Unlike MNL’s other terminals – each of which serves multiple airlines –  T2 is used exclusively by flag carrier Philippine Airlines  (IATA code: PR) . Because T2 is unable to support all PR operations under one roof, a limited number of the airline’s international flights use  Terminal 1  instead. Consult your booking/ticket details or contact PR directly to confirm which terminal your flight will depart from/arrive at. (This is important as MNL’s terminals are not physically connected and it takes time to travel between them.)

IMPORTANT UPDATE: All international flights operated by Philippine Airlines (PR) will move to T1 by 16 June 2023 ( source ). For more information, consult PR’s official website and verified social media channels.

Note that this guide only covers the international wing of T2, which is housed in the northern section of the building. The domestic wing in T2’s southern half is not covered here.

ACCESS AND TRANSPORTATION

Like most major airport terminals, MNL T2 has separate landside and airside zones.

The landside zone of T2 includes the publicly accessible area before immigration and final security. As used within this guide (and the sub-guides linked to it), the term “landside” also encompasses certain parts of the terminal that can be entered only by passengers – such as the area around the check-in counters – if these are located before the main pre-departure security checkpoint.

The airside zone of T2 covers the restricted, passengers-only area after immigration and final security. This includes the boarding gates, the nearby holding areas, and all lounges and retail/dining facilities accessible only to travellers who have completed pre-departure formalities and passed through border control.

Asia powers growth of wholesale tour operator G2

Wholesale tour operator G2 Travel has metamorphosed into a global giant just six years after it was started by top honchos who left Gullivers Travel Associates (GTA) following the latter’s purchase by Kuoni from Travelport.

Built up from scratch, G2 now has 23 offices globally with nearly 1,000 staff serving over 15,000 group tours that book one million room nights. Business grew by 30 per cent last year with Asia a big part of that growth, said director David Littlefair, who was part of the GTA breakaway group that also included GTA founder David Babai.

“We all came from tour operating background… all cut from the same cloth”, said Bangkok-based Littlefair, commenting on G2’s successful growth trajectory on a recent visit to the Philippines to meet travel agency partners.

Amid the spate of mergers and acquisitions in the industry at the time of the breakaway, G2 saw that there was still room for smaller business in the market. “When we started, we might have been a new brand and entity but we have massive amounts of experience and relationships in the market, which is very important in the group sector,” Littlefair explained.

Another edge is Genie, a completely automated system that connects to suppliers, developed by G2’s own in-house technology department.

Littlefair said that of the 30 per cent increase in global business last year, about 60 per cent came from Asia, led by Indonesia and Thailand, while China is fast catching up. Hong Kong has slightly plateaued in the last two years due to its sensitivity to security tensions in Europe, while Singapore is a considerable source of FITs.

Markets like the Philippines, which has yet to reach its full growth potential, is characterised by but bigger groups and longer trip duration of up to 30 days compared with a maximum of 10 days in other source markets.

In Indochina, Vietnam has huge potential and is G2’s biggest market. Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos are starting to have some groups. The latter trio still make up a small percentage of the business but “we want to be there early to cultivate the relationship and to better understand the market,” said Littlefair.

While its focus is on group inbound to Europe, G2 is widening its net beyond the continent to the US – where it opened offices in New York and Los Angeles last year – Canada, South America and Israel, including an office in Tel Aviv.
