    Speed, Distance & Time Calculation

In order to use the above speed, distance & time calculator, or do such math on your own, you will need to know two out of three metrics: speed, distance, time. You will need to convert the metrics to the same time and distance units, e.g. miles, kilometers, meters, yards, feet, and hours, minutes or seconds. For example, if you have speed in mph (miles per hour), time should also be in hours. If you have distance in kilometers, then speed should also be in km/h (kilometers per hour).

The unit of the result will depend on the units you input, but our speed calculator will conveniently display additional units where appropriate.

    Average Speed formula

The formula for average speed, also called average velocity in physics and engineering, is:

where v is the velocity, d is the distance, and t is the time, so you can read it as Speed = Distance / Time . As noted above, make sure you convert the units appropriately first, or use our speed calculator which does that automatically. The resulting unit will depend on the units for both time and distance, so if your input was in miles and hours, the speed will be in mph. If it was in meters and seconds, it will be in m/s (meters per second).

Example: If you took a plane from New York to Los Angeles and the flight was 5 hours of air time, what was the speed of the plane, given that the flight path was 2450 miles? The answer is 2450 / 5 = 490 mph (miles per hour) average speed. If you want the result in km/h, you can convert from miles to km to get 788.58 km/h.

    Distance formula

The formula for distance, if you know time (duration) and the average speed, is:

Example: If a truck travelled at an average speed of 80 km per hour for 4 hours, how many miles did it cover in that time? To find the miles covered, first, calculate 80 * 4 = 320 km, then convert km to miles by dividing by 1.6093 or by using our km to miles converter to get the answer: 198.84 miles.

    Duration (Time) formula

The time, or more precisely, the duration of the trip, can be calculated knowing the distance and the average speed using the formula:

where d is the distance travelled, v is the speed (velocity) and t is the time, so you can read it as Time = Distance / Speed . Make sure you convert the units so both their distance and time components match, or use our trip duration calculator above which will handle conversions automatically. For example, if you have distance in miles and speed in km/h, you will need to convert speed to mph or distance to kilometers. The time unit of the result will match the time unit of the speed measure, so if it is measured in something per hour, the result will be in hours. If it is measured in some unit per second, the result will be in seconds.

Example: If a train can travel 500 miles with an average speed of 50 miles per hour, how long it would take it to complete a 500-mile route? To find the answer, use the formula and substitute the values, resulting in 500 / 50 = 10 hours.

    How to calculate the average speed of a car?

Say you travelled a certain distance with a car or another vehicle and you want to calculate what its average speed was. The easiest way to do that would be by using the calculator above, but if you prefer, you can also do the math yourself. Either way, you need to know the distance to a satisfactory approximation, for which you can use a map (e.g. Google Maps) to measure the distance from point to point. Make sure you measure closely to the path you took, and not via a straight line, unless you travelled by air in which case that would be a good approximation. Of course, having a GPS reading of the distance would be more precise. Then you need to know the travel time. Make sure you subtract any rests or stops you made from the total trip duration.

If the total distance travelled was 500 miles and the time it took you was 5 hours, then your average speed was 500 / 5 = 100 miles per hour (mph). If the distance was 300 kilometers and it took you 5 hours to cover it, your speed was 300 / 5 = 60 km/h (kilometers per hour).

A car can go from rest to 45 km/hr in 5 seconds. What is its acceleration?

Guys how much time will a cyclist take to cover 132 METRES With a speed of 8 km/ph

@Mike Depends on how fast that actually is. For every 10 mph above 60, but below 120, you save 5 seconds a mile. But between the 30-60 area, every ten saves 10 seconds a mile (if I am remembering correctly), and every 10 between 15-30 is 20 seconds. Realistically, it isn't likely isn't worth it, unless it is a relatively straight drive with no stops, in which case you will likely go up a gear for the drive and thus improve gas efficiency for the trip. Only really saves time if it is over long trips 300+ miles (in which case, assuming you were on the interstate) that 5 seconds a mile would save you 25 minutes from the drive, making it go from 4h35m to 4h10m. For me, I have family across the U.S., so family visits are usually 900-1400 miles. Even only driving 5 above usually saves me 90-150 minutes or so (since I often have stretches where I drive on US highways which have 55 mph speed limits)

I would like to know if driving fast is worth it for short trips. If I drive 10 MPH over the speed limit for 10 miles, how much time do i save ? Is there an equation for that ?

If you’re new to exercise, hitting the gym can easily become overwhelming. After all, there are dozens if not hundreds of machines, free weights , cardio equipment , stretching tools, and more scattered around. Where do you even start?

A bit of planning and structure can make fitness less frightening and more fun. Instead of worrying over what you should be doing, how much of it, or for how long, a good beginner workout plan removes the guesswork and lets you focus on what matters; putting in the actual work. This guide has everything you need to get started, no matter your goal.

All fitness enthusiasts, from recreational gym rats to full-time athletes, follow some sort of pre-programmed structure. Periodization , as it’s known, refers to the organizational design of a workout plan that ensures you’re moving toward your goals, not away from them. 

You don’t need to commit to exercise every day to see results, especially as a beginner. In fact, a good three-day plan is more than enough.

You can perform these three workouts however you like over the course of a week, but remember to include at least one day of rest between workouts . For example, a common schedule is to exercise on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

The Workout

You may have very specific goals in mind when deciding to get active, ranging from losing weight to regaining some day-to-day mobility or building muscle .

Regardless, your best bet as a beginner is to start general, developing several athletic qualities like flexibility and strength, and then get specific later on. As such, this plan is designed to improve multiple dimensions of fitness at once.

Day 1 

  • 5 minute cardio warm-up
  • Goblet Box Squat : 3 x 8
  • Assisted Pull-Up : 2 x 10
  • Incline Push-Up : 2 x 10
  • Plank : 3 x 15 seconds
  • 15-20 minutes of low-intensity cardio

How To Progress Your Workout

Here’s the deal: As a beginner, you’re going to make progress faster than you might expect (as long as you’re putting in real effort). However, that doesn’t mean that gains flow freely to ever. As you become more acclimated to the demands of exercise, you’ll need to get crafty about your workouts and incrementally increase the difficulty over time. ( 1 )

This is known as progressive overload , and it needs to be the backbone of your workout plan long-term. Here are three simple ways to progress your workouts, organized by general priority:

This one applies solely to resistance training, but is the most straightforward method of employing progressive overload. If you’re performing an exercise that you can load with additional weight, such as a barbell exercise , you should strive to work with slightly heavier weights over time.

This doesn’t mean you need to slap on 20 extra pounds every week, but you should aim to make small jumps in resistance over time. 

Add Sets or Reps

If you can’t increase the amount of weight you’re lifting, your next best option is to beef up the amount of work you perform. That is, your “ training volume .” The most practical way to do this is to increase the number of repetitions you perform during a set of a given exercise, or add another set altogether.

Reduce Your Rest Times

Another way to amp up the difficulty of your workouts and drive progress is to increase the density of your sessions. Which is to say adjusting the ratio of work to rest you perform.

Almost all physical activity requires brief rest intervals so you can recover for another bout of effort. Over time and as your fitness improves, you should be able to slowly chip away at these “down” periods. Resting for one and a half minutes instead of two minutes shortens your session without removing any of the actual work. 

Change Exercises

Generally speaking, being a chronic “exercise hopper” is a bad thing. Adapting to any physical stressor takes time, and if you don’t give an exercise in your workout plan a fair shot, you might never find out if it’s productive for you.

That said, some scientific research has demonstrated the power of novelty when it comes to exercise. Put simply, rotating through a series of similar movements that work the same muscles may be more effective at creating progress than sticking with the same exercises for months on end. ( 2 )

This doesn’t mean that you should change your workout plan on a weekly (or even monthly, necessarily) basis. However, if you’re a few months into your current routine and feel like progress is slowing down, it may be time to change up what you’re doing. 

Sets and Reps Explained

Almost all physical exercise that isn’t cardiovascular endurance training is organized by sets and reps . A “rep” is a single repetition of a given exercise; think curling a dumbbell up and lowering it back down again. A “set” is a cluster of repetitions performed back-to-back with no rest in-between.

The set-rep notation you’ll see most commonly is “[sets] x [reps]”. For example:

  • Biceps Curl : 3 x 8

This prescription would instruct you to perform eight biceps curls back-to-back, rest for a minute or two, and then repeat it twice more. 

Workout Splits Explained

Workout splits have nothing to do with ballet, yoga, or gymnastics — unless you’re training for flexibility, of course! A “split” is a colloquial term for the general organization behind a workout program .

In real-world terms, splits define the number of days you hit the gym and what you do on those days . For example, a three-day workout split involves exercising thrice per week. People will also commonly design splits around training specific muscle groups (prevalent in bodybuilding) or anatomical functions (think pushing and pulling).

There are also full-body splits, which entail performing a variety of exercises for your entire body multiple times throughout the week. These principles apply to all forms of physical activity: You can have a workout split that contains cardio, stretching, sport-specific practices, and so on. Splits are simply your schedule. 

Beginner Workout Tips

When it comes to separating an average workout from an exceptional one, the devil’s in the details. Getting yourself into the gym or off the couch is half the battle, though. Once you’ve committed to taking the plunge, put these simple tips into practice to enhance your results: 

Start Slowly

The fastest runners in the world didn’t start their training with sprints; they started with jogs. To be successful in any athletic endeavor, especially if you’re new to physical activity, you’ll need to pace yourself. After all, you have to crawl before you can walk.

In real-world terms, this looks like selecting very easy weights during your first few sessions. Don’t be afraid to take ample rest time between sets, or ask a staff member at the gym to advise you on proper technique rather than trying to wing it on a complicated exercise. 

Dress Appropriately 

The saying “look good, feel good” absolutely applies to the gym. Not only will appropriate gymwear help wick sweat and cool your body, you’re more likely to put in a higher amount of effort during your workouts if you’re rocking a killer outfit. 

Bring Music (Or a Friend)

As it turns out, your favorite tunes are good for more than jamming out on the drive to the gym. There’s some interesting science behind auditory stimulation and exercise performance.

Namely, some data has shown that listening to music during exercise can improve pain tolerance, increase motivation , and even boost your strength in some cases. You’ll have a reliable and trusted spotter to help you stay safe while you train, and you’ll also have someone to trade motivation with on your journey. 

Don’t Aim for Perfect

One of the worst things you can do as a beginner on their fitness journey is to obsess over “optimal.” In almost all cases, simply making it into the gym at all is a victory, and will get you closer to your goals than not going at all out of fear of not doing things properly.

When you’re starting out, don’t be afraid to head into the gym and do things wrong . You won’t master a new exercise during your first session, and that’s okay. Over time, many slightly-less-than-perfect sessions will get you much further than a few “perfect” workouts.

What is a good beginner workout routine?

Realistically speaking, a good beginner workout routine is one that you find enjoyable and can stick to. The perfect workout plan doesn’t exist, and forcing yourself to partake in a type of activity you detest isn’t sustainable.

How to Calculate Speed, Distance & Time

Working out speed, distance and time is an important part of many roles, including those in the armed forces or transport industries.

If you are applying for a role in these industries, you may be tested on this as part of your recruitment process. The questions will allow your employer to test your applied mathematical abilities.

How to calculate speed, distance & time: the formula triangle you’ll need?

To work out speed, divide the distance of the journey by the time it took to travel, so speed = distance divided by time. To calculate time, divide the distance by speed. To get the distance, multiply the speed by time.

You may see these equations simplified as s=d/t, where s is speed, d is distance, and t is time.

This formula can be arranged into the triangle above. In the triangle, speed and time form the base, as they are what is multiplied together to work out the distance.

The triangle is an easy way to remember the formula and can save you time when working out your exam questions. The triangle will help you remember the three formulas:

  • The formula of speed is Speed = Distance ÷ Time
  • The formula of time is Time = Distance ÷ Speed
  • The formula of distance is Distance = Speed x Time

The triangle shows you what calculation you should use. As distance is at the top of the triangle, to work it out, you need to multiply speed with time.

As speed and time are at the bottom of the triangle, you need to divide this number from the figure for distance, to work out the correct answer.

When beginning to study for your practice test, make sure you write out the triangle on your paper. This will help you to memorize it.

How to calculate speed

To calculate speed, you need to divide the distance by the time. You can work this out by using the triangle. If you cover up speed, you are left with distance over time.

Here is an example:

If a driver has travelled 180 miles and it took them 3 hours to make that distance, then to work out their speed you would take:

If a driver travelled at 100mph for 4 hours, then to work out the distance you will need to multiply the speed with the time.

The distance is 400 miles.

To work out the time that the journey took, you will need to know the speed of the journey and the distance that was travelled.

If the driver travelled 50 miles at 5mph, then to work out the time taken you would divide:

50miles / 5 miles per hour -\> 50 / 5 = 10

The time taken to travel this distance is 10 miles per hour.

Three example speed/distance/time questions

  • Andy drives his lorry for 400 miles, which takes him 8 hours. Harry drives 200 miles, which takes him 4.5 hours. Who is travelling faster?

Answer: Andy is driving at 50mph, and Harry is driving at 44.44mph. So, Andy is driving faster.

  • Tessa runs a 5km race with her running club every Saturday. She runs this in 40 minutes. If she maintains the same speed, how long would it take her to run the 8km race?

Answer: Her speed is 7.5kph. If she runs 10km at 7.5kph, to work out the time, you need to divide 8 by 7.5, which equals 1.066. If we convert this into hours and minutes, it will take her 1 hour and 4 minutes to run 8km.

  • Hannah goes on a cycling trip. In the first half of the journey, she travels at 10mph for 2 hours. In the second half, she travels at 20mph for 90 minutes. How far does she travel in total?

Answer: In the first half of her journey she travels 20 miles (10 x 2 = 20). In the second half, she travels 30 miles, (20 x 1.5 = 30). 20+30 =50, so she travels 50 miles in total.

Methods to get better at these questions

To improve your skill in answering speed distance time questions, there are two main things you can do.

First, make sure that you are familiar with the formula triangle. The key to answering these questions is knowing the formula inside out, so that you always know what equation to use, whether the exam question is asking you to work out speed or distance.

By making sure you have memorized the formula in all its variations, you will save yourself time when answering questions.

Secondly, you should focus on improving your general mathematical skills. You may get a compound question, which asks you to use the formula in conjunction with other maths skills to work out the answer to the problem.

Train strikes in May 2024: Full list of dates and lines affected

Rail lines are set for disruption in the week following the first May bank holiday as train drivers at 16 rail companies strike on different days.

Train drivers will stage a fresh wave of strikes and overtime bans in May, causing disruption to the rail network.

The strikes are part of a long-running dispute over pay.

Members of Aslef union at 16 rail companies will walk out on different days from 7 to 9 May.

Additionally, all members will refuse to work any overtime from 6 May to 11 May.

Here is a full list of the services affected by strikes and when.

Rail strike dates

Tuesday 7 May

Strikes will affect c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

Wednesday 8 May

Strikes will affect Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Thursday 9 May

Strikes will affect LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express.

Overtime ban dates

From Monday 6 May to Saturday 11 May union members will not work overtime.

Overtime bans, an action short of a strike, means some services may not be running or may be reduced as drivers refuse to work their rest days.

People are advised to check before they travel, as some areas may have no service.

How do strikes and overtime bans affect services?

Strikes tend to mean services on lines where members are participating are extremely affected or cancelled entirely, whereas overtime bans often lead to reduced services.

Are there strikes on the Tube too?

There have been regular strikes on London Underground too recently, and while there aren't any planned walkouts for drivers, customer service managers are set to walk out on Friday 26 April in a dispute over terms and conditions.

There will also be an overtime ban for the customer service managers on the following days:

The Transport Salaried Staffs' Association (TSSA) says the action by its members is likely to cause Tube stations to close at the last minute, including on the Saturday following the strike (27 April), while TfL has said on its website "some stations may need to close at short notice".

Despite the warning, a TfL spokesperson has said they aren't expecting significant disruption.

This action follows strike action taken by the same workers on 10 April, which the TSSA said had a "real impact" with "many stations shut at short notice".

They say they are "extremely concerned" about TfL's 'Stations Changes' proposals.

"We have made it clear that our union will not accept the continued threats to our members' roles, locations, terms, and conditions to stand unchallenged," a TSSA spokesperson said.

"We will continue to take sustained action until London Underground is prepared to negotiate with us in good faith."

Commenting on the impending strikes, a TfL spokesperson said: "We are disappointed that TSSA is continuing with this strike action following a consultation process.

"While we don't expect this action will cause significant disruption, we urge TSSA to continue to work with us to help find a resolution.

"There are no planned job losses as part of these vital changes which will improve the service we provide to customers at our stations."

Why are the strikes still happening?

Aslef rejected a two-year offer of 4% in 2022 and another 4% this year, saying it is way below inflation, and is linked to changes in terms and conditions.

Aslef said train drivers have not had an increase in salary for five years, since their last pay deals expired in 2019.

The union said after its members voted overwhelmingly in February to continue taking industrial action, it asked the train operating companies to hold talks.

General secretary Mick Whelan said the year-old pay offer of 4% and another 4% was "dead in the water".

Could Trump Go to Prison? If He Does, the Secret Service Goes, Too

Officials have had preliminary discussions about how to protect the former president in the unlikely event that he is jailed for contempt during the trial.

The U.S. Secret Service is in the business of protecting the president, whether he’s inside the Oval Office or visiting a foreign war zone.

But protecting a former president in prison? The prospect is unprecedented. That would be the challenge if Donald J. Trump — whom the agency is required by law to protect around the clock — is convicted at his criminal trial in Manhattan and sentenced to serve time.

Even before the trial’s opening statements, the Secret Service was in some measure planning for the extraordinary possibility of a former president behind bars. Prosecutors had asked the judge in the case to remind Mr. Trump that attacks on witnesses and jurors could land him in jail even before a verdict is rendered.

(The judge, who held a hearing Tuesday morning to determine whether Mr. Trump should be held in contempt for violating a gag order, is far more likely to issue a warning or impose a fine before taking the extreme step of jailing the 77-year-old former president. It was not immediately clear when he would issue his ruling.)

Last week, as a result of the prosecution’s request, officials with federal, state and city agencies had an impromptu meeting about how to handle the situation, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

That behind-the-scenes conversation — involving officials from the Secret Service and other relevant law enforcement agencies — focused only on how to move and protect Mr. Trump if the judge were to order him briefly jailed for contempt in a courthouse holding cell, the people said.

The far more substantial challenge — how to safely incarcerate a former president if the jury convicts him and the judge sentences him to prison rather than home confinement or probation — has yet to be addressed directly, according to some of a dozen current and former city, state and federal officials interviewed for this article.

That’s at least in part because if Mr. Trump is ultimately convicted, a drawn-out and hard-fought series of appeals, possibly all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, is almost a certainty. That would most likely delay any sentence for months if not longer, said several of the people, who noted that a prison sentence was unlikely.

But the daunting challenge remains. And not just for Secret Service and prison officials, who would face the logistical nightmare of safely incarcerating Mr. Trump, who is also the presumptive Republican nominee for President.

“Obviously, it’s uncharted territory,” said Martin F. Horn, who has worked at the highest levels of New York’s and Pennsylvania’s state prison agencies and served as commissioner of New York City’s correction and probation departments. “Certainly no state prison system has had to deal with this before, and no federal prison has had to either.”

Steven Cheung, the communications director for Mr. Trump’s campaign, said the case against the former president was “so spurious and so weak” that other prosecutors had refused to bring it, and called it “an unprecedented partisan witch hunt.”

“That the Democrat fever dream of incarcerating the nominee of the Republican Party has reached this level exposes their Stalinist roots and displays their utter contempt for American democracy,” he said.

Protecting Mr. Trump in a prison environment would involve keeping him separate from other inmates, as well as screening his food and other personal items, officials said. If he were to be imprisoned, a detail of agents would work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, rotating in and out of the facility, several officials said. While firearms are obviously strictly prohibited in prisons, the agents would nonetheless be armed.

Former corrections officials said there were several New York state prisons and city jails that have been closed or partly closed, leaving wings or large sections of their facilities empty and available. One of those buildings could serve to incarcerate the former president and accommodate his Secret Service protective detail

Anthony Guglielmi, the spokesman for the Secret Service in Washington, declined in a statement to discuss specific “protective operations.” But he said that federal law requires Secret Service agents to protect former presidents, adding that they use state-of-the-art technology, intelligence and tactics to do so.

Thomas J. Mailey, a spokesman for New York State’s prison agency, said his department couldn’t speculate about how it would treat someone who has not yet been sentenced, but that it has a system “to assess and provide for individuals’ medical, mental health and security needs.” Frank Dwyer, a spokesman for the New York City jails agency, said only that “the department would find appropriate housing” for the former president.

The trial in Manhattan, one of four criminal cases pending against Mr. Trump and possibly the only one that will go to a jury before the election, centers on accusations he falsified records to cover up a sex scandal involving a porn star. The former president is charged with 34 counts of felony falsifying business records. If convicted, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, could sentence him to punishments ranging from probation to four years in state prison, though for a first-time offender of Mr. Trump’s age, such a term would be extreme.

If Mr. Trump is convicted, but elected president again, he could not pardon himself because the prosecution was brought by New York State.

Under normal circumstances, any sentence of one year or less, colloquially known as “city time,” would generally be served on New York City’s notorious Rikers Island, home to the Department of Correction’s seven jails. (That’s where Mr. Trump’s former chief financial officer, Allen H. Weisselberg, 76, is currently serving his second five-month sentence for crimes related to his work for his former boss.)

Any sentence of more than a year, known as state time, would generally be served in one of the 44 prisons run by New York State’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.

The former president could also be sentenced to a term of probation, raising the bizarre possibility of the former commander in chief reporting regularly to a civil servant at the city’s Probation Department.

He would have to follow the probation officer’s instructions and answer questions about his work and personal life until the term of probation ended. He would also be barred from associating with disreputable people, and if he committed any additional crimes, he could be jailed immediately.
