What To Bring On Naxos Boat Tours?

If you’ve never been on a boat day trip here’s what you’ll want to pack:

• Bag (ideally waterproof, if not, at least a waterproof pouch for electronics)
• Water bottle
• Hoodie or a cardigan

A waterproof bag is not necessary for every boat trip. If you’re taking a larger boat, your stuff will probably stay dry as there is a dedicated dry space to put it. 

A swimsuit (and something dry to change into!) is a must if you’ll be swimming on the trip. 

You can take a regular beach towel, but if you’re backpacking around Cyclades you probably have a quick dry microfibre towel. It works great, and I love mine!

Sunscreen is a must ! The sun is strong in Naxos, and you’ll want to have a bottle of sunscreen to reapply throughout the day if you’ll be swimming and hanging out on the boat.

Most Naxos boat tours are all-inclusive, meaning you’ll get freshly prepared lunch, snacks, and drinks. But after years of traveling as a vegan, I always pack some snacks in case vegan options are not available.

Kato Koufonissi is exactly the opposite – the islet has been uninhabited since the 1960s, but you can still find remnants of a deserted village, plenty of migratory birds, and stunning golden beaches like Nero (the most popular of the beaches here), the tiny Detis with its golden sands, and the very picturesque Panagia and big trees offering shade.

A great way to discover these two islands is with a full-day cruise. This 10-hour-long adventure starts as you get on a traditional wooden boat and head toward Kato Koufonissi.

Here, you’ll have time for swimming, snorkeling, and exploring before you get back on the boat for a rich Greek BBQ of souvlaki, local potato salad, and tzatziki with unlimited water, soft drinks, and house wine.

Your next stop is Ano Koufonissi, where you’ll get three free hours to visit the beach or explore the village and maybe pick up some souvenirs or take photos as you walk the beautiful shoreline. For the ultimate in privacy, you can’t beat renting your own boat when in Nexos. Boats are available in all sizes and prices here, and you can find one that fits your budget and needs.

Smaller motorboats with an engine smaller than 30 hp can be rented without a license. This means bigger, more powerful boats like speedboats are out of the question, but smaller boats like cruisers or charter boats might be easy to rent.

When renting, you’ll be offered comprehensive training in safety standards and how to navigate the boat if you have no previous experience with it.

This is a great option if you just want to explore nearby islands and want the freedom of making your own schedule and exploring at your own pace.

Donoussa is a tiny island located in the centre of the Cyclades island, to the east of Naxos. Although Donoussa was inhabited in the ancient times, it was gradually abandoned due to raids of pirates in the Middle Ages. When piracy in the Aegean Sea was confronted, residents from neighbouring Amorgos island settled on Donoussa. Now it is one of the remotest islands in Greece, where you can enjoy real traditional life and secluded beaches.

Schinoussa is a tiny island located to the south of Naxos and very close to Ios and Amorgos. Schinoussa has only a few inhabitants and paces of life there are slow and traditional. Naxos to Mykonos Day Trip

If Mykonos isn't already on your Greek travel itinerary, then this day trip from Naxos to Mykonos is a great idea. The entire day is around 10 hours long, and gives you 6 free hours when in Mykonos.

There's plenty to see and do around Mykonos Town, including the Little Venice area, climbing up to the windmills and walking around the whitewashed alleyways.

Note: You can also just about put your own day trip to Mykonos together by taking a ferry from Naxos to Mykonos .

Naxos to Delos and Mykonos Full-Day Boat Trip

This is a nice variation on the sailing trip from Naxos to Mykonos described above, as it includes a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Delos along the way.

This Naxos to Delos day trip does of course reduce the amount of time spent in Mykonos to 3 hours though – but it's a nice balance especially if you want to see the ancient ruins at Delos and tick a UNESCO site off your list!

Naxos to Santorini Day Trip

If Santorini is not on your travel itinerary, you can still visit on a day trip from Naxos. The total length of the tour is around 12 hours, and it also includes a bus tour of the island.

Naxos to Paros Island Day Trip

Paros is the island right next door to Naxos, and you could say that the two islands are rivals in some way! If you don't plan on spending more than a night in Paros, there are a few options available to you to take a Naxos to Paros day trip.

Check the local travel agencies in Naxos Town and by the port to see if they are running any trips out to Paros. Alternatively, you can always take the first ferry out from Naxos to Paros and then the last ferry back from Paros to Naxos to put your own trip together.

If you decide to do it yourself, you may need to limit your time to sightseeing in Parikia , which is the island's main capital. Remember to stop by the Panagia Ekatontapiliani church, sometimes known as the Church with a Hundred Doors!
