Embark on a journey to South Padre Island, where the sun-drenched shores of the Gulf of Mexico blend a vibrant culture and natural wonders.

This island gem, nestled off the southern tip of Texas, boasts a rich history intertwined with tales of exploration and resilience.

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes, its story evolved with Spanish explorers and later became a haven for pirates.

Today, South Padre Island welcomes anywhere from five to seven million people a year.

Adjacent to the mainland, you’ll find communities like Port Isabel, with its charming streets and historic lighthouse, offering a glimpse into the area’s past.

What sets South Padre Island apart is its versatility; it’s a playground for spring breakers seeking excitement and relaxation alike, as well as a tranquil retreat for retirees in search of a laid-back lifestyle.

The island’s unique blend of pristine beaches, diverse wildlife, and lively atmosphere creates an irresistible allure that is hard to resist.

  • Warnings & Dangers in South Padre Island

OVERALL RISK: LOW

The overall risk here largely depends on your attention to personal safety. The potential for a medium risk is there, but the low risk in reality is due to increased security over the years and low tolerance for illegal behavior. Plus, there's so much to do in safe, fun places you won't get bored.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

You can view the Getting Around the Island section of the tourism website to see the list of options. Choose from the free shuttle system that runs the length of the island and onto the mainland. Taxis, rideshares, and private charters are available. Rental cars can be found in several surrounding cities. Golf carts are another popular choice for getting around. All options come with a low risk, but that's assuming you are using basic safety practices.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: LOW

I'm surprised to see that just one purse snatching has been reported in the past five years in South Padre. However, the "other" category of theft could include beach bags stolen. Statistically the risk is low, but treat it as a medium risk due to the number of people around you. I only use small crossbody bags at the beach, with just enough room for an ID, credit card, and my phone.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

Treat this as a medium risk to stay aware of incoming severe or tropical weather. Hurricane Season runs from June through November. Rip tides, flooding, high waves, and bacteria-filled water can cause safety threats. We'll help you find alerts and places to check safety conditions in this article.

MUGGING RISK: LOW

About 30% of robberies are muggings, with eight or fewer robberies in a given year going back a decade. The risk is low, with 2022 having just five robberies and none of those was a mugging. You do need to use extra caution at night and stick with people you know in well-lit, secure areas.

TERRORISM RISK: MEDIUM

This is a medium risk due to criminal and safety concerns around the border. As much as you can risk being a target of international crime, you could also stumble upon a drug deal or cartel activity. You have to use street smarts here and don't downplay the risk of Mexican cartel problems. These people are ruthless. Always report anything suspicious and never try to intervene.

SCAMS RISK: LOW

Check local law enforcement social media sites for the latest scams. The local Better Business Bureau office and the state Attorney General’s office will have common scam tactics and protection advice. Before you even think about booking a rental home, check out the short-term rental laws so that you can quickly spot anyone not being compliant. The risk is increased in a major tourist area like this.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: MEDIUM

Women should treat this as a medium risk due to the risks involved with alcohol, large crowds, lowering of inhibitions, and inherent risks of a border town. Always stick with friends and never leave anyone behind. Don't drink beyond your ability to make smart choices.

TAP WATER RISK: LOW

The U.S. has strict standards for tap water per the Safe Water Drinking Act. Communities are required to provide a Water Quality Report (Consumer Confidence Report) once a year by July 1. The risk is low, but you should also know that South Padre is prone to water outages or water restrictions. Review the Laguna Madre Water District website before your visit.

I really like how the page is broken down into different itineraries, showcasing that it’s much more than a spring break destination.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center offers a fascinating insight into the local wildlife and ecosystem.

You’ll meander through wetlands boardwalks with platforms overlooking the Laguna Madre.

It’s a birding paradise.

South Padre Island Historical Museum is housed in the Old City Hall building.

The exhibits here trace the history of South Padre Island and the surrounding region, covering topics such as early settlers, maritime heritage, and local culture.

Located in the heart of the town, Port Isabel Historical Museum occupies a building dating back to 1899.

Inside, you can explore exhibits that delve into Port Isabel’s past, including its role as a bustling port town and its significance in the Texas Revolution.

Just across the street is the Port Isabel Lighthouse with the Treasures of the Gulf Museum inside.

Self-guided tours of the lighthouse are open daily, but can be limited or canceled due to extreme weather or a launch.

You might be asking – “A launch of what?”

I’m glad you asked!

The SpaceX Boca Chica location is testing rockets that will help pave the way to Mars.

You can’t tour the facility, but you can check the launch location and then find a spot to watch it happen.

When there isn’t a launch scheduled, head to Boca Chica State Park to drive by SpaceX and then enjoy the beach.

Tours are available throughout the island, from swimming with dolphins, horseback rides on the beach, parasailing, or kayak sunset tours.

There’s just an overwhelming number of options, including high adrenaline activites like skydiving or flyboarding.

Any risky activity will require you to waive liability of the vendor.

Keep this in mind when booking travel insurance and consider adventure insurance add-ons.

Beach Waterpark is a massive amusement site with carnival rides, various water activities, and several areas just for kids.

Adults will love the swim-up bars and lazy river.

They even have tubing on uphill water coasters!

Among the dozens of restaurants, bars, and nightlife options, the Longboard Bar and Grill stands out as the Live Music Capital of South Texas.

It has a great layout so that you don’t feel cramped with all the other guests and there are some thrill rides on site.

We’ve only scratched the surface of South Padre Island, but hopefully you have got a taste of what’s to come!

  • Places to Avoid in South Padre Island

The same risks are everywhere on the island, and it’s not that big of an area.

Only 2,600 people live here, and the rest is filled with hotels and resorts.

I would suggest you avoid booking a place simply because it has the lowest price.

Here’s why:

  • You’ll do a lot of walking and want to be close to the places that you’ll visit the most.
  • Some hotel groups are more for the young, hip party crowds. Others are more for retirees. Yet another section might cater to families. Choose within your niche to find a good deal.
  • If you plan to use the island shuttle, pick a place to stay that is on the route. This is especially important at the end of a long day when you’re exhausted.

You don’t need to avoid South Padre Island during hurricane season, but definitely keep an eye on tropical development.

The peak of the season comes from August through October.

You will have plenty of notice that a storm is approaching.

One additional thing to note – Padre Island National Seashore is three hours away by car from South Padre Island.

You’ll have to go to the mainland to reach the national seashore.

If you want to be closer to that location, consider staying in Port Aransas.

  • Safety Tips for Traveling to South Padre Island
  • South Padre Island is an island and a city with its own police department. Follow them on Facebook @SouthPadreIslandPolice. Call (956) 761-5454 to ask specific safety questions. That’s also a good number to save in your contact list, so it’s easily accessible if you see suspicious activity.
  • You should also follow the Padre Beach Rescue Association to learn about beach warning flag systems and other safety guidance from the people who dedicate their lives to rescuing those in need.
  • Use the Smart911 program to sign up for emergency alerts in South Padre Island. This will cover public safety threats and weather emergencies. This is not the same as the texts you can get from the tourism association – those will cover events, festivals, and concerts.
  • Check the emergency management section of the city’s website to find evacuation routes and shelter information should you be there during a hurricane or tropical storm. My advice? Get out as soon as it appears a storm is heading that way. Most people wait too long and end up in traffic or without a place to shelter safely. Make San Antonio your back-up city.
  • Sign up for the Island Vibes newsletter from the city to get the latest information about projects and activities closer to your visit. Pay special attention to construction projects and road closures.
  • The city has a Shoreline department that offers some important documents for you to review. You need the Beach Access Guide, Beach Access Parking Guide, and Bay Street Endings Guide.
  • While the beach water quality in South Texas ranks as some of the cleanest in the country, you can’t take that at face value. Check the Texas Beach Watch website for testing of all beaches and choose one that doesn’t have an advisory.
  • Use the Sharktivity app to track the location of sharks in the water. In March 2024, a shark was spotted within 200 yards of the South Padre Island beach. Sharks are most active at dawn and dusk.
  • Anglers need a fishing license from the state of Texas. Review the rules and prices on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website. You must have that license with you at all times while fishing, even on a charter tour.
  • You can drink alcohol on the beaches of South Padre Island, but you must be 21. That doesn’t mean you can drink to excess and cause disruption to people around you – public drunkenness is a crime. Smoking is banned in any public area of the island.
  • So... How Safe Is South Padre Island Really?

Normally, in this section, I’ll give you a deep dive into crime statistics from the most recent year, but South Padre Island needs a different explanation.

That’s because crime rates are determined by the population, and the raw crime data is turned into “per 100,000 people” to get the numbers.

However, since five million or more people visit each year, the crime statistics won’t hold up.

In this case, it would mean South Padre Island has a violent crime rate three times the national average.

That’s why some sites might say this is a high-crime area.

What it really boils down to is about three violent crimes a month on average.

About 43% of violent crimes happen against strangers, and only 15% happen in private homes.

That means crimes are happening more in the public eye here or at hotels than in the average city.

That makes sense with the high tourism numbers.

However, a stranger doesn’t mean a tourist.

It could be drug deals or other criminal activity where someone is a victim.

In the past decade, theft rates have dropped 54% and that has been a steady drop – meaning it’s not a fluke.

On average, five thefts happen each week, but you can assume here that the majority will happen during busy tourist times like spring break and summer vacations.

A whopping 98% of thefts are connected to the “Other” category, which can mean things stolen from the beach, yards, or campsites.

The average car break-in or accessory theft happens about one day a year, but again, we assume most of those happen during busy tourist times.

While car thefts average one a month, with Mexico being so close by, there’s little chance a stolen car will be recovered.

Always lock your car and bring your keys with you.

Don’t leave personal items inside. Avoid renting a Kia or Hyundai.

I recommend anyone visiting South Padre to look up Spring Break safety tips online and use that guidance year-round.

I spent two spring breaks in this area.

While it was many years ago, it was still a little unnerving, and my group imposed strict safety steps for everyone out of the utmost caution.

I can honestly tell you that I had an amazing time, but it’s also not a place for the naive or easily influenced.

If you’re looking for a party, you can find it here.

You can also find a lot of trouble if you aren’t careful.

  • How Does South Padre Island Compare?
  • Useful Information

All international visitors need either a visa defining the purpose of the trip (tourist, work, school, etc.) or a visa waiver. Start the process using the Visa Wizard module on the U.S. State Department website. You’ll quickly find out which one you need. Also, keep in mind that your passport must be valid for at least six months after our trip, or you’ll need to apply for a new one.

Only the U.S. Dollar (USD) is accepted in the United States. International airports usually have a currency exchange desk on site, while regional airports won’t. If you also plan to visit Mexico, you'll need pesos. Some businesses on both sides of the border might accept both currencies, but you have to ask in advance.

The good news? Winter brings the mid-70s for daytime highs. However, that means the summers will be in the 90s with a "feels like" temperature that could reach triple digits. You'll need sunscreen, bug spray, and all the beach clothes you can fit into your suitcase. Bring water shoes to protect your feet from sharp items on the ocean floor.

Brownsville South Padre International Airport is 30 minutes from the island. It offers flights to Dallas or Houston. While normally I would suggest just driving to the large airport, Texas is huge, and it takes a long time to drive to any major city from this part of the state. For example, Houston is six hours away by car. Dallas is almost nine hours away.

Travel insurance goes into effect as soon as you purchase it. Comprehensive insurance offers the best protection and peace of mind.

South Pa dre Island Warnings and Dangers

South Padre Island is a popular spot, especially during spring break! Read on to find out what warnings and dangers you should be aware of before you go.

[viator_tour destination=”22446″]

Of course, you’ll want to walk barefoot along the beach, but be careful, jellyfish and Portugese man-of-war have been spotted along the beach. Even after these animals die, their tentacle can pack a powerful sting, so don’t touch or step on these creatures! Also beware of broken beer bottles and other litter. There are steep fines for leaving such items on the beach, but it still happens.

Surf conditions are closely monitored at South Padre, and signs with flags are posted all along the beach to warn visitors about the conditions of the water. Make sure to pay attention to these signs as at times the water can be dangerous to swim in. A red flag means that high surf and dangerous currents are present, yellow indicates calm to moderate seas, blue flags mean that venomous marine life is in the area. Always use caution, regardless of the flag system and take note that there aren’t lifeguards on the beach, so if you get into trouble, there are no professionals around to help.

There are some places on South Padre where you are allowed to drive on the beach, but make sure that you aren’t attempting to drive across any of the dunes. It is illegal and the chances of getting stuck aren’t worth the risk. Take caution driving on the sand even in the areas where it is allowed, loose sand means that you could easily get stuck. For a $3 fee you can enter at beach access #5, Atwood Park. The ramp here is usually well maintained which means less of a chance of getting stuck.

Law Enforcement

Due to its popularity and reputation for being a party spot, there are lots of police at South Padre Island. Take posted speed limit signs very seriously during your visit, if you exceed the limit, you will get a ticket. You will also get ticketed if you aren’t wearing a seatbelt, so make sure you buckle up! The police are always out in full force and they don’t mess around, glass containers are forbidden on the beach and getting caught with one will get you a hefty fine. Drinking and driving is a major no-no unless you want to go to jail and even getting too intoxicated while walking can be risky. Officers will not hesitate to arrest you for public intoxication.

Because of the islands fairly close proximity to Mexico you may also encounter customs border agents or roadblocks, so don’t be surprised if you are stopped or even asked to let a drug dog inspect your vehicle.

Let’s embark on a journey to unravel the intricacies of this coastal paradise, ensuring a memorable and secure sojourn.

Crime Statistics and Safety Measures

South Padre Island has consistently maintained a low crime rate, ensuring a safe environment for residents and visitors alike. According to the latest FBI Uniform Crime Reporting statistics, the overall crime rate in South Padre Island is significantly lower than both the state and national averages.

The local law enforcement agency, the South Padre Island Police Department, is highly effective in maintaining public safety. The department employs a proactive approach to policing, emphasizing community engagement and crime prevention initiatives. Officers regularly patrol the island, ensuring a visible presence and responding swiftly to any incidents.

  • Beach Patrol: During peak season, the South Padre Island Beach Patrol provides additional security and assistance to beachgoers, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Recent Crime Incidents and Trends

South Padre Island has experienced occasional isolated incidents of crime, but these are typically minor offenses. The island remains a safe destination, and visitors can feel confident in their personal safety.

Nestled amidst verdant greenery and the gentle murmur of a nearby lake, Lake in the Pines Apartments offers an oasis of tranquility. Step into a world of comfort and style, where spacious living areas, cozy fireplaces, and private balconies invite you to unwind.

Natural Hazards and Disaster Preparedness

South Padre Island, a captivating coastal paradise, is not immune to the capriciousness of nature. Hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes pose potential threats to this idyllic haven. However, the island’s resilience lies in its proactive approach to disaster preparedness and emergency response.

Hurricanes, formidable storms born over warm ocean waters, are a recurring threat to South Padre Island. The island’s location in the Gulf of Mexico makes it vulnerable to these colossal systems. Past hurricanes, such as Hurricane Bret in 1999 and Hurricane Dolly in 2008, have left their mark on the island, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and property.

Venture to the enchanting shores of Mersea Island , where nature’s symphony unfolds. Nestled amidst tranquil forests and rolling hills, campsites beckon you to embrace the serenity of the outdoors. Awaken to the chorus of birdsong, explore hidden trails, and witness the celestial tapestry painted across the night sky.

Let the gentle breeze carry your worries away as you reconnect with the wonders of the natural world.

To mitigate the impact of hurricanes, South Padre Island has implemented a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan. The plan Artikels evacuation routes, designates emergency shelters, and establishes protocols for communication and resource allocation. Regular hurricane drills and public education campaigns ensure that residents are well-informed and prepared to respond effectively.

Flooding, often a consequence of heavy rainfall or storm surges, poses another potential hazard to South Padre Island. The island’s low-lying topography makes it susceptible to inundation during extreme weather events. To address this risk, the island has invested in flood control infrastructure, including drainage systems and elevated roads.

In addition to structural measures, South Padre Island promotes flood awareness and preparedness among its residents. Flood insurance programs, sandbag distribution, and community outreach initiatives empower individuals to protect their property and mitigate the impact of flooding.

Earthquakes

Earthquakes, while less frequent than hurricanes or floods, are not entirely absent from South Padre Island’s risk profile. The island is located near the Balcones Fault Zone, a geological feature that has the potential to generate seismic activity. While major earthquakes are rare, minor tremors can occur, causing ground shaking and potential damage to buildings.

As the sun dips below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the sparkling waters, a haven awaits at The Club at Treasure Island . Its elegant suites offer breathtaking views of the Gulf of Mexico, inviting you to unwind in unparalleled luxury.

Indulge in gourmet dining, bask in the warm embrace of the sun by the infinity pool, or surrender to the rejuvenating touch of the spa.

To enhance earthquake preparedness, South Padre Island has adopted building codes that incorporate seismic design standards. These codes ensure that new construction and renovations meet specific criteria to withstand earthquake forces. Additionally, the island collaborates with regional and state agencies to monitor seismic activity and develop emergency response plans.

South Padre Island’s commitment to disaster preparedness is a testament to its dedication to safeguarding its residents and preserving its natural beauty. Through a combination of proactive planning, infrastructure investments, and community engagement, the island has positioned itself to withstand the challenges posed by nature’s forces and emerge stronger.

Water in South Padre Island is usually more transparent on the bay than on the gulf side. But given the right conditions, the water in the gulf side would love you breathless.

Quality of water is a thing of priority in South Padre Island. The Texas Government Land Office even tests the water quality frequently, a program enacted by Congress in 2000 called the BEACH Act.

The Beach Act seeks to protect public health by constantly testing coastal waters to ensure they are free from pathogens and contaminants and notifying the public of any concerns.

The Texas Government Land Office uses a flag system to communicate the water quality to the locals. The flags are usually visible on every beach entrance and are usually updated once or more per day.

The flag system helps notify the general public of the level of water current and wildlife presence.

Here’s a list of the flag colors used and what they imply:

Yellow: Indicates Normal Condition

Blue/Purple: Used to signify the presence of jellyfish and other stinging marine life.

Red: Signifies Heavy Surf and Dangerous currents.

Is South Padre Island Safe for Swimming?

If you’re a lover of swimming, then you must have asked the question ”Is South Padre Island Safe for swimming?”

Well, it’s a known fact that swimming at a beach isn’t ideal and is usually an ”at your risk” activity. But regardless, swimming on South Padre Island is as safe as any other beach.

It’s best to say swimming at South Padre Beach is safer than other beaches because of the availability of Beach patrol in the area.

South Padre Island doesn’t have any lifeguards on standby, but the Beach Patrol in the area is fully trained and equipped to help in cases of emergency.

Whether it’s a cut foot, jellyfish sting, or other medical emergencies, the Beach Patrol is readily available to tackle the situation.

Does South Padre Island Have Sharks and Alligators?

Well, the answer to whether South Padre Island has sharks and alligators is a yes and a no. There are sharks in South Padre Island, but there are no alligators.

South Padre Island lies amid oceans; hence it does have sharks. But shark attacks aren’t a thing to worry about because such occurrence is infrequent, with a meager 1 in 20 million chance of shark attack while on the Island.

On the other hand, there are no alligators on South Padre Island, only jellyfish, and Portuguese man-o-war. But with the flag system in South Padre Island, you’ve nothing to worry about, as swimmers usually get prior notice if there’s an increased risk for them.

Another precaution to prevent stings from these stinging water bodies is to shuffle your feet instead of picking them up. Shuffling your feet helps give these creatures prior warning of your approach and offers them ample time to get out of your way.

Is South Padre Island Safe for Families?

Absolutely yes!! South Padre Island is the number one tourist location to spend quality time with family. Aside from being the go-to Spring Break party destination, South features fantastic beaches with cozy waters and many activities to keep you glued to the spot.

Families-Friendly activities in South Padre Island include Kiteboarding, birdwatching, Sand Castle building, dolphin spotting, and many other intriguing activities.

Safety Tips in South Padre Island

While South Padre Island has no specific regions tagged as safe locations, since everywhere is generally considered safe, it won’t hurt to apply a little caution to ensure your safety.

Locals and tourists usually consider the northwest part of South Padre Island as the safest part; however, here are a few tips to help you stay safe in South Padre Island, especially when lodging in a hotel.

Always try not to flaunt yourself as someone with plenty of money or assets. Then, if no one thinks your room has things worth stealing, no one will bother you.

Always Give the Impression That Someone is Home

Theft usually occurs when the person seeking to break into your room perceives that there’s no one at home. So always make sure you give the impression that someone is home anytime you want to leave your room.

You can turn your TV on or hang the Do Not Disturb sign on your door before leaving.

Visiting South Padre Island is usually worthwhile as this touristy venue has many amazing things to do.

If you’ve ever wanted to visit South Padre Island but had doubts about whether it’s safe, I believe you’ve finally gotten clarity on the safety situation in South Padre Island. So check your schedule, plan that trip, and you’ll be glad you did.

True, there have been a few rare crimes on the island in recent years, including robbery and assault with deadly weapons. While cases like these make headlines, they’re thankfully still rare occurrences. Many of these instances occur during the rowdy Spring Break season. Overalll, the crime rate, especially violent crime is very low on South Padre Island.

Although the college crowd tends to hang out in specific areas, families can enjoy South Padre Island year-round as there are many other places on the island to enjoy.

The most common crime tourists face on South Padre Island is petty theft, but nothing more than what you might experience in your neighborhood (hopefully!)

One of the most important safety tips for families on South Padre Island is to keep your valuables out of sight; this includes purses, wallets, and phones.

The beaches are beautiful and the water blue. Ingredients for a great day or sand, surf, and sun. Be aware of South Padre Island’s climate. The sun can get pretty intense during the summer months, so make sure to use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher before heading outside!

Stay hydrated

Summer in Texas is hot. Beach hydration is very important. Make sure you are taking in plenty of non-alcoholic fluids. If you are enjoying alcohol on the beach, alternate those drinks with water or sports drinks. And of course, be safe and responsible when drinking alcohol.

Is South Padre Island Beach safe to swim?

There are a few safety precautions when it comes to water safety on South Padre Island. The area around the island is home to many different aquatic plants and animals, so you must take caution before entering the water. Stick to shallow areas and don’t go in if you see any warning signs posted!

Watch for rip currents where a strong, fast-moving current of water is heading away from shore (you can notice these by observing darker patches of water, fewer breaking waves, ripples surrounding smooth waters, and an outward flow of water against the incoming tide)

In fact, one of the safest things on South Padre Island IS its beaches. They’re monitored by lifeguards and the water is wonderfully warm! We mentioned rip currents earlier, but also be aware of the high waves in the Gulf of Mexico during hurricane season.

While these conditions may not deter some, it’s good to be aware so that you can make an informed decision about your family’s safety when you visit SPI.

No. South Padre Island has been voted one of Texas’ Cleanest Beaches by the Texas General Land Office. Its distance from the mouth of the Mississippi River and positioning along the Texas gulf coast provide some of the clearest beach water in Texas.

21 Things to do on South Padre Island, Texas

Written By: The Planet D

United States

Updated On: June 11, 2024

South Padre Island is a beautiful resort town off coastal South Texas . My parents actually spent a decade as Snowbirds making their way to South Padre to escape the winters from Canada. The town sits on a massive barrier island and is joined to the mainland by Queen Isabella Causeway.

With theme parks and watersports for adventure and amazing natural habitats including nesting grounds for sea turtles and plenty of wildlife, South Padre Island is the perfect balance between spending time in nature and having a fun beach holiday. There are so many South Padre Island attractions – both natural and manmade.

Top Things to do on South Padre Island

Best things to do on south Padre Island TX Map

This guide will cover all the best things to do on South Padre Island. You’ll have plenty of itinerary inspiration, from exploring Laguna Madre to spending a day at Gravity Park.

1. Enjoy a Beach Day at Isla Blanca Beach

things to do on south padre island Texas isla blanca

What would a beach holiday be without a beach day? Make sure to pencil in at least one day to enjoy a real beach day at Isla Blanca Beach. This is definitely one of the busiest spots and is a place you don’t want to miss when you are looking for things to do on South Padre Island. Here, you can stick to the classics like finding sea shells or sunbathing or, if you are looking for something more active, rent equipment from one of the many surf shops and go surfing or boogie boarding. If you are a real adrenaline junkie, you can even go parasailing or jet skiing.

You can book this parasailing excursion in advance. No experience is needed to take in the sweeping views of the island. You can also book a jet ski rental to explore Laguna Madre independently. Make sure to keep an eye out for dolphins.

Isla Blanca Beach is stunning, with vast white sands and plenty of room to accommodate all the visitors that it inevitably attracts. You are flanked by the marina and backed by a beautiful boardwalk with waterfront pavilions scattered along the way. The beach is just a short walk from the town center and all its amenities.

2. South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center

things to do on south padre island tx dolphin eco tour

Dolphins deserve to live a life free from captivity. And this is precisely the message that the Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center pioneers. The center is just a short drive from South Padre Island – located in Port Isabel on the other side of the Queen Isabella Causeway.

The center runs daily ethical dolphin cruises, taking visitors out to spot wild bottlenose dolphins on a special dolphin tour. These dolphin tours are unlike your standard commercial tourist traps and carry just six or fewer tourists at a time. You’ll experience an ethical dolphin cruise; quiet, respectful, and knowledgeable about the marine animals it aims to spot.

Tours aren’t the only thing the Dolphin Research & Sea Life Nature Center does. The center also has a touch tank and marine exhibits to educate visitors on marine conservation. All the resident animals are rescues that are being rehabilitated or deemed unsuitable to be released back into the wild. You can learn more about ongoing coastal concerns and how you can do your bit to help out.

Book this 90 minute dolphin watch excursion for a cruise into the Gulf of Mexico to spot Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. You’ll also see seabirds, The US Coast Guard Station, and the Space X location.

3. South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

things to do on south padre island tx bird and nature center

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is another non-profit gem on South Padre Island. The center has over 3,300 feet of boardwalks that wind around the bay, an alligator sanctuary, an observation tower, five bird blinds, and a butterfly garden. You’ll spot birds, gators, butterflies, and more. And you can opt for a guided tour or explore alone – with no noise except from the animals around you.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is perfect if you want to spend half a day surrounded by nature. If you liked the sound of the Laguna Madre Nature Trail, it offers a similar experience, just longer and with more varied attractions along the way.

If you want to see Laguna Madre from the water, a good option is a jet ski rental. You can ride alone or with another person to see the coastline from a different point of view. You can check availability and prices here.

things to do on south padre island tx butterfly garden

An important part of the center is the Butterfly Garden, which is a great place to spot butterflies in the wild. The park is small but full of pollinator-friendly plants – perfect for encouraging butterflies and other beautiful wildlife. The Monarch Butterfly was placed on the Endangered Species List, and the center is working to restore Monarch Butterfly Habitat.

4. South Padre Island Adventure Park

what to do on south padre island tx adventure park

South Padre Island Adventure Park is a dreamy attraction for a day of activities. The park sits on forty acres of land, including a vast, privately owned beach. You can pick whatever activity piques your interest, from horseback riding on the beach to ziplining around a zipline circuit. We recommend horseback riding, as if you get lucky, you might spot bottlenose dolphins or other marine life while cantering along the water’s edge.

South Padre Island Adventure Park also has a petting barn. In this safe, knowledgeable environment, families can introduce young children to animals. The park is a brilliant day out for families and lone adults alike.

5. Take a Sand Castle lesson

what to do on south padre island tx sandcastle lesson

One of the most unique things to do on South Padre Island is to take a sand castle lesson. Chances are, building sand castles was a skill you either taught yourself or your parents showed you with a bucket and spade. However, at South Padre Island, you can take your first official lesson as professional sand sculptors run sand castle lessons along the beach. You won’t be flipping buckets upside down the whole time to make standard castles. You’ll be creating artwork.

The lessons run between one and three hours, and the result is guaranteed to be a masterpiece. You’ll build a stunning castle – often so big that you’ll have to stand on your tiptoes to finish the final roofing details. The details are impressive, with stairways that would impress Disney and realistic textures carved into the walls and roof. Depending on your requirements, you can book group, family, and private lessons.

This Sandcastling Experience will teach you to build a sandcastle like a pro. It includes all the tools to create beautiful sandcastles that can be used throughout your stay. Read more here.

6. See The Largest Outdoor Sandcastle in the US

what to do on south padre island tx largest sandcastle in us

You might make your own sandcastle or even take a sandcastle-building lesson, but you also need to visit the Largest Outdoor Sandcastle in the US. Built in 2013, it took 150 tons of river sand to build. Since then, it has attracted millions of tourists and stands as a testament to South Padre Island’s sandcastle culture. Update: Unfortunately, the City of South Padre Island removed this sandcastle in 2023. But keep your eyes open, as it just might be rebuilt.

There are also many smaller pieces of sand art nearby, so allow at least an hour to look around. If you visit during a holiday, you can usually find some themed artwork, which is always good fun. Even better, you just pay a donation to visit, keeping costs nice and low.

7. Laguna Madre Nature Trail

south padre island things to do laguna madre nature trail

Laguna Madre Nature Trail is South Padre Island’s most scenic and diverse walk. The boardwalk is just 1,500 feet long and spans four acres of the Laguna Madre Wetlands. However, you’ll be surrounded by nature – from fiddlewood berries to pelicans and falcons. It is one of the top bird-watching sites on the island and is a perfect nature walk on a sunny day.

Laguna Madre Nature trail is open 24 hours a day and free to enter. The natural wildlife reserve is a peaceful addition to any South Padre Island itinerary. Allow around an hour to enjoy the trail to its fullest.

8. Sea Turtle Inc.

south padre island things to do sea turtle inc

Who doesn’t love sea turtles? Sea Turtle Inc. is a haven for injured sea turtles and rehabilitates and releases rescued sea turtles 365 days a year. Visiting Sea Turtle Inc. is one of the most wholesome ways to spend a couple of hours – especially since the charity is entirely funded by visitors and donations.

You can take a self-guided tour around the different pools, stopping to look at each rescued sea turtle. If you haven’t seen a sea turtle before, this is a hugely memorable experience. It also helps you to comprehend the number of turtles in need, and you can view the different treatments and techniques used to heal the creatures – including metal braces and bandaging.

Make sure to stop by the gift shop after, as sales massively help the charity continue its fantastic work. You can also check the schedule to attend one of the hourly presentations or daily sea turtle feeding sessions. Read more: 10 Ways to Help Save the Oceans – World Oceans Day and Beyond

9. South Padre Sand Dunes

south padre tx things to do sand dunes

South Padre Sand Dunes are one of the best spots on the island. The dunes sit on the beachfront, located at the north end of Padre Boulevard. While the dunes are protected (meaning no driving or sand sports), you can walk through them. Just be mindful of disrupting the dunes as little as possible.

There is something special about being surrounded by sand dunes, and you should bring your camera to capture the moment. You’ll be surrounded by miles of sandy hills and ridges -a beautiful experience, to say the least.

10. Port Isabel Lighthouse

things to do south padre island texas port isabel lighthouse

Port Isabel Lighthouse is a stunning landmark and state historic site. It is the only remaining lighthouse in Texas still open to the public, so it is considered a valuable part of the state’s coastal history. It is a fantastic attraction to visit for a bit of maritime history.

Port Isabel Lighthouse has 75 stairs, which you can tackle to reach the top for glorious views. Walking up the spiral stairs is mildly vertigo-inducing but indeed an experience. Often, immersive history is easier to engage with, and the lighthouse offers a memorable history lesson.

Tickets can be purchased from the Keeper’s Cottage Visitor Center. Reaching Port Isabel Lighthouse from South Padre Island is also extremely easy, as you just cross the Queen Isabella Highway.

11. Gravity Park

Ready for a day at an amusement park? Gravity Park is a fun evening out. The amusement park is packed with rides and activities, including go-karts, mini-golf, and a reverse bungee. Having opened in 1993, it has years of experience under its belt. It is a popular attraction amongst tourists and locals alike.

Entrance to Gravity Park is free, and tickets for rides are bought on a ride-by-ride basis. This is perfect for adults taking children into the park, as admission tickets can quickly add up to otherwise make an expensive day out. Adults will love the park, too, and the giant swing and reverse bungee are exciting challenges for testing your nerves.

12. Drive the Queen Isabella Causeway

queen isabella causeway south padre tx

This may sound a strange addition to your itinerary but driving the Queen Isabella Causeway is somewhat of a momentous thing to do on South Padre Island. It is one of the longest bridges in Texas and has beautiful water views. You can drive over the bridge yourself or even book a taxi to relax and take in the views.

Isabella Causeway was also sadly the site of tragedy in 2001 when an older version of the bridge collapsed. The newly constructed bridge doubles up as a memorial for the tragedy. It is a humbling drive to pay your respects.

As the causeway is the most popular way to reach South Padre Island, you’ll likely get the chance to cross. It cuts over Laguna Madre, joining Port Isabel with South Padre Island. It is also ideally combined with a visit to Port Isabel Lighthouse. If you need to rent a car for a day, compare prices for rentals at RentalCars.com

13. Fish on the Pirate’s Landing Fishing Pier

pirates landing pier south padre Island texas

Sure, you can embark on a deep-sea fishing excursion (more on that later), but why not try your hand at traditional fishing, too? Head to South Padre’s old fishing pier for a relaxing afternoon. You can often catch tarpon, mangrove snapper, and sand trout, so sit tight and wait for that exciting first bite.

Pirate’s Landing is the longest pier in Texas and has everything you need – from a tackle and bait shop to a toilet block. The pier is located just across the causeway in Port Isabel. You’ll be casting off into Laguna Madre Bay, which has some of the best facilities just steps away.

14. Catch the fireworks

fireworks south padre Island texas

Fireworks are exciting; there’s no denying it. And it just so happens that South Padre has fireworks displays every week for most of the year. Firework displays quickly become one of the favorite South Padre Island attractions in summer. At around 9 pm most nights, you can head out to be entertained by loud noise and bright colors, all for the grand cost of zero dollars. It is easy to see why visiting a firework display has become one of the best things to do on South Padre Island.

Throughout summer, you can catch fireworks on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. On Tuesdays, the display is at Louie’s Backyard. While on Thursdays, the display is held at Isla Grand Beach Resort. Then, on Fridays and Saturdays, you can catch fireworks at The Pier behind the Courtyard by Marriott.

Of course, you can expect extra special fireworks if you visit South Padre Island on the 4th of July or Labor Day. These displays are let loose, especially over Laguna Madre Bay – a spectacle you definitely shouldn’t miss.

15. Visit the South Padre Island Farmer’s Market

south padre Island texas farmers market vegetables

Nothing quite says relaxation like a trip to a farmer’s market. South Padre Island Farmer’s Market runs every Sunday until mid-afternoon, selling local produce and handmade goods. A stroll through the stalls on a sunny Sunday midday is a heavenly thing to do on South Padre Island. It is also easily slotted into a busy itinerary, taking around 20 minutes to walk around.

You could pick up fresh veggies, sweet treats, or a handmade souvenir. You never quite know what you will find, which is all part of the fun.

16. Beach Park at Isla Blanca

A day at the waterpark is brilliant for any tourist. And what better way to beat the hot South Padre weather? You can cool down and get your adrenaline pumping all at the same time.

The beach park has an inland surf machine, a river system, and four different rollercoasters. There are even swim-up bars for the adults to indulge at. You can be zipping along water rides and grabbing poolside refreshments.

One thing to remember is that the Beach Park at Isla Blanca closes during the off-season. This is a definite summer or springtime attraction – ideal for those hot days when you can’t face any real sightseeing.

17. Take a dinner cruise

sunset cruise south padre Island texas

Boat tours are always a good idea, especially since South Padre Island waters are so tranquil and beautiful. However, splashing out on a dinner cruise is a great way to make a standard boat tour even better. Many companies offer dinner cruises around South Padre, but we’d recommend Southern Wave Sailing Charters.

Southern Wave Sailing Charters have luxury catamarans that embark at sunset to whisk tourists out for a dinner cruise they’ll remember. You can enjoy good food, drink, music, and company as you sail. Perhaps you’ll even spot bottlenose dolphins if you are lucky.

This highly rated private sunset cruise takes you out on a catamaran to enjoy beautiful views of the Texas Gulf Coast. It’s a private yacht charter for up to six passengers that can be customized to your preferences.

18. South Padre Island National Seashore

south padre Island texas sand dunes

South Padre Island National Seashore is located north of South Padre Island’s town center. You’ll need to access it by looping back across the mainland. The park protects 66 miles of stunning coastline and houses an estimated 380 bird species. The National Seashore also houses some human history, with Spanish shipwrecks from 1554.

Apart from the odd shipwreck and park sign, you can enjoy miles of undeveloped beaches and hikes. National Seashore is a remote paradise in Texas and the longest stretch of an undeveloped barrier island in the world.

While it might require a little extra effort to get there, it is easily one of the best day trips on South Padre Island. The drive takes around three hours one way, and you’ll need to rent a car to visit. If you are traveling as a group and can rotate drivers, this journey will be a breeze. You drive up to Corpus Christi and then over the John F. Kennedy Memorial Causeway to reach the National Seashore.

19. Port Isabel Historical Museum

Port Isabel Historical Museum is one of South Padre Island’s most educational attractions. With fascinating exhibits and artifacts, the museum whisks visitors back to the Mexican-American War. The Museum also delves into the local area’s history, covering Laguna Madre’s experience of the war and its early maritime beginnings. Laguna Madre’s history has been effectively condensed onto a giant timeline—so you can literally walk through the ages.

Whether you are a history enthusiast or just want to learn more about a lesser-taught piece of history, visiting this museum is a great idea. It is also one of the best indoor activities in the area, so keep it in mind on a rainy day.

20. Get on the Water

fishing at south padre Island tx

If you are an avid fisherman, deep sea fishing is an enormously alluring bucket list-worthy experience. Even those who know nothing about fishing will have seen pictures of people posing with giant fish they’ve caught at sea. To get yourself off the piers and beaches and out into the ocean, consider one of South Padre’s deep sea fishing trips.

Osprey Cruises are a popular option and operate all-year-round tours. This flexibility is fantastic for those visiting out-of-season. You’ll depart at 7:30 am for a full eight hours on the water. Osprey Cruises also provides all bait and tackle, keeping your day bag nice and light.

You can book a small half -day fishing trip with Viator in advance to fish for trout, sheepshead, and more. A valid Texas Saltwater Fishing License is required for this excursion.

Even if you decide that deep sea fishing isn’t for you, be that due to limited time or budget, there are plenty of other fishing trips. Crystal Flats Guide Service offers excellent bay fishing. Crystal Flats Guide Service doesn’t take you right out to sea. And instead, you’ll fish in particular inshore areas preferred by locals. It is a much smoother, shorter experience, so consider it as an alternative if you are relatively new to fishing. Plus many people fish right off the beach.

21. Where to Eat on South Padre Island

seafood south padre Island texas

Dine at Blackbeard’s

You can’t visit the seaside without trying seafood, and Blackbeard’s is the best spot on South Padre Island. The casual eatery might look unassuming, but don’t be fooled; it has been serving delicious seafood since 1978 and has quite the cult following.

The ginger teriyaki tuna steak is a popular choice on the menu. You can tuck in knowing that your food is fresh and locally caught. Blackbeard’s also has a great burger menu if you change your mind about seafood, including a select few vegetarian options. Casual, friendly, and full of tasty food, dining at Blackbeard’s is one of the most fun things to do on South Padre Island.

Sea Ranch is another recommendation for our foodies. Dining at the restaurant is one of the best things to do on South Padre Island if you have a passion for seafood and high-quality cuisine. You could be tucking into king crab legs or enjoying succulent Gulf Coast shrimp. The selection of seafood is varied and as fresh as possible.

Sea Ranch is located right on the harbor and edge of Laguna Madre Bay. It has never been so easy to visualize your food’s ocean-to-plate journey.

16 Top-Rated Things to Do on South Padre Island, TX

Written by Colin J. McMechan and Anietra Hamper Updated May 2, 2023

Author Anietra Hamper spent time on the road in 2022 exploring destinations in Texas, including the popular vacation town of South Padre Island.

South Padre Island has some of the best beaches in Texas and some of the best beach resorts in the United States, so it's no wonder why nearly 4.5 million tourists a year flock to this part of the "Texas Riviera." While there is a lot to do here, there are just as many ways to relax once you cross the scenic 2.5-mile Queen Isabella Causeway onto the island.

Beach on South Padre Island

The 113-mile Padre Island is the second-longest island in the contiguous United States , but here's a travel advisory to SPI newbies: Port Mansfield Channel divides South Padre Island from the northern section known as the Padre Island National Seashore. Set GPS coordinates to "South Padre Island," and enjoy a smooth ride.

Part of the appeal of South Padre Island is that it works as a vacation spot for everyone, including families on summer vacation , winter snowbirds from the north, college students on spring break , couples, and solo travelers.

As amazing as unlimited sand and surf sound, our list of best attractions, places to visit, and things to do will convince you that life on South Padre Island is a beach with considerable benefits.

Drive on the Beach

Enjoy birding and wildlife photography, befriend wildlife at south padre island birding, nature center & alligator sanctuary, get up to speed with turtles at sea turtle, inc., find your beacon of hope at port isabel lighthouse, zip along and saddle up at south padre island adventure park, pamper yourself at sapphire spa, cool off at beach park at isla blanca, take a front-row seat for a spacex starship launch, defy gravity at gravity park, take sandcastle lessons, go boarding at south padre island company, dive below the surface with american diving, cast into the surf or go deep sea fishing, swing from gulf to golf at south padre island golf club, play with your dog on the beach, map of things to do on south padre island, tx.

Driving the beach road

Your drive to South Padre Island will be pleasant, but driving your own car on the SPI beach is a thrill of a lifetime. Driving on the sand alongside crashing surf gives you a sense of freedom.

There are many points of legal access to bring your personal vehicle onto the beach from the road. To avoid getting stuck, and the cost of a tow truck to extract you from the sand, you may prefer to remain on the road instead of taking the beach route.

One of the first things to do once you cross Queen Isabella Causeway is drive north for 10 miles until the road dead-ends. For more than half of this straightaway, you'll experience the feeling of driving through sand dunes without ever leaving the pavement.

From here, you can continue on the beach by foot or bike for hours because SPI is 34 miles long. Winter Texans from the wintry north feel nostalgic when they see earthmovers clearing snow-white sand drifts from the shoulders of the road.

Dune travel on State Road 100

Want a different set of wheels (or hooves) to explore the beach? Rent a fat tire bike from one of many gear-rental shops or join a posse on horseback with a beach trip from Adventure Park.

Wherever you roam on the beach, here are a few tips:

  • Rules for driving on the beach are the same as rules on the road: Only licensed road vehicles are allowed (no OHVs or ATVs).
  • Observe speed limits (10 to 15 miles per hour).
  • If you plan to drive a long distance, make sure you go with a companion vehicle. If there's a breakdown, it could be a long walk back to civilization.
  • Watch out for sea turtles while driving on the beach, especially during nesting season between April and August.
  • Tempted by a sudden jolt of Mad Max madness to drive on the dunes? Don't! Dunes and the vegetation that grows on them serve as a natural barrier to protect SPI from seasonal hurricanes. Avoid the expense of a violation ticket, and stick to the road or beach.

After you drive along the beach, don't forget to get out and enjoy it! Prop up a chair and close your eyes as you listen to the surf and plan your next vacation move.

Some of the best beaches on South Padre Island are actually divided into sections from the two main beaches: the city beach and the county beach. Only the county portions of the beach allow driving, which is 29 miles of drivable beach on the northern portion of SPI beaches.

Redhead ducks take flight near Laguna Madre

Research and nature centers — along with a thriving flotilla of tour operators — provide ample opportunities for safe, comfortable, and exciting encounters with SPI's wildlife. Like you, nature and its creatures schedule their arrival on South Padre Island. If you're flexible, follow the annual migration of your favorite birds to SPI. Their digs are not far from where you'll be staying and dining out.

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge across the water on the mainland is an immense nature preserve of almost 40,000 hectares. That's the size of almost seven Manhattan islands strung together. SPI's backyard is a favorite place for resident birds and their snowbird cousins, fish, mammals, amphibians, and countless insects.

SPI migrations at sunset

Whether you are a birder, wildlife photographer, paddler, or nature lover, you'll enjoy endless opportunities to appreciate the natural bounty that the Rio Grande Valley and SPI have in store for you: Herons, pelicans, Mexican eagles (aka crested caracara), and flamboyant roseate spoonbills are among the more than 300 species that frequent this area.

This is the only place north of the Mexican border where you can admire the impressive plumage of green jays in the wild.

Boardwalks and bird blinds at SPI Birding and Nature Center

Surrounded by water, island residents treasure and protect the ecological chain of diversity that attracts and feeds birds, reptiles, and marine mammals. Want to strengthen the chain and get a closer look?

Grab your binoculars, camera, and water bottle, and stop by South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary . Be sure to register for one of the highly-rated birding tours with a naturalist educator.

Home to a five-story viewing tower and more than half a mile of raised boardwalks and bird blinds, this center is your ticket to experience 50 acres of protected wetlands and the critters that live here. Not only will you see the vibrant colors and varying sizes of tropical birds, you can also check out alligators, tortoises, and other reptiles.

Brown pelicans sweep across the surf

Near the center is the popular mile-long public boardwalk loop, the Laguna Madre Nature Trail . Research, conservation, and public awareness are priorities here, including the protection of an endangered species you'll see in the butterfly garden: the monarch.

Tagging a turtle at Sea Turtle, Inc.

The plight of sea turtles and their recovery may tug at your heartstrings. Sea Turtle, Inc . helps visitors like you turn these emotions into action with its year-round visitor and rehabilitation center for rescued sea turtles, most commonly the endangered Kemp's Ridley species. In addition to helping patients recover before release, it provides a home for resident turtles that will never be placed back into the wild.

One such resident is Allison — a turtle fitted with a prosthesis that enables her to swim with the assistance of human lifeguards and entertain visiting admirers from the comforts of her own tank. Her story may inspire you to return to Sea Turtle, Inc. as a valued member of its team of volunteers.

With a focus on conservation, rehabilitation, and public education, the center — located four miles north of the Queen Isabella Causeway — provides an informative self-guided waterfront experience with hourly "Turtle Talks."

Port Isabel Lighthouse

Where there is open water along a coastline populated with ocean-going vessels, you are sure to find a lighthouse that helps direct sailors on their journey. For this reason, lighthouses are often considered beacons of hope. Built as a navigational aid in 1852, the 72-foot-high Port Isabel Lighthouse has guided mariners of commercial and fishing boats into safe harbor.

Today, it stands as a symbol — not only of hope — but also of SPI's rich maritime history. This state historic site is the only lighthouse in Texas that is open to the public , along with its museum and reconstructed lighthouse keeper's cottage below the tower. Tours are self-guided so you will want to plan enough time to see everything and marvel at the view.

One of the best features to see is the 3rd Order Fresnel Lens that is on display at the top of the lighthouse. If you are afraid of heights and prefer to see its majesty from below, you will want to drive by at nighttime to see the lighthouse illuminated.

Horses on the South Padre Island beach

If your idea of leisure is being active, you will want to visit South Padre Island Adventure Park , where Park Road 100 ends and the fun begins. On 40 acres with access to the beach, the Island Adventure Park is a permanent home for rescue animals and tourists looking for a temporary escape from the rat race.

For one price, you can zipline non-stop for 45 minutes , ride horseback on the beach in an ocean wilderness for an hour, and hang out at the petting zoo. The same family-owned company operates the Island Fun Park in town, where you can get behind the wheel of a go-kart or play a round of mini-golf.

Reading on the beach

Relaxation can be deep and soothing, as well as revitalizing, and there is no better way to do that than with views of the ocean which is one of the hallmarks of the Sapphire Luxury Spa . With a self-guided SPI spa treatment, you start by untethering yourself from electronic devices, eating healthy and fresh food, taking long barefoot walks on the beach, and lazing under a sun umbrella with long-awaited pleasure reads.

Revel in this self-indulgence and go one step further: Book a Sapphire Spa massage at the Pearl South Padre Resort . Select from an extensive menu of massage and body treatments, which can be booked online to reserve a spot with your preferred therapist.

Address: 310-A Padre Blvd, South Padre Island, TX

Summer fun at a water park

Children, youth, and the young at heart can easily spend most of the day soaking in active water play at Beach Park at Isla Blanca. In cooler weather, Beach Park has an indoor water park to extend summertime fun every month of the year.

What kind of water excitement appeals to you? Thrill seekers head with boogie boards to the Surf Rider. Atmospheric adventurers track the Storm Chaser. Swimmers — who like to go with the flow — float down the chute at Aqua Blanca.

Address: 33174 State Park Rd 100, South Padre Island, Texas

Boca Chica launch facility

South of SPI is Starbase, the Boca Chica launch facility and landing pad for the SpaceX Starship . Experience the history of spaceflight in real-time by setting up your beach chair in the best location to capture rocket launches and landings. Take a drive out to Boca Chica Village to see the area that might become the futuristic community of Starbase.

Address: 54298, Boca Chica Blvd, Brownsville, Texas

Riding the Skycoaster

Look no further than Gravity Park for outside evening entertainment. While mini-golf and the arcade are fun, take control of a go-kart to pick up the pace. While a 60-foot Ferris wheel goes round and round, you can really get into the swing of things on the Skycoaster.

The Rocket is the tallest reverse-bungee in the world that flings you into the sky and lets gravity bring you back to Earth. While this ride won't take you as far as a SpaceX projectile, you are slung into orbit within seconds. Ready, set, go . . . SCREAM!!

Address: 106 West Marlin Street, South Padre Island, Texas

Shoreside sandcastle fit for royalty

South Padre Island elevates the fun of making sandcastles in the sun to an art college level. Follow the self-guided hike along the South Padre Island Sandcastle Trail of 30 castles for inspiration, and learn how to make your own sandy masterpiece by taking lessons from a sandcastle pro.

Head over to Sandcastle Lessons , where you can learn and apprentice with a master. Lessons are three hours long and it is recommended that you take them on the first days of your vacation so that you can practice your new craft during your beach visits on SPI.

Fun on the water for man and his best friend

If laying on the beach and swimming bore you, it's time to jump on board: Surfboarding, boogie boarding, wakeboarding, sailboarding, kiteboarding, flyboarding, and stand up paddleboarding . A kayak or Jet Ski rental may also float your boat.

With so many options to get you on the water, you might need a guide to get started. In addition to gear rentals and surf shops, you'll find certified and experienced instructors to make your water adventures safe and satisfying.

If you've always longed to catch a wave on a surfboard, link up with an entire family of surfers: South Padre Surf Company on the southern tip of SPI in Isla Blanca Beach Park.

Green turtle in seagrass

Beauty might be only skin deep — unless you're a skin diver. If you dip below the surface of the waters surrounding South Padre Island, you enter a world that feels like it's yet to be discovered. Like the human body, most of what SPI has to offer is comprised of water.

The protective intertidal zone of the Laguna Madre is where sea life gets its start in water that is only three to six feet deep. Snorkeling in the shallows and seagrass allows you to see an abundance of fish such as catfish, spotted seatrout, black drum, and redfish.

You might also see hermit crabs and the occasional sea turtle. Contact a local tour operator for conditions on water visibility and a guide to bring you to the best places to visit for snorkeling.

If you are certified for deep sea adventures or want to pursue scuba diving certification, SPI-based American Diving can help you aboard and serve as your guide to offshore artificial reefs.

Surf fishing on South Padre Island

The hook for many visitors to South Padre Island is a day out in the sun with a fishing rod and a bucket of bait. Shore casting from the Jetties at Isla Blanca Park is sure to snag something for dinner. Queen Isabella State Fishing Pier next to the causeway is another favorite location for this popular pastime. SPI is one of the top areas in Texas for deep-sea fishing .

Not sure what to fish for or how? Need fishing gear? Visit the local tackle shops that can set you up with what you need, from great local insider advice about the best spots to try and what's biting, to bait and rods; many shops rent fishing rods.

Putter's delight

Aside from a few putts of mini-golf, there's no golf course on SPI. Within sight of the island, however, is South Padre Island Golf Club , on the other side of Laguna Madre in nearby Port Isabel . With almost 7,000 yards from the first tee to the 18 th hole, this course will help enhance your level of play with its sumptuous surroundings and onshore breezes.

Dog flies during fetch

Bailey, Bella, and Buddy are all welcome to join you on your SPI holiday. This community also offers top activities and adventures for your favorite pet. When you sign up for a stand up paddleboard or surf lesson, make sure you arrange lessons for your dog at the same time. Eh Brah SUP and South Padre Surf Company offer guides to teach your dog how to mount a board, get a grip, and hang 10 on the next wave.

Texas Travel Guide

I went to South Padre Island and found it's becoming the Hamptons of Texas. Here's what it's like to visit.

  • In the past, South Padre Island, Texas was known for its raucous spring break parties.
  • When I visited in October, I was astonished by the new wealth on display.
  • Here's what I saw, and why I think South Padre Island is becoming the Hamptons of Texas.

Insider Today

I last went to South Padre Island (SPI) in Texas 11 years ago with my family. I was amazed at how much the small town has changed since then, and it reminded me of the Hamptons in Long Island.

South Padre Island, or SPI as it's locally known, is a coastal community in South Texas with a population of 2,816 .

I visited as a child but decided to return in October 2021 with my mother for five days. Over the course of our time there, I noticed much had changed, namely, growth and wealth on display.

It reminded me of another popular beach area: the Hamptons in Long Island, New York.

Driving from Austin to SPI was reminiscent of taking the Long Island Expressway to the Hamptons from Manhattan on a Friday afternoon.

is south padre island safe to visit

I flew from my home in Chicago to Austin to get to South Padre and the drive from Austin took five-and-a-half hours.

From the time I've spent in New York, it reminded me a lot of trying to get out to the Hamptons on Long Island for a long summer weekend.

Approaching SPI, we passed crop fields and large wind turbines. Well into the 1960s, much of the Hamptons was potato farms, and I wondered what this drive would look like in 20 years.

With its mild climate, South Texas has long been an agricultural hub , growing cotton and food staples for consumption in the US and abroad . Today, South Texas agricultural producers are diversifying; no point in letting all that wind energy go to waste.

Considering the Hamptons' potato farm history drawing many to Long Island's East End , I continued to see parallels between the two locations.

Our first glimpse of SPI was from the Queen Isabella Causeway.

is south padre island safe to visit

SPI is connected to the mainland by the Queen Isabella Causeway from Port Isabel.

Driving east across the 2.5-mile expanse of steel and concrete, I could smell the salt in the air and caught glimpses of white condominium towers that jutted up from the horizon against the gray-green seawater and blue Texas sky.

Turning off the causeway we saw palm trees swaying in the breeze, welcoming us to SPI.

South Padre Island is the southernmost tip of Padre Island, a 113-mile long barrier island that runs along the Texas coast from Corpus Christi to Port Isabel. The SPI most visitors know is only about 6 miles long and half a mile across.

SPI is likely best known as a spring break party destination for college students.

is south padre island safe to visit

Since the 1960s , South Padre Island was largely known for the college students that made their annual pilgrimage for spring break. Much of the associated partying happens at the beachfront establishment, Clayton's, which bills itself as the biggest beach bar in Texas.

Spring break culture is still alive, but from what I saw, the town has become more reflective of a broader range of tastes as money has arrived.

For example, there's a polo club on SPI that hosts United States Polo Association tournaments. Known as the "Sport of Kings," the cost of purchasing and maintaining polo horses can be steep. The SPI Equestrian and Events Center is also the home of the South Padre Island Polo Club . The South Padre Island Polo club offers polo lessons — just like the La Pampa Polo Club in East Hampton.

In 2019 , the SPI Polo Club hosted two United States Polo Association tournaments, the Hall of Fame Challenge Cup, and the General George Patton Jr. Cup.

The area as a whole also seemed more affluent than it did 11 years ago.

One of six hypersaline lagoons worldwide, the Laguna Madre runs the length of Padre Island's west side between the island and the mainland.

I noticed new single-family homes with private piers on the Laguna Madre side of SPI that seemed more opulent than they did on my last visit.

The Laguna Madre side of the island is also home to many marinas.

is south padre island safe to visit

The Laguna Madre side of SPI is protected from the wind and rain coming off the Gulf of Mexico to the island's east, and is, therefore, home to many marinas where lavish yachts dock.

Getting to the beach, however, requires getting to one of the public beach access areas on the opposite side of the island.

On the Gulf of Mexico side of SPI, high-rise condos line the beach.

is south padre island safe to visit

The Gulf side of the island is best for those who want easy access to the beach. Private homes on this stretch are rare, and instead, you'll find high-rise condos interspersed with low-rise complexes, hotels, and scattered town homes.

The southern end of the Laguna Madre is home to Elon Musk's SpaceX in Boca Chica.

is south padre island safe to visit

From a boat on the Laguna Madre, we could see the SpaceX launchpad. By car, it takes less than an hour to get from SPI to Boca Chica. By boat, it took us about 25 minutes.

Earlier this year, Musk announced his plans to create a city called Starbase , replacing the town of Boca Chica that currently houses his company's headquarters.

In fact, I also noticed a high number of Teslas on the island. There were 4 Tesla charging stations in a town with only 2.69 square miles of land.

is south padre island safe to visit

Tesla owners who make the 371-mile journey from Austin without being fully charged may have to stop along the route to recharge. But once they get to SPI, finding a charging station doesn't seem to be an issue.

Further proof of the wealth on SPI: a local restaurant offered 4 different vintages of Opus One on the wine list.

is south padre island safe to visit

A Cabernet blend, Opus One is regarded as one of the most prestigious wines out of the Napa Valley. Fine dining establishments in the Hamptons acknowledged by Wine Spectator for their wine lists carry Opus One, including Stone Creek Inn in East Quogue, and the 1770 House in East Hampton.

You could order a bottle of the 2017 vintage from Wine.com for $364 . Or, as I saw for myself at the Sea Ranch on SPI, you could order a bottle to go with your locally caught red snapper and Gulf Coast oysters and shrimp for $530.

The bar manager at the Sea Ranch told me a restaurant must be invited by the winery to sell Opus One. She said the influx of wealth to SPI has been good for business at the Sea Ranch, both food and alcohol.

Real estate is also approaching Hamptons-level prices, including this penthouse for sale for $3 million.

is south padre island safe to visit

I came across this six-bedroom, six-and-a-half-bathroom, beachfront penthouse apartment spread over two floors. The property features a wrap-around balcony, staff quarters, premium appliances, a garage, and comes fully furnished.

There are only 7 units within the property, compared to other penthouses on the island in much larger buildings.

Mickey Furcron , the agent representing the home, has been selling real estate on SPI since 1990. He told Insider he's witnessed a tremendous increase in real estate sales on the island in the past 18 months.

"It was like the doors were blown open," he said by phone. "Everyone who didn't know about SPI discovered we were here."

Furcron said that in years past, a property would be on the market for approximately nine months or longer. "Now," he said, "within a couple of days you have multiple offers of more than the list price."

Pre-pandemic, Furcron said home buyers came to SPI from the US, Canada, and Mexico, but now are mostly from the United States in places like Austin, Dallas, Houston, the Midwest, East Coast, and Colorado.

Single-family homes are less common, but also pricey, like this one listed for $2.1 million.

is south padre island safe to visit

This six-bedroom, five-bathroom, 3,656 square-foot, single-family, recently renovated home was featured on HGTV's " Beachfront Bargain Hunt ."

Located 100 feet from the beach, it has a private pool, jacuzzi, and multiple balconies. Inside, there is even a slide from the third floor that leads to a secret room on the second floor.

Gayle Hood , who has been selling real estate on SPI for 21 years, represents the sellers and told me that the owners' $2.1 million asking price is based on their projection of $240,000 in gross rental income per year. The home is listed on Vrbo for $1,407 per night .

According to Hood, the last 12 months have seen a marked increase in the luxury home market on SPI. "A couple of years ago it was difficult to find people to spend $1 million on a home," she said. "In the past year, there are more luxury home buyers."

While not a multi-million dollar mansion or penthouse, I did rent a renovated beachfront condo in a high rise.

is south padre island safe to visit

We booked a 7th-floor, two-bedroom, two-bath unit in the Aquarius Condominiums on Vrbo for its Hamptons-like laid back air of exclusivity. The complex had a pool and direct beach access via a walking path, plus fenced-in parking and a 24-hour doorman.

Everyone staying at the complex was required to wear wristbands for the duration of their stay. The doorman told me even the condo owners wear wristbands, although they were different from the guests.

The vibe was unabashedly beachy. But not cheap, in line with other South Padre Island accommodations.

is south padre island safe to visit

Beachfront two-bedroom, two-bath vacation rentals with a pool and view of the water on Vrbo can be found for as low as $115 per night , plus fees and tax. But that's for an unrenovated condo in an older building, in low season.

On the high end, you can rent an entire seven-bedroom beachfront house with a private pool for $1,833 a night .

If a hotel is preferred, a room with a private balcony and a partial ocean view at a mid-range beachfront hotel will start at around $140 per night.

We paid $1,453 for five nights at my condo vacation rental — $194 per night plus fees and tax — and was far from the cheapest vacation rental I have ever had. But it was renovated, well equipped, clean, and had great views.

Most of these options are still far cheaper than what you'll likely find in the Hamptons, but I expect as more people catch on to SPI, this will change.

Next, I set out to find what there was to do on SPI besides drive Teslas, own pricey real estate, and drink expensive wine.

is south padre island safe to visit

I observed many water sports on the bayside of SPI. Yet, despite all the activities, this area felt more private as tourists seemed to prefer the beach on the Gulf side.

Parasailing on the bay will cost between $75-$100 per person for about a 45-minute ride.

Similarly, fishing and charter tours were popular.

is south padre island safe to visit

A Laguna Madre Eco Tour with Osprey Cruises is $20 for adults, $18 for children . My mother and I took this trip and thought it was one of the highlights of our stay.

A full day of fishing on a private boat on SPI is $660 for 1-2 people , and an overnight trip for big game fish in the Gulf of Mexico — yellowfin tuna, sailfish, blue marlin — costs $4,800 .

Based on my conversations with locals, I believe that all the new wealth is a sign of more to come.

is south padre island safe to visit

As in the Hamptons , a home by the water is no longer solely for vacations or an investment. With more upper-income people telecommuting, Gayle Hood told me, "You can now do everything from the beach that you can do from home."

Hood foresees a bright future for SPI with continued growth. "They're expanding the parks here. We're hoping to get a deep-water marina. They're pushing for a second causeway," she said. "I think we're more affordable than other East or West Coast communities, or Florida."

South Padre Island is now more than just a spring break destination.

is south padre island safe to visit

After my trip to South Padre Island, I think it's gearing up to be the next Hamptons. All the new signs of wealth confirmed to me that it's much more than just a spring break party scene.

While it may have a ways to go, I can't wait to see how it continues to evolve and certainly won't be waiting another 11 years to visit.

Best Times To Visit South Padre Island

The best time to visit South Padre Island is from September to February. Unless you are planning to join in on the spring break fun – rowdy partying at all hours of the day – you'll find this tiny town rather unbearable in March. However, during the other 11 months out of the year, SPI exudes a relaxed aura perfect for sun-seekers and families. Plus hotel rates are reasonably low compared to other beach destinations. Just be advised that if you're planning a summer trip, there's a slight chance you'll encounter some unfriendly hurricane weather.

Dolphin Watching Tour of South Padre Island

Dolphin cruises are one of our favorite things to do on South Padre Island TX. The waters near South Padre Island host several resident pods of dolphins. The pods with younger dolphins are more playful and love to jump, splash, and flip in the air.

If you’re lucky, you can even spot mama dolphins with small babies by their side. The dolphins often swim alongside boats and may follow them for quite a distance.

Dolphin cruises are the most popular South Padre Island attractions

Out of the many available options, how do you select a dolphin tour?

We recommend choosing one that is eco friendly. Additionally, tours that offer a personal experience, accommodating 4 to 6 people in a small boat, are preferable to those that cater to large groups. Dolphins tend to come much closer to pontoons than they do to larger, more intimidating boats.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center

The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center is one of the most fun things to do in South Padre Island with family. The center is located right next to the Convention Center. It offers the perfect opportunity to learn about the Gulf Coast’s wildlife, including a variety of birds, pelicans, sea turtles, dolphins, and alligators.

There are several attractions at the center, including a butterfly garden, watchtower that offers bird’s-eye views of the area, birding trails, as well as an alligator sanctuary. The Nature Center entry fee is quite nominal and well worth the experience.

Indoor Attractions

The center offers informative talks about the alligators a few times during the day. For an additional price, you can choose to touch a baby alligator and a non-venomous snake afterwards. We opted for this and our kids loved the unique opportunity. The encounter is completely ethical as the baby alligator is a rescued one, and not intentionally taken from its mother.

While inside the center, you should climb up to the 5 story watchtower to see panoramic views along the Laguna Madre. The views from up there are really spectacular. This is also one of the most romantic spots on the island. On our trip, we saw a proposal take place here – complete with rose petals arranged by the Nature Center staff.

The Viewing Tower offers incredible views

Outdoor Attractions

The outdoor Monarch Butterfly Garden is the perfect place to spot a kaleidoscope of Monarch butterflies during the migrating season. Every October they celebrate butterfly migration events complete with live music, native plant sale, butterfly garden tours, and activities for kids – face painting and costume contest!

Next Stop – The Alligator Sanctuary! All the alligators in the sanctuary are rescued from roadsides, backyards, or peoples homes. The center provides them with a safe environment. From the boardwalk path, you can see several juvenile alligators sunning themselves. Keep an eye out for Big Padre, the 50-year-old resident alligator.

Boardwalk Trail as seen from the top of the Viewing Tower

The highlight of a visit to the SPI Birding and Nature Center is, however, the birding trail. This South Padre Island boardwalk trail is over 3300 feet long and takes you out over the wetlands. Visitors can spot resident as well as migratory birds including pelicans, oystercatchers, spoonbills, thrushes, falcons, several types of ducks, and warblers. The 5 bird blinds on the trail are great to sit and observe the birds.

We recommend keeping aside 2 to 3 hours to see the Nature Center exhibits and hike the trails. Be sure to stop at their gift shop before you head out. This is the best place on South Padre Island to buy ethically sourced nature-themed souvenirs.

Sea Turtle Inc

Love Sea Turtles? Want to understand sea turtle conservation and rehabilitation efforts? Head over to Sea Turtle Inc . This amazing family attraction is located next to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center.

Sea Turtle Inc plays a very important role in the community. It serves as an aquarium / animal hospital / rehabilitation center / ecotourism attraction. The center rescues and rehabilitates injured sea turtles before releasing them out into the open ocean. The center provides a permanent home to several injured sea turtles who can never be released in the wild.

It is amazing to watch the sea turtles at Sea Turtle Inc and read their stories

Any time you visit, the center is likely to have several injured marine turtle species under care and observation. Visitors can also attend a sea turtle feeding, which is an amazing experience for kids. Our son was able to feed them lettuce – a memory he remembers very well.

Sea Turtle Inc also has several exhibits that help visitors learn about the different sea turtle species. They can touch the gigantic turtle shells. Visitors also learn how human generated trash – such as plastic bottles and fishing nets – harm the sea turtles. Our kids were really moved by how the trash thrown in the ocean can change a sea turtle’s life forever. Since then they have been diligent about picking up trash on the beach.

Seeing the resident sea turtles of different sizes and species in the aquarium section is a highlight of the visit. Near every tank, you will find their extraordinary stories. Sandcastle Trail and Sea Turtle Trail

South Padre Island has several attractions for art lovers. The Sandcastle Trail is a collection of several permanent sandcastles installed all over the island. You will find them in hotel lobbies, at entrance to shops and attractions, as well as along the road. The Visitor Center has a detailed map highlighting the locations.

The Sandcastle Trail on South Padre Island has several amazing sandcastles

One of the highlights of the Sandcastle Trail is the sandcastle outside South Padre Island Visitor Center. This is the largest Outdoor Permanent Sandcastle in the USA. It was originally built in October 2013.

The sandcastle has intricate and detailed formations including a dragon, tower, castle, butterflies, fishes, lighthouse, and even faces. You can also read more information about the artist near the sandcastle.

We love seeing the sandcastles on South Padre Island

The Visitor Center is a good place to stop by for recommendations on island attractions, eateries, hotels, and seasonal events. They also have free and clean restrooms.

Holiday Sandcastle Village is another great stop on the Sandcastle Trail. It originally began as a Christmas event, but has expanded into a year round event. Located near Gravity Park, the tent venue is home to amazing themed sandcastles that are updated for occasions such as Valentines Day and Spring Break.

We also love the Sea Turtle Art Trail . This trail features vibrant painted fiberglass sea turtles placed at strategic locations throughout the island. Each turtle is decorated with its own unique design, making for colorful photo opportunities.

Entrance to Laguna Madre Nature Trail

Laguna Madre Nature Trail

Laguna Madre Nature Trail is our favorite nature trail on South Padre Island. This boardwalk trail is free to all visitors and starts near the South Padre Island Convention Center. It offers an excellent introduction to the island’s rich wildlife.

Laguna Madre Nature Trail is one of the fun free things to do in South Padre Island.

This 1500 foot long boardwalk trail crosses the marshes and takes you out to the lagoon. Walking on the trail, you can easily spot many resident and migratory birds including swooping pelicans and spoonbills. The trail has many bird blinds where you can watch the birds without scaring them away.

The trail is kid-friendly and our kids love to watch the seabirds dive to catch fish. You can also see butterflies, hummingbirds, and other songbirds on the trail.

Looking to make the most of your time here? Bring binoculars and/or telephoto zoom lenses for photos and plan a trip around sunset to enjoy the beautiful views over the Bay.

South Padre Island Convention Center Murals and Photo-ops!

South Padre Island Convention Center enjoys a stunning spot overlooking the Laguna Madre Bay. The building itself is worth a visit – it’s architecture and perfect location guarantees amazing photographs!

One of the main attractions here is Wyland Whaling Wall which you can easily spot from the parking lot. The Whaling Walls are a beautiful series of murals all over the world by marine life artist Robert Wyland. There are 100 such whaling walls in existence and they are created to increase awareness and conservation efforts for whales.

South Padre Island Whaling Wall

The SPI whaling wall features the orcas or killer whales that live off the Gulf of Mexico. Along with orcas, you can also see bottlenose dolphins and other whales. The mural is beautiful and very photogenic.

Along with the mural, you will also spot giant beach chairs which are very popular Instagram spots on the island. Walk around the convention center and take in views of Laguna Madre Bay while you are here. The facility building is beautiful and you can spot many birds along the shore.

Queen Isabella State Fishing Pier is a popular spot for fishing. The pier has benches, bait stands, fish cleaning stations – everything you need for a successful day of fishing. Our family loves to spend an afternoon here watching the sunset and trying our luck at catching some dinner.

Shopping on South Padre Island

South Padre Island is the best place to shop for tropical clothes, beachwear, trinkets, and souvenirs. The souvenir shops are located on both sides of Padre Blvd, which functions as the Main Street of the island. Along with souvenirs, they also rent ATVs, golf carts, and bikes to visitors.

Most popular souvenirs to buy at South Padre Island include SPI t-shirts, magnets, ornaments, postcards, glass bottles filled with seashells, mugs, and home decor. The shops also sell a lot of beach essentials including swimsuits, coverups, sundresses, shorts, hats, sunscreen, and beach toys.

South Padre Island is excellent for shopping fun

Looking to save? Go window shopping: one of the best free things to do in South Padre! You will also notice many flea market style shacks around the island. The jewelry and trinkets sold here are beautiful and quite cheap. They even custom made a sea turtle necklace for my toddler son.

Want to shop more? Other great shops around the island include Unruly Cactus on Port Isabel – a fantastic bookstore, BS kites which sells beautiful kites, and also Art Sea Gallery and Goods for all kinds of seashell gifts.

Hidden Gems on South Padre Island

Next up are these South Padre Island secret spots that only locals and those who have truly visited the island know about! We enjoy exploring such hidden gems and they make up for great travel tales.

Cristo de Los Pescadores statue

On the south side of the island, within Isla Blanca Park, you will find the statue of ‘Christ of the Fishermen’ or Cristo de Los Pescadores . This memorial is built to honor fishermen that were lost at sea. Along the base of the statue, you will discover sad but beautiful inscriptions written in memory of those who never returned. Reading the epitaphs is a moving experience.

Cristo de Los Pescadores Statue on South Padre Island

The statue reminds me of ‘Christ the Redeemer’ in Brazil with its open arms and kind expression. The views of the Gulf from near the statue are stunning. There is a picnic table located just near the statue, which is perfect for a nice lunch.

Visitors need to pay a small fee to access this area on the south side of the island, but that gives access to many amenities including the pristine beaches and changing rooms found here.

Gorgeous views of the Gulf Coast on South Padre Island

Playa Blanca

At the southernmost tip of the island, inside the Isla Blanca Park , you will find the beautiful Island Blanca beach. Better known as Playa Blanca, this beach is one of the least crowded ones on the island due to the entry fee required to visit this part of the island.

Many visitors who stay near the north side of the island in large resorts and hotels, simply miss out on this excellent beach. You will also find a large boardwalk here as well as restrooms and other amenities. We love visiting this beach and always have great fun playing in the sand and swimming in the water.

Isla Blanca Beach Park has a nice bordwalk area

Chapel By The Sea

Chapel by the Sea is a must for those who are looking for a place to worship on the island as well as architecture lovers. This is one of the most charming churches I have stumbled upon. It is located on the south side of the island near Isla Blanca Park.

The exterior is a striking white-washed building set amongst the swaying palm trees. Mosaic tile steps will take you inside the chapel. The interior is equally gorgeous. The floor to ceiling windows make the chapel airy and full of natural light. The windows offer amazing views of the island.

The service here is a powerful spiritual experience. You will see a lot of Winter Texans walk in flip flops and beachwear to attend service. The sermon is straight from the Bible and the music is excellent. The church also holds many other activities throughout the year. The Chapel by the Sea is also a popular wedding spot on South Padre Island.

Port Isabel Lighthouse

The Port Isabel Lighthouse is located across the Queen Isabella Causeway, just 10 minutes away from South Padre Island. This is the only lighthouse in Texas that you can climb. The historic light and the surrounding buildings are preserved as Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site .

Visiting the lighthouse is an amazing experience. You can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a nominal entry fee and see the beautiful 360 views from above. The spiral staircase and ladders to the top make for a very thrilling climb. At the top, you can enjoy bird’s eye views of Port Isabel, Laguna Madre, and South Padre Island.

Sand board the South Padre Sand Dunes

Very few visitors know of South Padre Island’s hidden gem: the towering sand dunes !

To reach these gigantic dunes, drive north on Padre Blvd. Drive past the Convention Center. Go past all the buildings and development, and you will reach a large area where the huge sand dunes spread in every direction.

The beaches on the northern edge of the island are covered in dunes

Along the way, you will see several beach accesses which you can use to drive over the dunes. However, you will need a 4WD to drive over the sand. These dunes often move and take over the road in windy seasons.

The sand dunes are simply beautiful and fun to explore. You can climb to the top of the dunes and then enjoy sand boarding to their base. The views of the Gulf Coast and Laguna Madre from the top of the sand dunes are magnificent.

Dune bashing is amongst the most unique things to do in South Padre Island

Summer Fireworks

Watching the summer fireworks over the water is one of our top activities on South Padre Island at night. The island goes big on celebrating sultry summer nights with a grand firework display at 9:15 pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

The fireworks take place at different locations such as Loui’s Backyard and Clayton’s Beach Bar. Enjoying a date night watching the stunning display over the Gulf waters while sipping on a cocktail is one of the best things to do in South Padre Island for couples. You can check out the firework schedule here .

Beach Park At Isla Blanca

The Beach Park at Isla Blanca previously used to be Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark. You will still find many locals who call it Schitterbahn!

Thankfully, the change in ownership hasn’t lessened the fun and the waterpark is one of the best things to do on South Padre Island with kids on a hot summer day.

The water park is located on the south side of the island within Isla Blanca Park. The park has many rides and attractions including lazy river, surf riders, water slides, as well as a swim up bar. It also has cabanas with BBQ grills – you can bring in your own cooler and enjoy a meal here.

The Island Adventure Park also has a petting zoo where younger kids can pet goats and feed pigs, llama, and chickens. The littles can also enjoy pony rides at the park.

Their horseback tours take you out horseback riding on the beach. The early morning rides are the best as you can enjoy your ride in complete seclusion on an empty stretch of beach. You can also opt for sunset or moonlight rides if you’re focusing on romance.

Bobz World , located in nearby Los Fresnos, has a large laser tag arena and is a hit with young adults and teens. Other activities at Bobz World include arcade games and bowling. They also have an on-site gift shop and cafe that serves Blue Bell ice cream.

Beachcombing at South Padre Island

We love to go beachcombing while visiting South Padre Island. Our kids enjoy having their own buckets and hunting for seashells. We can easily spend a couple of happy afternoons on the beach, bucket in hand, looking for treasures.

Gather sea shells on South Padre Island beaches

South Padre Island is a great place to go beachcombing as the powerful Gulf current brings a lot of things to the shore. You can find driftwood, seashells, seeds, dried seaweed, sea glass, and other unique items. Even sea fossils are said to wash up frequently at South Padre Island. Go just after high tide and you’ll find some of the best treasures from the sea.

If you are lucky, you can find large isolated areas on the island where there are few other beachgoers and an entire empty beach full of treasures where you can beach comb to your heart’s content. You can bring any treasures that you find back home. We have been able to find seashells, sea glass, and sea pebbles at South Padre Island.

Be careful of dangerous things like pufferfish which might wash up on South Padre Island beaches

We have also found a washed-up pufferfish among other things, so I’d recommend everyone to be careful and watch where you step on the beach.

Charters and Cruises in South Padre Island

Sunset cruises are extremely romantic and depending on the company you can also go for a champagne cruise or plan a romantic anniversary or honeymoon celebration. This is also a great way to propose on the island and a top among romantic activities to do in South Padre Island for couples.

In the summers, you can enjoy firework cruises from Dolphin Docks in Port Isabel. The fireworks take place on the bayside on Thursdays and Fridays at 9:15 pm.

In addition to these activities, you can also book your own charters or rent a catamaran. We recommend booking these for fishing charters, sunset cruises, and dolphin cruises. Deep sea fishing trips on the island are exceedingly popular.

Sandcastle Lessons

South Padre Island is known as the Sandcastle Capital of the world. The sand here is so soft and fine that it makes excellent sandcastles. Apart from the sandcastles on the sandcastle trail, you will find several other sandcastles throughout the island. You can also find locals building the sandcastles on the beach.

Closed Attractions

Why do we keep information about closed attractions? Multiple reasons. Sometimes, attractions close temporarily and can reopen in the future. Sometimes readers want to know why they can no longer find an attraction and this list helps them figure out why.

South Padre Island Dolphin Research & Sealife Nature Center

SPI Dolphin Research Center is a great educational opportunity to learn about the most intelligent marine creatures – the dolphins. The center promotes dolphin education and marine life conservation. It is located in Port Isabel, Texas just across the causeway from South padre Island.

The center has several dolphins for visitors to see and connect to. Visitors can also see other rescued animals like sea turtles, tortoises, iguana, fish, crabs, octopus, and snails. Kids can touch and feed the animals and learn more about them. It is easy to understand why the Dolphin Research Center is amongst the best places to visit in South Padre Island for families.

Dolphin cruise on pontoon boat with South Padre Island Dolphin Research and Nature Center

The center also offers eco-friendly dolphin cruises. Their dolphin tours are on smaller pontoon boats that don’t disturb marine life. They do not drag nets through the water to trap creatures for tourists to see like few other tours. Instead, they take you out on the water to see the marine animals in their natural environment.

The person who makes this magic happen is Scarlett, the dolphin whisperer and her friendly dolphin dogs who can sense the dolphins before you see them. She takes you down in her well-maintained pontoon. Families love seeing the dolphins and kids are amazed to see them leap and play in the water.

The center as well as its dolphin tours are currently closed .

The best time to visit South Padre Island is anytime . Still, the off-season is from September to February for pleasant weather (average temperature is 79 degrees during the day and 65 degrees at night) and fewer crowds. Everything is still open all year.

The peak season in South Padre is Memorial Day to Labor Day. If you’re wondering about the peak hurricane season in SPI, it’s August to early October.

Tracking Tropical Storm Francine: South Padre Island residents preparing for potential severe weather

Ocean tide levels were up to one and a half feet higher than normal Monday at South Padre Island as Tropical Storm Francine began forming on the Gulf of Mexico.

People along the coast say they’re preparing for worse weather to come.

“You're not advised to go out to the water or swim or get into the water,” SPI Fire Chief Jim Pigg said. "Right now we're just monitoring it and making sure that we're ready for any flooding type situations."

According to the Associated Press, Tropical Storm Francine is expected to affect coastal Mexico and Texas before making landfall in Louisiana on Wednesday.

Inland flooding on streets and parking lots was seen at the island as residents prepared for the potential for worse weather.

The Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway will remain open unless sustained wind speeds reach or exceed 45 miles an hour.

AEP Texas says it has extra crews on standby for power outages.
