So Sew Easy

Travel and Passport Wallet Pattern

Essential Family and Travel Passport Wallet. This one contains space for a family of 2 or 4 - much more useful.

Going away somewhere exotic or far-afield?  Or maybe you just need somewhere to keep your passports and travel documents safe between trips so you’ll always know where to lay your hands on them.

The Pattern of the Month for March is the essential family travel and passport wallet pattern.  It can hold travel documents for a family and speed you through check in and security without having to rummage through bags to find everything.

Essential Travel Wallet b

This handy travel and passport wallet pattern has:

  • Two short pockets for ID cards, credit card etc
  • Two medium pockets for your passports
  • Two larger pockets for boarding passes or e-tickets
  • Two large pockets behind for other documents or extra passports
  • An elastic pen holder
  • Optional clip to hold locker or luggage keys
  • Sturdy design
  • Loop and button closure
  • Finished size approx – 9.5 inches tall, by 5.5 inches wide, by 0.75 inches deep

It's also nice and easy to sew.  The only tricky part where you need to be quite neat, is sewing the binding around the outside.  Check out these earlier articles on binding and practice a little before hand if you need to.

Let's see what the Pattern Testing Team made

Theresa at the DIY Page –  From the moment I saw the pattern I knew I wanted to sew it. Many of my friends are snowbirds and it would make a great gift for them.   I did the button differently, since hair tie elastics are not something I have on hand. From my husband's travel wallet, I made a belt strap instead to go with the luggage theme of the fabric.

Essential Family and Travel Passport Wallet. This one contains space for a family of 2 or 4 - much more useful.

Louise –  I liked it. I may use it more for coupons and fabric swatches rather than passports, etc, since I had just ordered one that is rfid protected. Loved use of different colors, and colored hair elastics for the closure.

Essential Family and Travel Passport Wallet. This one contains space for a family of 2 or 4 - much more useful.

Emma – I thought it was a great design and will be a useful item for travelling – in fact I am off on holiday this Saturday and will be taking it with me!    I stabilised one side of each pocket piece and used fusible fleece for the front/back cover sections. I first of all cut two pieces of mount board – but thought it would be too stiff.  An idea for an addition – possibly a plastic clear patch pocket on the front for a name or ID to be slipped in?

Essential Family and Travel Passport Wallet. This one contains space for a family of 2 or 4 - much more useful.

Diane –  very cute – liked your choice of fabrics – something we all need.

Jemma –  I liked the shapes of the curves and that it has lots of pockets.

Linda –  When I first saw the pattern, I was thinking what I great idea. I've seen a lot of wallet pattern on the net but I had never seen a pattern for a travel wallet and for having traveled with my family this would of been so handy to have. None of those documents fits into a standard wallet and they are so precious so to have them all in one place is great. One place to check before leaving home that you have everything you need. I love all the pockets so it can contain so many documents but easy to find them. The pen holder and the key holder adds to the wallet making it more complete. Great pattern and could make wonderful gifts. Great also for using those pieces of fabric that are left over from other projects!!

Essential Family and Travel Passport Wallet. This one contains space for a family of 2 or 4 - much more useful.

Sarah –  I wasn't sure what to expect. I do not travel by any means other than by car. Despite living directly on the border with Canada I don't have a passport either. We use enhanced driver licenses. I had no preconceived ideas about the project when I began.  This is a very quick and easy project that sews up nicely. I selected intermediate skill level because it is necessary to have experience with using binding.

Essential Family and Travel Passport Wallet. This one contains space for a family of 2 or 4 - much more useful.

Sara from Made by Sara –  It is a great wallet! It has all the important pockets to carry all travelling documents. I love everything about it! I love all the details like the swivel clip and the pen holder. You have thought of everything!  I made my front pockets out of clear vinyl so the cards could be seen without taking them out. I was hesitating on rating this pattern as a Beginner or Intermediate because of the bias binding, but I could see myself doing it when I was a beginner… I would say any beginner who is a bit more adventurous, confident, would manage to make this pattern. Maybe you could rate it as a Confident Beginner?

Sara

Diya from the Hobby Harbor –  super useful. That describes it best.   It was a breeze to sew it up.   I added a light cardboard to the curved pockets as well for stiffness.

Diya

Robin from The Pattern Tester –  I really like the travel wallet, and find that it will be a useful pattern for most people. I would rate it an intermediate pattern because the binding can be a little tricky if you're not use to it, and also sewing around the curved pockets. I don't care for the elastic pen holder. I'm not sure if it will work if you use a larger pen, and then switch to a smaller sized pen, due to some stretching. I prefer to make a pocket for the pen, but may just omit it altogether because I'm afraid of a pen leaking on my passport.

Essential Family and Travel Passport Wallet. This one contains space for a family of 2 or 4 - much more useful.

Diane C –  it's done in time for my sister's trip to Japan.  I really like how nice it turned out.

Love this pattern, this is about the 4th one I’ve made, this time for a friend.Instructions are great, and it all fits together beautifully.

I made this travel/passport wallet a few years ago – may be when you first offered it. I have to say it is perfect! Holds passports, airline tickets, hotel/cruise documents and perfect size to have in my crossbody or full purse so I always had these important documents with me.

Joyce Schroeder

Thank you for the free travel wallet pattern. This will make a nice gift for my grandson when he travels abroad following high school graduation.

Regarding your change of email distribution companies, I applaud your desire to cut your costs. However, I bristled at your suggestion to move my emails from you into my Gmail inbox instead of my “promotions” box. I find (for myself) that keeping certain emails in “promotions” tells me exactly what I need to know about the emails I am receiving. I get HUNDREDS of emails daily, and having the ability to go to promotions first takes me to exactly the kind of emails I WANT to see, not all the gobbledygook that finds its way into my inbox. So, respectfully, I will continue to keep my emails from you in the promotions section, if you don’t mind.

Otherwise, I am enjoying the emails I receive from you. Generally I can find something informative quite often. Thank you for taking the time to put bright spots into my days.

Marcia Dumas

Thank you so much for the free instructions. I have your wallet patterns from Craftsy ( a long time ago!).

I enjoy your emails too. Keep up the good work.

Ellisen

Thank you for this great pattern. Very kind + generous of you to share it with us.

Amanda Bibble

I’m really looking forward to making this pattern, one for my passport and one for my insurance card and registration information for my car!

Karen Little

My son and I had wonderful passport wallets when we went to Norway in 1994! Similar to these but definitely not as refined! My son and his family are going to the US in October and this will be a great help to them. When they went last time they tried to use a fabric zippered pouch but everything got all mixed up together they said! So I shall be starting this as soon as I get my sewing machine set up — I moved 3 weeks ago and there has been so much to organize before I could get to what I really enjoy doing 🙂 Thank you for this wonderful gift. I hope your transition goes smoothly, any change for a small business can/often is fraught with unexpected “issues”. Praying that all will go well for you.

Rochelle Summers

Thank you for the pattern. I look forward to continuing to receive your emails.

Peg Hambrecht

Thanks so much for this pattern. God Bless!

NanaJo

I found this pattern complicated, only one pattern piece for the multiple materials that need to be cut out. A big disappointment.

Kristina L Howden

Thank you for the freebie consolation prize. I am not sure when I will need a passport holder, but now I have a pattern to make one. Super cute too!

Thank you for offering this free pattern.

I am looking forward to making it up in some travel fabric and use cork for the outside of wallet.

Susan

Thank you. I am going to give this a try when I can get my sewing machine fixed.

Karin van Loenen

Geweldig patroon.

heather

this is wonderful! thank you for your generosity! have a relaxing summer 🙂

Lesley Brough

I would make one change to this and that is to use a zip all round to close. I would be afraid of anything falling out. I have done a purse that is similar and made all the slots face inwards for the same reason.

Sofia

Adorable! I love it:-) The colors and designs are so freindly. I have made one of these a while ago, but I added sew in magnets and a flap, cause I didn’t want to use a regualr button.

Mandie

Oh my gosh!! Magnets!! Thats such a good idea!!

crystal

About the only thing that could improve on this wallet is to add a RFID shield to prevent information from your passport chip and cards stored inside being stolen

Crystal, why not make one layer (perhaps an “interfacing” layer) out of RFID fabric? That should solve the problem!

Nancy cunningham

Can you do the Family travel wallet outside with seatbelt material .? Have lots of pieces left over from making seatbelt purses . It would stay clean and durable if it’s the outside of wallet . Thanks Nancy

Mayra Cecilia

Yes I believe so.

Odette Schlumpf

I’ve fallen in love with this pattern. I’ve made about 5 so far. In South Africa we don’t get peltex and I don’t want to use cardboard. I wanted something that I could sew through to attach the binding. I finally found that a thin lightweight piece of carpet works well!

Margie Wegner

Wish I had had this for my last cruise, and will definitely be taking with me when I travel from now on, its perfect for getting thru customs at the cruise port. Last time I didn’t have a pen on me and needed one to sign a document (the port personnel were reluctant but did finally allow me to use theirs:} ). Now I’ll always have one handy….

Julie Amma

Absolutely love this pattern. I made 26 of these passport holders for gifts. I disney themed the lot of them and my grandsons will give them out on their 10th birthday while we are on a cruise.

Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

travel document holder sewing pattern

I am taking my first ever vacation with my husband alone to Ireland and decided to create this easy to make and free DIY passport wallet pattern to carry both of my passports, my identification and credit cards as well as my phone and money all in one place.  It was amazing just how easy this travel wallet pattern came together and how little time it took to make.  I hope that you will think the same and give this travel-passport wallet a try.

What you will Need:

  • 1/4 yd. outer fabric
  • 1/4 yd. interior fabric

travel document holder sewing pattern

  • 1 3/4″ Piece of 1/2″ elastic

Step 1: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Cut Pattern pieces as follows:

  • 2 Pieces 2 1/2″ x 9″ of outer fabric and 1 piece of interfacing using either Pellon SF101 or 808 depending on how stiff you want your wallet to be.  I used SF 101 for all Pieces but the large backing pieces.
  • 2 Pieces 3″ x 9″ of lining fabric and 1 piece of interfacing
  • 2 Pieces 3 1/2″ x 9″ of lining fabric and 1 piece of interfacing
  • 2 Pieces 4″ x 9″ of lining fabric and 1 piece of interfacing
  • 2 Pieces 5″ x 9″ of lining fabric and 1 piece of interfacing
  • 2 Pieces 4 7/8″ x 5 1/2″ of outer fabric and 1 piece of interfacing
  • 2 Pieces 9 1/8″ x 9″ and 1 piece of interfacing.  1 Piece of outer fabric and 1 piece of lining fabric.   I used Pellon 808 for this piece.
  • 1 Piece of 2″ x 14″ for strap and 1 piece of interfacing
  • 2 of each of the pattern Pieces

Step 2: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

All seam allowances are 1/4″.  Interface one side of the ticket pocket by fusing the Pellon 808 according to the package directions.  If you have never used interfacing just cut out the piece and lay the wrong side of your fabric onto the glue side of your interfacing and press with a hot iron.  This will fuse the pieces together and give your wallet more structure.  . Fold the piece of elastic and baste it to the side of the ticket pocket to be used as a pen holder with the fold facing inwards.  Place the two pocket pieces right sides together and sew around the top curve to the bottom edge leaving the bottom and ling side open.  Turn right sides together and press. Top stitch around seam.  Set aside.

Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Step 3: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Interface the 5″ x 9″ Piece and sew the two pieces right sides together along 1 long edge.  Turn right sides out and press. Top stitch the seam.

Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Step 4: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Sew the top and side of the 4 7/8″ x 5 1/2″ piece right side together.  Turn right side out and press and top stitch as you did the other pieces.  Sew this piece to the ticket pocket on the side following your previous stitching.  Baste the pieces to the 5″ x 9″ piece you previously prepared and baste along raw edge.

Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Step 5: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Next, sew your card pockets.  These include:

Each is made the same way.  Interface each with SF101 or the interfacing of your choice and sew the two pieces right sides together along one long edge only.  Turn right side out and top stitch along the seam.  Once all of the pieces are finished. Stack the pieces on top of each other.  Fold in half to find the center and mark.  Top stitch through all layers 1/4″ on each side of the center line. This will hold the card pockets together.

Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Step 6: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Interface the interior piece measuring 9 1/8″ x 9″.  Place the card pockets on the right side of the piece so that the 9″ sides line up with the card pockets and baste along the edge.

Step 7: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Place the Passport Pocket layers on the left side of the interior piece and baste.

Step 8: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Create the strap and the swivel clip holder by folding the 2″ x 14″ piece in fours so that the raw edges are embedded inside the folds.  Top stitch along both sides.  Cut 1″ from the strap and fold it in half placing the swivel clip inside and baste to the interior piece between the ticket pocket stack and the card pockets.

Free DIY Passport wallet Pattern

Step 9: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Create the Tab closure.  I interfaced this with Pellon 808.  Sew the piece right sides together.  Turn right side out and press.  Top stitch around the curve leaving the bottom open. Add the male portion of the magnetic snap to the top part of the curve on the interfaced side. Make sure that the prongs are on the inside and hidden.

Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Step 10: Free DIY Passport Wallet Pattern

Center the tab closure on the right side of the piece with the card slots and baste.

Thanks for the link to the World Map fabric, very helpful. Can you please tell me what the internal fabric is too? It looks really stained or something, I just love it! Thanks!

I do not recall the fabric name. It was a remnant that I got at Joann and it does have a patchy stained look. I wish I could be of more help.

Thanks for making this available! I’m trying to make one for my wife, but I’m having trouble with some of the instructions. It states ‘Interface one side of the ticket pocket by fusing the Pellon 808 according to the package directions.’ What are the dimensions of the ticket pocket? It doesn’t reference it in the cutting pattern 🙂

Thank you for contacting me. The ticket pocket is part of the downloadable pattern pieces. Just click on the link and download the pieces and you will see it. Please feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks very much! If I print on A4, will the pattern be the correct size?

I believe so as A4 is just a larger piece of paper.

Thanks very much for your help.

You are welcome.

Hi I’m interested in making this but the linked pattern is only one page, the tab closure and the ticket pocket, please help as having looked at a few pass port holders I like yours the best

The rest of the pattern is just rectangles that are described in the tutorial. You do not need any more pattern pieces.
