"The trip far exceeded my expectations…"

Before I set off on the next stage of my travels tomorrow, I wanted to tell you what a fantastic time I had Thursday and Friday on Kangaroo Island.

The trip far exceeded my expectations and was everything I could have wished for. My aunt was absolutely right when she told me Kangaroo Island was my sort of place.

Thank you so much for your help in the planning stages. Please would you pass on my thanks to Greg, Steve and Roanna for their considerable contributions to such an enjoyable and memorable two days.

Rose, New South Wales

"Best 3 days of my life!"

We had Coralie take us around KI for three days. The first day we were with another couple and the last two we just happen to be alone. I don’t even know how to summarize our experience.

We learned so much about living on KI, the animals (how the people rescue the baby Joeys from a kangaroo‘s pouch if the mom had been killed on the road), the weather, the plants and all about life on this remote and incredible island. The delicious lunches were included and we ate at a variety of beautiful locations.

This was the best tour experience we have ever had. Don’t look elsewhere, book with this company.

"We are still raving on about our time on KI!"

We are still raving on about our time on KI. We have both discovered KI sheep yoghurt in our local shops. A great reminder of our KI visit. As a travel cynic long on cruises, churches, museums, town squares, national dress, etc,

I found Kangaroo Island Wilderness Tours to be equal to and in most cases better than many off shore tourist operations.

You are miles better than other tours that we have been on in Australia. Speedy, along with all the others in the back office, did you proud. Many thanks to all at KIWT.

Andrew, Western Australia

"If you go to KI, go with these guys. You won’t regret it."

If you go to Kangaroo Island get Peter of Wilderness Tours to show you the place. You will come away with a lot more than Seal, Kangaroo, and Koala pictures. You will come away with a feeling that you fit in, that you were not really a tourist only there for a few days.

You will remember Kangaroo Island but more you will remember the trip itself long after the Kangaroos have faded, save for the pictures.

If you go to Kangaroo Island (which you certainly should do) go with these guys. You won’t regret it.

Next up is one of the island's most famed beaches, Stokes Bay, with beautiful white stretches, ideal for spotting shorebirds and seabirds. This region also provides regular wildlife encounters include Tammar Wallabies, Kangaroo Island Kangaroos, with Short-beaked Echidnas, Rosenberg's Goanna (warmer months) and a vast range of woodland birds sighted often.

KI in Style - Hero 12

Craig Wickham - Owner & Guide

Travel inland through some of the island's most productive farmland, before breaking for lunch on a private property amongst the redgum forest. Lunch is an elegant seafood barbecue featuring King George whiting, halloumi, potatoes and fresh garden salad served with local wine, beer, soft drinks and spring water.

After lunch, guests will continue south to Seal Bay, where coastal mallee transitions through coastal heath into dunes.

This is the opportunity to encounter the third largest colony of Australian Sea-lions on a privately guided tour, where guests will learn about the feeding and breeding behaviour of these photogenic creatures.

How you'll be making a positive impact

E-WEB-Goal-15

Exceptional Kangaroo Island contributes observations of flora & fauna via iNaturalist, the world’s leading global social biodiversity network. This platform allows our team to create research-quality citizen science data that enables a more detailed picture of our national biodiversity, and assists bodies such as the CSIRO, ecologists and other decision makers to deliver better outcomes for the environment and our species.

Our guides record observations with iNaturalist Australia by using the iNaturalist app on mobile phones or desktop computers. An observation records an encounter with an individual organism at a particular time and location on Kangaroo Island. We require photos to be attached to observations for them to become research grade and added to the Atlas of Living Australia.

This is where you can greatly assist us in capturing images out in the field! Although we make broader observations that we think are valuable to the local scientific community, we have identified the following species to track when we are exploring Kangaroo Island by vehicle, e-bike or by foot.

Key species we're looking out for include:

  • Glossy Black-Cockatoo
  • Rosenberg's Goanna
  • Hooded Plover
  • White-bellied Sea-Eagle
  • Bush Stone-curlew
  • Southern Emu-wren

E-WEB-Goal-04

To reinforce responsible behaviours around iconic species unique to the island, Exceptional Kangaroo Island has developed a Wildlife Code of Conduct and Guest Briefing Card referencing responsible behaviours for iconic species including the Glossy-Black Cockatoo, Hooded Plover, Australian Sea-lion, Kangaroo Island Kangaroo and Short-beaked Echidna.

Kangaroo Island separated from mainland Australia around 10,000 years ago, due to rising sea level after the last glacial period. Due to this long isolation, the island is renowned for the number of subspecies and as a critical breeding, resting or feeding ground for rare species. To reinforce responsible behaviours around these iconic species unique to the island, Exceptional Kangaroo Island has developed a Wildlife Code of Conduct and Guest Briefing Card referencing responsible behaviours for iconic species including the Glossy-Black Cockatoo, Hooded Plover, Australian Sea-lion, Kangaroo Island Kangaroo and Short-beaked Echidna.

This involves sharing a factsheet educating people about sensitive sites and times such as courtship or breeding season that require increased awareness of possible disturbances, such as avoiding known nest hollows of Glossy Black-Cockatoos, beach nesting sites of Hooded Plovers and breeding times for Australian Sea-lions where increased stresses in the colony can bring increased risk to observers. This also reinforces the importance of appropriate behaviour around more elusive animals on the mainland such as the Short-beaked Echidna, who can suffer from “capture myopathy”, which is death or shock due to handling stress.

E-WEB-Goal-06

Exceptional Kangaroo Island’s tour base in Cygnet River includes an aerobic waste water management unit that captures and recycles water from the office, commercial kitchen, bathrooms and wash bays. That water is then used to water the surrounding plants and trees - including the primary food source for the endangered Glossy Black-Cockatoo.

Locally-sourced plants have been established outside of the tour base, including the Drooping Sheoak (Allocasuarina verticillata), which is a vital food source for the endangered Glossy Black-Cockatoo. Since planting this species, the cockatoos feed regularly in front of the office.

The planting of sheoaks by the Exceptional Kangaroo Island team, community volunteers and conservation partners such as KI Land for Wildlife and Bio·R has been critical given that 54% of sheoak feeding habitat was lost in the 2019/2020 summer bushfires. Much of this habitat will grow back from seed over 15-20 years, however, the continued commitment is required to ensure this beautiful cockatoo continues to increase in numbers.

E-WEB-Goal-17

Exceptional Kangaroo Island have developed a number of partnerships with key environmental organisations on Kangaroo Island and more broadly in South Australia, including Bio·R, Pelican Lagoon Research Station, Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlife, National Parks & Wildlife South Australia and Birdlife Australia.

Bio·R, Pelican Lagoon Research Station and Kangaroo Island Land for Wildlfie are all supported financially via touring experiences provided by Exceptional Kangaroo Island.

This mini Galapagos is one of Australia’s most beautiful and underrated wildlife sanctuaries

Arriving on Kangaroo Island feels like you’ve stepped back in time. Kids still ride bikes to school, and farmers chase kangaroos off their front lawns before dawn. But it’s the local wildlife that’s the real drawcard. Fur seals, dolphins,  Australian  sea lions, echidnas, koalas and, of course, kangaroos, have flourished here without the threat of species introduced to the mainland. The island also boasts some of the country's  best beaches, pristine hiking trails  and lip-smacking local produce.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How do I get to Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island is located 9 miles (14km) off the  South Australian  coast. To get there, you'll need to take the ferry from Cape Jervis or fly from Adelaide.

You can fly to Kangaroo Island from Adelaide and several other cities in Australia (subject to seasonal demand), or catch a ferry to Penneshaw from Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The ferry takes around 45 minutes.

When is the best time to visit Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island is a beautiful spot to visit at any time of year. Summer is generally hot and dry, and winter is mild. Spring and Fall are perfect for bushwalking, fishing and seeing the island's native flowers in bloom.

What should I pack for Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island is a casual place so you can leave your dressy clothes at home. Layered, breathable clothing is key, as while it can be chilly when you set off in the morning, it can warm up substantially throughout the day. You'll also need a pair of comfy walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat (even in winter). A raincoat or poncho is better than an umbrella as some areas can be very windy.

What do I wear on Kangaroo Island?

Most activities on Kangaroo Island involve the great outdoors, so there's no need to dress up. In the evening, smart casual is the typical dress code for the island's restaurants — think t-shirt and jeans. Evenings can be chilly, even during the summer months, so ensure you bring a couple of warm layers.

What is the internet access like on Kangaroo Island?

Kangaroo Island ferries offer free Wi-Fi, and Telstra customers can get a signal in major tourist areas and along most of the island's sealed roads.

Limited or no Wi-Fi is available in some parts of the island, particularly when traveling off-road.

Non-Telstra customers will have little or no coverage throughout the island, but most hotels and resorts offer Wi-Fi access.

Can I use my mobile phone on Kangaroo Island?

Telstra customers usually have the best coverage on Kangaroo Island, particularly in more populated areas. If you're with another network provider you may have less or no coverage at all, however, most hotels offer free wi-fi so you can stay connected.

Has Kangaroo Island recovered from the 2020 bushfires?

The 2020 bushfires were the biggest in the island's history. The fires burnt almost half of the island and had a devastating impact on the people, homes, businesses, wildlife, nature and tourism.

As catastrophic as the fires were, Kangaroo Island and other bushfire-affected regions in South Australia are bouncing back. Nature is flourishing again and wildlife has returned to native habitats. Amazingly, some species that were thought to have been wiped out have been spotted, including the Kangaroo Island Little Pygmy Possum.

Tourism has suffered a great deal since the bushfires, but as the island continues to recover, it's more important than ever.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Arrival at Kangaroo Island

Arrival on Kangaroo Island by plane or ferry (own arrangements). After arrival on the island transfer to your hotel from the airport or harbour. Welcome to Kangaroo Island! This experience has been designed to showcase the best of Kangaroo Island – the lifestyle of the islanders, the produce, diverse landscapes and unique wildlife shaped by isolation. Your accommodation while on the island is the Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge, located in the quiet coastal town of American River.

Cygnet Park Habitat Restoration & Sea Lions

After an early breakfast, we head straight to Cygnet Park, a private conservation area that supports a biodiverse ecosystem. We meet with one of the ecologists from not-for-profit conservation group BioR to take part in bird banding as a means of research. This is a great opportunity to take a close look at some of Kangaroo Island’s bird life, including the endangered Kangaroo Island glossy black-cockatoo, which lost approximately half of its habitat in the 2020 bushfires. Break for morning tea while learning more about these large cockatoos – far more subdued than the typically rowdy birds. Next up is Stokes Bay, where we explore a beautiful hidden beach through a magical tunnel – a great adventure for all. Enjoy a barbecue lunch at a private bush camp featuring King George whiting, grilled haloumi, fresh salads and local wines. Continue to Seal Bay and take a private tour into an Australian sea lion colony – look out for pups nursing, young males practising their wrestling and big bulls staking out their territory – all only metres away on a beautiful sandy beach in an experience reminiscent of the Galapagos Islands. Return to Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge.

Flinders Chase National Park

After an early breakfast we travel to a private wildlife refuge, in the island’s north-west, which escaped the 2020 bushfires. We’ll check out wildlife surveys using daylight and infrared camera traps, targeting tiny endangered mammals and get an introduction to the bush. This provides important context for the fire ecology discussions later in the day. Break for an elegant picnic lunch in the bush, featuring marinated poached chicken, fresh salads, cheeses and boutique South Australian wine, beer, soft drinks and spring water. After lunch, travel into Flinders Chase National Park via the West End Highway, stopping to learn how the bush has adapted to fire. Explore south-west peninsula around Cape du Couedic, including the lighthouse precinct and our most iconic coastal landscapes. Explore the massive shapes of Remarkable Rocks, a natural sculpture perched impossibly on top of a granite dome emerging from the ocean. Evidence of the power of the Southern Ocean swell continues at Admirals Arch – a coastal grotto that provides a haul-out area for a large colony of long-nosed fur seals that swim effortlessly through the crashing waves. Upon arriving back at the lodge, enjoy dinner (at own arrangement).

Cape Gantheaume Coastal Hike

After breakfast at the hotel, we drive to the D’Estrees Bay region to meet with local entomologist, Dr Richard Glatz, who is currently working to save the endangered green carpenter bee. We drive further south to the spectacular coastline at Point Tinline, which features an osprey nest that was first sketched by a crew member of Osmanli, which was shipwrecked in 1853. This nest has been in regular use since then. Break for another elegant alfresco picnic lunch at a secluded clifftop location. Take a stunning coastal hike along the clifftops of Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park, with a range of wildlife opportunities, including spotting western whipbirds, shy heathwren, southern emu-wren and long-nosed fur seals. The marine lagoon at Wheatons Beach is always worth a look as international migrants like red-necked stints, ruddy turnstones and resident hooded plovers are regular seasonal encounters. Return to the Mercure Kangaroo Island Lodge for your final night.

Tour ends after breakfast transfer to the airport or transfer to the ferry at Penneshaw.

Terms and Conditions

Bookings are essential to avoid clashing tour times. Bookings in advance are preferred but can be made on the morning of the tour if there is staff availability.

Note: Encounters and animal interactions are subject to change with the season and availability on the day. Please inquire for further information at [email protected]

Park entry is included in the private tour cost. You can also visit the park on the day of your tour during our opening hours of 9.30am-5.00pm before or after your tour.

Please note that Koala holding will not be available during hot summer days and days of extreme weather. If booking during summer, early morning tours are recommended to ensure Koala holding will be able to take place. Our general height and age restrictions is 140cm or over 12 years. Even if the child cannot hold the koala themselves they can still touch and interact with them.  These restrictions are at our staffs discretion and can be judged on the day. Due to strict rotation protocol staff cannot guarantee which Koala will be out for any given session. There is a large difference between male and female Koalas and park staff need to be able to determine that the child is confident and willing to hold the Koala for that session of their own accord. The child will not be able to proceed if this cannot be determined.

All encounters are judged at the keepers discretion and may cease at any given time. All participants must follow all instructions given by the keeper and if they fail to do so may be removed from the tour and not issued a refund.

The Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park does not take responsibility for any injuries that are received during the tours.

Full Itinerary

With a diverse landscape, rainfall, and geology, Kangaroo Island is home to over 250 species of birds. This trip showcases the iconic landscapes through the lens of birdlife and targets some of the 17 Island subspecies. Highlights include exploring the Bay of Shoals Sanctuary Zone from the ocean and Cygnet Park, a significant rewilding project important for the Kangaroo Island Glossy-black Cockatoo. Expect encounters with many of the Island’s mammals and learn about the philosophy of shared space with nature. Local food and wine served at remote locations ensure you get a real taste of Kangaroo Island.

As this is a private tour, there are alternate activities which can be substituted, and we recommend setting up the priority activities in advance to ensure availability.

Begin your three-day birdwatching adventure with a short walk in the small coastal village of American River. Glossy Black-Cockatoos are frequent encounters in the bush, as are Grey Currawongs, Little Corellas, Galahs and Black-faced Cuckoo-shrikes. Along the shore, there are often Pied Oystercatchers, Royal Spoonbills, Black Swans, Grey Teal, Australian White Ibis, Australian Pelicans and Rufous Night Herons.

The Kingscote Oxidation Ponds usually produces a good cross-section of waterfowl, and the adjacent Cygnet River Estuary is always worth a look.

Have lunch at Reeves Point, which offers a chance to learn about the settlement history of the Island and often turns up quite a few birds – species vary with season.

After lunch, get out on the ocean with  Kangaroo Island Marine Adventures  and get a close look at Busby Islet. Here you can observe numerous birds from the boat, looking into colonies protected in a restricted conservation area. Opportunities include breeding Australian Pelicans, Royal spoonbills, Black-faced, Pied, Little Pied and Little Black Cormorants, Australian White Ibis and potentially international migratory species seasonally (Nov – Mar).

White-bellied Sea-eagles and Swamp Harriers constantly harass the nesting birds. This trip usually results in observing good numbers of Black Swans foraging on seagrass meadows, and chance encounters with Bottle-nosed Dolphins.

Start the day at Roper’s Gums – a tall Eucalyptus forest where you will learn about the endemic Glossy Black-cockatoo recovery plan and the private conservation efforts at Cygnet Park, where former pasture is now diverse bushland. After a morning tea break on the Cygnet River floodplain, set off for  Seal Bay Conservation Park .

During the drive to Seal Bay, look out for raptors. Possibilities include Wedge-tailed Eagles, Swamp Harriers, Australian Kestrels, Black-shouldered Kites, Collared Sparrowhawks, Brown Goshawks and Brown Falcons.

At Seal Bay, take a private guided Australian Sea-lion experience. Sea-lions share the beach with various bird species – often encountered are Caspian and Crested Terns, Sooty Oystercatchers and Hooded Plovers. Overhead sightings include White-bellied Sea-eagles and Eastern Ospreys. The headland to the west is a regular roost for Great and Pied Cormorants.

Next is Point Ellen, where seasonal encounters include Rock Parrots, Fairy Terns, and Little Penguins are sometimes found in burrows near the beacon. During morning tea, keep an ear out for Southern Emu-wrens, Purple-gaped Honeyeaters and Western Whipbirds in the coastal heath and adjacent mallee.

The expansive wilderness of  Flinders Chase National Park  is the focus for the rest of the day, starting in the Rocky River precinct.

Encounters here can include Cape Barren Geese, Crescent Honeyeaters, Little and Red Wattlebirds, Striated and Spotted Pardalotes, Australian Ravens, Koalas, Kangaroo Island Kangaroos, Short-beaked Echidnas, Rosenberg’s Goanna (seasonal) and Tammar Wallabies.

Visit the iconic  Remarkable Rocks , a spectacular natural clifftop sculpture. Break for a picnic with binoculars close by – looking out for Australian Kestrels, Tawny-crowned Honeyeaters, and another chance to try for Southern Emu-wrens and the elusive White-bellied Whipbird.

Nearby is  Admiral’s Arch  – a sea cave which often turns up Australian Ravens (surprisingly), Sooty Oystercatchers, Crested Terns (which had Antarctic terns amongst them in 2006 and 2007), Pacific Gulls and a large Long-nosed Fur-seal colony. If a south-westerly wind is blowing, there is a chance to see pelagic species here as well.

Duck Lagoon is a freshwater billabong where typical encounters include: White-eared, White-naped and Brown-headed Honeyeaters; Crimson Rosellas; Superb Fairy-wrens; Black Swans; Grey and Chestnut Teal; Yellow-billed Spoonbills; Pacific Black Duck; Australasian and Hoary-headed Grebes; Chestnut-breasted Shelducks; Little Pied Cormorants; and (seasonally) Freckled Ducks.

After morning tea, venture to the north coast of the Island. Explore Lathami Conservation Park, which protects the habitat of the Glossy Black-cockatoo. Regular encounters are Kangaroo Island Kangaroos; Tammar Wallabies; Scarlet Robins; Striated and Brown Thornbills; Grey Shrike-thrush; Short-beaked Echidnas; Golden Whistlers; and Beautiful Firetails.

At nearby  Stokes Bay , seek out Australian Pelicans; Eastern Reef Herons, Hooded plovers and White-bellied Sea-eagles.

Travel inland to a private lunch site where your guide will prepare a seafood barbeque lunch. This area is home to Koalas, Crescent and New Holland Honeyeaters, Eastern Spinebills, Grey Fantails, Rainbow and Purple-crowned Lorikeets, Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos, and a selection of smaller bush birds.

Continue exploring at D’Estrees Bay (Hooded Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones (seasonally), Eastern Osprey, Rock Parrots (seasonally) and a look at one of the MacGillivray Wetlands on the way back to the airport.

  • Three days private touring on Kangaroo Island
  • Home-baked traditional Australian treats with a selection of hot beverages
