How to Search for Text Within a Web Page in Safari

Don't sift through long web pages. Find specific words or phrases on a web page faster with these shortcuts for Safari on the Mac and iOS .

How to Find Text Within a Page in OS X

The Command+F keyboard shortcut for Find could be the biggest timesaving shortcut you'll ever learn. With it, you can jump to sections containing a certain word or phrase. It also works in most programs or apps, so you can use it not just for Safari, but with Word or Notes as well.

1. Press Command+F to bring up the in-page search box. Alternatively, you can go to the Edit menu > Find > Find… to bring up the search box.

2. Type in your search word or phrase and hit Enter. Safari will highlight all of the instances of the word on the page.

3. Click the left and right arrow buttons to scroll through the search results.

4. Important: If you want to broaden the search results, click the menu within the search box to switch between "Contains" and "Starts With."

So, for example, if your search string is "light", Safari by default will search for all words that begin with "light": lighthouse, lightbulb, and so on. Switch the option to "Contains" and Safari will also find words like spotlight and sunlight.

How to Find Text Within a Page in iOS

Being able to jump to a word is especially helpful on small mobile screens or tablets.

1. Tap the share button on the page you want to search.

2. Scroll to the right in the bottom menu and tap "Find on Page."

3. Type in your search word or phrase. As you type, Safari will start highlighting search matches.

On iPhone and iPad , the way you search within a webpage in Safari isn't so obvious. There are two different methods you can use in Apple's browser, both of which are described below. Once you've given them a shot, they'll become second nature.

How to Search Within a Webpage Using Safari's Smart Search Bar

Launch Safari browser on your ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌
Navigate to the page that you want to search.

Scroll down the Smart Search results for the section called On This Page . Alongside it you'll see the number of matches for your search term. Tap the Find [your search term] option below it.
Safari will jump to the first instance of the word or phrase you search for on the webpage and highlight it in yellow. You will also see the matching result above the onscreen keyboard. Use the up/down arrow buttons to jump to each successive instance of your search term on the current page.

How to Search Within a Webpage Using Safari's Share Sheet

Launch Safari browser on your ‌iPhone‌ or ‌iPad‌.

Scroll past the Share options to the Action menu and select Find on Page .
Type the word or phrase you're looking for in the search field and tap Search . Safari will jump to the first instance of your search term on the webpage and highlight it in yellow. You will also see the matching result above the onscreen keyboard. Use the up/down arrow buttons to jump to each successive instance of your search term on the current page.

Are you looking for a quick and easy way to find a specific word or phrase on a page while using your Mac? Look no further than the Find on Page tool! This helpful feature is available in the Safari browser, as well as other popular browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

The Find on Page tool allows users to quickly search through websites, documents, emails, and more for specific words or phrases. It’s especially useful for long documents where it would be difficult to manually scan the text.

To use the Find on Page tool in Safari, simply tap the Share icon (the square with an arrow pointing out) at the bottom of the screen. Scroll past the Share options to the Action menu and select Find on Page. Then type your desired word or phrase into the search field and tap Search. You’ll then be presented with all of the locations that match your query.

If you’re using Chrome or Firefox, you can access this tool by pressing Command-F (or Command-G if you’d like to find multiple occurrences of a term). After pressing tose keys, a small search box will appear in which you can enter your query. You’ll then see highlighted matches of your word or phrase throughout the page.

Finding Text on a Mac

To search on a page in Safari on a MacBook, you can use the Smart Search field at the top of the Safari window. To begin your search, type a word or phrase into the search bar and then press Return. As you type, Safari will offer Suggestions based on what you’ve typed. You can select one of tese suggestions to instantly go to a webpage related to your query, or press Return to perform a regular web search using your selected search engine. Additionally, you can use keyboard shortcuts like Command-F to open the Find On Page window and quickly locate text within the current webpage.

Searching for a Word on a Page in Safari

To search for a word or phrase on a page in Safari, first navigate to the page you want to search. Once you’re there, tap the Share icon (the square with an arrow pointing out) at the bottom of the screen. Scroll past the Share options and select Find on Page from the Action menu. Type the word or phrase you’re looking for in the search field and tap Search. This will search the current page and highlight all occurrences of your search term.

Finding Text on a Mac Using the Control Key

How to search website content from within Safari

You can quickly find all occurrences of a search term on the current web page

So Google has just returned a list of websites, and underneath the top one you can see precisely the information you want. Or rather, you can see the start of it and have to click to get to the page to find the rest.

But then you're on the page and for the life of you, you simply cannot find the same text that Google just showed you on the results page. Unfortunately, one possibility is that it isn't there — Google may have shown you a cache of an older version of the page.

Even when it is there, though, it can be hard to spot because of the design of the page or because of the sheer tonnage of text to scroll through. That's where the simplest and probably most overlooked Safari feature comes in.

As it happens, it's mostly overlooked on the Mac . If there were an iOS feature we'd appreciate seeing borrowed by macOS , it would be On This Page .

Using On This Page on iOS

Go to any site in Safari on iPhone or iPad
Tap in the address bar as if you were about to go somewhere else
Type a search term, but do not press Enter
Swipe up from about midway down the screen to dismiss the keyboard
Scroll down to the On This Page heading

If the search term you're looking for is anywhere on that site's current page, it will be listed along with how many times it's there. If it isn't on the page, the heading changes to On This Page (no matches) , and you know to move on with your life.

How to search through the results on iOS

When there are one or more occurrences of your search term, you can tap on the line under the heading to go to the first of them. If you searched for the word "banana," for instance, that line will read Find "bananas" and you can just tap on it.

Tapping this find line dismisses all the other search results, such as Bookmarks, and displays the page unfettered by anything but the title bar — and a new search bar. Plus the page will have been scrolled to where the first occurrence is.

What's more, that first occurrence will be highlighted in yellow. Whether it's the only one or there are many, though, there's a bar at the foot of the screen giving you quick access to any others.

Left to right, this bottom bar begins with a Done button for when you're finished. It then shows a magnifying glass, your search term, and a count of how many occurrences you've looked at.

Then there are also up and down arrows to step you through each occurrence. Each time you tap on an arrow, the page jumps to the next spot where your search term is, and again highlights it in yellow.

It's fast and simple, but it gets missed because On This Page is usually hidden by the on-screen keyboard. Then when you're using it, it's spectacularly easy to tap in just the wrong place and dismiss the entire search.

To be fair, the Mac's equivalent doesn't go away quite so readily. It's just otherwise exactly the same functionality — in a completely different place.

How to search within a site on the Mac

In Safari on your Mac, go to a website
Click Command-F , or
Choose Edit , Find , Find... from the menus
Type in a search term

On the Mac, the moment you've typed something that can be found on the page, the Mac highlights it immediately. It doesn't wait.

It highlights the first occurrence in yellow — and all other occurrences in white. So you can scroll and see where they all are, or you can read the first and step through the rest one by one.

To step through, you use the arrow buttons on the search bar that you've just entered text into. Where the iPhone has those as up and down arrows, the Mac has them as left and right.

One oddity is that sometimes, depending on the website, Safari can get confused over which is the "first" occurrence of a search term. It will always highlight them all, but it can jump first to one that's toward the end of the page.

Reading many search results

Since you are so clearly shown where each search result is, it would be great to be able to tab through them, but you can't. Either you click the tiny arrows, or you scroll the page and read the white labels.

As soon as you click on any one of those labels, it and all others vanish immediately. So if, say, you want to select and copy multiple sections of the website page, you will have to repeat the search over and over.

The search bar remains on screen — in the current tab, not any of the others — so repeating the search means clicking back in it. The search term you typed will be highlighted, ready for you to replace it with something else, but you can just hit Return and Safari will re-highlight all the results.

Where the Mac wins

The Mac does react when you click in the address bar and it does offer you options, they just don't include the On This Page feature. It would be great if it did, or if you could set it so that you saw search results as well as Favorites, or Frequently Visited, pages.

However, the Mac version of in-Safari searches does offer one more feature than the iOS one. On iOS, Safari shows you all occurrences of whatever you look for, wherever it is on the page — even if it's within another word.

On the Mac, the same thing is the default, but you can change it at any time. Right next to where you type the search term, there's a drop down menu. It defaults to Contains , but you can change it to Begins with .

Searching on Safari

It's not as if there is an incredibly powerful regex-style search feature in Safari on either iOS or macOS. But the search feature is as simple as it is obscure.

Once you know it's there, you will find yourself using it repeatedly. Although speaking of which, it would be handy to have a Unix- or Terminal-style ability to tap a key and be searching for the previous item you looked for, or the one before that, or before that.

How to search in a page or website in Mobile Safari

Ever since iOS 9, iOS has had a dedicated share extension to search the current web page in Safari. You just hit the sharing arrow , then choose Find in Page on the bottom row of options, and then you can type in your query. It works, and it works well, but it’s a very clunky method for doing something that requires a single keystroke (Command-F) on the Mac.

Today we’ll look at some alternatives for finding text in a web page on iOS, along with a bonus tip for site-wide searches.

Safari’s built-in page search

Mobile Safari has two ways to get to the same page search. I mentioned one above, and it’s the most obvious. It is also the most annoying to use, as you have to tap around finding the correct share-sheet item to invoke.

Another way to access Mobile Safari’s find-in-page feature is to just type your search term into the URL bar, as if you were about to visit another web page, or do a Duck Duck Go search. As you type, Safari will do its usual auto-complete business, but what you may never have noticed is that, at the bottom of the list, there’s a section called On This Page . Here, if Safari has found your search term in the current page, the number of results will be displayed. Tap this result and you’ll be taken to the same search-results view as if you had used the awkward share-sheet version.

From here, tap the tiny arrows in the search bar to page through the results. You can also tap the Done button when you’re done.

Search in a Mobile Safari page with the keyboard

The very best way to search in a Mobile Safari page is to use an attached keyboard. Just hit Command-F like you would on a Mac, and type in your search. This uses the exact same search interface as the non-keyboard method, but it’s way faster to access. Once you have accused the search, you can use the Mac’s Command-G shortcut to jump to the next occurrence of your search term in the page, and Shift-Command-G to jump backwards through the results.

A neat old-school way to search in a page

Safari’s built-in find-in-page tools are great, but they lag behind the Mac in one crucial way. On the Mac, the whole page is dimmed, and every instance of your search term is highlighted. Using Command-G to page through the results highlights each in turn, with your chosen system highlight color.

Mobile Safari, on the other hand, highlights only the currently-selected instance of your results. But we can fix that by repurposing an old bookmarklet that was written back before Mobile Safari even had a find-in-page function.

This bookmarklet was designed to add a page search to Safari for iPhone. It works by simply highlighting every occurrence of your search term in yellow. To use this bookmarklet, just visit this iMore page from 2012 and drag it to the bookmarks bar on your Mac. That will make it sync to your iPhone and/or iPad. If you don’t use a Mac, then you can do it the hard way .

The other big advantage of this method is that it is easy to use on iOS without tapping into the share menu. You just tap the bookmarklet in Safari’s bookmarks bar, and a box pops up ready for your to type your search term. It’s way better than the built-in method, which shows Apple at its worst, interface-wise: Functions are hidden to make the design appear simpler, but end up making it much more complex.

Site searches

Did you ever get forced to complete a captcha just to perform a search on your favorite internet forum? No more! Here we have a bonus bookmarklet that works like the one above, only it searches the current site, not just the current page. Just tap (or click — it works on Mac too) the bookmark, type your search term, and you’ll be redirected to a site-specific Google search. I use this bookmarklet many times a day. If I remember correctly, I found the bookmarklet here, on CtrlQ.org , amongst several other useful bookmarklets.

Now, the power users amongst you probably already know a few of these tips, especially the built-in features, but you can bet that you have at least a few friends or family members who are frustrated trying to do these searches. “Find on page” not working since IOS 16 update

I am trying to use find on page in a document that is opened in safari. This used to work. I can search web pages fine, just not pdf documents. Anyone else?

Troubleshooting, how to view page source in safari on mac.

Viewing a web pages source code in Safari, and other web browsers, is a fairly routine activity for many people who work with the web for a living or even as a hobby. Unlike some other browsers, to view page source in Safari you must first enable a developer toolset for the browser to be able to access the view web page source feature.

This tutorial will demonstrate how to view a web pages source in Safari on Mac OS. This applies to all versions of Safari and MacOS.

How to View Page Source in Safari for Mac

Here is how you can view a web pages source in Safari on MacOS:

First, enable the Safari Develop menu by going to the Safari menu, choosing “Preferences”, going to “Advanced” and checking the box to enable the developer menu

Next, in any Safari window, navigate to the web page whose source you wish to view and inspect
Pull down the “Develop” menu at the top of the screen and select “Show Page Source” from the menu options

Aside from viewing page source, you can also use the Develop menu to accomplish many other web useful tricks and developer tasks, including disabling Javascript and clearing Safari cache amongst myriad other functions and capabilities that are geared towards advanced users and developers, like finding embedded files in pages .

How to View Page Source by Keyboard Shortcut in Safari on Mac

After you have the Develop menu enabled in Safari, you can also use a keyboard shortcut to quickly view any web page source in the Safari browser for Mac:

Navigate to the web page you wish to view the page source for
Press Command + Option + U keyboard combination to view the page source

The keyboard shortcut for viewing page source will open the web inspector tool, just like accessing it from the Develop menu.

If you’re an advanced user of Safari, enabling the Develop menu is likely one of the first things you do when you launch the browser for the first time.

For what it’s worth, the Chrome browser and Firefox browsers also have similar web element inspector capabilities, but obviously we’re focusing on Safari for Mac here.

The Developer functions in Safari for Mac are not available for iPhone or iPad (yet anyway), but if you’re interested in gaining source viewing options on the mobile side you can use this javascript trick to view page source in iOS and ipadOS versions of Safari.

This article explains how to use the Find on Page function in Safari on the iPhone to search for the text you're looking for on a mobile web page. We include instructions for iOS 14 through iOS 4 .

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 14 and 13

If you have an iPhone or other iOS device with iOS 14 or 13, follow these steps to use Safari Find on Page:

Begin by opening Safari and browsing to a website.

Tap the action box at the bottom center of the screen (the box with the arrow coming out of it).

Swipe up on the pop-up sheet.

Tap Find on Page .

In the search bar, type the text you want to find.

If the text you entered is on the page, the first use of it is highlighted.
Use the arrow keys above the keyboard to move forward and backward through every instance of your search term on the page.

Tap the X in the search bar to search for a new word or phrase.

Tap Done when you're finished.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 9 - iOS 12

For an iPhone or other iOS device running iOS 9 through iOS 12, follow these steps:

Open Safari and browse to a website.

Swipe through the second row of icons. Tap Find on Page .

Type the text you want to find in the search bar.

If the text you searched for is found, its first use is highlighted.

Use the arrow keys next to the search box to move through every use of the search term on the page.

Tap the X in the search bar to enter a new word or phrase.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 7 and 8

The following steps work are the only way to use Safari's Find on Page feature on iOS 7 and 8 :

Begin by opening the Safari app and browsing to a website

Once the site is loaded in Safari, tap the address bar at the top of the Safari window.

In that address bar, type the text you want to search for on the page.

When you do that, a number of things happen:

In the address bar, URLs may be suggested based on your browsing history .
Beneath that, the Top Hits section offers additional suggestions.
The Suggested Website is delivered by Apple based on your Safari settings (you can tweak these in Settings > Safari > Search ).
After that are a set of suggested searches from Google (or your default search engine), followed by matching sites from your bookmarks and search history.

But where's Find on Page? In most cases, it's hidden off the bottom of the screen, either by the onscreen keyboard or by the list of suggested results and searches. Swipe all the way to the end of the screen and you'll see a section titled On This Page . The number next to the header indicates how many times the text you searched for appears on this page.

Tap Find to see all uses of your search word on the page.

The arrow keys move you through the uses of the word on the page. The X icon lets you clear the current search and perform a new one.

Tap Done when you're finished searching.

How to Use Safari Find on Page in iOS 4-6

In these earlier versions of the iOS, the process is a bit different:

Use Safari to browse to a website.

Tap the search bar in the top right-hand corner of the Safari window (if Google is your default search engine, the window will read Google until you tap it).

Type in the text you're trying to find on the page.

In the list of search results, you'll first see suggested search terms from Google. In a grouping below that, you'll see On This Page . Tap that to find the text you want on the page.

You'll see the text you searched for highlighted on the page. Move between instances of the text you searched for with the Previous and Next buttons.

When visiting a web page in the Safari app, select the Share button (it looks like a square with an upward-facing arrow in it). Scroll through the Share menu and select Find on Page, then type in the word or phrase you want to search for and select Search .

Navigate to the web page in the Chrome app and select More ... > Find in Page . Enter your search word or phrase in the text field in the top-left, and Chrome will highlight matching words or phrases in yellow on the web page.

This is how you Inspect Element on Safari for macOS

When you know how to Inspect Element on Safari for Mac, you can delve into the HTML and CSS code of a web page, to see how it's really functioning behind the scenes or to make changes to how the site looks or functions (these are only temporary and the changes will be discarded after you close your browser).

If you're on a website you've built, you can use Inspect Element to debug issues with a page's front end.

Chrome and Firefox users will be used to simply right clicking on a page element and then selecting Inspect Element. However, with Safari the Inspect Element feature is not enabled by default, so you may be scratching your head about where to find it, especially if you're unfamiliar with Apple's browser. To enable Inspect Element, you first have to switch on Safari's Developer Menu.

If you aren't sure how, fear not, as this guide will show you exactly how to Inspect Element on Safari. All you need to do is read on.

In Safari, click Safari in the tool bar
Click Settings and head to Advanced
Check Show Develop menu in menu bar
On a webpage, right click an element
Click Inspect Element

How to change the safari home page on a mac.

Tired of opening Safari and seeing Favorites? Here's how to set your homepage to your favorite website in Safari on Mac.

Traditionally, a homepage is the first website your browser loads when you start it. But by default, Safari on Mac opens up a window of Favorites instead. If you'd like Safari to start with a website of your choice, follow these simple steps.

First, open the Safari web browser by clicking its icon in the dock, by using Spotlight Search , or by selecting it from the macOS Applications folder . From there, navigate to the page you'd like to use as your home page. It can be any website you want.

In the menu bar at the top of the screen, select Safari > Preferences.

In Preferences > General, click the "Set to Current Page" button. This changes your home page to the current website Safari has open.

After clicking the button, the address in the "Homepage" field will change to the address of the current page.

Next, we'll make it so you see your home page when you open Safari. In Preferences > General, click the drop-down menu beside the "New Windows Open With" listing.

In the drop-down menu, select the "Homepage" option.

If desired, you can repeat the same step with the "New Tabs Open With" option. In that case, every time you open a new tab, you'll see your home page.

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Communication: Excellent. Answered promptly before tour. During tour, we were kept very well informed. Itinerary: Very good. Please take all the optional tours. Dendera Temple was our favorite. Do not miss it. Please add on or do Old Cairo tour. Guides: Anas was great ! Cruise: Was ok. Boat was old. In fact, all other boats we passed through looked better than ours. No entertainment on board except for 15 min of Tanoura dance - which was great. Belly dance was a joke! No consistent wifi. Only one English channel on the TV. A book would have been great - so get one or two to read. Food on the cruise - very few vegetarian options. Hotels: They were ok. More like 3-4 star. Definitely not 5 star. Drivers: All of them were good, on time. Cars/Vans were clean. Tipping system: were told to pay $8 per person per day in advance. This was supposed to cover everything except tips for guides. But everywhere, we went the people on cruise, horse carriage, porters - expected tips from us. On hindsight, I would not pay that optional tip upfront. For 4 of us it was $256. I am sure all the poor people who helped us would have gotten more and we would have spent less, if we did not pay the tip upfront! There is room for improvement but it was well organized trip. They are reliable company.

Pickup from your location (Hotel / Nile Cruise Boat) at Aswan in the afternoon to be transferred in an air conditioned vehicle to Abu Simbel and check in overnight at the Hotel. Once checked in you will have time to relax for a few hours before being transferred and escorted by a Guide in the evening to see the renowned Sound and Light Show at Abu Simbel Temples, considered the best Sound and Light Show in Egypt. Once it has finished, you will be transferred back to your Hotel for a comfortable night’s stay.

An early start after breakfast, then you will be transferred with an expert Tour Guide to enable you to see the Temples at Abu Simbel in their glory with the sun rising in their unique style and considered to be the masterpieces of ancient Egypt reflecting the glory and grandeur of the New Kingdom. The Egyptian Government and UNESCO decided to co-operate in order to save these Temples from the floods during the period of reconstruction when the High Dam was built. The Temple of Ramses II (also called The Sun Temple), was dedicated to the four universal Gods Ptah, Re-Her-Akhtey, Amun-Ra, and to Ramses II himself. The Temple of Queen Nefertari dedicated to the wife of the Sun Goddess Hathor. How to reinstall macOS

You can use macOS Recovery to reinstall the Mac operating system (macOS). Reinstalling macOS doesn't remove your apps or personal data.

Shut down your Mac

From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose Shut Down.

If you can't shut down, press and hold the power button on your Mac for up to 10 seconds, until it turns off. (Every Mac has a power button. On notebook computers that have Touch ID, press and hold Touch ID.)

Start up from macOS Recovery

Follow the appropriate steps, based on whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon . If you're not sure, you can try both sets of steps.

If you're using a Mac with Apple silicon

When using a Mac with Apple silicon, Recovery installs the current version of the most recently installed macOS.

Press and hold the power button on your Mac.

As you continue to hold the power button, your Mac turns on and loads startup options. When you see Options, release the power button.

Click Options, then click the Continue button that appears below it.

If you're asked to select a user you know the password for, select the user. Then click Next and enter that user's administrator password, which is the password they use to log in to the Mac. Forgot your password?

If you're using any other Mac

If you're not using a Mac with Apple silicon, you're using an Intel-based Mac.

Press and release the power button to turn on your Mac.

Immediately after releasing the power button, press and hold one of these key combinations. If none of them work, review the guidelines for using startup-key combinations .

Command-R: When you press and hold these two keys at startup, Recovery will offer the current version of the most recently installed macOS.

Option-Command-R: When you press and hold these three keys at startup, Recovery might offer the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.

Shift-Option-Command-R: When you press and hold these four keys at startup, Recovery might offer the macOS that came with your Mac, or the closest version still available.

Keep holding the keys until you see an Apple logo or spinning globe.

Reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery

When you see a window with the option to reinstall macOS, your Mac has started up from Recovery.

Select the option to reinstall macOS.

Click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.

If the installer asks to unlock your disk, enter the password that you use to log in to your Mac.

If the installer offers the choice between installing on Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD - Data, choose Macintosh HD.

If the installer doesn't see your disk, you might need to erase your disk first.

If the installer can't install successfully on your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk first. Or try one of the other ways to install macOS .

Allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart and show a progress bar several times, and the screen might be empty for minutes at a time.

When installation is complete, your Mac might start up to a setup assistant. Follow the steps in the setup assistant.

If you're selling, trading in, or giving away your Mac , quit the setup assistant without completing setup, then click Shut Down. When the new owner starts up the Mac, they can use their own information to complete setup.

If you just erased your startup disk , Recovery might offer an earlier compatible version of macOS, but you can upgrade macOS after installation is complete. If your computer's logic board was just replaced during service, Recovery might offer the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.
