Hastings Green Festival, West Sussex

Two points of interest dominate the character of the bustling East Sussex town of Hastings – the sea and 1066. One of the medieval Cinque Ports, Hastings has long had a close relationship with the ocean, and although its fishing industry has declined, it still has Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet.

As for the Norman Conquests, Hastings is not the actual location of the famous battle in 1066. That exact spot is just a few miles down the road at Battle Abbey.

However, its legacy still colours the entire town. The remains of William the Conqueror's first English castle still stand today, though centuries of warfare and erosion have taken their toll.

Today the town offers a range of attractions for the short break visitor looking for what to do in Hastings. From Britain's steepest funicular, to the meandering alleyways of the Old Town, it's a great place to explore for a few days.

Things to do in Hastings

  • Hastings Museum and Art Gallery  is one of the town’s hidden gems and houses the collection of the Brassey family, donated to the museum by Lord Brassey and his family, along with the magnificent Durbar Hall, constructed for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition held in South Kensington in 1886.  John Logie Baird was living in Hastings when he invented the television and a collection of his artefacts are on display from time to time at the museum. A family-friendly museum and art gallery, there are many events and workshops held here for all ages and interests.
  • Hastings Contemporary is sensitively and intuitively designed by HAT Projects to complement the surrounding environment, sitting amongst Hastings’s famous net huts, overlooking the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe, the gallery a reputation for its focus on painting and on Modern British art.  Look out for one of seven new artworks outside the gallery, that link the Sussex, Kent and Essex coast.  The other artwork in this area can be found outside De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill.
  • A symbol of the unique charm and character of Hastings, a trip on the East Cliff or West Cliff  railway is a must on a visit a Hastings.  Visit Hastings Castle or  Hastings Country Park – an area of outstanding natural beauty and site of special scientific interest.
  • Watch the small inshore boats as they come into shore, fisherman have landed their catch at The Stade for over 1000 years.  There are many quality eateries in Hastings, look out for the Hastings Fish logo to know you’re eating local!
  • Find out about the area’s links to 18th century smuggling at the Smugglers Adventure at St Clements Caves  or the sea at the  Shipwreck Museum  for tales of souls lost at sea. Enjoy an underwater adventure at  Hastings Aquarium  which has recently undergone a three month refurbishment.
  • Looking for something a little different, then make a stop at the True Crime Museum, set in 3,000 sq/ft of seafront caves, it is the largest collection of crime memorabilia in the UK.

Things to do surrounding Hastings

  • The town of Rye is a 20 minute drive or train journey from Hastings and is reputed to be the best preserved medieval town in the UK. The cobbled streets of Rye citadel is a photographer or artist’s dream and the Rye town model and story of Rye is a great introduction to your visit to the town. Winchelsea is a precious gem of a town, built on a hill just five minutes journey outside Rye, and has the third largest network of medieval wine cellars in England, as well as the beautiful St Thomas the Martyr church and monastery ruins. C J Sampson based his fictional town of Shinglesea in the novel ‘Dissolution’ on the town of Winchelsea. In the other direction a five minute drive or bus journey takes you to the 7 mile stretch of dunes at Camber Sands, East Sussex’s biggest sandy beach and a dream for kite surfers, kite buggiers or sand castle builders.
  • Bexhill is just a short cycle ride or bracing seafront stroll from Hastings as far as elegant Bexhill, the birthplace of British motor racing. Bexhill Museum offers something for everyone from local history and archaeology to fashion and Bexhill’s motor heritage. Also don't miss a visit to the De La Warr Pavilion  that sits just above the promenade on the seafront in Bexhill.
  • Visit the nearby town of Battle and see the site of the famous 1066 Battle of Hastings at Battle Abbey .
  • Spread your wings a little further and discover the beautiful Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest for the chance to walk, explore and enjoy the fresh air (18 miles away), or visit the picture perfect castle and Observatory and Science Centre at Herstmonceux (15 miles away)
  • Pavensey  is the landing place of William of Normandy and his troops before the Battle of Hastings. It also marks the start of the 1066 Country Walk.

Hastings also boasts a lively (and growing) arts scene. Every year their is an extensive program of events - see Whats on in Sussex , including Jack in the Green (May Bank Holiday), Pirates Day (July), Hastings Old Town Carnival Week (August), Coastal Current art festival (September) bringing together a stunning variety of works and performances, Hastings Week (Oct) finishing with the Hastings Bonfire Torchlight Procession, along with for food and wine lovers there's the annual food and wine festival (Sept 21).

The innovative, creative side to Hastings comes out in unexpected places. The seafront is now decorated with several impressive light displays – including the wonderful Sticks of Rock!

  • Information

The respectable seaside resort of Hastings is one of the original Cinque Ports (a pre Tudor navy defence) that once guarded our shores.

Hasting Sea Front

The town provides all the usual paraphernalia of the seaside, yet still retains much of its original character. A two-tier promenade separates a busy road from the wide shingle beach, fronted by shops and hotels. Seaside entertainment ranges from concert orchestras and brass bands to Punch and Judy. There is also a small amusement park to keep the kids happy. Sea trips are available from the harbour arm, and row boats can be hired in the summer at the boating lake. There is also an indoor and outdoor swimming pool.

Most people connect the town with the Battle of Hastings (1066). The invading army did land on these shores but the battle itself took place some 6 miles inland, in a field near the town of Battle . William's arrival is commemorated by the Conqueror's Stone - located on the shore near the pier. It is said to have been used as a table where he enjoyed his first meal in England. In 1966 the Royal School of needlework created a 243 foot-long tapestry, depicting 81 major events in British history since 1066. It is currently displayed in the Town Hall, Queen's Road.

The Norman army fortified Hastings with a castle, not long after the battle. All that remains today is part of the curtain wall, a gatehouse, tower and dungeons. Near to the castle are St Clement's Caves, one of the most extensive cave systems in south-east England - believed to have been once used as a smugglers' lair. Both attractions are open to the public.

Hastings old town lies between Castle Hill and East Cliff. Its twisting narrow streets are packed with a mixture of houses from medieval to Victorian. Some very fine 16th and 17th-c houses surround the village green. The Queen's Head, dating from the 15th-c, is one the town's many fine old inns. Churches include the 14th-c St Clement's, the 15th-c Church of All Saints and the Roman Catholic church of St Mary Star-of-the-Sea (1880-3).

The local fishing industry still thrives here, despite the silting up of the harbour. Boats are winched up onto the shingle beach when not at sea. The tall wooden net drying huts on the shore are a reminder of this past way of life. The Fishermen's Museum, originally a chapel (circa 1854), houses an interesting collection of photographs, documents and mementos of this traditional livelihood.

Hasting Sea Front

The old Victorian pier (circa 1872) was fully restored in 2015. Access to the pier is free. It has no amusement arcades but there are a number of refreshments outlets. To the east of the town lies Hastings Country Park, with 520 acres of woodland, glens, nature trails and cliff top walks.

Places of Interest to Visit in Hastings

Fishermen's museum.

Hastings old boats

Opened in 1956 in a small fishermen's church. It has a range of maritime exhibits, photographs, pictures, model boats and other interesting objects concerning the fishing and maritime history of Hastings. Run by the Old Hastings Preservation Society. A key exhibit is the town's last sailing lugger, the Enterprise, built in 1912.

Hastings is a seaside town in East Sussex in southeast England. It's frankly run down but has budget accommodation and several sites of interest. In 2022 the population was 92,340.

Understand [ edit ]

tourist map of hastings

Hastings is most famous for the battle that took place there in 1066 between King Harold's English and William the Conqueror's Normans. The town lent its name to the battle, although the battle took place in nearby Battle (these were imaginative times....). The Normans made Hastings one of the Cinque Ports responsible for England's maritime defence, but in the late Middle Ages its harbour was swept away by the sea.

The town grew from its medieval origins into a Victorian seaside resort, and the majority of the towns architecture dates from this period. Today, along with St Leonards on Sea, Hastings forms a fairly large urban area on the south coast of around 100,000 inhabitants.

Nestled between the rugged beauty of the East and West Hills, the town's main attraction is the medieval Old Town, with its narrow passageways, antique shops, boutiques, cafe's and Europe's largest beach-launched fishing fleet. The town also boasts a hill-top castle, two funicular railways, the Georgian church of St Mary in the Castle, 18th-century net shops, and access to Hastings Country Park - a 660 acres (270 hectares) Nature Reserve with woodland glens, beaches and cliff-top views.

Away from the Old Town, Hastings largely retains the character of a Victorian seaside resort, with seafront squares, grand Victorian facades, elegant parks and a pier. However, the town suffered from the post-war decline in the seaside tourist industry in England and while there has been significant investment in regenerating the area, parts of the seafront have seen better days.

Historic Net Shops & The Stade

A row of "net shops," the traditional tall sheds or "lofts" used by fishermen to store their nets and prevent their rotting, has been perfectly preserved in the Old Town of Hastings.

Standing as tall as three stories, these well-preserved historic buildings are testament to the town's long history as a fishing port.

Net shops in the Old Town of Hastings

Remarkably, some 39 of these unique wooden structures survive as listed buildings on the "Stade," the Old Town's shingle beach, where some of them have stood for centuries. And you can't miss them. Notable for the black tar painted on their exteriors as weatherproofing, a process known as weatherboarding that is common throughout East Sussex, they're a must-visit photo op in Hastings.

Address: The Stade, Rock-a-Nore Road, Hastings

Hastings Old Town

Old Town Hastings was made famous by the excellent Foyle's War TV show, a war-time crime drama set in Hastings. Fans of this hit show will recognize many of the town's landmarks, including the fictional detective's home on Croft Road.

It's a delightful town to explore on foot. Located below Hastings Castle, the elegant curving buildings along Pelham Crescent are in the heart of this historic area and were constructed between 1824 and 1828.

Old Town

Other architectural highlights include the many half-timbered houses standing in Hastings' narrow High Street and in All Saints Street, with its pretty church of the same name. It's also where you'll find the Stade, one of the best beaches in Sussex and a pleasant place for a spot of sunbathing or a picnic.

Hastings Fishermen's Museum

While exploring the Stade area and its Net Shops, be sure to also visit the Fisherman's Church of St. Nicholas in Rock-a-Nore Road. Built in 1854 to serve the fishing community, this charming building now houses the Hastings Fishermen's Museum .

The museum itself opened in 1954 and is well worth a look for its fascinating displays relating to the town's maritime history, along with numerous photographs from the 1800s. A highlight is the inclusion of a "lugger" boat, the Enterprise , and models and exhibits portraying the development of the local fishing industry. A gift shop is also located on-site, and admission is free.

Address: Rock-a-Nore Road, Hastings, East Sussex

Hastings Castle

The remains of Hastings Castle , the first fortification to be built after William the Conqueror's invasion in 1066, can be easily explored. Perched atop the town's West Hill, it's a fun tourist attraction to get to via the town's second funicular railway, The West Hill Cliff Railway.

In its almost 1,000-year history, this formidable fortress has withstood violent weather and coastal erosion, with large portions of the castle having fallen into the sea over the centuries. It has also endured numerous sieges and even bombing during WWII.

Hastings Castle

These days, the castle is popular for its still intact "whispering dungeon" and its many displays recounting the incredible events that have taken place in and around it. The castle and its grounds are open to the public from March to October.

Address: Castle Hill Road, Hastings, East Sussex

1066 Battle of Hastings, Abbey and Battlefield

The delightful little market town of Battle, located just six miles north of Hastings, is well worth exploring for its role in the Battle of Hastings of 1066. To commemorate his victory and in atonement for the bloodshed, William the Conqueror built an abbey on the spot where his rival, King Harold of England, fell. The 223-foot Benedictine abbey church, consecrated in 1094, was later demolished during Henry VIII's rule.

The home built on the ruins eventually became a girls' school, and the tomb of Sir Anthony Browne, the man responsible for tearing it down, can be seen in nearby St. Mary's church. The gatehouse, completed in 1339, and the ruins of the monks' dormitory, dating from 1120, remain particularly impressive.

Abbey on the Battle of Hastings Battlefield

Today, an excellent visitor center contains many fascinating displays of the battle and its impact. Guided tours are available, and audioguides are provided for those wanting to tour at their own pace. An introductory film sets the scene and provides useful context, and interactive displays are extremely informative and educational.

Battle - Battle Abbey Map

Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve includes a variety of interesting scenery to explore. Here you'll find everything from soft sandstone cliffs and cliff top heathland and grassland to ancient woodlands and sustainably managed farmland. At 852 acres, it's one of the largest such nature reserves in England and boasts many excellent walks overlooking some of the most spectacular scenery on the south coast.

Allow plenty of time to do some wildlife spotting, including watching for the many migrating birds that cross the English Channel, as well as the fulmars nesting on the cliffs. One of the largest populations of breeding black redstarts in the UK can also be spotted here. Other notable birdlife includes kestrels, peregrine falcons, and buzzards.

The reserve is also becoming increasingly attractive to barn owls and ravens. Also of interest is a small herd of free-roaming Exmoor ponies. A good place to start your adventure is at the visitor center. Here, you'll find a wealth of information about the wildlife and geology of the area.

Location: 148 Martineau Ln, Hastings, East Sussex

Hastings Contemporary

Hastings Contemporary features a sizable permanent collection of important British artworks from the likes of L.S. Lowry, along with regular rotating exhibits. Located overlooking the Stade beach area, the building's dramatic tile-clad design also makes it worth a visit, having drawn inspiration from the old net shops the town is famous for.

There's a special emphasis on works by regional artists, along with displays and information that deals with local cultural history. Self-guided tours are available, along with a variety of interactive exhibits suitable for kids. There's a good café on-site with great views over the beach area from its terrace, plus a well-stocked shop.

Norman statue on the beach in Hastings

Often much quieter than the beaches in other Sussex resort towns, such as Brighton to the west, Hastings' beaches are a delight to explore.

Stretching for a very walkable three miles from the community of Bulverhythe in the west to the Rock-A-Nore cliffs to the east, Hastings' beaches are not only scenic, they're also of immense historical significance, as it was here that William the Conqueror began his conquest of England in 1066.

Easy to access from the town center and its railway station, the main beach (usually simply referred to as Hastings Beach) is centrally situated between Warrior Square and Pelham Place, the Stade Beach, and St. Leonards-on-Sea Beach.

While all are pebble beaches with some sand exposed only at low tide, they're exceptionally wide and usually uncrowded. If you are traveling with kids, be sure to allow them to explore the rock pools for marine life at low tide.

St. Leonards-on-Sea

Located next to Hastings and only a short stroll away along the esplanade, St. Leonards-on-Sea is fun to explore. In addition to having its own wide beach, St. Leonards, as it's usually known, offers a variety of interesting landmarks, including the attractive Warrior Square Gardens and a number of other pleasant parks.

Be sure to also take a wander along Norman Road. Running parallel with the waterfront but set a few blocks away from the beach, this fascinating old street still features numerous original old townhomes and storefronts, including many arts and craft studios and stores selling one-of-a-kind goods.

You'll also find the famous Conqueror's Stone in St. Leonards-on-Sea, located directly opposite the Royal Victoria Hotel . Legend has it that it was here that William the Conqueror took his first meal after setting foot on English soil in the 11th century.

The Shipwreck Museum

The Shipwreck Museum is also worth visiting when exploring The Stade. One of the top free things to do in Hastings, this small museum features a variety of fascinating artifacts from English Channel shipwrecks, some dating as far back as the 1600s.

Other highlights include displays of fossils found in the vicinity, examples of which can also be purchased in the on-site gift shop. You can also learn more about local shipwrecks that you can actually visit, including a 17th-century warship and trading vessel from the 1700s.

Bateman's

Rudyard Kipling , one of England's most famous authors, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and author of The Jungle Book and The Man Who Would Be King , lived in beautiful 17th-century Bateman's from 1902 until his death in 1936. Just 11 miles northwest of Hastings in Burwash , this elegant Jacobean house is home to a number of excellent displays, including Kipling's 1928 Rolls Royce, as well as furnishings.

A highlight of a visit is the chance to visit Kipling's study, where he did much of his writing. Also of interest are the beautiful gardens, designed by Kipling and kept just as they were during his lifetime, and numerous easy walking trails across the property and surrounding countryside.

A pleasant tearoom is also on-site. Guided tours of this popular tourist attraction are available, and are recommended.

Address: Bateman's Lane, Burwash, Etchingham, East Sussex

Bodiam Castle

Believed to have been built in the late 14th century, Bodiam Castle is located on the northern slopes of the Rother Valley, eight miles northeast of Battle. It's widely regarded as one of the most romantic castle ruins in England, as it never had to endure a siege and has been able to retain much of its original character.

Surrounded by the River Rother and an unusually wide moat, this square castle with its sturdy, round battlements stands as if on an island and is a delight to explore. Guided tours are available, and a tearoom and shop are located on-site.

Bodiam Castle and bridge

Afterwards, walk to nearby Bodiam Station, last stop on the 10-mile-long Kent & East Sussex Railway , for a fantastic heritage train ride all the way to beautiful Tenterden in Kent. For a truly memorable sightseeing adventure, buy a return ticket and be sure to allow plenty of time to explore this quaint town.

Location: Bodiam, Robertsbridge, East Sussex

Rye

Located just 12 miles northeast of Hastings, the quaint town of Rye with its bustling harbor is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in England. This must-see tourist attraction is home to enchanting cobbled streets such as Mermaid Street , and the town is chock-full of fun things to do.

Highlights include exploring its excellent boutique shops, cafés and tearooms, restaurants, and inns, including The Mermaid Inn , once the haunt of the notorious Hawkhurst Gang.

Rye

Also visit Camber Castle . Built by Henry VIII and located in lovely Rye Harbour Nature Reserve , interior guided tours of the castle are available. Rye is a popular hangout for writers, and Lamb House, once the home of Henry James, was featured in the hit BBC mini-series Mapp and Lucia .

Another nearby attraction worthy of a visit is Great Dixter House and Gardens in Northiam. This 15th-century manor house features fascinating furniture and needlework displays and is set in a garden designed by Lutyens that includes a sunken garden, a walled garden, and a lily pond, as well as a topiary.

Smugglers Adventure

Smugglers and pirates once frequented the Hastings area, and Smugglers Adventure is a fascinating insight into their lives and times that's suitable for families on vacation. Situated in the pre-glacial St. Clements Caves , the adventure includes an opportunity to explore the labyrinth of caves as you uncover the secrets and dangers facing smugglers through more than 70 life-size characters and hands-on displays. Fun tours led by costumed guides are available.

Another fun attraction, the True Crime Museum , also located in the caves, features fascinating displays of crime-related artifacts and case histories. Other popular things to do for families in and around Hastings include visiting Drusillas Park in Alfriston . Considered one of the best small zoos in the country , it's popular for its Thomas & Friends train and Hello Kitty themed rides.

Also worth visiting is the Blue Reef Aquarium with its displays of aquatic creatures. Kids will also enjoy The Hastings Miniature Railway , which offers a chance to ride a narrow-gauge railway on the seafront.

Location: St. Clement's Caves, Hastings, East Sussex

Herstmonceux Castle

Splendid Herstmonceux Castle , located just 10 miles west of Battle, is a moated red-brick Renaissance manor house dating from the 15th century that once served as home to the Royal Observatory. Historic equipment from the observatory can still be seen at the Herstmonceux Science Centre.

Today, its 600 acres of beautiful woodland and superb Elizabethan gardens are open to the public throughout the spring and summer. The grounds include excellent trails, a lovely folly next to a lake, and magnificent 300-year-old chestnut trees, as well as seven themed formal gardens.

If possible, time your visit for August when medieval fairs and battles are regularly re-enacted. Other frequent events include concerts and falconry displays. There's also a great tearoom located on-site. Castle guided tours are also available.

Location: Herstmonceux, Hailsham, East Sussex

Bexhill-on-Sea

Beautiful Bexhill-on-Sea is well known as a classic Victorian-era town, as well as for being the first place in Britain to have a motor-racing track.

These and other historic facts are celebrated at the Bexhill Museum . Opened in 1913, it's also home to the excellent Sargent Gallery with its quirky mix of objects from the Stone Age to the Egyptians, as well as displays about the town's links with dinosaurs. There's even an original painting by L.S. Lowry on display.

Also worth a visit is the Technology and Motor Racing Heritage Gallery celebrating Bexhill's role as the birthplace of British Motor racing, including a reproduction steam-driven car and the 1993 world-record-breaking Volta electric car. Bexhill is also home to the lovely De La Warr Pavilion , built in 1935 in the International Modernist style, the first welded steel frame building in the country.

Address: 48 Devonshire Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex

Pevensey Castle

William the Conqueror is supposed to have landed in the small resort town of Pevensey Bay in 1066 before heading off to conquer England. A mile inland is the pretty village of Pevensey, where the Normans built a castle using the remains of an old Roman fort.

The 20-foot-tall walls of Pevensey Castle are still standing, as are the remains of the dungeons, a gate tower, and mint house. A new museum has been added to the attraction, tracing the site's history all the way back to the 4th century through displays and collections of artifacts. Guided tours are available.

The historic city of York is also a must-visit, and offers no end of fun things to do, from visiting its mighty cathedral to walking its old city walls.

15 Best Things to Do in Hastings (East Sussex, England)

Where the sandstone ridge of the High Weald tumbles to the English Channel, Hastings is a working fishing port, Victorian resort and a historic settlement.

Hastings was one of a Medieval alliance of coastal towns known as the Cinque Ports, and has a gorgeous old town in a valley against the rocky East and West Hills.

The town gave its name to the Battle of Hastings, the most crucial event in English history when William of Normandy defeated the Anglo-Saxon pretender to the throne Harold Godwinson to begin the Norman Conquest.

The battlefield and its abbey are only 15 minutes by road or train, while there’s an award-winning pier, museums, art galleries and light-hearted family attractions to keep you in town for at least a day.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Hastings :

1. Hastings Old Town

Hastings Old Town

The wonderfully quaint old quarter, in Hastings’ easternmost valley follows a cosy Medieval layout and has remnants of a wall raised in the 14th century during the 100 Years’ War.

Along the High Street and intersecting alleys are half-timbered houses and Georgian facades that conceal much older buildings.

These hold antiques shops, quirky one-off boutiques, historic inns, galleries, cafes and seafood restaurants.

There’s always something going on in summer, like the Seafood and Wine Festival, or the traditional Jack in the Green.

By the water is the Stade harbour, which we’ll talk about in more detail later.

But along Rock-a-Nore Road stand tall, black wooden huts, which are “net shops”, going back to the 19th century and providing weatherproof storage for nets and other fishing gear.

2. Battle Abbey

Battle Abbey

A journey that needs to b made if you want to tap into the history of Hastings, Battle Abbey is a 15-minute drive or train ride.

A partial ruin, this Benedictine abbey was erected on the site of the Battle of Hastings in 1070 by the Normans as penance for the slaughter that took place in their conquest of England.

The high altar was said to be positioned on the exact spot where the Anglo-Saxon King Harold fell.

This is now marked by a stone, as the abbey was torn down in the Reformation, and its abbot’s quarters were turned into a stately home.

You can take a look around the battlefield with an audioguide, watch a film and handle replica weapons at the visitor centre.

The house has a lovely 19th-century walled garden and you can make your way around the 13th-century ruins of the abbey

3. Alexandra Park

Alexandra Park

Meandering out to Hastings’ suburbs from the town centre, the 109-acre Alexandra Park has a linear design laid out in the 1870s by Robert Marnock, one of the leading landscapers of the day.

This park was given a multimillion pound regeneration in the early 2000s and since then has become an annual winner of the Green Flag Award.

The lower section has formal gardens around reservoirs, while the more northern part is natural and wooded.

Alexandra Park has an exceptionally rich collection of trees, a cafe, an adventure playground and a bandstand used for concerts in summer.

Youngsters will also love the miniature railway at the north end of the park.

4. Hastings Country Park

Hastings Country Park

A great thing about Hastings is that you can depart on foot and be in protected countryside within minutes.

The Hastings Country Park is at the southernmost point of the High Weald Area of Natural Beauty, and has 660 acres of ancient woodland, cliffs and heathland.

The scene of a Bronze Age fort, this land has seen human activity since the Palaeolithic Age, and the Celts, Romans and Saxons all left their mark.

A feature of the park is its glens, sandstone valleys densely wooded and with beds of gorse shrub, as well as rare mosses, liverworts and lichens.

Fulmars, peregrines and black redstarts breed in the cliffs, while stonechats and Dartford warblers breed among the gorsr in the valleys.

If you come by in spring or autumn you may see some migrating bird species like Pallas’s leaf warblers, red-rumped swallows and Sardinian warblers.

5. Cliff Railways

Cliff Railways

Hastings has two funicular railways rattling up and down its sandstone cliffs.

The older of the two is the 150-metre West Hill Lift, which opened in 1891 and serves Hastings Castle and St Clements Caves.

This railway is unusual in that it runs through a tunnel and still uses its Victorian coaches.

The lower station is on the charming George Street departing from the old town.

The East Hill Lift will get you up to Hastings Country Park, and claims to be the UK’s steepest funicular railway, with a gradient of 78%. This line opened in 1902 and is capped with a pair of towers built to house the water tanks for the initial hydraulic propulsion system.

6. Jerwood Gallery

Jerwood Gallery

On the Stade in front of the old town is a contemporary art museum that opened in 2012 in a beautifully understated building covered with 8,000 black glazed tiles from Kent.

Its low profile and cladding helps it blend with the net shops along the Stade.

The collection at the Jerwood Gallery has works by some of the big names of modern British art like Stanley Spencer, L. S. Lowry, Walter Sickert, Patrick Caulfield, Ben Nicholson and Augustus John.

There are normally three temporary exhibitions at any time.

Past artists featured at these shows include the Primitivist Christopher Wood and illustrator Quentin Blake.

In summer 2018 there was an exhibition marking the centenary of Abstract Expressionist Paul Feiler, a member of the influential St Ives School.

7. Hastings Castle

Hastings Castle

On the West Hill is what’s left of Hastings’ Norman motte-and-bailey castle.

One of the special things about this fortification is that it was started immediately after William the Conqueror landed, and before the Battle of Hastings even took place.

The ruined building there now dates from the reign of Henry III in the 13th century.

From that point on, Hastings Castle would be beset by trouble.

Some of the complex collapsed into the sea during a storm at the end of the 13th century, the castle was attacked and burnt during French attacks in the 14th century, abandoned in the 16th century and hit by bombs in the Second World War.

Somehow about a third of the structure is still standing, including a cloistered chapel and dungeons, labelled with information panels.

In a tent you can watch the “1066 Story”, detailing the castle’s history and the famous battle.

8. St Clements Caves

St Clements Caves

Smuggling was rife in Hastings for hundreds of years, and the sandstone caves on West Hill were burrowed with hundreds of metres of tunnels to move and store contraband like rum.

That activity continued up to the end of the Napoleonic Wars, when the town was gentrified as a resort.

St Clements Caves were rediscovered in 1820, and attracted royalty after they became a tourist attraction in Victorian times.

In this atmospheric and supposedly haunted environment, the world of smuggling is brought back to life with 70 life-sized figures of bootleggers, pirates and smugglers, accompanied by sound effects and interactive games for kids.

9. Pelham Beach

Pelham Beach

The most accommodating patch of coast in Hastings is the section between the pier and harbour.

Pelham Beach is all shingle, except when the tide receded and there are large patches of sand.

If you find the beach a little uncomfortable there are deck chairs for hire, and the sea is watched by RNLI lifeguards all summer long.

There’s some beautiful old architecture on the seafront, like a Georgian crescent centred on St Mary in the Castle, a Neoclassical church turned into a performing arts space.

The seafront has any number of cafes, restaurants and ice cream parlours, combined with family attractions like adventure golf, a trampoline park and amusement arcades.

10. Hastings Pier

Hastings Pier

Dating back to 1872, Hastings Pier pushes out into the English Channel for 280 metres.

Like all piers it has been susceptible to the elements, and suffered storm damage in 1990 and then a fire in 2010, which took out 95% of the structure.

The renovation project that followed won the coveted Stirling Prize for architecture in 2017, and the result is something that respects the tradition of the site, but is undeniably modern.

There’s a state-of-the-art exhibition in “the Deck” visitor centre, and a cafe with a scenic view on the upper floor, as well as food and drink stands, an interpretation trail, binoculars and telescopes.

The pier hosts free family workshops, live music, outdoor cinema screenings and street performers in summer.

11. Shipwreck Museum

Shipwreck Museum

If ever there were a place for a museum about shipwrecks it’s on the busiest shipping lane in the world, where up to 600 ships pass through each day.

The museum charts some of the many thousands of vessels that have been wrecked off the coast of Southeast England, from Goodwin Sands in Kent (more 2,000 shipwrecks have happened in this one spot) to Pevensey Bay in East Sussex.

The museum goes into detail on the geology and environmental conditions that has helped preserve many of these wrecks in situ.

There are artefacts from Anne, a 17th-century warship from the reign of Charles II and Amsterdam, a Dutch East Indiaman wrecked in 1749. The museum is multisensory, with lots of things to touch, smell and hear.

12. Hastings Museum and Art Gallery

Hastings Museum And Art Gallery

The town’s museum has a diversity of exhibitions in a brick and limestone, Elizabethan-style mansion.

The highlight is the Durbar Hall, a magnificent interior space created for London’s Colonial & Indian Exhibition of 1886, with intricate wooden carvings in an Indian Islamic style.

The upper floor of the Durbar Hall, holds an exhibition of world art.

There’s an interactive dinosaur gallery for kids, and the town’s past is recounted at the Story of Hastings in 66 Objects.

Also worth a look is the exhibition of Native American artefacts relating to Grey Owl, or Archibald Belaney, a Hastings-born emigrant to Canada who fabricated a First Nations identity and became a prominent conservationist.

His true identity wasn’t discovered until after his death.

13. True Crime Museum

True Crime Museum

In the cliffs in front of Pelham Beach is a hard-hitting museum for grown-ups with a fascination for the darkest side of humanity.

The True Crime Museum has some chilling artefacts, like the actual tubs used by John George Haigh “The Acid Bath Murderer” to dissolve his victims, love letters from a serial killer, a genuine lethal injection table and paraphernalia connected to the infamous East End gangsters, the Krays.

The Crime Lab has games for wannabe forensic scientists, and there’s also a surround sound cinema with authentic recorded confessions by some of the most notorious serial killers.

14. Blue Reef Aquarium

Blue Reef Aquarium

Close to the East Hill Cliff Railway, the Blue Reef Aquarium has hundreds of marine creatures like rays, sharks, seahorses and octopuses, as well as a Jungle Room with snakes and bearded dragons.

The headline attractions is the enormous ocean tank with an underwater tunnel to see shoals of brightly coloured tropical fish from below.

The aquarium organises talks and feeds every hour during opening times, including two ocean presentations at the largest tropical tank, when you can find out more about the black reef sharks.

There are also two chances to come into contact with aquarium’s reptiles, as well as a ray feed, octopus talk and archerfish feed.

15. The Stade

The Stade

Fronting the old town, east of Pelham Beach, is Europe’s largest fleet of beach-launched fishing boats in Europe.

A compelling slice of living history, the Stade is a shingle bay protected by a groyne and has been used for beaching boats for more than a millennium.

Originally the beach was small, until the construction of the harbour and groyne at the end of the 19th century caused a steep bed of shingle to accumulate.

At high tide the boats can slip into the sea easily enough, but they have to be hauled onto the beach when they come back.

In the past this was done with horses, but each boat now has a winch to pull itself ashore, while a caterpillar tractor is on standby for extra power.

#1 Wander the Old Town

England, Hastings, Shop

As I mentioned in the introduction, there’s a few different parts to the town of Hastings (which is really the size of a city, but is called a town I guess because it doesn’t have a Cathedral) and one part you absolutely can’t miss is the wonderful Old Town.

Full of cobbled streets, independent shops, quirky artifacts, traditional fish and chip bars, along with vintage stores and the odd trendy restaurant or café, this is a stunning spot you can easily get lost in for a few hours.

#2 Visit Alexandra Park

England, Hastings, New Town

A beautiful public area in Hastings, Alexandra Park is definitely one of the best green spaces you must visit in this town thanks to its large pond and gardens.

Situated behind the station, this is actually Hastings largest park space and is a delight for the whole family with playgrounds, cafes and some seriously beautiful trees.

Also worth a visit is Hastings’ Country Park, which is a lovely local nature reserve just out of the city to the east. Located up on the cliffs, it has stunning views of the expansive coastline below, which are magnificent on a clear day.

#3 Take the Funicular

England, Hastings, West Hill Lift

It’s a defining icon in Hastings and it’s definitely one of the best things to do here!

Yes taking the funicular up above the town is an absolute Hastings classic, which sums up the kitsch charm of much of this seaside destination.

This cliff railway, as it’s known, is the steepest in the UK and dates back to the Victorian era – the carriages still retain the historic look.

There’s actually a few different funiculars, which you can use to get to West Hill, East Hill or the Country Park I mentioned above.

#4 Check out the Hastings Contemporary

England, East Sussex, Hastings Contemporary

From things to do in Hastings that require some physical energy, we now move to a rather more sedate activity, and that is visiting the wonderful Hastings Contemporary .

Originally opened in 2012, and formerly known as the Jerwood Gallery, this is an incredible art space with a mix of permanent and revolving exhibitions that are well worth checking out.

Oh and it’s free to enter too!

England, Hastings, West Hill

#5 Spend a Few Hours at Hastings Castle

And another cultural one of this list of must-do things in Hastings, it’s visit Hastings Castle.

Amazingly not far from the centre of the town, this was originally a wooden tower built on top of a manmade mound.

Later developed into a stone fortress after William the Conqueror’s coronation, (yep we’re back to good old 1066 here!), the ruins you can visit today and are an important part of this historical story.

Tickets cost around £5 to enter and can be bought at the entrance.

#6 Stroll the Iconic Pier

England, Hastings, Pier

And from one historical structure of importance to another, yes down on the seafront now, there’s no way you should come to Hastings and not stroll along the wonderful iconic pier here.

Recently regenerated, but originally built in 1872, this was once a music venue that sadly fell into disrepair following bad storms and fire.

But it’s now been returned to its former glory and strolling along it is a must!

#7 Find Beautiful Pebbles at Pelham Beach

England, Hastings, Pelham Beach

And just alongside the pier is the lovely Pelham Beach.

The main stretch of beach near to Hastings New Town, this is a pebbly affair, but it’s easy access and cute beach huts still make it a firm favourite.

Definitely one of the best things to do in Hastings, Pelham Beach is one you can’t miss.

#8 Be Fascinated at the Shipwreck Museum

England, Hastings, Shipwreck Museum

But now we turn from the beach to the sea, and it’s time to learn about the seafaring history of this town and some of its unfortunate tales.

Containing many artefacts from ships that met their fate in the English Channel, Hastings Shipwreck Museum is a fascinating insight into how dangerous sailing used to be back in the day (and still is to some degree).

Adult entrance tickets cost £6.50 and can be bought on the door.

#9 Ride on the Miniature Railway

England, Hastings, Minature Railway

And right by the Shipwreck Museum is one of Hastings top novelty attractions, the miniature railway!

You can actually grab a ride on this tiny train, which runs on real tracks through the historic fishing port of Hastings, for a 600 yard journey!

A hilarious activity that is great for kids (big and small), the trip only costs £1.50 for a single journey or £2.50 for a return, and is well worth it in my opinion!

#10 Play a Game of Bingo

England, Hastings, Art

What can I say, no time in an old English seaside town is complete without a game of bingo.

Somewhere between an initiation process, a rite of passage and a slice of cultural voyeurism, you can’t miss this one when you come down to Hastings.

#11 Eat your Weight in Fish and Chips

England, Hastings, Fresh Fish

Nor can you miss this one!

Whether it’s battered or fresh, fish is definitely the order of the day in this seaside town and there’s plenty of ops when it comes to eating the stuff too – from your traditional chippies to your more upmarket spots.

The other thing that everyone eats when they come to Hastings is sweets-  there’s heaps of vintage-esque sweet stores here with tons of bright, colourful, sugary treats in jars many find hard to refuse!

#12 Go Fishing

England, Hastings, The Stade

And if you’re not eating the fish, then you’re perhaps heading out to catch some on a fishing trip from Hastings?

Or, at the very least, you’re wandering around The Stade – the heart of the historic fishing trade here and the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Britain.

This is a great spot to head to if you’re into your photography as well as, with authentic character by the bucketload.

#13 Shop for Antiques

England, East Sussex, Hastings Store

And talking of authentic character, there’s so many great quirky, vintage shops in Hastings, that exploring a couple of them is a must while you are here.

The antique sellers, in particular, are the kings of kitsch in these parts, so definitely check out a couple of them if this is your thing.

#14 Find Rock-a-Nore Beach

England, Hastings, Rock-a-Nore Beach

A sandy gem very close to Hastings Old Town, if the main Pelham Beach is a bit too busy, or a bit too stony for you, then Rock-a-Nore Beach is the one to head for.

An amazing spot to enjoy the sun, the sand and the sea, this quiet corner is a peaceful retreat and finding this beautiful, chilled spot was certainly one of my favourite things to do in Hastings.

#15 Swim in the Sea

England, Sussex, Hastings Beach Huts

And once you do find it, or any strip of sea along Hastings expansive coastline for that matter, you’ve got to get in the water!

Safety first, bravery second!

#16 Play a Game of Mini Golf

England, Hastings, Wheel

But back on dry land, who doesn’t love a game of mini golf?

Ok, well I don’t, but I know loads of people do, so this one’s for you guys!

Known as adventure golf, the course along the seafront in Hastings is actually 3 championship miniature golf courses rolled into one!

This makes it the biggest in the UK, and is accompanied by a number of rides in the area too.

Perfect spot to head for families.

England, Hastings, Cycle Trail 2

However, if you’re into sports that involve 2 wheels, rather than a set of clubs, then maybe Hasting’s beautiful cycle track is the one for you instead.

Running all along the seafront for 7km, you can hire bikes along here too.

Otherwise, bring your own bike and enjoy a massive ride as part of the National Cycle Trail 2, which actually runs through Hastings on its journey all along England’s south coast from Dover in Kent to St. Austell in Cornwall and is 361 miles long!

#18 Explore East Hill

England, Hastings, Clifftop Railway

But if it’s more elevated views of the coast you’re after in Hastings, then it’s hard to overlook (pardon the pun!) East Hill.

Rising above the Old Town, you can catch the clifftop railway up here and then take in the sweeping vistas and some lovely walks.

A favourite stroll of many is from East Hill to Ecclesbourne Reservoir, which is an ideal 6km trail if you fancy stretching your legs.

And it goes without saying, once you’ve paid for the funicular, this is all free!

#19 Hit Up Robertson Street

England, Hastings, Robertson Street

And while I know I’ve mentioned the Old Town in Hastings with its lovely cobbled streets and quirky shops, there’s no question the so-called New Town here is coming along the regeneration line too.

Top of the list to see is Robertson Street, which is filled with great bars and restaurants – perfect if you’re looking for a coffee, lunch, a drink or dinner.

The Vintage Living shop along this street is also well worth a look in too!

#20 Drink in a Traditional Pub

England, Hastings, Pub

Rounding up this list now and winding down as we approach the end, what better place to finish up in Hastings than at a classic English pub?

There’s too many to choose from here, but all of them boast plenty of character and some great pints!

#21 Don’t Miss Battle

England, Battle, Abbey

And last but not least, if you come to Hastings, you simply can’t miss a side trip to the nearby town that gives this whole region its biggest claim to fame.

Yes Battle, where (all together now) the Battle of Hastings took place (see, joining the dots there), is just a few of stops from Hastings on the train and is well worth a couple of hours (or more) of your time

If you’re either heading to (or back from) Hastings via London Charing Cross station, then Battle is actually a stop on the way, meaning you can easily hop off and head into the centre of this delightful town to visit the famous Abbey where it all took place many years ago.

The Abbey and battlegrounds are managed by English Heritage , so entrance is free to members, otherwise tickets can be booked in advance via their website .

Once you’ve learnt all about what went on in 1066 here, you can then enjoy one of the many trails in this countryside around – one of the biggest and best, will actually take you all the way to the charming destination of Rye – another gem of a destination in East Sussex.

Salty sea dog

Set between hills that reach to the sea, Hastings is an oyster that comes with its own grit, where the smooth bustle of modern life rubs along with the rough edges of tradition. Look up and you’ll see the ruins of the castle watching over the town, as they have in one guise or another for nearly 1,000 years . The three-mile seafront stretches from the fishing fleet at the eastern end through the hustle and bustle of the arcades and funfair rides, to the pier and unique double-decker promenade Bottle Alley , arriving finally at peaceful Grosvenor Gardens.

Hello Sussex

What to see and do in Hastings Old Town, East Sussex

By: Author Suzanne Jones

Posted on Last updated: 19 April 2023

Hastings Old Town in East Sussex is my favourite local seaside town. Slightly bohemian, and incredibly artsy, the old town comes with oodles of quirk. Its muddle of houses, shops and pubs sit tucked between two cliffs a fifteen-minute walk east of Hastings main town.

Slightly worn in places, Hastings Old Town has a wealth of character and a welcoming community feel. It’s small enough to explore on foot but there’s enough to keep you busy for a weekend. Read on for the best things to do in Hastings Old Town…

Hastings Seafront

The stade, hastings old town.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

Start at the Stade. The shingle beach, called the Stade, is home to Europe’s largest beach-launched fishing fleet. Stade is the old Saxon word for landing place and it’s where you’ll see Hastings’ working fishing boats, the net huts and the Fisherman’s Museum.

Nearby are stalls selling freshly caught fish, winkles, cockles, shrimp and other locally caught seafood. I always buy a pot of cockles and load it with vinegar – delicious!

Tip: Guard your seafood carefully. The seagulls have become incredibly canny at whipping them from your hand. They even employ diversion tactics where one gull will distract you whilst the other pinches your pot of prawns. You’ve been warned!

Hastings Net Huts

You can’t miss the net huts on The Stade. About thirty towering wooden sheds with pitched roofs gather together on the shingle. The grade II listed black sheds were built to house fishing gear which, before the days of plastic, would rot away if left in the open.

The sheds’ lofty stature was due to lack of space on the small beach so they were built upwards instead of outwards and tarred for weather-proofing.

Some of the huts sell freshly caught fish or you can buy it from the kiosks opposite the Stade or from the fishermens’ huts on the beach. You can’t buy much fresher and it has no carbon footprint.

Hastings Fisherman’s Museum

Learn more about the huts and the history of fishing in the area at Hastings Fisherman’s Museum which is in the old church on the Stade. The last surviving Hastings sailing lugger, The Enterprise, is installed inside.

Nearby is the Blue Reef Aquarium and the Shipwreck Museum. The museum is open 364 days a year, and admission is free, although donations are welcomed.

Hastings Beach

Walk to end of Rock-a-Nore through to the other side of the car park and you’ll come to Rock-a-Nore beach with view of Hastings Country Park in the distance. A good spot for picnicking and rock-pooling.

Hastings Contemporary

Just past the net huts on The Stade is the gleaming, black-tiled Hastings Contemporary gallery, which opened in March 2012. The gallery houses a collection of modern and contemporary British art together with varied temporary exhibitions showing the best of British painting.

A roof café overlooking the fishing beach serves tasty local fare and a sun terrace offers panoramic coastal views. A shop stocks a wide selection of gifts, books and products relating to the current exhibitions.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

The gallery is part of the Coastal Culture Trail along with the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and Eastbourne’s Towner Art Gallery. Entry: Adults from £8. Children under 16 go free.

On the first Tuesday of every month the gallery is free to all between the hours of 4pm – 8pm. Opening Times: Tuesday – Sunday, 11am – 5pm, Bank Holiday Mondays, 11am – 5pm (Last admission 4.30pm)

The Stade Open Space

Behind the gallery is an open space for outdoor events in the heart of Hastings. The circles you’ll see on the ground represent the path trodden by the horses which once worked the capstans to pull the fishing boats to shore.

Stade Saturdays is a programme of free performances which take place here from May to October including dancing, music and small concerts.

The Funicular at East Hill Cliff Railway

For fabulous views over the town’s mishmash of roof tops, The Stade and access to Hastings Country Park head up the East Hill Cliff Funicular on Rock-a-Nore Road.

It’s the steepest funicular railway in the UK and originally opened in 1902. It’s kind of like taking a tram up a cliff. The East Hill Lift is wheelchair accessible.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

The West Hill Lift, Hastings

Of course, Hastings doesn’t do things by halves so you’ll find a second funicular hauling visitors up the West Hill. The lower station is accessed from the pedestrianised George Street.

West Hill Lift passes through a tunnel and on reaching the top, as well as more fabulous views, there’s access to the ruins of Hastings Castle and Smuggler’s Adventure caves.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

Hastings Smuggler’s Caves

St Clements Caves, named after the nearby church, are home to the Smugglers’ Adventure which tells the dark, and sometimes ghostly, tales of smuggling along the Sussex coast over 200 years ago. ‘Hairy Jack’ leads visitors through tunnels, caverns and caves.

Kids and adults alike will love the caves and the displays, interactive activities and hands-on features.

Explore the Twittens

You could take the funicular back down to the Old Town or you could wind your way back down through the ‘twittens’. Twittens are a thing in Sussex. If you haven’t heard of them before they’re tiny, narrow passageways that link streets and lanes together.

Hastings Old Town has a network of twittens. As you pass the weather-boarded, half-timbered cottages of All Saints Street you’ll notice these little alleys disappearing between the houses and you’ll find them leading down from the West Hill. Follow them, explore them and come across some of Hastings’ Old Town secrets.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

Don’t pass The Crown in All Saints Street without stopping for a bite to eat or a drink. This lively independent pub serves great food in a contemporary setting.

For a contrast keep going and you’ll come to The Stag a sixteenth century Inn with ancient beams and a rustic feel. They also serve good food and have live music.

At this point cross the street and walk back down the other side until you come to a twitten. Make your way down the passageway and you’ll come to The Bourne (A259). The Bourne is a busy street and was once a site of a stream heading down to the sea.

Cross The Bourne and you should see a small car park opposite. At the back of the car park is Wellington Passage. Walk through and you’ll come to the High Street…

High Street, Hastings, East Sussex

The High Street in Hastings is my favourite shopping street with dozens of independent shops selling everything from art and antiques to upmarket homewares, flowers, artisan breads and general quirk.

A wander up and down the High Street dropping by the eclectic mix of shops will keep you occupied for an hour or two. There are some good pubs, coffee shops and delis in the High Street too.

A G Hendy, Hastings

Be sure to drop into AG Hendy which has to be the quirkiest shop in Hastings. Stepping inside the 1920s shop front you’ll be transported to a bygone era of ostrich feather dusters, vintage kitchenware and housewares of the kind you’ll remember your Grandma using.

Much of the stock is eco-friendly and its worth checking out all the floors some of which are home to Hendy’s personal collection of vintage oddities. And, indeed, they are odd…

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

Made in Hastings offers a range of lovely homemade crafted gifts and homeware from talented makers in and around Hastings.  Little Treasures has a good stock of retro and vintage goods.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

The First in Last Out ( FILO ) is one of the best of Hasting’s 27 (or thereabouts) pubs. With a real fire going throughout the winter it’s a cosy place to enjoy a meal and live music.

The pub serves six of its own ales produced in its on-site microbrewery. You’ll find the FILO at 14-16 High Street next to Wellington Passage – allegedly one of the most haunted spots in the town.

Coffee and Cake

For coffee and a bite drop by Penbuckle’s Deli. The tiny tea-room is open 7 days a week and serves fantastic coffee, cakes and pastries. Savoury offerings include light lunches, cheese and charcuterie platters paired with a glass of wine or craft ale.

Judges bakery next door is good for coffee too and sells and range of artisan breads and local organic goods.

Electric Palace Cinema, Hastings

If you like your films vintage then step into the Electric Palace Cinema on the High Street for less mainstream arthouse and world film screenings. It’s oh so Hastings!

Reste is a beautiful shop of cool, calm colours and beautiful handmade pieces. A source of artisanal and handcrafted products and accessories tracked down from around the world and brought to Hastings. It’s a shop I can never resist visiting when I’m in town. They also host craft workshops.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

You’ll find them at the bottom of the High Street just before you turn right onto…

George Street, Hastings

An amble down George Street is a must-do on your visit to Hastings. The narrow pedestrian street links the old town with the seafront. You’ll find some fabulous independent shops, restaurants and cafes. Stop for coffee, find a window seat and watch the quirky world of Hastings go by.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

Butler’s Emporium

Butler’s Emporium started out in 1832 as a hardware shop and many of the original fixtures have remained which makes it the perfect backdrop for an eclectic mix of homeware, haberdashery, clothing, jewellery and accessories.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

As well as galleries and gift shops in George Street you’ll find an old-fashioned sweet shop, a tobacco and pipe shop a few vintage shops. Right at the end is Di Pola’s gelato shop – I recommend the pistachio flavour gelato.

Vintage Hastings

Vintage is big in Hastings Old Town. As well as a profusion of antique and bric-a-brac shops there’s a wide range of vintage shops selling clothing, furniture and household goods in the High Street.

For Bric-a-brac try Courthouse Street which cuts through from the bottom of the High Street to The Bourne.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

Where to eat in Hastings Old Town

I have a few favourite places to eat in the old town.

Hastings, East Sussex. A bit bohemian, incredibly artsy and brimming with quirk. Small enough to explore on foot with enough to keep you busy for a weekend. What to see and do in Hastings Old Town

  • Isabella’s for excellent Turkish food
  • Maggie’s for the best fish and chips in town
  • Boulevard Bookshop and Thai Cafe – authentic Thai food in a bookshop
  • Jasmine Thai – for excellent Thai food although service can be slow when its busy
  • Rock-a-Nore Kitchen Boat to plate food close to the net huts

When you’ve eaten head for one of the old town pubs. Most have live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Good pubs for music include The FILO, The Dolphin, The Standard and the Jenny Lind. The Jolly Fisherman on Hastings seafront is a cosy bar selling local craft beers and nibbles.

Where to Stay in Hastings

Bed and breakfast in hastings old town.

There are a good choice of B&Bs in Hastings and I can recommend The Laindons guest house in the heart of the old town at 23 High Street. The Georgian grade II listed building has five contemporary style rooms and serves breakfast in the airy conservatory overlooking the East Hill nature park.

The Laindons, Hastings B&B

From Brighton trains to Hastings are with Southern Rail and the service takes around 70 minutes. Check for times and prices on The Trainline.

Hastings is one of my absolute favourite places to go in the UK, it's always a fun way to spend a weekend and I Iove the mix or art and culture it has while still remaining real, with a sense of community. Great post!

We love it too. There are so many great restaurants, cosy cafes and local food producers as well as heaps of art, culture and always a festival or event going on. It's a very lively, lovely part of the south coast.
