The same weather and terrain that make the Centennial State a skiing destination also make it a popular place for another winter activity: snowmobiling. With the help of traveler input and expert opinion, U.S. News identified the following Colorado snowmobile tours – all of which have knowledgeable and skilled guides – as the best available.

Like Colorado ski resort season, snowmobiling season typically runs from November to April, but specific tour companies' schedules may differ. Be aware that age restrictions for snowmobile operators and passengers vary among tour companies. And be sure to dress for the cold as most companies do not provide boots, scarves, neck gaiters, goggles or other gear beyond helmets.

Vail: Sage Outdoor Adventures – Adventure Snowmobile Tour

Price: Adults from $239; kids from $119 Duration: 2 hours

This excursion on a private course boasts views of several mountain ranges, the Continental Divide and peaks standing 14,000 feet. During the 100-mile ride, participants will climb 2,400 feet to admire the ski areas and alpine ridges below. Snowmobilers rave about both the stunning views and the adept guides. Outings occur daily from mid-November to early April at set times between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Prices include the use of a helmet. Other winter weather gear is available for purchase (and a limited number of snowsuits and boots are available for rental). Kids must be at least 5 years old to participate; drivers must be at least 14 years old.

In addition to private tours, Sage Outdoor Adventures also offers a Performance Snowmobile Tour, which travels a longer distance and costs more. Sage Outdoor Adventures encourages tour-takers to use their own transportation to reach their base lodge in Wolcott (about 30 miles west of Vail), but can provide pickup service in Avon, Beaver Creek or Vail at an additional charge. Note: Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by a legal guardian.

They're often described as the most photographed mountains in North America. Along with the views, you'll also enjoy historical commentary from your guide about the Maroon Creek Valley. Tour-takers consistently describe guides as helpful, informative and friendly. The remarkable views also garner high marks.

From November through April, tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday starting at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Fees include use of a snowmobile and helmet. Drivers must be at least 18 years old with a driver's license; passengers must be at least 4 years old. Longer tours including lunch (featuring hamburgers made with beef from cattle raised on the T-Lazy-7 Ranch in Aspen) are also available.

Guide to Snowmobiling in Colorado

Snowmobiling Grand County Colorado Overlook

Snowmobiling is a sure way to crack a smile on your face during the snowy season. You can rip at incredible speeds through vast landscapes, whether you own your own snowmobile or not.

Colorado’s national forests are loaded with free snowmobile trails. Places like Vail Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass are meccas for snowmobilers all winter long.

Where to rent a snowmobile

There are snowmobile rentals available throughout Colorado’s Rockies. Prices and tours vary, usually around a couple of hundred bucks for a few hours. Some rentals include guided tours, while others just give you the snowmobile and tell you where you could go.

Requirements vary, but usually, drivers must be 18 years old and passengers at least 3. Usually single and double rider snowmobiles are available.

Types of snowmobile tours

Tours range in length from an hour to full-day choices. Usually, half and full days are the most popular. A few hours on a snowmobile is a good amount of time.

Guided – These tours wind all over Colorado’s Rockies, some to ghost towns, others over alpine passes. Most tours will lead you through the national forests and mountainsides at limited speeds single file until you get to open areas where you can really let loose. If there’s trouble, your guide is there to help you out.

Unguided – Rent a snowmobile, get some advice and head out. It’s always best to go with at least one person, if not a small group. Explore the wilderness on your own terms. By-the-hour, half-day, full-day, and overnight rentals are all available. You probably will need to be at least 18+ years old to rent a snowmobile.

What to wear for snowmobiling

  • Snow pants and jacket
  • Helmet, provided with rental
  • Waterproof ski gloves
  • Waterproof winter boots
  • Sunglasses or snow goggles
  • Multiple layers
  • Sunscreen and chapstick

It’s ok to be a little nervous thinking about something you have never done! Our goal is to facilitate an experience that will be fun, not stressful. We will never ask you to do anything outside your ability or comfort level. Our guides are courteous, approachable, and polite, and here to help you get confident! They are great teachers that can pick out small flaws in your riding, if any, and give you quick techniques that will have you driving like a pro in minutes!

  • Chevron down OUR SNOWMOBILE EQUIPMENT

Our snowmobiles are manufactured by BRP, the mother company of Ski-Doo, a monstrosity of a manufacturer that makes wave runners, snowcats, airplanes, snowmobiles, etc. In short, they drop millions and millions of dollars into their engineering and development of snowmobiles so that they are the most fun, and easiest snowmobiles to drive on the planet. BRP is great at what they do.

  • Chevron down OUR CUSTOM SNOWMOBILE TRAILS

As for the trails, our grooming team and schedule are setting new standards in the state. We boast 2 snowcat groomers, like the ones you see on the ski hill, and 3 finish grade drag groomers that are pulled behind a snowmobile, and a team that takes great pride in the “art form” of creating the best riding surface possible. NEVER will you encounter the dreaded snowmobile trail “whoops” or “washboards”. That is out of the question for us.

Only on those super windy days will you find some off-camber sections of the trail from snow blowing around, but rest assured, you will probably see a team of guys in neon jackets buzzing around the mountain trying to keep up with mother nature as best we can! We maintain a riding area bigger than Vail ski area, exclusive to Sage guests only. Snowmobiling near Vail Colorado doesn’t get any better than with us here at Sage.

This place not only was affordable but compared to all the other surrounding locations it definitely was more personalized and friendly! Our guides name was Tim and he not only took us over 3 mountain ranges and drop a bucket load of knowledge on us about the area he made myself and friends want to come back and do the advanced course. The views we had were incredible at 12500… read more →

High Country snowmobile Tours was amazing. We saw some of he most amazing views. We first took the Mountain top tour then came back for more fun on the advance course ride. Our guide was super fun and friendly both times. An experience I'll never forget!

We had a GREAT time. Trevor our guide was outstanding. This was our first time on a snow machine. We have been wanting to for a long time, but with an autistic son it just seemed like something we wouldn't be able to do. Or at least would have to find just the right moment without him in order to go. We had our chance and jumped. We took a… read more →

We had an awesome time! The views were amazing and our guide was very accommodating with the folks in our party that were new to snowmobiling. Highly recommend the snow tubing too, as the hill was awesome and getting pulled up the hill by your guide is almost as much fun as going down. Learn More

Heeney Outpost We had an absolutely wonderful time. The trail was stunning. Matt, our tour guide, was so helpful. He stopped at places and told us where we were and some stories about the them. He is very knowledgeable and very friendly. We had a great time and will definitely return!!! Learn More

Top of the mountain tour Great time with the guys on this adventure. Will was our guide and was great. Would say a bit of riding experience goes a ways in this more challenging trip up to 13,000ft. Anyone can do it but it was more challenging for some. Will showed good patience and helped with the less accustomed riders. Overall great time and would highly recommend to all! Might… read more →

Great tour. Recommend Devan as a guide. Got a group of guys together and went for the scenic tour. Our guide was Devan and she was great. Devan was great at moving at the speed that we wanted to move at. A great balance of sight seeing as well as riding. We were able to see some amazing views while having a great time riding around. Devan was sure to… read more →

Great tour and tubing! Did a 2 hour snowmobile and tube tour with family of 4 on 2 snowmobiles. Staff were very friendly and professional. Snowmobiles were in great shape and ran well. Trails were beautiful. This location is far outside of the towns and away from highways. Tubing was probably the best part! Although would recommend that there be another employee at that location to run both machines and… read more →

Great Snowmobile Trip! I've been on snowmobile trips before and this one was my favorite! We took the trip that was at Heeney Road and the scenery was perfect, going through forest, thick trees, and open high country. Great views and a place to "open it up a little"! Our guide, Matt, was great and lots of fun. Highly recommend this adventure! Learn More

It was Awesome We had the pleasure of doing this after an overnight snowfall. The powder was deep, like a foot deep. This made the snowmobile a little sluggish turning, but that was not an issue for us. it was absolutely beautiful driving in and out of Aspens and Evergreens, every turn was like a post card. The tour runs in and out, up and down across a 3000 acre… read more →

Ready to Ride Again! Truly enjoyed my first experience snowmobiling! I chose to ride with our guide, Matt and was able to really sit back and enjoy the breathtaking beauty before me! The staff was very welcoming and friendly Definitely will return for another ride! Many thanks Matt!!! Learn More

Top of the World Took my grandson to the top of Birdseye Gulch. It was absolutely amazing! He absolutely loved it, and so did I. William, our leader, is a real pro. He knows his stuff, and knows how to lead you on the ride of your life. Learn More

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! BEST snowmobile tour EVER!! We have gone on a snowmobile tour before, but High Country Tours and Will, our tour guide, BY FAR THE BEST!!!! The trails we went on were exciting, adventurous and fun BUT our tour guide, Will, made it the coolest 3 hours we've ever had in our lives. Our kids, 18 & 20, had the time of their lives.
