Floods Ferry & Greenwich Meridian

Turning right from our marina along the Old River Nene this route passes Floods Ferry (long term moorings only) and crosses the Greenwich Meridian. Beyond this is Floods Ferry Junction where the Old Nene forks left and our route turns right down Whittlesey Dyke.

benwick nene river cruise

After three miles cruising you approach Angle Corner where to the left Bevill’s Leam joins our route and opposite on the right is the entrance to the Twenty Foot River. Continuing straight on you find the dyke narrows as the outskirts of Whittlesey are approached. Ashline Lock (a boater operated manual lock) marks your arrival at this historic market town and above the lock there are visitor moorings next to the Leisure Centre.

Peterborough Approach

Soon after leaving the Whittlesey moorings there is a bridge on a 90° bend which even an experienced boater must treat with respect. You then pass two of the many pubs in the town before heading through some more open country and travelling beside a deep brick pit. Brick making has long been an industry of the town and of much of the area east of Peterborough although most of the clay pits are now worked out. On the approach to Peterborough the cathedral can be seen clearly visible across the flat fields that lead to Stanground Lock.

Peterborough City

A short branch of the River Nene leads from the lock, with Stanground Village on the left and a nature reserve on the right, before we go under the railway bridge that takes us out onto the wide waters of the Nene. Turn left here and you will find visitor moorings along the length of the park which are convenient for the city centre.

As you cruise up river from the centre of Peterborough you will see on the right a series of open spaces and wild areas that form part of the huge Nene Park that occupies some 500 acres of meadows, lakes and woods and runs for around six miles alongside the River Nene. You pass the entrance to the channel that leads to the rowing lake then the sculpture park can be seen. The entrance to the park is served by Nene Valley Railway  at Ferry Meadows which has steam trains, 7 miles of track and 3 stops.

Two miles up river from Peterborough Bridge is Orton Lock the first of a series of Guillotine locks that are a feature of the Nene. The Guillotine gate is electrically operated by boaters but the top mitre doors (gates) must be manually operated. Above the lock are the moorings of the Peterborough Yacht Club and then you come to the entrance to Ferry Meadows Country Park which is on the left just before the footbridge that crosses the River Nene. A short connecting channel will take you into Orton Lake, one of the many lakes in the park. Head towards the left-hand side of the lake and you will see the pontoons provided for visitor moorings.

Ferry trips across St. Johns River will return Tuesday after three-week pause

ferry meadows boat trip

The St. Johns River Ferry will resume operations Tuesday morning after being out of service the past three weeks for vessel maintenance and ferry landing upgrades.

What hours does the ferry operate?

The boat runs from 6 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. between Mayport and Fort George Island for five-minute trips across the St. Johns River. Operating seven days a week, the boat departs every half hour. The schedule departure time on the Mayport side is on the hour and on the half hour. For the Fort George Island side, the scheduled departure is quarter past the hour and quarter until the top of the hour.

Out of service: When and how long will the St. Johns River Ferry be shut down this time?

Need for two: JTA will seek grant to buy second ferry boat

What work was done during the service suspension?

In addition to scheduled preventive maintenance of the boat, JTA says it did work on catwalk access and mooring bollards at Fort George Island along with work on warehouse equipment and systems, signage, bridge gantry preservation and refurbishment and replacement of approach slabs.

What does it cost to use the ferry?

The cost varies from $1 per one-way trip for pedestrians and bicyclists to $16 on weekends for trucks, buses and RVs. For cars, the weekday fare is $7 and the weekend fare is $8. The cost is less through the MyJTA app and riders also can purchase ticket booklets.

What plans are there for to add a second boat to service?

JTA will seek a $30 million grant for purchasing a second ferry that would eliminate the annual break in ferry trips. That second ferry might be electric-powered, a significant change from the diesel-fueled boat that has bee in use for decades.

Where can I get more information about the ferry service?

The JTA provides information about schedules and fares on its web site at ferry.jtafla.com .

Moscow River Boat Trips

Moscow river boat trips are your definite choice when it’s hot, sunny, and you’ve seen the city in any other way possible!

Just imagine how cool it is to slowly drift across the beautiful  Moscow river banks, enjoying Moscow from a totally different prospective!

The air is fresh, no exhaust pipes around – it’s just you and the city!

The Kremlin, Gorky Park, Cathedral of Christ the Savior and other Moscow sights are yours – no traffic, hassle and crowds around. Once you’re done, you can get off at the nearest stop and continue your tour by feet.

OK, there are basically two types of Moscow river boat trips. One is called “river tram” or “river shuttle”, and the other is more like a cruise.

The shuttle follows a typical route through Moscow river, from  “Kievskiy Vokzal” to  “Novospasskiy bridge” and back, with several stops in the way. The cruise boats usually do not stop, and the entire trip make take up to two hours.

There are many cruise boat operators, each one has got its own route. You’ll probably travel outside Moscow to enjoy the stunning views of Moscow region, but you’d better check it with the cashier.

Don’t worry – anything will do, especially if you’re in for the first time. You should only check what type of boat it is – if you wish to see Moscow, you probably don’t want to go far outside, and the reverse is true as well. Take your local friends – nothing beats a good company AND they’ll help you out!

Want to know what to expect? Let’s look at the typical Moscow river boat trips route:

Very pretty by itself, Kievskiy Vokzal was reconstructed a couple of years ago. A starting point for most Moscow river boat trips, it’s got great exterior and “Evropeiskiy” shopping mall right next to it. River cruise or no river cruise, but you should really spend there some time. No better place for Moscow shopping!

See the MSU?

Ahh, such a beauty! In summer, the hills turn entirely green, and you can clearly see the building of Moscow State University rising straight to the skies. You’ll also see grass-covered beaches filled with bathing Muscovites. Yep, the summer in “cold Russia” can be really hot!

…and if you pay attention, you will also see the towers of Moscow Inetrnational Business Center rising up to the skies from one of the banks.

Continuing with Moscow river boat trips. Not much to say about “Frunzenskaya Quay” except it’s a home to several Soviet-style buildings, the biggest one being the Joint Staff. Boy it’s huge! In addition, there’re several “swimming restaurants” that’ll serve you a great meal!

The place was full with all kinds of rides. Now many of them are removed.

This place is Russian “Disneyland”. Don’t be surprised when you see a space shuttle – it’s called “Buran”, and was the first of a kind in Russia.

Unfortunately, it was also the last one. When  Perestroika began, the Soviet space program was severely cut, and “Buran” returned to hangar to be utilized later.

Don’t worry, you can take a picture of it – Russian KGB is on vacation, too!

Many say it destroys the looks of the city. Well, it’s really big for sure! Stunning when you see it for the first time. Can’t say I’m a big fan of it, but then again – I ain’t a fan of Peter the Great, either, but that’s a long story. In short – definitely take a couple of pictures!

Sounds soooo communist, right? Don’t mind the name – these guys make the tastiest Russian chocolate I’ve ever eaten! Nothing compares to “Alenka” chocolate bar – it’s that little girl in a headscarf on the banner. Tell me about addiction!

Built in 1860, it was lately destroyed by comrade Stalin. To show everyone the “new”, “free” Russia, Bolsheviks built a swimming pool right on the ruins of the church! Fortunately, the new Russian government allowed its restoration, and the cathedral was re-opened in 2000. It’s the tallest Eastern Orthodox church in the world!

Passing the Kremlin

So magnificent, so…Russian! You’ll see the State Kremlin Palace, Archangelsky Cathedral and even Ivan the Great Bell Tower!

You’ll also have a glance at St. Basil’s Cathedral, but that’s just a sneak preview. To really see the Kremlin, set your foot on the shore, check your camera batteries and storage, take a deep breath and walk inside. It’s an entire  adventure!

I haven’t covered all of the sights. There’s more to Moscow river boat trips than you read, but that will be our little surprise.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

ferry meadows boat trip

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

ferry meadows boat trip

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

ferry meadows boat trip

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

ferry meadows boat trip

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

ferry meadows boat trip

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

ferry meadows boat trip

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

ferry meadows boat trip

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
