The United Kingdom is one of the most popular overseas destinations for Indians for tourism, study, employment, or even medical treatment. A UK tourist visa for Indians is referred to as a UK Standard Visitor Visa which allows its holder to enter and stay in the UK for up to 60 months. • Long term standard visitor visa: If you visit the UK regularly, you can apply for a long-term Standard Visitor Visa valid for 2, 5 and 10 years. With this visa, you can stay in the UK for a maximum of 6 months on each visit.

• You will have to prove that you will leave the UK before the validity of your visa expires.
• You have sufficient funds to support your trip to the United Kingdom and your return.
• You will not live in the UK for extended periods during your recurrent visits.
• For a long-term visa, the purpose of those visits would remain the same over its duration. 
• You need to submit proof of any activities you will participate in, which should be in compliance with the framework of the permitted activities.
• To study, take an exam or do placement.
• To visit as an academic, senior doctor or dentist.
• For medical treatments.

Documents required for a UK tourist visa application

Here is the list of documents required for a UK tourist visa application:

• Filled UK tourist visa application form VAF1A.
• Two recent photographs meeting the UK visa photo requirement guidelines. 
• Passport valid for three months beyond the date of your departure from the UK, with at least one blank page.
• Financial statement to prove you have sufficient funds to cover your trip and living cost in the UK. 
• ID information and living address of the person paying your travel costs.
• ID and passport number of any friend or relative living in the UK. 
• Detailed travel itinerary that contains your travel plan such as onward and backward dates, places you will be visiting, meeting agenda, festival agenda, etc. 
• Biometric information, your fingerprints and digital photograph.
• Letter or invitation from the host.
• Recognized certificate of English language. 

Based on the purpose of your visit, you will have to submit additional documents to apply for a UK tourist visa from India.

How to apply for UK tourist visa from India

You can apply for a UK visa online and in person. Follow the steps mentioned below:

• Fill the application form: Visit the gov.uk and complete your UK tourist/ visit visa application form. Make sure the information you provide is correct. You will have to visit a visa application centre (VAC) at an allotted date and time to submit your biometric information.
• Pay the application fee: After completing the application form, you have to pay the UK visa fees using a valid debit or credit card. 
• Book your interview appointment: You have to book an appointment for a UK visa interview. Book a date when you will be available. Before attending the interview, you must practice the UK visa interview question and answers .
• Collect your documents: Collect your documents including a printed copy of your appointment letter, your UK visa fee receipt and your passport for visa interview.
• Attend the interview: Interview will be the final step of your UK visa application. Reach the interview center before time and carry all necessary documents.

In yet another move to ease travel between India and the United Kingdom, Indians travelling to Britain and other parts of the UK will now get their UK visas within 15 days, as confirmed by the British High Commissioner to India.

On December 16, British High Commissioner to India Alex Ellis took to Twitter to announce this news via a video message. He also congratulated the visa teams around the world for their great work. As Rishi Sunak took over the chair of Prime Minister of UK, it was expected that diplomatic relations between India and the UK would improve. Over the last few weeks, both the countries have taken measures to make visa issues easier for applicants.

However, Ellis also added that in some cases which are extremely complex, it might take longer to process the visa applications. He maintained that this will only make it easier for people to move to India and the United Kingdom .

India is a place that overwhelms your senses in the best possible way – nowhere else delivers quite the same barrage of sights, sounds and sensations as this continent-sized country at the heart of Asia.

It would take a lifetime to see all of India , let alone understand every nuance and facet of this nation of 1.4 billion inhabitants. But with a little preparation, you can learn to navigate the richness of this country, from its snow-capped peaks and velvety beaches to its historic temples and luxuriant palaces.

We've collated the top things you need to know about visiting India, but the journey begins before you leave home. Apply for your Indian visa online for a smooth arrival on the subcontinent. Read on for 22 more insider tips that will help make your vacation unforgettable.

1. Plan your trip around the seasons

India has a reputation for being hot and humid, but with beaches, mountains, hills, coastlines and plains all jammed into a relatively small geographical area, the climate is quite diverse. The southwest monsoon brings rainy weather to most of the country from June to September, but this is the best time of year to visit the high-altitude deserts of Ladakh , although depending on the route you take, you risk encountering landslides and floods.

In the far south, there’s also a milder rainy season from October to December. The ideal weather window for travel is from October to May, though temperatures and humidity climb to agonizing levels from March onwards in the run-up to the monsoon. If you find yourself in India in the spring, head to the Himalayan foothills for milder temperatures and good trekking conditions.

2. Get your jabs before you travel

There is no official requirement for vaccinations to enter India (although yellow fever vaccination is needed if you are traveling from a country where the disease is endemic).

That said, it is important that you contact a health professional at least eight weeks before you travel to ensure your jabs are up to date. Vaccinations for diphtheria and tetanus, hepatitis A and B, polio and typhoid are usually recommended, on top of childhood vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella and varicella.

Vaccinations worth considering for longer trips include Japanese B encephalitis, meningitis and rabies. Monkeys, dogs and cats can all carry the rabies parasite, and infection is fatal if untreated.

3. Take malaria precautions

Depending on where in India you are traveling to, you may want to speak to your healthcare provider about taking a course of anti-malarial tablets. For instance, northeastern and eastern parts of India, as well as the city of Mangalore, have a higher malaria risk.

Always take precautions to avoid mosquito bites – this will also help you avoid dengue fever, a viral infection that is transmitted by mosquitoes to humans. Sleeping under a mosquito net, wearing long sleeves and trousers in light colors, and using a repellent and/or a plug-in mosquito killer with a high concentration of DEET (diethyltoluamide) is advisable.

4. Get insured

Travel insurance is essential for India. Depending on where you travel to, you may find public hospitals are poorly equipped. Additionally, most private clinics and hospitals require payment ahead of treatment. Make sure you are covered for emergency evacuation and also for any adventure activities you plan to get involved in.

If you’re unlucky enough to be a victim of crime, contact the local police station or dial 100 or 112, the national emergency number. You’ll need to get the police to file a report (a “FIR" – First Information Report) to make a claim on your travel insurance.

5. Book ahead for busy times and festivals

India can get very busy from November to February, so affordable accommodation is usually swamped in peak season. It’s a good idea to book ahead, either directly with the venues or via booking aggregator sites such as Agoda and MakeMyTrip .

Also, book train tickets in advance where possible , particularly for popular routes. Tickets can be booked (with a fair amount of hassle) via the government booking site IRCTC or more easily through local booking sites such as 12Go or Cleartrip .

6. Plan your comms before you travel

Many things in India (including train bookings or ordering food online) get easier if you have a local SIM card. Bring an unlocked phone from home (or pick one up locally) and get a phone shop to sign you up for a local pay-as-you-go SIM package on arrival. You’ll need to bring passport photos and photocopies of your passport ID pages to complete the application.

7. Check your lunar calendars

While India officially follows the Gregorian calendar, the major festivals for Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Islam and several other religions follow lunar calendars and fall on different dates from year to year. Always check festival dates before you book your trip (bearing in mind these dates are subject to change); the Indian government maintains a useful online list of public holidays .

8. Learn local etiquette

English is the  lingua franca in most metropolitan areas in India, and you’ll get away with polite hellos, goodbyes and thank yous in smaller towns too. However, if you’re traveling in northern India, you can say "namaste" (I bow to you) with your hands together in a prayer-like gesture in front of your chest. Similarly, when meeting Muslims in north India, you can say "salaam alaikum" (peace be with you) – the correct response is "alaikum salaam." Most of the time, it’s the effort that’s welcomed over pronunciation, so don’t be shy!

Shaking hands is a standard business greeting between men, but outside metropolitan regions, men and women rarely shake. Only ever use your right hand. The same rule applies when passing things to people – including money.

If you get invited to someone’s home, bring a small gift (flowers or sweets are always a safe bet) and remove your shoes before entering. It’s polite to eat and drink what you are offered, even if you don’t really fancy it.

9. Dress modestly

Depending on where in India you are, modesty is taken seriously – especially for women. Travelers of any gender will have an easier time if they wear loose-fitting clothing that covers their legs and arms. Swimwear is only appropriate for the beach – although it is not uncommon to see locals swim fully clothed. To fit in, consider investing in a kurta pyjama (a traditional garment resembling a long shirt and loose trousers for men) or a salwar kameez (a long shirt, loose trousers and scarf for women).

10. What to eat and how to eat it

Many religions in India have their own dietary rules. Muslims avoid pork, many Hindus avoid beef, and some Hindus and Buddhists are vegetarian or vegan. Many Jains are vegetarians who avoid some vegetables (most notably onions, garlic and potatoes) and who try to avoid causing harm to all living creatures. These rules mean vegan and vegetarian food is often easy to find in India.

Eating with your hands is the norm in many restaurants, particularly in parts of southern India. Take your cue from other patrons in the restaurant, and remember to eat with your right hand. Mix rice and curry into balls with your fingers and push it into your mouth with your thumb. Some thalis (plate meals consisting of multiple dishes served in tandem) are served not on a plate but on a washed and flash-heated banana leaf.

11. Haggling is not a game of life and death

Haggling for a fair price when buying things – in street stalls and open-air markets – is a way of life in India. Although it can sometimes be a frustrating experience, losing your temper is extremely bad form – if you can’t agree on a price with the vendor that you are both happy with, politely decline and shop somewhere else.

The rules of the game are as follows. The vendor will quote you a price that is more than the item is worth, then you’ll come back with a counter-offer, working up from there until you reach a mutually agreeable figure.

The “walking away” trick may bring a few last-minute adjustments, but before long, you’ll reach a threshold that the vendor won’t go below. Throwing in extra items may bring a discount on the overall cost. Many travelers prefer not to haggle in places where the money goes directly to artisans.

12. Respect etiquette at religious sites

Religion is taken very seriously in India, so it pays to know the rules and expectations for visits to temples, mosques, monasteries, gurdwaras (Sikh shrines), synagogues and churches. Always check if you are allowed to enter – some temples and mosques are closed to people who don’t follow the faith. Mosques may also be closed to visitors during prayers or on Fridays.

If asked to do so, remove your shoes before entering any religious building, and be prepared to cover your head with a scarf or shawl. Generally, always cover your legs and arms (a sarong can be handy as an emergency cover-all). Some temples also ban leather goods, and many religious sites do not allow photography.

Avoid pointing the soles of your feet towards a person or deity – this is considered disrespectful. The same goes for touching any person or effigy on the head. It is conventional to walk around Buddhist and Hindu shrines in a clockwise direction, in a ceremonial circuit known as a parikrama .

Making an offering or leaving a donation is often expected – locals always offer something, but be wary of people waving receipts showing huge donations. Giving something is appropriate, but don’t feel pressured into leaving large sums.

13. Giving alms is common but up to you

The giving of alms has a long history in India, and foreigners can expect to be approached regularly with requests for money. Whether you give or not is a personal choice, but many Indians give on a daily basis, particularly when visiting temples and mosques. Be aware that some requests for money will be scams, and you may be able to do more good by giving your time or cash to charity or aid organizations you’ve taken time to research, rather than handing out cash.

14. Respect local social attitudes

India has complex social rules about respect for elders. Depending on where you are traveling to, older people are often greeted with the honorific “auntie” or “uncle,” and the ending ji may also be added to someone’s name as a sign of respect.

Outside bigger cities, India can be quite conservative when it comes to interactions between unmarried men and women. Also, most parts of India are conservative when it comes to same-sex relationships. Whatever your sexuality, it’s best to avoid public displays of affection.

15. Street harassment is unfortunately common

Although harassment can happen anywhere, parts of India are constantly in the news owing to a lack of women’s safety. Beyond long, unwelcome stares and persistent attempts to start a conversation, more serious assaults are also a risk. Groping is common in crowds (particularly during festivals).

Exercise caution like you would anywhere else, and remain alert. Never get into a taxi or auto rickshaw containing anyone other than the driver, and avoid walking alone in quiet areas, particularly at night. Decline offers of food or drinks from strangers.

If traveling by public transport as a woman, it's best to seek out train carriages and designated seating reserved for women. Wearing a wedding ring (even if not married) and using dark sunglasses and headphones can buy you some privacy on public transport. If you are being hassled, drawing loud attention to the intrusion may encourage others to come to your aid.

16. Keep track of security situations in India

India has seen deadly attacks by separatist and Marxist groups and Kashmiri insurgents. Monitor the local news and be alert for suspicious behavior, particularly around major tourist sites. Always check the security situation before traveling to Srinagar and the Kashmir Valley in case of flare-ups of unrest. Strikes, demonstrations and protests are also best avoided, as violence is a risk. It goes without saying but in the event of trouble, obey local curfews and stay inside – your hotel is probably the safest place to be.

17. Take the altitude seriously when hiking

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a risk when traveling above 2500m (8202ft), which covers most of the Indian Himalayas . AMS can be fatal, so always ascend slowly and take rest days to allow your body to acclimate to significant elevation changes. If you begin to feel ill while hiking in the mountains, stop, and if your symptoms don’t improve, descend immediately.

18. Familiarize yourself with local rules and regulations

India has a few laws and regulations that visitors might be unfamiliar with. For instance, taking photographs of bridges, the periphery of military camps and border crossings – or flying drones over them – is considered a serious security issue.

When traveling by plane internally in India, you may be asked to surrender batteries from devices in your cabin bags. Smoking is banned in most public places, and a few states also have bans on the consumption of beef – killing or injuring a cow in a road accident, even accidentally, can lead to violent reprisals.

To avoid sticky situations, take the time to research where you’re going, and talk to staff at your hotel or hostel or your B&B host for advice on things to be aware of.

19. Steer clear of drugs

India may have a reputation amongst travelers as a place to push boundaries, but its drug laws are strict. Possessing even small amounts of drugs for personal use can lead to a prison sentence.

Some religious groups are permitted to consume marijuana for ceremonial purposes, but that often doesn’t extend to tourists. You can, however, find bhaang – a marijuana mixture made with the leaves (rather than the bud) of the cannabis plant – at government-approved bhaang shops.

20. Avoid the tap water

The tap water in India is not potable. Drinking or brushing your teeth with it can be a fast track to stomach troubles – the most common illness tourists experience in India. Stick to purified or bottled water (or even better, purify your own to avoid contributing to India’s plastic waste mountain).

The water rule extends to ice (be wary of ice in drinks and ice cream) and to uncooked foods, particularly salads and dishes such as coriander chutneys, which may have been washed with contaminated water. When eating fruit, stick to things you can peel or wash thoroughly yourself, and be cautious of freshly prepared juices. Hot drinks are generally fine, so drink your fill of chai (milky tea, often spiced and sweet).

21. Watch local news to keep track of natural disasters

Some geographical areas in India are prone to natural disasters, and the risk is higher in certain seasons. Hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, for instance, often see flash flooding and landslides during the monsoon. Be alert to signs of natural disasters and keep an eye on the local news so you know which areas to avoid. Follow the Indian Meteorological Department’s website as well as their social media handle for timely updates.

If you are caught up in a natural disaster, follow the advice of emergency workers and try to leave the area quickly.

22. Spot the scams

India has a reputation for scams designed to separate tourists from their money, and touts and confidence tricksters can often be found where tourists gather. Get tourist information and make bookings at official offices, rather than “tourist offices” you have been led to by people offering unsolicited help.

If anyone steers you to a hotel, shop or other establishment without you asking, they may be angling for a commission, which will be added to the price you pay. Be dubious of claims that the place you want to go is “closed” – always check yourself to be sure.

Exercise common sense and be wary of deals that sound too good to be true – for example, the gem scam, where travelers are tricked into buying worthless gems to “sell at a profit back home.”

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London on Diwali, on the first day of his four-day visit to the UK to strengthen bilateral ties.

Mr Jaishankar arrived in London on Sunday and met Mr Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty , thanking them for their “warm reception and gracious hospitality”.

“Delighted to call on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Diwali Day. Conveyed the best wishes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. India and UK are actively engaged in reframing the relationship for contemporary times,” Mr Jaishankar said on X, formerly Twitter.

Mr Jaishankar is expected to hold bilateral discussions with his counterpart James Cleverly and other dignitaries, India's External Affairs Ministry said.

He is expected to attend an event at Lord’s Cricket Ground and address a Diwali reception organised by the High Commission of India in London on Monday.

The ministry said his visit would give a “new impetus” to the friendly ties between the two nations.

Free trade deal

Mr Jaishankar's visit is seen as crucial as India and the UK are engaged in hardball negotiations for a free trade deal.

The South Asian nation is the second largest foreign investor in the UK. Its exports to the UK stood at $8.15 billion in 2020-21, while imports were $4.95 billion.

India is expected to overtake its former coloniser as the world’s fifth largest economy by 2025.

Since Britain's controversial exit from the EU trading bloc, known as Brexit, London has been expanding its markets and signed Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), especially with countries in the Asia-Pacific region that are some of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

New Delhi and London have been negotiating the deal, announced in 2021 under the UK's Roadmap 2030 that outlines plans for the bilateral relationship and deeper co-operation on health, climate, trade, education, science and technology, and defence over the next 10 years.

But the nations have missed the deadline of the agreement that was set for the end of last year over differences in key areas such as tariffs, market access, environmental regulations, labour regulation, exemption of goods and geographical indicators among other issues.

Under the World Trade Organisation, geographical indicators afford protected status to products from certain regions, with famous examples being Champagne and Parmesan cheese. India has a number of geographically protected products including Darjeeling tea.

With the FTA, both nations aim to reduce barriers to imports and exports and could boost bilateral trade to more than $100 billion by 2030.

“The India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership was launched in 2021 along with the India-UK Roadmap 2030. The Roadmap is a commitment to a partnership that delivers for both countries. EAM’s visit will give a new impetus to the friendly ties between the two countries,” the MEA said.

India is a major exporter of ready-made garments, jewellery, petroleum and petrochemical products, transport equipment, spice and machinery and drugs among others.

Whereas India imports semi-precious stones, metal scraps and ores, chemicals and machinery among others.

The UK is also the largest European market for Indian IT services, as per the Indian government.

An organisation representing Indian students in the UK has launched a campaign advocating for the continuation of the graduate route visa that allows people to work there after their education. The campaign launched on Thursday is called 'Fair Visa, Fair Chance'.

This graduate route visa allows international graduates to work in the UK for two years after completion of their degrees. The process is under review by the UK government.

The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (Nisau) UK, which initially pushed for the visa enabling international graduates to work for two years after their degree, is concerned that the ongoing review could undo the progress achieved.

UK Home Secretary James Cleverly has tasked the independent Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to review the Graduate Route visa to ensure it remains "fit for purpose".

"The ability to work for two years post-graduation helps international students to earn money to help pay for their degrees and enable some to get valuable work experience as well as to continue to build strong links with the UK," said Lord Karan Bilimoria, Co-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on International Students and patron of NISAU UK.

ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Bilimoria also cautioned that reducing the Graduate Route could harm Britain, as international students contribute Great British Pound (GBP) 42 billion to the UK economy.

"Britain would be shooting itself in the foot," said Bilimoria.

"We are in a global race and have to offer post-graduation work opportunities that are attractive in competing with countries, such as the United States of America, Canada, and Australia. The fear of the removal of the two-year post-graduation work visa is sending out unnecessary and damaging negative messages around the world, and universities are already seeing a huge decline in international students' applications," he added.

Since the graduate route visa reintroduction for the 2020-21 group of international students, the Home Office of the UK has granted a total of 213,250 visas for the route.

DEFENCE OF GRADUATE ROUTE VISA

Indians have consistently been the largest group granted leave to remain, accounting for 43% of grants last year, reported PTI.

Arora expressed concern that without this pathway, university finances may collapse, impacting both international and domestic students.

The NISAU UK has been invited to present evidence to MAC and plans to share insights from its annual India-UK Achievers Honours programme.

Recent figures from the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) show a 4% drop in applications from India to British universities.

However, the Home Office pointed to MAC analysis which revealed that the number of international post-graduate students attending institutions with the lowest UCAS entry requirements has increased by over 250% between 2018 and 2022, bringing its mantra of attracting the "brightest and the best" into question.

MAC's annual report, finalised before the review, was announced in Parliament at the end of last year.

"More fundamentally, we suggest that the government needs to decide what the purpose of the Graduate Route is. India appears to confirm extrajudicial killings in Pakistan

Defence minister’s comments after Guardian report are first time India has acknowledged any assassinations on foreign soil

India’s defence minister has appeared to confirm that the government carried out extrajudicial killings in neighbouring Pakistan , after a Guardian report on the alleged assassinations.

Intelligence officials from India and Pakistan who spoke to the Guardian had alleged that India’s foreign intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (Raw), had been involved in up to 20 killings of individuals in Pakistan since 2020, as part of a wider policy to target terrorists living on foreign soil.

Most of those targeted in Pakistan were convicted terrorists and militants known to be associated with Islamist militant groups that had carried out deadly attacks in India.

India has previously denied all involvement in the assassinations. But after the publication of the Guardian’s report, Rajnath Singh, the Indian defence minister, seemed to confirm that India did target terrorists hiding out in Pakistan.

“If any terrorist from a neighbouring country tries to disturb India or carry out terrorist activities here, he will be given a fitting reply. If he escapes to Pakistan we will go to Pakistan and kill him there,” Singh said in an interview to Indian TV news network News18 on Friday.

Singh said that India’s prime minister, Narendra Modi , had made it clear this policy was “right” and that “India has the capability to do so. Pakistan has also started understanding this.”

Singh’s comments are the first time that India has acknowledged any assassinations by its operatives on foreign soil.

Modi, who is running for a third term as prime minister in elections that will begin in two weeks, also alluded to operations abroad in a campaign speech on Thursday, stating that “today’s India goes inside enemy territory to strike”.

Indian intelligence operatives told the Guardian that the alleged shift in policy to targeting terrorists in Pakistan came in 2019, after the Pulwama attack when militants from the Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed killed 40 paramilitary personnel in Kashmir . Modi was in power at the time, running for a second term in office.

The Indian intelligence officials claimed that India had drawn inspiration from intelligence agencies such as the Mossad in Israel and from incidents such as the killing of the Saudi journalist and dissident Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 in the Saudi embassy in Istanbul.

Officials from two separate Pakistani intelligence agencies showed the Guardian detailed evidence from investigations into seven of these killings allegedly carried out by Raw, but said they suspected India’s involvement in up to 20 deaths.

The documents appeared to show that several of the killings were orchestrated by Raw sleeper cells mostly operating out of the United Arab Emirates, where impoverished Pakistani workers were recruited and paid millions of rupees to carry out the assassinations.

In other cases, Raw operatives are alleged to have recruited aspiring jihadists through radical Islamist networks and told them they were carrying out “sacred killings” of “infidels”.

The Indian intelligence operatives also confirmed that Sikh activists living in western countries such as the US, UK and Canada, who were vocal advocates of the separatist Khalistan movement, had become a focus of Raw’s foreign operations after 2020.

India has been accused publicly by Washington and Ottawa of involvement in the murder of the Khalistani Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada and of a botched assassination attempt on another Sikh, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun , in the US last year. India has denied involvement in the killing of Nijjar and, according to reports, an internal investigation blamed the failed assassination attempt of Pannun on a “rogue agent”.

Pakistan’s foreign office also responded to the Guardian’s report. “These cases exposed the increasing sophistication and brazenness of Indian-sponsored terrorist acts inside Pakistan, with striking similarities to the pattern observed in other countries, including Canada and the United States,” it said.

Ahead of Prince Harry's expected visit to the United Kingdom for the Invictus Games, a Royal family author has said the Duke of Sussex will have "some explaining" to do if he arrives in London.

There are uncertainties about if Meghan Markle will join Prince Harry as King Charles and Kate Middleton's cancer diagnosis news has already hit the Royal family.

On May 8, Prince Harry is scheduled to give a speech during a special service at St. Paul's Cathedral.

According to Royal biographer Tom Quinn, Harry is probably going to come back to the UK because missing the ceremony would highlight his tense relationship with Prince William. Speaking to The Mirror, Quinn declared that Harry will "certainly return" to the UK barring a significant upset.

The issues between Harry and William came to light following the former's remarks about the family in his memoir and Netflix series. While Harry visited the UK in February after King Charles' cancer diagnosis was made public, it's still unknown if the Sussexes were aware of Kate's health problems prior to her declaration.

What if Prince Harry skips the Invictus Games?

Harry's absence from the Games would indicate that "he doesn't want the awkwardness" of having to meet Prince William or "having to choose not meet him", Quinn stated.

He went on to say that it "would be worse" for Harry to not return to the UK than to work out a solution where he meets William for ten minutes or finds an excuse to fly back to the United States to be with his kids.

Even if he explains why he doesn't have time to meet his brother and father King Charles, Quinn said: “No one is going to be fooled by these excuses.”

How will Harry and Kate reduce awkwardness?

There are possibilities that Harry and Kate encounter with Prince William and Kate Middleton during the UK visit for the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games.

Quinn told to The Mirror that Prince William and Kate are concerned about whether Meghan would accompany Harry on his tour, since it could cause tension among the members of the Royal family. He emphasised that extensive preparation will help lessen the inevitable embarrassment.

If Harry avoids meeting with his brother and Kate, the Royal author said, “There will be more damaging speculation than if they try to patch things up just enough to cope with a short meeting.”

While Kate and William want to spend some time with their kids in a peaceful surroundings after her cancer diagnosis, it seems Harry's visit may bring much more tension and drama.

Meet the 'Seed Detective' who travels the world's farms to understand local food cultures

A rare chilli in northern India provides the ‘Seed Detective’ with inspiration for a book about remarkable vegetables and where to find them. 

The sun was rising through the dusty haze of a city waking up with a collective hangover: the result of a day of kite flying followed by beer and a night sky filled with ascending lanterns. Jaipur had been celebrating Makar Sankranti, the Hindu festival marking the sun crossing the Tropic of Cancer on 14 January, which coincides with its International Kite Festival. But now, with the party over, I began a journey that was to set me on a literary adventure I’d never expected to take.  

I’ve been growing crops pretty much my whole life and, ever since a chance encounter with a particularly wonderful pepper in Donetsk during the dying days of the Soviet Union, I’ve sought out delicious heritage vegetables that are part of local food cultures worldwide. And after seeing the incredible diversity of local fruits and vegetables crowding Rajasthan’s markets, I wanted to meet farmers growing the crops fundamental to regional cuisine.

Accompanied by my guide, Narendra Chitawa, we drove to the village of Begas, an hour west of Jaipur. The farms in this region form a patchwork of small fields — in winter, green with barley and mustard crops just coming into flower, others standing empty after the millet harvest. Giant stacks of straw the size of mud huts stood by stately neem trees. Alongside a bumpy track, rows of vegetables, including tomatoes, grew under billowing lengths of fleece as a protection against frost.  

The statuesque young horticulturalist Shankar Sharma — co-owner of the 15-acre farm with his sisters — came to meet us. Everywhere, marigolds were in full flower, woven among the courgettes, mingling with the tomatoes. An important source of Shankar’s income, they’re picked daily and sold in the local market. But it was the tomatoes that most interested me, and one variety especially, called abhilash. Shankar was especially fond of abhilash and thought it was the most tasty when cooked in a masala, and he’d been saving its seeds for many years. Naturally, I wondered if I could grow this variety at home. Would the fruits ripen late into the season when temperatures were low, just like they were that morning?  

Much of Rajasthan receives less than 500mm of rain a year, and the challenges facing farmers in the semi-arid areas near Jaipur are considerable. Winter, when farmers are busiest, is always dry. This means that the seeds farmers save have been selected and bred to flourish in a very challenging climate. Rajasthanis are passionate about their local vegetables, which locals describe as ‘desi’, and the visceral connection that everyone I met has with the crops they grow set me wondering if tales of the vegetables of Rajasthan belonged in a book. But it was to be a humble chilli that proved the catalyst for The Seed Detective .

My journey through Rajasthan took me to several wonderful cities, and it was in Bikaner that a group of university plant scientists told me that one of Rajasthan’s most culturally important vegetables, the mathania chilli, had disappeared from cultivation. Farmers had chosen to grow modern varieties promising greater yields, resulting in accidental cross-pollination, which had changed mathania’s appearance and taste. Prized for its fruity, gently spicy qualities, the chilli had been a fundamental part of Rajasthani cuisine for hundreds of years. Now, the original was believed lost. But I wasn’t convinced.

It was once again time to take a bumpy ride in the back of an old Jeep, a good hour’s drive north of the great fortress city of Jodhpur. I knew that any survivors would have to be grown in isolation, and luck was on my side.

This is a beautiful part of the world; rolling hills sparse in vegetation contain small fields lined by drystone walls. Within this neatly managed landscape, all manner of local crop varieties grow. At a small enclosure of beautiful Rajasthani sheep next to a homestead of three whitewashed, round cob buildings, the farmer, Ashi Devi, had a small pile of just-harvested chillies in one corner. Could these be the famous mathania I was looking for?

My guide, Pritam Singh, suggested we taste and see — quickly assuring me that what we were now savouring was indeed the real thing. And it was then that I knew that I had to tell him not only the story of the mathania chilli, but also where so many of my favourite vegetables had come from. The story of vegetables that began as wild indigenous plants to become much-loved cultivated crops — their journeys from untamed parent to domesticated child.

Major UK train station is getting a giant new Wetherspoons pub this summer

If you commute into London Waterloo each day, you might soon notice something very different at the train station , as a big change is being made this summer .

The station, which is thought to be used by an average of 250,000 people each day, is getting a new addition.

As well as the numerous shops, cafes, and restaurants , already on offer at the station, a brand new Wetherspoons pub is set to open, meaning you’ll be able to grab a cheeky pint after a long day at work before heading home.

The Lion and the Unicorn is set to open in The Sidings at Waterloo, with the popular pub chain investing a whopping £2.5 million into its development.

The name of the new Spoons is inspired by the Festival of Britain which was held at the nearby South Bank in 1951 and showcased British achievements in the arts, architecture, science and technology.

No official opening date has been given yet for the pub, but it’s thought it will create 120 new full-time and part-time jobs.

The Sidings is the ‘social side’ of Waterloo and features a number of other popular businesses such as Nando’s, Brewdog, Blank Street coffee, and a Lucky Voice karaoke bar.

Nearby Brewdog is an impressive establishment, which features a giant slide and a secret speakeasy bar inside, but the new Wetherspoons will also offer customers a unique drinking experience — especially if they’re a fan of trains — with floor-to-ceiling glazing offering views of the concourse. 

The pub will be across one level and will be serving up a full food menu from 11.30am to 11pm every day and a breakfast menu from opening to noon.

Tim Martin, Wetherspoons’ founder and chairman said: ‘We are looking forward to opening our new pub. We are confident it will appeal to a wide range of people and be a great asset to the station itself.’

Sian Evans, management director of LCR property developers, added: ‘The Sidings at Waterloo is set to become one of London’s leading leisure and entertainment destinations.

‘The new Wetherspoons pub will provide another great reason for people to visit.’

We’ll have to wait and see how prices at the newest London Spoons will fare against others in the capital, after two of the chain’s pubs were recently revealed to be the most expensive Wetherspoons in the UK for a pint, charging an eye-watering £7 for a Corona.

And this might not be the only change to Waterloo that’s made in the future, as ambitious plans to revamp the station and parts of the surrounding area were recently unveiled.

The proposal aims to make the station far more pedestrian-friendly by knocking out ‘barriers’ to movement and turning traffic-heavy Cab Road into a ‘piazza’ accessible only by foot.

Concourses would also be widened and unused underground arches would be converted into shops and restaurants.

The designs were drawn up by architects from Grimshaw, who designed the western wing of the station with its iconic curved glass roof, completed in 1993.

This comes after plans for a revamp to another busy commuter station were shared, with more than 2,100 people objecting to the proposed changes to London Liverpool Street.

The public, local authorities, Historic England and Westminster City Council all raised concerns about the project, with some branding it ‘ugly and uninspired’.

It’s not cheap either. Liverpool Street’s new look will cost £1.5billion, with part of the Victorian station being knocked down and a 20-storey tower built above the neighbouring Grade-II* listed former Great Eastern Hotel.

Total solar eclipse April 8, 2024 facts: Path, time and the best places to view

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality.

"Eclipse Across America," will air live Monday, April 8, beginning at 2 p.m. ET on ABC, ABC News Live, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, Disney+ and Hulu as well as network social media platforms.

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. To discover when to see the solar eclipse in totality or the partial eclipse in locations across the U.S. outside of the path, check out NASA's Eclipse Explorer tool .

Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.
