Pro-Palestinian protests spread to the campuses of USC and the University of Texas

Pro-Palestinian demonstrations continue to permeate colleges and universities across the country, as protests broke out at the University of Southern California and The University of Texas at Austin on Wednesday, prompting a strong police response and dozens of arrests on the campuses.

"There is significant activity at the center of the UPC campus due to a demonstration. There may be difficulty accessing that area," USC posted to X late Wednesday morning.

In subsequent updates, the school told people to avoid the center of campus, referred to as University Park Campus (UPC), and that if they were to come to that area, they would need to show their student IDs at the gates.

The UPC area was closed down later in the evening. The Los Angeles Police Department said it showed up at about 4 p.m. Pacific Time, and had arrested 93 people by 10 p.m. for trespassing, a misdemeanor offense. One arrest was made for assault with a deadly weapon, though the department did not specify the weapon that was used.

No injuries were reported, and LAPD will continue patrolling the area into Thursday, it said.

"The university is a private campus, and the group had been violating some of their orders, and it was a trespass at that point, and we assisted with those arrests," LAPD Cpt. Kelly Muniz said.

The protests follow the school's decision last week to cancel the commencement speech for valedictorian Asna Tabassum, who posted pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel content on her social media. The school said it scrapped the speech for safety reasons.

At The University of Texas at Austin, hundreds of people protested in support of Palestinians. University officers and Texas state troopers responded to the scene in riot gear, and arrested dozens of students who did not leave the area, according to NPR member station KUT.

"Arrests being made right now & will continue until the crowd disperses," Texas Gov. Greg Abbott posted on X . "These protesters belong in jail. Antisemitism will not be tolerated in Texas. Period. Students joining in hate-filled, antisemitic protests at any public college or university in Texas should be expelled."

UT Austin President Jay Hartzell commended the school and law enforcement for showing "extraordinary restraint," and said the organizers of the protest intended to violate school policies.

"The group that led this protest stated it was going to violate Institutional Rules," Hartzell said. "Our rules matter, and they will be enforced. Our University will not be occupied. The protesters tried to deliver on their stated intent to occupy campus. People not affiliated with UT joined them, and many ignored University officials' continual pleas for restraint and to immediately disperse."

For weeks, students at major colleges and universities across the country — including Yale, Vanderbilt, the University of Pennsylvania, New York University and Columbia University — have been protesting in support of Palestinians and have faced repercussions, such as arrests and expulsions.

House Speaker Mike Johnson visited Columbia on Wednesday and called on President Nemat Shafik to resign.

"I'm here joining my colleagues and calling on President Shafik to resign if she cannot immediately bring order to this chaos," he said during a press conference on campus, in which he was joined by other members of Congress. "As Speaker of the House, I'm committing today that the Congress will not be silent as Jewish students are expected to run for their lives and stay home from their classes hiding in fear."

Columbia's board of trustees said it "strongly supports President Shafik as she steers the university through this extraordinarily challenging time."

Located in the town of Tepoztlan, this beautiful Tepozteco peak is a delight to climb and hike through. Even though it is a steep climb, the altitude doesn’t factor in much for most hikers as the peak itself is a bit below that of Mexico city itself. Hikers who make it to the top are rewarded by a view of the pyramid that sits on top it and offers some views of some amazing valleys and vistas that surround it.

10. Parque Nacional Los Dinamos

Mexico City’s singular free-flowing river, Rio Magdalena, flows through this gorgeous ravine full of 26 km of hiking trails along with high canyon walls which are ideal for rock climbing. The trails here lead to dramatic waterfalls, freshwater springs and also luscious grassy riversides which offer excellent picnic areas. The park is made up of four areas and it is the third and fourth section here which is the least crowded. You can easily reach Los Dinamos using a taxi.

U-M to Trek to Harvard for CWPA Championship

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan water polo team (20-10) will get its postseason started with the CWPA Championship, Saturday and Sunday (April 27-28) at Blodgett Pool on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. The No. 2-seeded Wolverines will open play on Saturday at 2 p.m., facing the winner of the first-round matchup between Harvard and Saint Francis (Pa.).

• As the No. 2 seed, the Wolverines earned a first-round bye and will take on either tournament host Harvard or Saint Francis (Pa.) in the second round. With a win Saturday, Michigan would advance to CWPA Championship final on Sunday (April 28) at noon; U-M would play in the third-place game at 10 a.m. should it fall to its first opponent.

• Michigan owns a strong record against both its potential opponents, boasting a combined 34-1 record overall and going 3-0 this season against the Crimson and Red Flash combined.

• Senior Kata Utassy will look to make her mark in the final CWPA Championship of her career. She ended the regular season with a team-high 92 points (60 goals, 32 assists) and earned CWPA All-Conference first team recognition for the second consecutive season on Tuesday (April 24).

• Fellow all-conference first-team honoree Libby Alsemgeest will look to make an impact in the middle of the pool in Cambridge. The senior has drawn 108 exclusions in 2024, surpassing the school record she set in 2023. Alsemgeest also has provided a boost on offense with 32 goals which ranks fourth on the team.

• Goalie Alex Brown was honored with her second career CWPA All-Conference award, landing on the second team after a stellar fifth season in Ann Arbor. The graduate student boasts 267 saves in 2024 and crossed the 900-save threshold during the three-game weekend at Bucknell to become just the third goalie in program history to reach the milestone.

• Seniors Lola Ciruli and Elise Walker also were named to the CWPA All-Conference second team. Ciruli closed out her regular season with a flourish against the 14th-ranked Hoosiers, scoring twice and assisting on another to tally a team-high three points. Walker tallied two points against IU with a goal and an assist.

• Freshman Emma Gustafsson is poised to make an impact in her first CWPA Championship, ranking second on the team with 67 points including 40 goals. Gustafsson has proved to be an efficient scorer this season, converting on half of her shot attempts in 2024.

CPKC steam train to set off from Calgary on first-of-its-kind transcontinental trek

Steam locomotive Empress 2816's Canada-U.S.-Mexico journey will begin with a public event at CPKC's Ogden Railyard in Calgary on April 24.

History will be made by a historic locomotive when the first steam-powered passenger train to traverse Canada, the U.S. and Mexico in a single trip departs from Calgary next week.

The Final Spike Steam Tour is celebrating Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd.’s US$31-billion acquisition of Kansas City Southern in a friendly merger, becoming Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC).

Leading the journey will be newly restored steam locomotive Empress 2816, which was built for Canadian Pacific’s passenger and fast freight services by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1930 and operated until 1960. The original cost to build the 4-6-4 Hudson-type steam locomotive was $116,555.

“It’s really the most beautiful steam locomotive on rails,” said CPKC corporate historian Adam Meeks.

Although it’s not the largest or most powerful locomotive by North American standards, Meeks said, “The esthetics of it, and the elegance of it, are unmatched.”

Capable of a whopping 3,800 horsepower and reaching speeds of up to 145 km/h, Meeks estimates the locomotive ran about 12.9 million kilometres before it was retired.

These days, Meeks said they will travel 80 to 100 km/h due to the age of some of the equipment the locomotive pulls.

Terry Cunha, a representative from CPKC, said the tour is also a way of celebrating the steam locomotive and history of rail.

“There’s been a lot of anticipation by members of the community, enthusiasts, to see this locomotive come out, and we’re really excited that it’s finally here,” he said.

Restoration of Empress 2816 took two years of intensive labour, requiring expertise from current and past CPKC employees, said Cunha.

Meeks helped with the restoration process, along with Jonathan Morris and Justin Tracy. The three are on the crew of about a dozen taking the more than 12,000-kilometre trip to Mexico.

“There’s nothing easy on a steam locomotive, everything’s heavy duty, tough work,” said Morris.

Meeks said there’s some incredible technology they’ve added to the locomotive that was not required in 1930. “We’ve had to figure out a way to dovetail nearly 100-year-old steam era technology with modern operating requirements.”

The Empress was previously restored in the late 1990s, becoming part of CPKC’s corporate steam program from around 2001 to 2012. The locomotive was originally run on coal, then oil after its first restoration, and now it burns biodiesel.

“We’re excited, this is a big, big trip. It’s really something that’s never been done before,” said Morris.

“There’s two years’ worth of blood, sweat and tears into this, so we are all looking forward to just hitting the road.”

Sitting in the cab of the Empress prepped for a demonstration at CPKC’s Ogden rail yard Thursday, Tracy said there’s nothing like controlling the locomotive.

“The inputs you put into it — you turn a valve, you pull a lever — that has a direct impact on how this engine runs. There is nothing between you and the machine.

“Some people will say it’s almost like an extension of your arm,” said Tracy.

The transcontinental trip will begin with a public event at the Ogden rail yard in Calgary on April 24 at 3 p.m. and depart Calgary two days later, making a total of 11 stops across the CPKC network.

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of the Empress as it leaves the city, it departs at 9 a.m. on April 26, heading east from the Ogden yard.

The stops throughout April and into June will be: Moose Jaw, Sask.; Minot, N.D.; St. Paul, Minn.; Franklin Park, Ill.; Davenport, Iowa; Kansas City, Mo.; Shreveport, La.; Laredo, Texas; Monterrey, Mexico; and Mexico City on the final day, June 4.

Although the train won’t carry any passengers, each stop will have a public event where community members will have the opportunity to see Empress 2816 up close and learn more about it and CPKC’s history.

“For those individuals that are big train fans, it’s just being able to see a 100-year-old steam locomotive back in operation,” Cunha said.

A map will be available online for people to track the locomotive during the journey .

Rep. Torres: Columbia president “should step aside” if she cannot lead with moral clarity

New York Rep. Ritchie Torres, a Democrat, criticized Columbia University President Minouche Shafik, saying she has “chosen to surrender control of Columbia to an antisemitic fringe." Torres also said canceling in-person classes is “an admission of failure” by Shafik.

“If you cannot ensure the safety of your students, then you have no business serving as President of any university, let alone the alma mater of Alexander Hamilton,” Torres said in a statement. “What Columbia University needs is not an appeaser of antisemitism but a leader who will fight with moral clarity against it.”

He continued, “That Columbia University has failed its Jewish students so profoundly is an indelible stain on the soul of the institution. If the President of Columbia University cannot lead with moral clarity, then she should step aside for a true leader who can and will.”

Hakeem Jeffries: Antisemitic rhetoric "unacceptable and deeply disturbing"

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Tuesday condemned antisemitism amid ongoing protests at Columbia University and other colleges across the US. 

“The antisemitic rhetoric and intimidation deployed by some students and outside protestors on college campuses in New York City and beyond is completely unacceptable and deeply disturbing,” Jeffries, a Democrat who also represents New York, said in a statement. “Every American has the constitutional right to free speech and peaceful assembly in the public square. However, intentionally targeting Jews or any community on the basis of race, religion or ethnicity, acts of harassment and the use of physical violence will never be tolerated.” 

He also said the effort to crush antisemitism and hatred “is not a Democratic or Republican issue. It’s an American issue that should bind us all together.”

“We will continue to do everything possible to protect the Jewish community during this very fraught moment, fight the cancer of antisemitism and redouble our efforts to bring communities together,” Jeffries said.

Trump says Columbia University made “grave mistake” making classes hybrid amid tense demonstrations on campus

Former President Donald Trump said Tuesday he thought leadership at Columbia University made a “grave mistake” in making all classes at its main campus hybrid until the spring semester ends after days of tense demonstrations on campus.

“What's going on with the colleges where they're closing Columbia now? I mean, it's just crazy. Columbia should gain a little strength, a little courage and keep their school open. It's crazy. Because that means the other side wins,” Trump told reporters at Trump Tower as he took a few questions after greeting former Japanese prime minister Taro Aso.

 Trump said, “The people running Columbia have made a grave mistake.”

Barnard students on suspension "no longer have access" to most campus buildings

Barnard President Laura Rosenbury confirmed in a statement yesterday that students on interim suspension "no longer have access to most Barnard buildings."

She said Dean Leslie Grinage is "helping students find alternative housing arrangements when needed."

The statement also said Barnard will consider lifting suspensions for students who have an otherwise clean record and commit to a probationary period.

A Barnard student alleged on X that she was suspended and evicted from housing.

House Speaker Johnson to visit Columbia University Wednesday

House Speaker Mike Johnson will head to Columbia University Wednesday to visit with Jewish students and deliver remarks and hold a press conference “regarding the troubling rise of virulent antisemitism on America’s college campuses,” according to his office.

This comes as pro-Palestinian protests have rocked major American universities, including Columbia. After days of tense demonstrations, Columbia University announced it is  moving to mostly hybrid classes  on its main campus until the end of the semester, April 29.

New York House Republicans have called on Columbia president Minouche Shafik to resign immediately for failing to crack down on the protests.

Students, faculty and staff at University of New Mexico protest in support of Gaza

Students, faculty and staff at the University of New Mexico started protesting Monday in support of Gaza and have done so peacefully, the university said in a statement Tuesday. 

On Tuesday, "members of our UNM community assembled at the UNM Duck Pond in peaceful protest," the statement said. Some people brought tents and sleeping bags, which is in violation of school policy, and campus police told them citations or arrests would occur if not removed, they said. 

"Police monitored the situation throughout the evening, without incident, and around midnight advised those who were remaining that their tents needed to be taken down or they would be cited," the statement said. "The tents were eventually taken down, with some people remaining at the duck pond."

As of Tuesday, there are about a dozen people at the duck pond with banners and chairs, but no tents, the statement said, and the university continues to monitor the situation. 

"The University is grateful to our entire community for modeling how protests can occur in a way that both upholds freedom of expression and ensures a safe and productive campus environment for everyone," the statement said. 

Students at Columbia University encampment say they plan to occupy until demands are met

Students occupying the West Lawn at Columbia University said Tuesday they are planning on staying there until the university meets their demands of divestment.

They are asking for a “complete divestment” from anything related to Israel, financial transparency into the university’s investments and amnesty from any disciplinary measures for students participating in the protests.  

“This is what we are here for – calling for an end to genocide and for Columbia to financially divest from the violent Zionist settler entity,” a student who identified themself as W told CNN. 

“We are putting our principles into action, and we plan to continue to do so by being here every day until Columbia divests." 

The group is in negotiations with the university through a legal negotiator, said student organizer Khymani James, who declined to share details of the negotiations.  

When asked about the encampment making Jewish students feel unsafe on campus, W said protesters try their best “to make sure everyone feels safe in the encampment," and their community guidelines “preach and hope for peace continuously.” 

Columbia University officials warn ongoing encampment is in violation of university rules

Columbia University officials warned Tuesday that the ongoing encampment is in violation of university rules — but school leaders have not given specifics on disciplinary actions.

“The safety of our community is our number one priority,” university spokesperson Ben Chang said in a press conference Tuesday afternoon. “That includes the safety of the encampment that continues to grow. We are watching this closely.”

University officials met with student organizers until 2 am ET Tuesday to discuss the situation, Chang said. “Columbia students have the right to protest but they are not allowed to disrupt campus life or harass and intimidate fellow students and members of our community," he added.

Chang said acts of vandalism, reports of harassment and discrimination have all been reported during the ongoing protest.

Officials will not release the specifics of student suspensions as “disciplinary actions continue” on campus.

Star Forward Peter Filipovity Joins NM State

Filipovity averaged 14.4 points and 7.7 rebounds at maine last season..

LAS CRUCES, N.M - On Wednesday evening, Peter Filipovity made it official that he will be wearing crimson and white come this fall. 

Filipovity spent a year at Utah State Eastern before transferring to the University of Maine and played three seasons with the Black Bears.

· Filipovity led Maine in scoring and rebounding last season with 14.4 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game. 

· On March 5, Filipovity put up his highest-scoring game when he recorded a 27-point performance against UMass Lowell while shooting 68% from the field. 

· Filipovity concluded his breakout 2023-24 season earning a spot on the America East All-Conference Second Team and a spot on the All-Academic Team. 

· Last season, Filipovity recorded nine double-doubles for Maine which led the team and was ranked fourth-most in the American East conference. 

· He spent his 2020-21 season at Utah State Eastern where he appeared in 21 games with seven starts while averaging 12.7 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds while shooting 58.1 percent from the floor. He also was named to the NJCAA Region XVIII All-Region Second Team that season. 

· Filipovity was also a member of the U16 and U20 Hungarian National Teams.

“The Forty Acres is home to almost 600 students and scholars from Mexico, and almost 150 students from UT Austin have studied, researched or interned in Mexico in the past academic year,” says Sonia Feigenbaum, senior vice provost for global engagement and chief international officer. More than 3,500 alumni live there, as well. “More than 200 UT Austin faculty members engage in research activity in Mexico, and we have more than 140 joint publications.”

The University further strengthened its ties to Mexico last fall by co-hosting the international book festival Feria Internacional del Libro de las Universitarias y los Universitarios (FILUNI) with its long-term partner Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), located in Mexico City.

“We have a long history with UNAM, 50 years of rich partnership and collaboration,” Feigenbaum says. “In 2021, we established a permanent office, the Mexico Global Gateway, to represent the university in the region, advance research collaborations, foster academic exchanges and connect with our alumni.”

UT has maintained a presence at the book festival since its inaugural event in 2017, but it is the first institution in the United States to co-host the weeklong event. The 2023 festival brought together more than 42,000 people from around the world.

“This is the largest university book fair in Mexico and one of the most important in Latin America that showcases publishing presses,” Feigenbaum says.

UNAM invited UT to be the guest of honor in February 2020, but plans were delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As international travel resumed, Texas Global assembled a task force and began the yearlong process of strategic planning and coordination.

Feigenbaum says the task force solicited input from colleges, schools and departments across UT, forming a team of nearly 30 faculty and staff members who contributed to the myriad topics the University could showcase at FILUNI. A total of about 200 proposals were received.

The event featured 140 UT participants, including President Jay Hartzell, Provost Sharon Wood, 11 deans, faculty and staff members, graduate students, performers and several Longhorn alumni. Together, they represented 23 colleges, schools and units, and 92 members presented as co-panelists in research symposia, discussions and live podcasts.

UT Press showcased 600 of its titles from its bookstand at the center of the venue, offering more than 1,100 volumes for purchase among the 20,000 available at the festival. Throughout the convention, the University highlighted UT Austin’s 10-year strategic plan, Change Starts Here, with research themes of technology and society, health and well-being, energy and environment, and arts and culture. UT Austin led 54 sessions that explored these concepts.

“We were able to really tap into the strength of our university to highlight our faculty working on critical issues that impact so many people and communities around the world, thus offering very dynamic sessions, as well as showcasing musical performances and exhibitions,” Feigenbaum says.

The conference also covered topics such as artificial intelligence and solutions to chronic poverty, bringing together different voices.

“It was an opportunity for our faculty who do not get to work together on campus to discover each other’s research and activities and collaborate,” Feigenbaum says.

Mexico is an essential friend to the state of Texas and a natural place to explore some of the research themes of the University’s strategic plan, Feigenbaum says. It’s crucial to use the expertise of students and faculty who share connections with the country in various academic disciplines, including Indigenous culture and languages.

UT’s libraries and collections hold important materials that demonstrate the University’s ties to Mexico, including holdings in the Benson Latin American Collection, a library devoted to Latin America and Latina/o studies on campus, as well as the Harry Ransom Center.

The Dell Medical School, which sent representatives to FILUNI to speak about health and well-being, in 2022 began the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) program in Puebla to look at global health. AMPATH opens a gateway for conducting research and training for medical professionals.

Texas Global has generated partnerships with institutions across regions in Mexico, creating new opportunities for staff and students to collaborate. FILUNI was yet another big step in advancing the University’s mission by fostering global engagement, research connections and partnerships abroad.

“Texas Global, think of it as this: the organization that drives but that also follows, that collaborates, and celebrates all of the work of our stakeholders across campus and around the world, demonstrating that we are a global institution,” Feigenbaum says. “What starts here changes the world, but we change the world together through collaboration.”

Through hands-on problem solving and encounters with women role models in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), AAUW Tech Trek helps girls see their futures while having nonstop fun. This one-week summer camp is backed by AAUW’s  research and designed to make STEM fields exciting and accessible to girls in middle school — the age when girls’ participation in these fields statistically drops. For many girls, the week long camp sparks their curiosity and places them on a path toward success.

Students protesting on campuses across US ask colleges to cut investments supporting Israel

Students at a growing number of U.S. colleges are gathering in protest encampments with a unified demand of their schools: Stop doing business with Israel — or any companies that support its ongoing war in Gaza .

The demand has its roots in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, a decades-old campaign against Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians. The movement has taken on new strength as the Israel-Hamas war surpasses the six-month mark and stories of suffering in Gaza have sparked international calls for a cease-fire.

Inspired by ongoing protests and the arrests last week of more than 100 students at Columbia University, students from Massachusetts to California are now gathering by the hundreds on campuses, setting up tent camps and pledging to stay put until their demands are met.

“We want to be visible,” said Columbia protest leader Mahmoud Khalil, who noted that students at the university have been pushing for divestment from Israel since 2002. “The university should do something about what we’re asking for, about the genocide that’s happening in Gaza. They should stop investing in this genocide.”

Campus protests began after Hamas’ deadly Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, when militants killed about 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took roughly 250 hostages. During the ensuing war, Israel has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip , according to the local health ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between combatants and noncombatants but says at least two-thirds of the dead are children and women.

WHAT DO THE STUDENTS WANT TO SEE HAPPEN?

The students are calling for universities to separate themselves from any companies that are advancing Israel’s military efforts in Gaza — and in some cases from Israel itself.

Protests on many campuses have been orchestrated by coalitions of student groups , often including local chapters of organizations such as Students for Justice in Palestine and Jewish Voice for Peace. They’re banding together as umbrella groups, such as MIT’s Coalition Against Apartheid and the University of Michigan’s Tahrir Coalition.

The groups largely act independently, though there has been some coordination. After students at Columbia formed their encampment last week, they held a phone call with about 200 other people interested in starting their own camps. But mostly it has happened spontaneously, with little collaboration between campuses, organizers said.

The demands vary from campus to campus. Among them:

— Stop doing business with military weapons manufacturers that are supplying arms to Israel.

— Stop accepting research money from Israel for projects that aid the country’s military efforts.

— Stop investing college endowments with money managers who profit from Israeli companies or contractors.

— Be more transparent about what money is received from Israel and what it’s used for.

Student governments at some colleges in recent weeks have passed resolutions calling for an end to investments and academic partnerships with Israel. Such bills were passed by student bodies at Columbia, Harvard Law, Rutgers and American University.

HOW ARE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES RESPONDING?

Officials at several universities say they want to have a conversation with students and honor their right to protest. But they also are echoing the concerns of many Jewish students that some of the demonstrators’ words and actions amount to antisemitism — and they say such behavior won’t be tolerated.

Sylvia Burwell, president of American University, rejected a resolution from the undergraduate senate to end investments and partnerships with Israel.

“Such actions threaten academic freedom, the respectful free expression of ideas and views, and the values of inclusion and belonging that are central to our community,” Burwell said in a statement.

Burwell cited the university’s “longstanding position” against the decades-old BDS movement.

Protesters in the movement have drawn parallels between Israel’s policy in Gaza — a tiny strip of land tucked between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea that is home to about 2.3 million Palestinians — to apartheid in South Africa. Israel imposed an indefinite blockade of Gaza after Hamas seized control of the strip in 2007.

Opponents of BDS say its message veers into antisemitism. In the past decade alone, more than 30 states have enacted laws or directives blocking agencies from hiring companies that support the movement. Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos called it a “pernicious threat” in 2019, saying it fueled bias against Jews on U.S. campuses.

Asked this week whether he condemned “the antisemitic protests,” President Joe Biden said he did. “I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians,” Biden said after an Earth Day event Monday.

At Yale, where dozens of student protesters were arrested Monday, President Peter Salovey noted in a message to campus that, after hearing from students, the university’s Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility had recommended against divesting from military weapons manufacturers.

President Minouche Shafik at Columbia said there should be “serious conversations” about how the university can help in the Middle East. But “we cannot have one group dictate terms,” she said in a statement Monday.

MIT said in a statement that the protesters have “the full attention of leadership, who have been meeting and talking with students, faculty, and staff on an ongoing basis.”

HOW MUCH MONEY ARE THE SCHOOLS RECEIVING?

On many campuses, students pushing for divestment say they don’t know the extent of their colleges’ connections to Israel. Universities with large endowments spread their money across a vast array of investments, and it can be difficult or impossible to identify where it all lands.

The U.S. Education Department requires colleges to report gifts and contracts from foreign sources, but there have been problems with underreporting , and colleges sometimes dodge reporting requirements by steering money through separate foundations that work on their behalf.

According to an Education Department database, about 100 U.S. colleges have reported gifts or contracts from Israel totaling $375 million over the past two decades. The data tells little about where the money comes from, however, or how it was used.

Some students at MIT have published the names of several researchers who accept money from Israel’s defense ministry for projects that the students say could help with drone navigation and missile protection. All told, pro-Palestinian students say, MIT has accepted more than $11 million from the defense ministry over the past decade.

MIT officials didn’t respond to an emailed request for comment.

“MIT is directly complicit with all of this,” said sophomore Quinn Perian, a leader of a Jewish student group that is calling for a cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war. He said there’s growing momentum to hold colleges accountable for any role they play in supporting Israel’s military.

“We’re all drawing from the same fire,” he said. “They’re forcing us, as students, to be complicit in this genocide.”

Motivated by the Columbia protests, students at the University of Michigan were camping out on a campus plaza Tuesday demanding an end to financial investments with Israel. They say the school sends more than $6 billion to investment managers who profit from Israeli companies or contractors. They also cited investments in companies that produce drones or warplanes used in Israel, and in surveillance products used at checkpoints into Gaza.

University of Michigan officials said that they have no direct investments with Israeli companies, and that indirect investments made through funds amount to a fraction of 1% of the university’s $18 billion endowment. The school rejected calls for divestment, citing a nearly 20-year-old policy “that shields the university’s investments from political pressures.”

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE STUDENTS?

Students at Harvard and Yale are demanding greater transparency, along with their calls for divestment.

Transparency was one of the key demands at Emerson College, where 80 students and other supporters occupied a busy courtyard on the downtown Boston campus Tuesday.

Twelve tents sporting slogans including “Free Gaza” or “No U.S. $ For Israel” lined the entrance to the courtyard, with sleeping bags and pillows peeking out through the zippered doors.

Students sat cross-legged on the brick paving stones typing away on final papers and reading for exams. The semester ends in a couple of weeks.

“I would love to go home and have a shower,” said Owen Buxton, a film major, “but I will not leave until we reach our demands or I am dragged out by police.”

Electric Semi Truck

Heavy equipment, first ever electric semi truck rides into mexico with sdg&e.

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) says the maiden voyage of their Class 8 heavy-duty electric semi marks the first time an electric semi has crossed the border hauling a standard load, marking an important milestone as the two nations move toward a net zero future.

The electric semi truck – one of 11 Peterbilt 579EV Class 8 trucks bought by San Diego-based Bali Express last year – made its first trip to Mexico carrying an unspecified load of goods through the Port of Entry at Otay Mesa, which connects Southern California to the city of Tijuana, Mexico.

Bali Express’ electric trucks will utilize SDG&E’s recently activated HD charging infrastructure to provide “reliable and affordable” electric freight options for medium and heavy-duty EVs crossing the US/Mexico border.

The SDG&E-powered chargers were partially funded through a $200,000 grant from the California Energy Commission’s Clean Transportation Program. That program has put more than $1 billion to alternative fuel and vehicle technology projects designed to improve public health while bringing both environmental and economic benefits to communities throughout the state.

Those sentiments were echoed by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria. “The historic crossing of this electric freight truck symbolizes San Diego’s commitment to innovation, cross-border cooperation and our binational community,” said Gloria, in a statement . “We’re not just reducing emissions, we’re building a cleaner future for people living near our border , and leading the way in international trade and environmental responsibility.”

Meanwhile, Executive Director of SDG&E Caroline Winn called the new charging corridor , “an example of how collaboration can create new and innovative ways to rethink how to move transportation systems toward electrification.”

The Peterbilt 579EV trucks have an 82,000 lb. GCWR and is powered by the same 670 hp  Meritor 14Xe “epowertrain” used in the PACCAR Kenworth t680e that debuted back in 2022 . That system integrates electric motors and drive axles into a single unit, making it easy for manufacturers to electrify their fleets by maintaining existing (re: ICE) axle mounting hardware.

The big Petes have approx. 150 miles of range and are capable of fully charging their massive, 400 kWh batteries in about 3 hours.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has approved a landmark plan to end the sale of gas-powered vehicles by 2035. And, while California is just one state, it’s important to remember that, as California’s fleets go, so too go the fleets of Mexico, Arizona, Colorado , Washington State, and others.

If we’re lucky, the whole country will be electric-only well before then .
