Society headquarters are in the Kemper Residence at 412 N Main Street in the town of Madison, VA. This building is the former home of James Lawson Kemper, a Civil War general and the first post-reconstruction governor of Virginia.  The lower level houses the Society’s Museum.  The Residence may be rented for special events.  Usual operating hours are 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (except January and February.)

The Society also operates the Mountain Museum at Criglersville .  This museum is located at 1128 Old Blue Ridge Turnpike, the location of the memorial chimney and kiosks erected as part of the Blue Ridge Heritage Project. The Museum is open on Sundays from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (except January and February.)

Our newest property is the Graves Mill Park at 52 Bluff Mountain Road in the Graves Mill area of Madison County. There is a replica of an old Post Office and information about people who were born and raised in the Graves Mill community.  The Park is open year-round for self-guided tours.

The Arcade Building at 124 N Main Street in the town formerly housed the Society’s Museum.  The lower level is a conference room used for Society meetings and by several other organizations.  The second floor has storage space and a workspace for processing gifts to the Society.  Window boxes in front and the garden at the rear of the building are maintained by the Madison Garden Club.

Things to do in madison va.

I had the pleasure of traveling to Madison VA earlier in the month and let me tell you, it is a wine lovers dream! One of the great things about this Small Town Travel Series is that I’ve gotten to work with so many great local wineries along the way.

The Taste of the Mountains Festival was happening in downtown Madison while I was in town. This was a great local street festival full of crafts, art, music, food, and wine! I highly recommend visiting during this time next year – it’s one of the best street festivals I’ve ever been to. The streets are filled with tents that seem to never end. Everyone was very nice and the weather was great! So here are my ideas for “Best things to do in Madison VA.”

Our Itinerary:

• Lunch at Jenny Lynd’s Pizza  (some of the best pizza ever and I am a pizza lover)

• Homemade breakfast at the  Ebenezer House Bed and Breakfast

• Tasting & Lunch at Early Mountain Vineyards
• Tasting at Blue Quartz Winery
• Drinks (& Music if available) at Bald Top Brewing
• Dinner at Bavarian Chef

The Bed & Breakfast:

We had a fabulous stay at Ebenezer House Bed and Breakfast . The owner, Alan, was a great host and makes a delicious breakfast each morning. Alan lives in the house, along with his new dog “Jedi” and bird “Sweetie” (who can do more tricks than Jedi). The beauty of staying at a bed and breakfast is that you always get something unique – and our time at Ebenezer House Bed and Breakfast  was no different.

We had plenty of space to feel at home. Our rooms were located upstairs, which also offered a nice public living space. The back porch was another favorite location to enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. This was actually one of the larger B&B’s that I’ve stayed at in the past. The extra personal space was a great feature!

Mad Local  is an excellent dining option for a local, unique twist on American classics. They offer a variety of local beers and local wines, along with food that melts in your mouth. The hospitality was great, everything was very clean, and the atmosphere was very laid back. Mad Local would be a great casual dining option if you find yourself near Madison VA!

• Cheese Fries , topped with cheddar cheese, jalapenos, green onions, hardwood smoked bacon crumbles and black pepper ranch*****
• Dirty South Tacos , house marinated and Fried SVO chicken, smoked Gouda pimento cheese, honey BBQ sauce, lettuce, and pickled jalapenos****
• Steak Sandwich , steak grilled to perfection, topped with lettuce and smothered in cheese and a side salad****

Early Mountain Vineyards

Early Mountain Vineyards  is stunning in every way imaginable. The building, the decor, and the views are all gorgeous. There is no surprise that this is a very popular wedding venue.

In addition to wine tastings and wine by the glass or bottle, Early Mountain offers a small menu with big tastes. We enjoyed an Artisanal Charcuterie & Cheese Board along with the Classic Flight which offered a variety of white, rose, and red wines to taste.

They have many great locations to sit back and enjoy a day with friends. If interested in getting a table, I recommend making reservations ahead of time. Walk-ins are a better option if you are just looking to do a tasting at the bar. There also picnic tables where you can enjoy a bottle of wine outside.

Blue Quartz Winery

Blue Quartz Winery  is a brand new winery with a gorgeous tasting room and the outside offers even better views of the mountains. We enjoyed a tasting of the four wines that they are currently serving. Later, we decided to sit outside with a glass of their 2018 Viognier.

As mentioned, the winery is brand new. And for those who may not know this, grapevines take 3-5 years to mature enough to produce fruit that is acceptable for winemaking. Therefore, during this time they have been purchasing grapes from other local Virginia vineyards. Everything we tasted was great – and I’d love to go back and try their own wines once their own grapes are able to be harvested. They also make and serve their own craft beer!

Bavarian Chef

Bavarian Chef  is one of the most unique restaurants that I have ever had the pleasure of working with! As the name should suggest, it is a German-style restaurant. The portions and extremely generous and the sides are unlimited. During the entire experience, you truly feel like you are in a five-star restaurant in Germany. I could not recommend dining at The  Bavarian Chef  enough!

• Filet Mignon, seared and cooked to perfection*****
• Jumbo Shrimp Scampi, stuffed with lump crab meat****
• Green Beans****
• Potato Dumplings****
• Spatzle****
• German Potato Salad***

Conclusions:

You could easily make a longer trip out of a visit to Madison VA. Located right above Charlottesville VA, which is the home of 100s more wineries and breweries – there’s no wonder why the VA wine region is gaining so much national exposure right now. I will be traveling to Nelson County in a few weeks to feature even more wineries and breweries in this region. You could quite literally spend a week in the area and still not visit all of the things that this beautiful slice of Virginia has to offer!

So thank you for reading about what I suggest to be the “Best things to do in Madison VA.” I hope this inspires you to travel a little differently sometimes. Go somewhere new or eat somewhere different. The world is a big place, and sometimes the smallest regions have the most to offer!

Ebenezer House is a very fine place to stay, and unique in many ways. We have stayed there several times. The furnishings and gardens are especially beautiful.

Hood House, a few miles West on Wolftown-Hood Road is also a unique B and B, with moutain views. It is in the hamlet of Hood, nestled in the mountains.

In both places, you’ll feel totally at home.

Both are within easy reach of Montpelier, Monticello, Baldtop Brewery, and the town of Madison.

Solo travel, 11 fun things to do near madison, virginia.

There are so many fun things to do near Madison, Virginia; you may be surprised. When I recently stayed for a month, I was shocked at how places and activities on my ever-growing list of things to do kept expanding. It was astonishing since I’d never heard of the place before renting a little cottage there. But it ended up being an idyllic location in the Shenandoah Valley within just two hours of many premiere Virginia locations and attractions. Plus, there are several wineries, breweries, a ton of incredible history, and beautiful scenery.

That the land is beautiful goes without saying when Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, James Madison and Herbert Hoover all had homes in the area. It’s a place that holds its history dearly and still commemorates Hoover’s 1929 visit to the area yearly.

Downtown Madison is a short stretch of historic architecture from of 18th and 19th centuries, and many are now museums. Going past the extensive vineyards and driving down Main Street is like traveling back in time, but with enough modern amenities that anyone can enjoy the experience.

Here are a few fun things to do near Madison, Virginia or within a few hours’ drive.

1 Hike in Shenandoah National Park

The Shenandoah National Park runs through Madison, Virginia, and you can access it at a few different locations. The park extends along the Blue Ridge Mountains with Skyline Drive, a 100-mile scenic road going through the center of the 80,000-acre park. The park also includes a section of the Appalachian Trail among its forested features, wetlands, waterfalls and rocky peaks like the famed Old Rag mountain. The park’s elevation is 550 feet at its lowest to over 4,049 feet at its highest and contains over 500 miles of trails, many bird species, deer, squirrels and black bears. But the park’s history, the people who used to live there, and the 100 cemeteries they left behind may be its most unique feature.

2 Experience Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello

Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia home is among the most visited in the United States. As the author of the Declaration of Independence, he is one of the most revered writers in the country, if not the world. Much of his work and history has been preserved in his Monticello home , which is open for tours. Located in Charlottesville, Virginia, Monticello is worth visiting if you are interested in American history, colonial culture, or architecture. The house is up a long, winding green path with a majestic view for miles that just might make it worth the trip.  

Fun Fact: The house is an icon of American architecture and the only private home featured on the U.S. currency. It’s on the back of the nickel.

3 Visit Poplar Forest

You may be familiar with Monticello, but Thomas Jefferson’s retreat home, Popular Forest, is less known . This is the place, two hours south of Madison, Virginia, in Bedford Country, where Jefferson went when he wanted privacy from the many visitors at home. Architecture experts say it’s his crowning achievement.

Visitors can take a guided or self-guided app-based tour through the house and grounds, where they’ll see the main level of the house, the wing of offices, historical exhibits, the ornamental gardens and the enslaved dwellings. The outbuildings include displays about the archaeology, restoration and history of Poplar Forest. There’s a prominent feature on Jefferson’s enslaved community, especially the Hemmings family.

4 Go Spelunking in the Luray Caverns

Luray Caverns in Virginia is the third most-visited cave system in the United States, and it’s the only one with a stalagmite pipe organ – named the world’s biggest underground instrument by Guinness World Records. The Luray Caverns are a United States National Landmark in the Shenandoah Valley, just west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, less than two hours from Madison, Virginia. No matter which direction you drive from, you’ll travel through wide-open swaths of land, rolling hills and tiny historic towns.

General Admission includes access not just to Luray Caverns but other attached attractions, including a Shenandoah Heritage Village, Toy Town Junction, and the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum. There’s also a hedge maze, rope gym, golf course and other attractions to occupy families for hours, if not days.

5 See James Monroe’s Highland

The area certainly has its share of famous homes of former presidents . You’ll find James Monroe’s Highland just a few miles from Monticello. The fifth U.S. president built the original farmhouse in 1823 but continued to add to his “castle cabin” for the next 20 years. You’ll find a surprisingly humble abode and the smallest presidential home in the area. What it has, however, that none of the others do is a view of Monticello in the distance.

6 Tour George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Each year one million people tour George Washington’s Mount Vernon home, making it a top United States attraction. It’s just a lovely two-hour drive away from Madison, Virginia. As the beloved home of America’s first President and an American landmark, it is worth visiting. More than that, it’s a historically essential preservation of colonial America life. Not only is the original home preserved, but so are the grounds and the artifacts of the plantation community. It is also the site of Washington’s grave.

7 Visit James Madison’s Montpelier

You can’t go to Madison, Virginia, without stopping by the home of its namesake. The town was named for the Madison family, who you know though James Madison, America’s fourth president. His home, Montpelier , at 2,600+ acres, is enormous by today’s standards. It’s a great place to go hiking too. Eight miles of trails in James Madison’s Landmark Forest surround the property, while signage gives historical information about the land. Montpelier is worth visiting if you’re interested in American history or enjoy wooded hiking trails.

8 Stroll through Arlington National Cemetery

There are 600+ acres in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. where seeing so many uniform graves is stunning. Additionally, there are at least 35 other monuments and memorials in Arlington National Cemetery. They stand for past wars, combat groups and divisions, space shuttles like Challenger, specific demographics of people such as the Spanish-American War Nurses, battles, people and more. Here you will find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and see the changing of the guard and visit President John F. Kennedy’s grave with its eternal flame,  among other things.

They offer motorized tours, and the large visitor center has a wealth of information about the land and the people buried there.

9 Go to Washington, D.C., to see Monuments and Museums

The United States capital is just two hours from Madison, Virginia and has so many things to see and do you’ll want to make it an overnight trip. The city has hundreds of monuments, memorials, statues, and historic sites. Deciding which ones to see can be mind-boggling, but only a few are required viewing, depending on your interests.

Deciding which monuments and memorials in Washington D.C. to see may be easier than determining whether you’ll see them at night or the day because the monuments have a different look depending on the sun or moon above.

There are also 70+ museums in the city! These take significantly more time to visit than a monument, so you’ll want to choose wisely. The Smithsonian museums are world-class, and I suggest starting there. Not only is what’s inside the museum spectacular, but the architectural features on the exteriors make them all at least worth a drive by.

10 Visit the Historic Triangle: Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg

About two hours east of Madison, Virginia, you’ll find the historic triangle of three towns. Each is worth the trip.

Historic Jamestown is where the Powhatan Indians lived for centuries before the English arrived in 1607 and established the first British colony. It’s the actual archeological site of the original city. Here, you’ll find predominantly outdoor exhibits and spaces. You’ll be able to see archeologists working to uncover the old town and many recreated displays. The archeology takes you through the history of the Virginia colony through 1699.

Yorktown, Virginia, is famous as the site of the last major battle of the Revolutionary War. It’s where Cornwallis’ British Army surrendered, and George Washington won the American Revolution. There you’ll see the battlements, surrender field, the ramparts where the boy waved the white flag, and the Moore house where they agreed to the conditions of freedom. The area has so much history of the battles conducted by George Washington, Marquise de Lafayette, Alexander Hamilton, and others.

Colonial Williamsburg is famous as being the first capital of the Virginia Colony in 1699 and was home to many notable people in early American history. In Williamsburg, most businesses and houses are original, restored or recreated to look still as the town would have looked hundreds of years ago. As Virginia’s capital until 1780, it was the center of education and culture. All the famous people of the day, such as George Washington, Patrick Henry, James Madison, George Wythe, Peyton Randolph, and others, have walked its streets.

11 Wineries and Breweries

The region around Madison, Virginia, is known for wineries and a few great breweries. You can spend days visiting each of them, doubling as an excellent road trip among spectacular scenery. Much of the wine country can is along the Monticello Wine Trail , inspired by Thomas Jefferson’s vision for the region. Here are just a few worth visiting.

• Early Mountain Vineyards , 6109 Wolftown Hood Road, was right down the street from me. It has a great outdoor space with spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, especially at sunset.
• Fieldstone Trails, 2585 S F T Valley Rd, is a winery that offers horseback rides.
• Bald Top Brewing , 1830 Thrift Road, is a historic farm brewery that uses hops and plants grown on its own farm.
• Blue Quartz Winery & Shotwell Run Brewing Company , 2585 S F T Valley Road, overlooks the famed Old Rag Mountain.
• DuCard Vineyards , 40 Gibson Hollow Ln, has seven acres of French and Virginia grapes.

If you like hiking, wine and breweries, history, architecture, and the great outdoors, Madison, Virginia, is worth visiting.

'Tourism is real money': Commissioner Ezell talks tourism, growth in Madison County

Ranking 11th in the country for travel spending in 2023, Tennessee continues to be a hub for tourism, and the Jackson-Madison County area is poised to continue being a top beneficiary, according to the state's commissioner of tourism.

As part of its "Breakfast Club" series, the Greater Jackson Chamber welcomed Commissioner of Tourist Development Mark Ezell Friday as its keynote speaker.

A member of Gov. Bill Lee's cabinet since 2019, Ezell emphasized the value of a visitor, speaking to both state and local success in tourism.

In a state where, in 2023, tourism brought in a record-breaking $29 billion in direct spending, Ezell's department operates under a $50 million budget.

With this at the forefront of his presentation, he hoped attendees walked away from his discussion with the understanding that "tourism is real money."

How does Madison County compare?

Visitor spending in Madison County totaled $312.5 million in 2022, up 7% from 2021.

As a result, Madison County households save an average of $842 in taxes annually.

"Look at that trend, we've had growth in Jackson and Madison County," Ezell said.

Along with places like the Legends of Tennessee Music Museum, he noted the area's "tremendous outdoor assets" like Chickasaw State Park and Pinson Mounds as top local attractions.

Per an announcement made in December 2023, Jackson is set to host the inaugural State Games of Tennessee, an amateur Olympic-style sporting event, in June 2025.

Ezell says this is a premier opportunity for our region.

"We're just so excited, first of all, that Tennessee has put in a state games program and then second, we're excited for Jackson to get to have that," he said.

"It's going to really mean a lot of people come, they'll spend the night, they'll visit those restaurants, stay in the hotels. All of those things are literally an economic boost as well as, branding-wise, Jackson has done a great job in sports and helping promote tournaments and things like that, so this is just going to be one of those that really boosts that even greater over the upcoming years."

Developing tourism statewide

Emphasizing the recreational activities that the Volunteer State has to offer is a top priority for Ezell's department.

He is leading initiatives like Bill Dance Signature Lakes and BikeTN, aimed at showcasing the state's 14 premier fishing locations and more than 50 biking trails.

"We will have interstate signs for people to go get the best bass fishing in the nation all under the name of Bill Dance Signature Lakes," he said.

Promoting cultural awareness remains another concerted goal for Ezell's department.

In development since 2018, is the U.S. Civil Rights Trail consists of 15 sites across the state and led by the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

"It's a really important thing for us to bring visitors to so they can have their hearts transformed and we can help change the world," he said.

• Give to JMU

Matt Roan selected as director of athletics at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – James Madison University President Jonathan Alger and the university Board of Visitors on Thursday announced the appointment of Matt Roan as the institution’s new director of athletics. Roan arrives following four years as AD at Eastern Kentucky University. 

“Matt Roan is an exceptional leader and rising star in the field,” Alger said. “He brings years of experience as a sitting Division I director of athletics, along with a sophisticated understanding of the rapidly evolving national landscape.  He has a firm grasp of our academic mission, financial matters and the many different aspects of this position and is a proven relationship-builder with constituencies both on and off campus. Matt’s strong passion for JMU and its potential shone through in the interview process.”   

“I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to join the team at James Madison University and for the trust placed in me by President Alger to lead James Madison Athletics. This opportunity is special as it represents the ideal intersection of what is most important to me personally and professionally. I look forward to working in alignment with the Board of Visitors and my colleagues as we strive for excellence for the institution and athletics alike. My family and I look forward to making the JMU community home, engaging with the many stakeholders who are passionate about the Dukes, and continuing with the incredible trajectory established by Mr. Jeff Bourne, outstanding student-athletes, coaches and staff.” 

Roan is a Virginia native with deep ties to the Commonwealth, hailing from southwest Virginia and attending both Hargrave Military Academy and Virginia Tech. He completed his undergraduate degree as a student-athlete at Southern Utah University and went on to earn a law degree from the University of Kentucky in 2012. He served as deputy AD at Southern Utah and Eastern Kentucky University before then assuming the AD position at Nicholls State University in 2016. He returned to EKU as AD in 2020 and will enter his ninth year as a Division I director of athletics when he takes over at James Madison in May. 

Maribeth Herod, chair of the James Madison University Board of Visitors, said, “I was delighted to speak with Matt and believe that he is a great fit for JMU.  His personality, philosophy and experience create great synergy with our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fan base.” 

A transformational leader, Roan made an immediate impact on the Colonels’ athletics program, lifting the department across multiple areas and, in many ways, paralleling the infrastructure in place at James Madison. Roan guided EKU and its 18 sports through a conference transition to the Atlantic Sun in 2021, while playing a key role in forming the ASUN-WAC FCS football partnership (now the United Athletic Conference). In addition to the transition, he reorganized the entire athletics construct, adding 57 coaches (including hiring five head coaches) and staff in four years, making significant investment in facility projects and increasing external revenue streams. 

In just four years, nearly every EKU program benefitted from some form of facility upgrade, highlighted by work commencing on a more than $40 million renovation to Alumni Coliseum, the home of Colonels basketball and volleyball. The department constructed a new beach volleyball venue and repurposed its Olympic Sports Training Center for soccer, cross country and track and field. Various other projects included: resurfacing Tom Samuels Track and adding new fencing and lighting, new turf at Roy Kidd Stadium (football) and Presnell practice fields along with new lighting, a new tailgating courtyard near Roy Kidd Stadium, a renovated football operations center with academic lab space, new turf and outfield wall at baseball, new Daktronics video boards at baseball and softball and upgrades at the tennis facilities. 

On the academic front, EKU achieved a 3.00 or higher department GPA in each semester during Roan’s time as AD and collected the NCAA’s academic-based revenue distribution in each year. In the last two Academic Progress Rate reporting cycles, the Colonels collected six and seven perfect single-year scores. 

Competitive achievements during Roan’s four years in Richmond, Ky. include:

• Men’s basketball winning the 2024 ASUN regular season title and finishing as national runner up in the College Basketball Invitational in 2023 with third-most wins in program history.
• Volleyball reaching postseason for first time since 2017 and participating in the 2023 National Invitational Volleyball Championship.
• Women’s basketball competed in the 2024 WNIT.
• Women’s soccer in ASUN semifinals (twice) for first time since 2018.
• Women’s cross country OVC Champions 2020-21.
• Softball OVC Champions 2021.
• Baseball ASUN West Champions 2022.
• Football ASUN Champions 2022 and automatic qualifying bid to FCS playoffs.
• Men’s cross country ASUN Champions 2022 and 2023 and second in NCAA Southeast Regional earning AQ to NCAA Championships (2023).
• 19 All-Americans and nine Academic All-Americans.
• 13 Conference Players of the Year and eight conference Coaches of the Year. 

Fundraising and external revenue generation took significant steps under Roan’s supervision with increases from the 2020 fiscal year to 2023 in total fundraising (112%), number of gifts (97%), number of donors (84%), sponsorships (29%) and ticket sales (115%). Notable highlights include the two first-ever naming rights agreements in the department’s history. As a result, the total operating budget for intercollegiate athletics grew by about 50% in his four years. Attendance increased across all sports, including men’s basketball leading the ASUN in attendance for the first time in 2022-23. Football ranked top 20 in the FCS in average attendance in each season. 

At Nicholls State, Roan spearheaded a 17-sport department for more than three years, again increasing staff and guiding the Colonels to significant competitive achievements. He hired four head coaches, including a men’s basketball coach who captured two regular season titles, and strategically increased coaching staff allocations for women’s basketball, softball, track and field. He also added a dedicated senior woman’s administrator, removing the position from a coaching role. Nicholls increased its sports portfolio by adding beach volleyball and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field during his tenure. 

The Colonels significantly increased academic scores across the department, eclipsing a program-wide GPA of 3.0 for the first time on record and increasing the GPA year-to-year in each academic year. Nicholls saw its first two programs achieve NCAA Public Recognition Awards with perfect multi-year APR scores (women’s tennis, softball). He also established the department’s first community outreach program, #ColonelsInTheCommunity. 

Competitive achievements for Nicholls in Roan’s four years included:

• Softball winning the Southland regular season in 2018 and tournament runner up three straight years.
• 2018 Southland football champions to win league AQ for first time since 2005, repeating as co-champions in 2019. The Colonels won a first round playoff game in 2018 for the first time since 1986 and repeated the feat in 2019.
• Shared the Southland regular season in men’s basketball for the first time since 1998.
• Women’s basketball won the Southland tournament and advanced to NCAA for the first time in school history, receiving votes in the final USA Today Coaches Poll.
• An individual medal winner in men’s golf in 2017. 

Roan collected the largest gift in Nicholls history, a $2.52 million donation to allow construction to proceed on a 20,000 square foot football operations facility. He revamped the department’s development program, the Colonel Athletic Association, overhauling the organization’s structure and leading to increases in giving levels and number of donors. Ticket revenue in football and basketball increased in each year under Roan’s watch. 

An active representation on multiple national committees, Roan currently represents the ASUN on the 40-member Division I Council and the Division I FCS Football Oversight Committee. He previously served on the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee and the FCS Athletic Directors Executive Committee. 

Roan served as Deputy AD at EKU from 2013 to 2016 and also held the same title at Southern Utah the year prior. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 2012 and worked in athletics at UK in football administration and as an academic tutor/mentor. Other previous athletics work included a year as a football assistant coach at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia, and two years of event support at Southern Utah. 

After graduating from Pulaski County High School in Dublin, Virginia, Roan spent three semesters at Virginia Tech before then transferring to Southern Utah, where the summa cum laude graduate earned his Bachelor of Science in political science in 2007 while also minoring in history. He was a three-time All-Great West Football Conference honoree (2005-07) and a two-time ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-District recipient. Roan was invited in 2007 to the East Coast Bowl and played in the 2008 Texas vs. the Nation All-Star Game. He participated in rookie minicamp activities with the Minnesota Vikings in 2008. 

Matt and Mallory Roan have four children, including daughters Gattlyn and Radley and sons Catcher and Shepard. 

Roan takes over near the conclusion of one of the most successful years in JMU Athletics history. The Dukes lead the Bubas Cup, the Sun Belt’s all-sports trophy, and rank 74th in the Learfield Director’s Cup. James Madison went 11-2 in football to finish first in the Sun Belt East and qualify for the program’s first FBS bowl game in its second reclassifying season. Men’s basketball set a program wins record with a 32-4 season as the Dukes won the Sun Belt and made an NCAA Second Round appearance for the first time in 41 years. Men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball each garnered at-large bids to the NCAA Championships, with men’s soccer reaching the round of 16. Swimming and diving won the Sun Belt in its first season competing in the conference. Cross country and volleyball each finished second in the Sun Belt while women’s basketball also finished as runner up in the SBC tournament. Six teams — men’s soccer, football, men’s basketball, baseball, lacrosse and volleyball — have been ranked or receiving votes in top 25 polls this year. 

Jeff Bourne announced his retirement as director of athletics in September and will officially exit at the end of April. The 2023-24 JMU Athletics achievements earned him one of five nominations for the Sports Business Journal AD of the Year honor as well as one of four honorees for FBS AD of the Year from the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.  Bourne aided the hiring committee in the search process with Collegiate Sports Associates serving as search consultant. 

“James Madison Athletics has had unparalleled success throughout my 25 years and particularly recently as our national brand blossomed,” Bourne said. “When we climbed to FBS football and the Sun Belt Conference, we believed that we would not have to sacrifice winning as we ‘leveled up.’ Now that James Madison is fully reclassified as FBS for the 2024-25 season, Matt Roan is the perfect individual to build upon that success and steer JMU to even greater heights. The university’s emphasis for this hire was pairing the pedigree of an accomplished leader with the fit and culture of our institution, and we feel that we achieved that goal to perfection in this search. Winchester business at center of county-wide debate

WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) - A small business in Winchester is the center of a county-wide debate. The shop is called The Crystal Coven, and some argue that its name and products promote witchcraft.

The Winchester-Clark County Tourism Commission says they’ve received backlash after promoting an event hosted by The Crystal Coven in their monthly newsletter.

“People who object to this believe that the tourism department should not be promoting any business that sells witchcraft materials,” said Clark County District 4 Magistrate Mark Miller.

Shannon Tipton, owner of the Crystal Coven, says she does not promote or sell witchcraft materials.

“I don’t claim a religion. I’m a metaphysical shop. I am registered as a business, not a church,” said Tipton.

Tipton says she’s being attacked by some members of the community. “Spewing the hatred and the misinformation about me and my business has impacted sales, and so if they can’t force me out by closing my door, they’ll force my sales because my patrons are now afraid to come in,” said Tipton.

The majority of public comments were made in support of Tipton.

“You don’t want to come, don’t come. It’s simple as that. I don’t want to go to church. You don’t see me up there protests in your churches, do you?” said an unidentified person in attendance.

“It’s almost laughable that we have to sit in this room and debate,” said another unidentified person in attendance.

Three people at the meeting spoke against the commission’s promotion of The Crystal Coven.

“I am here saying there should be lines on what we use our tax dollars to advertise and support,” said Steve Humble.

Some argued that a commission funded by the city and county should not promote Tipton’s store.

“It is spiritual in nature, and it is not a government-funded commission, such as tourism, to promote spirituality, such as Christianity,” said Clark County District 4 Magistrate Mark Miller.

“I don’t claim a religion. I’m a metaphysical shop. I am registered as a business. Not a church,” said Shannon Tipton, the owner of Crystal Coven, in response to claims that her business promotes religion.

Outside of the meeting, the sidewalk was filled with people there to support Tipton and her business.

“This is the modern-day equivalent of burning someone at the stake,” said Loona Wolf.

“The fact that she’s getting harassed over something like this, it’s just heartbreaking,” said Lauren Woodring.

The Winchester-Clark County Tourism Commission says it’s not their job to judge whether or not an event is Christian.

The public portion of Tuesday’s meeting was mostly public comment. No definitive answer was reached as to what the commission can and can not promote.

Mom reunited with kids after husband arrested in Turks and Caicos for ammunition

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (Gray News) - An Oklahoma mom had an emotional reunion with her two kids Tuesday, but one family member was missing.

Valerie Watson has spent more than a week out of the country. She and her husband Ryan were held in Turks and Caicos after bullets were inadvertently left in their luggage after a hunting trip.

It’s a serious offense on those islands, with a minimum prison sentence of 12 years. Officials released Valerie Watson on Monday but locked up her husband.

“We know that God’s still working, and he’s working through us,” Valerie Watson said.

“I’ve been thinking about this moment for a while,” she said of being reunited with her kids. “I didn’t know when it was going to happen. I was prepared to also be arrested yesterday.”

The Watsons have some help in their fight. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt sent a letter to government officials in Turks and Caicos on April 16. He calls Watson “an avid outdoorsman,” arguing the ammunition was “an inadvertent oversight, not an intentional attempt to break the law. "

The office of Sen. Markwayne Mullin said they’ve been in touch with the family and are doing everything they can to help.

Valerie Watson said she’s been anticipating embracing her children.

“I don’t even have words to describe it. Just getting to hold them again, it just filled my momma heart. It made me so happy. It just gives me a lot of comfort to know that I get to be here with them now. But my wife heart is still breaking because Ryan’s not with me,” she said.

Valerie Watson said that there’s still work to be done to get her family back together.

“Routine has never sounded better, but I know our life is different. And our goal is to get Ryan home because we can’t be a family without Dad,” she said.
