  • Press Releases

Having been confined to their home shores for two years, Jeremy, James and Richard are finally back on the road for their first post pandemic road trip. This time the boys head for the icy wastes of the Scandinavian Arctic Circle with their three all time favourite rally bred cars to help get them through the snow. Their Arctic Circle journey begins at the Norwegian coast, on the dramatic Lofoten Islands peninsula, with the world’s most remote and spectacular football pitch as their start line. From there they must cross Europe’s Last Great Wilderness, a trek that takes them through the tops of Norway, Sweden and Finland to journey’s end near the Russian border. What they believe will be an easy trip in their tough, rally bred machines, turns out to be anything but. Along the way they suffer heart stopping high speed drama, injury to their not so young bodies, and perilous danger on the frozen lakes. To add to their woes there is nowhere to live in the snowy wilderness so they must build their own homes, from whatever they can scavenge, to tow behind them on skis. Alongside the danger and the pitiful living conditions, there is much to see and do. Travelling through the breath-taking landscape they come across a secret Cold War submarine base where they are definitely not welcomed, and a race track carved on a frozen lake. Here they test their cars in an adrenaline filled race towing Skjoring skiers at almost 100mph behind them. Back on the road their mobile homes cause endless havoc that culminate in Finland in a calamitous unscheduled encounter with a ski slope. Then, near journey’s end, their mission is in danger of total failure. In between the peril and the catastrophes there is also plenty of laughter, as Jeremy and Richard literally start a Cold War between the two of them, of escalating ice based pranks. Their already impressive cars become even more amazing once modded, with Jeremy fitting a particularly lethal modification to his. The speed sequences are immense, and the snowy, icy scenery provides the most spectacular back drop for their first Grand Tour since the world opened up again.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick —air date, interview, trailer and everything we know

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick — the boys are back on the road for an icy adventure through Scandinavia's Arctic Circle.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

The Grand Tour boys are back filming in far-flung destinations as series five kicks off with a chaos-fuelled special episode — The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick — which is set in Scandinavia’s icy wilderness.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick begins in the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, where Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May set off on their mission to drive their pick of rally cars through Sweden and onto Finland, without ever dropping below the Arctic Circle.

Their stunning road trip takes in frozen lake racetracks and Cold War submarine bases, with plenty of pranks along the way that leave the trio on thin ice!

Here, Richard Hammond tells us everything we need to know about The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick …

Release date of The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick is available from Friday 16 September on Prime Video.

What happens in The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick?

After two specials filmed during lockdown, Carnage a Trois and Lochdown (both aired last year), the trio is all revved up to be back touring foreign climes. Tasked with driving through what’s described as ‘Europe’s last great wilderness’, Clarkson and co take viewers on a front-seat tour of spectacular snowscapes in Norway, Sweden and Finland.

There are challenges along the way, including pulling makeshift houses across Finland to the Russian border and speeding through ominous tunnels in an old Cold War submarine base.

"It felt great to be allowed back out into the world, but that’s not to play down the specials we shot in lockdown. We were really pleased with them," Richard tells us via video link. "They reminded us that it’s not all about the ambitious scale of a trip; it can be more about how we three get along and our passion for cars.

"But we do explore gorgeous terrain here," says Richard. "It’s described as 'Europe’s last great wilderness', and when the weather permitted, it was spectacularly beautiful. But it gradually became gritty and forbidding."

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

What cars will we see in The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick?

Richard tells us: "We figured rally-bred cars would give us the potential to cross rugged terrain, plus they're really exciting. I went for the Subaru Impreza because it was literally born out of rallying. James went for the Mitsubishi Evo, which has a slightly nerdier element.

"Jeremy, however, chose an Audi RS4 because Audi also made a rally car, but it wasn't that one," Richard continues. "It was more powerful than the others, though, so that made him happy. It's usually one rule for him and one for everyone else, but we’ve learned to live with that."

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

What else happens in The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick?

Despite often-perilous weather and terrain, as always, the petrolhead pals’ pranks and stunts cause the most chaos. Look out for Richard Hammond hurtling down a ski slope in a homemade house, Jeremy setting fire to his own car and scenes of skiers being towed across a frozen lake at high speeds.

But when James May dramatically crashes in a tunnel and is carted off to hospital, will it cut his trip short?

"I heard a boom from the other end of the tunnel and feared James’s arms, legs and head might have come off because he's not that well strapped together at his age," Richard reveals. "But the motto is, 'We're always prepared to leave a man in the field, if necessary'.

"We were concerned, of course, but on one hand you've got damage to a classic example of a spectacular breed of car, developed and honed over many years," Richard continues. "On the other, you've got possible damage to a gangly, blond-haired old man."

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick

Is there a trailer?

Yes, you can watch a trailer for The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick here. It’s hair-raising stuff!

What else is coming up in series five of The Grand Tour?

The boys have been spotted shooting in Europe but are keeping tight-lipped about details surrounding the next episode. Rumour has it they’ve filmed in Poland, Slovakia and Hungary. Can Hammond tell us more?

"No, I will be shot!" he laughs.

The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick is available from Friday, September 16 on Prime Video.

The Grand Tour Review:  A Scandi Flick

John Rabon

And we’re back!  In what seems like forever since the pandemic started over two years ago, we get the first real international Grand Tour adventure since “A Massive Hunt” premiered in December 2020.  The challenge this time is for Clarkson, Hammond, and May to pick out three rally cars and take them through the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Sweden, and Finland—all while staying above the Arctic Circle.  What follows feels like the most Top Gear-esque Grand Tour episode in recent years, full of challenges, pranks, injuries, and even a little glimmer of hope.

As per usual for these challenges, we start off with a bit of a row between presenters.  While Richard Hammond and James May have elected to do things properly, respectively choosing a Subaru Impreza and a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, Jeremy Clarkson appears with an Audi RS4.  The other two are quick to point out that the RS4 is by no means a rally car, and Clarkson rationalizes his way (see, “bluffs”) to letting it compete.  The point of choosing rally cars for the challenge was the belief that they would be suitable for the potentially rough terrain of the Arctic, though Clarkson seems to have opted for power and speed (once again) over what might actually work.

We’re naturally treated to a series of challenges during the course of the 90-minute special, the first of which is a speed trial down the tunnel of an old submarine base.  This is where the first major incident of the special occurs and amazingly, the one who gets hurt isn’t Richard Hammond.  James ends up speeding just a little too much and when he tries to stop, ends up spinning his car and hitting the wall at full force.  Fortunately, he’s not injured beyond a broken rib—but the car is seemingly another matter.  Having born the brunt of the impact, it becomes highly doubtful that it can be repaired and that James will be stuck in the Volvo 360 that producer Andy Willman procured as the dreaded “back up car”.

While James mends himself and the Evo, Hammond and Clarkson continue on, finding a workshop in which they can “upgrade” their cars in the normal Grand Tour fashion.  They are eventually rejoined by May who has miraculously fixed his Mitsubishi.  The next challenge involves skijoring, which is when a skier is pulled around a track, normally by dogs, horses, or a motorcycle/snowmobile, but this time it’s with the presenters’ cars.  Following a visit to a mining town whose activities are actually causing area homes to sink, the three get the idea to create their own homes that can be towed by their respective cars.  Clarkson fashions what’s essentially a tiny home, Hammond opts for a Scandinavian hut, and May’s ostensibly looks like an enclosed bus stop (May saying it’s so he can look at the Aurora Borealis at night).

On the way to catch their flight back to the UK, shenanigans ensue as they only can when these three are involved.  The prank war begins when Clarkson freezes Hammond’s car keys in a block of ice, which Clarkson claims to have tried to prevent the freezing by peeing on the ice.  Hammond then gets his revenge by pouring water over the Audi during the night, causing the entire RS4 to be encased in ice the next morning.  Clarkson ultimately has the last laugh after realizing they actually parked their mobile homes on a ski run.  He then unhitches Hammond’s shed from the Subaru and gives the shed a push down the slopes.  This is but one of two running jokes throughout the episode where the three of them keep camping in places they shouldn’t, such as the aforementioned ski slope and mistaking a traditional Sámi hut in a reenactment camp as an emergency shelter.

After the pandemic ended hopes for more adventurous challenges in Season 4, the Fifth Season of The Grand Tour is back to the format we know and love.  From legit scares to hilarious tricks, this felt much closer to the episodes of the past than “Lochdown” and “Carnage-a-Trois” did.  Certainly, those episodes helped tide us over during dark times, but similar to having to make your own fun when the weather’s bad outside, they just weren’t the same.  Now the people can rejoice again and enjoy some good ol’ car-driven mayhem, just as the petrol gods intended.

The Grand Tour A Scandi Flick Is Officially Coming On September 16

Clarkson sets his Audi on fire, May crashes his Mitsubishi, and Hammond doesnt have any trousers on.

We have waited a while to see the boys from The Grand Tour back on Amazon Prime. Their last adventure was in 2021 when they went exploring the unusual world of French car culture , but since then we’ve not seen them together. We have at least had Clarkson’s Farm, James May Our Man In Italy and Richard Hammonds Workshop. But, the former Top Gear trio are now back as Amazon have announced that The Grand Tour Presents: A Scandi Flick, is coming on September 16th.As the title suggests, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are officially heading to Scandinavia in what looks to be a rally themed special. They are now tasked with driving across “Europe’s last great wilderness”, and May looks to have brought a Mitsubishi Evo Lancer, Hammond a Subaru Impreza STi and Clarkson a…modern Audi, presumably it is Quattro referenced. Either way, we are going to delve into what we see in the trailer and prepare ourselves for this special which really is not far away. We can’t wait to see what they’ve all got up to on their latest adventure.

Diving Into The Scandi Flick Trailer

For those unaware, the term Scandi Flick is referencing the Scandinavian Flick, a popular move in rallying, hence the name and the rally theme. The trailer starts showing the boys on a football pitch somewhere in Scandinavia before Clarkson reveals the challenge set to them. They then appear to tow skiers behind their cars although, as Clarkson says, one of them only has one leg. We get a great gag though when May and Hammond ask what on earth Clarkson has bought, before he goes “I am older and with that comes…” and Hammond interjects with “weight”!

We are clearly going to get the usual tomfoolery too, as Clarkson tries to get the ice off his car by setting fire to it before remarking that he has overdone it. The trailer remarks that it features three grumpy cold men going wild, and they are very much going wild in this adventure. It looks like there are some pretty epic cars in this special too and at some point they are also decked out in epic rallying liveries. There is though a certain something we need to address that is set to feature in the show.

RELATED: Watch The Trailer: 'The Grand Tour’ Goes French In Carnage A Trois

James May’s Pretty Big Crash

At some point during filming for the special, May suffered a crash in this Mitsubishi . The media recently found out that it happened and of course, reported that it was at 75 mph and that it was pretty big but also stating May was fine the next day. May himself took to Twitter recently to say “Thank you for all your kind comments and funny jokes re my crash, but it was a while back, not that bad, and I’m perfectly OK. Apologies to Evo fans for binning the VIII.” He then signed off calling himself a #Bellend which is a more common insult in the UK than it is in North America.

The trailer of the special does hint at this incident, as we see May come flying towards Clarkson in a tunnel, the car goes sideways as he tries to stop, and then it cuts to another segment. That would appear to be where the incident happens and while it looks like it’s going to be big, it doesn’t look quite as bad as what all the media were stating. The main thing is though, that May is okay, and it apparently happened before he went off to film Our Man In Italy, so it's good to see it didn’t seem to hurt him for too long.

The Inclusion Of Rally Icons

It looks like we have some great cars featured with the Evo VIII and the Impreza STi , although Clarkson clearly didn’t quite get the memo with his more modern Audi. It will be very cool to see these three cars though get pushed to their limits on some very interesting terrain, and the theme of rallying is an exciting one. Plus, if the trailer is anything to go by, we will get some truly gorgeous shots of Scandinavia.

We Can’t Wait For This Special

Other highlights from the trailer include May dragging a bus shelter from the back of his Evo, and then Clarkson’s Audi shooting flames out the back of it. The tunnel challenge certainly looks a bit of a dangerous one not for the faint-hearted, so it's perhaps easy to see how it could go wrong. We can’t help but burst out laughing when we see Hammond and May slide over on the ice either. We can’t wait to view this latest special, and thankfully we don’t have long to wait before we can view it.

What Is A Scandi Flick? The Meaning Behind The Grand Tour’s Latest Episode

The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick is a much better play on words that what most people think. Obviously, with the latest special being based in Scandinavia, it is a nod to the location but it goes further than that.

The latest special showed the hosts, Jeremy Clarkson , James May , and Richard Hammond , racing around Norway in their choice of rally-inspired road cars. The episode was filled with drama, including May’s horrendous crash.

top gear grand tour scandi flick

The term ‘Scandinavian Flick’, often shortened to ‘Scandi Flick’ is a term used in rallying, fitting in nicely with the rally-inspired cars that the hosts chose for the special. The manoeuvre is used by drivers to keep momentum up whilst going around tight corners.

The Scandi Flick is all about using the weight of the car to shift towards the direction of the corner. On entry to the corner, the driver initially turns the opposite direction then quickly flicks back to the edge of the apex. The car’s suspension helps move the weight into the corner, sending the rear out. This gives the car more momentum through the corner.

Carfection, have created a video for their YouTube channel showing viewers how to pull off the perfect Scandi Flick.
