Customer Feedback

Chris, we wanted to say thank you for the wonderful day we spent with you tasting the wines of Hawkes Bay. You picked some real winners, we enjoyed them all. You provided some special memories of our trip to New Zealand.

L Boersma, USA

Chris was a wonderful guide & terrific person! His knowledge of the region, the food and wine was second to none. (And lucky for us, he has a great sense of humor...) Pickup was right on time, the van was comfortable & stocked with water (a must for a wine tour). Chris asked us about food allergies, specific sights/requests, and we were off. The day passed so quickly, and we ended up having dinner at a recommended local eatery to round out the experience. Truly 5 out of 5.

C Weber, USA

Just a fabulous day with Chris. He knows the area and took us to one of the most extraordinary vineyards. He reached out ahead of time to find out what we were interested in seeing and he made certain we did. We only had a brief time in Napier and we would have missed so much without Chris. He is a joy to be with.

Thank you so much Best Travel for our amazing getaway to Vanuatu, such an awesome prize and we had a fantastic time. Thank you to Rob for all your help.

Any travel overseas at the moment should be done by a Travel Agent. You save yourself a lot of worry & anxiety when you can rely on your go to person to handle flight changes. In my case…the wonderful Christine Sheppard from Best Travel has been a god send changing my flights for the 3rd time from the Gold Coast to NZ.

Best Travel. And it really is The Best! Our family felt extremely well looked after by Linda who explained, and dealt with, all the many aspects of our UK travel and even booked the coach trip on arrival for us. Linda’s reassurance took away a huge amount of stress in these uncertain times and she went well above and beyond what we expected. Highly recommended. Thank you!

Best Travel & Cruise - Hawke's Bay: Reviews

Fantastic experience: Great service, team are always welcoming and it's great to see all the other agents working with a smile and willing to help out. Im really not sure what these other negative comments are in relation to. Linda created an outstanding itinerary for our family holiday to Bali then back to the Goldcoast, her communication, knowledge, passion and followup really showed in creating our dream holiday!. Ive had travel agents in the past, they have been good, but Linda has been next level. Absolutely stoked we were in good hands from day one and will defiantly be using Linda again in the very near future!. Thank you Linda, Keep up the great work!. I will be passing your contact details on to all my friends who look to travel soon.

Fantastic experience: We booked flights back to the UK to see family (after 4 long years) via Expedia. Turned up to check in and there was a "ticketing agent failure". Long story short we were left high & dry in Auckland airport with no flights at a very busy time of year. A friend put a shout out on a local page asking for recommendations of someone who could help. Overwhelmingly the top recommendation was Christine From Best Travel. Christine helped us immediately appreciated the urgency for us. She was compassionate, professional, efficient, reliable and trustworthy. She absolutely did her very best for us and got us on the next suitable flights. I am so grateful that I found Christine and Best Travel and will never book with anyone else!! 10 out of 10 for service. She is just lovely to deal with!

GTN is “Awesome” ………..awesome staff, awesome deals just an awesome company that I am very lucky to work with.

We have been with the GTN team since they first started and they are professional, caring, willing to assist with any query and will go above and beyond to find fares to suit, even when we have the most ridiculous of destinations. Even in the hardest of times, they reach out to each and every one of their agents to make sure we are ok. Thanks for your ongoing support team.

GTN provides exclusive deals and offers, with a team of experts to support in every situation.  They are polite and quick to respond. We strongly recommend GTN services.

As a niche tour operator we are able to remain independent while enjoying the benefits of the GTN network and family.

We moved to GTN in 2019 and have not looked back. We have found the entire GTN team fantastic to work with, honest, reliable and proactive. The GTN team have gone out of their way during the current COVID crisis, ensuring continued support and excellent communication.  Without hesitation, we highly recommend GTN

Mondo Travel have been a customer of GTN since 2016. The big difference with GTN, is that they actually care about our business. We get great support and advice when required and the team are responsive to our needs. Our team of Brokers are also very complimentary of the service GTN provide.

We have used GTN since the beginning and find them very professional, quick and reliable. Never had any issues!

I am really impressed the way GTN proactively work to grow my business with theirs. I’ve GONE GLOBAL and am loving it!

Great company to work with – they get the best deals possible!

Candid, transparent, approachable, proficient, proactive, dependable and impartial are a few words that describes this organisation. A real partnership and a great bunch of people.

Super team to work with and excellent support, the great team never fail to deliver.

Our agency has been with GTN from the beginning because it is such a great team with great values and vision for the travel industry. They’re honest and fair and really get to know your business to help you grow. Over the years we were able to mutually grow our businesses together through their encouragement and excellent advice. We had so many opportunities for Famils and conferences. Would 100% recommend joining the GTN family.

Honest, efficient and reliable, all the qualities you need when you are in business

A truly outstanding independent travel agency group and ticketing consolidator and one I am so proud to work alongside. The team at GTN are knowledgeable, helpful and just generally interested in your business success and offer support where others have failed. Highly recommend!

The Consolidation team at GTN are excellent to deal with.  They are efficient and friendly, and when there has been queries with airlines or airfares, they have always sought answers and found solutions to the problem wherever possible.  The QuikTravel system is easy to use, as well as the additional information on the system around commissions, airline contacts, policies, as well as the summary of recent changes in fares & rules from airlines.  GTN is an excellent partner, and the small personal nature of the team is a good fit for our business

Exceptional! A professional, friendly, dedicated team. GTN, working with you is a real pleasure.

Go Global! Strong partnership, friendly staff, competitive deals, prompt responses!

Exploring Paradise – The Best Four Destinations in Hawke’s Bay

  • BEST TRAVEL

Nestled on New Zealand’s North Island, Hawke’s Bay is a region that encapsulates the best of what this stunning country has to offer – natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, fine wine, and outdoor adventures. With its Mediterranean-like climate and diverse landscapes, Hawke’s Bay has become a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a unique and enriching experience. In this article, we’ll explore the four top destinations that make Hawke’s Bay a gem of New Zealand.

  • Napier – The Art Deco Capital

Napier, often referred to as the “Art Deco Capital of the World,” is a city that has risen from the ashes of a devastating 1931 earthquake. Today, it boasts a stunning collection of Art Deco architecture that transports visitors back in time. Stroll along the waterfront Marine Parade, take a guided Art Deco walking tour, and visit the Art Deco Trust for a deeper understanding of the city’s history. Don’t forget to explore the vibrant local arts scene, dine at excellent restaurants, and enjoy the wine bars along the beachfront.

  • Hastings – The Heart of Wine Country

Hastings, situated just a short drive from Napier, is the epicenter of Hawke’s Bay’s world-renowned wine country. The region’s temperate climate and fertile soil have made it a winemaker’s paradise. Hawke’s Bay is particularly famous for its red wines, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but you’ll also find exceptional Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs. Be sure to visit some of the award-winning wineries and vineyards, like Craggy Range and Te Mata Estate, and savor their wines while taking in breathtaking vineyard views.

  • Te Mata Peak – Nature’s Majesty

Rising 399 meters above sea level, Te Mata Peak offers unrivaled panoramic views of Hawke’s Bay. It’s a place where nature’s beauty takes center stage. There are several walking tracks that cater to various fitness levels, and a hike to the summit is rewarded with a breathtaking vista of rolling hills, orchards, and the Pacific Ocean. The peak is also a fantastic spot for picnics, photography, or simply soaking in the serenity of the surroundings.

  • Cape Kidnappers – Gannet Paradise

Cape Kidnappers is an extraordinary headland that’s not only a geological wonder but also home to one of the world’s largest gannet colonies. To reach the colony, you can take a scenic tractor tour offered by local operators. Along the way, you’ll pass through dramatic cliffs, rocky outcrops, and stunning coastal landscapes. Witnessing thousands of gannets nesting and soaring above is a wildlife spectacle you won’t soon forget. It’s a birdwatcher’s paradise and a photographer’s dream.

Hawke’s Bay is a region of contrasts, where historic architecture mingles with natural beauty and the art of winemaking thrives alongside vibrant cultural scenes. Whether you’re exploring the Art Deco charm of Napier, savoring the world-class wines of Hastings, admiring the panoramic views from Te Mata Peak, or marveling at the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers, each destination in Hawke’s Bay has its unique allure. This region captures the essence of New Zealand’s beauty and hospitality, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an unforgettable experience in Aotearoa.

What training or studies are needed to work in a travel agency.

Before we delve into the different courses that allow you to work in a travel agency, let's start by highlighting the fact that no diploma is required if you want to open your own agency or work in one. In fact, since 2015, it is no longer mandatory to have a BTS in tourism or a similar degree to create your own travel agency. You can therefore practice without a diploma, however skills and experience remain key elements for success. Let's not fool ourselves, creating this type of company, or even just working in it, is not within reach of those who are not passionate about the subject of travel and foreign cultures, and furthermore, it is never too late to train and learn. If you have no diploma to help you, but you want to change your career to become a travel agent for example, know that it will be possible to train yourself via your "Compte Personnel de Formation" (CPF). Inquire with Pôle Emploi to find out where your account stands and how much you have to train yourself. After having said all this, let's now take a look at the courses that are most often favored before entering the world of work in a travel agency. After high school: 2 years to obtain a BTS in tourism or operational commercial management; 3 years for the BUT (Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie) in commercialization techniques. Specialized schools also offer bachelor's degrees. After a two-year degree: - BTS in operational commercial management - BTS in tourism - Salesperson in business travel and tourism After a three-year degree: - BUT in commercialization techniques - Professional license in tourism professions: commercialization of tourism products - Professional license in tourism and leisure professions After a five-year degree: - Master of Science in Tourism and Destination Management

What is the scope of intervention of a professional?

On a daily basis, the activities of a travel agent are diverse and varied, so much so that the professional will rarely have time to get bored during their days, provided their agency is running properly. These tasks can be very different from one company to another. However, to give you a more precise idea of what to expect when practicing this profession, we will summarize for you all the main functions, as well as the most common, for which a travel agent is responsible: - To start, they must of course be familiar with their agency's tourist offerings in order to inform their customers and be able to illustrate their point with detailed information if necessary. - They must also be able to welcome customers in person or over the phone, with the appropriate tone, voice and warmth. - They must also respond to requests for quotes or information by email, which is an administrative task that takes a lot of time and requires organization and rigor at all times. - They must also select tourism products according to the customer's request, then present their characteristics in a constructive and, if possible, argumentative way (the strengths, the prices). - They must also advise the client on the different products (transportation, services), make the reservation, and then establish the contractual documents necessary for the commercial exchange. - They must also check travel documents in advance so that the traveler does not encounter any unpleasant surprises during their trip. - They must also establish the terms of settlement of a dispute or pass it on to legal or litigation services. - They must also provide information for monitoring activity supports so that the agency can have an overall view of its activity and its evolution over time. - They must organize the display of the sales space, with a certain marketing spirit. - Finally, they must perform sales promotion operations, especially during periods specifically conducive to this.

Why use a professional?

The idea of traveling is often a source of anxiety for those who are preparing for it, as there are many things to consider so that the trip goes smoothly and without any hiccups. In this section, we will specifically discuss the main reasons why you should consider using a travel agency or at least a professional in the sector to organize your trip. Preparing for a trip, even one of just a few days, is not easy. Certainly, a lot of information is available on the internet, but compiling it all to organize your future trip takes a lot of time. First, let's realize that going through a travel agency will allow you to save a lot of time. No need to spend several hours searching for the right flight or finding a hotel to sleep in, finding a rental car, etc. Calling on a professional means giving yourself more time to devote to other things that could also, why not, optimize your trip. Then, entrusting the organization of your trip to a provider means trusting the experience and know-how of a professional who has the required skills to organize a trip that meets your expectations and advise you properly, both in terms of tourism, legal, or even geographical aspects. Calling on a professional, contrary to what one might think, often turns out to be less expensive in the end than organizing everything yourself. Indeed, thanks to their relations with suppliers, the professional is likely to find very good deals for you and offer unbeatable prices, for example for flights, but also for accommodations. It is precisely the addition of all this that will allow you to save money. To conclude this section, we would like to emphasize that for each of us, safety and assurance during the trip are two essential things, regardless of the final destination. Thanks to their total mastery of the travel world, a travel professional will be committed to ensuring your safety throughout your stay. Furthermore, you will benefit from after-sales service and, in the event of an unforeseen circumstance (whether it be a canceled flight, an airline strike, or other), you can obtain assistance simply by contacting your travel agent, who will then take care of finding a solution to your problem.

When should you call a professional?

There isn't really a rule about this, as long as you don't wait until the last minute. Consider that the sooner, the better, so planning a trip to the other side of the world cannot be done overnight. The agent has to find a flight, accommodation options at the destination, and a whole bunch of other services that you might want to take advantage of once you're there. It is therefore better to start planning at least a few weeks or months in advance. This will also allow you to benefit from better prices, which is not insignificant. Note, however, that some agencies specify a maximum anticipation date, meaning that, for example, it will not be possible to book a flight or even a hotel 2 or 3 years in advance... but this is natural and almost goes without saying.

How to find a professional to organize your trip?

No matter where you are or where you want to go, finding this type of service is relatively easy, as long as you don't live in a too remote area. Whether you live in Waipukurau downtown or in the deepest countryside, start by asking your acquaintances and loved ones, although it must be acknowledged that word-of-mouth is not necessarily the most effective way to find the rare gem (but you never know...). If you live in a very remote area, in the middle of the countryside, not finding a travel agency nearby (within 20 or 30 kilometers) should not stop you or discourage you; be sure that you will find an agency in the nearest medium or large city! In any case, rest assured that the right professional, once contacted, will be more than willing to make your life easier, and if necessary, subsequent exchanges can be done through emails or phone calls. If word-of-mouth yields nothing, which is very possible, then it is recommended to use the internet, by consulting a site like StarOfService, for example, which lists all professionals in a certain field, based on where you're conducting the search. In just a few clicks, the site will provide you with the contact details of the said professional and you can contact them right away, and this also applies to travel agents. From there, you are free to shop around or simply choose the one closest to your home, it is no longer our concern...

How much does a travel agency service cost?

The rates that we are going to indicate here are not contractual, but simply average values obtained throughout the French territory. Each agency has its own way of billing, so we cannot recommend enough that you ask for the details of the services from the relevant agent. Only then can you have a precise idea of what you are paying for. Having said that, let's now move on to the pricing, which, while not to be taken as exact figures, will still give you an idea of the prices practiced on the market. In general, it should be noted that the majority of a travel agency's income comes from commissions paid by the various suppliers involved during the stay; these are percentages that are taken from each sale made. Generally, the agent on average takes between 8% and 10% of the public price for a plane ticket sold; regarding other services, the percentage is between 9 and 15% of the public price. Consulting fees, act and reservation fees are also sources of income for a travel agency, but it is up to each brand to quantify its services. Therefore, you will have to ask the question or inquire when the time comes.

How to choose the right travel agent or agency?

No matter where you are or live, whether in a particular city, region or department, finding this type of professional is relatively simple, based on studies on the subject. So whether you live in the inner city of Waipukurau or in the depths of the countryside in Moselle or Gironde, we advise you to start by asking around among your acquaintances and friends, as word of mouth is always a good way to find the right address for such things (we all know people who have traveled through a particular agency, so let's start by looking in that direction...). If this first search yields no results, it is then possible to use the Internet, as it is the most common way to purchase travel services, not physical agencies. Once online, no matter which search engine is used, we suggest consulting a site like StarOfService, for example, which lists all professionals in a particular field, depending on the location of the search and where you live. In just a few clicks, the site will provide you with the contact details of the professional and you can contact them within minutes to inquire about their availability, rates, etc. Don't hesitate to consult a large number of customer reviews and comments, as they are essential information for getting an idea of the level of service provided by the agent or agency in question.

Here are some questions to ask a travel professional during your first meeting:

- How long have you been practicing this profession? What training or diploma do you possess to carry out this activity? - What are your rates? Can I have a detailed breakdown of them? - Will you provide me with a proper quote prior to starting the work? - What are your availability to discuss my travel project? - Can you guarantee the respect of deadlines and rates that we agree upon?

Things to do in Hawkes Bay When Raining

Ātea a Rangi Star Compass, the traditional navigation tool for east Polynesians voyaging the Pacific Ocean, was the alignment of the stars. A star compass is a training tool used by celestial navigators who sailed traditionally throughout the Pacific. The rising and setting points of the celestial bodies are memorised by using the carved Pou (Posts) and the Horizon. For tours of the site, please contact the Ātea a Rangi Educational Trust , which was responsible for the design, carving and completion of the star compass.

The exposed lookout is known for its wind, and there is no water nearby, consequently carrying adequate supplies.

Havelock North

Mahia peninsula.

The glamorous queen of art deco Napier is the regional centre of Hawke’s Bay. Napier is a city with a personality. Bustling, busy Napier, the regional centre of Hawke’s Bay, has its distinctive character forged from the port, the earthquake and surrounding hills.

Napier is separated from Hastings by fertile plains, orchards, vineyards and dairy pastures. The town has a streak of independence from its neighbours and is justifiably proud of its pastel glory and its role as the oldest settled town in the Bay.

  • Marine Parade is an elegant seaside avenue of Norfolk pines framing the road and the sea on the other side. The Parade has a Pania of the Reef sculpture as a focal point for selfies and a pretty art deco Soundshell pavilion for concerts.

Hawke’s, Hawkes, Hawke or HawkesBay

Hawke’s Bay – apostrophe or no apostrophe? James Cook, who came up with this name in 1769, first recorded it as ‘Hawke’s Bay’. A day later, he used ‘Hawkes Bay’, and the official map of the voyage uses the latter form. In those days, spelling and punctuation were often inconsistent.

Even though apostrophes are discouraged in place names, Hawke’s Bay became the official name for the region. This is because the “Hawke’s Bay” form was used in early statutes and official documents.

Even so, many people spell the name without an apostrophe. Further complicating matters, the Bay itself is called Hawkes Bay, following a conventional naming practice.

Te Matau-a-Māui is the Maori name of Hawke’s Bay. Te Matau-a-Māui means ‘the fishhook of Māui’.

Boundaries – Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay is a long tract of land, bound by mountain ranges to the west and North, coast to the east, and the similar landscape of Wairarapa to the south. The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council covers the Wairoa, Hastings and Central Hawke’s Bay districts and Napier city.

The area from Woodville, near the Manawatū Gorge, to Norsewood is now officially part of the Tararua district. However, it has strong historical links with the rest of the region and is commonly seen as southern Hawke’s Bay.

New Zealand Travel Tips

12 of the most incredible Hawke’s Bay wineries

If you enjoy a quality drop and delicious food, there are few places in New Zealand better than the Hawke’s Bay.

Including Napier, Eskdale, Hastings, Havelock North and Te Awanga, the Hawke’s Bay is home to all of the fine things in life.

From vineyards that would look comfortable in Italy, to quirky spots that are distinctly kiwi , each of the Hawke’s Bay wineries on this list warrants a stop.

The Best Hawke’s Bay Wineries

The Best Wineries in Napier

1. brookfields vineyards.

Family-run, Brookfields Vineyards is a casual (but beautiful) spot in the Hawke’s Bay. It was founded in 1937, making it the region’s oldest boutique winery.

Whether you join their team on a wine tasting from the cellar door (which comes complete with plenty of tines – rosé, whites and reds – plus some chocolate to bring out the best in the reds) or choose to sit down for a meal, Brookefields is a fantastic choice.

They have seating both inside and outside in the garden (where they sometimes have live music on a Saturday), providing a lovely relaxed ambiance.

Menu Highlights

  • Hoisin pork belly with slaw and crackle
  • Warmed hot smoked salmon with greens
  • Loaded fries with pulled beef and cheesy goodness.

If I was to recommend one vineyard to visit in the Hawkes Bay, it would be Brookfields. Aimee

2. Mission Estate Winery

Mission Estate is the oldest winery in all of New Zealand and the largest in Hawke’s Bay.

Highly regarded as a winery that produces great quality wines at fairly reasonable prices, this is a great place to spend an afternoon in Napier.

During your visit, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of Napier city and the coastline. Whether you sit on the beautiful outdoor terrace in the sunshine, or indoors in their stylish restaurant, a visit to Mission Estate is a real treat.

In addition to a fabulous menu, they also host a variety of surprisingly affordable wine tastings and also serve guests from the cellar door.

  • Prawn cutlets, pani puri, mint coconut yoghurt, tomato salsa, and peanuts, with cucumber & gin ice
  • Market fish, tua tua clams, smoked bacon, bean & chicory, celeriac and a red wine reduction
  • Beef eye fillet (200 gram), braised brisket, potato & parmesan velouté, crispy potato and a horopito crust.

198 Church Road, Poraiti, Napier 4112

Did you know? Mission Estate also doubles as a music venue at times, having hosted some of the most successful musicians in the world!

3. Church Road Winery

Church Road is home to six different wine sub-brands, resulting in a wide variety of reliable, inspired winemaking. They are best known for their chardonnay, syrah and blended reds.

Whilst you’re there, we highly recommend you sample some!

Fortunately, they offer a variety of different wine tasting options , starting from only $10 per person, making this an affordable stop in Napier.

In addition to great wine, Church Road serves up delicious food in a beautiful setting.

Not only is the outlook stunning, but there’s a big field (which is perfect for kids to run around on). It’s also a great spot to set up your picnic, should you choose — these can be purchased through Church Road.

Staff, food, service, wine tasting, venue… all 10/10!!  TLC056, TripAdvisor
  • Ginger caramel pork belly, carrot & orange purée, fried prawn, pickled ginger and carrot remoulade
  • Venison rump, cornbread, roast pumpkin, beetroot yoghurt relish and sour cherry jus
  • Scotch fillet, blue cheese hollandaise, duck fat pommes Anna and charred onion.

4. Crab Farm Winery

If you’re looking for a winery with a difference, Crab Farm could be just the ticket.

This boutique family-owned and operated winery and restaurant is situated just outside of Napier.

Having made their first vintage in 1987, they now offer a wide range of wines — all of which are made from grapes grown on their three Hawke’s Bay vineyards.

Their restaurant is the perfect place to enjoy a drop too.

With a roaring fire pit (which is perfect for those chilly winter days ) and a sunny courtyard and treehouse, their dining space is unlike anything else you’ll find in the region.

Pull up a Thai triangle cushion, enjoy your wine (and a perfectly paired nibble) and tap your toes to the live music that’s regularly on offer.

Seafood platter was amazing and the wine tasting was fab. The courtyard area for lunch was beautiful… and there was a sandpit for the kids to play in. They reckon it was the best chicken burger they have ever had! Katherine Mitchell, NZTT member.

Menu Highlights:

  • Ika maata (raw fish) – Crab Farm lemon, marinated fish in a coconut cream sauce with cherry tomatoes, cucumber and capsicum with coriander
  • 250gm Angus scotch fillet on beetroot puree with a polenta cake, smoked mushroom and green beans, topped with a green peppercorn sauce
  • Coconut and passionfruit crème brûlée, served with shortbread.

511 Main North Road, Bay View, Napier 4104

Pro Tip: Lunch and dinner are served Thursday to Sunday, with live music played on Friday nights. Crab Farm closes at 3 pm on most Saturdays during the wedding season. Bookings are highly recommended year-round.

Eskdale Wineries

5. linden estate winery.

You’ll find Linden Estate on the slopes of the Esk Valley. Situated there, in a unique microclimate, they grow beautiful grapes that are made into equally beautiful wines.

Not only is this one of the most northerly wine-growing areas in Hawke’s Bay, it is also one of the oldest.

Creating boutique wines, they grow a number of different grape varieties in small blocks.

Across 15 hectares of land they grow:

  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Gewurztraminer
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cabernet Franc

In addition to fabulous wine, they also serve beautiful meals for lunch and dinner.

With a focus on fresh food and vibrant flavours, served in a beautiful part of the Hawke’s Bay, it’s hard to beat.

  • Vineyard selection antipasto platter. A selection of meats and seafood, house-made dips, cheese, marinated olives, caper-berries, sundried tomatoes and gherkins with toasted ciabatta
  • Confit of duck with a potato gratin, baby vegetables and port jus
  • Affogato, Chambord, vanilla ice cream and espresso.

7. Te Awanga Estate

We have been fans of Te Awanga Estate for many years (Kim Crawford Wines) – the platters must be the best value for money in NZ and never disappoint or get old. The laidbackness is quintessential NZ – no pretence here – sit under the vines on the hillside overlooking the majestic ocean bay. Bliss. Sylvia Holding, NZTT member.

8. black barn vineyards.

Sadly Black Barn Vineyards was damaged by fire at the start of 2022. It’s still possible to support them whilst they rebuild though!

Black barn was well known and loved for lunchtime dining and wine tasting.

Now, they are open every Saturday and Sunday between 10 am and 4 pm for wine sales, takings and pick-your-own platters. Occasionally they roll out a food truck too. Whatever you choose to eat and drink there, you’ll be sure to enjoy sitting amongst their beautiful grounds.

During the summer season, they hold a growers’ marketing on site which is a real local favourite too.

I loved Black barn for atmosphere, tasting, lunch and great service! Ana Nolan, NZTT member.

9. Craggy Range Winery

Craggy Range Winery is a family-owned vineyard, sitting under the watchful eye of Te Mata Peak.

This wonderful company has earnt two hats and the incredible title of Winery Restaurant of the Year at the 2020-2021 Cuisine Good Food Awards. Unsurprisingly, it really is considered one of the very best wineries and restaurants in the Hawke’s Bay.

With intimate, comfortable dining, a wonderful vista, stunning sculptures (including a famous Paul Dibble creation) and fine wines, this is the perfect place to spend a leisurely afternoon.

The Craggy Range wines are produced at two different locations; the Gimblett Gravels Winery and Giants Winery. You’ll find their Cellar Door at the Giants Winery in Havelock North, which is where their restaurant is also based.

Craggy Range was possibly one of the top wine & food experiences I have ever had! The staff were top notch. They serve an AMAZING first bread course with camembert butter & honey. The food and wine pairings were delicious. It is definitely a treat location but highly recommended. Krystle Thomas, NZTT member .
  • Pecorino cheese soufflé, brown butter roasted pumpkin & red wine pear
  • Glazed lamb shoulder, wilted greens, pinenut & parmesan crumb with sides of roast potatoes & confit garlic dressing, and organic green salad from our gardens, with honey & chardonnay vinaigrette
  • Soft meringue, roasted plum, vanilla yoghurt & passionfruit curd.
We loved Craggy Range. It was a beautiful setting. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and learning about the challenges they overcame with growing in that region. The wine was excellent. I can highly recommend it. Kathy Culp Bent, NZTT member.

  • Beef eye fillet, pommes puree, red wine jus, confit mushroom and salsa verde
  • Vanilla crème brûlée, yoghurt cream, summer berries and sugared lavosh.

Moscow in 1 Day (Walking tour)

Welcome to visit moscow tours.

We provide authentic, informative and memorable tour packages and city tours, at very competitive prices. Visit Moscow Tours are available not only in Moscow, but also in other cities: Saint Petersburg, Kazan, Suzdal and Sergiev Posad.  We also organise customised individual programs tailored just for you.

Our guests come in large groups, small private groups, as couples or as single travellers. We take care of and treat our guests with respect in a friendly and warm family environment. We show people our beautiful cities with passion and deep knowledge of their history, culture and traditions.

Our guides are extremely hospitable, helpful and well-informed. They are simply the best because only by providing the best services can we make the world fall in love with Russia. And we are very happy when our guests say that they will definitely come back to Russia and that they will tell all their friends how great Russia is! That is what inspires us to put even more dedication and hard work into our tours, knowing that what we do is positive and meaningful.

Our classic tours include tours of Moscow and Saint Petersburg, two main Russian cities.

Moscow is a big and busy  megalopolis and Russia’s capital city, where more than 12 million people live and work. Our capital city is happening place; it is mysterious, elegant, luxurious, fashionable, clean and bright, with its unique legends, traditions and events. It is with great pride that we show the Red Square and the Kremlin, our Underground and Tretyakovskaya Gallery, among other stunning attractions.

Saint Petersburg is our second capital,  the second largest city in the Russian Federation. This wonderful city has a strong and lively aristocratic spirit, uniquely Russian royal architecture, magnificent museums and theatres. Saint Petersburg bears the royal heritage of Russia, which can be felt in its air, its streets, parks, monuments, museums and citizens.  In Saint Petersburg tours, we will take you to the Hermitage, Peter and Paul Fortress, Faberge Museum and Orthodox Cathedrals. We’re sure you will love it!

If you have a few more days to spare, venture into the dreamy Russian countryside in Suzdal or Sergiev Posad. Suzdal is a small town with a population of about ten thousand people, situated on less than 15 square kilometres. This tiny area is home to 53 historic cathedrals, five monasteries and a kremlin. Church domes are visible like mushrooms from anywhere and everywhere in the town like in a fairy tale. No wonder Suzdal is called the ‘Town Museum”.  It is definitely worth visiting!

Just try any of Visit Moscow Tours’ tour packages or any individual city tour, and we promise that you will want to come back to Russia again.  Russia is huge with countless amazing places to visit. There are so many unique experiences to be had and energies to be felt that one tour is definitely not enough to explore this vast land. It is also a very safe destination to travel, and we have a tradition of warm hospitality. Our people adore and take care of visitors as our own guests, and even if they do not know your language very well, they still try to be helpful and hospitable.

Our guides will show you the most interesting attractions and historical places, taking you on a journey to the past to enjoy stories of medieval times, the Romanov monarchy, the Soviet Era. And of course, we will show you the contemporary life of our country through authentic local experiences.

We look forward to meeting you soon!

Northern Lights Set to Return During Extreme Solar Storm’s 2nd Night

Electrical utilities said they weathered earlier conditions as persistent geomagnetic storms were expected to cause another light show in evening skies.

A bright flash in the middle of a black and yellow image of the sun.

By Katrina Miller ,  Ivan Penn and Emmett Lindner

Night skies in many parts of the Northern Hemisphere are expected to bloom again on Saturday night with the vivid colors of the northern lights , or aurora borealis, as a powerful geomagnetic storm caused by a hyperactive sun persists through the weekend.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration , which monitors space weather, said in an update on Saturday that it continued to observe solar activity that could lead to periods of “severe-extreme” geomagnetic storms . The federal agency first issued a warning on Friday as bursts of material from the sun’s surface traveled into Earth’s atmosphere, causing irregularities in power, navigation and communication systems.

Major power utilities had largely prepared their electrical grids for the solar storm, and their customers were unaffected.

For most people, the solar storm was a gift: It caused ribbons of pink, purple and green light across night skies of much of the United States, Canada and Europe . Where evening skies are clear on Saturday, the lights can be expected again.

Known as aurora, the light is caused by particles from the sun interacting with gases in Earth’s atmosphere, and is usually only observed at latitudes closer to the North or South Pole. But on Friday night, residents of lower latitudes, including those in North Carolina and Arizona, saw the dancing lights.

Jane Wong, 30, of San Francisco, drove to the Presidio overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge where conditions started out foggy. But at midnight, her wait paid off as the sky started to clear.

“It’s right here, which is really magnificent,” she said.

Benjamin Williamson, 41, of Bath, Maine, drove to the Portland Head Light, a lighthouse in the state. An aurora enthusiast, he’d seen the northern lights during another major solar event in 2003, and in Iceland in 2017. None of those events, nor the April 8 solar eclipse, prepared him for what he saw on Friday.

“The solar eclipse last month, I thought that was the coolest thing I’d ever seen,” he said. “This might have beat it.”

Solar storms are caused by violent expulsions of charged particles from the sun’s surface. When directed toward Earth the material can interact with our planet’s magnetic field, resulting in a geomagnetic storm.

NOAA categorizes geomagnetic storms on a “G” scale of 1, or “minor,” to 5, “extreme.” On Thursday, the agency issued its first watch in 19 years for a G4, or “severe,” storm, which escalated into a warning on Friday afternoon.

Activity has exceeded the agency’s prediction, and some of it is now classified as G5, making it the strongest storm to reach Earth since October 2003.

The storm is caused by a giant cluster of sunspots, or dark, cool regions on the solar surface with strong magnetic fields. (If you still have your eclipse glasses handy, you may be able to see the sunspots during the day.) According to NOAA, the cluster will continue to flare and explode, with effects on Earth through at least the weekend. In 1989, a geomagnetic disturbance disrupted power systems in Canada and the United States. Energy providers have been on guard ever since.

“The utilities have been preparing for a large storm with the required vulnerability assessments,” said Bob Arritt, a technical executive at the Electric Power Research Institute, an independent research and development organization.

Some utilities saw high temperature alarms triggered overnight on parts of the electric grid, Mr. Arritt said, but added that it was too early to know if the alarms were related to the solar storm. He said he could not disclose the locations of the alerts as of Saturday.

But while the power system faced some additional stress from the storm, he added, “We have no reason to feel that there is any imminent threat to damaging equipment.”

The solar storm prompted managers of a number of electric grids to take extra precautions to keep electricity flowing, and to issue warnings to customers about potential disruptions.

PJM, the manager of the nation’s largest grid network across 13 states from the East Coast to the Midwest, said its geomagnetic disturbance warning would continue through the end of Saturday. ISO New England, which manages the electric grid for six states in the Northeast, issued a precautionary alert, which notified participants in wholesale energy markets and owners of electrical generation equipment that abnormal conditions are present on the power system.
