Carnival Cruise Director Jonathan “Cookie” Adams Talks Favorite ShipRocked Moments And Favorite Cruise Itinerary

It truly takes a village to make a cruise the experience that it is and at Carnival , the crew member who takes on a lot of that responsibility is the cruise director. Cruise directors are responsible for guest interaction, behind-the-scenes coordination of all entertainment and safety protocols. They work long hours, but you could never tell by the way they keep the party going!

Our favorite Carnival cruise director, Jonathan “Cookie” Adams, always goes the extra mile for the fun on ShipRocked . ShipRocked is a unique music charter that happens annually where rock music fans take to the high seas for a week of music and adventure onboard the ship and at Carnival ports of call all across the Caribbean Sea.

We caught up with Cookie to talk about life as a cruise director for Carnival , his favorite ShipRocked memory and the Carnival run you need to take if you want a really unique travel experience.

What is the job of a cruise director on Carnival?

It’s our job to take you to a whole other world and element, helping you forget about the real world and enjoy the life you deserve. We are here to entertain to the max. It’s a great feeling to know we can add to the experience of your vacation by hosting a game show, trivia or party. We love just seeing people smile and laugh. That’s what I personally think the job title entails.

How long have you been doing it?

Oh, sweet baby Jesus. I have been with Carnival for eight years, going on nine actually. It’s been five years as cruise director. I wouldn’t change anything about my experience. Probably one of the best experiences of my life.

Cruise Director Cookie Talks Favorite ShipRocked Moments

What’s your favorite port of call?

Oh, now this is where I get stumped. I don’t have a favorite port, but I have a favorite run. We do this thing called a crossing cruise twice a year where we take this ship from Alaska to Australia and Australia back to Alaska .

I want on it!

Yeah, definitely. When I tell you what I’m about to tell you, you’ll be like, wow! You start in Seattle, take you all over Alaska, we drop one voyage off in Vancouver , Canada, pick up a new voyage. We have five sea days. We do the east point of Hawaii and we end at Honolulu. In Honolulu, we have an overnight. We pick up all the Australians the next day and I think we have like five more sea days. And then we hit Tahiti, Bora Bora, Fiji, and then like five more sea days and we dock right next to the Opera House in Sydney.

That cruise is like two years long. I’m just kidding. It’s 30 days. You have an equator crossing party where everybody on the ship comes out and the captain brings all of his bridge officers down. They throw beans, rice and eggs and all the officers and everybody on the ship has to kiss the fish before we cross the equator. It’s a huge fish and everybody has to kiss a raw fish. Yeah, it’s a lot. It’s crazy.

Oh, my God, I love it. I didn’t even know that was a thing.

Yeah, it is.

Cruise Director Cookie Talks Favorite ShipRocked Moments

What’s your favorite ShipRocked memory or moment?

Papa Roach was playing on the Lido deck. I’ll never forget this moment. I think it was the last night of the cruise. The bass was so heavy that the whole Red Frog Bar collapsed and the party kept going. And it never affected anybody. The bartenders were still making drinks even though the whole ceiling had caved in. Everything just dropped and they were still back there making drinks, keeping the party going. Like, it was such a good time and no one was hurt.

How is doing ShipRocked different from your normal cruise?

I will say this. I love my normal cruise, but ShipRocked is an energy that can never be matched because everyone here treats everyone like family. If you’re new, if you’re a survivor, if you haven’t been in a while, it doesn’t matter; it is a true family atmosphere here.

People are just so carefree about life. They’re just like, yeah, whatever. We’re just here to party, have a great time and the bands are just part of the family, too. They walk around, they greet everyone and they say hello, they hang out. I feel like the little brother to all these bands because they know me and they’re like, hey, and I’m like, hey, boo! I’m like, that’s my cousin. It’s just a great family atmosphere.

Cruise Director Cookie Talks Favorite ShipRocked Moments

What is your favorite food on the ship?

I’m on a diet. I’ve been on this diet for three years now. I haven’t seen any results, probably because I keep ordering room service. I will say from room service last night I ordered some chicken wings and some shrimp. At the end of every cruise, I go to Steakhouse and get the filet mignon cooked medium.

I love the molten chocolate cake.

Yo, have you been on the newer ships? Sweet baby Jesus. Get to these new restaurants we have coming in on Carnival . Like Chibang on the Celebration of Mardi Gras . Insane. Insanely good.

Cruise Director Cookie Talks Favorite ShipRocked Moments

Okay. Where are you from?

Born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama. But I just moved out of Houston, Texas. Now I’m trying to decide if I want to go to Georgia or California.

What’s the perfect day in Houston?

No traffic. Perfect day weather is under 100 degrees, under 80 degrees actually. I like when it rains. I’m the kind of guy that likes when it rains. Just cut the AC down, grab a blanket, put Netflix on and just chill, baby. Order Papa John’s, make it even better.

What’s your perfect vacation day, since your whole life is a vacation? I want your job, by the way.

Listen, you better be ready, because as you can see, we’ve been partying so much here that I have lost my voice. Just a chill day with my mom and dad. I don’t get to see them but like, twice a year. Just seeing my friends and family that I don’t get to see. We get together around a big table, laugh and catch up. I’m the one that’s always missing out, so that’s the perfect vacation day for me.

We love Cookie so much and can’t wait to see him again on the next Carnival cruise !

Check out Well-Liked Carnival Cruise Director Steps Down

A much-beloved cruise director at Carnival Cruise Line, Jonathan “Cookie” Adams, has decided to step down from his post.

Scores of supporters and past cruisers posted tributes about the upbeat and outgoing personality, who helped to make great Fun Ship experiences for many guests.

Jonathan “Cookie” Adams, a well-known and popular cruise director on Carnival Cruise Line ships, announced on social media on November 24, 2023, that he is leaving his position. Adams was due to begin an assignment onboard Mardi Gras in November, and remain on the ship until early February 2024.

“ Well… it comes with a heavy heart that I have officially decided to announce that I’m stepping down from my position as Cruise Director here at Carnival Cruise Lines. This was a decision made by me for me. No I wasn’t fired, no I wasn’t forced to do it, I decided after 9 years of giving myself to everyone around me it’s now time to focus on me and what I want for my next chapter, ” Jonathan “Cookie” Adams posted on social media .

The cruise director, who joined Carnival Cruise Line in 2014, thanked the cruise line and his fellow crew members.

“ To Carnival THANK YOU for allowing me to grow into this amazing human and accepting all aspects of me. To all of the cruisers THANK YOU for just loving and supporting every bit of “COOKIE” for the past 9 years. To my crew members, THANK YOU for showing me how beautiful this world can truly be and smashing every cruise with me, ” Adams said .

Scores of social media replies from friends and supporters show how much past cruisers admired and respected Adams.

Some said he was the best cruise director they had experienced, others said it was a big loss for the cruise line, and all wished him well. Carnival Cruise Line Brand Ambassador John Heald commented on social media about Adams’ decision to leave the line.

“You are incomparable. I wish you nothing but joy, happiness and spandex,” posted Heald .

Cruise directors are responsible for planning and implementing entertainment and activities for guests, such as stage productions, musical and cabaret events, and social programs, and for making sure everyone has a great time.

The well-liked cruise director joined Carnival Cruise Line in 2014 as cruise director and remained in the post on various ships until February 2020, when the pandemic hit.

With the cruise industry on its pause, Adams worked as a recreation coordinator at Margaritaville in Conroe, Texas. He returned to the cruise industry when ships began sailing in 2021, and was assigned to Carnival Breeze .

Adams was most recently serving as cruise director on Carnival Venezia , the brand’s first ship operating under the Fun Ship Italian Style concept. Carnival Venezia , a 4,200-guest ship that was transferred from Costa Cruises, entered service in 2019.

Following renovations to add Carnival Cruise Line’s Fun Ship concepts onboard, she began sailing under the Carnival brand in June 2023, offering year-round Caribbean voyages from New York.

Had he taken his Mardi Gras assignment, Adams would have joined the ship at her Port Canaveral homeport and sailed a series of Eastern Caribbean cruises during winter 2023-24. The ship can accommodate 6,500 guests — enough to keep any cruise director on his toes.

Carnival Cruise Line has made several cruise director changes in recent months. On November 9, 2023, the line announced the promotion of cruise director Chris “The Flying Scotsman” Williams to fleet cruise director.

Williams joined Chris “Donkey” Salazar and Mike Pack in the fleet cruise director position, which is a management and training post that interacts with cruise directors across the fleet.

Cookie New Cruise Director

Cool Cruiser

I just got off a wonderful New Years Cruise on the Liberty. I wanted to send a shout out for a great new Cruise Director “Cookie”. He is only 3 weeks new to the position and is doing a fantastic job. I have to say until this past cruise, a cruise director has never really impacted my feelings for a cruise except years ago with John Heald.

I think Carnival has a new superstar in the making. Watch out Matt! LOL

Thanks Cookie and Carnival for a great New Years Cruise.

That's great to hear...I'm on the Liberty in four weeks and he will still be the CD. He is replacing Donkey while he's on vacation until later in February so I hope he's assigned to another ship and continues as CD.

We also sailed Vista Transatlantic with Cookie. He was indeed an invaluable member of the entertainment crew. Carnival really picked the best of the best for that that sailing,

We sailed with MarQ, who was also on Vista TA, who is now a CD on Splendor, last February. I'm glad they have their own ships now, but to sail with them together again would be such a treat.

Turqoisblu

We sailed with Cookie on the Liberty also. He is amazing. Every where I turned the passengers was talking about him. He was so sweet he sent my mother in law a bottle of champagne to our cabin for he birthday. That was his firmest week of being a CD. We thought he was doing that for years the way he kept things going. You all should follow him on Facebook. He also helped me debark sooner being that I had a flight to catch. He is awesome.

Same here. Sailed the last med and the transatlantic with Cookie, MarkQ and Nono. Now we see that all 3 have been promoted to CD. Congrats to the new kids. Carnival how lucky you are to have Jaime, Matt and so many talented kids.

I forgot about Nono! What a sweetie!

Pam ~ nice to see you here. I wondered if you were doing the Horizon but see you aren't. Looks like a great HAL cruise you did, love those ports!

Great to hear. LOVE Cookie, sailed with him and Matt, on the Vista those two were the best combo ever. They were hilarious. I am so happy Cookie is now a CD he deserves it.

Hearing the news that Nono did get to be a CD is awesome I will now have to try and book a ship with her in the future. Matt told me he was really vouching for her to become one. What ship is she on?

TomCruise48

We were also on the Vista TA with Cookie. Still remember him/her at Matt's Halloween Morning Show dressed as a sexy policewoman wearing high heels. He upstaged both Matt and John Heald. First time that I saw John speechless with no comeback.

I also remember a guest came into the show dressed in a green graduation gown and cap. Any idea who that was, Pam?

Keys2Heaven

Don't know the person, never sailed with him, but it is always exciting to read how a great and outstanding CD really made someone's cruise. Hats off to Carnival by continuing to provide excellent talent onboard it's fleet!!

The schedules are fluid and may also have gaps that will be filled closer to the actual calendar date in the future. Many famous cruise directors are not currently on the assignment schedule. This often only means they may be on vacation leave or haven’t finalized a contract commitment yet.
