Your journey at a glance

Day 1: monasterboice - belfast.

We break our journey with a memorable photo stop at the ancient monastic settlement of 'Monasterboice'. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, the site is home to historic and ornately decorated Celtic crosses and a stunning round tower. You'll arrive into Belfast city center – where a wealth of historic and cultural highlights are waiting for you to experience. We highly recommend taking a ‘Black taxi' tour of Belfast – a fantastic city tour with an emphasis on the tough political history of Belfast. Expert, local guides will provide you with fascinating insights into the city's past troubles, taking you through key historic locations and giving an overview of how the North has overcome its past to become the thriving area that exists today. After the tour, your guide will be more than happy to recommend the best of the city's sightseeing, shopping and dining options for you to enjoy. Some of these include the Belfast City Hall, the vibrant University quarter and the Botanic Gardens. Your overnight stay will be here in Belfast, where you'll be sure to enjoy an evening packed with great food, music and nightlife!

Day 2: Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge - Giant's Causeway - Dunluce Castle - Derry - Letterkenny

Your second day of touring begins with a leisurely morning in Belfast, before you reunite with your guide to embark on a stunning journey through the Glens of Antrim en route to the Giant's Causeway. This route boasts incredible coastal views (visitors often spot the coast of Scotland off in the distance!). We'll make a stop in the picturesque village of Ballintoy – home to the famous 'Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge'. Whether or not you're brave enough to cross this ancient rope bridge – from either side you'll enjoy truly spectacular views. A short onward drive takes us as far as the one and only Giant's Causeway! This UNESCO world heritage site is one of the Island's most visited attractions, and is truly a once-in-a-lifetime sight. Thousands of hexagonal, basalt rock columns make up the causeway – which is believed to have been formed as the result of volcanic activity many millions of years ago. Legend however, dictates that ancient Celtic warrior Finn McCool constructed the causeway as a battleground for his encounter with Scottish giant Bennandonner! You'll have plenty of time to wander around the causeway, enjoying the sights and the fresh sea air, before taking some time to explore the visitor center. This brand new center features interesting exhibits and an outlet selling local designer wares. Departing from the Causeway, you'll set out for a short photo stop at the haunted and historic Dunluce Castle. The castle, which was once home to the notable 'McDonnell' family of Northern Ireland, is rumored to be haunted and lies in ruin amid picturesque landscapes. After enjoying a short stop at the castle, a short onward drive will take you to Derry city – an ancient town absolutely steeped in history. Enjoy your second overnight stay in Letterkenny, with boundless options for live music and fantastic food.

Day 3: Derry - Drumcliff Abbey - Sligo - Galway

Begin your third and final day of this memorable tour with a hearty breakfast and a fantastic, comprehensive walking tour of Derry with an expert, local guide. You'll learn the history behind the city and its official name of Londonderry. The city's charming ancient streets are the location of some of Northern Ireland's key historic events, including the devastating 'Bloody Sunday' massacre, which took place in 1972 (the event behind U2's hit song 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday'). Finishing up with your walking tour – you'll be taken to the fascinating 'Creevykeel' – an ancient pagan tomb, where you'll learn about the daily rituals of those that inhabited the area during the stone-age. We'll drive through the homeland of one of Ireland's best-loved artistic exports – the poet W.B. Yeats. This region greatly influenced his world-famous poetry and you will have the chance to visit his final resting place at Drumcliff Abbey. Your drive continues into Co. Sligo, where there'll be time to stretch your legs at the world-class Atlantic surfing beach of 'Strandhill'. The final leg of your journey takes you to Galway city. Galway is a vibrant and bohemian city and is deservedly in the running for the title of 'European Capital of Culture 2020'. Enjoy a wander through the charming ancient streets and sample some of the city's famous seafood before making your luxury chauffer transfer back to Dublin city.

3 day tour northern ireland from london

Planning out a Northern Ireland itinerary is an excellent option for those who want to see more of this area than a simple day trip along the Causeway Coastal Route or a day or two exploring Belfast.

If you have 3, 4 or 5 days to dedicate to exploring Northern Ireland, you can see a lot of the country and experience some of the island of Ireland’s most incredible scenery and learn about the heartbreaking recent history.

If you’re planning on visiting Northern Ireland and are curious about what to see and do here, this route will help you map out up to five days of exploring this corner of the United Kingdom.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Northern Ireland?

Before jumping into this route, you’re likely wondering how many days to spend in Northern Ireland. This can really depend on what kind of trip you’re after, however, if you’re interested in spending time in the city along with seeing the iconic natural sites, then plan to spend at least 3 days in Northern Ireland.

With 3 days, you will have the time to explore Belfast and learn about that city while also having time to get to take in the basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway and some of the other highlights of the Antrim Coast.

However, if you have 4 days in Northern Ireland, you will have more time to take your time on the Causeway Coast and to spend time at attractions other than the Giant’s Causeway.

For those who want quite a holistic experience, then plan to spend 5 days. This will allow you to add on a visit to the city of Derry and learn about the history here.

Getting To & Around Northern Ireland

There are a range of options available for you when it comes to arriving in Northern Ireland. First and foremost, Belfast is home to its own international airport that connects it to a number of destinations within the UK, Europe and further afield.

Though flying into Belfast is certainly an option, you will find that there are far more flight options going into Dublin airport. Dublin is located only about a 2-hour drive from Belfast and there are also lots of stops along the way . The two cities are also well-connected by bus or train.

It’s worth noting that there is no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and it is likely you won’t even notice that you’ve crossed. However, if you are driving, keep in mind that speed limits in Northern Ireland are listed in miles per hour while they’re listed in kilometres per hour in the republic.

It’s also possible to arrive into Belfast via ferry from Liverpool in England and from the village of Cairnryan in Scotland.

Once in Northern Ireland, you’ll be wondering how to get around whilst there. In Belfast and Derry, you can certainly plan to get around on foot and via public transport – in fact, it’s probably easier than planning on driving.

Those venturing outside of the cities have a couple of options. The easiest and most convenient option to get around is by having your own vehicle as it will give you the flexibility to visit where you want when you want without having to reckon with bus timetables and routes. Doing a Northern Ireland road trip is easygoing, fun and incredibly scenic and generally the most recommended option.

And if you’ve decided that a Northern Ireland road trip itinerary is the choice for you, you can browse car hire options on Rentalcars.com to compare prices across major companies.

However, you can also get around regional Northern Ireland by bus and train, where applicable. For instance, there is a regional bus system connecting the sites along the coastline so it is possible to travel independently in this area even if you don’t drive.

3, 4 or 5 Days in Northern Ireland Itinerary

Without further ado, here is how to spend 3 to 5 days exploring Northern Ireland. This route is meant to be built upon each day so if you’re only seeing Northern Ireland in 3 days, then plan to spend the first 2 in Belfast before heading onto the Causeway Coast. And if you’re spending 4 days, it’s best to leave a visit to Derry for another time.

Day 1 – Belfast

Begin your time in Northern Ireland in the capital city of Belfast . Though this city has a bit of a dark reputation and something of a rough-around-the-edges vibe, it’s very much worth exploring and it has a lot to offer visitors – especially for those interested in learning more about its recent history.

On your first day in Belfast, make sure to learn as much about the history of the city as possible by embarking on a black cab tour . On these tours, you can learn about the Troubles from knowledgeable guides and also get a good feel for the geography of this divided city.

After your tour, head to Belfast City Hall and then visit the historic Crumlin Road Gaol before rounding out your day.

Belfast City Hall

Where to Stay in Belfast

The Warren Belfast – Those looking for luxury will love this plush, centrally-located hotel in the heart of Belfast. They have several luxe rooms to choose from, great amenities, breakfast each morning and an unbeatable location in the Queen’s Quarter

Central Belfast Apartments: Citygate – If you’re looking for a self-catering option while visiting Belfast, then these apartments are the perfect choice. Centrally located, they have many fully-furnished flats available along with free parking for guests.

Day 2 – Belfast

On day 2, it’s time to visit one of the Northern Irish capital’s top museums – the Titanic Belfast. The infamous ocean liner was actually constructed in Belfast before it embarked on its fateful 1912 journey across the Atlantic.

This iceberg-shaped museum will take you through a range of exhibits explaining all there is to know about the Titanic and the history surrounding both the construction of the ship itself and also some information about the crash and its repercussions. It’s truly a great experience to have while in Belfast. You can book tickets in advance here.

Spend the rest of your day in Belfast exploring some of the sites that you didn’t make it to the first day. For instance, you can grab a bit to eat at St George’s Market, get the views from the Victoria Square Dome or even head to CS Lewis Square to take in some statues dedicated to the late children’s author and theologian.

The Titanic Belfast

Day 3 – Causeway Coast

On day 3 of this trip, it’s time to head out of the city and make your way to the north of the country – to the iconic Causeway Coast. We highly recommend leaving Belfast as early as possible to make it to the Giant’s Causeway before the tour buses arrive – it takes about an hour to drive here from the capital.

If you don’t have a car, there are a number of guided tour options such as this full-day tour or this full-day tour that will pick you up from Belfast in the morning.

The Giant’s Causeway is the name for a collection of roughly 40,000 hexagonal basalt columns that were likely formed as part of an ancient volcanic eruption.

However, in Irish myth, it is said to have been formed when an Irish giant built a causeway in order to fight a Scottish giant — there are similar rock formations on the island of Staffa just off the Hebridean Isle of Mull in Scotland.

Note that the Causeway is free to enter, however, it is not free to park at the visitor’s centre or go inside unless you’ve paid for that. If you’re up for a bit of a (beautiful) walk, we recommend parking at the Salmon Rock Beach car park in the town of Portballintrae and walking to the Giant’s Causeway – that way you can visit entirely for free!

The Giant's Causeway

Plan to spend a couple of hours at the Giant’s Causeway as there is more here than just the rock formations. Take the time to walk on all of the trails and really take in the views of this gorgeous place. It’s a truly spectacular experience and an essential inclusion on any Northern Ireland road trip itinerary.

After visiting the Giant’s Causeway, you can take the time to take in some other sites on the Northern Ireland Coast. Head over to the town of Bushmills and tour the Bushmills distillery. You can also make your way over to some viewpoints and maybe even go on a few more walks.

If you’re only spending 3 days in Northern Ireland and want to maximise your time here, you can take in some of the other sites in this area, such as the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge, Dunluce Castle and the Dark Hedges. However, if you are planning a 4- or 5-day itinerary, then you can take your time more at go at a slower pace.

End your day in the town of Portrush. This makes a great base in the area and the town itself is a popular seaside resort complete with its own amusement park and lovely beach. There are also plenty of pubs and restaurants to unwind in at the end of the day with a pint of Guinness and a good meal.

Portrush

Where to Stay on the Causeway Coast

Anvershiel House – Located in the town of Portrush, this bed and breakfast is an excellent mid-range option for those exploring this part of Northern Ireland. They offer several clean and bright rooms, an excellent breakfast available in the mornings, and a location within walking distance of the beach and town centre.

Elephant Rock Hotel – Those looking for a luxury hotel while on the Causeway Coast will love this chic hotel in Portrush. Centrally located, they have a range of lovely rooms to choose from, an on-site restaurant and bar along with plenty of other great amenities.

Causeway Hotel – If you’d like to stay within a stone’s throw of the Giant’s Causeway and see it without the tour buses, then this hotel is a great option. Located adjacent to the visitor’s centre, booking a night here will also grant you free entry to the centre along with plenty of other perks.

Day 4 – Causeway Coast

Those who have more time to devote to the Causeway Coast will be energised to hit the road early and start exploring again.

Start your day by touring the lovely and striking Dunluce Castle. This ruined castle is perched on striking cliffs not far at all from the town of Portrush and it makes for an excellent place to visit.

Next, you can make your way over to the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge. This place was used as a filming location for the HBO series Game of Thrones and it is now very popular amongst visitors – so make sure to book your tickets online in advance and also to arrive relatively early if you want to beat the crowds.

You can spend a fair amount of time hiking around here and it’s worth doing this on your second day so that you don’t feel rushed.

Of course, no visit to this area of Northern Ireland is complete without heading to the Dark Hedges. Again, this was used as a filming location for Game of Thrones and it is an incredibly popular tourist attraction. It’s simply a country laneway that is lined with intertwining trees.

Keep in mind that it is definitely a lot more beautiful in the late spring and summertime when there are leaves on the trees and it can seem a bit lacklustre in the winter to about mid-May.

The Dark Hedges

Day 5 – Derry

If you’ve got five days to devote to your Northern Ireland road trip, then make sure not to miss the city of Derry (Londonderry). As Northern Ireland’s second-largest city, Derry can be overlooked by visitors here, however, it has a lot to offer visitors and can provide important cultural context.

Though the city has been popularised as a destination because of the sitcom Derry Girls (you can even tour filming locations ), it doesn’t get the same amount of attention as Belfast.

Derry is a small city and you can certainly take in the majority of the sites and points of interest within the confines of a day. Take the time to walk the city walls – Derry is, in fact, the only walled city in Ireland and this is a great thing to do here.

Of course, no visit to Derry is really complete without taking the time to learn about the city’s more recent history and what life was like during the Troubles. You can visit the Bloody Sunday memorial to learn more about the 1972 massacre and you can also opt to take a walking tour of the Bogside murals with a knowledgeable local guide.

Those who want to learn even more about the city’s history will also find the Free Derry Museum interesting.

Another top Derry attraction is the Peace Bridge. The pedestrianised bridge connects the majority Unionist east side of the city to the majority Republican west side of the city and was meant to be an emblem of bridging the gap of a centuries-long political divide.

Peace Bridge in Derry

Have More Time?

If you have more time after this Northern Ireland itinerary, why not continue on from Derry into the Republic and visit County Donegal ?

If you’re coming from Northern Ireland and only have a day, then driving the Inishowen 100 is an excellent way to explore this part of northwestern Ireland. However, you could easily spend more time exploring this area, as well.

You can reach the town of Muff in County Donegal in about 15 minutes or you can drive north and take the ferry across Lough Foyle to the town of Greencastle. The latter option would also give you the opportunity to make a stop at Mussenden Temple.

For those who want to tour more of the Emerald Isle, then consider heading further south and enjoying some of (or the entirety of) the Wild Atlantic Wa y. County Donegal is absolutely gorgeous, but other highlights include Benbulben in County Sligo, Achill Island in County Mayo, Connemara in County Galway and more.

Views from the Inishowen Peninsula

When planning a trip to Northern Ireland, you may not realise just how much this small country has to offer visitors. From vibrant and historic cities to some of the most spectacular natural scenery there is to offer in this world, spending a few days exploring Northern Ireland is never a bad idea.

Hi, I enjoy reading your travel blogs and find them informative. Living in Northern Ireland I’d like to let you know that not only do we have an airport some 20 miles away from the city centre but there is also George Best Airport less than 2 miles from the City Centre and is great for those arriving to the city for its convenience. Also please note that St George’s market is only open from Friday to Sunday . I have seen many disappointed tourists arrive to the market on other days only to find it closed. Finally if you are travelling from Britain and have a National Trust membership this will allow free entry at the Causeway centre and other attractions – their website would provide more detail.

Thanks for those insights, Barbara!

Thank you so much Barbara Would not have thought about our N T membership. We are thinking about driving, any suggestions??

Feel the Irish Spirit at St George's Market

Completed in 1896, St George’s Market is the last surviving Victorian market in Belfast and one of the oldest   Belfast attractions. Our top 5 things to do in Northern Ireland

We show you the best things to do in Belfast and beyond, from the ancient Derry City Walls to the spectacular natural columns of the Giant’s Causeway.

Ulster Museum

Located in the Botanic Gardens in Belfast, the Ulster Museum is a vast display of fine art, botany, geology, culture and local and European history. It’s the largest museum in Northern Ireland with everything from dinosaur skeletons to an ancient Egyptian mummy.

The Titanic Belfast is an incredible museum, dedicated to telling the story of the Titanic, from her design and construction in Belfast in the early 1900s to her disastrous voyage. Located in the Belfast docklands, where the original Titanic was launched, you can explore over nine interactive galleries.

Downpatrick

Down County Museum

We’ll take you back through 9,000 years of history at the Down County Museum, a former prison now dedicated to documenting the history of Downpatrick. You can visit the original cells used to house prisoners in the early 1800s, and learn the legendary history of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

Ardglass potted herring

This classic Northern Irish dish consists of Ardglass herrings rolled in a dish with vinegar, spice berries, raw onions, salt and pepper. It’s baked until the top of the fish becomes crispy, then served with crusty bread and butter to mop up the tasty juices.

One of the most well-loved dishes in Northern Ireland, Ulster fry is a traditional cooked breakfast with griddle breads (potato bread and soda bread fried until golden), small pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes and mushrooms, served with tea and toast.

Traditionally found in the north midlands such as Fermanagh and Donegal, Boxty is a Northern Irish potato pancake made with a blend of grated raw potatoes and cooked mashed potatoes with flour and buttermilk. Served with a smear of butter, this is a delicious favorite.

Best food in Northern Ireland

Our trips will let you in on the best places to try Northern Irish cuisine, filled with grilled bread, potato pancakes, bacon and sausages, and generous dollops of creamy butter.

What to pack for Northern Ireland

People packing for a tour

Water and windproof jacket

Northern Ireland is one of the wettest and windiest regions in Europe, with temperatures averaging just 15°C (59°F) in summer. Stay cosy with a sturdy jacket and warm layers.

A big appetite

With a hearty cuisine filled with delicious breads, meats, pancakes and potatoes in every form, you’ll need to bring your appetite for a tour of Northern Ireland.

Although the Republic of Ireland (the southern partition of Ireland) uses the Euro, Northern Ireland uses the Pound sterling, so you’ll need to change currencies at the border.

An adaptor plug

Voltage in Northern Ireland is 230V, and the sockets are of Type G, with standard British 3-pin plugs.

Northern Ireland is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world, and you’ll want to bring a camera to capture all of this wild beauty.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and reusable toiletry bottles.

a 'Welcome dinner' in ‘The Crown’

Belfast City Hall & City tour

[9am] Depart central Dublin. Pick up in one central location (for 2023 & 2024, the Leonardo Hotel at Christchurch Cathedral)

[10.30] Our first stop is the historic, and surprisingly - usually unvisited town of Drogheda. Destroyed by Oliver Cromwell in 1649. You’ll be hearing a lot about him on this tour, a lot!Visit the elaborate Chruch of St. Peter that resembles a grand medival Cathedral, maybe light a candle to invoke blessing on our travels and see the head of St. Oliver Plunkett (much different to the previous Oliver) who was hung, drawn and quartered in London in the year of Our Lord 1663 and whose head is preserved in an ornamental glass case beside the altar!

[11am] Coffee and a wee cream-bun on us!

[12 noon] Visit Monasterboice, glorious Monastic ruins deep in the countryside and lush farmland of County Louth. Learn of its majestic Round Tower and its famed Celtic-Christian High Crosses, the finest in Ireland. Your guide will help you recognise the messages and stories contained in the carvings. This is a truly special archeological site.

[2pm] Arrive in Belfast, the proud Northern capital. Free for lunch.

[3pm] We’ll enjoy a city tour and experience a good introduction to our temporary hometown, including the majestic Belfast City Hall.

[5pm] Check into our downtown hotel. Enjoy an included 'welcome dinner' together in the famous Victorian  ‘Crown Saloon’, maybe the most beautiful bar in the world!

Day 2: Belfast in-depth ‍ Highlights:

Queens University

[9.30am] After a delicious breakfast (perhaps you’ll try the traditional ‘Ulster Fry’) we will experience one of the most unique Belfast activities - the ‘Black Taxi tour’. Our hand-picked team of local black-cab drivers will bring us into the divided neighbourhoods of West Belfast. Learn of ‘the Troubles’, our 1969-1998 conflict which tore Northern Ireland apart, you’ll see the ‘Peace Wall’, the impactive political art and murals and all areas of political/historic interest. * note: every month the amount of actual London-style Black taxis in Belfast get fewer & fewer as drivers upgrade to more modern vehicles, which are not always Black! The tour will be as good as always, just not always guaranteed to be literally in a 'Black Taxi'.

[12noon]:  Visit Queens University Belfast. Free time for lunch

[1.30pm]: The afternoon is devoted to the epic Titanic Museum, voted the #1 visitor attraction in the world. (yes, the world!) . You’ll be amazed at this state of the art visitor centre, no expense has been spared to bring to life the story of one of the most famous ships in history, built in Belfast 1912.

[4pm]: Free time for shopping in Belfast’s Royal Victoria Avenue or sightseeing in gardens of City Hall, a short stroll from our hotel.

[7pm]: A free-evening to enjoy Belfast’s unique nightlife and meeting the lively locals.

Photo-stop at the Carrick a rede rope-bridge

Visit the famous Giants Causeway, UNESCO world heritage site

Tour Dunluce Castle

[9.30am]: After another tasty breakfast we’ll bid farewell to Belfast and take the scenic drive to the world-famous Antrim Coast, famed in song and story long before it hit the headlines as location for hit TV series ‘Game of Thrones’.

[11.30am]: Photostop at the carrick-a-rede rope bridge before we visit the masterpiece - the Giants Causeway, a UNESCO world heritage site and beautiful geological marvel. 60,000 Basalt pillars carved into hexagons by violent volcanic eruptions, though we’ll be happy to also share the story of how it was really built by Celtic Giant Finn McCool! Time to hike, enjoy the scenery, and explore the impressive interpretive centre.

[1pm]: Free for lunch at the Giants Causeway

[2pm]: Tour Dunluce Castle, ancestral home of the McDonnell clan and one of the most haunting ruins anywhere in Europe. Glorious scenery.

[4.30pm]: Arrive in historic Derry (founded 546 AD by St. Columba), aka Londonderry (1613). A walking tour around the city walls is the perfect introduction to Ireland’s most historic city.

[6pm] Check into our city-centre hotel and enjoy free time in Historic Derry.  Evening free for dinner, but we offer an evening of music in Peadar O’Donnells historic pub, which  Tour-Guests enjoy immensely due to our subtle small-group size, a great chance to meet the locals.

Day 4: Derry & Donegal in-depth ‍ Highlights:

[10am] Our daily offering of authentic Irish experiences and activities begins with a visit to the Guildhall, Derry’s ornate city hall that resembles a Cathedral, complete with the largest organ in Ireland.

[11am] We’ll depart on the coach for our fun, relaxing day trip to beautiful Donegal. A short drive over the border.

[12noon] Visit Glenveagh National Park. We’ll tour the castle and you’ll have free time to roam its lakeside lush gardens carved from this rugged Irish valley.

[2pm] Photo-stop atidyllic Slane Castle on the banks of the River Boyne, learn of the Battle of the Boyne (1690) fought long the Riverbank between Catholic James II and his Protestant nephew (and son-in-law) William of Orange.

3 day tour northern ireland from london

Best of Belfast, Northern Ireland in 3 days

Belfast is Northern Ireland’s capital and is said to be the birthplace of Titanic. It’s a great place to explore attractions such as Victorian structures, Titanic Quarter, and the WWI warship that became a floating museum. Known for its shipbuilding industry, Belfast is also full of historical attractions, ancient churches and major monuments. It’s a long way to come for just 3 days, but if that’s all you can spare, then this 3-day suggested itinerary will be very useful. There are of course numerous other destinations in this city so you might want to mix and match the suggestions below to create your own itinerary.

Things to know before traveling to Belfast:

Language – English and Irish are the two official languages of Northern Ireland. Since Northern Ireland has slowly turned into  a multi-cultural society, which is now clearly visible almost everywhere, you’ll often hear people on the street, shops and restaurants speaking just about anything from  Scots ( known as Ulster Scots ) to Chinese to Arabic.

Currency exchange – The official currency in Northern Ireland is the British Pound Sterling, which is the same currency used in Wales, Scotland, and England . Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks and Bureau de Change Kiosks which are located in the airports and city centers. It is also good to know that there are plentiful of ATMs available throughout the country so you will surely have easy access to cash. If you plan to use your credit card in Belfast or other parts of the United Kingdom, check with your bank if they have a “chip and pin” or “chip and signature” credit card. The United Kingdom uses the “chip and pin” for added security.

Etiquette – The Irish are modest, tolerant and independent people. They are reserved and they value privacy. Their country doesn’t seem very foreign to many visitors but it’s important to remember some do’s and dont’s to enjoy a faux pas free journey. As a visitor, you are expected to behave politely and dress appropriately. On meeting, ensure an eye contact with a firm handshake with all attendees. Do not forget to say please and thank you when out and about.

Safety and security – There is currently no nationwide security advisory in effect for Northern Ireland. Check your country’s travel advisory website to get the most up-to-date information for your personal safety abroad. Observe the same precautions with your personal safety and health as you would in any other country. Although most visits are trouble free, remain vigilant because petty crimes like pick pocketing and theft do occur. For medical emergencies, fire and police services, dial 999.

Where to stay – There are many types of holiday accommodation in Belfast, from luxury hotels to cheaper accommodation like youth hostels and bed and breakfast. There are also plenty of apartment rentals if you prefer the comfort and convenience of having your own place with cooking facilities. The most frequent question from first time travelers is, “What’s the best area to stay in when visiting Belfast?” Without a doubt, the best area to stay in is the central to get easy access to most attractions and to get more hotel options. The Cathedral Quarter and Queens Quarter are also excellent neighborhoods for either a quick weekend getaway or a longer visit in the city.

Hotels to consider in Belfast:

Merchant Hotel

The Fitzwilliam Hotel Belfast

Benedicts of Belfast

Premier Inn Belfast City Cathedral Quarter Hotel

Stormont Hotel

Getting Around – Belfast can be easily explored on foot or on a bicycle. You can either bike on your own or you can join one of the guided biking tours offered in the city. Also, traveling using public transportation in Belfast is relatively easy as all roads are well-maintained and the public transport system is one of Europe’s finest. If you want to wander a little further from the central, then you may get around using iLink, an integrated transport smart card from Translink, which provides unlimited bus and rail travel within 3 specified zones across Northern Ireland. You can purchase daily, weekly or monthly cards to experience convenient and safe travel. For more information, you may visit their official website .

Detailed itinerary: Best of Belfast, Northern Ireland in 3 days

Today starts your adventure in Belfast! Check into your chosen accommodation where you will be staying for three nights. Get settled and spend the morning in your hotel to rest a little. Then, set out this morning to see some of the most beautiful attractions in the city. Head to your fist destination, which is the Belfast City Hall , a Baroque Revival-style civic building located on the administrative heart of Belfast. Spend the rest of the morning at the Cathedral Quarter .

Belfast City Hall - Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

Reward yourself with a sumptuous lunch at one of the top-rated restaurants in Belfast such as the  Holohans Pantry . After lunch, continue your historic and cultural tour of the city. Anyone interested in natural and modern history should see the Ulster Museum . Another one you should not miss is the Titanic Belfast , a maritime museum which houses some extraordinary historic and artistic relics about the RMS Titanic , the world’s most famous ship. You may to spend as much time as possible here if you would like to explore the historic Slipways and the decks of the last remaining White Star vessel, the SS Nomadic .

Titanic Belfast

In the evening, you may watch a world class theatrical performance in the Grand Opera House . For performance schedule and ticket prices, visit their official website (https://www.goh.co.uk/opera).  You may also avail a guided tour of the Grand Opera House during the time when there are no performances or rehearsals. The opera house itself has a magnificent architecture with an equally interesting history. After your historic tour, make your way back to your hotel and get a good night sleep so you have energy for a whole day of adventure the next day.

On day 2, satisfy your hunger pangs with a morning visit to St George’s Market , open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. One of the oldest attractions in Belfast, the market is the best way to experience the city’s local cuisine. Most visitors might not know it but the city offers inexplicable variety of food worth trying. You can grab some pastries and coffee while listening to live music from local bands and solo artists.

In the afternoon, join a guided tour through Crumlin Road Gaol , a former 19th century Grade A prison. Guided tours, either private or public, are required as visitors cannot walk alone in the halls. This 70-minute guided tour will take you to the execution room, hanging cell, graveyard, hospital and Governor’s office.

Crumlin Road Gaol, Belfast

Your final day in the city can be spent on last-minute shopping and seeing those Belfast attractions that you haven’t yet had time for. You may also visit the legendary Irish landmarks featured in HBO’s TV series Game of Thrones ( and if you are a true GOT fans you should check out “3 days in the land of “ Game of Thrones”… aka Northern Ireland “ ). Even if you are not a Game of Thrones fan, the natural attractions in this area are worth visiting. On this tour, you will get a chance to visit the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge , Dark Hedges , Carrickfergus Castle and Cushendun Caves . Some tours also offer side trips to the Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast , a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Antrim plateau in Northern Ireland.

Causeway Coastal Route

Head back to your hotel, then to the airport in time to check in for your international flight home, or you may opt to continue traveling independently in Northern Ireland, or extend your stay in Belfast.

This is the end of our 3-day suggested itinerary. Remember, this is just a guide for planning and is in no way, shape or form, the only way to travel Belfast. There are several alternative routes of travel within the area and it will depend on your intended length of stay. Enjoy!

Good afternoon

How would you like a totally unique experience to offer to your customers travelling to Belfast in April 2020?

Belfast Operatic Company is performing Titanic the Musical from 28th April – 3 May 2020, in the TEC Building.

You may already be aware that the Grand Opera House, Belfast is closed for major renovations from January-October 2020, so …… Belfast Operatic Company are building our own 1,000 seat theatre in the TEC Building, Belfast to perform this show in the heart of Titanic, effectively bringing ‘Titanic’ within 100m of where it was designed and built. I also am happy to say that our show will also be included as part of the Titanic festival being held in Belfast during the month of April 2020.

The Company staged the Irish Premiere of the show at the Grand Opera House in 2005, sweeping the boards at the Association of Irish Musical Societies annual ceremony, and thrilling audiences and critics alike – a success they repeated in 2012 for the centenary of the ship’s sinking at a very special gala performance.

Would any of your multi day, private or overnight customers be interested in this absolutely unique experience?

Please check out our website for checking information or booking tickets – http://www.titanicthemusicalbelfast.co.uk/ or our Belfast Operatic Company facebook page.

Thank you for taking the time to read my email, please come back to me if you would like to discuss this, or indeed any further clarification.

Fancy a great craic? There’s plenty of it to be had in Northern Ireland.

Shouldered by the wild Atlantic with soul-stirring coastline, ancient castles, quaint wee villages and a vibrant metropolis that rivals cities twice its size, Northern Ireland is a true gem on the Emerald Isle. The country’s turbulent past means it hasn't always been a popular travel destination, but now we’re making up for lost time. Northern Ireland travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Northern Ireland?

Visas in the UK are granted on a UK wide basis, so if you’re coming from overseas and have been given a visa it will be valid for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Visa regulations are always subject to change, which is more likely after Britain's exit from the European Union (EU).

Citizens of the EU, Australia, Canada and the United States have visa-free access to Wales provided you meet the immigration rules. Learn more about visas on the   GOV.UK website .

How do I get to Northern Ireland?

If you’re travelling by air, the easiest airport to fly into is  Belfast International Airport  (BFS).

You can also fly into the smaller  George Belfast City Airport  (BHD) which is only three miles from the city centre.

The ferry is a good option if you’re travelling from Scotland or England and want to take your car.

If you’re coming from the Republic of Ireland, you can take the TransLink cross-border train from Dublin to Belfast Central Station.

Is tipping customary in Northern Ireland?

Tipping isn’t expected but if you’re happy with a meal or service, a tip is always appreciated. Rounding up a taxi fare is common.

What are some common sayings in Northern Ireland?

  • “Wee” = a word used (for pretty much everything!) but especially for small or cure things
  • “Craic” = a term used to describe a great time or a good laugh
  • “Bout ye?” = “How are you?”
  • “Buck eegit” = an endearing term for someone who is being or did something silly
  • “Houl yer whisht” = “please be quiet” or “shut up”
  • “Yoke” = a term used to describe an object, e.g. “Will you pass me that yoke (TV remote, hairbrush, glass, etc) over there?”
  • “Catch yourself on” = “Don’t be so ridiculous!”
  • “Baltic” = a term used when the weather is very cold, e.g. “It’s pure baltic outside this morning!”
  • “Aye” = “yes”
  • “Banter” = similar to craic, it’s a term used to describe having a good laugh

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Northern Ireland?

Mobile phone coverage is generally very good in most parts of Northern Ireland, but it might be patchy in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated before you arrive if travelling from overseas.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Cup of coffee = £2.50
  • Pint of beer = £4
  • Glass of wine = £4.00
  • Simple cafe lunch = £10
  • Nice meal in a restaurant = £30

Can I drink the water in Northern Ireland?

Drinking tap water is safe in England unless otherwise marked. We recommend bringing a refillable bottle with you to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles to do your bit for the environment.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Northern Ireland?

Major credit cards are widely accepted in shops and hotels in Northern Ireland. Smaller shops may not accept credit cards, so it’s never a bad idea to carry some cash for smaller items such as a coffee, or if you’re splitting bills with your group.

What is ATM access like in Northern Ireland?

ATMs are called cash machines or cashpoints in Northern Ireland.

You’ll see plenty of them on main streets and shopping centres.

You can use Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Plus, Amex and Cirrus at most cash machines, as well as international bank cash machines in bigger towns and cities.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Is Northern Ireland a safe destination for LGBTQI+ travellers?

Belfast is the most LGBTQI+ friendly destination in Northern Ireland with many social meeting places for the LGBTQI+ community.

Belfast is also home to the largest LGBTQI+ festival in Ireland. Some areas of the country such as smaller country towns might be more hostile to LGBTQI+ travellers.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   Smartraveller   before you travel.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

There are so many things to do in Northern Ireland. Here are my highlights from 3 days in the country.

You shouldn’t travel to the island of Ireland without driving the Causeway Coastal Route of Northern Ireland. It’s one of the greatest road trips you’ll ever take, and it’s easy to explore it on your own. There are so many memorable things to do in Northern Ireland.

Posts may be sponsored. Post contains affiliate links. I may be compensated if you make a purchase using my link.

By starting and ending your journey with city breaks in Belfast and Derry respectively, you’ll discover spectacular sights and unique gems that should not be missed.

Here’s how I spent three days in the Northern Ireland. With one day in Belfast, one day on a self drive tour of the Causeway Coastal Route , and one day in Derry, I’m sure you’ll quickly fall in love with the region just like I did.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Table of Contents

DAY 1: BELFAST

Although I always recommend devoting more time to a city if you have it, I managed to explore a few places within Belfast in a day .

TITANIC BELFAST

Rated as one of the best things to do in Northern Ireland, Belfast, and even all of Europe, I highly recommend checking out Titanic Belfast . This popular museum serves as a memorial to the ill-fated RMS Titanic , which sadly plunged to the bottom of the ocean in 1912.

Why is this Titanic attraction in Belfast? The Titanic was designed and built in the city. In fact, Titanic Belfast sits right on the site of the former Harland & Wolff shipyard, and you can wander around the original launching place before the Titanic headed out on her fateful journey.

Across nine interactive galleries, you can discover interesting facts and displays about the Titanic, from its conception to its demise. There’s even a ride partway through this self-guided museum tour.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Titanic Belfast 1 Olympic Way, Queens Road, Titanic Quarter, Belfast BT3 9EP See website for hours of operation

PEACE WALLS

Of all the things to do in Northern Ireland, I suggest viewing the Peace Walls of Belfast and the People’s Gallery in Derry to understand the struggles and challenges the people of Northern Ireland have faced over the years.

These walls were constructed during The Troubles as a barrier between the Nationalist and Loyalist communities in Belfast. Today, the walls are covered with striking murals depicting the violence and tumultuous times in Belfast and Northern Ireland.

Some murals also commemorate other historic events and movements throughout recent history. Take the time to wander around these city blocks and examine each mural thoughtfully.

Although I explored the Peace Walls on my own, I will take a Black Cab Tour upon my return to Belfast. Through the personal accounts of a tour guide, I know I’d learn way more than simply observing and learning details on my own.

WHERE TO EAT

I’m always seeking the best vegan and vegetarian options when I travel. In Belfast, there were no issues finding vegan meals at plant-based restaurants . Here are a couple of my favourite spots.

THE HONEST VEGAN

The Honest Vegan is the best restaurant for breakfast or lunch. Your options are healthy, vegan meals that don’t skimp on flavour. In addition to a chocolate smoothie, I devoured my noodle salad, which had tons of veggies, peanuts, and a delightful Asian-inspired dressing.

My dining partner ordered a vegan chili and cauliflower bites that looked equally as delicious.

The Honest Vegan 336 Lisburn Road Belfast BT9 6GH Website: The Honest Vegan

387 ORMEAU ROAD

Named after its own address, 387 Ormeau Road is my choice for a dinner establishment. While it’s also a cafe and a small grocery store, there are tons of choices for scrumptious meals at this casual restaurant.

I ordered a chickpea “tuna” sandwich with a side tempeh salad, along with a slice of cake for dessert.

There’s also smashed avocado toast, sausage rolls, burritos, soups, sandwiches, and they’re all vegan.

WHERE TO STAY

I spent one night in Belfast at the Clayton Hotel Belfast . Centrally located, it was a breeze to walk around the city to many attractions, such as the ones I listed above. It’s also easy to Uber around Belfast if you need to get somewhere farther away.

For a quiet and comfortable stay in a hotel where the staff treats you like family, I recommend checking out the Clayton Hotel Belfast.

Book your stay at the Clayton Hotel Belfast or read the reviews of other trusted travellers .

Interested to compare other hotels to the Clayton Hotel Belfast or stay somewhere completely different? You can search for hotels in your price range here .

DAY 2: CAUSEWAY COASTAL ROUTE

Yes, you can discover the entire Causeway Coastal Route in one day! I highly recommend renting a car in Ireland and exploring this region on your own.

There are many things to do in Northern Ireland along this expanse of coastal land, teeming with stunning natural scenery and interesting historical places. Plan to head out as early as possible to reach your first destination as the sun rises, and you’ll have plenty of time for the full experience.

THE DARK HEDGES

Admire this unique row of craggy trees, known as the Dark Hedges , as seen in Game of Thrones. It’s in the middle of the countryside, and it’s one of the prettiest country roads I’ve ever seen. Plan to get here as early as possible before the swarms of tourists and tour buses arrive. Not only will your pictures lack the crowds, but you’ll also be able to easily find a parking space.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

The Dark Hedges Bregagh Rd, Stranocum, Ballymoney BT53 8TP, UK

KINBANE CASTLE

It’s not so much the castle as the incredible scenery surrounding it that makes Kinbane Castle such a special place. I stumbled upon Kinbane Castle along the Causeway Coastal Route, and it’s a gem that you have to see.

Navigate the hiking path from the top of the cliffs to the rocky shores below before climbing the peninsula to the castle ruin grounds. You’ll feel on top of the world as you climb to the top of the vista, with views of the lush, rolling hills and the deep blue sea.

Hiking around Kinbane Castle quickly became one of my favourite things to do in Northern Ireland.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Kinbane Castle 81 Whitepark Rd, Ballycastle BT54 6LP, UK

CARRICK-A-REDE ROPE BRIDGE

Do you dare cross this swaying rope bridge? Suspended 100 feet in the air above the crashing waves, you’ll experience unforgettable scenery of this beautiful region if you don’t mind looking down!

Aim to arrive here as early as possible, as the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is a popular attraction. You don’t want to wait in a huge line-up to cross the bridge, so aim to get there for when it opens at 9:30am.

Once I walked across the bridge, I admired these gorgeous Irish landscapes as much as possible before I treated myself to another jaunt across the bridge back to the mainland.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge 119a Whitepark Rd Ballycastle BT54 6LS Northern Ireland, United Kingdom For hours & ticket info: National Trust Website

BALLYCASTLE & URSA MINOR

Stroll around the idyllic town of Ballycastle , home to brightly painted houses and a charming cafe called Ursa Minor.

Ursa Minor has the richest coffee, the softest baked bread, and some of the most delicious meals around. If you’re feeling a little chilly from wandering around the Causeway Coastal Route in the morning, don’t fret – order a hearty bowl of soup to warm yourself up.

From the decor to the tasty dishes, I was thoroughly wowed by Ursa Minor and only wish I could frequent this cute little cafe more often.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Ursa Minor 45 Ann St, Ballycastle BT54 6AA, UK

BALLINTOY HARBOUR

Wedged between the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and the Giant’s Causeway on your road trip of the Causeway Coastal Route, you’ll find Ballintoy Harbour . Not only is it another Game of Thrones filming location, but it’s one of the most breathtaking scenes on this entire journey.

I think Ballintoy Harbour was my favourite place among all the things to do in Northern Ireland. It was very serene, peaceful, and beautiful. The water was so calm, and no one else was really around. I studied the nearby massive rock formations and the tiny rocks that dotted the sand.

It’s one place I’d have no difficulty spending the entire day. I’d love to bring a book and a cup of coffee, and allow myself to become completely enraptured by the scenery over many hours.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Ballintoy Harbour Harbour Rd, Ballintoy, Ballycastle BT54 6NA, UK

WHITE BAY PARK

Beyond Ballintoy Harbour as you continue west along the Causeway Coastal Route, you’ll find a scenic outlook. There’s room to stop the car so you can fully take in your surroundings. Enjoy these panoramic views of White Bay Park.

It’s possible to hike from Ballintoy Harbour to White Bay Park, and I’d like to do this at some point in the future.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

DUNSEVERICK CASTLE

There’s not much left of Dunseverick Castle, but it’s worth a stop to learn about its history from a nearby historic plaque. Sadly, the main tower of Dunseverick Castle broke apart and tumbled to the sea below. However, Saint Patrick lived here in the 5th century, and it was once a mighty castle.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

GIANT’S CAUSEWAY

Perhaps the most famous stop on the Causeway Coastal Route, Giant’s Causeway is an impressive terrain to explore. It’s one of the top things to do in Northern Ireland. Wander around this famous site consisting of approximately 40,000 interlocking basalt columns of varying heights.

Giant’s Causeway formed after an ancient volcanic eruption, although there’s a local legend involving a duel between giants that ultimately created these hexagonal rocks.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a phenomenon of nature, you simply must stop here on your road trip of Northern Ireland.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Giant’s Causeway 44 Causeway Rd, Bushmills BT57 8SU, UK

DUNLUCE CASTLE

Dunluce Castle is the site of medieval castle ruins in Northern Ireland. Surrounded by steep cliffs, it functioned as a home and a strategically placed fort. The ruins are largely in tact, with only a section of the kitchen collapsing into the sea (and taking staff members down with it, back in the day).

It’s another filming location of Game of Thrones as the great castle of Pyke.

Wander around the castle grounds, take a trip to the top of the tower ruins, and soak up the stunning views all around.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Dunluce Castle 87 Dunluce Rd, Bushmills BT57 8UY, UK

DOWNHILL DEMESNE

Downhill Demesne is a massive estate, including the ruins of the Downhill House, the gardens, and the Mussenden Temple. The ruins of the home are impressive, although I loved the architecture of the temple the most. Based on the Italian Temple of Vista, Mussenden Temple sits on the edge of the escarpment, overlooking a beautiful beach.

Although the site was quite deserted when we walked around, I’d love to return sometime to see inside the temple itself (only by guided tour).

Looking for more pictures? Check out my entire travel photo album of the Causeway Coastal Route .

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Downhill Demesne 107 Sea Rd, Castlerock BT51 4TW, UK

At last, you’ll end up in the city of Derry after a day exploring the Causeway Coastal Route. My best recommendation for a restaurant for dinner is Browns Restaurant at Bonds Hill in Derry.

With meals to satisfy both omnivores and vegans alike, this upscale establishment will satisfy your hunger and delight your senses. Through artful presentation and perfectly seasoned dishes, you’ll rave all night about the delicious meal you enjoyed at Browns Restaurant.

There’s a separate vegetarian menu with the vegan options clearly marked.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Browns Bonds Hill 1 Bonds Hill, Londonderry BT47 6DW Northern Ireland UK

I stayed at Bridge Bed & Breakfast , right across the bridge as you enter downtown Derry. From the moment I arrived, I was made to feel like a member of the family. The property and my room was comfortable, clean, and quiet. The owners even ensured that a traditional vegan Irish breakfast was prepared in the morning, and they’re happy to cater to any special diets.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Be sure to book your stay at Bridge B&B or read more reviews from trusted travellers around the world. If you’d like to take a look at other hotels in Derry within various price ranges, here is a full list of Derry accommodations .

Bridge B&B 3 Dacre Terrace, Londonderry BT48 6JU, UK

DAY 3: DERRY

Just as Belfast deserves some extra time, you should spend more time in Derry to fully appreciate it. While I didn’t get the chance to spend even 24 hours in Derry, I highly recommend that you visit a few key places around town to gain a better understanding of its history.

Staying overnight and spending time in Derry topped my list of things to do in Northern Ireland. The people of Derry are really friendly (as are most people in Ireland), so I suggest that you speak to the locals should you have any questions.

WANDER THE WALLS

Did you know that Derry is the only city in Ireland / Northern Ireland with fortification walls that remain fully intact? You can gain unique vantage points from up on the walls, and I suggest walking around the entire perimetre of the walls. There are cannons, scenic viewpoints, and interesting buildings to see on the way.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

THE PEOPLE’S GALLERY

In the Bogside neighbourhood, the People’s Gallery is one of the most poignant collections of street art in the world. These murals on the sides of building are a testament to the resilience of Derry’s citizens and what they’ve collectively endured for decades.

Key events from The Troubles in Derry are depicted, including scenes of violence that resulted in the death of innocent people. Not only do the murals commemorate these happenings, but they showcase that Derry is working towards peaceful resolutions.

As an outsider, I gained a small window of understanding to Derry’s troubled past through these displays of public art.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

FREE DERRY CORNER

As you’re viewing the People’s Gallery, you’ll discover the Free Derry Corner. The sign is all that remains of a row of homes, marking a self-declared nationalist region of town from 1969 to 1972.

The Free Derry sign is often painted with additional messages on it nowadays, aligning the city with various political movements around the world.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

DERRY PEACE BRIDGE

The Derry Peace Bridge is a pedestrian bridge that connects two areas of town that are separated by the River Foyle. Historically, the river divided the Protestant Waterside and the Nationalist Bogside, but this bridge unites both neighbourhoods and political sides.

The Peace Bridge is another symbol in town of the unification of these communities, allowing people to freely move back and forth.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

EXPLORE THE TOWN

I urge you to wander around town and explore on your own two feet. You’ll stumble upon ancient cemeteries and churches, shops, pubs, unique architecture, and all the town has to offer. One of my favourite things to do in a new place is walk around the streets of a city, and Derry is very walkable.

Take a few hours to try the local restaurants, pubs, and cafes. Poke your head into neighbourhood shops, and take photographs around town.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

If you’re looking for a lunch spot after you’ve enjoyed your yummy homemade breakfast at Bridge B&B, I suggest checking out Hidden City Cafe . There’s a full salad bar with intriguing options, as well as sandwiches and even desserts. Hidden City Cafe has lots of vegan options, and most of their meals are vegetarian (if not fully vegan).

I sampled some salads and took a seitan and onion sandwich to go, as it ended up being the perfect picnic meal to satisfy my hunger on the road.

Things to Do in Northern Ireland - 3 Day Itinerary

Hidden City Cafe 3-5 London St Derry BT48 6RQ Northern Ireland

If you’re looking for more restaurants to try, be sure to check out my vegan dining guide to Derry .

While you could choose to stay another night at Bridge B&B, I decided to venture on to new places beyond Northern Ireland by late afternoon.

Looking for more photos of Derry? Check out my entire Derry travel photo album .

Hi Lauren Can you let me know if it is advisable to hire a car in dublin and drop it off at belfast? I have heard that its not advisable! What do you suggest please

Lauren Yakiwchuk

Sunday 1st of January 2023

Hi Lorri! While I haven't done that personally, I don't see any problem with it! You can drive freely between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The only issue may be that there is usually an extra cost if you pick up and drop off your car in two different locations, even within the same city. I am sure you can do this though, no problem at all.

Wow, what great things to do and see, and great photos! Besides the Giant's Causeway, the Downhill Demesne is someplace we'd love to explore. So much to do, though - You packed a lot into three days! #WeekendWanderlust

Wednesday 31st of January 2018

I've never been to Ireland, though I'm really hoping to rectify that this year. I'm not in to Games of Thrones, but they clearly chose places like the Dark Hedges because they are beautiful. And I didn't realize you could cover so much from Belfast in just a couple of days. This would be a perfect short getaway for me and my husband on one of his long weekends off of work.

Tuesday 30th of January 2018

Wow there is so much to do here, I'd love to take a couple of weeks to explore - it must have been hard to fit it all in 3 days! The Peace Walls in Belfast would be a must-visit for me; I remember some IRA bombings when I was younger (I'm English) so the peace is so much better for everyone in Ireland and the UK. Of course the Giant's Causeway is a must, and although it seems strange that a road with trees on has become such a huge attraction I would have to visit that too! :)

I went to Belfast a few years ago, but only saw the Titanic Museum and Giant's Causeway. It looks like there's a lot more I need to explore! The Causeway Coastal Route is such a beautiful route, and I'm bummed I didn't stop at the Dark Hedges because I now love GOT!

Day 1: Dublin - Transfer to Galway

The Doors of Dublin, Ireland

No trip to Ireland would be complete without visiting our capital city of Dublin – a city that combines centuries of fascinating history, a huge cast of influential and significant figures, and modern cafe culture, architecture, and fine dining options. Naturally, you’ll never find yourself short for a traditional bar to enjoy a Guinness or some fine Irish Whiskey either!

Your chauffeur will provide you with oral history and guide to as many of the famous sights of Dublin as you desire. We would recommend that you should visit:

O’Connell Street and the General Post Office (GPO)

Where the Proclamation was read on Easter Sunday 1916, for the very first time.

The oldest university in Ireland and where the hallowed ‘Book of Kells’ which dates back to 384AD is stored.

The Doors of Dublin

You’ll never see two identical doors as you wander through Dublin city, and their unique and colorful charm gives the city an unmistakable character.

The Guinness Storehouse

Pour your own pint of the black stuff in the Guinness Storehouse.

In the mid-afternoon and after a busy morning of touring Dublin’s delights, your driver-guide will take you across Ireland and to your accommodation in Galway City.

3 day tour northern ireland from london

Day 2: Galway - Cliffs of Moher - Killarney

Cliffs-of-Moher-Ireland-1

In the morning your driver-guide will collect you from your accommodation and begin the journey westwards to perhaps the most iconic site in all of Ireland – the majestic Cliffs of Moher.

Our first stop along the way will see us visit the fishing village of Kinvara and visit the remains of Dunguire Castle.

Take a moment to enjoy the magnificent scenic setting on the coast of the Atlantic, climb the tower house, and depending on what time you arrive there is the option to attend a medieval-style banquet in the castle complete with traditional entertainment!

After our medieval experience, it’s time to get out into nature by making a stop in The Burren – A limestone wonderland formed millions of years ago and home to 75% of Ireland’s native flora. The Burren is also a site with great historical significance and your guide will deliver you to Poulnabrone, the famous large Irish celtic crosses in Kilfenora, and other structures and relics dating from the Mesolithic era right through the Iron Age.

Take a break and enjoy a spot of lunch in the picturesque coastal village of Doolin. Tradition is the name of the game here, so be advised that you will not find any chain restaurants or modern coffee shops in the tiny little village, but your guide will direct you to the best places to enjoy a traditional Irish meal.

Onto the main event of the day, the world-renowned Cliffs of Moher. Neither words nor pictures can fully capture the power and grace of the Cliffs.

Rising over 200 meters high and spanning 8 kilometers along the wild Atlantic coast, the Cliffs provide stunning views of the Aran Islands with the ocean crashing below. Your chauffeur will be able to inform you of all the folklore and myths that surround this incredible testament to the beauty of nature.

It is not just the setting of the cliffs of Moher that will blow you away, fans of wildlife and bird watching will want to spend hours here appreciating the Puffins, razorbills, Kittiwakes and occasional peregrine Falcons that call the area home.

After visiting these magnificent natural sights it is time to head to Killarney for and to your accommodation for the evening.

Day 3: Dingle Peninsula - Ring of Kerry

the-ring-of-kerry

Ireland’s most westerly point, the Dingle Peninsula offers rugged scenery and astonishing views. Dingle is a Gaeltacht region and the first language is Irish, so you may need your driver guide’s assistance if you want to buy a souvenir from any of the local stores!

We will take the steep climb of Conor Pass to bask in the magnificent peak views and take our time to luxuriate the glory of the Slea Head drive – recently voted one of the top 100 most beautiful places in the world.

The Ring of Kerry is a circular driving route renowned for the breathtaking scenery and landscapes to be found. Among the many stunning locations your driver will introduce you to, you will surely wish to take the mountain pass up through Molls Gap, where you will see the staggering views of Skellig Island – a key location for the recent Star Wars films.

Optional Transfer to Dublin or Shannon Airport

You may choose to include a transfer that evening or the following day.

You stop in at the charming seaside town of Ballycastle for a wander and some lunch. After this, you'll pop down to see the impressive Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge before it's back on the road.

The crowning glory of this coastal drive is the awe-inspiring Giant’s Causeway, a place where history and myth collide spectacularly with raw geological power.

To finish off the day, you stop in at Bushmills Distillery for an optional tasting of their famous whiskey before a quick photo stop to see the dramatic Dunluce Castle.

  • Discover the vibrant cultural scene and rich history of Derry

And it’s also quickly becoming one of the most important artistic and cultural hubs in Northern Ireland. You’ve got free time to explore Derry for yourself or you can join an optional walking tour.

Next, you travel to the Ulster American Folk Park, where you can discover the story of emigration from Ulster to North America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Learn about the hardships these bold people had to face and the impact they made in the new land. Please note, due to the remote nature of the park, there is no alternative during this part of the tour.

In the late afternoon, you travel to Enniskillen, a small island town and your overnight base. Enjoy an evening stroll around this lovely area or discover the famous Irish charm as you chat with the locals in a cosy pub.

  • Spend the morning exploring Enniskillen Castle or get on an optional lake cruise

Then, you say farewell to the lovely island town and head to your next stop on the tour, Hillsborough Castle and its stunning gardens. Here, you get to discover ornamental grounds, tranquil woodlands, and charming glens that have been a joy to the Royal Family and thousands of visitors. If you fancy, you can choose to explore the beautiful state rooms of the castle and find out more about its fascinating history (tickets subject to availability) and even grab a bite to eat for lunch.

This is also where you join a new bus for the continuation of your tour to county Donegal. Your guides will help you transfer your luggage and introduce you to your new travelling companions.

From here you head to Donegal Town, your overnight stop for tonight. This town boasts a panoramic backdrop of the Blue Stack Mountains, plus plenty to do in town, including an array of restaurants for your dining options.

  • Head along the Wild Atlantic Way, one of the longest defined coastal routes in the world
  • Gaze upon the Slieve League Cliffs, some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe

Today you wrap yourself in wilderness as you journey along the wild Atlantic coast.

First are the Slieve League Cliffs that tumble down 600 metres to the unrestrained ocean. These impressive crags are among the highest in Europe and are steeped in legends.

The landscape continues to get wilder as you travel through the sparsely populated Irish-speaking communities. Taking a break from the coastal delights, the route takes you through a striking mountain pass at Glengesh to the picturesque village of Ardara for lunch.

Then, you continue to explore the Wild Atlantic Way and stop at locations graced with magnificent views of the rugged coast and islands, before travelling through the impressive Glenveagh National Park.

In the early evening, you arrive in Letterkenny, a vibrant town full of history and great traditional bars, where you spend two nights.

  • Reach the northern-most point of Ireland at the rugged headland of Malin Head
  • Drive along Mamore Gap, one of the most scenic drives in Ireland

Leaving Letterkenny the next morning, you head straight for Fort Dunree. This strategic clifftop fort is now also home to a military museum.

From here you travel along Mamore Gap, one of the most scenic drives in Ireland. Spend some time discovering the treasures found along the route, including a holy well devoted to St Eigne.

Next up you make your way to the lovely little town of Carndonagh for lunch. This market town boasts loads of pubs and restaurants, not to mention it’s the site of the Donagh Cross (or St. Patrick’s Cross).

After you’ve filled your belly, it’s up to Malin Head. This is the northern-most point of mainland Ireland and you should ensure your camera is ready to snap pictures of this wild and rugged headland.

After a quick comfort break, your adventure continues to Grianan of Aileach. This peculiar hilltop fort dates back to 1700 BC and has some breathtaking views. You then head back to Letterkenny for the night.

  • Discover the striking beauty and iconic location of Mussenden Temple
  • Relax with a beautiful view in the beach town of Portstewart

Today you travel back into Northern Ireland to admire the beauty of Mussenden Temple perched right on a cliff’s edge. This 18th-century temple was originally built to house the eccentric Earl Bishop’s library and is now one of the most photographed places in Ireland and a  Game of Thrones  location.

Our next stop is at the seaside town of Portstewart for a well-deserved lunch break where you have free time to explore.

And as our tour comes to a close, worry not - there are still beautiful things to see. We keep this final afternoon flexible and your driver-guide will find local spots to show off to you on your route back to Belfast.

Accommodation

Where does this tour stay overnight.

You stay one night in Portrush, one night in Enniskillen, one night in Donegal Town, and two nights in Letterkenny.

How can I book accommodation?

Accommodation is not included in the price of your tour. To book accommodation, there are two options: either Rabbie’s Tours can book it for you, or you can book your own. For information on how to do this, please see the ‘Accommodation’ tab on FAQ page HERE .

Alternatively, please email us your questions at [email protected] or call us on +44(0)131 226 3133.

Information you can find on the FAQ page, under the ‘Accommodation’ tab : types of accommodation, room types, the booking process, getting to and from your accommodation, and cancellation terms.

How much will the accommodation cost?

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Breakfast will be included unless otherwise noted. The type of breakfast provided will vary from place to place so you may receive either a full cooked breakfast, a continental style breakfast (E.g., toast, fruit, cereal), or a packed breakfast bag or tray (E.g., porridge pot, fruit, granola bar).

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

I have more questions, who can help me?

If you have any more questions, call us on +44(0)131 226 3133, email [email protected] , or check out our full FAQs .
