Introduction

657-278-2787 international.fullerton.edu

Associate Vice President for Extension and International Programs Christopher Swarat

Extension and International Programs partners with academic units to create and administer non-state-funded programs that extend Cal State Fullerton’s resources into the community and around the world. EIP administers degree programs, academic credit courses, certificate programs for professional development, programs and courses for educators, the Fullerton Arboretum, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary and Titan Youth Programs.

International Programs coordinates the university’s commitment to internationalization. The office initiates and administers contacts with partner institutions around the world in order to foster the exchange of faculty and students and coordinate international programming. Areas include Study Abroad and Exchange, University Semester Abroad, and International Student Services.

Degree Program and Degree Credit Courses

Winter session.

Winter Session provides further opportunity to complete a course and make progress toward graduation. It is held in December and January between the fall and spring semesters and includes many online, hybrid and face-to-face courses.

Students can view the Winter Session class schedule in Titan Online in late September, and registration begins by appointment in mid-October.

Summer Session

Summer Session provides an opportunity to complete courses required for graduation. Classes are offered in online, hybrid and face-to-face formats. CSUF students can view the class schedule in Titan Online in early March, and registration begins by appointment in late March.

Open University

Open University provides an opportunity for people not currently admitted to CSUF to enroll in undergraduate and graduate level classes on a space available basis during all academic terms (fall, spring, summer and winter). Registration is available to members of the general public, designated international students and students academically disqualified from CSUF.

Verification of English skill is required for any individual, regardless of citizenship, who has not attended, for at least three years, a school at the secondary level or beyond in which English was the principal language of instruction. Such students are required to score at or above the minimums on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 500 (PBT) or 6.1 (iBT) or 5.5 (IELTS). Verification of test scores must be presented when registering.

Registration is provided on a space available basis after priority registration of currently admitted CSUF students. A maximum of 24 credit units earned through Open University may count toward the cumulative units needed for a bachelor’s degree at CSUF. Credits earned through Open University may not be used to fulfill the residence requirement (30 units for the degree, 24 units in upper-division courses and 12 upper-division units in the major). For graduate degrees at CSUF, typically up to nine units of approved credits taken through Open University may apply, but for degrees which require more than 30 units, more units of credit may apply. Consult the graduate adviser of the program for further clarification on this.

Self-Support Degree Programs

EIP administers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in partnership with CSUF academic departments and colleges. These programs are self-supporting and have characteristics that differentiate them from their state-supported counterparts, including different class schedules or delivery modes, and/or are cohort-based.

Professional Development Programs

Professional development programs and classes provide opportunities for career advancement or career change and are connected to workforce needs. Programs combine academic content and practical, real-world training applicable to the workplace. Certificates may be awarded upon program completion.

Programs for Educators

EIP works closely with the College of Education to offer self-supporting professional development opportunities for K-12 educators and administrators.

Fullerton Arboretum

EIP administers the Fullerton Arboretum, which was dedicated in the fall of 1979 in a joint venture with the city of Fullerton. The 26-acre botanical garden is a living museum of rare plants from around the world. The ecologically arranged botanical collection depicts habitats from the desert to the tropics and offers a tranquil retreat from urban life. Arboretum facilities include the Visitor Center and the Orange County Agricultural and Nikkei Heritage Museum, the campus’s first “green” building. The arboretum also is home to Heritage House, a restored 19th-century dwelling, and serves as a cultural museum for north Orange County.

Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary

Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary is a 12-acre outdoor education center and nature preserve located in the heart of Modjeska Canyon, adjacent to the Cleveland National Forest. It is owned and operated by Cal State Fullerton and CSUF Extension and International Programs. Tucker Wildlife Sanctuary has a dual mission — to support science and environmental education and to act as a sanctuary for the preservation of local native habitats and wildlife. Tucker serves as a unique field-trip destination for college-level classes and K-12 schools. Tucker’s facilities include a natural-history interpretive center, a bird-observation porch, walking trails, relaxing picnic areas, a seasonal creek, an amphitheater and a gift shop. For more information, call 714-649-2760.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute develops and delivers classes for individuals who are retired, semi-retired or approaching retirement age to promote an active, healthy life. Programs include self-directed study groups, educational lectures, discussion groups, computer education, arts workshops, physical activities, special events, social activities and travel opportunities. Select classes, including Transitions in Retirement Essentials, are open to the public. They also maintain a library of Distance Learning Videos.

Titan Youth Programs for Children and Teens

Extension offers programs and classes for children and teens each summer. Art Camp provides an opportunity for participants ages 7-14 to explore a variety of art forms such as drawing, printmaking, painting and musical theater. In addition, educational courses and extended care options are available. Academic Camp offers multiple writing workshops and math courses while the Tech Camp includes several engineering courses from robotics to coding to mobile app development.

Study Abroad Opportunities for Students

The Cal State Fullerton strategic plan advocates for student participation in “international, service learning, internship, community engagement or other innovative instructional experiences that prepare students for professional endeavors in a global society.” Study abroad is a high-impact practice clearly aligned with this goal. Outcomes of this life-changing experience include development of analytical and critical thinking skills, cultural awareness, enhanced language skills, and a better understanding of oneself and the world. Students also develop global perspectives related to their field of study that enhance academic knowledge and professional development.

Cal State Fullerton offers a variety of study abroad options:

  • International Programs (“IP”) is the systemwide, yearlong study abroad program offered by the California State University
  • CSUF Exchange Programs include semesterlong study abroad experiences through bilateral agreements with partner institutions from around the world
  • Faculty-Led Study Abroad Programs include programs ranging in length from one week to one semester facilitated by CSUF faculty

Independent Study Abroad

Students are advised to start the planning process for their study abroad experience as early as possible and are invited to contact the Study Abroad Office for information and advisement. Careful planning will result in selection of the best program for the student and minimize any potential difficulties with transfer credit or financial aid. Call 657-278-2787 to schedule an appointment with a study abroad adviser. Students can also sign up for information sessions about specific programs, or visit  international.fullerton/study-abroad .

Pack Your Bags! Fourteen Students Receive Scholarship Funding to Study Abroad

Three diverse female scholarship winners, all with dark hair, appear on the right side of the image. The backdrop is an international monument.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a program that aims to help students in the U.S. fulfill their goal of studying abroad.

In October 2022, 19 students at Cal State Fullerton applied for the Gilman scholarship, and the results are in: 14 out of the 19 students were awarded! With funding from the scholarship, these students will be studying in their dream countries, including Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, France, England, Germany, Spain, Portugal and Israel.

“This scholarship changes lives and makes global programming financially attainable for so many of our students,” said Aileen Vickory, the Outbound Advisor for CSUF Study Abroad and Global Engagement (SAGE) who guided each student through the scholarship application process.

Vickory also provided 8 facts about studying abroad on CSU and CSUF programs and financial resources like the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship:

  • CSUF students study abroad every semester in countries like South Korea, Ghana, Mexico, Italy, France, Germany, the UK, Japan, Taiwan, etc., and pay the same CSUF tuition as their peers who do not study abroad.
  • Students can use their federal (e.g. Pell grant, SEOG, etc.) and state (State University Grant, Cal Grant A/B, Middle Class Scholarship, etc.) financial aid towards their programs. Summer financial aid is also available for eligible students and can be applied to summer programs.
  • If students are receiving CSU, CSUF, department, and/or ASI scholarships (e.g. President Scholars, Guardian Scholars, etc.), they can apply those funds toward their semester and yearlong programs.
  • Since students who participate on CSU and CSUF study abroad programs pay CSU tuition, if they are also receiving fee waivers (e.g. Cal Vet, Alan Pattee, Current or Former Foster Youth, CSU Employee, CSU Dependent, etc.), they can waive the same tuition on their semester and yearlong programs.
  • There are several scholarships like the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship that CSUF students apply for and earn. The national average for Gilman recipients is 1 in 4 applicants (25%) will receive a Gilman scholarship. For the past two application cycles, 3 in 4 applicants from CSUF (75%) received a Gilman scholarship with an average award amount of $3,785! The next Gilman application deadline for Summer 2023, Fall 2023, Academic Year 2023-2024, and Spring 2024 programs is March 9, 2023 at 11:59 (Pacific) .
  • In Summer 2022, one CSUF student studying abroad on a faculty-led summer program paid essentially nothing to participate in their study abroad program thanks to receiving a summer grant that covered the tuition and the Gilman scholarship that covered the remaining costs of the program.
  • CSUF students continue to save money even while abroad . Living, commuting, and going to school in Southern California is expensive. Here are what CSUF students recently had to say: a. A student who studied in South Korea for Fall 2021 said that she paid $1,500 for her dorm in Seoul for the entire semester. b. A student studying in the U.K. said that her mother told her they were saving about $300 a month by not having to give her gas money because she took public transportation in the U.K. c. A student who studied in Spain booked a flight to travel to Hungary (taxes and all) for about 9 Euros (less than $10 USD).
  • Additionally, and what is more important, is the return on investment students are getting when they study abroad. A common misconception is that studying abroad is “just a vacation/travel”, “just a party” or “not serious.” However, many CSUF students commute from home, and when they study abroad, they are leaving home for the first time. They have to pay bills, cook for themselves, navigate unfamiliar situations daily, travel, learn languages, set goals, budget, problem-solve, interact with people from all over the world, and more. CSUF students who study abroad or participate in one of our other global engagement programs are learning to thrive in a global environment.

Study Abroad/Away Instructions for H&SS Faculty

Faculty proposal submissions due: august 28, 2023 at noon.

  • Winter Session 2025 (3 programs, any location)
  • Spring or Fall Break (contact Associate Dean before proposing)
  • Summer 2025 (2 programs, any location excluding Spain, Germany, or Ghana—proposals for non-European and non-African locations will get preference)

Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty-Led Study Abroad and Away Programs

Every year, the College sponsors Study Abroad and Study Away Programs during the Winter, Spring and Summer sessions. During these programs, a faculty member teaches 1-3 courses of their choosing (ideally GE courses) at a domestic or international location to a group of CSUF students. These programs incorporate coursework and experiential activities to help students to immerse themselves in the culture of the chosen country.    Faculty may also propose teaching a one-week spring break program related to a spring course after consulting with Associate Dean.     Faculty are encouraged to apply to lead programs for two consecutive years. If faculty members are unable to commit to a second year, they are welcome to withdraw by Dean’s approval.

Email Dr. Jessica Stern to submit your proposal

Application Process And Criteria for the Inaugural African American Resource Center (AARC)

Application process and criteria for aarc-hss program.

In Summer 2024 HSS and the AARC will launch a joint Study Abroad Program. Our goal is to design and run a program that increases Black student participation in Study Abroad. The AARC-HSS Study Abroad Program should be designed around a question or theme that will guide students to deepen their understanding of black identities, creative expressions, histories, and/or cultures through an international experience. Example questions are: “What does it mean to be Black and abroad?” “How does global citizenship look from Black perspectives?” “How do people in different countries experience being Black?” “How does the Black identity differ or not from an African American Identity abroad?”

Your application for the AARC-HSS Program must include the following: Letter of interest, CV, a detailed syllabus for one of the courses proposed for your program, and a brief letter of support from your chair or coordinator.

In your letter of interest, please provide:

  • An overview of the program and how the coursework and excursions in the country will deepen students’ understanding of black identities, creative expressions, histories, and/or cultures through an international experience
  • Two examples of programs or workshops you would host in collaboration AARC in Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 to promote and prepare students for their abroad experience
  • A description of past study, research, or travel abroad experience that you believe prepares you to lead this study abroad program
  • A description of your experience working with students outside the classroom and/or in serving as an advisor and mentor to students

Applications will be evaluated by a committee comprising: the Chair of the HSS Student Abroad Committee, the Associate Dean of HSS, the HSS Experiential Learning Specialist, the Assistant Director of Diversity Education and Campus Partnerships within DIRC, a student representative from the AARC who is an HSS student, and an alumni representative from the AARC who was also an HSS student.

Criteria for selection include:

  • the extent to which your proposed program will deepen students’ understanding of black identities, creative expressions, histories, and/or cultures through an international experience
  • expressed commitment to work collaboratively with AARC and HSS to promote the program and prepare students for an abroad experience
  • demonstrated commitment to mentoring students

Application Process and Criteria

Your application must include the following: Letter of interest, CV, a detailed syllabus for one of the courses proposed for your program, and a brief letter of support from your chair or coordinator that addresses how leading the proposed program will contribute to your professional development.

In your letter of interest, please provide:

  • An overview of the program, including the courses you propose to teach and your target student audience (spring 2 courses / summer 1-2 courses / spring break 1 unit, 1 week course)
  • An explanation of how you would adapt your chosen courses for the location of your program
  • An explanation of how your program would provide students with significant opportunities for the development of global awareness, social justice, community or civic engagement, service learning, or undergraduate research
  • A description of past study, research, or travel abroad that you believe prepares you to lead a study abroad program
  • An overview of how the study abroad experience would contribute to your scholarship, pedagogy, and/or professional development

  Criteria for selection include:

  • the extent to which the study abroad location contributes to course objectives
  • the quality and feasibility of the proposal
  • the degree to which the program fosters global awareness, social justice, community/civic engagement, service-learning, or undergraduate researc
  • impact on faculty professional development   Proposals will be reviewed by the H&SS Study Abroad Committee.  In the event that a proposal is submitted by a member of the committee, that individual will recuse him/herself from committee deliberations for the specific program for which they applied. Faculty who plan to propose a program should try to avoid serving on the committee.  The committee will schedule interviews with applicants and advise the Dean on the relative merits of the proposals.  Final decisions will be made by the Dean.

2019 Programs

Opens in new window

  2018 Programs

2017 programs , college programs vs. university programs, csuf department programs (e.g. h&ss faculty-led programs).

One week to full semester programs created and managed directly by CSUF colleges in collaboration with departments and faculty. Participants pay CSUF tuition and fees as well as low program costs, and generally enroll in CSUF courses for added ease of credit toward their degree.

CSU International Programs

Yearlong exchanges offered by the California State University system. Participants pay CSU tuition and program fees and earn resident academic credit while studying at an affiliated host university or study center abroad.

CSUF Reciprocal Exchange Programs

Semester or yearlong exchanges with CSUF partner universities abroad. Participants pay the same tuition and fees they would at CSUF. Credits earned can be approved as major, minor, GE or elective courses.

Applying For Program Funding (e.g. CICE & IRA)

One of the biggest barriers against students who desire to study abroad or study away is money! The average cost to participate in a spring program is approximately $9,000 and $4,000 for a winter and summer program. CSUF tuition, round-trip airfare and daily meals are additional expenses. The student program fee solely covers housing, ground transportation, academic fieldtrips/excursions and 24/7 staff support from study abroad vendors.     To help reduce the program fee per student, it is expected that faculty apply for internal grants such as the Service-Learning Student Travel Grant and a grant provided by Instructionally Related Activities.

  • Support to increase access for students to international service-learning experiences and programming. Disbursement restrictions apply.
  • $500 (max 50%) of state allowed travel costs per student
  • Provides funding for educational experiences and activities directly related to courses offered at CSU, Fullerton.
  • Amount cannot exceed $1,500 for international; $750 for out-of-state domestic; $500 for in-state
  • To apply for funds, you will be required to complete a virtual orientation in September

Common Questions

Do I have to be an expert on the destination to apply? No.  Although specific in-country experience is highly valuable, it is only one of the elements that may help you succeed as a program leader    How should I prepare to submit a proposal for a new location? Before submitting a proposal, you are encouraged to discuss the feasibility of the proposed program with the HSS Dean’s Office.  To make an appointment, contact Jessica Stern at [email protected].    Do you have any examples of successful recent proposals? Yes!  Please contact Jessica Stern for recent proposals or view uploaded proposals under the “Previous Approved Faculty-Led Programs and Proposals” dropdown tab on this webpage.

What logistical support is provided?  Do I have to arrange for housing, transportation, etc?

CSUF partners with well-established study abroad providers such as American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) and WorldStrides (WS) to arrange housing, classroom space, in-country transportation, student support, and to identify and develop appropriate community engagement and/or service-learning sites and opportunities. Faculty program leaders will be consulted to ensure that these components of the program meet their needs.  The more involved faculty are, the more customized their program will be.     Can I work with a tour company to develop my program? After your program is chosen you will work with Jaycee Cover to find a provider.

How long are H&SS Study Abroad Programs? How many classes do I teach? Winter programs vary in duration from 2-3 weeks and usually include 3 units of instruction. Summer programs vary in duration, from 2.5 weeks to 6 weeks abroad.  H&SS-sponsored Summer Study Abroad programs usually include 6 units of instruction (2 courses).     The London program takes place for the entirety of the Spring Semester and includes 6-9 units of instruction (2-3 courses) and supervision of the HSS 350 Life and Culture course and HSS 495 Internship    For all programs, the instructional program may take place entirely abroad or it may include online or in-class instruction at CSUF in addition to an international component.  We highly recommend that you have some in-class instruction before you leave on your trip.   What might a Study Abroad course look like?

Study Abroad programs supported by H&SS are intended to provide students from any major the opportunity to engage deeply with questions and issues that draw from our core values: Civic Engagement, Social Justice, and Global Awareness.  Because they are intended to be open to all CSUF students, faculty are encouraged to submit proposals built around General Education courses that can draw students from multiple majors within and outside H&SS.  These courses should be appropriate for and tailored to the specific location for the program. In their applications, faculty members should clearly explain how their chosen course fits both their knowledge and the location. One course available to all Study Abroad programs is Humanities 350, Life and Culture Abroad.  Please do not propose to teach another department’s course unless you have already consulted with that department.    I will be on leave part of next year.  Can I still apply? Because it is very important for program leaders to be available to recruit students, faculty who will be on leave are not eligible to apply.

What are the responsibilities of the faculty?

  • Faculty must work with the Dean’s Office to develop the academic and cultural curriculum for their program. H&SS Study Abroad programs partner with well-established study abroad providers, such as American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) and WorldStrides (WS), for logistical support.
  • Faculty must vigorously participate in recruiting students for their program.  Recruiting includes the Fall and Spring CSUF Study Abroad Fairs, Information Sessions, and classroom visitations. The minimum program enrollment is typically 10 students.  The maximum enrollment varies by destination and type of program, but is typically 15-25 students.
  • Faculty are expected to apply for internal grants that can help support the program, such as IRA funding and CICE grants.

How are faculty compensated for Study Abroad programs? All College-sponsored programs provide faculty with airfare and housing, as well as a salary based on the number of courses being taught (typically 2 courses for Summer and 1 course for Winter; London faculty receive their full salary).  Housing is suitable for one person but may be upgraded to larger accommodations at the faculty member’s expense.     Can faculty bring family or friends/partners? Yes! Faculty may bring people with them, but all expenses for companions are the responsibility of them or the faculty member. Liability concerns may preclude family and/or friends from participating in school-related excursions and activities and travelling with the class on chartered vehicles. Neither the program fee that students pay nor the college will provide funding for anyone beyond the faculty member.

FAQs regarding FINANCIAL AID and STUDY ABROAD

PDF File

Q: How does the financial aid process work with study abroad?

A: The Study Abroad Coordinator collaborates with the Office of Financial Aid’s (OFA) Special Programs Counselor by sending a list of participants to the OFA along with estimates of the program costs. The Special Programs Counselor will review these costs, update students’ budgets with allowable educational expenses, and make any necessary adjustments to the student’s financial aid award. The student would be notified via campus email of any changes to their award. Studying abroad during summer/intercession is not advisable, as financial aid is typically not available.

Q: How will my financial aid award change if I study abroad?

A: It depends. For a majority of students, their financial aid award does not change. Examples of how your award may change are provided below:

  • For students participating in a Non-CSUF study abroad program, only federal aid is applicable towards study abroad costs (ex., Federal Pell Grant & Federal Direct Loan, etc.).
  • For students participating in a Chancellor’s Office – OR – a CSUF study abroad program, both state and federal aid is applicable towards study abroad costs (ex., State University Grant, Cal Grant, Federal Pell Grant, & Federal Direct Loan, etc.).

Please note: if your program costs are lower than the standard budget for attending CSUF during the semester, your financial aid eligibility and award may be reduced. In most cases, the program costs are higher than the standard budget and so your financial aid eligibility may potentially increase. Increased financial aid eligibility typically allows for you to borrow more loan funds. It does not usually increase your eligibility for grants.

Q: When will my financial aid pay out? Who will you send it to?

A: Based on federal regulations, accepted financial aid funds are released no earlier than 10 days prior to the session start date of your program for each term(s) abroad.

  • If you are participating in a Chancellor’s Office – OR – a CSUF program, your funds will normally be applied toward your tuition and fees. If your financial aid award exceeds the amount of your tuition and fees, the remaining funds would be sent to you via direct deposit or paper check.
  • If you are participating in a Non-CSUF program, your financial aid funds will be sent to you via direct deposit or paper check. Your program fees would not be deducted prior to disbursement, which means that you will be responsible for using the funds to pay for your program fees and educational expenses while abroad.

Q: What if I need more money to pay for study abroad program costs?

A: If your accepted financial aid award is not sufficient to cover your program and you are unable to pay out-of-pocket, you may consider borrowing outside alternative loans. You can apply for an alternative private loan through the lending institution/bank of your choice. If you are a dependent undergraduate, your parents may apply for a Federal PLUS loan on your behalf. If you are a graduate student, you may consider applying for a Federal Graduate PLUS loan. Learn more about, including how to apply for, a PLUS or Grad PLUS loan .

Q: How long can I study abroad and continue to receive financial aid?

A: There are limits to how many semesters you may use financial aid for study abroad purposes. If you anticipate studying abroad for an extended period (more than 1 year total), please contact the OFA at (657) 278-3125 or at our location UH-146.
