Live reviews

The Strokes are unquestionably one of the best bands out there, and you can really tell that they have been influenced by The Doors. I love The Doors and so I love The Strokes.

Just like Jim Morrison, the lead singer of The Strokes (Julian Casablancas) has an element of shyness to him. The band works together very well and they just look like they belong together: if you watch Fab Moretti (the drummer), he's always looking up and watching the other players really intensely. I really enjoy watching them play together and I love to see them live. They don’t talk to the audience much, and mainly just focus on playing, but they do make some contact with the audience. You can tell that their fans really love them and their concerts are always filled with good people.

Due to the fact that they are so popular they usually play for really large crowds, but if you are very lucky you can catch one of their smaller more intimate performances. I've only ever managed to see them with a large crowd, but I have to say it was still really fun. You get a much bigger atmosphere when there are more people; everyone is so excited, but Julian looks so cool and reserved in his leather coat and sunglasses.

Since I've been a fan of theirs (for more than 10 years), I really think that The Strokes are getting better over time and that is good because I want them to be around for a long time!

I was lucky enough to see the Strokes at Governor's Ball in 2014. It had been 3 years since legendary rock band The Strokes had played a show. They surprised New York with a pop up Governor's Ball pre-party show a week prior so it was their second show back after not touring their latest album. Either way, it felt just as special to be their first festival show in a while. I have never had a better concert experience than my Strokes show. Between exploding with "Barely Legal" and ending with "New York City Cops," all 5 albums were touched upon. Frontman Julian Casablancas is extremely confident in the best way possible. He interacted with the audience, sang every song perfectly and messed around with other bandmates during some songs. He even goofily covered Nikolai's eyes while dancing around stage. The fact that there were times when the crowd was singing guitar riffs louder than they were being played is a sign of an amazing show in my opinion. The crowd was on fire and it was obvious the Strokes fed off this energy in an amazing way.

If the Strokes come back for a real tour, do NOT miss out on the opportunity to see them; the show will be so good you'll get chills thinking about it even a month later.

It’s official: they’re back.

The Strokes played in Berlin their first show (in a venue) in Europe in 9 years with a solid combination of their 3 first records, one song from Come Down Machine and 2 new songs (The Adults are Talking and Bad Decisions).

They played with a great mood between them and we could see one of the best Casablancas, joking with the band and the crowd, even singing Last Nite jumping to the public.

I hope this is just the beginning and they play in more venues than during last 14 years.

As someone who grew up listening to The Strokes and holding this band in high regard, it kills me to say that this show was a major disappointment.

Nobody could hear Julian's vocals. I'm not sure if the instruments were too loud or if Julian's mic was indeed too loud, but the fact of the matter is that you could not hear Julian at all.

Besides that, the band themselves sounded awesome and seeing Albert go off during Last Nite was simply awesome. Singing along with the whole crowd to classics like 12:51, Reptillia, and Hard to Explain felt like a dream.

The Floor GA tickets were not cheap and considering the major flaw that basically ruined the show, I can't say I would ever go out of my way to see The Strokes again if they toured nearby.

I recently saw the Strokes at the Forum in LA. It twas my first time and they were tight. Julian's falsetto was on point and I got no complaints. I will definitely be seeing them again! We are lucky that they are still together.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs returned with their first album in nine years, Cool It Down , last September. The Strokes , meanwhile, last released a full-length record in early 2020 with the Rick Rubin -produced The New Abnormal . Julian Casablancas and co. made their debut appearance at All Points East in 2019, where their billing-topping show was marred by sound issues. YYYs returned to the UK for a brief run of dates in June 2022 , marking their first headline gigs on these shores in almost a decade. It was previously confirmed that Stormzy will also headline All Points East 2023, curating an entire day of acts under the banner ‘This Is What We Mean Day’ .

Announcing the show, the Croydon MC said: “I was thinking what’s next, cos we’ve done three O2s, shut that down. I said to the team, we gotta do something bigger, something better, something different. We were having back to back meetings, bouncing ideas. Then it hit me, I started jotting down ideas thinking – live band, need a live band. “August 2023, a summer time thing, outside, for the people, always for my people. So August 2023, Victoria Park, more info coming soon….This Is What We Mean Day. Hard.” Recently, Aphex Twin teased a possible appearance at All Points East’s Field Day event this year.

The Strokes Deliver Career-Spanning Set at London’s All Points East Amid Sound Issues: Concert Review

The Strokes

East London in 2023 felt more like New York City in 2003 on Friday night, as fans gathered in Victoria Park for a celebration of indie sleaze headed up by early-2000s garage rock mainstays the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Strokes .

After the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, fronted by a captivating Karen O, closed its set by dedicating “Maps” to the late Sinéad O’Connor, festival goers made the pilgrimage to the other side of the park to catch the night’s main attraction. The Strokes, who have been making the festival rounds this summer, last played the London event in 2019, and the crowd buzzed with anticipation to hear how the band’s set would begin.

However, the Strokes’ otherwise electric start was toned down by some sound issues, with chunks of the crowd chanting “Turn it up!” and taking to social media to express frustration with the volume of the mix. But, by the time the band got to “First Impressions of Earth” bangers “Juicebox” and “You Only Live Once” around 20 minutes in, the sound seemed to have somewhat evened out.

“Ode to the Mets” and “The Adults Are Talking” were the only songs the Strokes played from its most recent album, 2020’s “The New Abnormal,” instead devoting the majority of the set to the group’s first three records. Somewhat sadly, nothing was played from 2011’s “Angles,” but fans were treated to two cuts from the lo-fi “Comedown Machine.”

Returning after a moment for the encore, Casablancas haphazardly baptized himself with the contents of a red solo cup before launching into two tracks from the Strokes’ seminal debut: “Hard to Explain” and the titular “Is This It.” Though the band was ready to depart — Casablancas added a matter-of-fact “Yep!” after each occurrence of “Is this it” in the song’s chorus — the singer did declare London as “our second home or whatever” before exiting the stage.

The Strokes’ world-changing ‘Is This It’ at 20: “They had a ‘last gang in town’ mentality”

Sexy. Raw. Glamorous. The indie icons' debut inspired a generation to pick up guitars and cram themselves into skinny jeans – and the reverberations rippled far and wide, finds Rhian Daly

Portrait of The Strokes backstage at The Fillmore, San Francisco, California, USA on 16th October 2001, L-R Fabrizio Moretti, Albert Hammond Jr, Nick Valensi, Julian Casablancas and Nikolai Fraiture. (Photo by Anthony PIdgeon/Redferns)

O n July 30, 2001, The Strokes changed the world with the release of their debut album, ‘Is This It’. Read any account of alternative music from that time and, before that date, you’ll find despair, nu-metal and bland, uninspiring indie. With just one 36-minute record, the five New Yorkers upended everything and gave the world something to be excited about again. They sparked a whole new wave of bands you’d stake your colours to the mast for in the years following –  The Libertines , Arctic Monkeys and more – and became the group to beat.

Back at the end of 2000, The Strokes were just five guys in a band: Julian Casablancas, Albert Hammond Jr., Nick Valensi, Nikolai Fraiture and Fab Moretti. When producer Gordon Raphael went to see them at Manhattan’s Luna Lounge, he had no idea where things would end up. “There were two bands playing and I was mostly focused on two things – getting work for my studio, and I was looking at the parties they were playing because my band wanted a good promoter,” he recalls.

He handed Hammond Jr. a business card at the gig and told him he could make cheap demos. A few days later, the curly-haired guitarist visited him at Transporterraum, his studio in a basement under a methadone clinic in New York’s East Village. This wasn’t your typical high-end studio – its walls were covered in purple and red glitter, its doors silver and oddities like lamps made out of old dolls and microscopes lying on bookshelves littered around the place. “It just looked like the kind of place where creative people might want to hang out and the band responded well to that environment,” Raphael says.

Happy with the space, the whole band later stopped by the studio and recorded three tracks: ‘The Modern Age’, ‘Last Nite’ and ‘Barely Legal’. Sometime after they were done, Raphael ran into Hammond Jr on St Mark’s Place in the East Village and was given the news the songs were being released in the UK as ‘The Modern Age’ EP. He immediately offered to have the band come back in and “fix them up”, but was told that their new label, Rough Trade, like them just the way they were. “I was incredulous,” Raphael laughs. “That was the first thing I’d recorded that would be heard by the public. I was like, ‘Well, maybe I’ll be famous!’”

James Endeacott was the band’s A&R at Rough Trade and remembers hearing those infamous demos. “Geoff Travis played me ‘The Modern Age’ one morning and it was like hearing all your favourite records in one,” he says now. “It was exhilarating.”

Part of the producer’s surprise that the demos were being released as they were was because of their sound – lo-fi, rough around the edges, not at all polished. They’d been made in three days and were free from the usual overdubs and extra layers you’ll find on most modern music. But Rough Trade was right – the simplicity and unpretentiousness of the tracks was part of their appeal, helping them stand out as the antithesis to everything else around at the time.

Before the UK label snapped them up, Raphael had thought The Strokes were destined to be disappointed. “The songs were incredible and I was really impressed, but then I got sad for them in my heart,” he says. “I was like, ‘Don’t they know no one in New York will listen to them? If they take this music to a label they’re gonna throw it in the trash can as soon as they hear guitars. They’re just born 20 years too late.’”

Thankfully, the producer was wrong and, after a brief trip to the UK, The Strokes called him up again when they were beginning work on what would become ‘Is This It’. By this time, they’d also signed to RCA Records in the US, who wanted the band to work with a more established producer and it was decided they would try out Gil Norton, who’d been behind the controls for Pixies and Foo Fighters . When that didn’t work out, they returned to Transporterraum and Raphael. “Can you imagine how high I jumped in the air?” he smiles now. “I got this phone call out of the blue from Julian like, ‘Do you still have that studio? Well, can you record our album?’”

The sessions began more professionally, with the band and producer meeting to listen to the songs they had and discuss what they liked and where they wanted to go. Among their visions for the record were such gems as, “What if you went into the future and discovered a band from the past that you really liked – can we do that?” and, “You know what everyone’s doing in New York in the studio these days? That’s what we don’t want to do”.

“It was a very big thing at the time to make your studio look like a million dollars and see who could make the biggest production,” Raphael explains. “What they weren’t doing is taking a few microphones, have a bunch of boys go in a room and play their damn song. That’s how we came up with the original sound. But then Julian would come up with pearlers like, ‘When I listened to the drum sound you’ve got for Fab, it’s like the whole drum set is a yuppie and the hi-hat is the poor guy on the corner begging for spare change’.”

Although The Strokes’ persona might be one of scrappy, louche indie boys in leather jackets, they had a strong work ethic in the studio and were very particular about the songs they were making. It’s previously been reported that most of the songs on ‘Is This It’ were recorded only once, but Raphael contests that. “‘New York City Cops’ was played really perfectly the first time and then we did two more tries and went with the first take,” he says. “But that would happen rarely and sometimes things took an entire day, then they came back the next day to play it again.”

While Strokes-mania was starting to sweep the UK, the US were a little behind – particularly when it came to RCA. The label was unimpressed with the “unprofessional sound” of the recordings and gave the band’s manager Ryan Gentles a list of “big name producers” they’d prefer to be in charge. “I felt really threatened and really sad,” Raphael says, but a visit from Endeacott gave him more encouragement. “When he heard the original playback of what we’d done, he threw his hat up in the air. I thought, ‘He gets it, I’m not crazy.’”

“I went to New York for a few days when they were recording the album,” Endeacott recalls. “The first thing I heard was New York City Cops. I screamed with joy when I heard it. Gordon was the right person for the job and the band knew what they were doing.”

When ‘Is This It’ was released, it became even clearer that it wasn’t Raphael who had the problem when it came to The Strokes’ sound. The album immediately raced to the Number Two in the Official UK Albums Chart and their booking at Reading & Leeds 2001 on the Evening Sessions stage was upgraded to the main stage after it was thought too many people would be trying to get into the 8,000-capacity tent.

The momentum kept on building. Appearances on Saturday Night Live and The Letterman Show followed, and another trip to the UK saw them picking up their first awards. At the 2002 NME Awards, they collected our distinctive middle-finger-shaped gongs for Best New Act, Band Of The Year and Album Of The Year, while at the BRITs they took home Best International Newcomer. The latter made the changing of the guard in alternative music clear: Linkin Park were also nominated, but nu-metal had some new competition now.

A victory lap around the UK followed, culminating in two headline shows at London’s Brixton Academy. “By that point, the album had got even bigger and there was so much anticipation,” recalls Apple Music 1 host Matt Wilkinson, who was present at one of the shows. “I’ve never really seen Brixton go as mad for a new band before. Because they didn’t really have any other material, they had to play everything from ‘Is This It’, although I think they shuffled up the order. They were great – they had a real ‘last gang in town’ mentality about them.”

After that tour, things didn’t stop growing. Months later, The Strokes were back in the UK to play Reading & Leeds again, this time headlining the main stage and still with only one 36-minute album out in the world. The sets were nothing short of iconic, with a birthday singalong for Casablancas, a guest appearance on ‘New York City Cops’ by The White Stripes ’ Jack White and a golden performance from the best new band in the world.

Raphael has a theory as to just why ‘Is This It’ provoked such a huge response and resonated with so many people upon its release. “It gave a new vision and a new face to rock music,” he explains. “People tell me all over the world that when that record came out, they stopped listening to DJ music and bought a guitar and formed a band. For the first time, they heard guitar music that changed their minds – it could be cool if you wear those skinny jeans and play those amazing chords and do it like The Strokes.”

“People tell me that when that record came out, they stopped listening to DJ music and formed a band” – producer Gordon Raphael

For Wilkinson, their power came from being the opposite to the big bands who had come before them, like Oasis and Radiohead . “The difference with The Strokes were the songs were a lot quicker, which we really needed because Oasis had ushered in that thing of eight-minute songs, and they were shorter, sharper and referenced different people. No one was talking about The Velvet Underground and the Ramones before The Strokes came along – even The Clash weren’t a cool band to reference, weirdly. So suddenly you had this new book of references to go and discover and you also had this 10 out of 10 incredible album that just didn’t give a shit about anything else in the ‘90s.”

Even 20 years on, ‘Is This It’ and The Strokes are still having a big impact on young music fans and artists alike all around the world. Clairo and Billie Eilish have both given a nod to the New Yorkers in recent months through covers and interview comments, while the band’s influence on acts in their home city is still palpable.

Emir Mohseni, frontman of Brooklyn glam-psych group The Muckers , first discovered Thee Strokes as a 13-year-old watching TV at home in Tehran. The video for ‘Last Nite’ came on the channel he was watching with his brother and immediately blew him away. “I was a little shocked – there’s just five dudes playing guitar solos,” he remembers. “I thought rock’n’roll was dead! It was kind of old-school, that video, and I just thought, ‘This is very cool.’”

“every young musician playing rock’n’roll in Iran dreamt of being like The Strokes” – The Muckers’ frontman Emir Mohseni

In Iran, rock music isn’t as free to thrive because it’s un-Islamic. But Mohseni says anyone who as playing guitar and wanted to be in a band were into Casablancas and co. “There wasn’t a big fanbase because there’s no rock music there, but every young musician playing rock’n’roll was dreaming of being like The Strokes,” he explains.

Now a resident of New York, the musician moved to the city with big dreams of playing the Lower East Side’s Mercury Lounge – a favoured venue of The Strokes back in the day. “There were stories coming that The Strokes played this venue in New York City, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs played there and all these bands,” he recalls. “I was like, ‘Wow, this sounds like a good place!’”

Even though the band’s old haunts might not be the cool spots anymore, their sound, presence and energy still looms large across New York. “They belong to the city so much,” Mohseni nods. “Every fucking corner. And there’s a depth to that first album that everyone can relate to it – the words, or the beautiful guitars from Albert and Nick, Julian’s songwriting and the way he put down the lyrics. It’s still around and still alive.”

The Strokes

Raphael agrees that Casablancas’ songwriting is one of the reasons why ‘Is This It’ is still such a prominent force two decades on. “Nobody writes lyrics like that,” he says. “It’s so weird, and yet it resonates with you – you understand what he’s painting, but nobody else would say those actual things except for him.” Unique, enigmatic and really fucking cool – no wonder why we still can’t get enough of The Strokes’ era-defining and game-changing debut album.

The Strokes' Julian Casablancas sings into a microphone.

It’s time to tune your air guitars.

This August, The Strokes have two North American concerts lined up this August — and for fans wondering “Is This It,” we can confirm, it is.

First up, the legendary NYC band heads southwest to perform with opening act Weyes Blood at Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Monday, Aug. 14.

Five days later, they’ll return home for a one-off gig at Forest Hills, NY’s Forest Hills Stadium on Saturday, Aug. 19 with special guest singer Angel Olsen, comedian Seaton Smith and Promiseland aka Johann Rashid.

Need last-minute tickets to see Julian Casablancas belt out “Someday,” “Reptilia,” “Last Nite,” “12:51,” “You Only Live Once” and bangers from their 2021 Grammy-winning album “The New Abnormal?”

Well, it’s not too late.

Seats are available for both shows — they’re just not cheap.

The lowest price for the two concerts, at the time of publication, is $139 before fees on Vivid Seats.

That may have something to do with the scarcity of these shows; however, the good news is they may go down as the show dates approach.

All we know is the best way to find a deal is to keep refreshing this page .

By doing so, it’s very possible you just might find a bargain.

In the meantime, our team compiled everything you need to know about the Strokes’ brief August tour — from the best prices for each concert to set lists to details about the support acts — below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

The Strokes 2023 tour schedule

A complete breakdown of all the cheapest ticket prices for The Strokes two concerts on their mini-tour can be found right here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

The Strokes set list

Prior to these two concerts, the garage rockers have been touring overseas.

Here’s what they played live at their most recent headlining non-festival gig courtesy of Set List FM :

01.) “What Ever Happened?” 02.) “Bad Decisions” 03.) “Soma” 04.) “Juicebox” 05.) “Automatic Stop” 06.) “The Adults Are Talking” 07.) “Take It or Leave It” 08.) “Under Control” 09.) “Reptilia” 10.) “Call It Fate, Call It Karma” 11.) “Red Light” 12.) “Someday” 13.) “Ize of the World” Encore:

14.) “Hard to Explain” 15.) “You Only Live Once” 16.) “Last Nite”

The Strokes special guests

Weyes Blood is the brainchild of singer Natalie Laura Mering. Her nostalgic, yearning, lush and lo-fi music is the perfect complement to The Strokes’ brash rock. We recommend checking out her most-streamed song “Andromeda” for a sample of her sound.

Angel Olsen has a voice you can’t get out of your head. We mean that in a good way. Switching from bold to vulnerable — sometimes in a single track — she captivates listeners with her refreshingly honest vocals. While she’s more well-known for other songs, for us, we suggest starting with her incredible cover of Billy Idol’s “Eyes Without A Face.”

Seaton Smith wows audiences all over North America on a nightly basis. Now, the “Mulaney” actor (remember when John Mulaney had a sitcom on Fox?) and comic will deliver laughs poking fun at his past, society as a whole and maybe even throw in a little crowd work when he performs in Queens.

Promised Land wears many hats. Johann Rashid plays punk-like music, does performance art, and screens video at his live shows. These shows are not to be missed — he often leaves the stage with “broken ribs, bloody gashes, or jalapeno-infused tequila in his eyes” according to his bio . Gnarly.

Rock bands on tour in 2023

While The Strokes have just two shows lined up — as of now — many other groups have longer tours scheduled.

Here’s a quick look at a few other acts you won’t want to miss live these next few months.

Vampire Weekend: ‘mortality looms large’

Vampire Weekend: Only God Was Above Us review – their most adventurous set yet

(Columbia) Indian raga, hip-hop and scuzzy, Strokes-like rock replace the west African guitar sounds of old on Ezra Koenig and co’s dazzling fifth album

W hen Vampire Weekend emerged in the mid-00s they sounded like nothing else around, quoting unfashionable sources such as Minutemen and west African guitar sounds (via Paul Simon) alongside a barrage of knowing, Ivy-League lyrical reference points. Only God Was Above Us , their fifth studio album, is perhaps their most musically adventurous since that 2008 self-titled debut: a dazzling auditory romp that takes in feedback and distortion, arpeggiating pianos, curlicued orchestral pop, 90s hip-hop rhythms and levels of chef’s-kiss production detail best appreciated on headphones.

Has a Vampire Weekend song ever sounded less like Vampire Weekend than the dubby, cinematic synth-and-trumpet fantasia The Surfer ? Gen-X Cops out-Strokes the Strokes at their own grizzled New York scuzz-pop, while Mary Boone , tangentially named after a disgraced New York art dealer, has time for Indian raga and a choir. As ever, mortality looms large – the title comes, indirectly, from a survivor of an 80s American air disaster. But reckonings with the past – New York in the 80s, family trees, how “the cruel, with time, becomes classical” ( Classical ) – also run through singer Ezra Koenig ’s skein of allusions and heartfelt exhortations. Both Capricorn and Hope, the eight-minute closer, are about not trying so hard and letting go: wise, rather than clever words.

LET: unusual conclusion with three winners

T he Ladies European Tour concluded with an unusual ending as three winners emerged from a tournament played over just 18 holes due to inclement weather. The Australian Women's Classic, organized in collaboration with the WPGA Tour of Australasia, saw Danish golfer Nicole Broch Estrup, Taiwanese player Pei-Ying Tsai, and Australian Jess Whitting declared joint winners with scores of 66 (-6) strokes each

Let, results.

Rain rendered the Bonville Golf Resort (par 72) course in the city it's named after unplayable, forcing organizers to reduce the tournament from 54 to 36 holes.

However, adverse weather persisted, flooding the course again on the third day, leading to the cancellation of the Australian Women's Classic. Consequently, with only 18 holes played, the event was deemed unofficial by the LET, and no points were counted towards the money list.

Two Italian players participated, with Virginia Elena Carta finishing 11th with 69 (-3) strokes, while Alessandra Fanali placed 116th with 77 (+5) strokes. Fanali missed the cut as only the top 67 players advanced to the final round.

Behind the three leaders were English golfer Cara Gainer and Czech player Klara Davidson Spilova, tied for fourth with scores of 67 (-5). Korean Jeongmin Cho, Slovenian Ana Belac, Belgian Manon De Roey, Czech Sara Kouskova, and Swiss Chiara Tamburlini finished tied for sixth with scores of 68 (-4).

Filipino golfer Samantha Bruce didn't achieve a notable result, finishing 77th with 74 (+2) strokes. However, she did manage to score a remarkable "hole in one" on the 11th hole, a 145-yard par 3, hitting the ball directly into the cup from the tee.

The Ladies European Tour (LET) is a professional golf tour exclusively for women, established in 1978. Headquartered at Buckinghamshire Golf Club near London, England, it operates as a company limited by guarantee, a legal structure commonly adopted by UK-based sports organizations.

This structure allows the LET to prioritize maximizing returns for its members through prize money rather than generating profits for investors. The tour is overseen by a board of directors and a Players' Council.

AKSHAY BHATIA VALERO TEXAS OPEN

Akshay Bhatia fended off a birdie blitz from Denny McCarthy to secure the final spot at The Masters after completing a nerve-jangling wire-to-wire victory at the Valero Texas Open, with Rory McIlroy finishing an encouraging third in San Antonio.

Bhatia needed to win in Texas to earn an invite to Augusta National from Thursday and seemed poised to do that in routine fashion as he reached the turn six strokes clear of McCarthy.

However, McCarthy then reeled off eight birdies in nine holes, including on each of his last seven, to join Bhatia on 20 under par, coming home in 28 to sign for a nine-under 63 amid a masterclass on the greens which saw him tie the PGA Tour 72-hole record of just 92 putts.

McCarthy - who had already qualified for The Masters by dint of his world ranking - threatened to win the event in regulation time when he curled in a 12-footer at 18, only for Bhatia to sink from a similar range under immense pressure to force sudden death.

Bhatia, who began his final round with a four-shot advantage over McCarthy, birdied three of his first four holes to extend his lead and went out in a three-under 33.

The youngster then rebounded from a bogey at 10 with a birdie at 11 and picked up a further shot at 14 but was reeled in by McCarthy, whose scorching back nine included chipping in from off the green at 15.

McIlroy: I feel I'm in a better place

McIlroy, meanwhile, will make his 10th attempt at the career Grand Slam at The Masters as he looks to add the Green Jacket to his previous four major wins - the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championships, the 2011 US Open and 2014 Open Championship.

Rory McIlroy hits his drive on the 18th hole during the second round of the Texas Open

The world No 2 - who revealed last week that he sought the advice of Tiger Woods' former coach Butch Harmon ahead of The Masters - shot a six-under, bogey-free 66 on Sunday to end on 11 under for the tournament, nine strokes behind Bhatia and McCarthy.

McIlroy birdied his second and third holes and then picked up three gains in four holes midway through his round, before a final birdie at 18.

The Northern Irishman said: "It was very solid. It was a second bogey-free round of the week, which is really pleasing compared to what it has been like. It was good to get a round like that under the belt heading into next week.

"I definitely feel like I'm in a better place than I was a few weeks ago. Through the Florida swing there was just a lot of volatility in my game - some good, some bad, quite a few big numbers.

"I'm always going to be able to hit good shots, it's just how bad the bad ones are. This week the bad ones were still in play. I was able to scramble well enough when I did hit a few poor ones.

"To me next week is all about discipline, about staying in control of yourself and in control of what you can control. If I can do that well, then the rest will follow."

Ireland’s Leona Maguire advanced to the final of the T-Mobile Match Play with a dominant effort on Saturday in Las Vegas. Standing in her way of victory, however, is world number one Nelly Korda, who is seeking her fourth victory in a row on the tour.

Korda dispatched South Korea’s Narin An 4&3 in one semi-final, while Maguire ousted South Korea’s Sei Young Kim 3&2 at Shadow Creek Golf Course.

“[Maguire is] just so consistent,” Korda said. “Such a tough competitor. Really grinds out there. We’ve had a couple battles in Solheim Cups for sure. But I think it’s just going to be a grind tomorrow. I think it’ll be a lot of fun and nothing is going to be easy.”

“Nelly is the best in the world right now,” Maguire said. “She’s on a really hot streak. It’s been incredibly impressive what she’s been doing in the past few weeks.

“It’s going to be a really tough battle tomorrow,” she continued. “I’ve got a big challenge ahead of me. I’m excited. I mean, that’s why you practice. You want to play the best players in the world and that’s what Nelly is.”

Korda built an imposing early lead by playing even on the first three holes – all par-4s – while An struggled with bogeys. Korda birdied Nos. 6 and 7 to go up five holes.

An responded with a birdie while Korda bogeyed the par-4 No. 10, but Korda came right back with a par at No. 11 while An needed an extra stroke. An parred the par-3 No. 13 to gain a hole, but Korda clinched the semi-final by matching her at No. 14 (both bogeyed) and No. 15 (both parred).

“I played really solid at the start,” Korda said. “I think I shot 2-under on the front nine. Was just making a lot of pars and then gave myself two good looks at birdie, so I capitalised on that. ... Obviously, the back nine is a little tougher so [I] started to make a little bit more mistakes. Fatigue started setting in it just a little. Happy with the win.”

Maguire was up two on Kim on a par at the first hole and a birdie at No. 3. Kim birdied the par-5 No. 4 to cut her deficit, only to fall further behind when her opponent made pars at the par-5 No. 7 and at No. 10. Kim’s only other birdie came at No. 14, then Maguire parred Nos. 15 and 16 to close out the match.

In the quarter-finals, Maguire won by 4&3 over Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn, who had emerged from a four-player playoff on Friday to get to the weekend.

Korda topped fellow American Angel Yin 3&2 in their quarter-final match.

Kim had cruised past American Rose Zhang 6&5, and An edged Japan’s Minami Katsu 1Up in the other quarter-finals.

On the PGA Tour, Akshay Bhatia stayed ahead by four strokes, seeking a wire-to-wire victory at the Valero Texas Open. Rory McIlroy continued his solid week in preparation for the Masters, lying tied seventh after three rounds on five-under-par, but at 10 strokes behind the dominant Bhatia, his chances are slim on Sunday.

Feel the grip

A new Champs Spike System in the key 3 forefoot spike locations work with Cyclone Pro Tour spikes to offer exceptional traction in all conditions. They give your feet great grip on the ground when you're going all out for the pin.

Soft to the touch

Full-grain leather has a supple feel and sophisticated look. An internal strap stretches over then secures your foot, helping to contour to its shape.

All-round response

We stitched a Zoom Air unit directly to the upper instead of being set into foam, so it responds to every step. A full-length plate beneath the Air unit helps increase energy return. Soft foam under the heel delivers an extremely smooth ride.

More benefits

  • A moulded 3D collar helps you stay stabilised.
  • Internal foam pods cushion your heel.
