Melvins + Boris Each Playing a Classic Album in Full on 43-Date 2023 U.S. Tour

Melvins and Boris have just announced the "Twins of Evil" tour, a 43-date trek through the United States which will find each band playing one of their classic albums in full.

For Melvins, they'll be celebrating their 1991 underground classic  Bullhead , while Boris will perform all if 2002's Heavy Rocks , making it a can't-miss night for fans of sludgy, experimental heavy music. And it's just plain amusing that Boris, who named themselves after one of the standout cuts on  Bullhead , are appearing on this commemorative run.

“40 years as the Melvins!!! What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the ‘Twins of Evil' tour with our friends, Boris,” enthuses Melvins frontman/guitarist Buzz Osborne , “This will be a stone groove!”

Boris’ Takeshi (vocals, bass, guitar) adds, “Could anyone have predicted such an astonishing event, that Boris and the Melvins would tour the entire USA together? Since the mid-'80s, the Melvins have had an enormous influence on artists of all genres not only limited to heavy music, and have brought forth a surge of faithful followers over the years. Needless to say, Boris is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty Melvins, and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album, Bullhead .”

The Twins of Evil Tour kicks off in Los Angeles on Aug. 24 and will conclude in another California city, San Diego, on Oct. 14. Opening each night will be Mr. Phylzzz.

See the complete list of dates below and look for tickets to go on sale on June 9 at 10AM local time.

The Melvins and Boris announce Summer & Fall 2023 US co-Headlining Tour

The Melvins & Boris US Tour 2023 poster

“40 years as the Melvins!!! What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the ‘Twins of Evil Tour’ with our friends, Boris”, Buzz Osborne shares of a set that will see the iconic band perform the beloved Bullhead album in its entirety, as well as additional tracks across their discography. “This will be a stone groove!”…

Boris’ Takeshi adds: “Could anyone have predicted such an astonishing event, that Boris and the Melvins would tour the entire USA together? Since the mid-1980s, the Melvins have had an enormous influence on artists of all genres not only limited to heavy music, and have brought forth a surge of faithful followers over the years. Needless to say, Boris is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty Melvins, and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album, ‘Bullhead’”.

The Melvins have already had an eventful 40th anniversary year, recently wrapping up a stint on the Ipecac Geek Show tour with labelmates Mr. Bungle and Spotlights, before venturing overseas for the band’s first European outing since 2018. The group were also recently featured on a series of Revolver covers, marking their 1983 inception with a trio of portraits shot by Tool’s Adam Jones. Ipecac Recordings has spent the year highlighting previously released Melvins’ albums with quick-to-sell-out vinyl reissues. Currently available here are “Tres Cabrones”, “Houdini Live” 2005, and “The Bulls & The Bee”s + “Electroretard”.

Tickets for the “Twins of Evil Tour” are on-sale this Friday, June 9, at 10 am local time. Mr. Phylzzz opens on all dates.

About The Melvins

The Melvins are one of modern music’s most influential bands. Having formed in 1983 in Montesano, Washington, the group founded by singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne (with stalwart drummer Dale Crover joining the following year), has been credited with merging the worlds of punk rock and heavy music, forming a new subgenre all its own. Over the band’s 40-year history, they’ve released 30-plus original albums, numerous live full-lengths and far too many to count singles and rarities. In the course of their discography, they’ve partnered with Jello Biafra, Mudhoney, and Fantômas for individual releases and toured the world many times over. In fact, the band had the misfortune to be in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes. In 2012, the Melvins completed the “51 States in 51 Days” (50 states +DC) tour, which was chronicled in the film “Across The USA in 51 Days.” The current incarnation of the band is Osborne, Crover, and Steven McDonald (Redd Kross/OFF!). Previous line-ups include a pairing of Osborne and Crover with Big Business band members Jared Warren and Coady Willis, a four-piece featuring the current trio plus Butthole Surfers’ Jeff Pinkus, as well as Melvins Lite, which partners Osborne and Crover with Mr. Bungle’s Trevor Dunn. Sometimes, if you’re extra lucky, one version of the Melvins will open for the Melvins.

MELVINS and BORIS announce massive co-headlining tour

Boris Melvins split 1600x900

The Melvins have influenced countless bands throughout their 40-year history, and chief among them are the Japanese noise-metal veterans Boris , who literally got their name from a Melvins song.

That track, "Boris," appeared on the Seattle sludge-grunge pioneers' 1991 classic, Bullhead , and later this year, Melvins will be playing that album in full every night on a massive co-headlining tour with Boris themselves — who'll be playing their own fan-favorite, 2002's Heavy Rocks , at each stop.

The seven-week U.S. trek begins August 24th in L.A. and will travel throughout the entire country for nearly two months before wrapping up October 14th in San Diego. In addition to the aforementioned full-album performances, Melvins and Boris will also be playing other songs from throughout their prolific careers.

It sounds like a fucking blast, and tickets for the whole shebang go on sale Friday June 9th at 10 a.m. local time. See the full list of dates below.

THE MELVINS AND BORIS “TWINS OF EVIL” TOUR AT HOUSTON'S WAREHOUSE LIVE on October 2, 2023

  • October 6, 2023
  • International Concert Reviews

The Melvins and Boris performed to a nearly sold-out crowd at Houston’s Warehouse Live, and the audience absolutely loved every single minute. Houston’s Warehouse Live , a well-known Houston concert venue, has two stages; a larger ballroom where I’ve always seen and photographed artists, and a studio, with a smaller stage that serves a much more intimate crowd. Tonight, the Studio was the chosen site for the epic Melvins with Boris “Twins of Evil” tour. This was both good and bad; good because a packed venue is always exciting, but bad because I’m fairly certain there were people who wanted to see the show, but were turned away at the door. As I stood outside in the bag check line, I heard murmurs of “are there tickets left?” and “the Melvins? NO SH**!” Because the Studio at Warehouse Live only holds about 500 people, having a ticket for this show felt like winning the lottery.

People of all ages have loved the Melvins for decades, and it’s no wonder why. Even the Melvins’ front man Buzz Osborne is quoted as saying “this tour will be a stone groove”. And a stone groove it was. From the first note to the last, the Melvins had the audience completely mesmerized and fully immersed in the hills and valleys of sound for which they are most admired.

Starting the set was “Ligature”, followed quickly by “Your Blessened” and “It’s Shoved”. Osborne seemed in rare form (but isn’t that always the case?), and bassist Steve McDonald entertained us with his antics. I have to give a shout out to Coady Willis (sitting in for Dale Crover) – this man is a drum god. If you’ve never seen him play (and I don’t say this often), you are missing a phenom. It’s no wonder he’s in this band. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the Melvins. In typical fashion, moshing was permitted and was celebrated. Even in this small space, the crowd made room for a mosh pit, and it was glorious to see.

The set was rounded out by “Night Goat” and “Boris.” During the final moments of “Boris”, each band member slowly left the stage, one by one. Finally, it was only Osborne on stage, with his guitar and one stage light piercing through his wild blond hair. He continued to play, with the crowd’s attentiveness interrupted only by occasional shouts of “WE LOVE YOU”, which inspired him to continue playing for just a few more amazing moments. He gave a final bow to the crowd and after saying a hearty “Thank You!”, he swiftly left the stage. There are still a few dates left for this incredible show, and it would be a shame if you missed the opportunity to witness music history in the making.

After a short stage reset, Boris appeared on stage. Darkly lit and with heavy doses of fog and moody colors, the eerie setting was perfect for the highly theatrical threesome. An iconic band, Boris is yet another group of musicians whose music has survived the test of time. Formed in the early 90’s in Tokyo, Boris can best be described (as much as they protest categorization) as “experimental doom metal”. Their set was melodic, sometimes harsh, sometimes soft(er), but always powerfully heavy. Boris is a treat for the eyes and ears.

The trek will see both bands playing classic albums in their entirety

Melvins live

Later this summer, Melvins and Boris are mounting a co-headlining tour across the United States. The Twins of Evil trek kicks off on August 24 at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles and wraps up on October 14 at the House of Blues in San Diego. Mr. Phylzzz will serve as special guests at every show.

Melvins, continuing their 40th anniversary celebrations, will perform their classic album Bullhead in its entirety, while Japanese trio Boris will play their hit LP Heavy Rocks  all the way through.

“Forty years as the Melvins,” frontman Buzz Osborne exclaimed. “What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the Twins of Evil Tour with our friends, Boris. This will be a stone groove!”

Boris’ Takeshi adds, “Could anyone have predicted such an astonishing event, that Boris and the Melvins would tour the entire USA together? Since the mid-1980s, the Melvins have had an enormous influence on artists of all genres not only limited to heavy music, and have brought forth a surge of faithful followers over the years. Needless to say, Boris is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty Melvins, and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album,  Bullhead .”

Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 9, at 10am local time HERE .

King Buzzo, a.k.a. Buzz Osborne, is the singer, guitar player and founder of the enormously influential band, the Melvins. His innovative approach to songwriting, and guitar playing, has influenced countless musicians, and turned leagues of music lovers into ardent fans. Renowned for his pioneering use of down-tuned strings, Buzzo masterfully blended his punk and metal influences, and in turn, he created a groundbreaking new sound in heavy music. Over Osborne’s extensive career, which originated in the small hamlet of Montesano, Wash. in 1983, he has released over 30 albums under the Melvins’ moniker, two solo albums [Gift of Sacrifice (2020) and This Machine Kills Artists (2014)], as well as a number of collaborative projects including Fantômas and Crystal Fairy.

Trevor Dunn might be most widely known for his work with Mr. Bungle, the eclectic and unpredictable Northern California band he co-founded in 1985, but his career outside of Mr. Bungle has been just as notable. Also a member of Fantômas, Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant, Tomahawk and Melvins Lite, Dunn has also written music for various ensembles, performed extensively with John Zorn, and recently formed Riverworm Records , a label home for “discarded, forgotten, and misunderstood music.”

TARANTULA HEART - New Album announced for release April 19th, 2024

The Melvins latest opus, Tarantula Heart (April 19, Ipecac Recordings), is quite possibly the band’s most unconventional, catchiest and imaginative work yet, continuing a legacy celebrated for its eccentric and extraordinary output.

A preview of the five-song, 39-minute collection arrives with the release of “ Working The Ditch ,” and the accompanying Jesse Nieminen-created video . Nieminen previously directed the band’s short film, “A Walk With Love and Death.”

“The way we approached Tarantula Heart was different than any other Melvins’ album,” explains Buzz Osborne. “I had Dale and Roy Mayorga come in and play along with Steven and I to some riffs, then I took those sessions and figured out what parts would work and wrote new music to fit. This isn’t a studio approach we’ve ever taken. Usually we have the songs written BEFORE we start recording!”

“The majority of Tarantula Heart has dual drum parts,” adds long-time Melvins drummer Dale Crover. “Roy is an amazing drummer. We would discuss what we would do pattern wise, then we’d just go for it. Improvising riffs and trading off on drum fills.”

In actuality nothing appeared out of thin air. Buzz spent hours and hours with the drum tracks by himself writing songs to what he was hearing drum wise. “When the rest of the band heard these songs I’d created from the sessions, they were blown away,” Buzz shares. “These were fully developed new songs that they’d never heard before that had seemingly appeared out of thin air. Presto!”

Recorded, mixed and co-produced by longtime Melvins’ collaborator Toshi Kasai, the album also features We Are The Asteroid guitar player Gary Chester. Gary and the Melvins’ history goes back to their days on Boner Records, with the guitar player formerly having been a part of the legendary band, Ed Hall.

Tarantula Heart pre-orders are available now , with the album available on a trio of vinyl variants (black, indie exclusive Silver Streak and Ipecac Recordings’ 25th Anniversary Puke Green), featuring a 12-page booklet, as well as on CD and digitally.

Next month sees the Melvins head overseas, playing in Japan for the first time since 2019 following a stint where they join current labelmates, Mr. Bungle, for a trek across Australia and New Zealand. Buzz and Bungle bass player Trevor Dunn team up later this year for the “King Dunn Tour,” a 45-date excursion that sees the pair play songs from the King Buzzo releases: This Machine Kills Artists and Gift of Sacrifice. Matt Cameron (Pearl Jam/Soundgarden, etc) recorded a 5-song vinyl exclusive with Buzz, Dale, Steven and Toshi for Record Store Day – get it this Friday after Thanksgiving at your favorite local record store! More details at Revolver .

Matt says: "I have always been a massive Melvins fan. They are a huge influence on me as a musician and a big part of our early Seattle music scene. I reconnected with the Melvins in 2019 when they performed at the Chris Cornell tribute concert in LA. I emailed Buzz after and asked if he, Dale, Steven and Toshi could help record some songs I had written and they were totally up for it. I also collaborated with Nate Yaccino and Meagan Grandall on this project. I decided to pay tribute to the Melvins by reimagining the artwork/title for their seminal release Gluey Porch Treatments. Enjoy! "

About the Melvins: Melvins are one of modern music’s most influential bands. Having formed in 1983 in Montesano, Washington, the group founded by singer/guitar player Buzz Osborne (with stalwart drummer Dale Crover joining the following year), has been credited with merging the worlds of punk rock and heavy music, forming a new subgenre all its own. Over the band’s 40-year history, they’ve released 30-plus original albums, numerous live full-lengths, and far too many to count singles and rarities. In the course of their discography, they’ve partnered with Jello Biafra, Mudhoney, and Fantômas for individual releases and toured the world many times over. In fact, the band had the misfortune to be in both Christchurch and Tokyo for their 2011 earthquakes. In 2012, the Melvins completed the 51 States in 51 Days (50 states +DC) tour, which was chronicled in the film Across The USA in 51 Days . The current incarnation of the band is Osborne, Crover, and Steven McDonald (Redd Kross/OFF!).

What better way to celebrate that unlikely milestone than by setting off on the ‘Twins of Evil Tour’ with our friends, Boris,” Buzz Osborne shares of a set that will see the iconic band perform the beloved Bullhead album in its entirety, as well as additional tracks across their discography. “This will be a stone groove!”

Needless to say, Boris is just one of these many bands influenced by the mighty Melvins, and we took our name from a song title off of the 1991 album, Bullhead.”

Currently available (https://ipecac.lnk.to/Melvins2023) are Tres Cabrones, Houdini Live 2005, and The Bulls & The Bees + Electroretard.

Tickets for the “Twins of Evil Tour” are on-sale this Friday, June 9, at 10 am local time. Mr. Phylzzz opens on all dates.
