What is smart luggage?

line break

Smart luggage refers to suitcases with tech capabilities — typically USB ports to connect portable chargers for easy access. Some styles include their own portable chargers, while others require you to provide your own. Either way, you'll never have a dead phone while traveling. Make sure to bring a charging cable as no smart luggage picks include them. In addition to chargers, there are some newer suitcases with self-weighing options and tracking capabilities, but they have a much higher price tag and we've found they don't meet our standards for top performance. If those features are important to you, try a hand scale or a luggage tracker .

How we test smart luggage

line break

Our textile pros spend months reviewing luggage using standardized test methods and state-of-the-art lab equipment, then set up an obstacle course for users to try them out. In our latest evaluation, our pros tested 25 styles, leading to over 3,000 data points to analyze before making our selections . Here's how we rate the luggage in our evaluations:

✔️ Technology capabilities: Our pros try out each smart luggage's tech features and rate them for ease of use and accessibility.

✔️ Size and weight : Each piece of luggage is weighed when empty because we've found the online specs aren't always accurate. We then put the luggage in a 22" x 14"x 9" area to see if it complies with average airline carry-on restrictions.

✔️ Packing capabilities : Our analysts pack each piece of luggage using a standard load with real travel items like clothing, shoes, toiletries and more. In this process, we rate the ease of opening and closing the zippers, ease of accessing the compartments and how much of our load actually fits inside. We also make note of the important specifications, like the wheels, telescopic handle and any extra features. When the bag is fully packed, we practice rolling it over different surfaces and lifting it on and off countertops to get a feel of the handles.

✔️ Drop durability : Each carry-on is filled with a standard weight and loaded onto our drop tester, which releases the luggage from a three-foot height. The test is repeated in various directions, with damages and imperfections noted and scored throughout.

✔️ Abrasion resistance : Swatches of fabric are cut from softside luggage and loaded into our abrasion machine which rubs the fabric over an abrasive material 15,000 times before being graded for signs of wear.

✔️ Scratch resistance : A wire is dragged over hardside luggage material, then analysts visually assess scuffs and marks left behind.

✔️ Water resistance : Water is poured over the zipper. The amount of water that seeps through is measured by weighing blotting paper before and after it catches the liquid.

✔️ Consumer tests : Each carry-on case is filled with weight to mimic a real load, and a standard course is set up to cover a variety of surfaces and obstacles like going through twists and turns, lifting over curbs, transitioning to different flooring and more. Consumer testers then wheel the luggage through the course and rate the luggage on factors like ease of using the handles, comfort when pulling, sturdiness, wheel performance and maneuverability.

What to look for when shopping for the best smart luggage brands

First and foremost, smart luggage needs to be high quality and durable, because no tech features will be helpful if your suitcase doesn't last. Additionally, look for features that match your preferences.

✔️ Portable charger: Some smart luggage includes a portable charger while others do not and just have a USB port. If you already have a portable charger you like, you can usually save a few bucks by choosing a style without one included. Our picks with portable chargers feature high-quality chargers that are great to use with the suitcase and without.

✔️ Softside vs. hardside: In GH testing, we have had top performers in both hardside and softside luggage. Based on feedback from testers, it comes down to personal preference. When shopping for hardside luggage, look for durable materials like 100% polycarbonate. Our pros recommend softside luggage made out of nylon or polyester if you want a more affordable option.

✔️ Wheels: For rolling luggage, our testers prefer four 360° wheels for easy maneuverability. Two-wheel luggage only lets you push it forward and back, while four wheels give you the flexibility to push in all directions.

✔️ Handles: When shopping, look at all the handles on the suitcase. Check how easy it is to lift the telescopic handle to different heights. Some styles put padding on the handles, which can make it much more comfortable to use after a long day of traveling. Look for styles with top and side handles to make it easy to put in an overhead bin.

✔️ Weight: Avoid bulky styles and stick with lightweight carry-ons that weigh less than 8 to 10 pounds when empty.

Do airlines allow smart luggage?

Yes, smart luggage is allowed on airplanes, but there are limitations that depend on the airline. Airlines do not want lithium-powered portable chargers in the cargo hold, so they ask that all portable chargers are removed from the suitcase before boarding and carried in hand. Even if you plan on carrying on your bag, you must remove that battery before boarding in case your suitcase gets checked at the gate. Because of this rule, smart luggage with a built-in charger or battery that is not removable may not be allowed on the plane. If you are using your own personal portable charger, check that it meets FAA and TSA regulations . Always check the specific luggage rules and size limitations from the airline before flying to ensure a smooth airport experience.

Best smart luggage in 2024

These are the smartest suitcase for every traveler's budget.

Samsara smart suitcase, one our best smart luggage picks

If you haven't tried any of the best smart luggage yet, then you're seriously missing out. Adding some smarts to your carry-on suitcases offers up the best upgrades since the day someone realized how invaluable 360-degree wheels and telescoping handles could be.

But those have nothing on the neat features you can get right now, including GPS locators, USB charging ports, motorized wheels, and even built-in measuring scales.  Most of them are TSA-approved too, though you will need to remove the batteries if you plan on checking them.

Smart luggage can be an incredibly versatile companion, especially if you regularly traveling by air. But picking up a piece of smart luggage can be a little daunting, and if you need some help we have you covered.

Based on our research, these are the best smart luggage options for every kind of traveller.

Away Travel Bigger Carry-On

1. Away Travel Bigger Carry-On

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Away is the cult favorite when it comes to smart luggage. Its sleek design, multiple size options and practical features made it the first suitcase to successfully break into the influencer market. We happen to thinks it's one of the best suitcases overall — the smart features just make it all that much better.

Founded by former Warby Parker executives, the Away delivers on design while keeping your devices charged for any adventure. The Bigger Carry-On's compression bag gives you maximum packing capacity while still fitting into overhead bins, but the battery pack pops out quickly if you need to check the bag. The exterior is scratch-resistant, but if there's any kind of issue with your Away, you're covered with a lifetime warranty.

Samsara Tag Smart Luggage

2. Samsara Tag Smart Carry On

The Samsara Tag Smart Carry On has a feature that distinguishes it from every other carry-on on this list: an included AirTag. Keeping tabs on your luggage is a major anxiety for many travelers, especially for those who are always on-the-go with multi-stop trips. Since this luggage comes with an AirTag (and a compartment designed to keep it safe) you're able to see when your suitcase is with you, and when it's been left behind.

These features require you to have an iPhone with the Find My app, which excludes Android users. Still, if you do have an iPhone, you'll find it easy to know when your luggage is at all times. And we'll bet it's a lot of luggage, since the Samsara Tag Smart Carry On has a huge capacity. You'll also have several color choices to choose from, including a hot pink limited-edition partnership with T-Mobile branded the Un-Carrier On. This model comes with a battery pack and wireless charging compartment for added smarts.

Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage

3. Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage

If you're looking for a smart suitcase that feels premium all-around, the Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage is among our top picks. It's not the most affordable carry-on bag, but it's packed with convenient features. It sports a secure laptop sleeve in the front, so you can tuck in your computer and any additional items you might need to access quickly. Like some of the other bags on this list, the Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage also offers an optional portable battery pack, complete with a USB-C and USB-A inputs for charging two devices at once.

It helps that the luggage is nice-looking, too. After testing it ourselves, we especially like how the wheels let it sit close to the ground. It's a sleek companion for all kinds of travel — and if you bundle it with check-in luggage, you'll save $50 on the set.

Andiamo Classic

4. The Andiamo Classico

For those who can pull off the retro-trunk aesthetic, the Andiamo Classico suitcase delivers with vibrant, high-gloss finishes and a zipper-less frame. The "royal sapphire" option especially catches our eye.

As for the luggage's smart features, the RFID-blocking technology pocket keeps sensitive materials safe. There's also a single USB port, but you'll need to supply your own removable battery. It's pretty heavy for a carry-on, and it's definitely not the smartest bag out there, but it certainly looks nice and reviewers seem to love it.

What reviewers say:

Forbes : "Now you can sparkle like the fanciest jet setters with the shiniest roller around."

Luggage Spots : "[It’s]  without a doubt one of the best pieces of luggage available on the market in recent years. It is now one of my most frequently used pieces and I love it. With a 100-day trial period, no harm in trying it out first!"

Arlo Skye Polycarbonate Carry-on

5. Arlo Skye The Frame Carry-on

Arlo Skye’s most popular carry-on is so for a reason: It's deceivingly lightweight, comes in five beautiful finishes, and has just enough smart features to make air travel easier.

Two TSA-approved combination locks effectively end the need for luggage zippers. You can charge your device on the go with the USB C and A Ports, and pop out the battery with a simple press when your bag gets gate-checked. Silent Run Lisof wheels make the bag a pleasant companion, while hand-stitched handles add the designer touch you'd expect from Louis Vuitton and Tumi alums. Great customer service is simply an added bonus.

Travel + Leisure: "I’ve never considered this a necessary luggage amenity, as someone who travels with a portable battery pack, but it is easier than unearthing a small battery from your backpack and potentially carries a higher charge capacity."

Forbes: "I tested it on a trip to Mexico and am reasonably confident I have never had such a big crush on a carry-on bag. Built of scratch-resistant aluminum with Florentine leather handles and trim, the 9.5-pound case sports a removable high-speed charger with two USB ports and purrs along on whisper-quiet Japanese quad wheels."

Best smart bags, suitcases, luggage and rucksacks for the future of travel

You'll be on cloud nine with these clever cases

travel smart bag

The best smart suitcases make traveling just a little easier. And, considering that getting on an airplane has never been more accessible yet never more frustrating, we’ll take what we can get to make life a little better.

Outside of traveling first class, you’ll be scrambling for amenities, especially on cheaper airlines so having a suitcase that can help keep your devices charged for when you finally land and need to call an uber is crucial. And, if you’re traveling by train, it’s even more paramount.

Plus, some of these options come with other useful features like hidden compartments and GPS trackers so that you’ll know where your luggage is even when the airline doesn’t. There are even some that can follow you around or double as a motorized scooter. And, you thought the future wasn’t here yet… Even if the more esoteric features aren’t as of interest to you, the best smart suitcases are a benefit for travel from keeping your smartphone charged to ensuring that your laptop along with all your other personal items are safe.

What is smart luggage?

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

So-called smart luggage includes cases and bags designed to keep your gadgets charged while you travel.

At their most basic, they’ll include a rechargeable battery pack that can be used to power your devices on the go, and at their most advanced they may include a GPS luggage tracker, putting your mind at ease as to the location of your baggage as it travels alongside you.

Some brands, such as Horizn Studios even include a personalised travel service, managing bookings and reservations on your behalf.

While not strictly tech-infused, gadget-friendly backpacks and rucksacks can also be a lifesaver when travelling, with secret pockets for valuables and dedicated pouches putting gadgets easily within reach when you’re rushing through security.

Travel restrictions

However, the rise of smart luggage has not been a straightforward one. With airports on high alert due to never ending terrorism threats and passenger safety paramount, some earlier attempts at smart luggage have been banned on flights.

Remember the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle ? Or flaming hoverboards? They’re to blame – with airlines unable to verify the safety of onboard batteries, luggage that contained lithium-ion batteries were banned from the hold – and in the case of some airlines, from being taken onboard as hand luggage too.

Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta and Alaska Airlines have all put restrictions on smart luggage. But all is not lost, provided you know what you’re travelling with.

So what can, and can’t, you take on board? Essentially, if you buy a suitcase that has a removable battery pack onboard, you should be fine – they’re allowed in the cabin and, so long as you eject the battery before check in, they can be stored in the hold, too.

However, some airlines are still a little touchy about cases with battery compartments built in, so just to be on the safe side, eject your battery pack before you go through security even if you’re taking it as carry on luggage.

What you definitely shouldn’t do is buy a case with a battery pack built in that can’t be removed. This is a sure-fire way to get you held up at the gate, where you and your belongings will be stranded unless you purchase a new, dumb case.

The best smart luggage: cases

travel smart bag

If you’re after the best of the best smart luggage, the best we've tried so far would be the cases built by Away . It makes smart cases in a range of sizes, including two different carry-on capacities, and a kid friendly case too.

The Carry-On with Pocket is our pick of the bunch. Capacious with a 38L main compartment, and lightweight at 3.8kg when empty, it comes complete with an ejectable 10,000mAh battery tucked under the slide-out handle with two power-out ports for charging a pair of gadgets at once.

Carry-On with Pocket

<a href="https://www.pntra.com/t/8-11514-101987-155614?sid=hawk-custom-tracking&website=194177&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.awaytravel.com%2Fluggage%2Fcarry-on-pocket" data-link-merchant="awaytravel.com"" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> Carry-On with Pocket - smart case suitable for storage in an aircraft cabin with ejectable 10,000mAh battery: £275 / $275.

Its polycarbonate shell is tough while still having enough give to overstuff the bag in a pinch, and 360-degree Hinomoto wheels let you glide around the airport concourse.

A dedicated pocket at the front also lets you slip a laptop or tablet in and out in seconds to help a speedy sprint through security.

An inner compression system maximises the amount of clothes you can fit inside, while a TSA-approved combination lock keeps your valuables safe while also letting authorities safely open your bag if required without resorting to tearing the the thing apart.

A pink July travel suitcase on a beige background.

Alternatively, if you're looking for a second option, we also like July's Carry On travel luggage. It's a tiny bit more expensive than Away and a smidge heavier, but it comes with a 10,000mAh battery and offers a good number of dividers and pockets.

In a recent trip to New York, July's case felt incredibly light and maneuverable despite being loaded with tech and travel essentials, and the carbon fiber shell did a great job holding strong against bumps and scrapes.

For security features, you've got two separate combination locks that can be set independently from one another and a TSA key so that the security agency can get in and out of the bag without causing a fuss.

The best smart luggage: rucksacks

If you’re after a rucksack we’d suggest trying wares by ModernistLook and Horizn Studios. We've not tried these ourselves, but from our research these look by far the most sensibly-designed, with all the elements we're looking for.

The more tech-savvy of the two is the ModernistLook Smart Pro. Large enough to house a 15-inch laptop, it has an integrated USB port to which you can connect up any portable charging pack on the inside.

Then, it’s just a matter of plugging your depleted device into the port on the outside of your device to charge while on the go. With a hidden rear pocket for valuables against your back and a luggage strap for hooking your bag onto your suitcase, it’s feature rich.

ModernistLook Smart Pro

The Smart Pro isn’t the best looking bag we’ve seen. If you’re feeling fashion conscious, and don’t mind losing out on the USB port, check out the Horizn Studios Gion, which has a classier pod-like look, ample easy-access storage space and water resistance.

Horizn Studios Gion

Lightspeed luggage – the cases of the future

The future of luggage? It's looking like it'll be hands-off, and ride-on. With GPS trackers mastered and onboard charging as standard, the future suitcase will look to do the really hard work for us – wandering aimlessly through cookie-cutter departure gates while dragging our stuff behind us.

Take for instance the forward-thinking Modobag , as seen in the video above. Not only is it a vessel for your vestments, it also doubles up as a 6mph motorised scooter, turning a trip to the airport lounge into a makeshift Mario Kart track. Though released in 2016, there's still little out there yet to match it.

Or how about Xiaomi's Puppy 1 Smart Suitcase? Remote control powered with a secure finger print lock, it'll follow its owner around, complete with a parking brake and bi-directional steering, with sensors allowing it to adjust to different inclines and adapt its center of gravity accordingly to avoid tipping over.

And what about if you want to be buddies with your luggage? The Panasonic Personal Porter Robot concept was shown off in late 2018, and features facial recognition tech which lets it lock its contents off to anyone but its owner, whom it'll follow around like a faithful dog. While it's intended more for a trip to the shops than an overseas jaunt, its mere existence makes it easier to imagine a future where we've all got our own personal luggage-bot to carry our belongings around for us. Let the AI worry about your passport and dirty laundry while you hope off the plane and find the nearest beach.

What to Know

  • Smart luggage contains a battery and circuit board to power a variety of high-tech features, which vary from bag to bag.
  • Most smart bags are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which must be removable if plan to travel by air.

This article explain what smart bags are, limitations involved, and tips for traveling with one.

What Is a Smart Bag aka Smart Luggage?

In its simplest form, smart bags are any luggage with high-tech capabilities. Usually, smart luggage is hard-shelled and can contain any combination of features which can include:

  • Device charging
  • GPS tracking
  • Electronic Locks
  • Remote, app-enabled controls
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Electronic scales

These features make travel easier by allowing you to charge mobile devices, control TSA-approved locks from a smartphone, weigh the bag, and track it by proximity and GPS location.

Some smart bags even feature solar recharging capabilities, RFID-blocking liners to prevent identity theft and portable Wi-Fi hotspots in case you're in an area where you can't connect.

The Challenges of High-Tech Luggage

While it's comforting knowing that you can travel across the country or around the world with the assurance that you can find and protect your belongings, there is one problem: Airlines aren't as excited about your new smart suitcase as you are.

Airlines take issue with the lithium-ion batteries that power these smart bags. These kinds of batteries are known to be fire hazards, especially on airplanes. As a result, aviation governing bodies such as the International Air Transportation Association ( IATA ) and the U.N. International Civil Aeronautics Organization ( ICAO ) recommend that lithium-ion batteries not be stored in the cargo hold of an airplane. If a fire breaks out in the cargo hold, it's much harder to contain it.

To reduce risks, the IATA recommended in 2018 that airlines stop allowing the use of smart luggage with non-removable lithium-ion batteries. The ICAO followed suit in 2019. Many airlines, including American Airlines, American Eagle, Alaska Airlines, and Delta Airlines, have moved on their own to ban these smart bags.

What to Know About Smart Bag Batteries

While stricter regulations against smart luggage have been implemented, they mainly target smart bags with lithium-ion batteries that cannot be removed. That still leaves options for some of the coolest luggage that lets you track, charge, and manage your belongings. The new requirements mean lithium-ion batteries must be removable, even from carry-on luggage.

Smart luggage with removable lithium-ion batteries is still okay for travel so long as the battery can be quickly and easily removed. When checking the bag, you'll be required to remove the battery. If you choose to carry on your luggage, the battery can remain in place as long as the suitcase is stored in an overhead bin. If the luggage needs to go into the cargo hold for any reason, you'll have to remove the battery and keep it in the cabin.

Some manufacturers, such as Heys , have begun creating smart luggage that uses triple-A batteries that are safe to check. These suitcases don't have auxiliary charging for your other smart devices, but they do allow you to track your baggage, control locks remotely, and set proximity alarms. So, if you get too far away from the bag you'll receive a notification on your phone.

When in doubt, check the websites for the airlines you're using. Each airline lists requirements for both checked and carry-on luggage, usually on a page that has specific baggage information.

GPS Luggage Tags Are a Great Option

Travelers also have the option to forgo smart luggage entirely by using smart luggage tags. These luggage tags allow you to track your baggage using safe, battery-powered sensors that can be monitored via a smartphone app.

AirTags have become a very popular way to keep an eye on your luggage. AirTags use a very common battery type, so it's easy to replace when it gets low. Tile Pro is also a great alternative to Apple's AirTags. They work the same way, and most Tile Pro models come with replaceable batteries.

Traveling With the Coolest High-Tech Luggage

Smart luggage is an improvement in travel technology. When looking for the right smart bag, choose one with an easily removable battery. That means no tools are required.

If you have questions about whether an airline allows smart luggage onto their planes and the restrictions, check out the airline's baggage policies on its website.

The latest luggage options offer smart capabilities, including the ability to track your bags

travel smart bag

Few luggage trends rival the increasing availability of smart bags, suitcases that allow you to charge your phone and other devices while traveling. Yet even as many brands have leaped into the category, consumers still have questions. Is a smart bag’s battery safe, and what do I need to do to ensure an airline accepts my bag without any problems? The latter is a valid concern in view of a recent viral story, when journalist Pandora Sykes was booted off an EasyJet flight because her checked baggage included a lithium-ion battery that reportedly had not been disconnected prior to check-in. The British-based airline’s rules state that smart bags can be checked, but their batteries must be disconnected.

While several of the latest checked sizes offer smart capabilities, including the ability to track your luggage as it moves through the baggage system, the battery feature seems best employed in carry-on pieces. That only makes sense to anyone who has ever sought to charge a dying phone while waiting at an airport gate, only to find electrical outlets taken by other passengers and seat-adjacent chargers not working (a recent experience at JFK’s Terminal 4 springs to mind). Ultimately the simple rule of thumb is that it’s best to unplug any power bank prior to boarding to avoid accidental overheating, which also could occur if a lithium battery is broken, hence the concern about batteries in checked bags.

With that in mind, we rounded up a selection of the latest carry-on pieces that offer a variety of styles and charging options. Fold in a little knowledge about safety and you’ll be a smart traveler in no time.

"Smart" luggage has the ability to make your life a lot easier, what with built-in USB charging ports, Bluetooth-enabled tracking devices, and even handles that double as scales. But before you purchase one, you should make sure your bag isn't in violation of any airline or TSA policies. (

On other airlines, however, customers can still store a carry-on suitcase with removable batteries in the overhead bin of the cabin. The bottom line? If your bag has batteries that aren't removable, don't bother bringing it. (One smart luggage brand to avoid? Bluesmart, which makes bags with batteries that are permanently built-in.) American, Alaska, Hawaiian, Delta, United, and Southwest are all enforcing the policy, according to The Washington Post .

If you're thinking about purchasing a smart bag and want to avoid any unnecessary airport mishaps, here's a guide to some luggage brands that make suitcases with easily removable batteries.

What Is A Smart Bag? Everything You Need To Know

Are you a tech-savvy frequent traveler asking yourself, “What is a Smart Bag?”

Look no further; in this article, we define the Smart Bag for you. We also share some history of early smart luggage bans and explain policies around them. Read on so you can decide if a piece of smart luggage is right for you.

What is a Smart Bag (aka Smart Luggage)

The airline industry considers smart luggage to be any suitcase or bag containing a battery pack that offers high-tech abilities.

What Are the Tech Features of a Smart Bag?

  • Built-in battery or power bank
  • GPS tracking
  • Built-in scale
  • Electronic locks controlled from your smartphone
  • External USB port or USB-c port for charging
  • Portable Wi-Fi hotspots
  • RFID blocking liners for security
  • Solar panel for charging

The Issue with Smart Luggage Batteries

In short, lithium-ion batteries are considered a fire hazard. So in 2018, the U.N. International Civil Aeronautics Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recommended airlines not to permit lithium-ion batteries in checked bags that go in the cargo hold because of the fire risk. The TSA banned bags containing non-removable lithium batteries by the end of 2018.

Some of the newer smart bags use AA batteries and are safe to check. You cannot charge devices with them, but you can control locks remotely, track luggage, and enable proximity alarms sent to your phone.

So Can I Travel With a Smart Bag in 2022?

You can travel with a Smart Bag with a lithium-ion battery, but remember that non-removable batteries are banned. So, as long as it is removable, it’s ok to use as a carry-on bag. If you check your bag, you will need to remove the battery and carry it in the cabin. But, the airline employees may ask you to remove the battery and store your bag in the overhead bin.

PRO TIP: If you plan to carry on your bag, but the overhead bins are full, you will face a challenge. If the airline employees tell you that you need to gate check your bag and the battery is not removable, your bag may not be allowed on the plane. The stricter regulations solely apply to luggage with lithium-ion power banks. Bottom line, if your piece of luggage includes lithium battery power banks of any kind, make sure it is removable.

What about GPS Luggage Tags & Trackers

When it comes to tracking your baggage and securing it against identity theft, newly introduced smart bag tags on the market are the best option. With a safe sensor, you monitor your bag through mobile apps on your smartphone.

Another good alternative is trackers you keep in your luggage. These devices can locate your bag anywhere using a GSM signal. They are approved, provided it automatically turns off whenever out of range, which makes it follow flight regulations. In general, trackers provide the smart bag’s general location, and the smartphone app shows you where on that carousel your bag is sitting.

With travel being so chaotic lately, I know many travellers who are using an Apple AirTag in their luggage. Some have even needed to use it to locate lost bags!

What are the Major Airlines policies?

Before you travel with your new Smart Suitcase, you should always check the airlines you plan to fly for your trip, including codeshare airlines and any transfers you may have. Some US airlines, such as American Airlines , Alaska Airlines , and Delta Airlines, set new policies regarding Smart Bags.

PRO TIP:  You should always check the policy of every airline you plan to fly on so that you know if there are any new rules.

In short, owning a smart bag is an excellent option, provided it adheres to the TSA’s removable battery regulation and complies with your airline baggage policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a smart bag for travel.

Apart from wondering what a smart suitcase does, you probably want to know the ideal smart bag for travel. Since nowadays we heavily depend on technology, one of the most common features of a smart bag is that they all contain USB ports for charging your mobile devices. Most importantly, you need to understand that they all comprise a removable battery that wouldn’t cause any problems when traveling by plane. Besides this, GPS locators can track your bag. Some even can follow you around or include electronic scales to measure the luggage’s weight.

Are Smart Bags Allowed on Planes?

Primarily, the new policy focuses on lithium batteries that power many standard smart bags. It focuses on many fires and explosions that have occurred involving different lithium battery-powered devices.

However, the policy allows smart carry-on bags on flights. But, it specifies that the lithium battery is removable in case of a gate-check scenario.

In case your smart bag doesn’t contain a removable battery, and you encounter a gate-check scenario, you’re simply out of luck! In other words, that means that you will need to buy a brand new suitcase, transfer all your belongings into it, and leave it behind. And, of course, you will have missed your flight.

Is Smart Luggage Banned?

Smart bags with non-removable lithium batteries are banned. Smart luggage with removable batteries is permitted, but the removable battery must be taken out and carried in the cabin for checked bags. Furthermore, you are restricted to 100 Watt-hours when it comes to lithium-ion batteries. The same rule applies to lithium-metal and lithium-ion batteries but does not apply to AA batteries.

What Is a Smart Bag on Delta?

As of 2018, Delta and Delta Connection banned all checked or carry-on luggage/ smart luggage/ smart bags with non-removable lithium-ion batteries. Primarily, this is because powerful batteries can overheat and even pose a fire risk during flight.

So, customers checking smart luggage containing a removable lithium-ion battery should remove it and carry it with them into the cabin. On the other hand, customers carrying on smart luggage containing a removable battery should remove it from its specific enclosure before boarding the aircraft. It is consistent with Delta’s policy demanding customers to keep spare lithium-ion batteries in their carry-on luggage.

What Are Smart Bags, And Are They Worth It?

traveler with passport and phone

From smart TVs to smartwatches, we're living in a world of smart everything. For frequent travelers, digital nomads, or those who simply want an easier way to travel, smart technology extends to the very bags we take with us on those trips abroad or across the country. That is, if you're willing to spend the money. These bags feature things like GPS tracking, Bluetooth connectivity, electronic locks, and built-in scales and charging banks — all designed to make traveling less stressful and more convenient.

If you're on a flight without charging ports and your carry-on is a smart bag, no problem; you can plug your phone into your bag. Smart bags with built-in scales can prevent last-minute surprises at the airport by letting you know how much your bag weighs before you leave home. That's a big difference from the average suitcase, where you're lucky if it even comes with a lock. Still, a big question for many is whether all of the bells and whistles smart bags offer are even worth it.

What makes a bag smart?

Before the age of smart devices, if a bag was durable and had enough room for clothes and toiletries, it was considered more than enough for most travelers. Technology has changed everything, and the travel industry hasn't been left untouched, with smart bags being sold as a must-have for the modern traveler. However, the question remains: What exactly makes a bag smart?

A smart bag is a backpack, carry-on bag, or suitcase equipped with high-tech features. It uses a battery and circuit board to power and manage all its functions. In addition to GPS tracking, charging ports, and remote locks, some smart bags come with portable Wi-Fi hotspots, solar charging, and RFID-blocking liners for added security. While you can buy things like Apple AirTags or an RFID-blocking wallet to use while traveling instead of a smart bag, some people might prefer having everything in one place for convenience and to simplify travel logistics.

Why smart bags can be a problem

If you're a tech-savvy traveler, taking a smart bag on your next trip may sound like a dream. While there's a lot to like about these high-tech bags, they also have several potential drawbacks — one of the biggest being the safety concerns associated with the lithium-ion batteries that power them. As a result, many airlines have placed restrictions on the use of smart bags, with most requiring flyers to remove lithium-ion batteries in checked luggage.

The reasoning behind the removable battery requirement is that lithium-ion batteries are considered dangerous goods because they can overheat or short-circuit, especially when damaged, making them a fire hazard when stored in the cargo hold. If you're using your smart bag as your carry-on, many airlines will allow you to keep the battery plugged in during the flight. Since so much of what a smart bag can do depends on lithium-ion battery power, if you check your bag, you'll lose access to many of these features, including the ability to use GPS to keep tabs on your bag's whereabouts while it's away from you.

Is a smart bag worth it?

Most travelers probably don't need a smart bag and would be better off spending their money on other gadgets to improve their traveling experience. When traveling, you most likely keep all of your valuables on your person or in your carry-on bag, making things like remote locks and GPS unnecessary.

You may be thinking, what if I need to check my bag? If you check your bag, your smart luggage could bring you peace of mind. Most of these bags have electronic, tamper-proof locks that the average criminal will find hard to crack. However, once you remove the lithium-ion battery to check your bag, it'll lose most of its smart capabilities and revert to being just like any other suitcase.

Smart bags are also costlier than regular luggage. Plus, you can buy other gadgets, like a power bank, to charge your devices while at the airport or on a flight. If tracking your luggage is important, you can use a Samsung SmartTag2 or Apple AirTag to track your checked bags while you travel. With these gadgets, you can come close to making your own DIY smart bag.

TripSavvy / Tamara Staples

These days, with more and more airlines charging fees for checked bags, many travelers are choosing to limit themselves to a carry-on whenever they can. This means it’s more important than ever to purchase a bag tough enough to withstand being hauled in and out of overhead compartments—yet light and spacious enough to give you the greatest amount of packing space possible. Handy extras range from TSA-approved locks and integrated luggage scales to USB ports for keeping your devices charged in transit.

With so many brands and styles out there, choosing the right suitcase can seem overwhelming. To make it a little easier, we tested 41 of the most popular options in our testing lab. We put them through their paces and scored them for attributes, including capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and value.

Final Verdict

Best overall, samsonite freeform carry-on spinner.

Not enough zippered pockets

An instant favorite with our testing team, the Samsonite Freeform Carry-On is made of injection-molded polypropylene for a hardside case that’s exceptionally lightweight, durable, and impact-resistant. It stood up well to our baseball bat test with barely any scuffs—so much so that we’d feel confident if we had to check it. We loved its minimal, ultra-modern aesthetic and found that it had sufficient space for everything on our packing list, even without employing the expansion feature.

Potential purchasers should be aware that although the expansion feature is a definite bonus, overstuffing the suitcase could make it exceed some airline carry-on restrictions. We felt the interior organization options were good, with a cross ribbon, divider, and several pockets. The only downside was that there was only one zippered pocket, meaning you’d have to choose whether to separate shoes or dirty laundry.

The suitcase has four 360-degree double spinner wheels for flawless maneuverability, and we found that it had the best glide of any bag we tested. It was easier to operate on two wheels over bumps, but transitioning between two- and four-wheeled use was a breeze. The suitcase also features a multi-stage handle with a wider grip for added comfort; a recessed, TSA-approved combination lock; and a built-in ID tag. Colors range from classic black to silver or sky blue. Finally, your purchase includes a limited 10-year global warranty.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Travelpro platinum elite carry-on spinner.

  • Capacity 4.7 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

Easy to maneuver

Solid, adjustable handle

Excellent impact and scratch resistance

Capacity could be more generous

Power bank sold separately

The Travelpro Platinum Elite Hardside Carry-On is a relatively expensive option; however, a 100 percent polycarbonate shell with reinforced aluminum corner guards makes it impressively durable and, therefore, worth the investment. Even after multiple drop tests and bat beatings, we could see no visible signs of damage. The textured finish should help reduce the visibility of scuffs or scratches, keeping your luggage looking brand new for longer. Exterior highlights include an integrated TSA lock and USB-A and USB-C charge ports.

This suitcase benefits from Travelpro’s famous PrecisionGlide System, with eight self-aligning spinner wheels and a PowerScope Lite handle with four height settings. We found it incredibly smooth and easy to navigate and particularly liked the handle’s sturdy feel and textured grip. When it came to packing, we had to use the expansion feature to fit everything in, which made it a tight squeeze getting the bag into an overhead compartment. However, we liked the zippered divider panel and water-resistant toiletries section.

Best Budget

Amazon basics hardside spinner.

Minimalist, sleek aesthetic

Functional internal division

Easily handles any terrain out there

No TSA-approved lock

The AmazonBasics 21-inch spinner retails for well under $100, making it the most affordable option on this list. Despite its modest price tag, it surpassed our expectations on every test, making it an exceptional value for the money. It features a thick ABS plastic shell with a scratch-resistant, textured finish. We loved the simple sleekness of its design and the four bold colors to choose from, including black, navy blue, light blue, and orange.

Four double-spinner wheels provide smooth maneuverability in any direction, with the suitcase performing admirably over bumps, obstacle courses, and smooth and carpeted surfaces during our testing process. The fully lined interior is expandable by up to 15 percent, although we didn’t have to use this feature to fit everything in. We particularly liked the built-in organizer with its three separate zippered pockets and the compression straps that kept all our belongings in place. The durable zippers and a sturdy handle complete the bag’s list of attributes.

Samsonite Omni PC Carry-on

  • Capacity 4.5 /5
  • Maneuverability 3.8 /5

Great resilience to cosmetic damage

Ample packing space from the outset

Simple yet effective internal layout

Wheels are too small

The Samsonite Omni PC Carry-On may retail for roughly double the price of our budget pick, but it's still considerably cheaper than many of the suitcases on this list and combines durability, capacity, and lightness to provide impressive value for the money. It features a 100 percent polycarbonate shell with micro-diamond texturing for extreme scratch resistance (even after our rigorous testing, it showed no visible scratches). And it's protected by Samsonite's generous 10-year global warranty—just one of many things we love about Samsonite luggage .

We found we could fit everything in without using the suitcase's expansion feature. However, it was still a tight fit in the overhead compartment, so it's a good idea to check the exact requirements of your favorite airline before purchasing. We liked the organizational features—namely, a zippered divider and compression straps. The only drawback was the undersized spinner wheels, which caught easily on ruts (but performed well on carpet and sharp turns). The handle has two height settings, and the integrated lock is TSA-compliant.

Dimensions: 22 x 15 x 9.75 inches | Weight: 7.05 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Yes

Best Softside

Travelpro platinum elite 21-inch expandable carry-on.

  • Organization 5 /5
  • Maneuverability 4.9 /5

Made to last from premium fabrics

Plenty of storage solutions

Smart capabilities

Relatively expensive

If you’re looking for a softside carry-on, the Travelpro Platinum Elite is an excellent pick, featuring high-density nylon with a DuraGuard coating that resists stains and abrasions. This showed up during our durability tests, and the suitcase survived completely unscathed. With its genuine leather accents and chrome zippers, we feel this is a quality investment likely to endure long enough to justify its high price tag. As a bonus, it includes a built-in USB charge port with an external power bank pocket that adheres to FAA regulations.

We did have to use the tip-resistant expansion feature to make space for everything on our packing list, which made the bag significantly larger. However, we really appreciated the thoughtful interior organization features, including two separate compartments, a deluxe tie-down system, and integrated accessory pockets. There’s even a removable, quart-sized wet bag for your toiletries and a fold-out suiter. Other highlights include Travelpro’s renowned PrecisionGlide System and a choice of elegant colors such as Bordeaux and Rich Espresso.

Best Hardside

Samsonite outline pro carry-on spinner.

Samsonite

  • Maneuverability 3.5 /5

Chic and streamlined

Great choice of storage compartments

Several nice-to-have features

Rolled less smoothly than others

We loved the ultra-modern, contoured design of the Samsonite Outline Pro’s polypropylene shell, which not only looked excellent but also protected it entirely from scratches and dents during our testing process. The case also stands out for its integrated extras, including a USB charge port and a TSA-approved lock, while an interior lined with fabric made from recycled plastic bottles wins points for sustainability and a 10-year limited global warranty affords peace of mind.

We were able to pack everything without using the expansion feature and loved this suitcase’s intuitive organization options. These include a KompressPak panel to keep your belongings in place and two integrated, zippered pockets (one of which is waterproof for any damp items). The bag was slightly let down by its movement, which was clunkier than expected on all four wheels. However, the molded trolley handle is height-adjustable and infused with an additive to help reduce germs.

Dimensions: 23 x 15 x 10 inches | Weight: 6.39 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Yes

Best for Business Travel

Béis the carry-on roller.

  • Durability 2.5 /5

Outstanding organization

Simple to move

Resilient, attractive exterior

Somewhat unwieldy on four wheels

The Béis Carry-On Roller is an excellent fit for frequent business travelers, with an ultra-lightweight and durable virgin polycarbonate shell that’s easy to roll, drag, and lift while also withstanding extensive rough handling. The appealing 3D stripe design and range of sophisticated colors (from beige to dusky pink) ensure you’ll also earn style points with your colleagues. We found the Hinomoto 360-degree spinner wheels turned tightly and rolled smoothly over bumps, while the handle’s cushioned silicone grip was infinitely comfortable.

Perhaps best of all is this suitcase’s thoughtfully designed interior, which features multiple zippered flaps, pockets, and pouches for everything from small essentials to shoes and laundry. In fact, the storage options were so comprehensive our tester wished they could exceed our maximum points score on this front. Other highlights include a 2-inch expansion feature, a retractable strap for attaching your purse, a weight limit indicator, and a TSA lock. Lastly, the suitcase comes with the brand’s limited lifetime warranty.

Dimensions: 22 x 14 x 9 inches | Weight: 8.36 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Yes

Best Organization

Away the bigger carry-on flex.

  • Durability 4 /5

All around fluid movement

Great choice for overpackers

Comes with sponge for removing scratches

Not a budget pick

If you’re the traveler who always needs more packing space—for last-minute items from home or souvenirs bought on your trip—you’ll love The Bigger Carry-On Flex from Away. Built using durable polycarbonate with stylish leather details, it fits 20 percent more than the brand’s standard carry-on and expands to reveal an additional 2.25 inches of space (although utilizing it may mean you have to check the bag on some airlines). An interior compression system helps you to fit even more.

On the inside, the lining is removable—handy for washing out any accidental spills. We enjoyed the multiple organization compartments, including a hidden laundry bag designed to keep dirty clothes separate. The suitcase survived our durability tests intact and also aced our maneuverability trials. We found that the 360-degree spinner wheels glided smoothly, turned easily, and functioned just as well whether we were using two or four of them. Choose from a range of eye-catching colors and enjoy a 100-day trial and free shipping.

Best Sustainable

Paravel aviator carry-on plus.

  • Durability 4.5 /5

Entirely carbon neutral

Frictionless wheels for a super smooth ride

Great capacity and interior layout

No expansion feature

Paravel is a brand with sustainability at its core, and the Aviator Carry-On Plus is no exception. The carbon emissions involved in sourcing, producing, and shipping the bag are all offset—as is its first trip with you. Materials are all sustainable, from the recycled polycarbonate shell with its recycled vegan leather trim to the lining made from 15 recycled plastic bottles. And you won’t be sacrificing anything in terms of style, thanks to the chic two-tone color scheme and the test-proven scuff-hiding finish.

Although this carry-on doesn’t expand, we were able to fit everything on our packing list with room to spare. We loved the luxurious, impeccably organized interior, which boasts a compression board, pockets, and a removable laundry bag. The suitcase was also incredibly easy to maneuver, thanks to 360-degree wheels with carbon steel bearings that rolled like a dream. Other pros include a TSA lock and Paravel’s five-year warranty, making this purchase well worth it for those with the cash to spare.

Dimensions: 22.7 x 14.7 x 9.6 inches | Weight: 8.5 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: No

Best Design

July carry on pro snapsleeve.

  • Value 4.5 /5

External laptop sleeve

Smart features

Sturdy, quiet wheels for a smooth glide

The compression system could be more effective

Made from crush-proof polycarbonate that stood up well to our durability tests, the July Carry-On Pro represents the next generation of carry-on suitcases. Its most exciting feature is the detachable SnapSleeve, a padded 16-inch laptop compartment with space for documents and an extra zippered pocket that uses magnets to click into place on the outside of the suitcase. Want to store your bag overhead but keep your laptop with you? No more rummaging around in the aisle.

You can also charge your laptop and phone using the ejectable battery with its USB and FastCharge USB-C ports. The bag fits everything on our packing list, with a Twin-Strap compression system and hidden laundry bag. We especially loved how well the suitcase rolled on cement and rough surfaces, with four SilentMove wheels that never caught or got stuck. Other highlights include a 20-height telescopic handle, a TSA lock, and the ability to personalize—either with text or an illustration of your pet.

Dimensions: 21.5 x 15 x 8.5 inches | Weight: 7.9 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: No

Best Durability

Monos carry on plus spinner.

  • Design 4 /5
  • Maneuverability 4 /5

Durable exterior

Excellent capacity and organization

Gorgeous colors

Movement could be improved

The Monos Carry-On Plus is a looker with its premium materials, vegan leather details, and beautiful color choices like Desert Taupe and Rose Quartz. Not just a pretty face, though, it’s also incredibly tough, with an aerospace-grade polycarbonate shell that withstood multiple drop tests and bat beatings without sustaining anything more than easily removable scuff marks. Its longevity is proven by the fact it comes with a lifetime warranty. All details, from the YKK zippers to the sturdy telescopic handle, are top quality.

We loved the suitcase’s interior too. We felt it was beautifully made and were impressed with how much we were able to fit. The clamshell design features a zippered panel on one side for keeping shoes or dirty laundry separate, while the other uses a compression pad and ballistic nylon straps to keep your belongings firmly in place. The only downside was the case’s maneuverability. We felt it was relatively hard to turn, and it worked better on two wheels than four.

Dimensions: 23 x 15 x 9.5 inches | Weight: 7.38 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: No

Best Splurge

Tumi continental dual access carry-on.

Spacious interior with superb layout

Seamlessly glides over any terrain

Comes with Tumi Tracer

Exorbitant price tag

Retailing at more than $1,000, the Tumi Continental Dual Access 4-Wheeled Carry-On is undoubtedly a splurge (and one our tester found difficult to justify despite its excellent performance). However, if you’re looking for a suitcase that’s as much a status symbol as a luggage item, this is it. It features Tumi’s proprietary FXT ballistic nylon with a unique weave and special, extra-durable coating. The benefit was clear after our durability tests, of which the bag showed no evidence of damage.

It opens two ways: clamshell style and via a front lid, both with quality security zippers. With three exterior pockets, multiple interior pockets, and dividers (including a removable garment sleeve), it’s the organized packer’s dream. We loved that we could fit everything without using the expansion feature and that it slid easily into the overhead compartment. Four dual spinner wheels and a premium telescoping handle guarantee a smooth roll over all surfaces, while extras range from a USB port to optional monogramming.

Dimensions: 22.0 x 16.0 x 9.0 inches | Weight: 11.7 pounds | Wheels: 4 | Expandable: Yes

The Samsonite Freeform Spinner earns first place among our testers thanks to its exceptional maneuverability, chic aesthetics, and long-lasting build. A close second, the Travelpro Platinum Elite Spinner is easy to control and includes functional extras.

All carry-on luggage was tested in our purpose-built laboratory. First, bags were packed with a prescribed list of items to reflect what one might take on a four-day sightseeing trip in the fall . During the packing process, organization features and component quality were evaluated. Once full, we tested how well the suitcase rolled over a variety of terrains (smooth concrete, carpet, and gravel) before using an obstacle course designed to simulate a busy airport terminal to test maneuverability.

Next, we lifted the luggage into a simulated overhead compartment to check fit and how easy it was to pick it up and set it down again. Finally, we subjected the suitcase to stringent durability tests, including pushing it off the top of a shelving unit and beating it with a baseball bat. Both tests were repeated to check all areas of the bag for weaknesses. Based on these tests, we gave each product a score from 1 to 5 for capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and value. These scores determined our category winners.

In all, we tested 41 pieces of carry-on luggage. The top performers are those included above. Here are some other pieces we deemed as honorable mentions:

Arlo Skye The Zipper Carry-On Max with Front Pocket : This suitcase performed quite well in our tests, particularly in terms of durability, capacity, and maneuverability, but the internal organization could be better and the price tag was a bit high.

Bric's Bellagio V2.0 21" Carry-On Spinner Trunk : Stylish, tough as nails, and stellar organization capacity are a few things we loved about the Bellagio. Our tester subtracted some points because the toiletry bag didn't fit and the price tag leaned toward the higher end.

Briggs & Riley Sympatico Domestic Carry-On Expandable Spinner 22" : For frequent travelers who can invest a bit more upfront for an extremely durable suitcase, this is a no-brainer. The interior featured a less-than-intuitive expansion feature and our tester struggled with the zippers.

COOLIFE Carry On with Pocket : We couldn't fault the long-lasting build or the value of this pick. Though generally a solid option, we noticed the maneuverability was lacking (performing some tasks better on two wheels and some on four), and the internal compartment made packing bulky items a bit more complicated.f

What to Look For in Carry-On Luggage

Although weight restrictions for carry-on bags vary depending on the airline you’re flying with, the aircraft size, and your travel class, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) states that limits can be as strict as just 11 pounds. Therefore, the weight of your empty carry-on affects how much you’ll be able to pack within it and is an essential factor to consider. Different materials and designs affect luggage weight; generally, polypropylene is the lightest choice for hardside cases, while nylon and polyester are favorite lightweight picks for softside cases.

Maneuverability

Imagine you’re late for your plane and need to run through a crowded airport terminal , dodging fellow passengers as you go. You need a carry-on that rolls effortlessly, whether pushing it in front of you or pulling it behind you and one that can turn instantly in any direction. For the best maneuverability, always choose a suitcase with four wheels instead of two, and make sure they’re the spinning kind that offers seamless, 360-degree movement. Good quality wheels and a sturdy telescoping handle will give you the same maneuverability on various terrains.

Organization

Even the most basic carry-ons will typically have at least one interior pouch or pocket, usually for separating dirty laundry or shoes or for stashing smaller items so they’re easy to find. More sophisticated options include multiple pockets of varying sizes and materials (perhaps a waterproof one for damp items), zippered dividers that split your packing space in two, and fold-out suiters or removable garment bags. Exterior pockets are typically reserved for softsided bags and can help stash passports and other documents you need to keep handy.

Hard vs. Soft Luggage

Hardside and softside cases have pros and cons, and which is better is primarily a matter of personal preference.

Hardside cases generally offer a trendier and more modern aesthetic, provide better weather resistance, are easier to clean, and protect delicate items with their rigid frame. However, they tend to show more wear and tear on their sleek exteriors than softside bags, so if you're choosing purely based on looks, keep that in mind. Also, hardside bags tend to have fewer pockets and organizational features.

Softside cases are more able to withstand rough handling since they won’t dent or crack and are often lighter and more flexible. The latter means that you have more wiggle room if you tend to overstuff your bag or need to pack odd-shaped items. However, if you're packing fragile items in a softside bag, you need to do so with extra caution as the soft exterior won't provide much protection from drops or hard landings. For breakables, we recommend packing in a hardside bag that can better protect items inside.

Dimensions vary from airline to airline (and sometimes from plane to plane), but the IATA gives the general rule that dimensions should not exceed 22 inches in length, 18 inches in width, and 10 inches in depth. These dimensions include any exterior pockets, wheels, and handles, albeit with the telescoping handle retracted.

A smart bag is any bag with integrated tech capabilities. Most often for carry-on bags, this means a built-in battery pack that powers a USB charge port so you can keep your electronics going throughout your journey. Be aware that the battery should be removable in case you have to check your bag since lithium-ion batteries cannot be put in the hold.

Before cleaning your bag, you should check the manufacturer’s guidelines since the process will differ depending on the materials. However, you can generally use a soft-bristled brush (softside luggage) or a damp cloth (soft and hardside luggage) to spot-clean any dirt or stains. Dry your bag entirely before storing it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

5. Samsara Next Gen Suitcase with Hotspot

The Samsara Next Gen Suitcase is the ultimate combination of convenience and connectivity. With an upgraded design and enhanced tech features, you have exactly what you need for an effortless traveling experience and the ability to tackle the most unimaginable traveling challenges.

Although this is not a carry-on suitcase, I thought of including it since it is one of the best hard-shelled luggage you can own. I had personally tested this product during last year’s CES and the build quality is really good.

travel smart bag

You don’t have to worry about your valuables getting lost since Samsara equipped this smart suitcase with a GPS navigation system as well as Bluetooth (5.1) so that you can track and find your luggage with ease. It does not end at tracking – this smart luggage also has the ability to send notifications to your smartphone if someone opens your suitcase while you’re away.

travel smart bag

Technology seems to be the center of this suitcase’s design since it also comes with an optional Wi-Fi hotspot feature and industry-leading wireless charging to ensure that you remain connected throughout your trip. You can charge your smartphone using the wireless dock, but how about your laptop? Well, Samsara thought about that and included a powerful USB-C connector for your laptop and other devices that you carry with you.

travel smart bag

The smart unit that comes with this high tech suitcase is easily removable, which means that the suitcase complies with airline regulations as well as aviation guidelines, guaranteeing you a hassle-free check-in. Since the smart luggage is made out of polycarbonate, you can be sure that it is strong enough to keep your items safe, in addition to having an extended lifespan. Depending on what you would like to carry with you for your trip or flight, you have quite a lot of space to play around with, since the suitcase has a roomy capacity of 44 liters.

  • Durable polycarbonate shell
  • Removable smart unit with wireless charging dock
  • Optional Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Capacious 44-liter interior

A smart carry on luggage has its own pros and cons. They let you charge your phone and laptop while you are on the move, they look aesthetic and they are good enough to carry lots of clothes. While most smart bags are allowed on an airplane, there will be a thin chance of rejection when the TSA officials are not familiar with the tech. Auto following luggage like Cowarobot may not be allowed in every airplane. So, before you take it to the airport, make sure it complies. But other smart suitcases on this list are perfectly fine for air travel.

If I were to choose one for myself, I would go with Kabuto carry-on luggage or Samsara aluminium suitcase . Both of these have amazing tech in them and look aesthetic. If I am not particularly looking for carry-on luggage, I would choose Samsara’s next-gen hotspot suitcase . I had seen it during last year’s CES and its build quality is top-notch and offers some smart features too.

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback on the products mentioned. That would help our audience.

17 Best Travel Gadgets for Long Flights

There's a lot pack in order to travel sanely, but we'd be lost without a battery pack and noise-canceling headphones

Packing the right travel gadgets for a long flight can make all the difference between misery and comfort. Tablets and e-readers provide hours of entertainment while noise-canceling headphones can help block out the world, and a smart bag or portable power bank will keep everything topped up even if you find yourself stuck on an extended layover.

Before you head off on your next long flight, check out all these great gadgets that can keep you entertained, help with productivity, and improve your overall travel experience.

Use a Smart Bag As Your Carry-On

What we like.

Charge your devices without bringing a separate power bank.

Useful features like electronic locks and built-in tracking.

Designed with travel gadgets and other tech in mind.

What We Don't Like

More expensive than a regular carry-on.

Airlines limit how much battery capacity you can bring on a plane.

Smart bags include features that can come in handy on a long plane journey, including built-in device charging, GPS tracking, app-operated electronic locks, and wireless connectivity. You’ll typically replace your standard carry-on with a smart bag, so select one that conforms to the relevant size limitations.

Since smart bags typically include built-in device charging, you may not need to pack a separate power bank. If you pack a power bank anyway, keep in mind that airlines limit how much battery capacity you can bring in a carry-on, so don’t go over that without obtaining explicit permission from the airline ahead of time.

If you opt for a more significant smart bag that you’ll need to check, remember that the TSA places strict limits on lithium-ion batteries in checked luggage. Some smart bags are powered by AA or AAA batteries to get around that limitation. Smart bags powered that way don’t have built-in charging, but they can include other useful features like built-in electronic scales, GPS tracking, and electronic locks.

Enjoy Peace and Quiet With Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Listen to music, audiobooks, videos, and more.

Effectively shuts out distractions.

Less likely to bleed sound that could annoy seatmates.

Batteries may not last the entire flight.

Noise cancellation takes extra power.

Wireless noise-canceling headphones or earbuds shut out the outside world on a long flight. They’re pretty indispensable, with uses that range from listening to music from your phone, watching videos on your iPad, or even hooking into the plane’s in-flight entertainment system with the help of an adapter.

Headphones with cups covering your ears and in-ear earbuds, like AirPods Pro, are the best for flights because they prevent the most sound leakage and avoid annoying your neighbors. The downside is that wireless headphones and earbuds only last so long between charges. And noise cancellation requires additional power. Still, we consider noise-canceling headphones one of the most essential parts of any traveling kit.

Stash Wired Earbuds as a Backup

Easy backup for batter-powered headphones.

Compact and doesn't take up much space.

Can provide decent quality sound.

Some devices will need an adapter.

Wires can get tangled.

Packing a backup pair of wired headphones or earbuds is an easy solution to power-drained wireless headphones.

Most wired headphones take up too much space to pack as a backup, but foldable headphones are slightly more reasonable, and wired earbuds are compact enough to slip into your pocket.

Remember that some of your devices will need a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter if they don't have an audio jacks.

Try an Airplane Bluetooth Adapter

Use your wireless headphones with in-flight entertainment.

Works with other devices that don't have built-in Bluetooth.

Easy plug-and-play setup.

Some airlines use non-standard audio jacks.

It's one more thing to remember to keep charged.

Small and easily lost.

If you like taking advantage of in-flight entertainment options, consider packing an airplane-compatible Bluetooth adapter.

These adapters include a 3.5mm audio jack and a Bluetooth transmitter, so you can plug into the audio port of your armrest or seatback entertainment center and then pair your Bluetooth wireless headphones or earbuds. The result is that you can lean back and relax without worrying about tangled cords. You can also use these with portable game systems and gym equipment.

We like the Twelve South AirFly SE because it’s easy to use, has a flexible audio connector, and charges via USB-C , so you probably don’t need to pack an extra cable. There are various other options, so pick one compatible with your wireless headphones.

Keep Tabs on Your Gear With a Device Organizer

Keep your gadgets and wires nicely organized.

Less chance to accidentally forget something important.

Some include built-in batteries.

It's one more thing to pack.

It can be tough to find the right one to fit all your gear.

Sure, you can toss all your travel gadgets in a backpack or carry on and hope for the best, but why do that to yourself? Consider making a list of all your gear instead, and then pick out a device organizer that will allow you to store everything in a nice and orderly manner.

Some device organizers even come with built-in batteries for charging devices, so keep that in mind if you plan on packing a separate power bank.

Power Up With a Flexible Travel Charger

Charge multiple devices from one charger.

Don't need to worry about bringing additional international adapters.

Compact and easy to store.

Need to verify power needs of all your devices.

Still need to pack charging cables.

Space is limited, so you may consider picking up a portable charger that will work with all or most of your devices. Instead of packing all your chargers, consolidating them into one will save a lot of space and lighten your load.

If you’re traveling internationally, you can save yourself a lot of headaches by selecting a portable charger that works with all the electrical systems in each country you plan on visiting.

Simplify Your Life With a Multi-Charging Cable

Don't need to worry about packing multiple cables.

Less clutter in your carry-on.

Save money by not needing to buy charging cables during your trip.

Need to find one that works with all of your gadgets.

May still need to pack additional cables for data transfer.

A good multi-charging cable can simplify your traveling experience and save you from scrambling to find a charging cable at the duty-free store.

Pick a multi-charging cable with all the connections you’ll need to power all your devices, pair it with a travel charger, and you’ll be able to charge everything without digging through a mess of cables at the bottom of your carry-on.

Charge Mid-Air With a Portable Power Bank

Keep your devices powered even on long flights.

Power multiple devices at once.

Easier to charge the bank than individual devices when a only one outlet is available.

Airlines limit how much battery capacity you can pack.

Can't be placed in checked luggage, so you need to carry it at all times.

All of your travel gadgets require power, and you won’t always be able to find a power outlet. Airlines place limits on flying with batteries, and they don’t allow lithium-ion batteries in checked luggage, so keep that in mind when selecting a power bank .

It would be best if you generally stuck to power banks that provide no more than 27,000 mAh or 100 Wh. You may be able to pack two slightly larger batteries if you get special permission from the airline but don’t count on it.

We like the Omnicharge Omni 20+ for long flights because it’s very compact, provides wired and Qi wireless charging, charges via USB-C, and even has a built-in inverter. It also slides in under the airline limits with 20,000 mAh of stored power. If that’s out of your price range, pick one that stays within the airline’s limitations.

Catch Up On Your Reading With a Kindle

More comfortable to read than other screens.

Carry lots of books in a lightweight form factor.

Catch up on your reading wherever you find yourself.

Expensive initial purchase.

Need to buy ebooks as well.

Why pack physical books that occupy valuable real estate in your carry-on when you can bring several books in a device that takes up less space than a single paperback?

The Kindle Paperwhite is the obvious choice here since it’s lightweight, has plenty of storage space, and includes a built-in reading light, but any e-reader will accomplish the same basic task. If you go for a Kindle, consider checking out Kindle Unlimited for a low-cost way to boost your vacation reading list.

Pack a Tablet for Entertainment and Productivity

Multipurpose device for entertainment and productivity.

Compact and lightweight.

Good entertainment during layovers.

Expensive if you don't already have one.

Harder to work on than a laptop.

Tablets are remarkably flexible devices that don’t take up much space, making them great for long flights and layovers. They’re more compact than laptops and useful for both productivity and entertainment. You can use a tablet to listen to music or audiobooks, read ebooks, play games, catch up on email, browse the internet, or join a voice or video call if Wi-Fi is available.

The iPad Mini and iPad Air are both great options for travel since they’re compact and relatively low-cost (you might want to go with an iPad Pro if you’re looking to get some work done). An inexpensive Android tablet or Kindle Fire if you’re operating on a tighter budget.

Get Comfy With an Airplane Tablet Holder

Don't need to hold the tablet or phone the whole flight.

Good for children who are prone to knocking devices over.

Compact and easy to carry.

Doesn't work on bulkhead sets.

Can be compatibility issues with some airplane seats.

Tablets are great for entertainment on long flights, but they aren’t always comfortable to use in the cramped environs of a typical airplane seat. Instead of trying to awkwardly prop your tablet up on the tray table or your lab, consider a tablet holder that hangs off the back of the seat in front of you.

This isn’t useful if you find yourself in a bulkhead seat, but it makes for comfier viewing in other circumstances.

If you aren’t packing a tablet and relying on your phone for entertainment, consider picking up a tray table phone mount. These mounts clip securely to the tray table on the seatback in front of you, allowing you to watch videos without awkwardly holding your phone until your arm falls asleep.

Listen to Audiobooks from Audible

Hours and hours of entertainment.

Option to switch between audiobook and ebook for some titles.

Listen on a device you're bringing already.

Requires a paid subscription.

Audiobooks aren't for everyone.

Audiobooks provide great entertainment on a long flight. You don’t have to stop listening when it’s time to debark, hike to a connecting flight, or pick up your luggage.

In most cases, you won’t need to pack any additional hardware, as you can listen to audiobooks on your phone or tablet, and some Kindle e-readers even work with Audible . That last option is the best of both worlds since it lets you swap seamlessly between reading and listening whenever you want.

Store Music on Your Tablet or Phone for Offline Listening

Listen to your favorite music in airplane mode.

Pick and choose your favorite songs or even podcasts.

You can download a lot of songs.

Not available from every streaming service.

Takes up a lot of space on your phone.

Wi-Fi isn’t always available in planes and airports, so you may want to stock up on some music before you leave home. Streaming services with offline modes include Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music Unlimited.

By loading up your phone at home, you’ll never have to worry about whether or not you’re burning through your precious mobile data every time you hit play.

Beyond music, some video streaming services also allow you to download TV shows and movies for offline viewing.

Pack a Portable Game System For More Entertainment Options

Lots of gaming options.

Potential for multi-player fun.

Catch up on games you've been meaning to play.

Portable game systems take up a lot of space.

Expensive if you don't already own one.

We recommend the Nintendo Switch for console gamers and the Steam Deck for PC gamers.

The Nintendo Switch is a little smaller, weighs a bit less, and includes built-in options for both single and multiplayer games.

The Steam Deck is bulkier and has less battery life, but it offers a lot more flexibility and even has a full Linux desktop mode that might let you leave your laptop at home.

Stay Cool With a Mini Handheld Fan

Stay cool when air conditioning isn't available.

Small and compact.

Some can charge via USB.

One more thing to pack that takes up space.

Useless if the batteries die.

A mini handheld fan can be a lifesaver if you’re traveling anywhere remotely warm. While you can typically rely on the built-in air once you’re seated on your plane, mini handheld fans are great for cooling off while waiting to board.

Look for a fan with a built-in rechargeable battery to keep it powered up as needed.

Track Your Luggage with GPS or Bluetooth

Options for GPS and Bluetooth tracking.

GPS trackers can locate your luggage wherever it ends up.

Bluetooth trackers are convenient and don't require a subscription.

Most trackers rely on nearby devices that are connected to the same network.

Pinpoint locating is only available from a small number of trackers.

GPS trackers require an ongoing subscription.

The best way to make sure your luggage doesn’t get lost is to pick up a luggage tracker. GPS luggage trackers are more precise but typically require a monthly subscription. Some GPS trackers have substantial batteries, too, and the FAA rules state that lithium batteries in luggage trackers can’t exceed 0.3 grams in weight or 2.7 Wh in capacity.

The other option is to use something more commonly used as a car key tracker, like Apple AirTags or Tile Pro, Slim, and Stickers . They’re less expensive to purchase, and they also don’t require a subscription. The downside is that they aren’t as precise and rely on the proximity of other devices connected to the tracking system.

Get the Most out of Your Phone

You're already bringing your phone anyway.

Easy access to important documents.

Less digging around for documents in your bags.

Single point of failure if you lose your phone.

Digital drivers licenses aren't available everywhere.

Your phone is useful for more than just calls and texts, though, and it can enable a lot of helpful travel hacks to make your experience less hectic.

Before you head off to the airport, here are some useful things to set up on your phone:

  • Boarding pass : Most airlines support mobile boarding passes . For the easiest experience, store your mobile boarding pass on your phone so it’s ready when needed.
  • Passport : If you’re traveling internationally, a mobile passport app on your phone can help speed up clearing customs when you return home. That doesn’t mean you can leave your physical passport at home, but it can save some time.
  • Important documents : Take photos or scans of important documents and store them on your phone for easy access, even without internet access.  Use Notes to scan documents on iPhone and Google Drive to scan documents on Android .
  • Track your stuff : Trackers aren’t just for luggage. Consider tagging your most important gear with trackers so you can use your phone to track anything that gets misplaced.

You're Packing Your Carry-On Luggage Wrong. How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Bag

Your step-by-step guide to packing your carry-on to get you swiftly through TSA.

Make the most of that overhead bin space by finding the right carry-on suitcase, and learning the best way to pack it.

A carry-on bag is most people's security blanket, best friend and lifeline when traveling. Your carry-on often has essentials for the airplane - for me, that means mostly snacks but a carry-on may also include valuables such as passports, medicine, toiletries and cash. If you choose the  right carry-on bag  and pack it strategically, you can fit more and be hassled less as you move through the airport and TSA.

Following Transportation Security Administration guidelines for each major US airline is a must, and doing a little research on the latest rules and regulations can help you ace the experience without getting held up. (For more travel tips, explore the 12 travel essentials you need for every vacation and take a look at  this travel checklist .)

What TSA officials do isn't in your control, but what you pack and how how you pack it for your next trip is. Here's how to pack your carry-on bag efficiently for your next business or pleasure travel.

The best carry-on travel bags

Before you start packing, you'll have to find the right carry-on bag. Here are a few important things to keep in mind.

What size carry-on should you get?

The first and most important aspect to think about is size. Federal Aviation Administration regulations say carry-on items can't exceed dimensions of 22 by 14 by 9 inches, though you might find an inch or two of difference depending on the airline. The general rule is that it must fit under your seat or in the overhead enclosed storage compartment on the plane.

Here's a quick reference for size limits for the most popular US airlines.

Carry-on items by airline

Carry-ons should have an easy access tech compartment.

If you decide to bring electronics like a laptop , iPad , Kindle or other tablet on board, your carry-on should ideally have a separate, padded compartment for secure packing. Be sure these compartments are easily accessible, since at security checkpoints, the TSA will require you to remove your electronic devices and place them in the plastic X-ray tray.

Make sure you're carry-on is comfortable on your back or shoulder

Remember, you'll need to lug your carry-on bag or suitcase across the airport and down long corridors, and you might even need to run with it so you don't miss your connection. Consider whether you need padded handles or cushioned straps or a backpack or a rolling suitcase for ease.

The general rule is that all carry-ons must fit under your seat or in the overhead enclosed storage compartment on the plane.

How to pack your carry-on the right way

Though what to pack in your carry-on ultimately depends on your preferences, there are a few guidelines for the best way to pack your luggage:

  • Pack items in layers (shoes one layer, clothes one layer, electronics one layer, etc.).
  • Pack the things you'll use the least at the bottom of the bag.
  • Keep most of your valuables in your carry-on luggage, and store them in side compartments or safely padded around other items.
  • Place valuables at the bottom of your bag, away from the opening.
  • Keep your wallet, credit cards and cash in an inner pocket so they'll be harder to steal.
  • Pack a small, separate bag for toiletries. (Liquids, gels and aerosols packed in carry-on must follow the  3-1-1 liquids rule : 3.4 ounces or less per container; all liquids must fit in one quart size, clear, plastic, zip-top bag; one bag per passenger.)
  • Roll your clothes tightly to save space in your luggage.

Sometimes you lose your luggage. It happens. Though it's frustrating, it's important to pack a spare set of clothes (including socks and underwear!) in your carry-on to hold you over until your bags are found and returned. Pack clothing that can easily be rolled up and put in the bottom of your bag.

Rolled clothing can save space in your tight bag or suitcase.

Essential items for your carry-on bag

There's some items that are just better in your carry-on luggage. If you do decide to check a bag, be sure to keep these items with you on the flight. Most of these carry-on essentials are items that would be hard to replace or purchase when you get to your destination.

  • Prescriptions and medications
  • Contact lenses or glasses
  • Valuables like jewelry, wallets, passports, IDs and boarding passes
  • Cameras and smartphones
  • Entertainment like tablets, books and laptops
  • Headphones to watch TV or movies if a longer flight
  • Chargers for electronics
  • Printed itinerary, or hotel and flight confirmations

Explore this complete guide for essential travel items you may forget to pack.

Place your larger electronics in secure yet easily accessible compartments, since you'll need to pull them out at TSA security checkpoints.

What you should never pack in your carry-on bag

The TSA has specific guidelines covering which items are banned from flights, and the agency takes those rules very seriously. In 2022 alone, the TSA screened nearly 761 million passengers and crew members nationwide, and it confiscated a record number of firearms (6,301) and many other items. TSA policy says that individuals carrying weapons, especially loaded firearms, can face fines or criminal penalties.

These are some of the most commonly confiscated items:

  • Box cutters, utility knives and razors
  • Bats, clubs and blades
  • Swiss Army knives
  • Sharp

If in doubt, always refer to the  TSA's guidelines on packing for flights, to ensure you have safe and easy travels.

Urban Outfitters

Baggu Large Nylon Crescent Bag

Dimensions: 10.5 × 19.5 × 5.25 inches | Weight: N/A (not listed) | Materials: 100% recycled nylon

A beach bag calls for some pretty specific features: it needs to be durable and water-resistant, it should be big enough to hold bulky towels and ideally, it has a simple shape so sand won’t get lodged in the nooks and crannies. After much research, the Baggu Crescent Bag fits the bill. Its adjustable strap can be worn across the chest or as a tighter-fitting shoulder bag, the large size is roomy enough for a couple towels and a change of clothes and the zippered interior pocket keeps your wallet and keys secure. The quick-drying ripstop nylon is not only recycled, it’s also durable enough to withstand the windiest—and wettest—of beach days. Consider adding a few of Baggu’s fun printed flat pouches for additional organization.

There’s a water bottle holder that zips away when not in use, a molded EVA back panel for wearable comfort and breathability, a tamper-resistant zipper and tech features like built-in tablet storage, an RFID-blocking pocket for your cards and a cord-pass through for charging your devices in different pockets. If you’re running or moving around a lot, there’s also a stabilizer strap that clips on to keep the sling even more secure to your body. Unlike some sling styles, this bag has multiple zippered storage compartments, the main one opening extra wide for easier access.

Most Versatile Crossbody Bag For Travel

Four ways to wear it.

Lo & Sons

Lo & Sons Waverley 2 in Nappa Leather

Dimensions: 5.6 x 8 x 2 inches | Weight: 0.6 pounds | Materials: Nappa, Saffiano or cactus leather

When you’re on the go, sometimes the last thing you want is to ruin the flow of the day by making a pit stop at the hotel to change out a bag before dinner. We like the Lo & Sons Waverley for its inventive versatility that adapts to your needs. The minimal leather design has an adjustable strap that can be worn 4 ways: as a hands-free belt bag, a longer crossbody, a casual shoulder bag or an elevated clutch with (or without) a wristlet. The main compartment is large enough for the essentials and the zippered inner pocket keeps smaller items secure no matter where your day—or night—takes you.

Best Belt Bag For Travel

Hands-free storage in a slim profile, lululemon everywhere belt bag 1 l.

Dimensions: 7.5 x 2 x 5 inches | Weight: N/A (not listed) | Materials: Nylon, recycled polyester

Over 22,500 reviewers agree: the Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag is sleek, lightweight and versatile enough to be worn just about anywhere your travels take you. It has a water-repellant nylon exterior and one main compartment, three mesh interior pockets for added organization and a back zipper for your phone or cards. Its adjustable strap can tighten for comfortable wearing around your waist or it can be extended as a crossbody sling. With a 1L capacity, this bag is definitely on the smaller side, so you might want to consider their larger 2L size if you need more space.

Best Crossbody Bag For Men

Rugged looks for when you're on the go, cotopaxi coso 2l hip pack.

Dimensions: 11 x 7 x 3 inches | Weight: 10 ounces | Materials: Recycled nylon, recycled polyester

This easy-wearing hip pack from Cotopaxi combines an urban rugged look with smart storage solutions. The recycled nylon exterior is durable with a matte TPU coating, making it water-resistant and easy to clean, while a fleece interior pocket stores your phone or other small devices without any scratch risk. There’s multiple grab handles for easy carrying, secure pockets for smaller items and in addition to the main zippered compartment, the exterior front flap pocket can store a rolled-up lightweight jacket when you get warm on the go. G-hooks on both sides can be adjusted for customized storage and it can be comfortably worn as a crossbody on the front or back, or around the waist as a belt bag.

Best Leather Crossbody Bag For Travel

Three storage sections in a minimal package, quince italian leather triple compartment crossbody.

Dimensions: 7.8 x 9.5 x 3 inches | Weight: 1.54 pounds | Materials: Leather

Quince’s smooth Italian leather crossbody might look simple from the outside, but there’s actually a lot of unexpected storage inside. The bag has three main compartments—two zippered sections flanking one open area that closes with snaps—plus three internal zippered pockets to take your organization a step further. It also comes with two detachable straps that allow for crossbody or wristlet wear. Quince is known for its fair prices and ethical manufacturing process, and if that’s not impressive enough, the brand also offers a generous 365-day return policy.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

As much as accessories like packing cubes and luggage straps make travel a bit easier, they can't perform without a great suitcase. And if you’re in need of a luggage upgrade, you’re in luck because Amazon has massive, wide-spread discounts on some of its top-rated and best-selling carry-ons , weekenders , and checked bags .

When choosing the perfect bag for your next trip out of the countless deals, brands, and features, the options can feel quite overwhelming. My secret? I turn to flight attendants and pilots for expert advice on the best luggage on the market. With their extensive experience of navigating busy airports and packing for long-haul flights, they have insider knowledge on what works ( and what doesn't ). But if you don’t have a trusty cabin crew member on speed dial, no worries. I’ve curated a list of the best deals on flight attendant- and pilot-approved luggage and travel bags during this limited-time sale (think: Samsonite, Travelpro , and more up to 57 percent off).

Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside 20-inch Carry-on

If you’re looking for a suitcase that is not just flight attendant-approved but also loved by Travel + Leisure editors , then this Samsonite carry-on should absolutely be on your radar. According to one flight attendant , its “smooth rolling” wheels and sleek construction “holds up during [their] daily travels.” And with a generous 44 percent discount this week, this deal is simply too good to pass up.

Delsey Paris Titanium Hardside 25-inch Checked-medium Suitcase

On their personal time, flight attendants use this " great quality bag " from Delsey Paris. In fact, it earned a stamp of approval from one cabin member, who said they "consider myself a luggage expert as I have basically been living out of suitcases and hotels for 28 years." Get it for $70 off this weekend during Amazon's flash luggage sale.

AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner 20-inch Carry-on Suitcase

Are you a frequent traveler on a quest to find a durable bag to accompany on your adventures?  This flight attendant found themselves on a similar journey — until they discovered the ideal bag: the AmazonBasics Hardside Carry-on . Taking to the review section, they were happy to report that it “rolls with complete ease and is sturdy, too. My arms and back feel absolutely zero stress… It feels like it's floating.” Between its smooth-rolling wheels and lightweight build, it's a must-snag bag, especially while it's only $72.

Ibfun Weekender Bag

Pro tip: If a flight attendant ever deems something perfect, consider that a sign that you need it in your travel repertoire. It just so happens that this lightweight weekender bag has been dubbed “ perfection for frequent travelers ” by flight attendants for its spacious yet compact build that can “easily fit two to three pairs of shoes in the bottom compartment, and enough things to be comfortable on a two-day trip.” As if it couldn’t get any better (aside from its $34 price tag), this bag also comes with a crossbody and toiletry pack, which are super handy for packing all of your additional personal belongings.

Level8 Store Rolling Carry-on 20-inch Suitcase

This sleek suitcase is made with an ultra-durable hardshell, eight silent 360-degree spinning wheels, and spacious compartments. In fact, one pilot said they have “used it for over 100 flights” and absolutely love how it “fits perfectly in the overhead compartment of regular and regional jets, the wheels are solid, and it glides easily through the airport.” If you want to give this pilot-approved suitcase a try for yourself, be sure to clip the on-site coupon for $15 off.

Hanke Multifunctional Hardshell 26-inch Suitcase

Prime members are privy to particularly great deals this weekend, including this Hanke medium-checked suitcase that’s on exclusive sale for $192. Aside from its stellar deal, one flight attendant said that, after “searching for the perfect work bag for years, [they’ve] finally found it.” They also mentioned that this bag “exceeded [their] expectations” and that their “coworkers are now asking where to find this little suitcase.”

Tprc Smart Underseat Carry-on Suitcase

I am absolutely smitten with my underseat carry-on . I traveled with one for the first time this year and was blown away by its seamless transportability, and that it fit perfectly under the airplane seat in front of me. Flight attendants seem to agree, and are especially loving this underseat carry-on from Tprc. Despite its size, the bag is able to fit "sneakers, my service shoes, extra uniform, jeans, two shirts, and yoga pants just in the main compartment," one flight attendant shared , adding, "With the pockets, there's still plenty of room for some toiletries, makeup, and some other essentials.”

U.S. Traveler Store Expandable Carry-on and Duffel Set

This luggage set instantly caught my attention with its remarkable $20 discount and 18,000-plus five-star ratings — many of which are from cabin members. Flight attendants “ absolutely love this luggage set ” and gushed that it's “durable and dependable," and offers "so much room" when they overpack. Even more, one chimed in to share that this two-for-one set is “absolutely great” and hasn’t shown a single sign of wear and tear (which means a lot considering how much flight attendants travel).

Travelpro Maxlite 5 Softside Expandable Carry-on 21-inch Suitcase

If you’re jet-setting around the world, you'll need a bag that can withstand the stress of travel. This suitcase has been praised as the “ best lightweight suitcase ” by flight attendants for its expandable design and sleek, lightweight exterior. But they aren’t the only ones who love it, as pilots have also raved about its quality and convenience in the review section. One added that “this bag is great quality and just the right size… The rollers are smooth and it is easy to drag through the airport.” And as a treat, it's discounted to $145 today.

SwissGear 1900 Scansmart Travel Backpack

If you’ve never used a travel backpack in lieu of a carry-on, you don’t know what you’re missing out on. They’re surprisingly spacious — so much so that I routinely pack them for weekend trips — while remaining easy to carry around because of their ergonomic design. One longtime fan raved that they have been using this bag “several times a month" on flights and "never have issues with TSA.” They also mentioned that it’s been approved by their flight attendant friend, who has been using it for the last three years.
