Group Visit

Group tours.

Howard University welcomes high schools, community colleges, and other special groups with a minimum of 10 students and no more than 55 students to schedule a visit to our beautiful campus. Unfortunately, due to capacity constraints and to ensure we can provide a memorable experience we are unable to accommodate groups larger than 55 students. We require groups to provide one (1) chaperone per ten (10) students to ensure effective management of the group. Groups smaller than 10 may schedule a visit using the individual and family registration form.

We offer group visits during the Fall and Spring semesters at the following times:

Monday through Friday at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m.

If a time is not available in the portal, then the requested time slot is unavailable.

Groups may request the following:

Information session by an admissions officer;

Campus tour by a student ambassador; or

Information session and campus tour

During the visit, confirmed groups will be led on a walking tour around campus by one of our Student Ambassadors. While on tour, each group will be provided with information on Howard’s legacy and tradition, academics, housing, and extra-curricular activities. To submit a request for a group visit, please follow the link below, and we will do our best to honor your requested visit date and time. Our team will reach out to you approximately 3 weeks prior to the requested visit date with a confirmation or denial of your group visit.

While we value the opportunity to engage and connect with as many groups as possible, we acknowledge that timing and circumstances do not always allow us the capacity to do so. Groups who desire more advance notice than 3 weeks prior to the requested visit date or those we are unable to accommodate are invited to explore our campus on their own using our informative self-guided tour .

Group visits are available for high-school students only and group size can range from 10 to 40 guests (students and chaperones).

Groups must include at least one chaperone for every 10 students. Chaperones are expected to remain with the group at all times.

If the number of students changes after you have made your reservation please contact our office with an updated number at least three days prior to your visit.

Due to limited availability of staff and facilities, we cannot accommodate all requests. Groups are scheduled on a first-come first-served basis and require at least  two weeks advance notice.

If you are scheduling a group visit for an elementary or middle school, please e-mail Tammy Lawson .

On-Campus Visit:

Your visit will include a 90-minute tour of campus and a 30-minute admissions presentation. You may also select optional meetings with the Student Office of Financial Aid and/or the Cultural and Equity Center.

The walking tour of campus will occur regardless of weather conditions. Please make sure your students are prepared to walk around campus, are wearing comfortable shoes, and are dressed appropriately for the weather.

If anyone in your group has any special needs please let us know in advance of the visit.

When your visit is confirmed you will receive driving directions and parking information. Please be sure that the driver has these directions and follows the parking instructions provided. We will not provide parking vouchers for groups that don't follow parking instructions.

Please leave early enough that if you encounter possible delays it will not impact your visit. Facilities and staff schedules are limited. In the event of a late arrival, we will have to adjust your schedule and may have to cancel certain activities or significantly shorten your tour of campus. Louisville is in the Eastern Time Zone. Please plan your travel accordingly.

If your group wants to arrive early, stay after the visit, or eat on campus, you are welcome to do so. We ask that you coordinate directly with our Dining Services   Office   to make arrangements . Our Dining Services Office can assist you with deciding where to eat on campus and arranging payment. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide vouchers for on-campus dining.

Encourage your students to ask questions on the tour and during the presentation. View example questions . The best visits are the ones that are the most interactive. We want your students to get the most out of their time on our campus!

Group visits.

Student guide leading tour

Group visits are available for high school teachers, counselors, or community leaders to bring prospective students who are in 9th-12th grade to Colorado State University.

Our group visits provide students with an overview of the college admissions process, promote higher education as an attainable goal, and allow students to experience campus.

Groups may customize their visit by selecting sessions to meet their students’ needs including an information presentation led by an admissions representative, a student-led walking tour of campus, a presentation from one of our campus partners, a student panel presentation, an interactive activity, and lunch on campus.

Visits typically include at least three sessions and last for three hours. Learn more about reservations, group sizes, and visit activities below, and check availability on the reservation calendar to request your visit today.

Ready to visit?

You are encouraged to build a visit that is unique to your group. When making your reservation, you will have a number of options and activities to choose from. Most visits include:

  • Welcome and admissions presentation (30 minutes)
  • Walking tour of campus (1.5 hours)
  • Lunch (1 hour – optional). Your group can eat in a dining hall at $14 per person or get takeout from restaurants in the Lory Student Center.

Please note that we will make every effort to fulfill each request; however, we cannot guarantee that every request will be met.

Reservations are required for group visits and must be scheduled at least three weeks in advance. Dates fill up quickly, so please be sure to check the calendar often and register as soon as you know your preferred date(s). We encourage earlier reservations to better ensure that your group is able to come on your desired date and we are able to meet your group’s needs.

If you need to cancel your visit, we ask for 48 hours notice (excluding weather-related or unavoidable issues).

Our office is committed to providing each group a quality experience. To ensure this, we are unable to accommodate groups larger than 50 due to the limited availability of staff and tour guides.

If your group is fewer than 15 people, please contact the group visit coordinator directly before signing up online.

Group visit reservations are available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Due to limited availability, we are currently unable to accommodate groups coming from out-of-state. Reservations are not available during university recess.

  • Comfortable shoes
  • Water bottle
  • Mobile phone or camera
  • A great attitude!

Because we want to provide the best possible experience, we ask that your group respect the following guidelines:

Timely arrival : Arriving on time is vital. If you are running late, please contact the group visit coordinator immediately so we can attempt to adjust your visit itinerary. Facility and university representative schedules are limited, so in the event of a late arrival, timed activities will likely be adjusted.

Group ratio : Please provide an adequate number of chaperones. Chaperones will be required to accompany the group at all times during the visit. Our required ratio for group visits is 1 adult to 15 students. We train our Admissions Ambassadors so they can provide you with an excellent visit. Admissions Ambassadors are responsible for providing campus tours, not for controlling the behavior of visiting students. If students become too disruptive on a tour, the Ambassadors are authorized to end the tour immediately.

Appropriate dress : The visit will include a substantial amount of walking, and majority of the time will be spent outside. Check the weather report before your visit and encourage all students to wear comfortable clothing and shoes.

Reciprocal respect : We welcome your organization to our campus! Colorado State University, first and foremost, is an educational institution. Please ensure your organization’s participants show respect to the university and its students, faculty, and staff. Failure to do so can result in early conclusion of the visit and limited availability for future visits by your organization. Please direct your students and chaperones to turn off all cell phones when appropriate so they don’t miss any of the exciting information we have to share with them. Students should understand the professional academic atmosphere of the campus and be prepared to represent their school positively at all times.

Lunch : Groups who are planning to have lunch while on campus are expected to display the same behavior in CSU dining facilities that they would display in their own school cafeterias. This includes refraining from running, yelling, or cutting in line. After getting food, it is appropriate to sit at a table to eat while remaining considerate of staff and current college students carrying out their daily activities. Additionally, individuals need to clear their table by taking dishes and trash to the dish return before departing.

Cancellation notice: If you find it necessary to cancel your visit, we appreciate that you give at least two days’ notice. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the group visit coordinator.

There's something about this place

Where we are says a lot about who we are. Our 295-acre campus is smack-dab in the middle of some of the most beautiful places to be outside anywhere. We jog in the morning, bike to school, and roll along 13th Avenue to meet friends. We ski down mountains, float down rivers, and play along the beaches on the weekends. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel right at home. This place feels familiar, green, and friendly, but also modern, totally connected, and cosmopolitan. It’s kind of perfect—an extraordinary academic community surrounded by a quintessential college town. It’s alive with music, culture, food, art, and just the right amount of weird to keep things interesting.

Iraq militant group says it is resuming attacks on US forces as base in Syria is targeted

First attack on US forces since early February comes day after Iraq’s prime minister returns from US visit

An Iraqi militant group has said it will resume attacks on US forces in the country, as it appeared to claim responsibility for a strike on an American military base in north-eastern Syria which saw at least five rockets launched from the Iraqi town of Zummar.

Sunday’s strike against US forces is the first since early February, when Iranian-backed groups in Iraq stopped their attacks against US troops.

It comes one day after Iraq’s prime minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, returned from a visit to the United States and met with Joe Biden at the White House.

Iraq’s Kataib Hezbollah said Iraqi armed groups had decided to resume attacks on the US presence in the country after seeing little progress on talks to achieve the exit of American troops during al-Sudani’s visit to Washington.

“What happened a short while ago is the beginning,” the group said.

Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor, said several rockets had been fired “from Iraqi territory at the Kharab al-Jir base” in north-east Syria, where US forces are stationed.

A statement from the Iraqi security forces accused “outlaw elements of having targeted a base of the international coalition with rockets in the heart of Syrian territory”, at about 9.50pm local time.

Iraqi forces responded to the attack by launching a major search operation in northern Nineveh province which found the vehicle used in the attack, they said in a statement.

The security forces burned the vehicle involved, the statement added.

After a series of rocket attacks and drone strikes by pro-Iran armed factions against US soldiers deployed in the Middle East in the early part of the year, there had been several weeks of calm.

In January, a drone attack killed three US soldiers in the Jordanian desert on the Syrian border. In response, the US military struck dozens of targets in Syria and Iraq , aiming for pro-Iran forces, and drawing criticism from the governments of both countries.

The United States has about 2,500 soldiers stationed in Iraq and nearly 900 across the border in Syria as part of an international coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group.

Hamas releases video of Israeli hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin

A video of Israeli American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin was released Wednesday by Hamas' military wing, Al-Qassam Brigades.

Speaking to the camera in Hebrew, the 23-year-old, whose left arm is severed below his elbow, angrily asks the Israeli government to bring home the hostages, as the war in Gaza entered its 200th day Tuesday.

It was unclear when the video was recorded or the conditions under which he spoke, given that he is a Hamas captive. It is likewise not clear if he is still alive.

In a separate video shot Oct. 7, Goldberg-Polin was seen injured by a grenade blast before being loaded into a truck during the chaotic violence at the Supernova music festival in southern Israel near kibbutz Re'im.

He was among 250 people taken captive that day , according to Israeli officials, who said 1,200 people were killed as Hamas launched multipronged attacks on the country, sparking the war in the Gaza Strip. More than 34,000 people, including some 13,000 children, have been killed since Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza, according to the Palestinian enclave’s Health Ministry.

Israeli-American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin in a video

Wearing a dark red shirt and sitting on a gray plastic chair, he references his 200 days in captivity and a holiday. Although he does not specifically reference which holiday, Jewish people celebrated Passover on Monday night.

He also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for having yet to strike a deal for the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza.

Al-Qassam Brigades released the video amid months of sputtering negotiations between Israel and Hamas for a cease-fire and hostage release deal.

Goldberg-Polin said that the government should think of the hostages whom he described as living underground and in need of medical attention.

He added that 70 detainees had been killed in Israeli airstrikes.

NBC News could not independently verify this claim and Israeli officials have previously said about 130 people remain in captivity in Gaza, with 30 of them believed to be dead. As many as six of the hostages still in Gaza are U.S. citizens.

At the end of the 2-minute, 43-second video, Goldberg-Polin told his parents that he loved them and missed them. “I expect and hope to see you very soon after all this tragedy is over,” he said.

Israel has criticized videos like this as psychological warfare.

In a statement, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum said, "Hersh’s cry is the collective cry of all the hostages — their time is rapidly running out. With each passing day, the fear of losing more innocent lives grows stronger."

"This distressing video serves as an urgent call to take swift and decisive action to resolve this horrific humanitarian crisis and ensure the safe return of our loved ones," the statement said.

A U.S. official confirmed that the administration received the video Monday and was in touch with Goldberg-Polin's family. The FBI’s Hostage Recovery Fusion Cell is examining the video for any information about his captivity.

In an interview with NBC News earlier this month, Goldberg-Polin's mother, Rachel Goldberg-Polin, who has become a vocal advocate in the effort to free the remaining hostages in Gaza, talked about the uncertainty and the unbearable wait that families like hers have had to endure.

Rachel Goldberg-Polin said that her son had hidden in a roadside bomb shelter with 27 other people, but militants threw hand grenades and sprayed gunfire into the bunker, killing many and injuring others, including her son.

Survivors and video from the Hamas GoPro camera that was shared with the family revealed that Goldberg-Polin had half of his left arm blown off before he was taken to Gaza.

His last text messages to his parents after the attack started and before he was taken hostage were: “I love you” and “I’m sorry.”

Rachel Goldberg-Polin said she believed that Netanyahu’s government should compromise in order to stop the suffering in both Israel and Gaza, and sees her son and other hostages' suffering, along with the deaths of Palestinians in Gaza, as innocent people paying the price on both sides.

“I’m happy that I’m upset when I see that the other side is also in pain, that I’m not celebrating their pain because that would mean that I’m not human anymore,” she said.

She added that she hoped there is a mother like her in Gaza who may be trying to help her son.

Here's why you must visit the Gulag Museum in Moscow

admissions group visit

Children who were once labeled "enemies of the people" are now advanced in their years, but they can still recall the most terrible moments of their lives, when people in uniforms came for their parents late at night - the last time they ever saw them. Today, a young woman watches these video interviews in a room at the Gulag Museum. She starts to cry. A group of high school students hang on the guide's every word, dismay written on their faces. It seems they find it difficult to imagine that in the 1930s kids their own age found themselves behind barbed wire. Meanwhile, a group of foreigners sit in the museum cafe, trying to digest what they have just seen and unable to say a word.

In a prisoner's shoes

The Gulag History Museum  used to be based in a tiny building, but it recently moved to new premises and, with its huge archive, it now has a home of its own. The designers tried to make it look like a prison camp: intimidating steel gates, brickwork, dim light and lots of sullen and drab black color. From the very first minute, a visitor is immersed in the atmosphere of the darkest side of Soviet power - the terrible years of the Great Terror and repressions.

admissions group visit

In the first room, you're greeted by numerous doors – a door from a camp barracks, a door from a cell in a remand prison in Magadan, a door from one of the Seven Sisters buildings in Moscow, from where people were taken away forever – it is a metaphor of moving to another, terrible world .

admissions group visit

In the execution chamber, the floor is strewn with empty casings, while portraits of the murdered are projected onto a brick wall, one replacing another to the sound of cocking the gun. Archival footage shows prisoners working at a logging camp. There are personal items, including those found in mass graves. Once you're surrounded by all this, it is difficult to recover.

A system of reprisals from 1917 to Stalin's death

The purpose of the museum is to trace not only the history of the camps themselves, but of the entire system of political repressions. In order to show how executions without trial and investigation became part of the legal practice of the USSR, the museum displays documents, NKVD resolutions and quotes from leaders of the Revolution .

admissions group visit

The Soviet authorities believed that in order to build a new world, it was necessary to exterminate people who, in one way or another, allegedly sabotaged it. The list of these categories of people was forever expanding. “Repression for the attainment of economic ends is a necessary weapon of the socialist dictatorship,” said one of the main ideologists of the revolution, Leon Trotsky .

admissions group visit

The first political prisoners in the USSR were put into existing prisons and monasteries, from where monks were being expelled. A separate section of the exhibition is devoted to the Solovki Special-Purpose Camp, the first of its kind. Later, in the 1930s, during the years of the Great Terror, camps were built across the country and convict labor became one of the pillars of the Soviet economy.

For the first time, Gulag is presented through multimedia

The museum also offers audio versions of memoirs of people who went through the camps: the author of The Kolyma Tales , Varlam Shalamov; Alexander Solzhenitsyn (who has a separate room dedicated to his life); Leo Tolstoy’s daughter Alexandra; and many others .

admissions group visit

An interactive map of the Gulag shows the chronology, location, number of prisoners and types of camps (corrective labor, special, screening and filtration) throughout the country. It is available online, so you can see it without visiting the museum - gulagmap.ru .

With the help of a VR helmet, you can take a virtual tour with museum director Roman Romanov around what remains of the Butugychag camp in the Russian Far East, where inmates worked in uranium mines without wearing any radiation protection. The museum plans to develop more virtual tours like this .

admissions group visit

All information in the museum is translated into English; same as all the audio materials, and the videos have English subtitles. The museum has a documents center, where one can get information about victims of repressions.
