An Enriching Adventure: Preparing For Your Family Farm Stays In Geelong

Planning a family farm stay in the beautiful city of Geelong? Here are five essential things to know to ensure a memorable and rewarding experience for the entire family.

1. Choosing The Right Farm

Firstly, choose a farm that provides a balance of recreational activities and educational experiences. While some farms focus on a relaxing, laid-back atmosphere, others prioritize hands-on participation in daily farming procedures.

2. Preparing Children For The Farm Experience

Prepare your young ones for the reality of a working farm. Teach them about the tasks they might be asked to help with, such as feeding the livestock or planting seeds. Emphasize the fact that a farm stay isn’t just a vacation, but also a learning opportunity about where our food comes from.

3. Packing Essential Items

Remember, a farm stay requires more than regular vacation gear. Pack sturdy, closed-toe shoes, long pants to protect against scratches and insect bites, hats for sun protection, and warm clothing for cooler nights.

4. Understanding Farm Safety

Before your visit, familiarize your family with basic farm safety rules, such as not wandering into a restricted area and how to interact carefully with farm animals. Each farm typically has their own set of safety guidelines that guests need to adhere to strictly.

5. Getting More From The Farm Stay

Lastly, maximize your farm stay experience by participating in farm chores, asking the farmers questions about their work, and spending time observing the workings of the farm. The more you engage, the more enriching your stay will be.

In conclusion, a family farm stay in Geelong is not just a fun vacation but also an educational journey. By prioritizing safety, preparing the right gear, and engaging with farm life, you’re setting up for an unforgettable experience.

Practical Tips For Visiting Geelong Wineries

Winery tours are supposed to be fun (and they are!) but they can be a little intimidating if you’ve never been before. Here are some tips to make your wine tasting trip an enjoyable one.

Dress appropriately

Smart casual dress is appropriate for touring these beautiful properties. Wear dark colours to hide any spills and avoid dangling sleeves. Ladies leave the heels at home and wear a pair of comfy flats.

And a crossbody bag is a good idea to keep your hands free. If you have long hair tie it back so it doesn’t get in the way when using the “spit bucket”.

Be careful about tastes and scents

Coffee, mint chewing gum, and lollies will mess with your palate.

Your ability to taste is connected to your sense of smell, and strong perfumes and aftershave can overpower the wine tasting experience.

Try different things

Don’t just stick to the wines you already know. Put yourself out there and try something new. Who knows, you could discover an amazing new favourite.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions

A guided tour is the perfect place to ask questions and learn more about wine tasting and the winemaking process.

After several tastings, it’s easy to get confused about which wine you liked most. So take some notes and you won’t forget what pleased you most.

Water Water Water

All that winetasting can sneak up on you, so drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

Follow the right tasting technique

Wine is kept and served at the correct temperature for the ultimate taste experience. Holding your glass by the bowl will alter the temperature and thus the taste of the wine. The correct technique is to swirl the wine to aerate it by holding the stem of the glass.

Don’t forget to spit

No one likes to waste wine. But if you swallow every drop you taste it won’t be the wine that gets wasted, it will be you!

So grab that spit bucket and spit like a sailor.

Drinking wine is meant to be a fun and pleasurable experience, so don’t take it too seriously.

The Geelong region offers an enjoyable and friendly cellar door experience. Which best winery Geelong tour will you choose?

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN GEELONG: FAMILY FRIENDLY

The beautiful facility is dense with immersive, interactive exhibits that celebrate play-based learning. Considerate change room facilities, pram parking and low-sensory spaces ensure it’s a comfortable visit, and the onsite café has lots of healthy snacks (and great coffee to boot).

51 McKillop Street, Geelong

Graze on crispy fish and chips all over town

There’s no better place to unwrap a classic fish and chip lunch than in a seaside town like Geelong (and it’s a universally kid-approved meal). Take the family on a fish and chip tour of the city and find your favourite. Start at the Geelong Boat House , a local icon that’s perched over the water on a barge, where you can eat freshly delivered seafood, cooked simply, at tables on the gangplank or upstairs on the bridge deck. Other waterfront venues where you can get a killer rendition include Fishermen’s Pier , King George Fish and Chips , and Sailor’s Rest .

Frolick away the day at Eastern Beach

Spend the day splashing in seawater and feel your worldly stresses melt away. Eastern Beach is located conveniently at the city’s waterfront on Corio Bay, and is home to a charming art-deco sea-bathing complex that was first built in the 1930s. Here you’ll find an enclosed sea bath, boardwalk, diving towers, floating islands and children’s pool for the whole family to enjoy. Meanwhile a bustling kiosk, barbecue facilities and terraced lawns provide everything you need for a leisurely post-dip picnic.

THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN GEELONG: EAT & DRINK

Start the day off right with a breakfast at one of these delicious geelong cafes.

Victoria’s second largest city has firmly established itself as a top tier place to eat and drink and their café scene is no different. Locals and visitors are spoiled for choice with acclaimed brew bars, trendy bagel shops, family-friendly cafés and healthy havens all at their front door. Pick up a coffee on your way to the beach at Pavilion or refuel with a sit down brunch after your swim at Tonton - just two of our favourites and both of which become just as delightful dinner time haunts, for delicious share plates and refreshing cocktails.

Dine at these unmissable Geelong restaurants

You’ll never be short of an unforgettable meal in Geelong, where the dining options are as brilliant as they are broad. Consult our guide to the best restaurants in Geelong for all the must-book places to put on your radar, from the highly acclaimed Igni , a fine diner where everything is cooked over wood fire, to the cosy Bistrot St Jean , a quintessentially French spot where the onion soup is steamy and carafés of wine are flowing.

Embark on a day of tastings with a friendly wine tour

Geelong and the wider Bellarine region produce some of the finest wines in the state, and the best way to experience the cream of the crop (without worrying about finding a designated driver) is to hop on a winery tour. Experienced operators such as Wilson’s Wine Tours , For the Love of Grape and Geelong Winery Tours offer convenient pick up and drop offs, tastings at all the top cellar doors, delicious lunches and invaluable insights. While there’s a diverse range of varietals grown throughout the area, pinot noir, chardonnay and shiraz are done particularly well.

Sink a cold one at Geelong’s many breweries

More of a beer person? Geelong has you covered for that, too. The Little Creatures outpost here has become as much of a destination as the original brewery in Fremantle. It’s the birthplace of their Furphy ale, that staple of bottle shops and barbecues everywhere, and continues to be 100 per cent brewed in Geelong to this day. Swing by for that classic brewery experience: bustling canteen, fresh tap beers and seeing where the magic happens. Little Creatures also kickstarted a local brewery scene that’s stronger than ever – so put Valhalla Taproom , Blackmans Brewery and White Rabbit Barrel Hall on your visit list too.

Continue exploring this unforgettable part of the world with the help of our picks for great accommodation in Torquay , Lorne and all along the Great Ocean Road . And why not stay on the road with eight more bucket list road trips to take across Victoria .

Example Itinerary

We will customise the day to you, and we will do our best to make sure that you are only sipping on the fine wine that these regions have to offer! You can start the planning process here keep in mind our expert knowledge will be able to guide you and if you decide to leave it up to us here is what your day could look like for a party of four on the Bellarine Wine Trail.

Top tips for a great winery tour

Try and stay on a schedule to get the most out of your day, this is easier with smaller groups. however, larger groups can easily fill an hour at each winery., know what the weather conditions will be like and prepare accordingly, you don’t have to try every wine – pick out your favourites and go from there. some wineries have over ten different wines to try, visiting six wineries means a lot of wine to try., drink plenty of water the day before and throughout the day – on some wine tours you will have the opportunity to taste 45 different wines, and that can sneak up on you., many of the wines you taste on a winery tour are nothing short of delicious, those that aren’t so delicious feel free to spit out, there is no shame in doing so., be sure to let us know if you have any special requirements well and truly in advance, try several wines at different wineries before you buy and speak to me about this also as i have tried many of the wines throughout the region and i will do my best to steer you in the right direction where you get the best wine for you hard earned dollars..
