REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

“Absolutely EVERYTHING about this trip was perfect: itinerary, food, lodgings, trip leaders, educational opportunities. A perfect example of why Wilderness Travel will always be our first choice when planning adventures.”
“We were taught so much beyond the usual viewpoint given to a tourist that I felt I had a much deeper understanding of the culture and history than I would have if traveling with a different company.”
“An incredible variety of activities was packed into the trip, yet we never felt rushed. It would be impossible to do what we did in the same period of time without the expertise of WT guides.”
“I have dreamed of taking this trip for years. Truly this journey exceeded my expectations on all fronts. The wildlife, terrain, people, staff and fellow trip mates made it an adventure to always treasure. I feel blessed and fortunate. Thank you Wilderness Travel. You have my complete confidence.”
“Because of our Trek Leader’s vast experience in the area, we used several trails that aren’t known to many trekkers and we were invited into Sherpa homes, which was wonderful. I had been dreaming of this trip for 30 years and now those dreams are fulfilled.”
“Couldn’t have asked for a more interesting trip and two outstanding guides, accommodations, and meals. This was our fourth trip with Wilderness Travel and one of the best (although we say that about every trip we have been on!)”

“This was my first trip to India and I cannot imagine a better introduction. Because of the care with which the trip had been planned and organized, I was able to relax, enjoy, and try to fully absorb the experience without spending even a moment concerned about the quotidian details of the trip. What a luxury.”
“Everyone was so thorough and helpful. It was like being whisked around on a magic carpet. Doors opened, every wish fulfilled, amazing service!”
“It was an indescribable, life-affirming experience that I will always cherish. In particular, I wanted to commend your selection of Trip Leaders. Their skill, thoughtfulness, and dedication made the entire trip seem effortless even though the challenge was great.”

15 Great Natural and Wildlife Adventure Travel Trips

Some of the most amazing adventure travel experiences include interactions with wildlife in their natural habitats. There is nothing quite like spotting wild creatures in exotic locations around the globe, and fortunately you can have these types of experience on all seven continents. With that in mind, these are our favorite nature and wildlife adventures, all of which should be on your bucket list.

Explore the Galapagos' Diverse Wildlife

Exploring blue-footed boobies on the Galapagos Islands and swimming near playful sea lions and giant tortoises in the surrounding ocean is the equivalent of putting yourself inside the latest edition of Planet Earth . That is exactly why so many travelers are choosing to spend days on a boat exploring these spectacular islands located off the coast of Ecuador. The award-winning Ecoventura ,  International Expeditions , and  Geographic Expeditions  offer departures throughout the year, with some family-friendly options for those who want to bring the kids.

Go Shark Diving

TripSavvy / Jess Macdonald

One of the most thrilling, heart-pounding, and visceral wildlife encounters takes place when divers come face-to-face with a great white sharks, tiger sharks, or other massive sea creatures. While it is true that these fearsome predators can be dangerous and intimidating at times, adventurous travelers can observe them safely from within a reinforced shark cage. The result is the opportunity to observe these legendary animals as they roam the open ocean.

Shark Diver offers a variety of intimate encounters with sea life, taking clients on a cage dive to view great white sharks off Isla Guadalupe or into its deep dive-submarine to catch a glimpse  of giant squid in Roatan.

The Classic African Safari

When it comes to spotting animals in the wild, few experiences can compare with the classic African safari. Travelers can visit the Serengeti to watch a million wildebeest roam across the endless grasslands of Tanzania and Kenya  or the explore Kruger National Par k in South Africa for a different kind of safari experience. In both cases, you'll have the opportunity to see lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants, rhinos and perhaps even cheetahs. Overnights can be in simple camping locations or luxury lodges or tents, depending on how much you want to spend. Some of the companies offering these tours include International Expeditions , Natural Habitat Adventures , and Abercrombie & Kent .

Spot Polar Bears in the Arctic

Everyone knows that Churchill in Manitoba, Canada is considers itself the "polar bear capital of the world," but there are other places where these creatures can be found in the wild. For instance, Norway's Svalbard region offers opportunities to see polar bears on the prowl in their natural habitat too. The remote and rugged Svalbard is an island that sits above the Arctic Circle and is said that the bears outnumber the people there. Adventurous travelers can find out of that is true by joining a tour hosted by Oceanwide Expeditions , which has been taking visitors into the wild for decades.

Visit the Serengeti of North America

Yellowstone National Park is home to so much wildlife that it has been called the " Serengeti of North America ." Visitors to the world's first national park are likely to spot bison, elk, black and grizzly bears, wolves, moose, and an array of other creatures. The park offers stunning landscapes that serve as amazing backdrops to all of the wildlife viewing opportunities, which are available all year round, but are particularly epic during the winter. As with most U.S. national parks, Yellowstone is very easy to explore independently, just be sure to include the Lamar Valley on your "must-see" destinations. Alternatively however, there are a number of companies that offer great Yellowstone Tours, such as Austin Adventures based out of Billings, Montana .

Dive the Great Barrier Reef

Australia's Great Barrier Ree f is one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, and quite a destination for anyone who loves spotting sea creatures. The GBR is made up of 3000 individual reef systems and 900 islands, spread out across 1500 sq miles of area. It also happens to be home to more than 30 species of whales, dolphins, and other purposes, along with 1500 species of fish, and 17 species of sea snakes, and literally dozens of other creatures too. The reef is one of the absolute best spots in the world to go diving and snorkeling, with an abundance of guide companies offering live-aboard trips to explore its depths. Some of the best are found in Cairns , where you'll find operators that will take you out for a day or for a week.

Bird Watching in the Amazon

The Amazon Jungle is home to more than 1500 different bird species, making it a fantastic destination for those who enjoy spotting avian wildlife. The birds of the Amazon are bright, colorful, large, and playful, making them fun to spot. Peru is one of the best places to experience these amazing creatures and G Adventures offers some of the best options for those looking to take a boat up the river. Along the way, you might even spot some other types of animals, including river dolphins that like to swim alongside the boat.

Take an Orangutan Tour in Indonesia

Orangutans are some of the most fascinating primates on the planet, but it isn't always easy to find ways to see them in the wild. Fortunately,  Adventure Indonesia puts together regular trips into the jungle, which includes some unique opportunities to see these creatures in their natural home. The trip includes a boat excursion down the Lamandau River where travelers will learn more about orangutans and visit Camp Leakey where older orangutans are reintroduced back into the rain forest. They'll also get the chance to visit a Dyak Tribe villages too, providing a cultural context to the adventure as well.

Watch Grizzly Bears in Their Natural Habitat

Wildlife viewing, with twice-a-day opportunities to spot grizzly bears in their natural habitat, is the focus for guests at the floating Great Bear Lodge , May through October, guests are shuttled in by a floatplane to the lodge, which is located about 50 air miles from Port Hardy, British Columbia, Canada. One- to seven-day visits can be booked, depending on how long you wish to stay, and while grizzly bears might be the main attraction, there are also plenty of black bears, moose, bald eagles, seals, wolves, and other creatures in the area too.

Go on a Whale Watching Tour

Spotting whales on the open ocean is one of the most awe-inspiring travel opportunities imaginable. These massive creatures are simply wonderful to behold and can be found in numerous parts of the world, including Northern Europe, Australia, Alaska, and dozens of other locations. One of the best places to encounter whales is along the Baja Coast of California and Mexico. This region serves as the nursing ground for several different species, making them easy to spot at various times throughout the year. Natural Habitat Adventures offers a variety of whale watching excursions, including chances to see Pacific gray whales up close and personal.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

One of the most rewarding animal encounter experiences that any adventure traveler can have is a gorilla trek in Uganda . These journeys take visitors into the heart of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where they'll have the chance to observe and interact with mountain gorillas in their own natural habitat. These creatures are as curious about humans as we are about them, often wandering within a few feet in order to get a better view. Tourism dollars are used to help protect these creatures and gorilla treks have become one of the best conservation programs in the world. There are a number of companies that offer these excursions, but Mountain Travel Sobek has some of the best, offering options in Rwanda too.

Visit a Penguin Colony in Antarctica

Penguins have always been popular amongst adventure travelers, and while there are places you can encounter them that aren't in the Antarctic, why would you want to go anywhere else? Some of the largest Emperor penguin colonies are found on the frozen continent itself, with numbers stretching into the hundreds of thousand. Seeing these creatures in their natural habitat is an experience unlike any other as their colonies stretch as far as the eye can see. Lindblad Expeditions offers excellent trips to Antarctica and South Georgia Island, another great place to spot penguins in the wild.

Join a Tiger Safari in India

Tigers are amongst the w orld's most endangered animals so spotting them in the wild can be a challenge. Fortunately, these majestic creatures are protected in India , where much of the remaining tiger population lives, and part of the conversation process involves adventure travelers going on photo safaris to locate these big cats in their natural habitat. Natural World Safaris operates some of the best tiger excursions in the country, with options to no only interact with the wildlife but also immerse visitors in the local culture too. That isn't always a priority on other safaris, but here it is a top draw.

See Rhinos in Nepal

When most adventure travelers think about Nepal the first thing that comes to mind is the amazing trekking and climbing that takes place there. But what they don't realize is that the Himalayan country is also a great place to spot wildlife, particularly in the Chitwan National Park . This lowland area far from the mountains is home to a stable population of rhinos, making it a great spot to see these creatures in the wild. The rhinos there are a different species than those found in Africa, but are no less impressive to witness in person. Nepal Safari offers a two-day, one-night rhino excursion that makes a great add-on before or after you trek to Everest Base Camp.

Run with the Wolves in Belarus

Humans have always been drawn to wolves and that fascination continues even today. One of the best places to encounter these mesmerizing creatures is in the Nalibooki Forest of Belarus. The creatures roam free in this untamed wilderness, where you may also get the chance to spot bison, lynx, beaver, and elk too. Explore! offers some fantastic opportunities  to go in search of these animals, while also experiencing the Belarusian culture and history too.

The colours of this countryside dazzle: pindan soil spiked with silvery eucalypts, horizon-bending blue skies, the glitter of parched salt lakes. It’s a landscape as harsh as it is beautiful. Look out for Giant ripper lizards and dinosaurs at Wadlata Outback Centre.

Queensland Spirit: Heart of the Outback (seven days)

Things are bigger in the Queensland outback, from the colours to the working stations, the dinosaurs and the country characters. The latter come with plenty of swagger, and just as many stories about life on the land. This itinerary takes a deep dive into Australian history, from the Qantas Founders Museum to Winton, where Banjo Patterson penned ‘Waltzing Matilda’. You’ll follow in the footsteps of dinosaurs and watch the Queensland countryside change on the Spirit of the Outback.

4. Meander with moose in Alaska

Anchorage might be Alaska’s largest city , but it has a small-town vibe. One you can enjoy with a wonderment of wildlife in your company. The city is home to 1,500 moose, which means you can be snapping photos of one of these antlered animals within minutes of arriving in town.

Alaska is the only place in the United States with black, brown and polar bears. At nearby Chugach State Park, you’ll be able to glimpse the former two, while Alaska Zoo guarantees a spotting of the latter.

Or soar in a seaplane over Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, inaccessible by road. You’ll glide over forest-clad volcanic mountains and watch as bears forage for salmon in gem-like turquoise lakes.

Eagles and ravens also call Anchorage home, while puffins can be spotted in Kenai Fjords National Park out of Seward, which hosts two types during the season: the tufted and horned, best spotted by boat. During the summer months, you can also spot humpback, minke and killer whales. Not to mention sea lions, seals and sea otters year-round.

Come back in winter to chase the aurora borealis. Many of the prime viewing locations are easily accessed from the city, and there are plenty of Anchorage guides with an eye for those magical Northern Lights.

About Wild Frontiers

Wild Frontiers is an award-winning adventure travel company, founded in 1998 by travel writer Jonny Bealby. We specialise in stylish and original small group tours and tailor-made holidays worldwide.

We are firm believers that travelling is all about the experience and it’s in the details – the places you stay, the transport and route that gets you there, and the people you meet along the way – that make the trip; we therefore specialise in drawing on our own extensive local knowledge and array of contacts to give our clients the very best experience possible.

Our Purpose

To challenge perceptions and inspire connections.

At Wild Frontiers, we believe sustainable and immersive travel can be a powerful force for good; breaking down barriers, dispelling myths and bringing people from different cultures and communities together. Through expertise and first-hand knowledge of our destinations, we aim to create thoughtful and carefully crafted itineraries, which will leave a long-lasting positive impact on both our clients and the people and places we are privileged to visit.

adventure wild travel

Wild Frontiers has always been a company that's not afraid to go beyond the headlines and travel where, in some cases, others do not tread. We have actively helped to bring sustainable tourism back to some of the most beautiful, fascinating and sometimes troubled or misunderstood regions of the world, turning many outside assumptions into surprising reality. In fact, ‘I was surprised’ is a remark we often hear – whether that’s by the amazing landscapes and architecture, by the quality of hotels and cuisine, or above all, by the hospitality of the people and seeing that much of what they watch or hear in the news simply doesn’t play out on the streets. ‘Some of the countries we offer do raise an eyebrow, but those that join us are always ‘surprised’ by the destination and staggered by the hospitality and generosity of the people’. - Clem, Senior Travel Consultant

In 1996 travel writer Jonny Bealby set out across India and the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan's Northwest Frontier Province to follow in the footsteps of his two heroes from English literature, Peachy Carnehan and Daniel Dravot, from Kipling's classic tale, The Man Who Would Be King.

Travelling on foot, on an often gruelling and dangerous journey, he became captivated by a land of harsh natural beauty, political intrigues and a diverse and fascinating population.

And when he finally emerged from Afghanistan back into Pakistan and the valleys of the Kalash – the last of the pagan tribes to inhabit the Hindu Kush – he was so taken with these warm and welcoming people that he put down his bags and stayed for three months.

What also amazed Jonny was the near total lack of tourism to what was a relatively accessible region. So, having written his second book, For A Pagan Song , in India, about this journey, the following year he returned to Northern Pakistan and swapped his travel-writing hat for that of a tour operator.

Seeking advice from the Kalash themselves, as well as other ethnic groups along his chosen route, Jonny created the first of his itineraries ( The Hindu Kush Adventure ) and in 1998 led his first group... and so Wild Frontiers was born.

Our Tour Leaders

Why wild frontiers, personal service & expertise.

Our office is manned by experienced tour leaders and travel consultants and every trip we run stems from their first-hand knowledge. In short, we run the kind of holidays that we, as passionate travellers, like to do ourselves. When you ring our office, you will be guaranteed to chat to someone who knows the region and the terrain and is able to offer sound and practical advice.

When creating bespoke, tailor-made itineraries our specialist travel consultants will take you though each step of the process, advising you on everything from the most interesting accommodation to advice on tipping.

SMALL GROUP TOUR SIZES

On our escorted tours, we believe it is imperative to keep the group sizes small. While our average group size is 9 and most of our trips have a maximum group size of 12. Thus giving you more access to fragile cultures, better opportunities to interact with local people and the knowledge you are making less of an impact whilst there. Please refer to individual itineraries for details.

BE THE FIRST

Our style of travel is all about exploration and nothing excites us more than opening up new routes to genuine travellers. We keep abreast of new destinations and are often the first to return to places that have vanished from the tourist map.

We were the first back into Pakistan after 9/11, the first to return to Kashmir after a decade of tourist isolation, and amongst the first to run a commercial travel trip to Afghanistan for almost 30 years.

Since then we have helped bring Iran, Colombia and Georgia back into the tourist fold, specialising in groundbreaking reconnaissance trips and imaginative expeditions.

OUR PRICING

We believe in an honest, upfront pricing structure so you know exactly what the tour will cost before you book. On our group tours we avoid local payments, ‘optional extras’ or forcing our clients to go through the annoying procedure of splitting every meal bill.

Our tours are provided on a predominantly full board basis, with government permits, entrance fees and transport all included.

Our Reviews

Responsible travel.

For us Responsible Travel coincides with Responsible Business, designing adventures with the local people, culture and eco-system in mind. We are very aware of the economic, ecological and ethical impact tourism can have on ancient cultures and fragile environments.

We realise that taking clients through these regions can have a detrimental impact if not handled responsibly and as such, on all of our tours we go to great lengths to minimise the negative and accentuate the positive – after all, there are also many good things that the traveller can bring!

28 Adventures to Travel For, From Glacier Chasing in Greenland to Sand Surfing in the Sahara

By Caitlin Morton

Adventure travel Cappadocia

Below, we’ve rounded up some of the most incredible outdoor adventures for intrepid travelers, ranging from climbing Machu Picchu to skydiving in Dubai . Even if you don’t consider yourself a daredevil, you’ll still find activities that feel exciting (hello, camping under the northern lights) without too much physical—or emotional—exertion required. So fasten your seatbelts, grab your best pair of hiking boots , and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime.

Iguazu Falls Iguazu National Park

Boat under the Iguazú Falls

South America’s Iguazú Falls, located on the border of Brazil and Argentina, make all other waterfalls look like mere trickles in comparison. The system of more than 200 cascades (reaching heights of around 270 feet) can be viewed from surrounding walkways and catwalks, but we’re fans of the more adventurous vantage-point—hopping on an Iguazú Jungle inflatable raft and sailing directly under the exhilarating, high-pressure falls.

Machu Picchu

Climb to Machu Picchu

No adventurer’s must-visit list is complete without Machu Picchu , the famous Incan citadel located in the Andes. While the site can be accessed via train and bus, more active travelers can take the five-day trek along the entire 26-mile-long Inca Trail. Or, thanks to local tour operator Sam Travel Peru , you can get dropped at kilometer marker 104 and do the whole experience in 24 hours .

Sahara

Sand surf in the Sahara

The dunes of the Sahara are colossal, untouched, and tailor-made for extreme sports. The desert’s rows of barchans (meaning “crescent-shaped dunes” in Turkic) have ideal shapes for sand surfing (descending the slopes on a surfboard) and sandboarding (descending the slopes on a snowboard)—and those views don’t hurt, either. Stay at Erg Chigaga Luxury Camp in Morocco, which offers sandboarding in addition to other desert activities like camel rides and quad biking.

Landscape of Rocky Mountains

Heli-hike in British Columbia

With CMH Heli + Skiing , you can helicopter to the steepest and deepest powder in Canada for backcountry skiing. However, come summer , the company’s guides take guests on multi-day hiking trips to terrain otherwise inaccessible, along ridgelines, through alpine meadows, and to stunning viewpoints. While these high-altitude adventures are not for the faint at heart, the accommodations are quite comfortable, with log-hewn lodges complete with full-service restaurants, spa treatments, and a rooftop hot tub to relax in before another day on the trail.

Cappadocia

Hot air balloon over Cappadocia

A hot air balloon ride over central Turkey’s Cappadocia region provides 360-degree views of the famous limestone spires and “fairy chimneys”—something you can't get at the ground level. We recommend booking with Kapadokya Balloons , the first company that introduced hot air balloon tourism in Cappadocia. Services include transfers to and from your hotel, snacks, full insurance, and a champagne party after the flight.

Greenland

Hunt for glaciers in Greenland

Greenland is relatively expensive and tricky to get to, but well worth the effort—especially since it’s one of the most untouched landscapes on the planet. Exhibit A: the hundreds-year-old icebergs and glaciers floating off the mainland, which you can get up close and personal with during a cruise excursion. ( Hurtigruten and Cruise Norway offer these sailings.)

Okavango Delta Botswana

Hop across Botswana on a mobile safari

While most safari camps stay in one place like a traditional hotel, the private canvas safaris by  Barclay Stenner Safaris are totally mobile, meaning you can pick up and move locations based on weather conditions and wildlife movements. The outfitter’s Botswana itinerary moves across the country to fauna-rich areas like the Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi Salt Pans—get ready to follow groups of lions, hippos, elephants, and more.

Oludeniz

Paraglide over Turkey’s Blue Lagoon

Oludeniz has one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey, with pebble shores and a “blue lagoon” of aquamarine hues. The beach also happens to be one of the world's best places to paraglide, thanks to stable weather and gorgeous panoramic views. The launch site for most companies is from Babadağ mountain, with jumping-off points reaching 6,000 feet above sea level.

Great Barrier Reef

Explore the Great Barrier Reef

Divers and snorkelers everywhere need to experience the Great Barrier Reef at least once in their lifetime. Not only does the site have more than 400 different types of coral and 1,500 species of fish, but the natural wonder has been rapidly eroding due to coral bleaching and global warming . That means it’s more urgent than ever to see this sight in all its glory—and to understand what we are losing.

Mexico cenote

Swim through Mexico’s cenotes

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula features a wealth of unique natural beauty, particularly when it comes to its cavernous cenotes. Floating in one of these natural sinkholes is an incredible experience, as is diving through the underground cave systems . When in Tulum , visit Dos Ojos (“Two Eyes”) to view one of the planet’s most beautiful underwater sites or Gran Cenote for rock formations that resemble Gothic architecture.

Dubai skydiving

Free-fall over Dubai at 120 miles per hour

Dubai is one of the most over-the-top cities in the world, so are you really surprised that skydiving is one of its most popular activities?  Skydive Dubai is a company located near Jumeirah Beach, offering tandem skydiving for beginners and solo jumps for licensed divers. If you thought Dubai’s skyline was impressive already, just wait until you see it while falling from 13,000 feet in the air.

Yosemite Half Dome

Scale Half Dome at Yosemite National Park

The Half Dome trail through Yosemite may be one of the most intense hikes you’ll ever take, stretching for 16 miles and ascending more than 5,500 feet. The final 400 feet are the trickiest—hikers must climb up the steep slope with two steel cables as their only support—but the breathtaking views from the top make the effort (and terror) worth it. Afterwards, stay at The Ahwahnee, one of the most beautiful national park hotels in the country.

Great white shark cage diving

Swim with great white sharks in South Africa

The fishing town of Gansbaai is often considered to be the birthplace of great white shark cage diving, an activity that would make most adrenaline junkies drool. Cage diving is totally safe (despite what some low-budget shark movies might lead you to believe), but we dare you to keep your heart rate in check as you come face-to-face with an apex predator.  Marine Dynamics is one of the most popular cage diving operators in town, with a marine biologist and videographer joining every tour.

New Zealand practically invented adventure sports when the Kawarau Bridge Bungy opened in 1988. Here you join around 38,000 annual visitors to take the 140-foot jump from the South Island's historic, steel-framed Kawarau Bridge—an activity in which the views are almost as thrilling as the fall itself.

Mt Fuji

Climb Mount Fuji

Solitary Mount Fuji is probably Japan’s most iconic natural wonder , rising 12,388 feet above villages and reflecting on lakes’ surfaces. You can get views of the landmark from many places, like Lake Kawaguchi in Fujikawaguchiko and even the Park Hyatt Tokyo , but it’s the views from the mountain that will give you the most bragging rights. Visit from early July to mid-September to take advantage of the official climbing season, when the designated trails and paved roads are free of snow.

Volcano Boarding Cerro Negro

Go volcano boarding on Cerro Negro in Nicaragua

If you’re looking for action sports and adventure, we recommend booking a flight to Nicaragua right now. There you can kayak, surf, zipline through the jungle, and even sled down the side of an active volcano. Intrepid travelers love to climb up the 2,388-foot Cerro Negro and then “volcano board” back down (an activity where you sit or stand on a piece of plywood and slide your way down the slopes). You'll want to go with a guided group tour with this one. Bigfoot Hostels is one of many operators for excursions—for $25, you get transportation to the volcano, boards, safety equipment, snacks, and your speed clocked by a radar gun.

Trollstigen Norwau

Take a white-knuckle drive in Norway

Who says your adrenaline can’t pump from the comfort of your car? Trollstigen is one of the world’s most popular (and  terrifying ) highways, known for its steep gradient and hairpin turns. The one-lane road passes such impressive wonders as the 1,050-foot Stigfossen waterfall, but be sure to pull over before you gawk and snap photos. There are several viewing platforms along the road that will let you take in the sites without risking a crash.

Belize

Dive Belize’s Great Blue Hole

Known for its circular shape and strikingly deep blue color , the Great Blue Hole is a 1,000-foot-wide sinkhole in the middle of Belize’s Lighthouse Reef. While an aerial shot is enough to convince anyone of its beauty, scuba divers are the ones who get to experience the wonders that lie beneath: massive, 40-foot limestone stalactites and stalagmites that formed during the last glacial period.

The Azores Portugal

Go canyoning in the Azores

Portugal’s Azores Islands are equal parts adventurous and beautiful, inviting travelers to get up close and personal with nature while hiking, biking, and swimming. If you want to really push the envelope, try canyoning—an activity that has you rappel down a waterfall while navigating slippery rocks and fast-flowing water. Azores Getaways offers a comprehensive and easy-to-book experience. Training, equipment, on-site instructors, and snacks are all included in the excursion, which will no doubt become one of the most memorable of your life.

Patagonia kayaking

Kayak through Torres del Paine National Park

Chile’s Patagonia region is one of the most beautiful spots on the planet, and there are plenty of ways to explore the area. But while most people experience the sights while hiking, you can get a slightly different view from the water via a kayaking trip.  Kayak en Patagonia offers several tour options ranging in duration and difficulty levels, but all let you paddle past towering mountains, rugged glaciers, and other incredible vistas.

Northern Lights

Sleep under the northern lights

Ah, the elusive northern lights . So many factors are at play when it comes to seeing the technicolor phenomenon—location, time of year, weather conditions—but it’s hard to lose with an excursion to Finnish Lapland. The Arctic area is one of the planet’s best for aurora viewing, especially if you get to sleep in an igloo hotel at Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort or mobile Aurora Bubble Sled . Up your viewing chances by planning a trip between December and March.

Heliskiing

Go heli-skiing in Alaska

If you’re a seasoned traveler who’s conquered every black diamond slope in North America, there’s still one snowy adventure left to vanquish: heli-skiing. There’s nothing quite like hopping in a helicopter and being dropped onto untouched snow at the top of a mountain—especially in a setting as formidable as Alaska’s Chugach Mountains. The experienced guides at  Valdez Heli Ski Guides (VHSG) will help make this dream a reality, taking you to some of the best runs of your life and then letting you unwind (hot tub and massages included) at the cozy  Tsaina Lodge .

Snorkel between continents in Iceland

Iceland is one of the best countries in the world for adventure travel , with opportunities for everything from glacier hiking to snorkeling and diving. For the latter, head straight to Thingvellir National Park along the country’s Golden Circle route , where two tectonic plates slowly pull apart at the rate of about two centimeters (0.8 inches) per year. The phenomenon results in the Silfra fissure, a stunning rift valley where travelers can snorkel or dive in impossibly clear (and cold) waters. Tour company DIVE.IS offers tours for divers and every level of snorkeler—including those with no prior experience—and will snap an underwater photo of you touching two continents at the same time.

Float along the Amazon

Some remote destinations are best seen from the deck of a boat, and that includes the upper Amazon River. Aqua Expeditions ’ luxury cruises through the Peruvian stretch of the river tour the area’s wildlife and culture at a delightful, leisurely pace. You'll even have chef-prepared gourmet meals and five-star suites with floor-to-ceiling windows. Looking for something a little less luxe? Amazon Adventures offers kayaking trips along some Amazon tributaries, where you can fish for piranhas and camp out in the rainforest.

The Pipeline Oahu

Surf ‘The Pipeline’ in Oahu

Oahu’s Banzai Pipeline (commonly referred to as The Pipeline) is easily one of the most sought-after surfing spots in the world. Located off the coast of the island’s north shore in Ehukai Beach Park, the surf reef break averages waves measuring nine feet high. This activity is definitely not for beginners, but even non-surfers will get a thrill out of watching the many surf competitions that take place at The Pipeline—all from the safety of a sunny beach.

Great Bear Rainforest Canada

Spot elusive wildlife in the Great Bear Rainforest

Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest is the largest intact temperate rainforest in the world—and one of the most magical, with elusive species like sea wolves and Kermode bears roaming its 21 million acres. Outer Shores Expeditions will take you on a nine-day excursion aboard a schooner, departing from British Columbia’s First Nations community of Bella Bella and stopping for sea kayaking along the way.

Victoria Falls

Soak in the planet’s most extreme infinity pool

Located on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls attracts thousands of tourists each year. One of the biggest draws here is the Devil’s Pool , a naturally formed eddy sitting at the very edge of the falls, where daring swimmers can splash around between August and January (depending on water levels, that is). Given that a slippery rock barrier is the only thing separating you from going over the edge, this site is easily the planet’s most extreme infinity pool .

Camp in Antarctica

Antarctica is truly the final frontier when it comes to adventure travel, providing untouched landscapes, unique wildlife, and more activities than you’ll know what to do with (like cruising, caving, and thermal spring soaking , to name a few). If you can get yourself to Punta Arenas, Chile, Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions will fly you to Antarctica for three days of skiing and hiking before setting you up for a South Pole sleepover.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

adventure wild travel

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

adventure wild travel

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

adventure wild travel

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

adventure wild travel

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

adventure wild travel

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

adventure wild travel

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

adventure wild travel

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

Musée D'Orsay in Paris

musee d'orsay

The Musée D'Orsay , once a railway station, houses an internationally renowned collection of Impressionist art and other Western pieces from 1848 and 1914. Architect Victor Laloux built the original magnificent structure in 1900 to welcome visitors to the World’s Fair. After its closure in 1939, the Beaux-Arts station remained in a state of disuse until President Valery Giscard authorized renovations on the historic building in the late 1970s.

Inaugurated in 1986, the white limestone walls are now home to some of the most notable artworks in France, paintings by Paul Gauguin and Edouard Manet.

Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid

Since its inception in 1990, the Museo Reina Sofia has always been viewed as a cultural center where art retells the history of Spain and gives insight into its future. The 20,000-piece collection focuses primarily on Spanish artists from the 20th century, but you'll find a number of groundbreaking pieces from international artists like Vasily Kandinsky and Sarah Grilo.

The star of the museum is Pablo Picasso's Guernica, a powerful oil painting depicting the horrors of the Spanish Civil War. Reina Sofia's other signature exhibition of includes the works of Salvador Dalí.

The Musée du Louvre in Paris

lourve

The Musée du Louvre has way more to offer than just Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lis a . King Philip II ordered the construction of a fortress in 1190 to protect Paris. The National Assembly opened the Louvre as a museum in 1793, starting its legacy as the world’s largest art museum. The Winged Victory of Samothrace and Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss are just a few of the nearly 380,000 works of art within the Louvre.

Since its opening in 2008, the Apartheid Museum has been regarded as one of the most informative museums in South African history. The institution's 21 exhibition halls document the rise and fall of apartheid within the country through film footage, photographs, and artifacts.

Upon arrival, guests are greeted by seven columns detailing the Pillars of the Constitution in the main courtyard. The most striking exhibit details the life and wisdom of Nelson Mandela, the famous revolutionary who served as South Africa's first president after the end of segregation.

Founded in 1947 by Brazilian businessman Assis Chateaubriand, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) was the first modern museum in all of Brazil. Originally located on Rua 7 de Abril, the museum's current glass structure on Avenida Paulista was designed by Lina Bo Bardi in 1968. The award-winning building's airy appearance is mirrored throughout the exhibition halls as works on crystal easels feel as though they are floating. Its holdings consist of nearly 11,000 artworks and objects collected from all across the world, including the most important collection of European art in the southern hemisphere.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark

Knud W. Jensen's vision was clear: he wanted to create a museum where Danish people could see modern art from their peers. Though in the years that followed its 1945 founding, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art quickly turned into the predominant institution of international modernist art and architecture.

The 4,000-piece collection encompasses works from 1945 to today from an array of styles including eclectic European Nouveau, global Realism, and American Art Pop. The institution's main principle is not to simply put things out for show, but educate the masses about each work and its impact on society.

National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

thr national museum of african american history and culture

The only national museum devoted to the documentation of the African American experience, this Smithsonian institution was inaugurated in 2016. However, the idea of the museum was first proposed more than a hundred years before in 1915 by Black veterans of the Civil War. The initial proposal called for a monument to be erected in the honor of Black soldiers and sailors in the nation’s capital, but debates over funding and site locations kept pushing the project back. It wasn't until 2003 when an Act of Congress established the institution and construction plans began. Today, the National Museum of African American History and Culture houses more than 40,000 objects dedicated to African American life, history, and culture.

Museum of Black Civilizations in Dakar, Senegal

museum of black civilizations senegal

Inaugurated in 2018, the Museum of Black Civilizations acts as a creative hub for Senegal—and the entire African continent—to celebrate their culture while detailing the struggle that Africans faced throughout history. The museum was the vision of the country’s first president Léopold Sédar Senghor, who vowed to build an institution honoring African art and identity. While Senghor unfortunately passed before the museum opened, his legacy lives on in the curated art selections and striking displays filling the galleries.

The opening of the cultural landmark also spurred a debate amongst the art world, with many scholars calling for museums throughout Europe to return thousands of artifacts looted from Africa during the colonial period.

National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa

Canadian Landscapes

When the National Gallery of Canada was established in 1880, the first exhibition primarily consisted of 19th-century works at the historic Clarendon Hotel in Ottawa. Over 140 years later, a 30-foot bronze spider called the Maman greets visitors at the gallery’s new home designed by architect Moshe Safdie.

The national art museum now houses 75,000 works of art ranging from Canadian and Indigenous pieces to the neoclassicist painting The Death of General Wolfe by Benjamin West.

Museum of the Royal Tombs of Sipán in Chiclayo, Peru

museum of the royal tombs of sipán

In 1987, Peruvian archaeologist Walter Alva was called upon by police to investigate the Moche archaeological site at Sipán, where grave robbers had been looting artifacts. When he began excavating the site, Alva soon found he was not unearthing a few pieces of jewelry and gold, but rather, the tombs of the Lord of Sipán and 14 other members of the Moche civilization.

The Museum of the Royal Tombs of Sipán was built to honor and display what has been considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries in South America. Guests can ogle lavish jewels, regal vessels, and other stunning artifacts of Peru’s ancient community.

The National Art Center prides itself in being an “empty museum,” constantly ushering new exhibitions and collections spread across it’s concrete-and-glass structure designed by Kisho Kurokawa.

Established in 2007, the quirky museum quickly grew in popularity and became a must-see attraction in Tokyo, boasting roughly 2 million visitors each year. Past exhibitions cover a wide range of topics from the Impressionist works of Claude Monet and the impact of anime on Japanese culture to the history of Cartier.

The birth of Tate Modern began in 1889 when Henry Tate, a British industrialist, donated his collection of British 19th-century art and provided funding for the first Tate Gallery. A century later, the Tate Trustees announced the development of an international modern and contemporary art gallery.

Located within the former Bankside Power Station, the gallery showcases groundbreaking works including Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol and Nude Woman with Necklace by Pablo Picasso.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City

the met

The beginnings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art date back as far as 1866 in Paris, France, where a group of Americans discussed the need to bring art education to the public. On April 13, 1870, the Met opened within the historic Dodworth Building before moving to its permanent location on Fifth Avenue and 82nd Street in 1880.

The museum presents over 5,000 years of artwork, including Islamic art dating back to the seventh century and the well-known Edgar Degas’ painting The Dance Class .

Bangkok National Museum

bangkok national museum

The first national museum in Thailand, this Bangkok cultural splendor houses the country’s most extensive collection of Thai artifacts and artwork. The museum’s structures can be traced back to 1782, when they served as the palace of Rama I's viceroy, Prince Wang Na.

Nearly 100 years later, the grounds were transformed into a museum with three differently themed galleries: a Thai History Gallery, an Archaeological and Art History collection, and a Decorative Arts and Ethnological Collection. In addition to the main collections, guests can discover one of the most revered images of Buddha, Phra Phuttha Sihing, in the Bhuddhaisawan Chapel.

See the World’s Deepest Hotel—Where Getting There Is Half the Adventure

H ard hats, flashlights, and hiking boots aren’t the type of toiletries one is used to receiving at their overnight accommodations, but visiting the world’s deepest hotel isn’t your usual retreat. Known as the Deep Sleep, the property is located in Snowdonia, Wales, at the base of an abandoned slate mine, reports CBS . The vacation experience is among the most evident tangible examples of the old maxim, the journey is more important than the destination.

When guests arrive, they’re given all the equipment necessary to travel to their cabins, which are roughly 1,400-feet underground . The trip is operated by the mine exploration company Go Below Underground Adventure . A guide leads them through the massive pit, which goes for miles in a series of maze-like tunnels created by miners over 200 years. To get to the bottom, visitors climb through caverns, journey through tunnels, and even zip line at times. The whole descent takes about an hour, according to the company .

However, once they arrive at the base, guests are greeted with a surprisingly cozy setup. The actual hotel—or camp, as it’s called—consist of series of log cabins and one grotto room, which is built into the cavern walls. Though the mine is about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the cabins are thermally lined with thick insulation, so they remain fairly warm. Batteries, which are charged by micro-hydro turbines from the water within the mine, power electric lighting and even Wi-Fi. Taps offer running water from a spring in the mine. Groups are served an expedition-style dinner before retiring to their rooms for the deepest sleep of their lives.

Trips to the unique stay happen once a week on Saturday evenings through Sunday mornings. The cost to stay at the world’s deepest hotel is relatively low and priced by the cabin. The standard ones cost about $475 each and can sleep two people, while the grotto is available for about $730 and can also accommodate two people.

How to Fly Your Kid Solo, Free of Stress

An illustration of children flying solo on the airplane.

By Alexander Nazaryan

For many parents and guardians, putting a child on a flight alone may seem terrifying. Belligerent passengers, delays, turbulence: All loom large in a caregiver’s imagination.

Life sometimes leaves no other option. Hudson Crites , 17, of Marshall, Va., was 10 when he started flying unaccompanied to visit his father in Kansas and later Georgia, said his mother, Chelsea Tippett. But the extra attention from airline staff made Hudson “feel special,” Ms. Tippett recalls. Other than a single tarmac delay, he has had no problems.

On rare occasions, children have had troubling experiences. In December, Spirit Airlines accidentally flew a 6-year-old to Orlando, Fla., instead of the intended destination of Fort Myers. Spirit apologized, fired the gate agent responsible and offered reimbursement to the boy’s grandmother for her travel to Orlando. But while the boy was unharmed, his grandmother expressed worry that he had been kidnapped .

If you decide to fly your child unaccompanied, you’ll discover that each airline has its own procedures, fees and routes open to children. While some may find the process complicated, flying alone may be exciting for your child, instilling some independence. Here’s what you need to know.

Before you book, know the process

Regardless of the airline or route, flying an unaccompanied minor differs from an adult or a family catching a flight. Airlines require a trusted pre-authorized adult to be at the departure and arrival gates, and will ask you at booking to provide contact information for those adults. They will also need to present identification at the terminals.

The journey begins at the originating airport’s airline ticket counter. There, airline staff will check your identification and check in the child, perhaps handing them a lanyard or wristband to wear. The agents will provide you with a pass to get through security with your child. You will accompany them to the gate, where you will hand them off to a gate agent. You must stay at the gate until the plane takes off.

In the air, the flight crew will keep watch — but will not babysit, or sit with, your child. If the flight has a connection, a crew member will walk your child off the plane and a gate agent will take him or her to the next gate.

At the arrival airport, the child will be handed off by staff to the authorized guardian or parent who should have already checked in at the ticket counter with proper identification, gone through security with their gate pass and be waiting at the gate.

To learn more about this process, read the Department of Transportation’s online guide, “When Kids Fly Alone,” followed by the website of your selected carrier.

Choosing an airline and paying an extra fee

Before purchasing a ticket, experts advise you to consider an airline’s on-time performance. “Solid on-time performance is hard-earned, and signals a carrier that has tight control of its operation,” said the Ask the Pilot author, Patrick Smith. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics has those numbers.

Booking procedures vary. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines require you to call. United Airlines allows bookings online. JetBlue Airways does online bookings, too, but asks for three printed copies of its forms upon arrival at the airport.

International flights may call for a notarized consent letter describing where the child is traveling, with whom they’ll stay and how long they’ll be there.

On top of the ticket fare, flying an unaccompanied minor can be pricey.

Southwest Airlines charges $100 one way for each child, regardless of distance. Alaska Airlines charges $50 per child if the flight is nonstop; a connection adds $25. On Delta, one $150 fee will cover up to four children, and American’s $150 covers all siblings, with no cap on number. United charges $150 for one child, or two children flying together.

Restrictions: There are plenty

U.S. carriers allow children to fly as unaccompanied minors once they turn 5 and before they turn 18. But regardless of your child’s age, make sure he or she is ready by discussing the trip details and your expectations of their behavior. No policy can replace your judgment.

The low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Air don’t allow unaccompanied minors, Other airlines have restrictions that, in the broadest terms, differentiate between young children and teenagers. American and Delta restrict children under 8 from routes requiring connections. Both airlines allow children between 8 and 14 to take some connecting flights.

On American, no unaccompanied minor is allowed to take an overnight flight requiring a connection, or a flight that includes a connection on its final leg that also happens to be the last such flight that day (“unless it’s the only flight,” the company adds). Minors are not allowed on code-share flights.

United and Delta have similar rules. Southwest, JetBlue and Spirit don’t allow unaccompanied minors on connecting flights.

JetBlue prohibits minors from flying to Europe, and limits the number of unaccompanied minors in one party to three. Spirit does not allow children on flights to Central or South America. Southwest doesn’t allow children on any international flights. American, United and Delta let minors fly abroad, but restrictions on connections, code-shares and overnights limit options.

American and Delta allow children to opt out of flying as unaccompanied minors once they turn 15 — that is, the child can fly without the assistance of airline personnel. JetBlue ends unaccompanied minor service at 14, while Alaska has an opt-out option at 13. Southwest boasts the lowest opt-out age: 12.

However, you should be able to accompany your child to the gate even if they’re not flying unaccompanied. American requires that you do so for teens between the ages of 15 and 17, even if they’ve opted out.

What to pack

Have a plan to head off your child’s hunger, boredom and thirst. If they are older, make sure they have emergency money and a charged phone.

When her two daughters, then 9 and 11, flew to Denver, Joey Conover of Charlottesville, Va., had a long list for their carry-ons.

“Pack a backpack with iPad, headphones, lightweight book to read, a pad of paper and colored pencils (markers might smear), a small travel game, water bottle (bring empty and fill in airport), snacks, some kind of surprise fidget or animals to play with, hoodie, and a lovey,” she wrote in an email.

“Write your name and phone number on the inside of their arm in Sharpie and put a parent’s business card in a luggage tag on both suitcase and backpack,” Ms. Conover said. (A sheet of paper with all their identification, and their guardian’s contact information, also works. Simply stick in an easy-to-access pocket.)

Seabourn has special offers throughout the year where solo cruisers can take advantage of reduced pricing equal to double occupancy fares or discounts on the single supplement starting at 25% above the double occupancy fares. These rates are available on select voyages, including expedition cruises. Frequent solo cruisers and members of the luxury line's Seabourn Club Diamond Elite will also find reduced single supplements on Diamond Elite Single Supplement Sailings. In addition, club members receive invitations to exclusive events, where they can meet and mingle with fellow cruisers. Solo passengers are also invited to sit with the ship's officers, crew and entertainers at dinner – and there are hosted get-togethers for single travelers.

Solo cruisers will enjoy beautifully designed oceanfront suites and all-inclusive amenities on board Seabourn 's intimate ships. These perks include world-class dining; complimentary premium wine and spirits; a spa and wellness program in partnership with Dr. Andrew Weil; included gratuities; and the line's enrichment series, Seabourn Conversations. Single cruisers looking for an extended holiday will enjoy longer voyages on the line's newest purpose-built expedition ship, Seabourn Pursuit.
