June heralds the start of winter, dry weather and the peak safari season across most of the destinations in Africa. Regardless of where you choose to go, you will have a great experience, with dry warm days and little to no rain across the region. Animals begin to gather around water sources making game viewing far easier. Temperatures drop in the evenings and mornings when it can be cool, so make sure to pack a warm jacket, gloves and a scarf for nights spent around the campfire and game viewing from open vehicles. All of the intimate, wonderful and remote bush camps are open in June so you will be spoilt for choice!

In South Africa, Cape Town can be the exception to the rule of a dry winter and can be cold and wet at this time of year. The weather around the Kruger National Park , however, is great with warm and dry days but chilly mornings and nights.

Our beloved Botswana is superb throughout June, and the majority of camps are still offering mid-season rates, making it a great time to visit and save a few dollars. As the land dries the game animals leaves the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans , which start to lose their appeal, and make their way towards the life-sustaining waters of the Okavango Delta. The Okavango is now in flood and looking exceptional, with phenomenal game viewing in most areas. This is the start of best time for water-based activities in the Okavango Delta. Herds of elephant and buffalo start to fill up the riverfront areas of the Chobe and Linyanti rivers.

June in Namibia is dry with very little chance of rain. The days are warm, but the nights can be cool. This is the time of year which marks the start of prime game viewing season, as wildlife is forced to remain close to permanent water sources. This creates the ‘Noah’s Ark’ scene Etosha is famous for! Namibia is generally good value for money, but with the start of peak season it is busier, and reservations are best made well in advance.

Zambia is famous for walking safaris, fantastic wildlife and remote bush camps. All of these once again become readily accessible in the dry season, opening a whole new avenue of adventure. South Luangwa National Park is well known for walking safaris in the now-dry riverbed, fly camping under the stars, big cats, and an all-around fantastic wildlife experience that is hard to beat. The Lower Zambezi National Park offers a multitude of activities that are second to none, whilst Busanga Plains in Kafue National Park is one of the best places in Africa for predator action, although its better towards the end of the dry season.

In east Africa most of the parks will be open and game viewing is exceptional. The southern Tanzania circuit is starting to dry out and in Ruaha National Park animals slowly move from the miombo highlands to the plains around the great Ruaha River. The herds in the Serengeti is now in the Grumeti Reserves and the Grumeti River crossings make for some spectacular sightings.

June is the start of the best wildlife-viewing season in Africa. It's early winter in Southern Africa - heralding pleasant dry weather and good visibility as grass whithers and leaves drop. East Africa has emerged from the long rains, meaning drier weather and ongoing moderate temperatures. Tourist numbers and lodge prices have not yet increased to peak season amounts - this is a good time to travel!

Southern Africa

Southern Africa has entered the dry season - enjoying lower temperatures and a low chance of rain. The bushveld is thinning out, and wildlife viewing is now easier. Most wildlife areas now offer good wildlife viewing, and the disappearance of ground water means that seasonal camps and lodges are all operational. Famous walking safari areas like Luangwa Valley (Zambia) and Mana Pools (Zimbabwe) are fully operational and offer excellent experiences. In Botswana's Okavango Delta, the much anticipated annual floodwaters have arrived - adding boating and mokoro outings to your safari activities of game drives and walking safaris. This is when the Okavango is at its best!

Beaches, islands and bush-and-beach combos

All of Africa's coastal areas and islands have entered the dry season, meaning pleasant to hot weather with little chance of rain. From Mozambique's Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos to Seychelles, Mauritius, Sao Tome and Principe, Lake Malawi, Lamu and the Spice Islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia - all offer excellent water sports and toes-in-the-sand relaxation. Combining any of these paradise destinations with a bushveld safari makes for a perfect combination - safari heaven!

Great Wildebeest Migration - the northerly trek continues

By June the long rains have abated somewhat, and the herds have spread out in central Serengeti, Tanzania. The front-runners reach Mbalageti River around this time and those bringing up the rear could still be as far back as Lake Magadi or in the southernmost corner of the Simiti and Nyamuma Hills. Maasai Mara secret season

June is a wonderful time in Kenya's Maasai Mara. The longs rains are over, prime season crowds have not yet arrived and resident predators continue to target young animals. This is an excellent time for private wildlife viewing before the herds and tourists arrive.

Victoria Falls

Although the peak water level season has passed, June still offers a dramatic experience as the ' the smoke that thunders ' spray towers above the falls. Courageous visitors to Livingstone Island (Zambia) can swim out to the Angel’s Armchair (June-August) to enjoy a thrilling view from the lip of the Falls. With the end of the long rains, the primate trekking season opens up again. June is the turning point across safari-Africa. Most of the rains have left and Africa begins to enter its dry, winter season. This presents a problem for travellers wanting to go to Africa as the choice almost becomes overwhelming with destinations offering superb safaris and wildlife viewing as the bush continues to become increasingly sparse and wildlife becoming more concentrated around permanent water sources.

As the summer rains fade in to the dry of winter, roads become passable once more and the whole of Madagascar is open to explore. Enjoy visiting some of the more popular parks without the crowds of August and September, as well as having the chance to drive, virtually alone, up the West Coast to visit the iconic Tsingy de Bemerehana National Park.

June has 3 main things going for it in Mozambique . The weather is usually lovely with very little rain and great day time temperatures. Also at this time it’s the start of when the whales heading up on their migration. They head from the Antarctic up the East coast of Africa to calf in the warm waters, heading up through Tofo and on upwards to the Bazaruto archipelago. Combined with the whales migrating up it’s also a great time for diving as the seas is nice and calm.

The Serengeti is the main popular attraction in Tanzania in June with the Wildebeest Migration pushing towards the western corridor regions and the wildebeest and antelope rutting in its fullest. It’s not the quietest time to experience the bush - this is one of the highest densities of plains game in the world, as males battle for dominance and breeding rights to females, this is an ongoing saga with plenty of drama… and don’t forget about the abundance of predators waiting to seize their opportunity with all the distractions and fighting disrupting the vast herds.

South Africa

As the bush begins to dry and foliage decreases, June is the beginning of winter in South Africa . With the northern regions providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, especially around the Kruger National Park and Kwa Zulu Natal areas coming into their prime at this time of year. Usually the months between June and October provide the best conditions for a safari. This is also the best time to go on longer, walking safaris as the weather has cooled, rains have dissipated, and the bush is opening up making wildlife viewing easier.

The southern Cape regions are a stark contrast to the north – this is when the Cape has most of its rains with much cooler temperatures. However, this shouldn’t put you off as this is just the start of the Cape’s whale migration season where pods of humpback and southern right whales skim the continental shelf of Africa as they make their way north from their feeding grounds in the Antarctic.

The Okavango Delta is in full flood, with the entire Delta region in exceptional condition, making June a great time to ride a mokoro (traditional canoe) through the flooded plains. A mokoro allows you to experience close encounters with large numbers of hippos, elephants and to weave your way through herds of zebra who have come down to the waters to drink. Game viewing is good around the Chobe and Linyanti regions as the herds migrate away from the Makgadikgadi Pans which have begun to dry up.

The start of the dry season in the ‘Land of a thousand hills’. Little rainfall, few visitors and dry ground all culminate for fantastic conditions to experience a mountain gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park. Apart from the magnificent gorillas, Rwanda has a true bounty of wildlife; chimpanzees, golden monkeys, a huge array of colourful birds and with the ‘big five’ Akagera National Park in east Rwanda, it makes this small yet beautiful country a fantastic all round destination.

Nairobi and the central highlands are warm by day, cool at night, and receive little rainfall. Mombasa and the coast are hot by day, relatively cool at night, and receive a fair amount of rain.

The Rift Valley and western interior are hot by day, cool at night, and receive occasional rain. Some of the rains brought in by the Kusi monsoon occur early in June. However, as the month progresses, the cooler, drier weather develops.

The climate throughout June becomes much more comfortable than in the preceding months, particularly in the highlands.

Although drier, it is likely to remain cloudy, keeping the sun and higher temperatures at bay. This can be a great time to travel with children as you don’t need to worry about humidity and constant sunscreen application.

• June is one of the wettest months on the coast and not suitable for beach holidays or underwater activities.
• Game viewing in most safari destinations in Kenya is good in June.
• First held in 2008, the annual Lake Turkana Festival, a colourful showcase for 14 traditionalist ethnic communities associated with the northern deserts, takes place in the small town of Loiyangalani, usually in June.

Outstanding and great organized trip led by professionals who also know how to spoil your tummies. 15 days full of highlights: Rhino sanctuary visit, bush camp overnight in Okavango, enjoying the traditional music and dances of the locals. The flight over the delta is absolutely spectacular and a must, spotting wildlife from the air. Chobe river sunset cruise with tons of animals around the water and a safari in the early morning spotting 13 lions eating a baby elephant for breakfast. Visited the majestic Victoria falls and we stand right next to 4 wild rhinos in Matobo NP...and I really mean standing as we were led by the rhino whisperer himself!! Plus the enormous Kruger Park in the end with offering the most spectacular storm I've seen in my life. Africa is just magical!!

Outstanding game viewing and perfect beach weather

June is the start of the winter period in the Southern Hemisphere, but don't let the word 'winter' put you off!  The game viewing is outstanding everywhere, the beach weather just perfect, and you are also just before the peak travel period which co-incides with the summer break for the majority of European and North American schools - so you can take advantage of there being less visitors everywhere you go.

Yes, the evenings do get chilly - but there is also something really special about returning from an evening game drive and enjoying a pre-dinner drink around a warming log fire as you listen to the night sounds of the African bush around you!

Daily temperatures are still pleasant, but the early mornings and nights can get very cold and you will need several warm layers for your morning and evening game drives.

With zero rainfall, the animals become more dependent on water, so the Chobe Riverfront and Okavango Delta regions are just alive with wildlife. The May to October period is generally thought to be the best time to visit the Delta as its waterways are full of water, there is abundant wildlife, and the skies overhead are clear and blue. The downside? Well, this is peak season in terms of prices so it can get a little expensive, however visitors are definitely getting the ultimate wildlife experince in one of Africa's very best safari destinatiions.

June is one of the nicest months to travel to Zambia to go on a safari in one of the country's outstanding National Parks. It is the start of the dry season, so there is zero rainfall, making the walking safaris and fly camping that Zambia is so famous for very enjoyable indeed. The sky is a brilliant blue and there are few mosquitos, which is always a bonus! 

Many of the camps have only just reopened after the rainy season. Most spend the time when the camps are closed redoing their soft refurbishments and general maintenance, so everything should be beautiful and ready for your arrival!  A lot of lodges are offering Shoulder Season rates, making June a more affordable time to be on safari.

As this is just at the start of the dry months, the vegetation is still lush and green, and there is plenty of water in the rivers which the wildlife still visit regularly to drink.

Zambia is a land-locked, warm-hearted African country with an endless list of adventures on offer. Many tourists overlook Zambia as a wildlife destination in its own right, yet the nation is packed with natural delights, making it a superb and secret spot for a safari.

June is the start of the cooler dry season in Hwangwe and Mana Pools and one of the best times for wildlife sightings in both Parks. The many waterholes in Hwangwe become a magnet for the wildlife as the surface water starts to dry out, and the vegetation dries back too, making it easier to spot wildlife. In Mana Pools, the wildlife start to congregate more around the Zambezi River as this is the only permanent water supply.  The risk of malaria is less as the mosquitoes do not like the colder weather! 

Victoria Falls

This is also one of the best times to visit the Victoria Falls from either the Zambia or the Zimbabwe side as the Zambezi River is at its annual peak flooding time.  The noise of the Falls is truly deafening, and it is impossible to see the foot of the Falls and almost any of its rockface, as the amount of water surging down is so great...it is totally mesmorising to watch. 

June is the start of the long dry and relatively cooler season. The chances of rain are highly unlikely, and the temperatures are less humid, making these months a truly lovely time to visit the country for a safari holiday.  Many lodges also run shoulder season rates in June, which helps with the cost of a safari!

The Great Migration continues is onwards march up the Serengeti Plains. A vast number of the migrating wildebeest and zebra veer off towards the west, and the first of the herd reaches the Grumeti River in the Western Corridor. Many lodges are based around this area, giving safari goers the ideal opportunity to head to a river crossing point to witness the first of the blood-thirsty river crossings, as the wildebeest negotiate not only the shallow river and slippery rocks, but also the hungry jaws of the waiting crocodiles - some of which are truly huge!

Tanzania's Northern Safari Circuit is the place of safari and beach dreams - vast plains stretching into a hazy horizon dotted with wildlife coupled with soft, white sands laced with coconut palms. Add to this the possibility of also witnessing the Great Migration crossing the Serengeti Plains depending on when you are holidaying here, and this really is Africa at its most epic.

June usually sees the end of the rainy season, and the start of the dry season.  Many camps and lodges offer a shoulder season rate, so prices are generally lower which adds to the attraction of a safari holiday to Kenya during this month.

After the safari, why not head to the Kenyan coast - migrating humpback whales arrive at the end of the month, and the temperatures are warm and accompanied by hours of sunshine.

Gorilla Trekking

June is one of the best months to trek to find the endangered mountain gorillas in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, or in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park.

Being a peak month for trekking, however, gorilla permits are a bit like golddust, so very early planning is required - normally a year (or even longer) in advance.

If you are looking to spend time in June on a beautiful white sandy beach, fringed by palm trees and the warm Indian Ocean waters - then head to one of the islands that make up Seychelles.  This is one of the most perfect times of the year to be here - either as an add on after a safari in Kenya or South Africa, or if you are just wanting to spend all your time either in one  hotel or if you fancy a bit of Seychelles island hopping. 

Clear blue skies and glorious sunshine during the day, followed by balmy tropical nights, and of course not forgetting the sparking and enticingly warm ocean waters - there is no better place to be for a perfect beach holiday.

June marks the start of the dry winter season here, but as Mauritius boasts tropical weather all year round, this still means sunshine throughout the day and warm evenings.  Humidity is lower, however, making this a very pleasant time to be on the beach or around a swimming pool.
